I want to begin this article by saying that nutrition is complicated and it can be very confusing, especially when there are so many different diets and opinions about how and what you should eat. Since there is so much competition among nutrition plans, each one tries to market a unique angle to help it stand out from the crowd. As a result, much of the information focuses on explaining why one particular plan is better than all the others. While this certainly helps attract new customers, it also makes people lose sight of the big picture by making them focus on the aspect(s) of the program that makes it different or unique. However, when it comes to nutrition, the last thing you want to do is lose sight of the big picture.

Even when the main focus of the eating plan is generally healthy and effective, it can still lead to problems if things are not kept in perspective. For example, one of the best approaches to fat and weight loss involves minimizing insulin level fluctuations and this strategy is used by a number of the more popular diet programs. However, while regulating your insulin level is responsible for many of the positive results, choosing the foods you eat solely based on their effect on your insulin level does not guarantee you will have a well-rounded or even healthy eating plan.

Keeping your insulin level in the right place is important, but it is still just one characteristic of the food, even if it is an important one. A food that helps maintain your insulin level can also contain high amounts of unhealthy fats or have a large number of calories, which will promote fat gain instead of fat loss. As a rule, you don’t want to include a food in your nutritional program just because it has one positive attribute. There is no perfect food that includes everything you need, so you always have to weigh both the positives and negatives when deciding the overall value of a food.

This can be difficult to do, especially when companies go out of their way to publicize the positive qualities of a food and try to hide the negative ones. For example, many products promote the food as positive by including big lettering with phrases like “all natural,” but the nutritional information on the back often tells a different story. The term “all natural” sounds healthy and these foods often are, but some of them still contain high levels of fat, empty calories, or even very unhealthy additives like MSG.

People also tend to lose sight of the big picture when they choose to eat foods just to get a particular nutrient. Probably the most common example of this is when people eat foods specifically to get more calcium. There is no doubt that calcium is important for your bones and your overall health, but so are many other nutrients and calcium isn’t important enough to ignore the overall nutrition of a food. Just because a food contains a significant amount of calcium, it doesn’t mean the food is necessarily healthy, regardless of what advertisers want you to believe.

Even so, there are many people eat cheese mainly because it is a good source of calcium. While it does have calcium, it also has a high amount of fat and calories and the fat contained in cheese is some of the unhealthiest fat you can eat. It is not as bad as trans-fats or partially-hydrogenated fats, but it is just a step above those. Cheese also has a negative effect on many people’s digestive systems, which causes a reduction in the amount of all nutrients you are able to absorb. If you think of cheese as just a calcium source it doesn’t seem bad, but considering it can also make you gain fat and lose other nutrients, it is clear that cheese is a food that is not good for your overall health.

The above examples show how looking at only one attribute of a food can provide misleading information about the overall quality of that food. While this does convey the importance of looking at both the positive and negative aspects of a food, it still doesn’t really give you the big picture of your whole nutritional program. To do this, you have to go beyond looking and specific foods and think about how everything you eat and drink adds together to form you total daily calorie and nutrient intake.

Even if every food you eat is healthy, it is still possible to have an unbalanced nutritional program that results in nutrient deficiencies. This can happen both with micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc.) and macronutrients (protein, carbs, water, etc.). For instance, many people strive to eat healthy foods and keep their fat intake as low as possible to help lose fat. Unfortunately, this is not a great long-term strategy, because certain fats are essential for a healthy body and avoiding fats altogether actually causes nutrient deficiencies and ultimately inhibits fat loss.

This is just one of many examples, but again it illustrates that there are numerous things to consider when deciding what foods to eat. Naturally this can get rather complicated, especially when you want to eat healthy foods and maintain a good balance of micronutrients and macronutrients. This is one of the reasons why many diets don’t really look at the big picture and only focus on one or two main points. While this strategy does serve to make things less complicated, it also means there is a greater chance of eating foods or developing habits that may lead you away from reaching your goals.

Personally, I don’t think you should stress about getting everything perfectly balanced and you can probably stick with that you are doing, especially if you are seeing positive results. However, you should still take a step back every so often and check to see if there are any significant problems with your eating behaviors or the total combination of the foods you eat throughout the day. In many cases, a few small changes to your nutritional program can significantly improve your results and your overall health, but you may not see any of the problems if you are not looking at the big picture.

Why Consider Mineral Water Healthy?

