Private Note Holder Leads

The private note holder industry is one of the greatest opportunities available in the market no matter the economy. There are always going to be opportunities in this industry for someone to make money. If you know anything about Real estate and the value of the industry then you know about cash flow. If you have cash flow then you have wealth. Many people will start buying seller finance notes to create this cash flow. Other times notes are created to facilitate the sale of a property but the holder does not want to hold the cash flow. It does not really matter why they do not want it. Sometimes there are other interests where they want to put the money or maybe they just want to have the cash now. Whatever the reason there are many private note holders who would rather sell the note they hold for cash. To them immediate cash is king.

If you are looking to work the note business as a broker or beginning buyer of notes then the right note holder lead list is important for you to be able to contact these potential note sellers. It is also important to understand what such a lead list really is and what your expectations should be. It is true there are many of these note holders who do not want to keep the note they ended up with. It is not true however that any company can offer you a note holder lead list which exclusively contains people who want to sell. Not holder lead lists are simply public record data that has been collected for marketing purposes.

There are some important things to understand before buying a mortgage note holder lead list. The first is to understand the data and recognize it for what it is. With many consumer lead lists the data is simply declined from current addressees and is current with the name and address that exists now. This type of list is not a specialized list. When you are dealing with a more specialized list such as seller finance note holder leads, the data you seek is specific to the document that was recorded and not to the current address or name. With the private mortgage not holder list you are seeking data that was recorded often years prior. It is the action of the private note being created that you are seeking.

Once you understand that the data is often "old" data due to the nature of the requested information then you can move to understanding the statistics. Make yourself aware of the possibilities of what may have happened since that note was created. The best possible option is that the note was created and the seller or note holder still lives at the same address and no mistakes were made in recording and he wants to sell.

That is not always the way it goes however. Often times the note is created and then the seller moves. Other times the house he used as an address is later demolished and a new sub division created in it's place. There are many such situations and changes that may occur that can cause the address originally recorded to no longer be valid for a mailing. This does not make your list a bad list. After all you are looking for a specific occurrence and not a specific person right? You are seeking a note that was recorded. There is no change required to public record filings that will allow you to chase a note holder once they move or the address is no longer valid.

Therefore when purchasing a note holder lead list you must understand the statistics and be ready for them. Because you are searching for a specific event in public record a percentage of 20% to as high as 50% of the note holder lead information may no longer be a deliverable address. You will get cards coming back stating they are undeliverable. From those that arrive at their target however you will have plenty of value to help you towards your goals.

Restoring Your Garden Trampoline

With spring nearly upon us, many of you will now be venturing into the garden to tidy up and make preparations for the new Season. If you have a trampoline and it’s looking a little tired after the long cold winter, here are some tips to help restore it to its former glory.

Trampoline Frames

The trampoline frame is at the heart of the trampoline for its safety and performance. It is vital that the frame is in good condition. It may be possible if you find damage or corrosion to source a new part and replace that section but if this isn’t possible, or the frame is beyond economic repair, you will probably have to scrap it. Inspect the frame carefully. Look for corrosion from water that has got inside the trampoline ring and is causing rust from the inside which might not be easily visible but causing a weakening of the trampoline frame. Many cheap trampolines will not galvanise the inside of the trampoline tubing and this does leave them liable to failure in this way.

If the trampoline has a welded frame check the condition of the welds carefully to ensure there is no fracture. This is a common area for the trampoline to fail, perhaps from overloading or just from a poor quality weld.

This is the most important area for checking as a frame could fail whilst in use leading to a possible serious injury for anyone who is using it at the time.

Trampoline Jump Mat

The trampoline mat may have holes in it caused by things falling on it like branches or fireworks (a common culprit!) or even a cigarette end. The trampoline mat (or jump mat as it is sometimes known) can be replaced. You will need to know the size of your trampoline, the shape of it and the number of springs it has to attach to. You may also need a spring tool to remove the old trampoline mat and install the new one. It can be hard work to do this without a spring tool. Make sure that any new trampoline mat is made of A grade Permatron Polypropylene, which is UV resistant, and sewn with UV resistant thread. The V rings to attach to the springs should also be galvanised to prevent rust.

Remember when you remove the old bounce mat to take off the springs in even stages around the edge so as to maintain the tension across the bounce mat evenly until you only have four springs left attaching it at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, then finally remove these. When installing the new mat start by putting these four springs on first and then build up the tension by gradually putting springs on to split the gaps. You will find this makes it much easier when you come to the final ones.

Trampoline Springs

Your trampoline springs may have become over stretched or corroded over time and require replacement. You will need to know how many springs your trampoline needs, and the length of these when they are at rest (to do this you need to remove one that is in the best condition and not over stretched). Measure the full length of the spring from the outer edges of the hooks at either end.

You may need to order a spring tool to help you remove the old ones and install the new ones. See the “bounce mat” section of this article for instructions on the method to use when removing and reinstalling a large number of the springs at one time.

Don’t be tempted to use a spring that is a different length than those you have. It will cause the performance of your trampoline to be reduced significantly.

Trampoline Net/Trampoline Enclosure

The trampoline net can become damaged in high winds if garden debris is blown into it or maybe the trampoline has been blown over and the safety enclosure got damaged in the process. The net can also be damaged by children gabbing it while they are jumping and pulling it down.

With some designs of trampoline enclosure it is impossible to replace the netting alone and a whole new trampoline safety enclosure will need to be purchased. However, some suppliers offer the netting separately to fit their own design of trampoline and this might also fit some other makes.

If some of the trampoline enclosure poles, top caps or sleeves are missing, or damaged, then these can easily be replaced too rather than buying a whole new trampoline enclosure kit.

Trampoline Spring Padding

Probably the most likely part to need replacing on your trampoline is the spring padding. Over the years the fabric, however well made, will deteriorate under strong sunshine and in heavy winds. The cold weather can also make it brittle which results in it cracking. It is important not to use the trampoline without any spring padding as someone could fall on the frame and receive an injury if it is not protected.

Many cheap trampolines use a PE material which will probably require replacing annually as the material tends to crack in the sunlight. Spending a little more on better quality spring padding can save money in the long run.

Trampoline Cover

In future, a good tip is to remove the spring padding at the end of the season to protect it from the elements. Alternatively buy a trampoline cover to give added protection to the whole trampoline. The trampoline cover will help protect the bounce mat, springs, spring padding and to some extent the frame also by preventing rain water getting inside the tubing. Some people collapse the safety enclosure on to the centre of the trampoline at the end of the Autumn and cover the whole thing with the trampoline cover.

In this instance, if high winds are forecast, it might be wise to secure the trampoline cover with some rope or strong twine as most covers are not designed for severe weather conditions.

