Denotation And Connotation

Denotative meaning depends on the culture of the people while connotative meaning is universal. Denotative meaning is the true meaning of a word. For example, the word, kill – to quench something. Connotative meaning is the meaning of a word taking the context into consideration. For example, the ship is at the bank. This couldn’t be a place where money is kept, as in banking institution, but beside the river side.

Thus, most of the words used do not have denotative meaning but rather connotative meaning. For example, she is a dog (meaning she is promiscuous or licentious). English words have various shades of meaning. A word may denote one thing and connote another. The denotation of a word is the specific, exact and primary meaning of a word independent of its emotional or secondary meaning.

It is the specific person, object, sensation, idea, action or condition it signifies or names. It could also be called “referential meaning”. For instance, white denote colour ‘all white”. The denotation of words like bottle, book, or cup is the objects or things which these words literally refer. Denotative words therefore correspond directly in the meaning to the exact words which they point in the usual and obvious sense. It is possible to have a single lexical item to denote different things or types of objects in which the denotation are logical extension of the basic meaning of the word. For example, the word head, body, branch and bar.

The denotative meaning of a word is universal because it is fixed and it is the same all over the world. The connotative meaning of a word is implied meaning of a word brought about through feelings, emotions and value judgment. It can also be referred to as emotive or affective meaning. It is culture and time-bound and has to do with the attitude of the language user, that is, the emotional reaction of a language user to the use of a word.

For instance, white by denotation is a type of colour but has purity as a connotative meaning. Connotation refers to the meaning which a word suggests in addition to the basic or fundamental meaning. The word man in addition to it denotation connotes maturity, strength, masculinity and courage. A woman on the other hand denotes female human adult and has its connotative meaning to be feminine, fragility and tenderness.

The word house denotes a dwelling place or residence, but it connotes a place of refuge and security. Home on the other hand denotes a dwelling place or residence, but connotes family, affection, childhood memory, re-assuring sense of welcome.

Connotative meaning is more concern with attitude of language use and emotional reactions to the use of words based on previous experience. In other words, connotative shows the relationship between words and people and its meaning depends on culture, society, experience and environment which can vary from one part of the world to the other. Many words do have widely accepted connotation and these determine the electrical charge of a word i.e. positive or negative, favourable or unfavourable, generous or harsh.

Some people’s mindset about the connotative meaning of the word man is that it means wickedness, inconsiderate, callous, uncaring, devil, etc. To others, however, it may mean caring, loving, cheering, considerate, etc. It depends.

How to Discover the Truth About Fracking

Chris Faulkner presents a fascinating look at fracking in his new book " The Fracking Truth: America's Energy Revolution – The Inside, Untold Story ."

Faulkner's main assumption is that fracking technology provides a means for America to solve its energy problem with less risk and great gain. The United Kingdom has taken the lead in developing regulations to fully develop fracking and Faulkner argues the EPA needs to do the same thing to significantly expand fracking in this country.

Chris Faulkner is not an oilman but became part of the industry by designing advanced exploration software that to identify oil resources that would go undetected using traditional means. That rejected in him forming the Breitling Energy Corporation.

The author describes " The Fracking Truth " as a primer on the ongoing energy revolution as well as a call to action. Since the 1940s when fracking began in the US the process has yielded more than seven billion barrels of oil, more than 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. By fracking with the horizontal drilling approach, America can meet its energy needs without all the fallout predicted by doomsday opponents.

When discussing climate change, the author writes: "… climate change requires us to be clear-headed enough to recognize the potential solution that fracked natural gas offers. In short, if you want to arrest catastrophic climate change, you can not Get there from here without an abundant supply of natural gas that comes courty of the fracking boom. "

While we need to be concerned about the large volume of water required for fracking, Faulkner points out that the 2 to 4 million gallons of water required for each fracking job is about the same amount of water a golf course uses in a typical summer month.

Fracking is an important energy technology and it is important for Americans to be well informed of its benefits and risks. The best way to accomplish this is to obtain a copy of "T he Fracking Truth " and spend the 2-3 hours required to read it and another couple hours thinking about how the information obtained relates to our future survival.

History of Austin Healey Automobiles

In 1952 the Earl's Court Motor Show served as the birthplace of the Austin-Healey automobile company. It was there that Leonard Lord owner of the Austin Motor Company discovered Donald Healey and the Healey 100. Lord, desperately seeking to find a sports car to compete with Jaguar and Triumph, fell in love with the Healey 100 which quickly became the star of the Show. And impromptu meeting between Healey and Lord came a few weeks later and the Austin Healey Motor Company was born.

The original design, fitted with an Austin A90 four cylinder engine, rolled off the assembly line in Longbridge from 1953 through 1955. The Healey 100 BN-1 featured a three speed manual transmission with overdrive on second and third girl. It was followed up with the introduction of the Healey 100 BN-2 in 1955 upgrading to a four speed gearbox with overdrive on the top gear.

