Is There Mold Coming From Your Air Conditioner?

The primary byproduct of air conditioning is moisture. Both central air and portable units are susceptible to attracting mold spores because they provide oxygen rich and moist environments that molds thrive in. Molds are a type of fungi that produce microscopic cells called spores that are easily spread through the air, especially with the help of an air conditioner.

Air conditioners can become breeding grounds for mold when dust gets deposited on the cooling fins and becomes damp as the air conditioner condenses water out of the air. This damp dust provides the setting for mold growth. An air conditioning system that is properly designed, installed and maintained should not cause mold growth. However, systems that are improperly designed or oversize may cool the air, but not remove enough moisture. Mold growth can also appear in air conditioning systems have been improperly installed, are in need of maintenance or that have water drainage problems.

Unchecked mold growth can lead to health problems. Touching mold or inhaling mold spores can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in sensitive individuals. In addition to respiratory problems and fungal infections, mold exposure can also irritate the eyes, lungs, nose, skin and throat. Those at greatest risk of adverse health effects from mold exposure are individuals with respiratory conditions, allergies, infants, small children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

Ways To Prevent Mold Growth In Air Conditioners Include:

o Make sure the condensation pan is not overflowing, causing water to collect on the floor. Make sure the drain line is clear and unblocked.
o Regularly clean air conditioning filters and allow them to dry thoroughly before before reinstallation.
o Have semi-annual maintenance checks on your HVAC system and duct work conducted by professionals.
o Install an ultraviolet (UV) light in a duct near the condensation pan.

Moisture control is the key element to keeping an air conditioning system free of mold. Any signs of water damage around the air conditioning system need to be addressed within 24-48 to prevent mold growth. Visible moisture around the base on an air handler is often evidence that the condensation hose or drain pipe is blocked and should be flushed immediately.

If you discover mold on hard surfaces, wash it thoroughly with detergent, bleach and water and dry the area completely. Remember, there is no foolproof way to eliminate indoor mold growth; the best defense is to control moisture to inhibit a mold-friendly environment.

Why You Need Good Stair Carpet

Buying carpet is a very important, and generally expensive, decision that each homeowner has to make. In making this decision, be sure to take a few things into consideration, including what quality of carpeting you are going to need and / or want in your home. Furthermore, this decision will vary according to which type of carpet you are installing-you will make a different decision for the carpeting in your living room than you would for your stairs.

Looking specifically at your stair carpeting, there is one main point you should consider before making your decision on which type of thread you are going to go with. Carpeting on stairs is much different from other areas on your home for the simple fact that you will be seeing the carpet from many different angle when it is on your stairs. You look at that carpet more often than below or at the same eye level, and this can make a difference in the carpet you choose. In addition, some carpets will look differently when bent over the stairs and show the threading behind that you probably do not want to see as a homeowner who just paid a few thousand dollars for that carpet.

Because of these two unique differences between stair and other carpet types you need to make sure you do your research and choose the best one for you. Taking home a sample stair carpet square is one of the best ways to get this education-you get to see how the carpet looks and feels upfront in your own home.

Window cleaning is important if the windows are really dirty, they block the sunlight and create unpleasing conditions. Most of us do not clean the windows each time we clean the house and just keep this job for special occasions or the change of seasons.

The market is filled with special substances that promise to make window cleaning bearable, but most consumers out there still improvise and just use warm water with a touch of ammonia or vinegar. There are some tips that you can follow to make your job easier and get it over with much faster.

Simple Guides on Making a Strong Wood Mallet

Some people like to joke that the best tool for any job is a bigger hammer. A woodworker's joinery mallet, with its massive square head, fits that description, but there's more to it than that.

A well-designed mallet is light enough to control comfortably but heavy enough to deliver useful power without requiring a wild, roundhouse swing. A mallet also offers a broader striking surface than a hammer, and one that is tailor to the nature of the work. While a carver's slender mallet allows pinpoint control and a much lighter touch, the joinery mallets broad, flat striking surface is ideal for other tasks that require more force and less flexibility.

A square-headed mallet excels at driving chisels to chop joinery, especially when cutting across the grain for dovates or mortises. It's also great for project assembly and other tasks that require a firm rap or two. Another great thing is that a mallet is easy to make.

Start with a blank of splinter-resistant hardwood such as hard maple. A block about 3 in. sq. by 41/2 in. to 5 in. long will make a mallet head that is massive and heavy enough to deliver a blow with great force when needed. You can glue up such a block if you do not have 12/4 stock available, but be aware that the glue joint might fail ever.

