Indian Carpet Industry and Its SWOT Analysis

Carpet Industry is one among the industries prevailing in India since centuries. Indian Carpet Industry has always been a crucial part of Indian export industry. Moguls brought and introduced carpet weaving in India which survived and flourished greatly. Over the period, ancient weavers has transformed into modern artist who imbibe the magical colours to the Indian carpets. These artists bring aesthetic touch to the carpets by doing magic with colours and provide carpets an unusual beauty and elegance. The study revealed that the total carpet exported last year was worth Rs 2600 crores whereas the size of the domestic market was condensed to about Rs 200 crores. Carpet holds a grace and recognition from over centuries. Earlier, only a few centers in India were involved in carpet weaving but slowly, various clusters have risen in northern part of India for the same purpose. Each center has its own competitive advantage. These centers employ nearly millions of people all across the country. Mojor belts of carpets include Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Agra belt in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur, Bikaner in Rajasthan, Panipat belt in Haryana and Kashmir belt.

Carpets are broadly classified into two categories, traditional and modern. Otherwise, Indian manufacturers make carpets in various types, these are;

o Chainstich Rugs

o Tufted Woolen Carpets

o Hand-knotted Woolen Carpets

o GABBE Woolen Carpets

o Pure Silk Carpets

o Handmade Woolen Dhurries

o Staple or Synthetic Carpets

Each type has its own individuality in terms of design, look and the wool used in its manufacturing. The variety in carpets caters to various needs of customers.

The distinct variety added to the carpets is inclusion of silk and cotton which are innovatively mixing with the wool to give an attractive look to the carpets. Silk carpets are considered high quality pieces and are comparatively high in price. Indian carpets are fundamentally following the old popular patterns such as floral, rhomboids, animal patterns and arabesques in its designs. These traditional Oriental styles are preferred even today. However, Indian carpet industry seems to be highly influenced by western patterns and designs which are giving a competitive edge to Indian traditional carpets, such as Chinese patterns and Persian designs.

Swot Analysis of Carpet Industry

Indian Carpet Industry is a unique industry which is highly unorganized but lacks proper channels. Somehow, it has managed to perform impressively in the past years. The industry has made significant contribution in Indian exports till 1990s. What was there behind the industry that drives the export? SWOT analysis brings forth the value drivers and tentative blocks this industry has experienced and experiencing even today;

Strengths- Over the years, carpet industry has flourished in India due to availability of artistic skills, cheap labour and low cost raw material, innovations in selling carpets and flexibility in manufacturing all kinds of carpets.

Weaknesses- The industry’s greatest weakness is its highly being unorganized. The carpet exporters and manufacturers lack marketing channels. Indian suppliers suffer due to poor infrastructure and internal competition, and lack professional approach and Intellectual Property Rights.

Opportunities- Home furnishing market is moving towards Carpet industry, which results in evolution of new carpet designs. It is used as a marketing tool, and gives opportunity to provide stocking and warehousing services to various players in the market.

Threats- Industry is suffering a lot due to unhealthy competition exiting within it. If not handled properly, current rebound in the industry may not be sustainable. Social evil such as Child labor has strong bonding with the industry. Hence, the industry invites risk of possible backlash on itself.

Carpet Industry in India has experienced a major change in recent years. The industry is moving towards the emergence of new market and old existing market is saturated and lost its identity. Low-end carpets manufactured in modern designs like hand-tufted carpets are highly preferred by new customer base. Chinese industry is emerging as the biggest threat to Indian carpet industry, in terms of pricing and volumes. However, innovative products range with lower volume could be a success mantra for Indian Carpet Industry. Inefficient coordination and ill management are what exist predominantly in the industry. Apart from it, industry needs to consolidate on the activities such as quality standards, cost reduction, better development of products and their on-time delivery to drive its growth.

Cold Relief for Infants and Adults Through Home Remedies

As common as it may be, it is a big nuisance when you get it. Yes, I am talking about the common cold. Cold is usually caused by virus and hence antibiotics do not quite work and give relief. However, some of the infections may turn bacterial and that is when antibiotics come in handy. Unfortunately, the medicines do not just fight and destroy the bad bacteria but also kill good ones. Hence it is important to have probiotics after a course of antibiotics so good bacteria can be replenished. As it takes roughly about a week struggle before you can get near medication, it is quite important to get some relief. This is all the more important for infants and toddlers as they cannot blow their nose and get the phlegm out. I have listed below some of the home remedies that is commonly used in the place where I come from and in my household as well.

1. Kumkum is made with turmeric and is commonly used by Hindus as it has religious significance. It has wonderful decongesting properties. Get a good quality kumkum and add few drops of water to a teaspoon of kumkum. Add two pinches of saffron strands and heat it. Allow it to cool and once warm enough to touch, apply on baby/child’s forehead and nose.

2. Dry ginger powder has a similar application as well. Make a paste of a teaspoon of ginger powder and few drops water. Heat it and cool until it is warm enough to touch. Apply on forehead, nose and behind ears. This is more suitable for much older children and adults.

3. If you have no access to kumkum, try the same with turmeric powder.

4. Turmeric milk works great for adults and children. Warm some milk and add turmeric powder. Drink this milk, especially before bed.

5. Ingest garlic milk. As gross as it may sound, it is quite effective and can be given to infants and toddlers as well as adults. If giving to infants, make sure your child is not allergic to milk or garlic. Crush two cloves of garlic and add to few tablespoons of milk. Allow this to boil well. Once it is cool enough to consume, drink the milk.

6. One of the home remedies I have found quite effective is a mixture of betel leaves, ajwain seeds (called omam in tamil) and garlic. Take a couple of betel leaves, crush couple of cloves of garlic and add few pinches of crushed ajwain seeds. Add few tablespoons of water and boil well. Give just the liquid to the child. Betel is called ‘vetrilai’ in tamil and a partciular type called ‘kamara vetrilai’ is even better for this treatment.

7. Vaporub application. I was told and also read that doctors do not believe vaporubs are helpful at all. However, as a parent you would do anything to help your child sleep for atleast a few hours and clearing their nose is important for this. I found that my child is not happy to apply the vaporub. I apply vaporub on the chest and back when giving my kid a bath and dab some warm water on these areas. This releases the vapurs and clears the nose.

