How Delhi Got Its Name

Have you ever wondered how Delhi got its name? So, you are not yet aware how the capital city of the country got named! Many possibilities do exist about the origin of the name ‘Delhi’ as projected by historians. The most accepted view is that of the naming of the city after a Mauryan king named Dhillu or Dilu who established the city in 50 BC. ‘Dhili’ means ‘loose’ and this term was used by the Tomaras (a dynasty of the Gurjars, Jats, and Rajputs – the descendents of Arjuna, the warrior of ‘Mahabharata’ fame) to identify the city; the key reason being that the Iron Pillar built by Raja Dhava had a weak foundation. The pillar was then replaced. There are evidences of coins circulated in the name of ‘dehliwal’ during the rule of Tomaras. A group of historians believe that the city got its name from ‘Dilli’, an altered form of ‘dehleez’ or ‘dehali’, which means ‘threshold’ in Urdu. Delhi acted as a gateway to the Gangetic Plain of the country.

There are evidences of human habitation during the second millennium BC in and around Delhi or at least the 6th century BC. The city of Indraprashtha of ‘Mahabharata’ is believed to be the present Delhi. Remains of at least seven major cities have been discovered in this capital city of India.
