What Is An Expansion Area? Why Do We Need It?

Expansion areas are spaces left around the perimeter of rooms, against fixed objects such as columns, thresholds, hearths, skirting boards, and other stationary items built or secured into the framing structure of the home. Even though Hardwood flooring used is no longer living and breathing it still responds to moisture changes in the environment. The cells in the solid wood will take on or absorb moisture when the relative humidity is high, or when exposed to water. Expansion takes place, and the hardwood grows, for lack of a clear term, across the grain (width) of the plank (see below, not all will react this way). Conversely when air moisture levels decrease, moisture content evaporates, shrinking of the solid wood will occur.

When we say spaces, they are defined as installing the hardwood flooring up to and away from the fixed objects. For example; "we recommend at least 15mm small to medium area-18mm expansion on larger areas at the skirting board or wall if new skirting to be fitted."

Hardwood flooring can react to the presence of moisture. In the dry winter heating months, moisture can leave the wood flooring causing the floor to contract quickly in size, which can leave slight gaps between each floor board. In the summer months when the humidity is higher, the hardwood flooring will expand and the gaps will disappear. If there is too much moisture in the subfloor it will cause the wood planks to cup, or buckle. Nearly all problems related to hardwood flooring are due to improper installation and sub floor preparation. This is why it is important when installing hardwood flooring that you follow the correct recommended installation methods by the manufacturer.

Direct Glue Installations

A direct glue installation requires the use of a flooring adhesive applied directly onto the subfloor (never directly apply to the boards). This method can be used on concrete and wooden subfloors. When done correctly this is the most stable method for fitting solid wood flooring as the elastic flooring adhesive allows the floor to expand and contract with no problems.

If you are laying over a concrete subfloor you will first need checked the concrete moisture, if the floor has a moisture content of over 4% then either wait until the sub floor dries to meet this level or use an appropriate moisture barrier, we recommend Sika Mb Primer to ensure no damp rises up into your new floor.

Also note that new concrete slabs require a minimum of 60 days drying time before covering them with a wood floor.

All Concrete sub-floors must be dry, smooth, level and free of structural defects. If the concrete sub floor is uneven we recommend using sika latex self leveling compound to level the subfloor. The concrete must also be free of contaminants ie paint, oil, wax grease, dirt and curing compounds (the reason for this is that you need the self leveling compound to bond to the sub floor). local hardware store and they will sell you the correct floor cleaner, but do not use solvent-based strippers under any circumstances. The use of residual solvents can create problems with the bonding of flooring adhesives. It is important to ensure a proper bond between the adhesives and concrete and wood panels.

If you have a wooden subfloor you will need to lay a plywood base over the existing floor boards (we recommend using 4mm -6mm outer grade plywood and screw down every 15cm along the edges and at 20cm intervals through the rest of the board using the 1 inch deck screws) before installation, this will then give you a smooth and level surface for you to install you hardwood flooring onto.

You will need to leave a 15mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the room for large areas over 6 meters in length we recommend 18mm expansion gap. To maintain this gap during installation spacers are provided in the kits. Nailed Down Installations

Nailed down installation is the traditional way to install hardwood floors and can be done either directly onto wooden subfloor or on a concrete subfloor with the use of battens. When fixing battens onto concrete you will need a power-activated nailer to drive through the battens and fix directly into the concrete, firstly lay out polyethylene moisture sheet then plywood over the battens to create a new sub floor. We recommend 12mm exterior grade plywood and 2inch x 4inch battens. Lay battens around perimeter at inch inch from the wall, leave inch inch gap at each end. Position the first batten so its center is 16 inches from the outside edge of the perimeter batten. Lay out the remaining battens across the area 16 inch intervals. Always check you battens are level using a level gauge you may need to use cedar shims to level out dips in the concrete, slide the shims under the battens until level. Wooden Subfloor

Hardwood floors can be nailed into existing wooden subfloors such as floorboards or plywood but not into chipboard floors as these are not strong enough to hold the nails. The floorboards must be in good condition and level if not it is adviseable to lay 6mm exterior grade plywood down first.

