Plaque mounting is affordable compared to other options. There is no need for glass or glare. The print is permanently attached and it can not fade, buckle or wrinkle. Edges are finished with different colors that enable a frame-free contemporary look enabling it to be hanged on the wall.
In plaque mounting there are different techniques that is used. We have the classic tape, there is the self-adhesive backed photo corner, dry picture mounting technique, wet mounting method and spray mounting technique. The procedure for plaque mounting will be explained below.
Procedure for Plaque Mounting
When block mounting those that offer these services will need the following; measuring tape, medium density fiber board and the photograph or art print. The step by step procedures are;
• First they have to measure the art print or the photograph and then mark the medium density fiberboard. Using a carbide blade cut the MDF and using grit sandpaper cut the edges of the medium density board.
• They build a 1 by 1 cm thick frame which sits 2 inches from the edge of the board at the back of the board that you are using. This will prevent the board from flexing.
• Then next step is to Spray adhesive on the board and ensure you do not miss any spot. Spray another coat after 10 minutes and at the back of the poster then quickly place the poster on the board as you try to center it.
• Using a straight edge press the poster gently across the board. They ensure that as they do this there are no air pockets.
• They then leave it for up to 5-6hrs and then check to ensure that the poster has not lifted and if it has press and roll until the air pockets are there no more.
• They then get the polyurethane in a matte finish spray and spray it. They have to ensure they are in a well ventilated place and that it is not soaked. They then do the poly once again after 24 hours after drying.
• After 2 days the people who offer this service go and check to find out whether the paper has lifted. Then using a router that has a straight cutting bit they set a straight edge guide which will leave s them with a 1 / 8th gap which is between the edge of the poster and the edge of the board.
• In order to have a nice beveled edge, one has to run round the edges using a 45 degree bit for the router. They then cover the poster leaving the freshly cut edge looking exposed.
• They then get a spray paint and use it to spray the edges of MDF before taking the tape off.