Other ideas

If you are buying parts for your trampoline you might want to consider choosing some other accessories to make best use of any postage charges you are paying. Popular accessories include:

Trampoline access ladders, Trampoline anchor kits, Trampoline tents, Trampoline skirts and Trampoline shoe bags.

Hopefully all of these tips will help to keep your trampoline going for many more years to come.

Happy Bouncing!

Paper Trimmers are an Important Tool For Home and School

Paper trimmers are used at home, school, and in the office. There are many types that you can buy that will cut different things. You can cut paper, cloth, and foam materials. So you will have to choose a cutter based on the type of material you want to cut.

A lot of paper cutters can cut up to 700 sheets of paper. Using a guillotine paper cutter, like the one found in schools, can handle most of your daily tasks. If you need to cut a lot of paper then you might be better to buy a stack cutter which can cut through even more pieces of paper at one time.

Some people do not know that you can cut business cards with the table top cutters. There is even specific card that you can purchase to make them professional and fancy. They will definitely save you money because you can print on the card, cut them, and send them out to your clients or potential customers.

Another great use for a paper trimmer is for making name tags for work. Just like the business cards you will be able to make precise cuts. After the card is cut you can then laminate them. If you have photographs that need to be printed out you can cut them precisely as well. Some cutters have a picture guide that will allow you to adjust it to the most standard sizes.

How about making and cutting your own greeting cards. There is no need to mess around at the gift shop when you can do everything from home. I recommend you use a heavy paper so that it feels authentic. Giving someone a hand-made card will mean much more to them than a bought one. There are many more uses for paper cutters than those outlined in this article. Your investment in this tool should be a good one over time.

The Combi Boiler – A History

It is not only this century and the last, that man has tried to heat their homes and water.

Throughout history mankind has tried to heat their homes, cave men with the fire. Ancient Asians used hearths and stoves to heat water or air, channelled through their floors. While the Romans used hypocausts to heat up their public baths and villas and the Spanish radiated their floors with a system locally known as ‘gloria’, which used hay as a combustible.

During the middle ages, when fireplaces started to become popular, heating systems became virtually unknown. Until in 1777, William Murdoch discovered that gas could be used for light. Then in 1824, the birth of gas cooking emerged, and naturally evolved to be utilized to heat homes and water for bathing. Surprisingly, baths were not used until 1850 when gas jets would heat the bath from underneath.

However, it wasn’t until 1868 when Benjamin Maugham, painter and decorator had the idea of heating water with gas. Although, Maugham didnt realise it, the technology of heating our homes in the 21st century was born. He is generally accepted as the inventor of the Combination ‘Combi’ Boiler, which he called “the Geyser”.

Maugham invention disappointingly, was seen as dangerous and a health hazard as it had no temperature controls so scalding was possible and it had no flue for ventilation, meaning people could be exposed to lethal emissions. He was not an engineer and would make little or no money from he’s invention.

But in 1889, 21 years later a Norwegian Engineer Edwin Ruud came across Maughams ‘Gas Geyser’ prototype and after studying the design plans and making a few improvements, Ruud launched he’s own water heater in the US, after emigrating from Norway. Hes new Ruud Manufacturing company was a huge success and is still running today in Pittsburgh.

Initially, the combination boilers were popular in the US, and was exported to Europe where it was highly popular, however in the UK, many people opted for the traditional system boiler which utilized space in the loft and allowed many people to bathe simultaneously. It is only in the last 10-15 years that combi boilers have started to emerge as the number one boiler system in the UK, attributed with over 50% of all new boiler installations.

With energy prices rising year on year many people have opted for the combi boiler due to its advancement in efficiency, energy cost savings and the ever growing need for more storage space in their homes compared to the inefficient, high running cost and huge storage needs of the traditional system boilers.

Angels – Angel of Forgiveness Balthiel

Forgiveness is such an important and essential part of the manifestation process and here’s why… when there is any thought or emotion that lowers our inner-vibration, there is something to forgive.

In its most simplistic from, forgiveness is releasing you from emotional prison. Any negative emotion causes lack and delay to attracting prosperity and abundance, clients and customers and being able to recognize and say “yes” to opportunities.

Being able to truly forgive others and ourselves in the process, not only clears all channels for increased giving and receiving, it also raises our inner-wealth frequency.

It isn’t about saying that what someone said or did was okay or that you are opening yourself up to attracting more of the same.

It is however, giving you permission to let go of the hurt, freeing you to move forward. Anytime we are able to let go of anything — and anyone — that feels like a burden, we raise our inner-vibration.

The Angel of Forgiveness, Balthiel, will help you understand the truth of forgiving others and yourself. He will help you go below the surface of the pain you feel so you can get to the root cause and release all that no longer serves you.

He helps you surrender and accept the past as part of who you are and embrace the present with an open heart.

Ask for help with emotional healing, releasing you and your heart from painful memories and experiences. You can ask for guidance to create healthy boundaries to empower you.

Be willing to accept responsibility for your actions, the part or parts that are yours. This isn’t about assuming full and complete responsibility for everything.

This isn’t an easy part of your inner-journey. It is essential if you are going to move forward, being open to receive all you want, need and desire.

Thoughts and emotions that lower your vibration, also lowers your point of attraction. When your point of attraction is low, you attract less of what you want and more of what you don’t want… that is the Law of Vibration.

Don’t believe me? Look around at the experiences and people in your life. Are you able to connect with your Angelic Guides? Are you getting the guidance, messages or clarity you want?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, you really need to raise your inner-vibration.

Our journey through the Heaven of Creation and the Angelic Realms of Powers, Virtues and Dominions is now complete.

Each Realm has its specific purpose in helping us heal our relationship with ourselves and with the people in our lives, past and present.

On every level, there is healing work to do. I do wish there was a point of completion. Unfortunately, healing continues as we keep on reaching for that next level of Spiritual Expansion, increased prosperity and step out beyond our comfort zone into the unknown.

As you open yourself to all that is shown to you, you will begin to sense energy shifts more intensely and more frequently. This is nothing to be alarmed about, just remember to breathe and ask Angels to help you embrace the changes with an open heart.

Mold, Relative Humidity, The Dew Point, And Your Home

Mold is an ongoing worry for homeowners. Due to the complexity of the biological process, mold is excluded in home inspection contracts. The problem has received so much publicity that many people wonder what conditions might lead to fungal growth in the home. First, more often than not, the problem will be brought about because of a water problem on the exterior such as a leaking roof or uncontrolled water that has allowed standing water in the crawl space or the basement.

In analyzing homes, professionals are usually concerned with relative humidity (RH) and that is a percentage of the moisture in the air. Air is saturated at 100%. It cannot hold any more moisture so, when air is saturated, condensation forms on surfaces. We start seeing obvious problems when that occurs.

