Tips

1. Stairs – One of the biggest things that you will have to change will be the stairs. They may have problems getting up and down the stairs, so you will have to install some safety features. In the beginning you might just have to install another banister and that will be enough to help them, but as they get older, you will have to get a stair lift installed.

2. Bathroom – If you only have a bath in your bathroom, you will have to think about getting a walk-in shower, which has a chair in, or getting a lift so that they can get in and out without falling.

3. Ramp – If they have trouble walking and they have a mobility scooter, then you will need a ramp installed so that they can get in and out of the house. This might mean a drastic change to the way that the house looks, but it will be worth it to make your Grandparents happy. Even though they will be leaving with you, they will not want to rely on you for everything, they will want to keep some of their independence and having a ramp will allow them to do that.

4. Door Handle – If your Grandparents have mobility issues, it might be better if you put an extra handle on the wall near your front door so they will be able to pull themselves in and ease themselves out the door. This option is definitely required if you have more than a few steps in and out of your house.

5. Non-Slip Flooring – If you have flooring that becomes slippery when wet, then you will have to make sure that those areas are covered with non-slip flooring. This is to make sure that they do not slip and fall. Elderly people can get hurt extremely easily and it takes them a lot longer to heal. Therefore, you have to make sure that they do not slip and fall.