To avoid creaking, check over the subfloor and securely fasten any loose floorboards. For added soundproofing it is also advisable to use a standard foam underlay.

When you nail down a solid wood floor you use a Porta Nailer to drive a nail at a 30 degree angle through the tongue and into the subfloor. Porta Nailers can be hired from any good hire shop but are expensive to buy.

Again you will need to leave a 15mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. To maintain this gap during installation spacers are provided in the installation kits.

Now, the design of the carpet itself is very important and needs to work in conjunction with the rest of the interior, just like the color does. Now there are countless designs and patters out there for you to choose from and even if none of those you look at satisfy you, you can still opt to have a custom-made carpet. Make sure that the pattern you select is in tone and harmony with the rest of the room, without of course, you want the carpet to be a sort of centerpiece, allowing it to stand out.

If patterns and designs are not to your liking and you simply want to go with a "clean" carpet, there is no need to burden yourself with catalogs and tons of options. Having a simple, one-colored carpet or rug can bring simplicity into an environment or help emphasize the simplistic atmosphere you've already created.

After the choices of color and patterns, comes the decision of fiber. Carpets come in many different textures, depending on the types of fabric they're made from. This is an important step, as the type of texture you select, will have an effect on the ways, in which you'll clean the carpet, as well as the products and methods you'll have to employ. Taylor Made Golf Putters

Although Taylor Made is mainly famous for its drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids, the company does have an interesting line of putters. There are 10 putters offered, and one of the unique features on them is the Rossa insert which uses a technology called AGSI which stands for Anti-Skid Groove System Insert. This 14 groove insert can actually be applied to any putter, and it has been shown that simply adding the insert on the face of a putter will produce less skid, and the ball will begin to roll more quickly. This will of course improve the line the ball rolls on and it allegedly improves distance control for the golfer as well. At this point the attributes of the ten putters offered by Taylor Made will be described.

The Corzina putter is a mallet like club, but the body is made in what is called a wire frame construction. Instead of a solid mallet, the back portion of the putter consistants of two bands of semicircular metal which meets in the back middle and are connected to a bar which extends back from the putter face. This design is clearly putting weight at the perimeter of the club head for higher MOI (moment of inertia) which means greater forgiveness for putts not stuck exactly on the sweet spot. The head is made of 304 stainless steel and has a black finish for an attractive look. The AGSI anti-skid insert is of course included on this putter and all the putters in the product line.

The Tourismo adds another technology feature in addition to its different head shape and design. That is, it incorporates what is called MWT, or Moveable Weight Technology. There are two ports in the back of the putter where weight can be added or subtracted to personalize the feel of the putter. The head shape is a reverse trapezoid which means that the back of the putter is longer than the face. Putting so much weight behind and at the perimeter of the putter head is meant to increase MOI. The wire frame construction technique is also used on the Tourismo, and of course the AGSI insert is included as well. Once again, the putter is made from 304 stainless steel and has an attractive black finish.

Another trapezoid shape is invoked with the Inza model, although this time the putter back is more solid looking and the wire frame construction is not used. Once again this shape is used to increase MOI. The Inza also uses both the movable weights to customize the putter feel, as well as the AGSI face insert.

Taylor Made offers several putters for golfers who prefer a more classic look. The Siena Classic is a blade inspired design with weight redistributed to the heel and toe areas of the club to increase MOI, although MOI on a design like this is bound to be less than designs like mallets or other shapes that have a larger back. Once again 304 stainless steel and a black finish are employed, as is the AGSI insert on the putter face.

The Imola Classic is another blade inspired design, but it has smoother lines than the more abrupt shapes of the Siena. It has pretty much the same features, including improved MOI from more weight in the heel and toe areas, the AGSI insert, and it also made from 304 stainless steel with a black finish.

The Modena Classic model looks quite similar to the Siena and has essentially the same feature set, that is, blade based design, heel and toe weighing for higher MOI, the AGSI face insert, and 304 stainless steel with a black finish. The differences are that the Modena has one alignment line on the putter back whereas the Siena has two, and the neck attachment to the shaft is different. On the Modena the neck and shaft seem to be fused, and there is no joint at their juncture.