The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold. But, when the temperature goes down overnight, the cool air is less able to retain moisture. If a home is 70 degrees F and the RH is 50%, what happens if the temperature goes down to 50 degrees F? Simple answer: The relative humidity shoots up to 100% and condensation becomes apparent.

Probably the first place a person will notice excess moisture forming, the condensation, is on windows but moisture could be occurring at or in walls as well. Research and experience indicate that condensation usually occurs on walls/sheathing and not as frequently inside walls or on insulation inside walls.

People often ask this question: What is the optimum relative humidity for my home? That is harder to answer than one might, at first, think. The quick number, at least for my region of the country and provided by the Northwest Clean Air Agency, is 30% to 50% with a reading as high as 60% not usually being a cause for much alarm. Keeping readings lower is best in the winter.

The problem is the dew point. Remember that air is saturated when relative humidity is 100%. Well, the dew point is the temperature at which water condenses inside the home. Some people think the dew point is a low temperature, around freezing, and that such a temperature could never occur inside the home. It is more complicated than that.

Some practical examples are in order. In a home, if the RH is 40% and the temperature is 69 degrees F the dew point in the home is 44 degrees — the temperature would have to fall to 44 degrees before condensation would form. This is a typical RH and temperature based on my studies in this northwest region of the country.

In another example, if the RH is 56% and the temperature is 70 degrees F, that change in the equation leads to a dew point of 53 degrees F. Condensation will form if the home drops to 53 degrees F.

In the final example, lets look at higher readings that might exist inside a home that is moist. With an RH of 77% and a temperature of 73 degrees F, the dew point is 66 degrees F — only 2 degrees under the 68 degrees that many people use as the ideal thermostat setting! If the home drops to 66 degrees, condensation will form on the inside.

It is obvious that, especially in winter, homeowners need to keep the relative humidity low. Where I live, in colder weather, it is more practical to keep a house somewhere above 44 degrees overnight than it is to keep it above 65 degrees.

This detailed information is beyond what most people, including inspectors, will be getting involved in on an ongoing basis. A word of warning, while you can obtain useful information from a relative humidity reading, it takes more than a single reading to gain enough information to make much of a determination as to whether or not a problem exists. It takes some study and analysis. And, some homes that seem like they should have mold growth do not, and the opposite can be true as well. Being alerted to this information helps one better understand why some houses have damp areas or stains. Excess moisture caused by high relative humidity can lead to damaged sheet rock, wood rot, mildew, mold, rust on metal, shrinking or expanding wood, reduced thermal resistance of insulation, odors. Frequently people ask what causes high relative humidity. It is not always easy to say but some of the usual suspects are showers, baths; cooking; washing clothes, dishes, floors and walls; breathing, perspiring; pets; uncontrolled surface water, wet crawl spaces and basements.

If you are, on a personal basis, interested in taking a look at the RH inside your home, purchase a relative humidity gauge (hygrometer) at an electronics store or online. You can easily find, online, dew point calculators or “psych charts” which allow you to determine the dew point from your relative humidity rand temperature readings.

Biodiesel Titration Solution – A Must For Bio Titration Kits

So now we’re going to do an actual titration. There’s two parts to doing a titration. There’s the first part you only do once and that’s getting your titration solution ready. You can use this titration solution for multiple titrations, however, I recommend that every ninety days you get rid of it and put a new titration solution together, and that’s because the KOH, the sodium hydroxide, the potassium hydroxide tends to oxidize with time, air, and UV rays, so you just need to make sure that you’ve got fresh stuff or you’re going to get false readings. The first thing we’re going to do is we’re going to take and add a liter of distilled water to a container. So there’s a liter. Then I’m going to measure out, with my very accurate scale, one gram of the catalyst I’m going to use when I make biodiesel.

My catalyst of choice is potassium hydroxide, so I’m going to balance my scale out, and then I’m going to set my scale to one gram. Notice it’ll fall. Very carefully I’m going to measure out a gram of KOH. You’re going to be amazed at how little one gram is. It’s really important to wear safety gloves while you’re doing this because this stuff really can burn. It’s quite potent stuff. Kay and we’ve got a gram. What we’re going to do is take this gram of our catalyst and we’re going to introduce it to our water. Then we’re going to allow this to dissolve. It will take a little bit of time to dissolve here, sodium hydroxide takes forever to dissolve by the way. It’s one of the reasons I like to use potassium hydroxide, is potassium hydroxide will almost dissolve on contact. Um, once this is dissolved we’re going to be putting it in this jug. So I’m going to let this wait for a minute and we’ll stop for a moment and come back when it’s dissolved.

Kay, we know have fully dissolved catalyst in our liquid here, so we’re going to just pour this right into our jar. This jar, we will use this for our titration solution going forward. Very slowly, I’m getting it in there. Kay we’ve finished putting our stuff in there. I’m going to seal this up, and just to make sure it’s good and mixed in I shake it a little bit. The next thing we’re going to do is do an actual titration. You can put this (the container) away, your funnel away and save it for when you need to remake your titration solution because you’re only going to have to do this once. Um, this is probably when you need to be the most cautious though because you are dealing with chemicals. One thing that is very important is you need to make sure that your chemicals always stay dry. If they don’t, they’ll ruin themselves much like hydrogen peroxide; if you leave the lid off it will destroy itself as well. That’s because oxygen from the air will react with it and neutralize it. If your chemicals are clumpy in any way, shape, or form, these are nice and clean, then you may need to get new potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. That’s one very important thing to know.

The Difference Between Glass and Crystal Wine Glasses

The delicate ting of fine crystal stemware is as much a part of the process of enjoying fine wine as is the satisfying plop of a cork being extracted. If you’ve ever sipped out of a fine crystal wine glass, you know it’s different from a plastic cup, or even a glass goblet. But why? Is it just perception, or is there really a discernible difference?

First, a few definitions are in order. Merriam-Webster defines glass as “any of various amorphous materials formed from a melt by cooling to rigidity without crystallization,” and goes on to specify “a usually transparent or translucent material consisting typically of a mixture of silicates.”

Merriam-Webster defines crystal as “a clear colorless glass of superior quality; also objects or ware of such glass.”

So as the term relates to stemware and drinking glasses, we are generally talking about a transparent material made from a mixture of silicates. The most common type of glass is soda-lime glass, composed of about 75% silica. Interestingly, when lightning strikes sand, “fulgurites” can form, which is glass that is an impression of the lightning strike.

Defining the difference between crystal and glass is not exact. All crystal is glass, but not all glass is crystal. There are no universal rules that define crystal, and different countries use different standards for defining crystal. That said, the lead content of glass is the main determinant in the classification of something as either glass or crystal. The amount of lead that defines crystal varies amongst countries.

