Grow Plumeria From Seed – The Easy Way

Plumeria seed germination can be very satisfying and Plumeria are grown easily from seed, but the seedlings may not always remain true to their parent plant. Some will be the same, some will retain the parent plants characteristics and others may grow to become a completely new hybrid Plumeria Plant which is of course how new Plumeria Plants are discovered. Quality or the freshness of the Plumeria Seeds if you will is very important so make sure you obtain as fresh as possible and preferably ones that have been (painstakingly) hand pollinated.

Just by following these few simple steps you too can own a wonderful Plumeria Plant (Potentially a new Hybrid). Trust me when I say these plants are VERY easy to grow.

OK so here is what you need to do.

Soak your Fresh Plumeria seeds for between 8 – 24 hours. *I often soak mine before bed and then plant them the following morning*

Your Plumeria seeds should be planted in a 3-4 inch tray with bottom heat (propagator or heat mat is ideal). However I have had some germinate without any heat mat although the heat mat does yield greater results on seed germination rates.

Plant the Plumeria Seeds in a combined mix of cactus compost (40%) and perlite (60%) growing medium. If you prefer as I do then you can choose Coco Coir.

The Plumeria seeds should be inserted into the growing medium fat end first so the seeds are about ¼ inch deep with the feather / thin end sticking up from your growing medium.

Firm around your seeds and then water them in gently and you should start to see your sprouting Plumeria begin to show within 7 – 30 days in fact in some cases they may sprout even earlier than anticipated which is always a very welcome sight for anyone that grows from seed.

When your young Plumeria Seedlings have grown at least two true leaves, transplant them to small pots. They will begin to grow quickly and will bloom in about 2+ years all the while providing beautiful & lush green foliage which is wonderful on its own.

Whatever you do DO NOT OVER WATER your Plumeria Plants or Plumeria Seeds or you will kill them. I killed many of them this way so common sense prevails in this case. When in doubt you can gently mist the potting medium.

Re-pot your Plumeria Plant when it outgrows the one that it’s in.

Tip: When the Sun is shining and your Plumeria is a few months old try transplanting it into a pot that is several sizes too big for it and give it some good quality fertiliser (high middle number)…..WHY – Well you can almost sit and watch it grow in front of your eyes….it is amazing.

These are fantastic flowering houseplants that emit some of the most wonderful fragrances including: Fruit Punch, Peach, Fruity Scents, Grape, Lemon, Gardenia, Spice, Honey, Carnation, Cinnamon, Ginger, Honeysuckle and many more. Truly Outstanding.

Now you know how to grow Plumeria from seed why not try it? You will not be disappointed.