In 1956 the 4 cylinder engine was ditched in favor of the 2.6 liter Austin Westminster six cylinder engine and two addition seats were added. The Austin-Healey 100/6 BN-4 four-seater lasted only two years as it proved to not be as popular as its two seat predecessor.

The 1960's brought about all kinds of innovations to Austin-Healey produced automobiles. The most noticeable change was the introduction of front wheel disc brakes, providing better stability and increased stopping power. A second carburetor was added increasing power and performance. Later those carburetors would have swapped out for larger versions which were then synchronized. A soft convertible top became an option allowing for additional comfort and with that came about the addition of roll down windows.

In 1968 Donald Healey ended his relationship with the Austin-Healey Motor Company to join Jensen Motors who had been making the bodies and chassis for the company. The Austin-Healey name would survive until 1971, though a few Austin-Healey designs were produced under the name Austin in the early part of 1972. Its limited edition 20 year history Austin-Healey made a name for themselves in the racing world and the Automobiles themselves are more popular than ever among restorers and collectors.

There will not be any new designs, since the company dissolved over forty years ago, but there's little question that the seller made a lasting effect on the world of classic cars. Even after all these decades they look great, sleek, and still get many motorists excited at their very sight.

Juicy Babies

I normally do not begin an article with a caveat, but I'm making an exception this time. If you have a weak stomach, are feeling nauseous, do not like gross stuff, have recently eaten something or something like you do not take into risk, quit while you are ahead. If you continue on either because you are strong in the gullet or are just morbidly curious, do not send me any dry cleaning bills because I warned you.

Oh, is there a more joyous time than when you get the news that a little one is on the way? Assuming, of course, that you were hoping for a little one. If you were one of those not excited about getting a bundle of joy, assume for the next few minutes you were happy. The news started to go out about the big upcoming event. Cute, sweet, cuddly, precious, wonderful and soft are all words that come to mind to describe the stork's payload. Well, I have decided after having my two children that another descriptor needs to be added to the list– juicy. Yep, I have not seen one yet that does not leak from every orifice they have. Babies are indeed juicy.

If you are a parent or have spent a significant amount of time caring for a child, you know exactly what I mean. The various and assorted fluids that a kid produces all amount to a production of liquid and goo that DuPont would be proud of. I have no idea how a 15 pound infant that takes in 30 ounces of milk a day can produce 7 gallons of juice in return. There are certainly laws of physics being violated here somehow.

The thing that makes it even worse is the way they produce it in ambush form. It's like having a street gang in your neighborhood where random drive-by slimings occurs regularly. You never know when one is near so you either learn to stay prepared all the time or become impersonated to the fact that an attack has been launched. There is nothing worse than walking barefoot across the carpet and feeling a wet something under your foot. Sometimes I'm even afraid to look. I usually just hop away in a dramatic demonstration of my ranting and gagging prowess. In an effort to one-up my daughter, my son opened up the world of acid reflux to us. "Acid Reflux" a medical technical term that translates "spews like Mount Kilauea". The absolute worst thing that happened to me, though, was when he popped a cork of Enfamil bubbly down my shirtless back in the middle of the night. I got a full body shiver so badly I'm surprised he did not end up with shaken baby syndrome and all I could do was run in circles screaming "It's on me! Let me tell you, there is not a shower hot enough to get that sensation off of you. It's like getting PCP in your system, once it's there, its there. I occasionally still feel it out of the blue. Brrrr.

I think teaching may be one of the largest point source producers of juice. It's maybe not as gross as some of the other juice forms, but well made up for in sheer volume. There was an instance recently where I had my son sitting on my shoulders and he proceeded to drool a river on top of my head to the point my hair was wet with baby spit. And I've just resigned myself to the fact that my shoulders are going to be teeth toys until he is fourteen.

And what is with their little noses? I have seen leaky spigots before but kids do not come equipped with the first o-ring I can change. We've all heard the expression "You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can not pick your friends nose." I wish someone would have told me about the parent version that says "You will not see your friends nearly as much and you will be expected to pick your kids nose." I never imagined in my worst dream that I'd be wiping noses, that were not my own mind you, with my bare fingers, but I'm telling you it has happened. And is there anything better than a full-on sneeze right in the kisser? Invariably, this will happen when your hands are full and the only thing you can do is try and get your face into a breeze so it dries quickly. And speaking of drying, I do not know what that stuff is made of, but once it does dry, you need a wrecking ball and jack hammer to break it loose.