In the European community, glass with 4 to 10 percent lead monoxide is designated glass. Glass with a lead content of 8 to 10 percent is called lead glass. Glass goods with a lead content of between 10 percent and 30 percent earn the designation of crystal. Goods containing more than 30% lead monoxide are called lead or leaded crystal. In the United States, a lead monoxide content of 1 percent is sufficient for glass to be designated as crystal.

So as you can see, the meaning of crystal versus glass changes according to the country, although the presence of lead is a defining characteristic.

Why is lead important? The presence of lead softens the glass, therefore making it more easily cut and engraved. Lead also increases the weight of the glass and causes the glass to diffract light. So glass is generally lighter in weight in crystal, and light will not diffract through glass.

The problem with leaded crystal, however, is that lead can leach out of the glass, especially glasses that often are used to contain wine or lead crystal decanters that store wine. Exposure to lead can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke and can cause memory loss.

Today, unleaded crystal glasses are offered by most major glass and crystal manufacturers. Lead-free crystal is not simply glass. Barium carbonate and zinc and titanium oxides replace lead oxide. This results in glasses with similar properties as lead crystal, such as temperature control and the ability to accentuate aroma and flavors of wine. Lead-free crystal has a similar refractive index to lead crystal, but is lighter.

Yes, wine glasses really can make a big difference in how wine tastes. If you’re drinking an everyday wine, such as your favorite mid-range Pinot gris or Merlot, you can use your everyday glasses because your glass choice won’t make that much difference. But if you’re lucky enough to be drinking a 2005 Pomerol from Bordeaux, you want to pay the utmost attention to the glass you choose. You want the proper size, shape and material to really appreciate such a fine – and expensive – wine.

It is still under debate if the effect of stemware material on how wine tastes is a matter of aesthetics or perception, or if there is a chemical reaction between wine and crystal. One theory is that crystal is rougher than glass and this roughness creates turbulence in the wine which, in turn, causes more aeration of the wine, and therefore more aromatic compounds are released.

Although the highest quality crystal glasses provide a better wine tasting experience, the high cost of these glasses prevents many from purchasing them. They are also very fragile, so you will have a high replacement cost. Fortunately, good-quality wine glasses are available at reasonable prices – including crystal stemware. You have to determine, based on how much you spend on wine and how much of a hobby it is for you, if you want to pay for crystal wine glasses. Standard wine glasses cost around $50 a dozen, crystal wine glasses perhaps $75 a dozen. The best crystal glasses, however, can fetch between $50 and $100 PER GLASS.

Beyond the material itself, thicker glass can still create distortions which affect what you see. The thinner the glass, the less between you and your wine, and thinner glass creates a finer stream of wine. This means that more air is mixing with the wine – here we refer to aeration again – so that more aroma and flavor molecules are released.

So yes, there are differences between crystal and glass stemware. Your lifestyle and level of interest in wine will determine how much you spend.

The Cairn Terrier As a Family Dog

The Cairn Terrier is often referred to as “scrappy”, and if you’ve ever owned one you certainly know why! These are energetic and resilient little dogs that will certainly give you a run for your money if you let them. Even for terriers, they are very athletic, hyper, and stubborn. Nine times out of ten your Cairn Terrier will tire you out long before he or she is ready to call it a day.

Cairn Terriers are an adorable breed and are often mistaken for potential lap dogs by those searching for a new pet. The Cairn Terrier will not and can not be happy as a sedentary pup. This breed needs lots and lots of exercise, and will consistently act out if not properly stimulated. A tired Cairn Terrier is a happy Cairn Terrier – if your dog does not have enough physical activity in its day, he or she will no doubt resort to chewing, digging, or any number of other destructive behaviors.

The Cairn Terrier is also a little Houdini of a dog. This breed is notorious for escaping from the most complex situations. For this reason, you must take extra measures to “terrier-proof” your yard and home. They are excellent diggers and will find a way to get under your fence and run away – that is, if they can’t figure out how to get over it! Pouring cement at the base of a fence or gate is the easiest and most effective way to curb this behavior, but even that isn’t foolproof. It is very important that you never leave your Cairn Terrier unattended outdoors, even if it’s only for a moment.

The Cairn Terrier, being a very intelligent breed, is also very stubborn. Because of this, it is imperative that one enroll their dog in obedience training courses at a very early age. The benefit of using a course as opposed to training at home is twofold: it provides a regimented resource for learning new tricks and curbing negative behavior, and it also provides invaluable socialization with other people and animals. If your children are old enough, they should accompany you to obedience classes to learn how to properly handle and care for your family’s new pet as well.

While Cairn Terriers are generally very happy and friendly, they are not encouraged as pets for extremely young children. Cairns may not know how to act or respond around a baby or infant, and active children of a young age are often too aggressive or rough for such a tiny dog. Regardless of age, your children must be taught how to handle your new dog on a leash or in the home with gentleness. Cairn Terriers, though sturdy and playful, can be quite fragile in certain scenarios. One hard pull on the collar can lead to a complete tracheal collapse, which will of course kill the dog.

It is important to work with your children so that they understand the needs and weaknesses of owning a Cairn Terrier, which is why the breed is recommended mostly for families with older children who are capable of comprehending this. The Cairn Terrier will make a loving and entertaining family pet, so long as he or she is treated with the care they deserve!

Boxing: Knocking Out Racism and Inequality in America

Modern boxing is as old as America. They grew up together, and like America herself, boxing is as majestic as it is brutal. It’s as beautiful as it is primal. From the bloody and outlawed “exhibitions” in New Orleans to the “bare-knuckle” brawls in the shantytowns out West, boxing came of age with America. It has been called the “Sweet Science” and “the Manly Art of Self Defense,” but ultimately “boxing is a sport of confrontation and combat, a weaponless war,” pitting two warriors against each other to do battle in the squared circle.

We can trace the history of America’s poor and disenfranchised through the arc of boxing’s past. Prizefighting is a prism through which we can view the history and struggles of America’s most disenfranchised. Its heroes of legend often exemplify the social problems of the day. In many ways, the fight game serves as a means of “socioeconomic” advancement. Author and boxing historian Jeffrey T. Sammons states in Beyond the Ring: The Role of Boxing in American Society: “The succession [of great fighters] had gone from Irish to Jewish… to Italians, to [B]lacks, and to Latin[o]s, a pattern that reflected the socioeconomic ladder. As each group moved up, it pulled its youth out of prizefighting and pushed them into more promising… pursuits.”

Two fighters in particular epitomize the struggle of their people: the brash Irishman John L. Sullivan, and “The Black Menace” Jack Johnson.