A through-mortise in the mallet head provides an attachment point for the handle. To make it, find and mark the center in the top of the blank. Then, using a drill press or a hand-held drill with a spade bit bore a 3/4-in. diameter hole through the blank, top to bottom. Use a rat-tail (round tapering) rasp to elongate the hole on the top of the mallet head by 1/16 in. to 1/8 in. Toward the end grain in each direction. The wider opening should taper down about halfway through the mortise. If you do not have a rasp or file, a 1/2-in. dowel and some course wallpaper will do a decent job.

Next, mark the striking surfaces of the mallet for cutting at a slight angle from top to bottom. An angled surface will strike the butt of a tool handle more squarely because the mallet itself will typically be angled slightly upward when the blow lands. Cutting the ends is simple on the bandsaw. Plane or sand away the sawmarks. It's also a good idea to bevel the edges and corners of the block to prevent splintering.

The handle also should be of a sturdy, straight-grained hardwood such as maple, birch, hickory, or oak. Start with a 12-in. length that is 3/4 in. thick by 11/4 in. wide.

Begin by marking the layout for the tenon that will connect the handle to the head. At one end, mark a centerline to bisect the width of the piece. Use this line to lay out a 3/4-in. square. Next, mark out a shoulder line 31/2 in. from the end of the piece and then cut away the waste on the bandsaw to create the square tenon. The extra 1/2 in. of tenon length will allow the tenon to protrude from the mallet head so it can be trimmed flush after glue-up.

Making a square tenon round is reliably easy if you follow the steps shown in the photos on p. 34. (Of course, if you have a lathe, you can turn the entire handle. mortise. The handle should fit snugly, but you should not have to strike it to drive the tenon all the way into the mortise.

Next, use a bandsaw or a handsaw to cut a sawkerf about 21/2 in. deep down through the center of the tenon and perpendicular to the 11/4-in. dimension. This kerf will hold the wedge that secures the handle to the mallet head. You want the wedge parallel to the striking surfaces. If it was parallel to the long grain, it could split the mallet head. Before assembling the mallet, shape the handle for a comfortable grip.

To keep a solid connection between mallet and handle, I drive a glued wedge into the kerf in the top of the handle. This expands the handle against the walls of the mortise and tightens the fit. Make the wedge 2 in. to 3 in. long, no thicker than 1/4 in. to 3/8 in.

To assemble the mallet, put a little glue on the inside of the mortar and push the handle into place, making sure it's oriented correctly to the striking surfaces. Next, apply some glue to the wedge and hammer it into the sawkerf. When the glue dries, saw off the wedge and the excess length of handle, then chisel or plane the top smooth.

Wipe on a little Watco or linseed oil for an optional finish. Avoid wax-too much will make the grip slippery.

Thick Pavers vs Thin Pavers

What is the difference between thick and thin pavers? Where should you use either product? Do thick pavers cost more than thin pavers? Can I install thin pavers on top of my driveway? These are common questions we get from homeowners all of the time.

Thick pavers range from two and three eighths of an inch to three and half inches in thickness. They are typically used in new construction. When you build a new home and choose pavers for your hardscaping, thick pavers will be used. If you add a new pool to your existing home and decide to install pavers as the decking surface, thick pavers will be used. If you want a new patio in your backyard, thick pavers will be used. If you want to redo your driveway with pavers, the existing concrete should be removed, and thick pavers will then be installed on top of base material.

Thin pavers were created to remodel existing pool decks, patios, sidewalks, and front entries. They are perfect for any non-vehicular application that remodels an existing concrete slab. By a technical definition, thin pavers are not considered pavers. Instead, they are considered to be a tile. Their thickness relative to their shape prevents them from being considered a paver. Typically, thin pavers are anywhere from three quarters of inch in thickness to an inch and a quarter. Since they are about half the thickness of regular pavers, they should cost less, right?

Unfortunately, on a material only basis, thin pavers cost the same as thick pavers. The reason for this is that overwhelmingly, thick pavers are in much higher demand than thin pavers. Therefore, it is a burden on the production company to produce their less frequently demanded thin counterparts. Paver manufacturers are in business to produce as many pavers as quickly and as efficiently as they can. When they have to shut the system down to change out shape molds and adjust machinery to accommodate thin paver thickness, they lose a lot of valuable production time. It can take hours to switch from one mold to the next. Additionally, since thin pavers aren’t ordered as often, the order quantities are frequently less and the manufacturer is forced to produce less pavers per mold and color. This inefficiency causes increased costs for the producers and they pass those costs on to their customers. So even though thin pavers use fewer raw materials to be produced, they take up more time, and time is money.

