Fun Science Fair Projects Kids Can Do – Growing Seeds

These science fair projects kids can do are the second of our two part series about fruit and their seeds. In the first part we looked at the seeds themselves. In our first science fair projects kids can do we looked at how apple and hazelnut seeds look on the inside. Now we are going to look at seeds and how they grow. For these two science fair projects, kids can do, you are going to need a little time as the seeds have to grow.

These science fair projects kids can do are suitable for kids interested in biology.

In The First Project We Are Going To Look At How Seeds Grow

What you need for this project:

  • Two glass jars
  • Blotting paper
  • Two broad beans or runner bean seeds
  • Water
  • Felt tipped pen
  • Note book
  • Camera

What you have to do:

  1. Mark your jars A and B
  2. Curl the blotting paper inside the glass jars
  3. Now you have to push the beans, one in each jar, between the paper and the glass
  4. Add about one inch of water to each jar
  5. Place the jars in a light and warm place
  6. Have a look at the jars each day and take photos of how the seeds look.
  7. When the seeds start to grow make very sure you take a good photo of the roots of the beans growing in the jars. You will notice that the roots are growing downwards. Now turn jar A on the side so that the root points to the right
  8. Start looking at them everyday again and taking photos
  9. What happens in jar A?
  10. Why does it happen?

The Second Of Our Science Fair Projects Kids Can Do Is Growing From A Tropical Seed

The avocado stone is the seed of the avocado tree and here in South Africa I’ve grown the tree very successfully from a stone and it delivered a very big harvest for many years. As long as you finally plant it in a warm and protected area it is surprising where it will grow. Even if it grows only in the pot for a little while it will still be sufficient for you to observe the whole process and make the necessary notes and take the photos for your display.

What you need for this project:

  • An avocado stone
  • Three cocktail sticks
  • A glass jar
  • Water
  • Garden gloves
  • A pot plant pot
  • A trowel
  • Potting soil
  • A felt tipped pen
  • A note book
  • Camera

What you have to do:

  1. Make sure you clean of any flesh that might still be on the stone.
  2. Very carefully push the three sticks in the stone at equal intervals
  3. Fill the jar with water
  4. Suspend the stone, with the sticks, on the jar so that it just touches the water line
  5. Take a photo at this stage to show what it looks like to start off with.
  6. Place the jar in a warm shady place and top up the water regularly so that the stone always touches the water.
  7. Make your observations everyday and take photos.
  8. When the roots begin to grow downwards it is time to plant the stone in a potted filled with potting soil.
  9. Place the pot where the air is warm and humid and keep the soil damp but not soggy.
  10. Watch your seedling grow, make notes and take photos, you can keep this up as long as the plant can grow in the pot. This will depend on the size of your pot.

By combining these four science fair projects kids can do, you will have a pretty good overview of plants growing from fruit.