Boxing’s Origins

Boxing has its origins in Ancient Greece, and was part of the Olympic Games in around 688 BC. Homer makes reference to boxing in the “Iliad.” Boxing historian Michael Katz recalls the sports primitive origins:

Much like the first American settlers, prizefighting made its way to the New World from England. And like the pilgrims, boxing’s early days were often brutish and violent. Sammons states: “Like so many American cultural, social, political, and intellectual institutions, boxing originated in England. In the late 1700s, when the sport existed only in its crudest form, prizefighting in Britain assumed an air of sophistication and acceptability.

The early Puritans and Republicans often associated game playing with the oppressive monarchies of Europe, but as American opponents of leisure lost ground, the sport quickly began to grow. In the 1820’s and 1830’s boxing, often called pugilism, became a popular sport amongst the American “immigrants who were unaccustomed to restrictions upon amusements and games.”

As the sport grew in popularity amongst the immigrants, so too did the myth of the individual. For better or for worse, the United States is a nation weaned on the myth of the individual. This is the American Dream, that fundamental creed that we can all “pull our selves up by the bootstraps” and become wildly rich, outrageously successful, and madly fulfilled. For nearly two hundred years the “Heavyweight Champion” was the crown jewel of the sporting world, and the physical embodiment of the American Dream. He was the toughest, “baddest man” on the planet, and commanded the world’s respect.

Sammons states: “[T]he physical man still stands for the potential of the individual and the survival of the fittest. He is the embodiment of the American Dream, in which the lowliest of individuals rise to the top by their own initiative and perseverance. The elusiveness of that dream is immaterial; the meaning of the dream is in its acceptance, not its fulfillment.” During the 1880’s, no one embodied the physical man, or the American Dream, more than boxing’s first great heavyweight champion, John L. Sullivan.

John L. Sullivan and the Plight of the Irish

Sullivan, also known as “The Boston Strongboy,” was the last of the “bare knuckle” champions. The son of poor Irish immigrants, he was a brash and hard-nosed man who toured the “vaudeville circuit offering fifty dollars to anyone who could last four rounds with him in the ring.” Sullivan famously challenged his audiences by claiming, “I can lick any sonofabitch in the house.”

“The Boston Strongboy” became one of America’s first sports legends when he snubbed millionaire Richard Kyle Fox, owner and proprietor of the National Police Gazette and the National Enquierer. Legend has it that one fateful evening in the spring of 1881 while at Harry Hill’s Dace Hall and Boxing Emporium on New York’s East Side, Fox was so impressed by one of Sullivan’s boxing matches, that the newspaper tycoon “invited him to his table for a business talk, which Sullivan impolitely declined, gaining Fox’s hatred.”

Sammons states:

Fox was furious and vowed to break Sullivan as well as control the crown. He did neither; Sullivan beat all comers, including a few Fox hopefuls.” Sullivan became an international celebrity and American icon “who had risen through the ranks without looking down on others. Sullivan did more than build a personal following, however; he helped elevate the sport of boxing. The prize ring now spanned the gulf between lower and upper classes.”

Sullivan became a symbol of hope and pride for recent Irish immigrants living in a new, hostile land. Nearly two million Irish immigrants arrived in America between 1820 and 1860. Most arrived as indentured servants and were considered little more than slaves in the new country. Of those two million immigrants, roughly 75 percent arrived during the “The Potato Famine” of 1845-1852. The Irish fled from poverty, disease, and English oppression. “The Potato Famine” had claimed the lives of almost a million Irishmen.

Author Jim Kinsella states:

America became their dream. Early immigrant letters described it as a land of abundance and urged others to follow them through the ‘Golden Door.’ These letters were read at social events encouraging the young to join them in this wonderful new country. They left in droves on ships that were so crowded, with conditions so terrible, that they were referred to as ‘Coffin Ships.’ (par. 1)

The Irish arrived in America destitute and often unwanted. An old saying summed up the disillusionment felt by American immigrants in the Nineteenth Century: “I came to America because I heard the streets were paved with gold. When I got here, I found out three things: First, the streets weren’t paved with gold; second, they weren’t paved at all: and third, I was expected to pave them.”

Kinsella says:

Our immigrant ancestors were not wanted in America. Ads for employment were often followed by “no Irish need apply.” They were forced to live in cellars and shanties… with [no] plumbing and [no] running water. These living conditions bred sickness and early death. It was estimated that 80 percent of all infants born to Irish immigrants in New York City died… The Chicago Post wrote, “The Irish fill our prisons, our poor houses… scratch a convict or a pauper and the chances are that [we] tickle the skin of an Irish Catholic. Putting them on a boat and sending them home would end crime in this country.

But the Irish arrived in America during a time of need. Kinsella continues:

The country was growing and it needed men to do the heavy work of building bridges, canals, and railroads. It was hard, dangerous work. A common expression heard among the railroad workers claimed “an Irishman was buried under every tie.

John L. Sullivan was the pride of the Irish during his legendary championship reign between 1882-1892).

Historian Benjamin Rader wrote:

The athletes as public heroes served as a compensatory cultural function. They assisted the public in compensating for the passion of the traditional dream of success… and feelings of individual powerlessness. As the society became more complicated and systematized and as success had to be won increasingly in bureaucracies, the need for heroes who leaped to fame and fortune outside the rules of the system seemed to grow.

During his decade long reign as champion; no one captured the public attention more than “The Boston Strongboy.” He destroyed Paddy Ryan in Mississippi City, Mississippi for the “Heavyweight Championship of America” in an illegal “boxing exhibition” on February 7, 1882. The championship belt was named the “the $10,000 Belt” and was “something fit for a king.” Sammons states: “It had a base of flat gold fifty inches long, and twelve inches wide, with a center panel consisting of Sullivan’s name spelled out in diamonds; eight other frames eagles and Irish harps; an additional 397 diamonds studded the symbolic ornament.”

After receiving the “$10,000 Belt,” Sullivan pried out the diamonds and sold it for $175. He later went on to defeat his arch nemesis Jake Kilrain in the seventy-fifth round, marking the final “bare-knuckle” championship bout in boxing history. Sullivan reigned supreme until his knockout loss to a younger, faster, more skilled fighter named “Gentleman” Jim Corbett in the twenty-first round on September 7, 1892 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Jack Johnson and Black Oppression

Boxing historian Bert Sugar once said: “Boxing is a strange, strange sport. Bottom line, it’s legalized assault, but it has given people throughout history a chance to better themselves. [I]t has always been a sport of the dispossessed and of the lowest rung on any ladder.” Except for the Native Americans, no group in American history has been as “dispossessed” as African Americans. They were stolen from their homes in Africa, and transported under deplorable conditions to suffer a life of slavery in America. “From the 16th to 19th centuries, an estimated 12 million Africans were shipped as slaves to the Americas. Of these an estimated 645,000 were brought to what is now the United States. [According to] the 1860 United States Census, the slave population in the United States had grown to four million.”.