Why do we consider mineral water healthy? What about manganese ionic natural mineral water H20? What about other bottled brands? What's the best choice? Let's see if we can answer those questions here.

Company claims must always be viewed skeptically. The more amazing the claim, the more likely it is to be false. If a US company exaggerates too much, they can be brought up on charges by the Federal Trade Commission for making "unsupported health claims."

Even health supplement companies are not allowed to suggest their products for the treatment of specific diseases, but the manufacturer of manganese ionic natural mineral water H20 seems to think that the rules do not apply to them.

According to their website, their product is supposedly to be good for asthma, carpal tunnel, convulsions, infertility, sex drive, retarded growth rate, shortened leg bone, TMJ, slipped tendons and cartilage formation.

Even if you consider mineral water healthy, those claims are hard to believe. There are a lot of different and unrelated conditions on that list. Here's why I'm thinking, no way.

First off, what really makes mineral water healthy is unknown. We do not even know if it really is healthy. Natural springs rich in calcium may have been a good nutritional source in ancient times when dairy products were mostly unavailable. But, today we have a variety of dairy products and leafy greens that are much better sources of the nutrient.

And, the natural mineral water H20 brand does not even contain calcium. It contains manganese, which is an element. The company claims that drinking their product is better for your health than taking a vitamin supplement that contains manganese, because it is more bio-available in liquid form.

On the contrary the USDA is not quite on-board with that concept. "Because (liquid manganese) may be more bio-available than what is found in food, caution should be taken when using manganese supplements or drinking water that contains it." Not a shining affirmation …

In addition, individuals with liver disease may be distinctly susceptible to the adverse effects of excessive intake of this element. Manganese is stored in the liver and kidneys. Manganese is used for bone building and is found naturally in most plant foods, nuts and legumes. There is no indication that increasing your intake could help with any of the conditions stated on the company website.

So, there is really no way that you can consider natural mineral water H20 healthy, but what about other brands? Well, Perrier has been the industry leader for many years. Their company website makes no health claims at all. They only suggest Perrier as a "sparkling alternative" to an alcoholic beverage.

A few years back, all of the Perrier in America was recalled due to benzene contamination. Benzene is a toxic chemical that causes vomiting, irritation of the stomach lining, dizziness, sleepiness, convulsions and death. The level found was 15 times higher than what the EPA has deemed "safe." Knowing this, it is hard to consider any bottled mineral water healthy.

The FDA has found that several companies are simply packaging tap water! So, depending on where you live, it's quite possible that the spring fresh mountain water you're buying could be coming from the same municipal source that you're tap water is coming from. Ouch!

So what's the best choice? Forget the bottle water. Their containers are bad for the environment on many levels, anyway.

Take control to assure the water you're drinking is pure and healthy. Buy a home filtration system that balances mineral content and pH level while removing harmful chemical contaminants like benzene.

In order to consider mineral water healthy , only a trace amount of minerals should be present. Just enough to give it a fresh taste. Hey, and if you need water to go – bottle your own, saving you money and saving the environment.

Renewed Fencing Attacks Classified

Renewed attacks in fencing provide a way to maintain pressure on an opponent, pick up distance on the strip, exploit errors in the opponent’s game, and counterattack his or her responses after a parry. There are three such classification of renewed attacks, each of which has specific tactical attributes. The three actions, remise, redouble, and reprise, are often confused. However, the definitions used below are consistent with the definitions in the rules of fencing as used for at least the last 50 years.

The Remise. A remise is a renewal of the attack in the same line as the original attack with a new thrust or cut. A remise is an intentional new action, not simply a continuation of the original movement after it has been displaced by the parry. An immediate remise may seize the right of way if the opponent delays the riposte (becoming a stop thrust or cut against the riposte) or it may actually stop a riposte that is incorrectly executed. The remise is also an effective option if the opponent’s riposte is routinely inaccurate.

The Redouble. A redouble is a renewal of the attack in a new line with a new thrust or cut. Again the redouble is an intentional new action, although in saber it may be possible to execute a remise cut in a way that it appears to be one smooth attacking action as opposed to a miss and a new action (a cut to the outside of the arm which misses may be converted into a disengage cut to the underside of the arm this way). Redoubles are, I suspect, mostly by disengage, although there is no theoretical reason that a redouble by coupe could not be made. This is a useful option against the opponent who holds or pushes a parry in the closed line.