The Daytona Classic is another blade-type design, and once again, it resembles the Siena. The putter head has smoother lines, however, and there is a slightly higher ridge at the top of the putter. The largest difference is certainly the shaft offset of the Daytona. Once again 304 stainless steel with a black finish is used, as is the AGSI face insert.

The Monte Carlo Classic is a mallet derived design. The symmetrical rear flange has more weight on the toe and heel sections for higher MOI, and this is enhanced even more because the mallet design puts more weight to the back of the putter head. All the normal features are included, and the shaft attaches to the head at about the mid point between the toe and heel.

The Monza Corza model is a modern mallet style putter that is quite similar to the Corzina, the first model described above. The main differences are that the MWT, or movable weight technology feature has been added by placing two ports at the back-center of the putter head. This model, which also employs the wire frame construction, does not have a black coating. Of course the AGSI face insert is employed on this model as well. The Monza Corza Mid is a belly putter, and it comes in lengths of 38, 41, and 43 inches. Both putters have little or no neck with the shaft connecting directly to the putter head. For the Mid model the connection is in the middle of the top area about mid-way between the heel and toe, while in the standard sized Monza Corza the shaft connects close to the heel area.

Once again, the AGSI insert technology is the single thread on all the different Taylor Made putter models. The putters look to be designed using sound principals, and for golfers who favor Taylor Made woods and drivers, a look at their putter offerings would be worth some time.

Brick And Mortar

We must all build our lives from the ground up, brick and mortar style. In that sense, we are all masons of our lives or spiritual builders. With that thought, I begin this article. Lately, I have personally studying for myself very deeply into the phenomena of the mind, both physical and metaphysical, and I realize one thing: Building a program within the mind takes twenty-one days or a little more, but it is possible to program the mind like a computer or a missile. What I mean to say is, like writing a somewhat complex program for an app or application, that is what it takes really about three weeks (for a good computer coder or programmer) to program the machine to do exactly what is wanted. Same with a human being in a sense. The only thing that may take longer in a human being though, is dealing with emotions and reasoning, but other than that, the same principle works in the same way.

So, line one in a program is like days one through seven in programming a mind in those senses. Week twenty-one is like writing line twenty-one hundred in a program. Beginning of program, middle of program, end of program, it is all the same. In a sense, we are programming a human application, but it is strikingly the same.

When I think of Uell Stanley “U.S.” Andersen’s work or read any of it, I genuinely and deeply think of these facts, also, if you want to change anything in your life, I suggest you give what I am mentioning in a brick and mortar way some thought too. Change is more basic and genuinely easy to do than you think. What is three concentrated weeks (or a little more) in one life with hundreds, even thousands of weeks anyhow? Not much.

Indeed, we are our own steersmen. If we were not, then, we would not even have individual thoughts or any programming power over our lives. In fact, we really would be blank slates that can “go where the wind blows”. Here, in this article, I am getting a basic reality about life across: We become what we think about if we think about it enough. Sure, I lifted/quoted part of that one from Earl Nightingale, but that is a reality that cannot be denied anyhow. What do you think those “nuts” Emile Coue and William Walker Atkinson/Theron Quincy DuMont meant by “Mind Building” anyhow? Some will get it, some will be irritated by the repetition of realities, but I end with the saying of a Bob Dylan song: You have got to serve somebody.

You either make direction or it is given to you. That is what I mean by that one about “you have got to serve somebody”. I am not saying “good or bad” or anything, but I am saying direction comes from you or it is given to you for good or bad, that is all.

How to Measure Gutters

A gutter refers to a channel, through which water or sewerage is passed. In common language, it generally refers to a sewer system. However, in this article we shall be referring to a rain gutter, which is also known as an eaves trough.