8. Keep the room humid. While commercial humidifiers are available we have noticed that when suffering from cold, a particularly high amount of humidity helps provide some relief and sleep. We keep the kitchen steamer and keep re-filling it. The humidity relieves congestion. Keeping the room at slightly elevated temperature helps retain humidity. One must however always ensure the child is not overheated.

9. Although I have never tried, I have heard that heating little coconut oil and adding camphor to it and applying to the chest helps relieve congestion

10. Applying eucalyptus oil, especially in the big toes is said to stimulate the sinuses and relieve congestion. The challenge is to make the infant or child offer their leg for this toe massage!

11. For adults, have several doses of ginger tea. You could either add half a teaspoon of dry ginger powder to a glass of hot water or crush some pieces of ginger, add it to water and boil well until the water begins to change colour.

12. Inhaling fumes from turmeric also helps relieve congestion especially in adults. I take a piece of dried turmeric and burn one end. The smoke provides great relief.

13. Have what we call ‘rasam’ or soup. It is basically essence of few things. Add a teaspoon each – crushed cumin seeds, crushed coriander seeds and some black pepper powder to water and boil well. Add some tamarind puree or paste and some salt and drink like a soup. If you do not have or like tamarind, have the liquid like a decoction.

Have in mind that while adults manage to blow their nose or spit the phlegm, babies and infants cannot do so. Typically they either vomit the phlegm or pass it in their motion and hence have some loose stools. Having said that, it is always worth checking with your doctor if you are concerned.

Suffering From Adhesive Capsulitis or Frozen Shoulder? An Introduction to Available Treatments

Frozen shoulder, sometimes referred to as adhesive capsulitis, is a painful condition in which movement of the shoulder and arm can be severely limited. It occurs when some of the joint capsule attaches to itself, limiting movement. Since this area has a plentiful supply of nerves, any movement that pulls on the attached portion can be extremely painful.

This condition can be referred to as primary or secondary. In the primary form, there is no discernible cause for the condition. The second form is generally caused by injury or damage to the area. This may include arthritis, rotator cuff injuries or surgery, among other things.

Frozen shoulder generally follows three phrases. The first stage is the freezing one. This lasts between two to six months. During this stage, there will be a gradual reduction in the ability to move with a corresponding increase in pain.

The second stage is frozen. Around four to twelve months after the initial onset, motion will become even more restricted. In some cases, the level of pain may decrease during this period. The final stage is thawing. During this stage, the joint has begun recovery and motion will begin to return slowly. Pain will also begin to decrease. Depending on the severity of the frozen shoulder, thawing can last anywhere from a few months to several years.

Treatment of adhesive capsulitis may involve massage, physical therapy, exercise and stretching, anti-inflammatory medications, moist heat or cortisone injections. In rare cases which do not respond to traditional treatment, surgery may be required. It is important that treatment be done under the supervision of a physician to prevent further injury to the shoulder.

Massage treatment for frozen shoulder may involve a combination of techniques. Deep tissue massage uses pressure to the muscles around the shoulder to encourage the release of the adhesion’s that cause the pain. Shiatsu uses pressure on the acupressure points along the meridians to release any energy blockages.

Trigger point therapy is sometimes very effective. This technique focuses on specific points within muscles. When pressure is applied to the proper points, it can help relieve muscle spasms. Remedial and even Swedish massage may also be helpful. Long strokes and gentle kneading of muscles are utilized to reduce tension and stress, which can exacerbate the shoulder condition.

Physical therapy is used to help regain movement of the frozen shoulder. The therapist will first use pain reducing methods such as heat wraps, ointments and creams to ease pain. In some cases, therapy may include massage to help loosen the area and improve circulation of the area. The physical therapist may perform stretching exercises to encourage ‘thawing’ of the frozen shoulder. Other exercises may be used to strengthen the area as well. Both weight-wearing and non weight-bearing exercises are typically utilized.

In most cases, patients are sent home with a program of home exercises and stretches to do in addition to the work done in physical therapy. These exercises should be done several times a day or as recommended by the therapist or physician. Failure to comply with a home exercise plan will reduce the rate of recovery.

Anti-inflammatory medications are commonly prescribed. These may include acetaminophen (Tylenol) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These have a dual purpose. First, they ease inflammation which can be impeding movement. Second, they relieve the pain that comes with this condition.

Moist heat can be used for both relief of pain and loosening of the shoulder joint. A warm, damp cloth is applied to the shoulder for short periods of time. A warm shower or a soak in the bath can also be beneficial.

Cortisone injections are sometimes used. It is not fully understood how beneficial these injections are for frozen shoulder. However, they do reduce inflammation in the shoulder, which can lead to a reduction in pain levels as well. Cortisone injections are sometimes combined with physical therapy as they can help patients achieve more stretching.

In rare cases, forced manipulation or surgery may be indicated. As there is a greater chance of introducing more injury to the shoulder capsule and joint, these treatments are normally only considered in very severe cases for which the conventional treatment have had minimal effect.

In forced manipulation, anesthesia is used. Usually, the patient is sedated, but in some cases the physician may opt to only anesthetize the shoulder. While under anesthesia, the arm is forced up in order to break the adhesions at the shoulder joint. This can cause the patient a great deal of pain once the anesthetic wears off. However, it can bring about a dramatic improvement in the joint’s mobility.

In surgery, the patient is sedated with anesthesia. An arthroscope is inserted into the shoulder joint after a minor incision is made. The light and camera inside the device allow the physician to determine where the adhesion causing the frozen shoulder is located. Then, small tools inside the device are used to cut through the adhesions.

This procedure is referred to as arthroscopic capsular release. Physical therapy is normally offered when the adhesive capsulitis is released in order to prevent a recurrence. If the patient fails to do physical therapy following the procedure, there is a good chance the shoulder will refreeze.

Depending on the severity of the frozen shoulder and the individual patient, it may be necessary to use multiple treatments to find relief. In most cases, frozen shoulder sufferers can regain most (if not all) range of motion of the shoulder through combination of physical therapy, stretching and massage. However, there may a slight decrease in shoulder mobility even after healing occurs. This is generally mild and typically only noticed on close examination, but may last several years.