The Reprise. A reprise is a renewal of an attack after a return to guard when the opponent has not riposted. The footwork may be either a lunge followed by a recovery backward to guard and a second lunge or a lunge followed by a forward recovery and a second lunge. The speed of modern footwork is such that neither of these actions is likely to succeed if done mechanically as individual steps unless you have a solid speed advantage over the opponent.

However, the rearward recovery reprise can be accelerated if the fencer identifies early in the recovery that the opponent is not riposting. At this point the recovery of the front foot hits with the heel and immediately lunges again without planting the full foot. The forward reprise can be also be accelerated with a slide. As the heel of the lunging foot lands the rear foot starts to slide forward, completing the forward recovery as the front foot comes down flat. From this position, a new lunge is immediately launched. This gains distance, accelerates the reprise, increases the pressure on the opponent, and may arrive on target in mid-step.

If your opponents consistently hold a parry and delay the riposte, make errors in the execution of the riposte, or miss with the riposte, a renewed attack offers an effective tool for capitalizing on their errors.

Fencing Training Goals and Periodization

The fencing season in most US Fencing Divisions poses significant problems in the periodization of training for competitive fencers. Fencing is now a year-round sport, with competitions in all months, and in some cases opportunities for fencers to fence in a meet within driving distance every weekend. In this environment, planning a periodized training program requires close agreement between the goals of the individual fencer, the desire to win, and the overall structure of a club or salle training program.

Classic periodization creates four levels of training cycles:

  1. Super macrocycles – multi-year cycles to prepare for events that happen less frequently than a year; the Olympic quadrennium is an example.
  2. Macrocycles – a single training cycle that covers a year (in some cases two macrocycles may be appropriate).
  3. Mesocycles – a number of training cycles, as many as 6, within a macrocycle.
  4. Microcycles – the weekly training cycle.

The structure of training cycles is logically tied to the key competitive events in a fencing year. What those key competitive events are depends on the level and goals of the fencer. For an elite athlete working to make a national team, each of the events in the selection process is a key event. In this athlete’s program the typical Division A2 event is inconsequential, and is only valuable to the degree that it serves as training event. The real events vary with weapon and age group, but include North American Cup circuit events, Summer Nationals, and selected World Cup and Grand Prix events. For a senior foil fencer this is a minimum of seven events that award points for the national points list, culminating in the World Championships, the event in which the fencer should have the strongest performance. For the handful of very best elite fencers, this is a single macrocycle, with individual mesocycles for each targeted event.

For most fencers, however, just qualifying for the Junior Olympics or the Summer Nationals is a difficult task, much less succeeding in the event. For a cadet fencer this might be two macrocycles with the Junior Olympics as one and the Summer Nationals as the second. But these macrocycles each require performance in a qualifying event that is maximal for the average fencer, driving at least two mesocycles. The challenge is to identify, from the wide range of available tournaments, events within the macrocycle that will serve as important preparations for both the qualifiers and the national events, and that can serve as targets in mesocycles.

This is further complicated by the need to achieve the appropriate classification to qualify for the desired event. For example, I coached a Canadian fencer resident in the United States whose goal was to be able to fence in a Division 1 event. She earned her C classification in a Division 3 event, but did so too late to be able to enter a Division 1 cup circuit tournament (a C being the minimum classification for entry) before she returned to Canada.

What does this mean for the coach who uses periodized training? First, the coach and the fencer must have well understood and mutually agreed upon goals, and those goals must be long-term, strategic goals, supported by seasonal goals. The goals drive the overall design of the training program.

Second, the coach and fencer must pick events that logically contribute to meeting the objectives of the training program. Not every tournament deserves a maximal effort. Some tournaments should be skipped altogether or treated only as training events for the fencer to use to work on specific problems (given that understanding that medals or classifications are not the objective may be difficult for some athletes).

And third, enough time must be allowed between key tournaments for the training process to work. If a fencer trains 5 days a week and fences a weekend competition, it is possible to run a complete microcycle between competitions, including time for rest and recovery. However, if a fencer trains only one or two days a week, it is very difficult to vary the length, intensity, and composition of training sessions to achieve any significant progress. This is true even if one of the many alternate models of periodization is selected: conjugate, concurrent, skill/strength, or multi-pace.

All of this means that both the coach and the fencer must understand their goals and work together to find the best approach to training that meets the competitive goals within the reality of the club environment, the available time, and the fencer’s ability to train. Periodized training is a complex approach to training with a proven record of improving athlete performance. It is also a method that demands that both the coach and the athlete understand and be committed to its application.