The good news is that if you are considering pavers for your home and you want to remodel an existing concrete surface, your job cost will be less than if you want to build something new. This is where the cost benefit of going with a thin paver versus a thick paver comes into play. Roofing Contractors Explain The Importance Of Your Roof's Drip Edge

When it's time to install a new roof on your home, the roofing contractors should explain in detail what all they will be doing and what the various components will be so that you understand the entire process and are aware of what you'll be purchasing. During this process, you'll probably hear some words or phrases you are not familiar with. One of these is the "drip edge." If you are not sure what this is or why it's important, be sure to ask some questions and get clarification before moving forward with the project. In the meantime, local roofing contractors explain what it is and why it's so important to protect your home from the elements.

What It Is

Put simply, the drip edge is a narrow band of a non-corrosive, non-staining, non-rusting material that is installed around the eaves and gables of your home whenever roofing contractors install shingles on your home. It's most often made from aluminum, galvanized steel or a sturdy material like what is used for flashing around chimneys and skylights.

What Is The Purpose Of The Drip Edge?

Its sole purpose is to prevent ice or snow from getting under your shingle and getting the underlay or decking wet, which can lead to roof leaks, wood rot, mold, mildew and a host of other problems. Properly installed, it can prolong the life of your roof for several years. Left off, it can lead to premature failure of your home's shingles. It is designed to channel moisture away from the underlay or decking by providing an outward projection lower line. There are two areas where this is critical and where reputable roofing contractors will always install a secure fastened drip edge – along the eaves of your house and along the gables or rakes at either end. It should extend to the lowest row of shingles out and over the eaves and rakes as well as over the gutters. This will funnel water away from the roof or directly into the gutters so that no moisture can see back underneath and rot the decking.

How Do Roofing Contractors Install It?

Experienced roofing contractors install the drip edge along the eaves and the gables in two slightly different ways so that they work together to protect your house all the way around and along all sides. Along the eaves (the lowest straight line of the roof along the sides of your house), it is installed beneath the underlay or ice and water barrier so that water flowing off of these elements can not see underneath. Along the gables or rakes, it's installed over the ice and water barrier or underlay. The ends should meet and overlap at each corner.

How Important Is It?

Top quality roofing contractors always include a drip edge when they install new shingles or other materials because it protects the decking and ensures that the shingles will last longer. Without it, your home's roof will be sentenced to wood rot, curling shingles and other problems. Most manufacturers' warranties for shingleles are void if they are installed without a proper drip edge, so it's always in your best interest to make sure it is included in any new roof installation.

Want to Know How to Apply Violin Rosin? I Will Teach You in This Article

Hello readers, today in this free online violin lesson I will be teaching you how to apply violin rosin. Rosin is what makes the violin bow grip the strings producing the sound of the violin. Without we would not be able to play violin. Your bow would simply glide over the strings making a whoosh sound.

You should rosin the bow every 3-4 days depending on how often you play. After a while you will develop a feel for how often you should apply the violin rosin.

Gas or Wood Burning Fireplaces in the Home

When building a new house or just looking to add romance or a new heating source to a particular room, many people find a fireplace an attractive option. But which kind of fireplace is best for a particular home? There are many types of fireplaces, but most people tend to narrow their options down to either natural gas or wood burning, each with their own pros and cons.

A wood-burning fireplace can be the perfect way to warm up a cold winter night with your significant other. The way the wood snap, crackles, and pops makes this way of heating a room a popular choice. One should remember, however, how much work a wood-burning fireplace can be. Cutting down trees, of course, is mostly a thing of the past without the house being situated in a rural setting, but storing wood safely from the elements for later burning is always a concern. The only financially efficient way to purchase wood is in large amounts, because running to the grocer everyday for a new little bundle really can add up over a long winter. This demands a nice, large area for storing; a cord of wood in your living room would probably be rather intrusive and less than romantic. If you are looking for an efficient way of heating your room, a wood-burning fireplace is definitely not it, since most of the heat goes up the chimney, leaving you with residual particulate to breathe in as well; a particular no-no for allergy sufferers. A way to improve upon this inefficiency is with the purchase of an insert or woodstove. These are relatively expensive and require cleaning from time to time. If you enjoy tending a fire, a wood-burning fireplace is for you, because they demand constant attention, adjusting and rearranging the wood for optimum flame and warmth.

Most consumers today, at least in America, have come to enjoy instant gratification. Microwave ovens, ordering movies from home, cellular technology which makes everyone essentially reachable almost everywhere; all of these things make life in America and other capitalist countries some of the most comfortable and enjoyable places to live. Why compromise for anything different when heating your home? A gas fireplace lights instantly at the push of a button. If more heat is desired, one only need turn up thermostat, no tending, adjusting, maintenance necessary. For ample heat and no mess, a natural gas powered fireplace is the overwhelming choice of contractors and homebuyers in America. Natural gas distribution companies like Triple Diamond Energy Corp work hard to provide the clean burning natural gas for millions of fireplaces across the country so that homeowners will not have to, experiencing the warmth and beauty every time they push the button.