From the first moment they set foot on American soil, life was brutal for blacks in the New World. Although the black slaves gained freedom after President Abraham Lincoln issued the “Emancipation Proclamation” on January 1, 1863, it would be roughly one hundred years before blacks achieved full equality in America. The twenty years between 1880 and 1900 were exceptionally hard ones for blacks in America. Congress passed a series of anti-civil rights acts, culminating in the Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896 guaranteeing second-class citizenship for blacks, and marked the beginning of the Jim Crow era in America.

Although there were many great black fighters during this twenty-year period, blacks were barred from fighting for the heavyweight championship. Sammons writes: “By the 1880’s the heavyweight boxing championship symbolized… America’s rise to world power… the holder of the title stood as a shining example of American strength and racial superiority.”

But the retirement of the “granite jawed” and undefeated heavyweight champion James Jeffries in 1905 left a whole in the division. After a slew of uninspiring champions came and went boxing fans began to lose interest. By 1907 the time was ripe for the first black heavyweight contender. The sportswriters of the day believed a black fighter would bring public interest back into boxing, while also proving “white physical and intellectual superiority.”

In 1908 a legend was born, and his name was Jack Johnson.

Jack Johnson, later known as “The Black Menace,” was an unknown fighter from Galveston, Texas. He would become one of the greatest and most courageous athletes in the history of American sports. He was a huge man with a flashy smile and incredible speed. In and out of the ring, Johnson was larger than life. Although he left school in the fifth grade, Johnson was a smart and worldly man. He played the bow fiddle, loved opera and literature, idolized Napoleon Bonaparte, and even invented and patented a tool used to fix automobiles. He also loved fast cars, fancy suits, and white women. Worse yet, white women loved him back. When one reporter witnessed a successive parade of women leaving Johnson’s hotel room, he asked the champ for the secret to his “staying power.” Johnson replied, “Eat jellied eels, and think distant thoughts.”

Actor James Earl Jones, who played the legendary Jack Johnson in the film Great White Hope states: “He lived life by his own rules with his balls, his head, and his heart.”

The sportswriters of the time believed the “destruction of the insolent, defiant Johnson, a usurper of white privilege, [to be] a morality event of good versus evil, [which] would serve as a lesson akin to a public lynching for blacks who did not know their place in American society.”

They couldn’t have been more wrong.

Jack Johnson pummeled the white heavyweight champion Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia, to gain the crown. After the fight, “The Black Menace” became an instant hero for blacks suffering under the legacy of three hundred years of slavery, and the yoke of racist Jim Crow policies. Headlines from the Richmond Planet read: “No event in 40 years has given more satisfaction to the colored people of this country than has the single victory of Jack Johnson.” After winning the title, Jack Johnson would lead the boxing world, and white supremacists alike, on a seven-year chase to unseat the newly crowned champ and return the belt to its “rightful ethnic group.” Thus began the era of the “Great White Hope.”

The era of the “Great White Hope” was as comical as it was tragic. Promoters scoured the country searching for white contenders over 170 pounds. One sportswriter recalled: “In the heat of the search, well muscled white boys more then six foot, two inches tall were not safe out of their mothers’ sigh.”

Johnson, also known as “The Galveston Giant,” fought and destroyed the next five opponents including middleweight champion Stanely Ketchel. The fight with Ketchel was especially memorable. Before the “exhibition,” the two fighters, who were old friends, had agreed to take it easy with each other, and they did until the twelfth round when Ketchel saw an opening and floored Johnson with a right cross to the head. After rising to his feet, Johnson was so enraged that he knocked Ketchel out cold with one crushing uppercut to the jaw. The punch was so devastating that Ketchel’s front teeth were impaled in Johnson’s boxing glove. Fight replay shows “The Black Menace” plucking the great middleweight champion’s teeth from his glove after the fight.

White America became enraged following the humiliating defeats of the “Great White Hopes.” Jack Johnson’s success threatened the entire foundation of American society. Worse yet, there was another black heavyweight on the rise, Joe Jeanette. Never before had white privilege and superiorly been so successfully and violently challenged. Sammons writes: “Almost as alarming to whites was the success of another great black heavyweight boxer, Joe Jeannette. Together Johnson and Jeanette seemed to spell doom for white superiority… “

The calls for the return of retired heavyweight champion and boxing legend James Jeffries became deafening. Following the Ketchel defeat, author Jack London wrote: “A golden smile tells the story and the golden smile is Johnson’s, but one thing remains, Jeffries must return from the alfalfa farm and remove the golden smile from Jack Johnson’s face.”

Jefferies agreed to fight Johnson, saying: “I feel obligated to the sporting public at least to make an effort to reclaim the heavyweight championship for the white race… I should step into the ring again and demonstrate that a white man is king of them all.”

The match between Johnson and Jeffries was billed as the “Battle of the Century.” Jeffries was an undefeated legend. All of the white man’s hopes rested on the broad shoulders of James Jeffries. He was mean as a grizzly, had a chin made of steel, and hit like a truck. He stood six foot, two inches tall and was a ripped 225 pounds. In his prime, Jeffries could sprint 100 yards in just over ten seconds, and could high jump over six feet.

Although he had been retired for the previous three years, Jeffries trained for the Johnson fight as if his life was on the line. He lost an astounding 100 pounds and came into the fight determined to smash Jack Johnson and restore the status quo in America.

The fight produced a level of public hysteria never before seen in America. For white Americans, Jeffries would reaffirm African inferiority “and the white desire to exterminate these barbarians.” For blacks, Johnson was fighting against a legacy of racism and persecution. Reverend Reverdy Ransom wrote: “[W]hat Jack Johnson seeks to do to Jefferies in the roped arena will be more the ambition of Negroes in every domain of human endeavor.”

Reno was abuzz leading up to the fight. A town of 15,000 residents was bursting with boxing fans. People slept in their cars or on park benches. The bars and jails were full. “One restaurant with a capacity of 30 persons served thirty six hundred suppers.” Jack London wrote: “Reno, Nevada. July 1, 1910. I am glad I am here. No man who loves the fighting game, has the price, and is within striking distance of Reno should miss this fight. There has never been anything like it in the history of the ring.”

The two fighters finally met on July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada, in front of 20,000 riotous fans. Jack Johnson battered the larger man. He was younger, faster, and more skilled than the 34-year-old Jeffries. He beat him to the punch, and tied him in the clench when the two fighters engaged. By the fourth round it was obvious Johnson was the better man.