Rear View Mirror Fell Off – Rear View Mirror Tips & Mistakes

Installing a rear view mirror that has fallen is a simple job. It’s important to know how a common mistake could break the windshield if this simple task is done improperly. It’s very easy to glue the rear view mirror button upside down. I worked with someone years ago, that made this mistake. When he tried to remove the metal button from the windshield so it could be glued back on correctly the windshield was cracked! This simple job cost the company we worked for at the time, $350 to have a replacement windshield installed. Read on to find out what type of adhesive is recommended, the step by step instructions on how to secure the fallen mirror and what to do if the button was mistakenly glued on upside down.

Rear View Mirror Installation Tips (50 to 75 Degrees Fahrenheit)

  1. Use a rear view mirror kit made specifically for bonding the rear view mirror back on (like Permatex Rearview Mirror Adhesive).
  2. Separate the button from the rear view mirror. It is either held together with a screw or a spring retainer; the type without a screw will be pryed off with a screwdriver.
  3. Mark the position where the mirror will be re-glued. Use a crayon or piece of paper tape on the outside of the windshield.
  4. Scrape the old glue off of the inside of the windshield and the button. Clean the windshield and button with rubbing alcohol.
  5. The activator vial has a separator built into it, squeeze the vial until the inner portion breaks, the two parts will mix and is ready for application.
  6. Do not touch the surfaces with your fingers, apply the activator generously to the windshield and button. Allow to dry for 2 minutes.
  7. Open the adhesive and apply ONE drop to the center of the button (apply to the correct side of the button). One drop only, more isn’t better.
  8. Immediately hold the button in place on the windshield being sure that the it is right side up. Hold firmly for 60 seconds.
  9. Wait for fifteen minutes before mounting the mirror to the button.

If the button was glued on upside down or the wrong side to the glass, DO NOT try to remove it. Prying or heating to remove an incorrectly installed button may result in cracking the windshield! It’s best if this happens to purchase a new button and bond it on top of the incorrectly installed button.

Plumber – Kitchen Plumbing And Repairs

One of the most versatile trades of all times is the plumbing trade. From laying out the piping of a structure to installing the hot water system of a building, a plumber can choose to specialize in a wide variety of tasks. Gas systems, clean water supply systems, drainage systems, kitchen plumbing systems to name but a few are all tasks that are carried out by plumbers. There are various aspects of kitchen plumbing systems which must be there for the kitchen to function in an efficient way.

What Kitchen Plumbing Entails

The kitchen is fitted with pipes which supply clean water and other pipes that get rid of waste water. There may also be pipes which supply gas to the kitchen, and the gas valve is usually located either on the floor or the wall. The hot and cold water valves are normally located under the sink. From the valves, supply tubes are connected to the faucet.

A saddle valve may be attached to the cold water valve in order to provide additional water connections which supply water to appliances such as a water filter. The additional connections may be made from plastic tubes or copper. The gas valve is normally found under the appliances which use gas, and you can shut it off when the gas is not in use for safety purposes.

Repairing Sink Pipes

The pipes which are found under the kitchen sink are normally curved and are known as P-traps. Compression fittings connect these curved pipes to the drainage pipe of the sink, and you can sometimes unscrew these fittings without the help of any tool. When replacing kitchen sink pipes, the plumber has to carefully take the measurements of the pipes so that the new pipes can be cut just right.

The water valves are turned off in order to cut off the supply of water to the sink when the repair work is ongoing. The P-trap connections are unscrewed from the tailpieces of the sink by hand or by use of pliers. The traps are removed from the connections and the drain tailpieces are also removed. New tailpieces are screwed in and new pipes are cut and fixed into place with compression fittings by hand.

Other Repairs Required In The Kitchen

There are many valves which are found in the kitchen and they are prone to leaking. Taps which are used in the kitchen are also prone to leaking and require repairs once in a while. The dishwasher may fail to work properly if the water supply pipes and the drainage pipes are not working properly. The kitchen drains can get clogged up and may require drain cleaning. The garbage disposal may get clogged up if too much garbage is placed in it and would require repairs.

Maintaining Your Kitchen Plumbing

In order to keep your kitchen plumbing working well for you, there are a few things which you can do. Firstly, you should ensure that you do not pour grease and fatty substances down the kitchen sink. Instead of flowing down the drain, grease and fat get stuck to the insides of the pipe and when it accumulates, the drain gets blocked. You should also not throw leftover foods that are hard to grind in the garbage disposal.

Why Varak is Barred by Vegans, Vegetarians and Jains?

In the world that we live in today, there are activists waiting to defend animal rights in each way possible. Many have taken up the cause of usage of varak (pure silver foil) used to garnish Indian sweets and decorate the idols of Indian deities. However, over many years Jains have condemned it for they believe that animal fat or hide is used to churn out vark/ varakh/ varakh.

What is Varak?

It is a garnishing item, typically made out of pure silver, which is ultra thin, fragile and easily breakable. Hence, it is usually supported with a white butter paper. They are used to adorn the sweets, dates, nuts, fruits, etc. in addition to embellishing religious idols.

Why is Varak non-vegetarian?

‘Beauty without Cruelty’, a Pune-based NGO investigated about why Jains consider varak as non-vegetarian food. According to them, slaughterhouse owners select animals (goat, sheep and cattle) that have softest skin before killing them. Their skins are soaked in infested vats for 12 days to make it completely hairless and peel away the epidermal layer. After which the skin is soaked for 30 minutes in a decoction to soften them and then left to dry. After drying these are cut in to square pieces 19 cm by 15 cm and pot which they are shaped into pouches and stacked into booklets, which has a cover of thick lamb suede. Lean strips of silver are placed inside these pouches before the workers start hitting the booklet with wooden mallets for three hours making sure that the silver inside becomes super thin and fragile- a thickness of less than one micron called ‘999’. This form of varak is then sent to sweet shops. Not only many clueless animals are killed furiously but also there tends to be a possibility that some part of meat is left on the varak.

So one technically, varak is not exactly a non-vegetarian product but it is the process that it has to go through which makes it non-vegetarians. For ideology of vegans, veggies and Jains to not hurt animals for their own consumption and be satisfied with all the fruits, vegetables, herds, trees and grasses that Mother Nature has to offer.

According to statistics suggests that 12,500 animals are killed for one Kg of varak and each year 30,000 Kg of varak is consumed fro sweets only in India.