Chile – A South Pacific Gay Adventure

When you think of holiday destinations in the South Pacific with beautiful beaches and a warm, clear blue ocean, then Chile is probably not the first destination which comes to mind. However, this long, narrow strip of coastal land wedged between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean—rather like a large snake— known as the Republic of Chile, has some of the most beautiful beaches in South America and the capital city of Santiago is very gay-friendly.

This narrow land mass borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, plus the Drake Passage at the country’s southernmost tip and stretches 2700 miles along the Southwestern coast of South America. It is only 150 miles deep at its widest point and the majestic Andes mountain range creates a natural border separating it from neighboring Argentina and Bolivia. But the diversity of Chile from the northern arid land of the forbidding Atacama Desert to the central expansive river valley encompassing vineyards and farmland plus the lush Lake District and in the South the archipelago maze of Patagonia, makes this a truly spectacular adventure vacation land. With more than fifty active volcano peaks, primeval forests and enchanting lakes, a temperate year-round climate, Chile is rapidly becoming the new eco-adventure destination of choice in South America.

Most visitors to Chile arrive in Santiago, the capital city, and from here it is easy to head off into the different regions for unique holiday experiences. Also, in Santiago and nearby Vina del Mar or Valparaiso you will also find the most extensive gay and gay-friendly highlights of this diverse country.

During the past decade homophobia has all but vanished in Chile and same-sex relations have been legal since 1998. The age of consent is eighteen but sexual relations must be conducted in privacy in order not to be considered immoral or indecent behavior. Currently the Congress of Chile is considering a law allowing civil unions between same-sex couples and several notable media celebrities have come out and declared their support for gay rights. This has led to an increase in the number of gay businesses especially in Santiago.

The urban renewal of Santiago is obvious as magnificent new office towers rise above beautiful centuries old estates and Spanish colonial architecture. The CTC Telecommunications Tower is literally the world’s largest cell phone and dominates the Santiago skyline contrasting the nearby Bellavista neighbourhood with narrow streets, artsy boutiques of the city’s bohemian quarter. This is a very clean, safe city and affords many enjoyable walks in the different tourist and residential neighbourhoods or expansive public parks.

Any visit to Santiago should commence by riding the funicular to see the Statue of the Virgin atop the hill of Cerro San Cristobal and observe the city below. Many of the gay discos and bars are located in the Barrio Bellavista at the foot of Cerro San Cristobal. The nearest Metro station is Baquedano in Plaza Italia from where you cross Avenue Providencia then cross the bridge over the Rio Mapocho and you are in the Barrio. Local restaurants, colorful cafes, bars and night clubs can all be found here and it is one of the most fun communities in Santiago for both straight and gay visitors alike—it’s no gay ghetto, but rather a truly integrated district. The other concentration of gay bars can be found in the downtown area a short walk from the beautiful park Cerro Santa Lucia and close to the pedestrian shopping streets. Recommended by some local residents for neighborhood bar atmosphere are the Bar Willy and Holandesa plus for late night clubbing the Bokhara, Bunker and Fausto are worthy of visits. The clubs don’t usually get going until about 1:30AM and then the party can last until dawn.

Whether you start your day early for exploring or sleep until noon, the city of Santiago has much to offer for sightseeing and entertainment. The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino is Santiago’s finest museum, with a beautifully presented collection of pre-Hispanic art assembled from the whole South American continent. Highlights include elaborate Meso-American incense burners, Andean textiles dating back as far as 3,000 years, and Maya carvings—not to be missed for any reason. Or you can try a fresh-as-it-comes seafood lunch at the stately Mercado Central, surrounded by market stalls packed with glistening sea bass and salmon, buckets of salt-crusted oysters, mussels or clams. La Chascona is the former house of Pablo Neruda—Chile ‘s Nobel Prize-winning poet—which is packed to the rafters with bizarre and beautiful objects, from Victorian dolls and African carvings to music boxes and paperweights. Preserved as a museum, it makes for a fascinating visit. Without a doubt the best place to hunt for souvenirs is the lively Los Dominicos market, where you’ll find a huge range of beautiful handicrafts as well as antiques, books, fossils, a restaurant, and live music with dancing on weekends. Plus the many Spanish palaces, castles and historic buildings are a photographer’s dream come true.

