Buyers Guide to Using MR16 Track Lighting

A lighting track system requires unobtrusive fixtures and diminutive bulbs to deliver discreet lighting for which it is desirable. The newer alternative to incandescent reflector light bulbs, halogen MR16 track lighting is compact in size and saves energy but not at the cost of illumination. The MR16, a halogen light bulb integrated with a pressed glass reflector, is a standard type of halogen multifaceted reflector light, along with MR11 and MR8, that provides excellent directional lighting.

MR16 halogen lamps save energy for over 60 percent more than incandescent. Low to medium-intensity, they are ideal for non-dichroic recessed ceiling lights, retail display lighting, landscape lighting and especially track lights. Theatrical or ambient, MR16 track lighting provides task or accent illumination such as tapered spotlighting or spread-out flood lighting.

Choose from an array of decorative finishes like satin or polished nickel, white cord or glass, antique bronze or brass, chrome or steel on monorail, 2 circuit rail or freejack track systems. Glass shields include little pleat, cargo solid, mission, flute, blossom, ribbed and handblown cased Murano on fixed, swivel, transitional adjustable, swing arm or other movable fixtures.

MR16 track lighting has low voltage 12V or 24V, low wattage from 50 to 75 watts, and stays cooler longer than incandescent. Tracks can be rigid, pendulum, joint sectional or flexible, which can be curved to S shapes, spirals, waves and more, and then re-bent later on. Buy pre-assembled or do-it-yourself kits, with track components, accessories and optical controls also sold individually, like track heads, connectors, cords, lamp sockets and lighting fixtures.