Jains and Varak

Ironically, Jains, followers of the religion that believes in ahimsa (nonviolence), are the biggest buyers of varak, as they avidly use it to decorate the statue of their deities. Also being one of the richest communities in India, it spends lavishly on extravagant sweets which are garnished by varak. However, there is a small but quickly growing section in this community which makes it a point to tell their sweet supplier to make varak less mithais (sweets in Hindi).

Saving animals

Many vegan and vegetarians have taken up this cause with active enthusiasm to make sure that no more animals are killed for a tiny garnish which completely unimportant for varak is tasteless and has no tang of its own.

If you are animal lover and hooked on to varak, you may want to rethink before consuming it. For non-vegetarianism is no more about avoiding food items that are part of an animal’s anatomy, but it now extends to making sure no animal is hurt in any form to satisfy your younger.

Smoking and Genetics – Is Smoking Hereditary?

You can stop smoking if smoking is inherited in your genes. Research shows that whilst genetic factors do play a part in smoking behaviour, this is only a small part. Environment, or nurture as well as nature, plays a part too.

Studies of a correlation between smoking and genetic factors have come up with three correlations between smokers and their families:

1. The age they start smoking

2. How likely they are to carry on smoking

3. When they stop smoking

Whilst these factors are significant, they are not huge. In other words, you can quit even if everyone in your family is a smoker.

One of the things that are targeted in quit-smoking programs is the beliefs of the smoker. A belief is a very strong psychological incentive, and can be a strong influence on stop-smoking treatment.

So how do you change a belief? The answer is that cannot change a belief per se, what you can change is that an opinion that was once a belief is no longer so.

A belief is an absolute truth, something that we believe to be true based on all the evidence given to us plus the way we have stacked up this evidence in a logical order. Now logic is like building a wall. First you have one brick, then you have another, then another, building brick upon brick till you have a wall. The strength of this wall depends on how good the bricks are. What if there was a brick somewhere near the bottom that was flawed? Remove this brick, and the wall collapses. Take all the good bricks, build again, and you have a much stronger wall in place.

Using methods like EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) with NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), the belief that “I am a smoker because all my family are smokers” can be shown to be merely a flawed opinion. This is replaced by the stronger wall which says “My family are smokers, I choose to render these genes ineffective and become a non-smoker”.

Along with genes leading to flawed opinions, one is exposed to family emotions and family temptations. For instance, if parents were harsh in the treatment of a smoker growing up, who then was encouraged to smoke on every visit to relatives, this of course influences the smoking desire. A person with an unhappy or less educated background is more likely to smoke, and having cigarettes all around this person reinforces the smoking behaviour.

The good news is that using methods like EFT, unhappiness can be lifted out of your system. When there is no longer the need to drug unhappiness, the desire for smoking reduces considerably.

What remains is a simple program that covers the following:

A. Education about the dangers of smoking and the true joys of natural living

B. Options that involve something more exciting than being around smokers

C. Behavioral coaching for situations where one is surrounded by smokers

Whilst this may mean more than one quick session for smoking cessation, a structured program like this is more likely to produce long-lasting results and true freedom for good. All I can say is that if you are an ex-smoker-to-be, you can succeed. It is merely the route to success that changes. True success feels good whatever route you take to it and whatever genes you have inherited.

Finding Places to Rent an Apartment in Chicago With Bad Credit, a Broken Lease Or a Criminal Felony

Chicago is the third largest metropolitan in the United States and as such attracts thousands of people each day. The city is also a formidable financial center making it a magnet for people seeking economic and career opportunities. Chicago has many different apartments which are excellent for any purpose and for any family size. If you are shopping for an apartment rental in Chicago, it is best to be armed with the necessary information required. One of these is to know your credit score because Chicago apartments will conduct credit and rental history checks not to mention criminal background checks as well. So where can one rent an apartment in Chicago if they have a prior broken lease, less-than-adequate credit or a criminal record?

There are many different localities within Chi-town where this is possible. The following areas have different apartment leasing homes that cater to applicants with an unflattering rental history, tainted credit or criminal past:

  • Downtown Chicago
  • Southside
  • Center City
  • Southwest
  • Bridesburg

One challenge that many people who have a poor rental background or less-than-perfect credit is where to locate apartments that are willing to work with them. This is because many second-chance apartments in Chicago do not advertise that they work with people with imperfect credit. This leaves applicants to guess which can be a costly and frustrating exercise indeed.

Techniques of find bad credit apartments in Chicago

One way to find second chance apartments in Chicago is off course the Internet. This can also be tricky because not all websites are straightforward and apartments rental regulations are constantly being revised.

Another option is to contract an apartment locator. Usually if you tell them what the issue is they can look for an apartment for you which can cater for people with previous issues such as broken lease agreements, bad credit or criminal pasts.

Important information to bear in mind

It is essential that you understand that even if the apartments are willing to work with impaired credit and/or an imperfect record as far as renting, they will still request that you fulfill a few requirements:

  • Have a job for at least six months prior
  • Be earning at least 3 times the rental amount
  • Not be convicted of violent crime or crime against minors
  • If felony, it has to be at least 5 years old

Sometimes the apartments will also require a hefty deposit and may hike their rent. But again these requirements vary from apartment to apartment and locality to locality.

Are you looking for apartments in Chicago which will approve you despite a previous broken apartment lease agreement, sub-prime credit or a criminal record?

No More Bloating – Fat Belly to Flat Belly, Quickly, Easily and Painlessly

What is bloating and why does my belly look so fat?

Well generally speaking, bloating is that uncomfortable overstuffed feeling that most of us have experienced at one time or another. Usually after overindulging at the dinner table or maybe after a bout of excessive drinking. However for some people bloating is an every day occurrence that can make meal times a constant battle.

What causes bloating?

There are several factors that contribute to stomach bloating and most of them are food or drink related. If you are a sufferer you need to find out what is your ‘bloat trigger’ in order to help you deal with the problem and treat it properly. The four most common culprits are:

  • Fluid Retention/Water Retention
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Stress
  • Food Intolerance

Fluid Retention/Water Retention

For many women, bloating may be hormone related and the result of a build up of fluid especially in the week prior to menstruation. When an imbalance occurs in the body, excess fluid can build up in spaces between cells. Quite often a bloated abdomen may be accompanied by puffy eyes and swollen ankles.