After a few days in the capital city it is well worth while venturing to the Pacific Coast to enjoy the ocean and more of a resort type holiday. A short fifteen dollar, two and a half hour motor coach ride will take you to the old port city of Valparaiso. This will feel like stepping back in time to enjoy the old world charm of a real Chilean fishing and shipping port. The historic buildings and the open-air market where the locals meet remains unchanged from centuries past. The local restaurants and bars will serve authentic local dishes to delight any discerning palte. The papa fritas—fried potatoes— are a Chilean specialty, particularly in a dish called Chorillana where the potatoes are combined with eggs, onions, beef and sausage. Just remember that the ketchup comes in a green container and the chili sauce in a red container! Here in Valparaiso you will also find the very modern Congress building which is the seat of the country’s government. Strolling around town is a very relaxing and fascinating way to spend a day or two.

And by now it’s probably time to stretch out on the beach and relax. A short fifteen minute local bus ride from Valparaiso is the resort town of Vina del Mar—Vineyard By The Sea— where luxury hotels, apartment rentals and bed and breakfasts skirt the Pacific Ocean promenade. One of the largest gaming palaces in Chile—the Municipal Casino— is located here and it includes a five star hotel, discotheque and gourmet restaurant.

Also known as the Garden City with numerous parks and over 2.5 miles of sandy beaches Vina del Mar is a popular resort town where visitors enjoy warm summers, beautiful fall colors, exquisite spring flowers and spectacular year-round sunsets. Three beaches are frequented by local GLBT residents and tourists—Caleta Abarca, Los Marineros, and Las Salinas—the latter being popular with the local marines! And if you’re wondering about the “Vina” in the name, then you are in for a treat when you sample the local vintages for which Chile is becoming famous. This seaside resort is perfect for unwinding and experiencing a real Chilean holiday.

Accommodations throughout Chile range from back-packer’s retreats to modern luxury hotels and everything in between—all at very reasonable prices. However, exclusively gay accommodations are hard to find. Dog Training – Top 10 Dog Games That Will Wear Him Out

I can just see you sitting there scratching your head and wondering why I refer to dog training when writing about dog games. Well, this is because I am a dog. I know from personal experience that all dog games are really training and all dog training is really games. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Valentino Spock Bone. You can call me Valentino for short. My human has quite a sense of humor. But that is another story. Oh, by the way, the title about games that will wear HIM out is a pun intended because dog games will wear out a dog or a human! I guess it depends on who is reading this article!

Playing dog games is one of the most effective and fun ways to give your dog the physical and mental exercise he needs. It also provides a personal way to get to know your best friend in a casual environment. Unlike standard training routines that I will discuss in future articles, this article is just for fun, but in a healthy training-type way.

The thing is that I get bored with just plain old “fetch” or “Valentino come”, even if it is for a treat. I’m very intelligent and so is your canine pal. He wants variety and lots of excitement. Even experts agree that in order to keep your pooch happy, you need to provide exercise and a challenge along with positive reinforcement…my favorite is those little treats that are soft and look like a tiny t-bone and they just tingle in my mouth and make me want to do cartwheels and run around the block…Sorry, I sometimes get carried away by the thought of another treat.

So here goes:

1) Fetch: Try to think out of the kennel and get creative with a ball or favorite toy instead of a stick. My human does not let me chew on sticks but she does let me chew my toys, so I get to use safe items to play fetch. I know this sounds funny, but not all dogs are created equal. Some dogs just don’t like to play fetch! If not, keep reading because there are plenty of other dog games to play. Oh, I am sure that your dog already knows how to bring it back to you and to “drop it” before you start playing fetch.

2) Backyard Bobbing: We do this in the summertime using a small inexpensive wading pool that fits me to a T! All you have to do is fill it with a few inches of water and place a rubber toy in the middle and watch your dog have lots of fun getting into and out of the pool! If your dog gets too excited doing this be sure to let him calm down by getting his attention on something else or by emptying the pool and putting it out of his reach.

3) Mystery Tour:You can create a maze of boxes and other simple shapes in the back yard and use those treats to get your dog to run through the maze with you at his side, or not. He may want to go by himself while you watch. This is really great for helping your dog learn to move with fluid motion and it helps him to be OK with new and different shapes and situations, giving him confidence and mental balance. You can also purchase equipment for this, but simple is usually best unless you are training for obstacle course trials. Sometimes I just get all goofy and just jump ON the boxes in the maze…it drives my human crazy!