Brick Laining – An Innovative Systems Example

Have you ever watched an expert team of bricklayers work as they form the beautiful exterior shell of a new home? To this day, I can see vividly the cohesive and hard working team of folks who built the home that my wife and I built a few years ago in Michigan.

I remember visiting the home on a day when a pile of bricks had just delivered and were still sitting on pallets. I returned the following day to find the majority of the brickwork to have already been completed. It was not the fact that the bricklayers had bricked almost the entire home in less than a full day of work. I personally experienced many top performing service providers who amaze me with their efficiency and rate of production. However, there was something else at which I was taken aback.

The only portion of the home that had yet to be bricked was the top quarter of the two-story colonial. The workers had built an intricate maze of scaffolding in order to reach the areas still exposed with exterior wallboard. Some bricklayers were on top while others danced around the pile of bricks on the ground.

I looked at the pile of bricks sitting atop the scaffolding platform and thought to myself, "Wow – that sucks having to get all of those bricks up onto that platform". Without hesitation I had assumed that the bricks were lifted from the ground to the platform with a Skytrak. It was only a few minutes later that my claim was proved wrong.

I looked up and saw a bricklayer on the ground literally throwing six bricks at a time up to another bricklayer who stood up the scaffolding. While in the air, the bricks separated just as a stream of water fans out once leaving a garden hose. With each toss, the bricklayer on the platform calmly scooped all six bricks out of the air, grouped them, and added them to the growing pile. I stand for several minutes and stared in amazement.

My mind had assumed a standard system. Would not it just make sense to lift bricks using a machine? Instead the bricklayers had developed an innovative set of actions that streamlined the bricklaying process. There was no need for a Skytrak or any sort of third party equipment. The only thing needed was traditional human ingenuity that led to bricks being tossed up in a manner to expedite the entire process.

The next time that you engage in thought about your business systems, challenge yourself and your team members to think outside of the box. Innovation is not something only for the world of product design. Systems can (and should) be improved by interjecting a dose of innovation.

What is the Difference Between Blown in Insulation and Rolled Insulation?

Few people are aware that there are even different ways to insulate their home, let alone the fact that there are some glaring differences among the different methods. Which is better suited for your particular situation? Rolled insulation, or batting as it is sometimes referred, looks like a better option to some people and it's the most often the most recognizable option to most home owners. It seems like the youngest, cleanest and easiest to install option, but it has its advantages and disadvantages just like the blown in insulation that a contractor would come and install in your house with machines.

The Advantages of Rolled Insulation

It's true that you can quickly and easily procure rolls of insulation at your local home improvement center and begin performing the work on your own – the same day if you so choose.

Self Satisfaction

For many home owners, there are few things that are satisfying and rewarding as setting out a plan for a home improvement project, getting all of the necessary supplies and completing the project on their own, with no outside help what so ever.

The Advantages of Blown In Insulation

Despite the fact that rolled insulation is specifically manufactured to fit right in between standard sized studies or joists – it simply can not match the "fill" of professionally installed blown in insulation. Blown in insulation provides optimal performance because it fits securely into every nook and cranny, it will fill every crack and crevice and surround every piece of conduit and every obstacle, providing a much more effective barrier than rolled insulation.

Speed of Installation

A team of qualified professionals will come out to your home with all of the necessary equipment to properly take care of, in a matter of a few hours, what it could very well have taken you a few days to do with rolled insulation. In addition to the speed, they'll be able to get into areas with blown in insulation that you would have never dreamed of getting into with your rolls of insulation.

Considering the cost of the materials, the higher level of protection from the elements that blown in insulation has over rolled insulation, and the amount of time and work that you will not have to invest, it could be very well worth a little bit higher of an initial investment to have the blown in insulation installed by professionals. You may come to find that the money you are saving on your energy bills will help pay for that extra cost in no time.

If your home was built prior to 1970, chances are you may have no insulation at all in your walls and you probably have insufficient amounts of insulation in your attic and your crawl space. The insulation in your attic or crawl space may be deteriorating or water damaged and simply may be incapable of providing the protection that your home needs from the elements.

Depending upon your location or situation, rolled insulation may very well be more than sufficient to suit your particular needs, but in areas with rough, harsh climate changes you may need to have blown in insulation installed for your home to be as efficient on energy as possible.

Having the right type and quantity of insulation in your home makes sense; it will make your home more comfortable and save you money. Each different type of insulation has advantages and disadvantages, so if you are not too sure about what your home may need to be properly insulated then consult a qualified professional with an insulation blowing machines to help you make the right decision so you can begin to get the most out of both your cooling and heating systems.
