15 Fun Things to Do With Your Family This Summer

There's an abundance of fun, family-bonding activities to enjoy during the summer months and most require more creativity than money to organize. The most important part of summer fun for your kids is spending time with mom and dad, so do not feel like you need to take them to a glitzy theme park or fancy resort to make memories. A scenic nature walk and picnic are often much more memorable for children because they spend more time connecting with you. Here's some inspiration to get your creative juices flowing, and feel free to tweak accordingly depending on the ages of your children.

  1. Gather up pails, shovels, shapers and more and have a sandcastle-building competition at the beach or park. Finish with popsicles for everyone afterwards.
  2. Pitch a tent and camp-out in your backyard. Roast wieners on a stick, make your own s'mores over a fire pit and tell ghost stories galore.
  3. Invite the neighbourhood kids over for a water balloon fight, slip and slide on the lawn or run through the sprinkler – water fun on a hot day never gets old.
  4. Hop on your bikes and head to the nearest water park or lake to cool down.
  5. Organize a craft session or movie-thon on a rainy day.
  6. Bike down to the corner store or market for an ice cream treat.
  7. Have an old-school picnic in the park complete with blanket, dishware and cutlery, cold salads, finger sandwiches, a juicy watermelon, cookies and chilled lemonade.
  8. Take the family to an outdoor concert, show or drive-in movie (if you're lucky enough to have one nearby) and bring your own popcorn and goodies.
  9. Head to the local sports field to watch a game of baseball or soccer and cheer for your home team. Wear team colours and paint your faces accordingly.
  10. Grab your favourite flotation devices and go for a float down a local river.
  11. Go for an overnight camping trip complete with portable cook stove, food, sleeping bags and tent. Watch the sun set and wait for the stars to emerge.
  12. Visit a local farm to pick berries and feed the animals. Play your favourite music or car games on the way.
  13. Take the kids fishing off the local dock or in a nearby stream. Pack bait, sandwiches and beverages and make a day out of it.
  14. Stop in at the farmer's market and let your kids pick out their favourite, seasonal produce.
  15. Set-up your very own lemonade stand. It would not be summer without one!