4) Hide and Seek: I love using my awesome natural ability to follow scents and with just the right amount of encouragement your dog will be an expert at finding you or whatever toys you hide in this game. If you and your dog are new at this, give him the stay command then hide yourself or a toy where your dog can see you, then give a come and get it or find me command. When he finds whatever you hid give him a nice treat and praise him like silly. After you get used to this, your pup will be able to find you or the hidden object by scent alone, even if he cannot see you. Start simple then get more complicated by adding more distance. Did you know that tracking dogs will sometimes track a scent by walking several feet away from where the trail is? The nose knows.

This is a great way to spend time indoors on those cold winter days or just rainy days when inclement weather prevents you from taking your best friend outside. Please be sure to keep those treats close by. And, be sure to give the “stay” command before you hide, otherwise, he’ll be right behind you!

5) Swimming: I know this may be hard to believe, but some dogs do not like water! If your dog thinks that water is evil, do not force him. But if he does love water, please take him now! Swimming is great exercise and you can have lots of fun watching him do the dog paddle! Remember to take lots of towels and dry him off afterwards to keep him from catching a chill.

6) Frisbee: Ah, catch. Catching a flying object is almost too exciting for me to talk about. I’m young, though and this is easy for me. If your dog is older this may not be so good for him as it is very physical and requires lots of movement and jumping and sliding all over the place. You will want to throw the Frisbee a short distance to start and then you can throw it farther and farther when fido gets the hang of it. This reinforces the “fetch” instructions of going after something, bringing it back and then “dropping” it so you can repeat the process for him. Did you know that there are actually Frisbee competitions? It just doesn’t get better than this.

7) What’s That?: I just can not get enough of this one. My human sits in her easy chair and out of nowhere, she takes a rapid breath IN and says in her most inquisitive voice, “What’s That”? My ears perk up and I’m off and running in the direction of wherever she points her finger! OK. I know there’s nothing there but she gets me every time. This is good for getting my attention and it helps me focus on whatever my human wants me to focus on. Then when the game is finished, she uses other commands to end the game; come, sit and stay. Oh, and sometimes, she stands up or moves around when she does this. So many ways, so little time.

8) Saddle Bag: This one is really cool. This is when I get to carry water and snacks for my human. If you don’t already have a saddle bag you can make one with a nice piece of fabric that fits around your dog’s belly and chest…and it has to have a pocket on each side to carry the water and snacks…my human uses it to carry my treats, too. This is so cool because I just look cute and gets lots of praise and treats for just walking! And, of course, it’s good for me to walk quietly by her side for exercise. If your dog has been used to wearing doggie sweaters and coats, he will ease right into this. If not, just give him time to adjust to the feel of doggie clothes before you expect him to be comfortable with it. My human started by dressing me in sweaters because I was such a wiggle worm. After I calmed down and didn’t mind the clothes, she gave me a saddlebag to wear. She started by putting small items in the pockets and then she added her water bottles after I was OK with the extra weight.

9) Horse and Buggy: No, I don’t mind being thought of as a horse pulling a buggy. People also call this carting or pulling in some circles. This requires practice to get the hang of it, but once you do it can be a lot of fun, great exercise and it helps build stamina. My human uses a little red wagon. She removed the handle and added a fabric hitch that fits over my back and attaches to two round dowel rods that she got at a craft store. You could also use a sled or cart. I have to walk steadily and pull the wagon that usually contains a child or just stuff like groceries or debris in the yard that she wants to get rid of. It makes me feel like I’m part of whatever my human is doing at the time.

10) Leave It: I really love this because I don’t have to do anything and I always get a treat! At first you just hold a favorite treat in your hand and say “leave it” and let your dog sniff at it but don’t give it to him…the minute he stops trying to get it, you give it to him and praise the heck out of him. I’m guessing that your dog will get it by day two. After he really gets it, you can use it for almost anything such as leave the cat alone, leave the rug alone and leave anything alone that has his undivided attention.

11)Grand Ole Opry: I have one more, well, actually two but since I can’t really count. My human gets up and 1)starts twirling around and 2)starts singing at the top of her lungs! All I want to do is be part of this madness so I stand up on my two hind legs and I howl! It is truly a sight to behold and afterwards I feel exhausted! So this is probably good for those days when your dog hasn’t had as much exercise as he should have. A little goes a long way with this one. If you are not able to twirl, then just sway a little side-to-side is sufficient. And, if you can not sing, all the better ’cause it will drive your puppy into howling heaven.