An eaves trough can be in different shapes and sizes. These channels perform the important function of flushing rain water from the roof, so that it does not cause any damage to the house. It does so, by reducing corrosion, as well as preventing leakages in the underground stores. Apart from that, it also makes way for rainwater harvesting. These troughs can be made from a number of materials, such as galvanized steel, painted steel, copper, painted aluminum, plastic, concrete, stone, cement etc.

It is perhaps due to this reason that most people tend to put a lot of emphasis, in this regard.

How to measure:

Step 1: Where do you want gutters?

This is the first question which comes to my mind. You should make sure that where on the roof should the gutter be placed and let me tell you one more thing and that is it is quite important to make sure that the gutters are placed at the best region of the roof. Otherwise the water will definitely settle somewhere on the roof and believe me that you will definitely be on the losing side since this can harm the roof of your house. Generally all kinds of roof generally gets damaged due to the water which gets stored over it.

Step 2: Measure where you want the gutters to run.

You will definitely have to make sure that the gutters are properly designed. Suppose your house is a three story. Then I am quite sure that you will have to decide that from where the gutter is going to run through various stories. You should make a plan because without the plan you will not be able to maintain it if some problem arises afterwords.

Step 3: Evaluate your downspouts.

Downspouts actually occurs from about every 20-30 feet for small downspouts and 30-40 feet for large downspouts. If you need the larger downspouts then believe me that you should keep it constant throughout the house.

Step 4: Count any corners you may need.

If the gutter sometimes bends or changes the direction, then I must tell you that you should note all the corners on the roof.

Step 5: Calculate your Gutter Quote!

The last thing is to measure the various calculations on the calculator and once you have done this then your new gutters are on their way!

Changing the LED Lights in Either Xbox 360 or PS3 Controllers

Changing the LED lights inside your favorite controller is quite simple. For each controller you will need a low wattage soldering iron, 60/40 rosin, a sponge, a pair of pointed tweezers, and your new LEDs. You can use a higher wattage iron, but it is safer to start with a low watt so you avoid possibly destroying your motherboard. To open a 360 controller, you will need a t8 screwdriver. A small Phillips head screwdriver is used for the ps3. When taking the screws out of the 360 controller there is a hidden screw found inside the battery pack terminal behind the rectangular shaped bar code sticker.

To start you will need to tin the soldering iron. This simply means to melt rosin on the iron and then clean it off with your sponge. When cleaning the iron, I found it works best to get the sponge slightly wet on one side. I like to clean the iron after each step to increase contact.

Once you have the screws taken out there are a few steps you will want to avoid breaking your controller case. To disassemble the xbox 360 controller, you will need to push in the thumbsticks and gently pry the controller apart. To prevent losing any of your buttons, I recommend applying a strip of tape to the front of the controller to hold everything in place. After you have done this, you will need to pull the rubber thumb sticks off their mechanism, pull out the motherboard, and set everything aside so you don’t lose anything.

The PS3 controller is somewhat easier to disassemble. Once you have the screws removed, you will just pull the two halves apart. Next, you will pull the rubber joysticks off, and pull the tab that connects the R’s and L’s off their clip. You are now ready to remove the old lights from the motherboard.

To remove the LEDs, I like to use a technique called floating. To do this, you will need to melt some rosin on the iron until it makes a little bubble on the iron itself. It might look like it is going to fall off, but do not worry, it will stay on the iron. Once you have this done, you will float the bubble back and forth across the LED to remove it. This will most likely take just a few seconds and the LED will stick to the rosin. Then you will just clean the iron off and repeat the process for each light.

Applying the new LEDs is a little more difficult than taking them off. First, you will need to look at the bottom of the new LED and determine which side the arrow on the bottom is pointing. You will need to point the arrow toward the negative side of the motherboard. If you cannot figure this out, turn the power to the controller on and the LED will light up if you have correctly lined it up. I like to leave the battery pack and the back half of the controller connected. This is so I can use the contact pad to turn the controller on. For the ps3, you can just plug in the charging cable. Once you have aligned them correctly, you will use your tweezers to hold the LED in place and just add a little rosin to both side and you are done. It might take some time but a little practice will make things a lot easier. Now you are ready to show off your newly light controller with your favorite color lights!