“The Galveston Giant” walloped the former champ. He beat and battered him. He danced and smiled and joked with the crowd, before unleashing a crushing combination to the body, and a ripping right hand to the head of the challenger. Johnson toyed with Jeffries the way a tiger would toy with an old tomcat before finally pouncing in for the kill in the fifteenth round. The impacts of Johnson’s crushing blows were felt across the country. There were race riots in every major city across America. Historian Randy Roberts said: “[N]ever before had a single event caused such widespread rioting. Not until the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., would another event elicit a similar reaction.”

Black America had found a hero in Jack Johnson. For the first time in American history, they could stand up tall and be proud of their heritage and their people. Not only did Jack Johnson defeat James Jeffries that fateful night, but he also knocked out 300 years of racism, humiliation, and oppression. The film of Johnson’s victory over Jeffries was banned by congress in America. Johnson was later arrested in 1912 and spent a year in prison for “transporting [white] women across state lines for immoral purposes.”

He was again arrested on similar charges in 1913. He later skipped bail and fled to France with his wife Lucille, where he spent seven years in exile. In one of the most controversial fights of all time, Johnson lost the championship in Havana, Cuba in 1915, to an uninspiring cowboy named Jess Willard. To this day, legions of boxing experts, including “The Galveston Giant” himself, contend the fight was a “fix,” arguing that Johnson threw the fight in exchange for leniency on his impending court cases in the United States.

Nobody, but Jack Johnson will ever know for sure if he threw the fight. What we do know is that over the next twenty-two years, black fighters were systematically denied a chance at the heavyweight championship by a conspiracy between government and boxing officials. The “black out” would last until 1937, when the legendary African American fighter, Joe “The Brown Bomber” Louis defeated James “Cinderella Man” Braddock for the heavyweight title.

And so begins the era of Joe Louis, and the beginning of the longest and most storied championship reign in boxing history.[1]

[1] Joe Louis held the heavyweight championship for a record 12 straight years from 1935 to 1949. During his championship reign, Joe Louis successfully defended his title 26 times, setting the all-time record. In 2005, “The Brown Bomber” was “ranked the #1 heavyweight fighter of all-time by the International Boxing Research Organization, and was ranked #1 on The Ring’s list of the 100 Greatest Punchers of All Time.”

The Jet Ski Versus the Boat – Is There a Winner?

Time to open the wallet and purchase a watercraft for some summer pleasure on the pond, lake, or ocean. The decision to buy some form of watercraft has been made but the decision of the exact make, model, and type has yet to be determined. By type of watercraft I mean boat or jet ski… Jet ski is actually a trademarked term for the Kawasaki personal watercraft. Personal watercraft (or PWC for short) of any brand have been called jet skis for years. The model name stuck to PWC’s the same way the word band-aid is used in reference to virtually any bandage. By habit, I too refer to all PWC machines as jet skis. But back to the issue at hand. Purchasing one particular type of watercraft for summertime pleasure can be a tough choice. I’ve personally both a personal watercraft and an open-bow power boat. Let’s explore the differences, the benefits, and disadvantages of each. These two types of watercraft have many differences that may affect your final decision.

Boats, first of all come in many sizes and shapes and they can be priced for many budgets. In all fairness, we will use an eighteen foot bowrider as the boat of comparison since base models can be priced in the ballpark of higher end jet skis. The boat differs form the jet ski in its size first of all. This is an advantage if you are looking for room to move aboard the craft. This is also an advantage if you plan on taking multiple family or friends. An eighteen foot open bow boat and carry anywhere from six to eight passengers depending on model. Size is a disadvantage if you are short on storage space or if you aren’t the best driver when it comes to trailering a boat. Boats can also be a challenge to launch from a boat dock. Whereas a jet ski can be launched and even sometimes carried into the water with ease. The boat can be less than economical regarding fuel consumption versus the more fuel friendly pwc. The boat has the advantage of being versatile. Family and friends can be towed in a tube or similar toy. Water skiing becomes and option with the power boat as well. Then there is fishing… with plenty of room for rods, reels, and accessories why not try to catch dinner? The jet ski can’t accommodate water skiers, tubers, and fisherman in quite the same way. The personal watercraft however, offers something a boat cannot.

The ride can be compared in many ways to a cross between a snowmobile, a powerful sportbike, and a speed boat. It offers the thrill of riding instead of driving. Earlier models were mainly comprised of stand up configuration but the newer models mainly consist of sit down versions. The passenger capacity has also increased to two, three, and even four passenger models. The open-air feel of jet ski transportation is the main draw and competitive racing and watercross events add to the excitement. The PWC mainly appeals to the young and the young at heart.

I guess when it comes time to choose between a jet ski and a traditional boat, I’d recommend a visit to your local marina as well as a dedicated boat dealer, and a motor sports specialist. It won’t take long, you’ll know in your gut the direction you’d like to take on the water. Both choices have distinct advantages over the other, and both choices are ideal for creating many new memories on the water.

What to Do When You Get a Saddle Sore: A Guide for Cyclists

Saddle sores almost inevitably occur amongst serious cyclists to varying degrees. If treated proactively, saddles sores should only be a short-lived hiccup. Left unchecked, saddles sores can progress into legitimate medical and/or surgical emergencies requiring prescription medications and painful procedures. Therefore, it is imperative to address these problems head-on when they first arise.

What is a saddle sore?

“Saddle sore” is a nebulous term that mean different things to different people. It can mean anything from a horrible life-threatening infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues to just feeling bruised from a long hard day in the saddle. For our purposes we will refer to saddles sores as an actual visible lesion of the skin and/or subcutaneous tissues of the area of the body in contact with the bicycle saddle or seat. Saddle sores come in two basic varieties: skin breakdown (e.g. chafing and ulcers) and subcutaneous lesions (e.g. boils, carbuncles, furuncles, abscesses, and other “lumps”).