Dog games are so good for your dog and with a little time will have both of you in sync with what makes your best friend happy and healthy.

How To Fix a Frost – Free Refrigerator That Is Leaking Water

A common problem with some frost free refrigerators is water leakage out of the refrigerator. This mystery problem leads to puddles in the bottom of the refrigerator and on the floor in front of it. Seems like a pretty strange thing for a frost free refrigerator to experience. What could be causing it, and what to do about it?

That kind of fridge periodically goes through a defrost cycle. The blower goes off, the compressor goes off, and a heater comes on in the freezer. This melts the frost off the evaporator coil and the resulting water runs down a drain that is located in the back of the freezer under the freezer covers.

Down the drain…

Except that if the freezer has not been kept scrupulously clean, stuff can get under the covers and block that drain. In this case, the water backs up and freezes. Then it builds up. Eventually, the ice in the freezer under the cover has reached the point where, when the defrost cycle comes on, the water runs out into the refrigerator portion.

Mid sized Kelvinators and White-Westinghouse refrigerators are particularly susceptible to this problem, although I have seen it in other brands.

To solve the problem you have to take the covers off inside the freezer. Chip out the ice, and clean out the drain.

Some people have had success with wrapping a copper wire around the heater in the freezer and directing the end of that wire down the drain. The idea is that the copper wire will divert extra heat to the drain opening during the defrost cycle, and this will help prevent the formation of the ice plug which ultimately causes the backup. Also, the wire sticking down into the drain acts to keep objects that have migrated through the vents (thing like onion skins, or small pieces of paper or plastic) from the freezer from completely covering the drain and blocking it.

Coaching Baseball Pitchers – Absolute Best Drill You Can Use to Improve Control and Build Confidence

Learning to control every pitch and to be able to “hit spots” is a required skill for pitching success at all levels including Little League, High School, College and MLB baseball. There is no better baseball pitching drill for improving a pitcher’s control and building a pitcher’s confidence than the “Japanese Pitching Drill”. I do not know where the name came from. I saw this drill used back in the late 80’s at a college summer baseball camp and the coaches called it the “Japanese Drill”. When I asked the coaches why they called the drill, the “Japanese Drill”, they respond that the drill was called that because it was originated in the country of Japan. I know that if you use this drill regularly, it will definitely build pitching control and confidence.

The drill involves a pitcher throwing strikes at varying distances as shown in the diagram below. The catcher is “c” and each spot the pitcher throws from is marked with an “x”. The distances shown are for high school and college pitchers. You can reduce the distances between spots and reduce the number of spots for younger players.

The plate and catcher are set at a stationary location and they are never moved. The pitcher will move forward or back from “spot to spot” after throwing a set number of pitches at each location. Normally the spots are marked with cones or plastic round markers. The pitcher should begin throwing at a distance about 1/4 of his normal pitching distance. At the close spots the pitcher will throw at 1/2 speed. You should have 6-8 distance markers with the first being at the starting point and the longest being 1 and ½ times the normal pitching distance. The markers should be in a straight line with the plate. The object of the drill is to develop control by throwing pitches from spots will gradually moving away from and toward the plate. The pitcher is required to throw 3 strikes from each marker before moving to the next. The catcher serves as the umpire.

It is good to have the pitcher throw from each spot going backward and then throw from each spot coming forward. If your pitchers are young, you may want to make then throw just 1 or 2 strikes from each spot. Pitchers gain great confidence when they see that they can throw strikes from a distance farther than their regular pitching distance. They learn to concentrate on the target and throw to the mitt. You will be very pleased from the results you see in the control of your pitchers. Another variation of this drill is to have 2 pitchers competing against each other in a timed drill. The winner is the pitcher that starts at the front, goes to the back, and returns to the front, first. The pitchers must throw 3 strikes at each spot before advancing to the next spot. This is a great drill to teach pitchers to throw strikes under pressure. When more than one pitcher and catcher are involved, make sure that your catchers are far enough apart to prevent a wild pitch from hitting another catcher. It is also a good idea for catchers to wear full gear when participating in this drill.

When two pitchers compete in this drill they learn to work fast, concentrate, and execute a perfect pitch. Make sure your pitchers are in condition for this drill. They will find that throwing strikes from longer distance requires great mechanics and builds arm strength. Make sure your players stretch and warm-up first.