How to test for water retention

A quick way to test for yourself if you suspect you may be suffering from fluid/water retention is to press your thumb onto your lower leg for a couple of seconds. When you release the pressure gently feel to see if the skin has sprung back or if you have been left with an indentation. If you can feel a dent this may be a sign of fluid retention.

If you suspect you are suffering from fluid retention you should consult your doctor.

Irritable bowel syndrome

This is a common cause of abdominal bloating. Treating IBS and digestive problems can be difficult and treatments should be discussed with your GP. However many home remedies and over the counter treatments are available and well worth trying.

If you suffer from IBS you will more than likely also have additional symptoms such as

  • constipation
  • abdominal bloating
  • diarrhoea

Some of the more common remedies you may be prescribed include anti-spasmodic tablets. As the title suggests these work by acting directly on the smooth muscle in the gut, causing it to relax. This relieves painful muscle spasms of the gut, without affecting it’s normal motility.

Over the counter remedies such as peppermint oil capsules and peppermint tea are also useful for soothing the symptoms. Charcoal products which are available from most health food shops are a popular choice for bloating and excess wind in the lower abdomen. Other popular products containing Simethicone, can be extremely helpful in dispersing excess gas and are available in a variety of forms including strips, soft gels and chewable tablets.

Probiotic drinks and yoghurts may also be helpful by encouraging good bacteria and helping to maintain a healthy gut. It’s worth incorporating these into your daily diet to assist digestion and keep ‘everything moving’. The recommendation is to consume one or two pots per day for at least a fortnight. After this time the manufacturers are confident you will feel better with a noticeable reduction in bloating.

This too can be a factor in abdominal bloating. The link between the digestive system and emotions is well documented. Many people suffer from a ‘nervous tummy’ and most of us are familiar with that stomach lurching feeling or that urgent need to rush to the toilet when we are anxious or under pressure.

Gulping food down too quickly can also create bloating by allowing too much air to be swallowed. Remember how you have to ‘burp’ a baby when he guzzles down the contents of his bottle?

Chewing gum and drinking fizzy drinks can all cause the same problem. Taking time to eat slowly and chewing food properly can be helpful. Try eating smaller portions and putting the fork down between mouthfuls. You should also avoid drinking through straws.

Relaxation techniques or hypnosis may be the best long term solutions to help to deal with bloating caused by stress. When we are under severe stress the brain releases hormones that put an enormous burden on our digestive systems. But different people may react in completely different ways and while some may be unable to eat a single morsel others won’t be able to stop themselves raiding the fridge and gorging on comfort foods. It’s no wonder that stress has been implicated in digestive disorders including cramps, diarrhoea, heartburn and bloating.

Probably the most common cause of stomach bloating is food intolerance.

Not to be confused with Food Allergy which is a more serious condition where the immune system responds disproportionately to a certain normally harmless food, provoking in some cases, a severe and occasionally life threatening reaction. Food intolerance on the other hand is the inability of the body to properly break down and digest certain foods and ingredients.

One common cause of food intolerance is lactose found in cow’s milk. This occurs in some people who have a shortage of the enzyme lactase. Lactase is needed to break down milk sugar and allow it to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The symptoms of lactose intolerance can be mild or severe and include nausea, cramps, diarrhoea and bloating. A range of tests are available through your doctor to detect lactose intolerance. Anyone found to be intolerant to lactose will need to modify their diet and reduce their intake of milk and other dairy products.

Nowadays, lactose reduced milk and other products are available at most supermarkets. For those whose symptoms are more severe, lactase enzyme may be prescribed in liquid or tablet form to aid digestion.

Certain other types of food are well known to cause excess gas, for example: onions; broccoli; cabbage and beans etc.

There are also a number of ‘hidden’ foods and food additives that can also contribute to bloating and the best way of isolating those responsible is to follow a careful elimination diet for 3 – 7 days. The Flat Stomach Diet is a recommended source of information. This diet plan will help you achieve and maintain a flat stomach quickly, easily and permanently.

Recat Racing Avalanche XTR Review

In the last few years, Redcat Racing has brought to the market a wide range of vehicles from 1/16 scale all the way to 1/8 scale nitro. They have also included in their line four 1/10 scale electric vehicles, making your selection even more abundant.

Everyone knows the bigger companies in the R/C market but I like to find the smaller companies with smaller price tags, quality products and good service! Redcat Racing has some very tough competition and will need vehicles that are affordable and can take abuse in order to compete.

The 1/8 scale Avalanche XPR is the big dog in their line, being slightly larger than the earthquake. First impressions were good. I love the wide stance and beefy look. This truck looks durable!

When you open the box you are greeted with a brightly colored body. There are optional bodies available if you don’t like the color or scheme of the one that comes with the truck. And you can always pick up a 1/8 scale body from your favorite hobby shop! The body that comes with this truck is complete and need no further decals!

There is however one little thing about the body on this truck, and it appears to be normal business for the Redcat line of Nitro cars and trucks. You will notice there is no engine opening and the body is not cut to provide clearance for the exhaust exit. Both are quick and simple things to take care of and I rather enjoyed working on mine. You will notice the body mount holes are pre-drilled!

This truck is sold as a ready to run (RTR) truck. That means it comes with everything you need to use the truck except for the transmitter batteries, fuel and field equipment.

The Avalanche comes with a 2.4GHz radio system that is quite sufficient for this truck. If you prefer to use your own radio you may have to replace the receiver to match your transmitter as the Redcat radio systems may not be compatible with other brands.

You will notice the Avalanche shares it’s chassis with other models in the Redcat lineup. However, it benefits from bigger tires, stronger shocks and towers. This truck is somewhere between a small monster truck and an overgrown truggy. Whatever you decide to call it, the Avalanche looks good and should take some punishment with this design.

The front suspension and steering system looks very robust. One thing I often order when I get a new truck is suspension parts. Roles, flips and cartwheels are hard on a truck of this size and it is not uncommon to snap a hub or control arm but the Avalanche appears to be quite robust and I hope to be pleasantly surprised when nothing brakes.

The rest of the suspension, shocks, shock plates and turnbuckles follow suit in quality. The shocks are adjustable and the connecting plate is simple to remove and adjust.