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

The best way to combat saddle sores is to not get them in the first place. Here’s a list of 10 things a cyclist can do to prevent saddle sores:

  1. Bike fit – This is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT measure you can take to prevent saddle sores and general discomfort on the bike. If you are a serious fitness, recreation, or competitive cyclist, you owe it to yourself to pay for a professional fitting session. I nquire at your local bike shop.
  2. Cycling shorts – There are just a few pieces of equipment in cycling where, relatively speaking, you should spare no expense. Quality bike shorts will have a molded pad (i.e. “chamois pad”) in the crotch area made of COOLMAX or similar polyester-based material. This material is designed to wick away moisture, provide cushion, allow for airflow, and prevent chaffing.
  3. Saddle – A quality bike saddle or seat is of obvious importance when it comes to the comfort of your posterior. Saddles come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, cushion thickness and type, and construction. Since no two pelvises are the same, try out as many saddles as possible before settling on the right one for you. Many shops have programs where you can test drive multiple saddles before purchasing. Some manufacturers have models of varying widths that can accommodate your specific pelvis measurements (e.g. Body Geometry by Specialized). You might be surprised to find that the cushiest and widest saddles are often the most uncomfortable.
  4. Skin – Clean and dry is your mantra when not riding. Always try to remove your shorts as soon as possible after riding. Head to the shower as soon as possible too. If you do not have an active sore or chafe, then assure after showering that your crotch is dry before putting on undergarments.
  5. Undergarments – Between rides, wear lightweight undergarments that allow for maximum airflow and do not promote moisture build-up (cotton is king here).
  6. Laundry – Do not wear shorts twice without washing them! Cleanliness is important when it comes to preventing saddle sore.
  7. Unctions and tinctures – Old school riders swear by dousing their most delicate areas with isopropyl alcohol when ramping up early mileage with the thought that this toughens up their skin. If you can withstand the sting, then this will certainly aid in drying your nether regions after a post-ride shower. Beware, it hurts and may not be entirely necessary.
  8. Inspection – Take a look at your crotch frequently. Look for areas of chafing, redness, and little bumps. You might be surprised by what you find! Some of these spots can be fairly asymptomatic so you’re only going to know that they are there if you look. Pay close attention to “little bumps” as they can grow into large boils and abscesses. The best remedy for these little bumps or chaffed areas is time off the bike or a decrease in mileage. You can also try a variety of ointments available on the market.
  9. Rest – Just as your body needs rest to accommodate a training load, your crotch needs time away from the bike.
  10. Chamois cream – Either you use it or you don’t. Most people become habitual users once they try it. Chamois creams were initially created to condition chamois pads when they were made out of actual animal hide. These days, a chamois cream is essentially used to decrease friction between a rider’s skin and chamois pad. Some brands use botanical ingredients to hinder bacterial and fungal growth. It’s these microbes that are the big culprits in non-healing saddle sores. Beware of brands that use mineral oil and silicone as they can breakdown modern chamois pads and clog the airflow properties inherent to the material used in chamois pads

Treatment of saddle sores

Areas of minor skin breakdown can usually be healed rapidly with a short-term decrease in riding volume or, better yet, complete rest. The area of skin breakdown should be cleansed with simple soap and water twice daily. Avoid hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol as they can inhibit normal wound healing. A topical ointment like Neosporin (or other over the counter triple antibiotic ointment) can speed up the healing process.

Bumps or hard knots under the skin are typically a more serious condition than skin breakdown. Additionally, these lesions can be quite painful. If at all possible, a complete break from riding is the best path to a speedy and uneventful recovery. As above, cleanse the area twice daily. Although ointments can soothe subcutaneous lesions, most do very little to speed the healing process as they cannot penetrate the skin deeply enough to reach the area of concern. For subcutaneous lesions that produce thick drainage and areas associated with fever or intense redness of the skin, see your physician. Antibiotics and surgical drainage of these lesions can be necessary in some cases.

***You should seek medical attention if:

1. You notice an area of intense swelling and redness around ANY saddle sore.

2. You develop a fever associated with a saddle sore

3. Your saddle sore worsens after treating it as above

4. You develop drainage of thick material or pus from a saddle sore

Sunburn Cures – Do’s and Don’ts

Time is of the essence when treating sunburn and the quicker you can attend to it, the faster you can get relief. Sunburns can be very uncomfortable and irritating, but what’s more frustrating is if you keep on receiving false information on how to cure it. It’s sad to know that some of the so-called cures we often receive are no treatment at all. In fact, some of them can make sunburn even worse. Fortunately, there are also others that are proven truly effective.

Here’s a list of the things you should and shouldn’t do if you have sunburn:

1. Don’t use the shower. The pressure of the water from a shower can prove to be painful to skin that is affected by sunburn. Instead of giving you relief, it will only increase the pain.

Do take a bath using a dipper. Using a dipper when taking a bath will give you complete control on the pressure of the water that’s hitting your skin. You can also soak yourself in a bathtub for a more relaxed bath time.

2. Don’t use ice cold water. Whether you’re taking a bath or applying cold compress to your sunburn, avoid using ice cold water or placing ice directly on your skin. Ice can stick to your wound and cause severe pain. It can also cause some damage to your skin’s nerve.

Do use lukewarm or cool water. Cool or lukewarm water is gentler to the skin. Also, wrap ice with towel when applying cold compress so that you can cool your sunburn without adding damage to your skin.

3. Don’t peel blisters. Sun burnt skin usually peels naturally so peeling them off when they’re not yet ripe will only produce more wounds and worse, infection.

Do drain them. Severe blisters needs to be drained especially those that do not break by themselves. However, you don’t want to drain them yourself to avoid infection, but instead take them to a doctor and have them drained safely.

4. Don’t apply apple cider vinegar. Applying vinegar as relief to sunburn is a common misconception by a lot of people. First of all, vinegar is sour and putting it on your wound is just like putting acid on it.

Do apply aloe vera gel. Most people consider aloe vera as a great sunburn relief. It contains healing properties that both cools and soothes sunburn. You can either take an aloe vera plant from your garden and extract the juice or purchase a bottle of aloe vera gel from the local pharmacy.

5. Don’t apply petroleum jelly. Greasy products such as petroleum jelly or butter can clog skin pores and trap heat causing more pain and infection.

Do apply cortisone ointment. Always use ointment as sunburn cure. Cortisone ointment most especially is an anti-inflammatory salve that can reduce swelling and soothe the burning sensation caused by sunburn.

6. Don’t wear tight clothing. Sunburn is skin wound and any contact with any object can increase pain and swelling.

Do wear loose clothing, preferably silk material. Wear loose shirt and pajamas especially when going to bed so that you minimize contact with your skin. If possible, wear clothing made of silk since silk doesn’t easily stick to wounds.

7. Don’t go out until you’re totally healed. Obviously, exposing yourself to the sun after getting a severe sunburn will only worsen your condition. The sun’s rays can reflect on any object outside like the sand, a wall, or the ocean, so even if you’re not directly under the heat of the sun, sunlight can still hit your skin and aggravate your sunburn. What’s more, having repeated sunburns can lead to more serious skin conditions like skin cancer.

Do stay inside the house and get rest as much as possible. Prevention is better than cure so stay home and avoid sun exposure as much as you can to prevent the harmful rays of the skin ever touching your skin. While doing so, get as much needed rest combined with a healthy diet of nutritious foods and a lot of water to keep your skin hydrated.

There’s no need for you to get confused anymore with some home remedies that do not work. The next time you acquire sunburn, go through this list and follow each step very carefully for your relief.
