Evolution of Lacquer Boxes

Lacquer boxes made their debut in the late 18th century days and have now become one of the most popular art works all over the world. The reason behind the success of making Lacquer boxes as an art was only due to the introduction of affordable tobacco in the midst of 18th century. The earliest Russian lacquer workshops, such as those of Korobov, Lukutin and Vishnyakov produced a variety of utilitarian items including snuffboxes, panels, powder cases, tea-caddies and desk accessories. It is believed that authentic Lacquer box makers would be one who is trained from anyone of the following four official schools called Mstera, Kholui, Palekh and Fedoskino. Today, the lacquer artists may work for the official workshop or work independently. Boxes and other objects are made of cardboard sheets, pressed and formed, then boiled in linseed oil. This papier-mache is then baked in an oven. At this point the material can be worked like wood. Trained joiners assemble the boxes, applying hinges and two coats of primer-paint. The blank is then oven dried and given to the artist to begin the painting. Extremely fine brushes are used to achieve the fine lines and details in each painting. Usually artists prefer painting with their brushes and mixing the pigments in their own compositions.

The procedure for getting admission starts with the application followed by training for a period of four years after which apprenticeship begins. Upon the successful completion and receiving good grades with considerably good quality control, their works will be exported. Hence a reputable factory seal or a flashy certificate is not the only documents that symbolize the authenticity of fine Lacquer box artists and their excellence. There are four categories of painting to be considered: one-of-a-kind compositions, limited editions by a single artist, “factory” compositions which can be used by all artists and reproductions from original works on canvas however the quality varies depending upon the categories.

Lacquer boxes are small fine works of art which are completely handcrafted and hand painted making each and every piece inspired and unique. A fine Lacquer box maker may even take several months to complete the making process. The Lacquer box making techniques do not involve newer concepts rather they are in practice before 150 years itself.

The art of Russian lacquer box miniature painting is gaining a lot of appreciation recently and has become one of the favorite pieces of collectible lovers. Unfortunately this has lead to the mixing up of inferior quality boxes in market made by less trained people. These fakes name themselves to be one of the authentic box makers from any of the four villages thus making the buyers fools. This can be overcome by educating yourself about the art and buying from reputable dealers.