Power Plant

Now let’s turn our attention on what gets the Avalanche moving! A big block.28 engin from SH Engines is installed and ready to make smiles happen! When it is go time and you command full power from the engine, that power is delivered to the wheels by way of a quality 3 shoe clutch system. This type of clutch is my favorite design. The clutch hooks up hard and fast when you nail the throttle yet it engages smoothly and confidently if you ease into the power slowly.

The muffler on the Avalanche is a tuned pipe that does its job, but there are better pipes out there. Keep in mind this is a stock truck and you can’t have all the upgrades out of the box at this price, or even at a price 5 times this price!.

When you get your new Avalanche you will have to break in the engine. As this is not an article or teaching about proper engine break in and maintenance I will forgo the “how to” but let me just say this. Nitro engines turn at high RPM and have extremely tight tolerances that have to be “worn in”. Follow the instruction that come with your Avalanche to the letter – if you do nothing else do this! You will be rewarded with a longer lasting, more reliable and higher power producing engine. Nuf said.

I conduct most of my test drives at one of two places — The local track or a large open dirt and grass field. This truck, being so aggressive looking was begging for the sand! So I packed up my new truck and headed out to the beach where I found a variety of surfaces to drive on. I drove the paved parking lot, loose sand of the beach, hard packed sand near the water and the dunes just off the beach that provided me the opportunity to get some sick air!

With the single speed transmission of the Avalanche and it’s light weight, climbing the hills, banks and dunes was no challenge. Acceleration and handling was awesome with the 4 wheel drive and oversized tires and the Avalanche was even more fun in the air.

The suspension kept the Avalanche in contact with the ground even after high jumps the truck did not have a tendency to bounce. The truck flies well too. When this truck is in the air it is quite stable and the ability to set the angle with the brake is impressive. I was able to get mine to do a front flip and land on its wheels on command.

The dual brakes are great. They really work well and compliment the truck. No matter how hard I run, the brakes remain strong. They are also extremely helpful in balancing the truck in the air. In the times it’s needed, push the throttle back to hit the brake and the truck will help you balance for a smooth 4 tire landing. Well, most of the time anyway. I occasionally miss the mark, but that has to do more with the driver than the truck. The Avalanche makes jumping pretty easy.

I ran the tar out of this truck for about a week and I intentionally played rough with it. I was trying to break it so I could report just how hard you can expect to run the Avalanche. What I found was a surprisingly tuff truck. The body was banged up and I did manage to break one of the body mount posts (a quick fix). All in all this is a very good value and a well-built truck.

As much as I like this truck, and I will continue to buy and test other Redcat vehicles, it is not without its flaws.

The Avalanche could use a few small things to make a it a 10! A larger fuel tank would be my first upgrade. A better tuned pipe would be number 2, I prefer the adjustable type offering settings for more torque or more top end. Lastly I would replace the steering servo with a higher torque metal gear type.

Offsetting my list of upgrades are a few of the points that make Redcat trucks my favorite all around – back yard bashing trucks. The Avalanche is competitively priced with other trucks in its category. The Avalanche XTR as tested is strong and fast. It is predictable and can be driven on just about any surface. Not to mention Redcat has a great warrantee program on its engines and vehicles along with awesome customer support. I have put the customer support to the test with questions and product help. I called contacted Redcat about a warrantee concern about an unrelated product and was promptly shipped a replacement part. I have been quite happy with Redcat’s customer support.

Overall the quality of the Redcat products and the excellent customer support keep me coming back. You can be sure of one thing; you will see more Redcat product review from me as I intend to put many of the Redcat Racing vehicles and planes to the test.

Four Essential Tattoo Techniques

When it comes to being a great artist in the field, you can’t say enough about the importance of acquiring the fundamental tattooing techniques.

Whether you are trying to create and transfer the perfect stencil or you want to master the ability to make designs appear to glow, it’s all about finding the right tattooing techniques and then practicing them until they’re perfect.

Here are four basic techniques that will give you a start on the path to becoming a truly skilled tattoo artist.

#1. Transferring a Design

Each artist has his or her own preferred tattooing techniques, and each one can tell you why you should do something a certain way. Of course, another artist will tell you just as adamantly why you should use a completely different technique to do the same exact thing!

It’s hard to find total agreement on any one topic in the industry.

This rule holds true, even for the seemingly simple act of transferring a design from paper to the skin through the means of a stencil. There are several tattooing techniques that can be used, but probably the most popular involves the use of an unexpected agent: deodorant. To be more specific, many artists recommend the use of Speed Stick deodorant to help the lines of a stencil stick to the client’s skin.

Here is how to do it…

To do this properly, make sure you have drawn a mirror image of the design onto your tracing paper. Next, apply a light coating of Speed Stick to the skin. To avoid potential contamination, it is best to do this with a tongue depressor rather than by placing the product directly to the skin. Now, press the tracing paper, image side down, against the skin. It will stick slightly due to the deodorant. Rub the entire surface of the paper firmly, and when you gently pull it from the skin, you will see that the design is left behind and is facing the right direction.

#2. Creating a Bridge

Some tattooing techniques are all about the fundamentals, and that is definitely true when it comes to creating “the bridge.” This term refers to the way in which a tattoo artist holds his or her hand when pressing the needles to the client’s skin.

While holding the needle tube of the tattoo machine in the same way you would hold a pencil, you will find that the rest of the hand-held mechanism is over your hand. The device is top-heavy because of its design, and it takes skill and practice to master holding it for long periods of time while maintaining enough control to create an attractive design.

In order to add as much stability to the process as possible, you want to create a bridge with your hand. That means to place the heel of your hand on the client’s skin while still holding the needle tube like a pencil. This bridge helps to stabilize your hand and also serves as a pivot point while you work. It allows you to create much smoother lines, as well as to tattoo for longer periods of time.

#3. Working in Order

One of the biggest time wasters that a new tattoo artist can face is having to redo a stencil. This can happen because the original placement wasn’t correct, because it didn’t transfer fully, or-perhaps most frustratingly-because the artist himself has smeared or rubbed the transfer off of the skin. There are a few tattooing techniques that can remedy these situations.

In the case of smearing and rubbing, a common approach is to start outlining at one corner and work your way up and across to the other.

Generally speaking, it works best to start in the lower right-hand corner. Picture in your mind how your hand will be resting on the client’s skin, and you can see how working from top to bottom and right to left will keep that hand from dragging over parts of the design that haven’t yet been lined. Of course, if you are left-handed, it would make more sense to start at the bottom left corner of the design.

It’s impossible to always avoid smearing or rubbing a transferred design, but using this particular tattooing technique can definitely lessen the problem. Staying aware of what you’re doing will also help; if you’re thinking ahead, you’ll be able to avoid some complications. Remember that you’ll likely have to go back in and fill in the occasional line, and there’s no shame in that.

#4. Creating Smooth, Solid Lines

A major pitfall for the newbie tattoo artist is the inability to avoid knots, blowouts, and other signs that too much ink was quickly put into one spot. When this happens, the ink has nowhere to go and ends up spreading out under the skin, making a permanent mark that can ruin the overall design.

There are a few tattoo techniques you can employ in order to minimize or avoid creating these unsightly mistakes. First of all, make sure that your ink reservoir is full before you put the needle to the skin. This will allow you to run a line longer, without having to stop partway through and then pick back up, increasing your chance for a blowout or knot.

If you do need to stop partway through a line and then start again, try lightly lifting your needle toward the end of the first pass and then putting it back down lightly when tracing back over the spot and starting again. This gives the opportunity for the line to be as dark as the others but without the worry of putting down too much ink in one pass.

Another safeguarding tattooing technique is to make sure that the needle is already running before you press it to the skin, and to already have your hand starting the forward motion, too. This can help keep the needles from snagging or hanging up, which is another reason for knots and blowouts.

There is no shortage of hints, tattoo tips, and tattoo techniques that tattoo artists use to perfect their skills and hone their craft. Each professional you come across will likely have his or her own suggestions for how to make the process better, whether they’re offering advice on how to get sharper corners or thoughts on the best way to make your own needles.

If Your HDMI Cables Are Too Short, What Can You Do?

A pretty common problem that comes with the advent of HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) becoming the new industry standard for transmitting TV signals is how to select the correct length HDMI lead. In the old days when everything was carried by RG6 Coaxial cable, it was possible to run the signal over pretty long runs and then simply cut the cable to length and fit a coax connector and simply connect it to the TV. Although RG6 cable is still used to connect the satellite dish to say for example a Freesat+ receiver, the output from the box to the TV will now invariably be a HDMI cable.

Another complicating factor is the popularity of hanging Flat screen TVs on a bare walls or over a fireplace. Obviously nobody wants HDMI cables tacked along the wall, so invariably the cables are being buried in the wall and normally run from the TV to a nearby built in unit which will house the satellite receiver. What makes selecting the correct length of lead is that it is not possible to simply extend or shorten the lead. In general there is a good selection of HDMI cables ranging from 1m all the way up to 20m, with the upper limit being due to the level of signal loss that occurs in cables that are no longer than 20m.

No matter how well you plan it there is always a possibility the the cable will too short. For example the HDMI input on your new HD TV is in a different location than you expected, or you decide to mount the TV in a slightly different location. There are 2 options when it comes to extending a HDMI cable.

The first and simplest option is to simply use a HDMI coupler which comes with sockets on both ends into which to insert HDMI cables. This option is both inexpensive, compact and does not need a power supply. It is however only suitable to use when the combined length of the 2 cables is less than 20m.

The other option is to use a HDMI repeater, which is a powered unit that both joins 2 HDMI cables together and also boosts the signal. Normally this unit is used when combining HDMI leads where the combined length is over 20m. The need to have the unit plugged in and its cost are certainly issues, but this is an essential unit on very long runs.

A final note on HDMI cables is that in general over short runs, the difference in the signal loss between a low cost and an expensive HDMI is pretty minimal. Where spending the extra money is worth while is on long runs of cable. Most of the cost lost HDMI supplier don’t do budget level cables that are longer than 5 or 10m.

Mortgage Sales: Overcoming Objections

As a loan officer, it is important to keep your pipeline full at all times. For this reason, it goes without saying, that you should be taking as many applications as you can throughout the week.

Obtaining leads to be turned into applications can be obtained in a variety of ways. Such as, networking, customer referrals, family, friends, mortgage lead providers, etc.

Another method, probably the most dreaded in every sales force, but also very necessary to keep app’s coming in is cold calling.

We all know the feeling of rejection over the telephone, but it is very important to maintain your persistence and overcome these obstacles.

I completely understand that there is no way to overcome the objection of a customer hanging up on you. My only advice would be to not dwell on it, or take it personally, just move onto the next call.

Keep in mind, for a lot of people, purchasing or refinancing a home is a huge financial undertaking in a person’s life. Perhaps the biggest, so be understanding if they seem defensive or get cold feet.

I’m sure you are familiar with hearing “I’m no longer interested,” or “I just closed on my loan last week.”

For starters, don’t even give the customer the opportunity to give you an objection.

Remember, you are the expert, so you do the talking.

Your opening line should be something like this:

Hello Mrs. Jones, my name is Susie Smith and I understand that you are interested in a mortgage. I have some great products that I believe would fit your needs and budget. If you don’t mind, I would like to take just a few moments to go over them with you.

This approach immediately takes the pressure off of the customer, and nine times out of ten they will be willing to listen.

Remember, it is all in the approach and the tone of your voice, smile when you talk, it will reflect in your voice. And be nice, relax your customer, make them comfortable, and you are half way there.

The Importance of Showroom Interior Design

Building developers understand the importance of a well-decorated showroom; indeed, showroom interior design is the most important facet when it comes to securing sales for new housing developments. Consequently, inner design must be fundamental to the priorities of all property developers who want to be successful within the housing market.

However, property development is a time-consuming, complicated process; property developers frequently find it difficult to set aside time to perfect the interior design of their showrooms. More often than not, the interior design requirements of a showroom property must be subcontracted to specialist companies.

Successful showrooms take time to develop and need the professional expertise of an organisation that understands the difficulty of the task. Interior design is an artistic process the goal of which is to capture attention and imbue potential buyers with the imagination to conceive of a lifestyle choice that pertains to the development being viewed – this is the aim of the showroom, to make potential buyers feel that they belong to the concept elicited by the home. Showroom interior design has a proven track record in maximising sales appeal, and thus can ‘make-or-break’ a developer’s dreams.

Comprehensive interior design processes will include consultations between developers and designers in order to capture the essence of the lifestyle that is being designed. Budgets vary, but at very little cost, interior design can return huge revenues. Enhancing the saleability of the property beyond, even, the imagination of the developer – a well-presented showroom can maximise sale potential well beyond projected figures. Presentation really is the key to selling property, regardless of whether this is a single property or a whole complex.

A comprehensive showroom design will consist of delivery of all furnishings, as well as their arrangement in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. Finishing touches and embellishments must be thoroughly thought out and planned – using a professional interior designer, who understands the market and has a proven record, is essential for any developer wishing to flourish within the property market. Designers must be current and understand the intricacies of current interior trends in order to ensure that they undertake a project where the results will speak for themselves.

Emblem Furniture is one such designer, offering comprehensive showroom interior design packages intended to increase sales potential. Not only are all furnishings provided, the showrooms are fully designed and assembled using concept designs. Working closely with developers to ensure that their visions come to light in the most stylish and fashionable creations imaginable, Emblem Furniture can create scenes that once seen, are never forgotten, all showrooms are designed according to market requirements and in reference to consultation with developers. Creating designs that reflect both current trends, and the wishes of the developer.

The Top 10 Ways to Integrate Field Sales With Inside Sales

Do your field and inside sales team work harmoniously with one another or do they operate unto themselves in separate kingdoms?

Unfortunately many inside and outside sales teams exist in open conflict with one another vying over accounts, sales and territories. The time and effort it requires to handle the subterfuge is simply not worth it. Not only does it impact the morale of your reps (and your company), it affects the relationships and perceptions of your customers and prospects, not to mention your sales revenues.

Inside sales and outside sales can and should work in unison to produce stellar results. Here are 10 ways to bring these two powerful sales teams together and maximize their results.

1. Report to a Single Executive

If the field sales team reports to a sales executive and the inside sales team reports to a customer service or operations executive (as it often does), conflict is inevitable. Each department has different priorities and there are bound to be clashes. But the moment a single sales executive is made directly accountable for the results both teams is the moment that the squabbling ends and entire department begins to fire on all cylinders.

2. Develop Blistering Clear Plans & Communicate

The biggest battle with inside and outside sales teams is ‘who handles this and who gets credits for that.’ While there will never be perfect division of accounts and territories take the time to think and plan your approach. Marginal, inactive and geographical remote accounts are perfect for your tele-sales team and will force you field sales team to focus on priority accounts.

Explain the rationale in writing so it is indelible to them and to you! If accounts are given up or traded, reduce sensitivities by paying double commissions for three or four months. This step will save you hours of needless conflict and help make the transition smoother.

3. Compensate and Motivate in Like Manner

You do not have to pay your inside sales team exactly the same as your field sales reps but you must pay in ‘like’ manner. If your field sales comp program includes base, commission and bonus so too should your inside sales team on a proportionate basis. This strategy reduces the ‘have’ and ‘have not’ mentality.

If there is a sales contest, make certain inside sales is an active participant and ‘mind the gap.’ Avoid the temptation of offering lavish rewards (e.g., the trip to Vegas or Hawaii) for field sales and offering pathetic rewards (toaster ovens or movies passes) for inside sales. If the recognition gap is so vast- and it often is- it sends a resounding and discouraging message to your inside sales team.

4. Create an In-to-Out Career Path

One of the best strategies is to develop a career path where you inside reps can be promoted to outside reps; a farm system. This will do several things. First, your inside team works harder and smarter for a chance at achieving an outside sales position. Second, the cost of recruiting and selecting a field rep is reduced dramatically. Third, the customer barely notices the transition because they get an experienced, knowledgeable rep. Finally, once the inside rep becomes an outside rep, the integration process becomes much more complete.

5. Attend Conferences, Trade Shows and Other Event, Together

Tension, frustration and confusion are reduced dramatically when the sales teams meet together at the same events, conferences and trade shows. Typically they have to work as a team on the trade floor. They begin to bond at lunch and dinner. They ‘play’ together in evening. It works if for no other reason then they get to know one another.

6. Attend Sales Meeting Together

This is so obvious that it is very often overlooked. Integrate inside and field sales by having them attend the same sales meetings. Have them participate, present results and be held accountable to one another. If the team is geographically spread out, have a conference call so that communication is fostered. If you have a sales rally or president’s club, make absolutely certain that both attend.

7. Train in Exact Manner

If training is required train the teams together. For example, ‘boot camp’ training is a great way to get reps to bond together from the get-go. If you have skills or knowledge training sessions throughout the year, pull your teams together. Do NOT train inside and outside teams separately.

8. The Day in/Day Out program

Here’s one of the best tips to pull your teams together. Every quarter or every six months have the outside reps spend a day on the phone with the inside rep. Have the inside rep spend a day on the road with the field rep. In short order, each rep will have a great appreciation of the job and one another.

9. Do Not Tolerate, Excuse or Permit Saboteurs

Here’s the cold hard truth: depending on your situation and environment, you can expect that some reps will seek to sabotage the efforts of others. A saboteur is a rep who subconsciously and often consciously, seeks to wreck, dilute or cheat the policies you have established. For example, a field rep might say to customers, “I can’t deal with you any more. You’re stuck with an inside rep” and thus taint the entire program. Equally, an inside rep might remark, “Your field reps never visited you in the first place, so I’m your new account rep” which simply shows the customer that your sales team is on shaky ground.

Sentiments like these will lose you customers in a heartbeat. Deal with these saboteurs quickly, efficiently and if necessary, brutally. Stick to the policies. Do not tolerate belligerence because it will fester and spread.

10. Be Vigilant and Keep Your Word

Continuously monitor the integration of your teams. If you get wind of dissension, act fast and deal with it. Get your managers together and talk. Don’t ignore the situation.

Above all, keep your word. Beware the temptation to change the rules as you go because it will have a significant impact on sales results, morale and customer satisfaction. Walk the walk.

Integrating inside and outside is really a matter of common sense. The ultimate key to making the integration program work for you is to have the WILL to stay the course. There will be a brief struggle as reps learn to change and adjust but if you follow these tips you’ll weather the storm and your sales will grow.