I do not think I need to go on, but I will just a little bit anyway. I could not end something like this without venturing into the diaper zone (hey, I never said this was sophistic or classy). The stories of what happens (especially where little boys are concerned) when the diaper comes off are legendary. I had a hard time believing it until I witnessed it for myself. All babies, including the girls, come equipped with a most impressive water cannon. I've seen my daughter launch some pretty amazing streams, too. If you have ever seen the fountains in front of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas you can imagine the show. The difference is there is no musical accompaniment and I've never seen anyone take a shot to the eye while standing on Las Vegas Boulevard. It may be sterile, but that does not offer much consolation in the moment.

Do not get me wrong, I love them to pieces and would not trade them for the world. I just wish that when we had all those baby showers someone would have given me a rain coat.

About God

Edgar Cayce’s discourses provide us with

some enlightened views into the nature of

God. They have described God as “the Universal

Consciousness,” as “the Creative Forces,” as

“the Oneness,” as “Spirit,” as “Law,” and as our

“eternal companion.”

Let’s explore Cayce’s perspective on God.

His readings state that the first incarnate

people to consciously maintain a relationship

with God were “The Children of the Law of

One.” Their faith held a belief that despite all

the appearances of “manyness,” separation,

and individualness, there remained an unseen,

underlying oneness in which all the diversity of

life had its true existence.

He said: “The first lesson for SIX MONTHS

should be ONE – One – One – ONE; Oneness of

God, oneness of man’s relation, oneness of force,

oneness of time, oneness of purpose, ONENESS

in every effort – Oneness – Oneness!” (900-429)

In a discussion about the oneness of universal

forces, Cayce interrupted the questioner and

encouraged all of us to think of true oneness as

the “FULLNESS rather of the whole, than of a

ONENESS in the matter given.” (136-52) After

years of searching to understand this, I have

come to sense when my involvement in activities

and relationships is in harmony with the fullness

of the whole. For me, the term “the whole” has

come to mean the entirety of all life within God’s

being. It’s as if I become a harmonious cell in

the complex body of the infinite, omnipotent, all-inclusive Creator. It’s a quieting feeling that

leads me to contentment without any egocentric

sense of my role in the whole. My role is simply

natural. It is expected of me. A cooperative

attitude helped lead me to understanding “the

fullness of the whole.” The spirit or energy

unique to a cooperative attitude subtly shifts me

toward the fullness of the whole, because I’m

attempting to consider the whole rather than my

personal role.

Let’s recap this perspective on God.

God is a oneness that is the fullness of the

whole. A cooperative attitude in our activities

and relationships helps us to awaken to the

fullness of the whole rather than remain in

our egocentric role or only seeing the matter at

hand, not the bigger picture. But it takes time

and patience for these mind-expanding perceptions

to become clear and to be felt in our daily

activities and relationships.

Universal Consciousness

Cayce also referred to God as the Universal

Consciousness, a collective within which all

other consciousnesses exist. He taught that an

individual mind could rise and expand out of

its finite awareness into the infinite, universal

mind of God, the Universal Consciousness. This

teaching fits well with the teaching about the

fullness of the whole. God’s mind contains all

minds (and even more). When we expand our

consciousness into God’s, we ultimately perceive

the fullness of the whole and true oneness.

Along with this teaching, Cayce indicated that

God was impersonal, adding that God could be

so very personal when needed. (1158-12) In the

Eastern world this is an easy concept to accept.

But in the West, it is very difficult to think of God

as impersonal. Yet, when I was seeking a breakthrough

in my search for full consciousness of

God, this little teaching helped me make that

breakthrough. It also helped me take another

step away from egocentric selfhood that limited

me from fully merging with the infinite nature

of God.

Accepting God as a universal consciousness

naturally calls for us to practice rising out of

our individual consciousness into the Universal

Consciousness. In one of the most interesting

readings that I have ever read, an angel speaking

through Cayce states that there are two ways

for us to develop a heavenly connection. One is

to cry to heaven to come down to our level of

consciousness. The other is to lift our consciousness

up to heaven’s level of consciousness. Here’s

the reading: “no one approaches the Throne

– or the threshold of universal consciousness

– without that purpose of EITHER lifting self

to that consciousness or bringing us DOWN to

their own ideal.” (311-5) The angel warned that

always attempting to bring heaven is help down

to one’s level becomes a stumbling block to one’s

soul growth. It is important that we learn to lift

up and out of our individual consciousness and

into the Universal Consciousness.

In what may be some of the most disquieting

readings, Cayce stated that God is law. Then, in

a seeming paradox, he describes God is law as

“love”! This is difficult for the human mind to

grasp. We consider love to be free, flowing, and

without control or order. Love is a spirit. Love

seems counter to law. We think of law as confining.

We think of love as liberating. Yet, Cayce

takes these two and states firmly that despite the

paradox, there is a law that cannot be ignored,

and that law is love. Rather than telling us to do

this or follow that, Cayce directs us to increase

our love, especially love for God and others (the

two great commandments).

Here’s one of his readings on this subject.

“Knowledge, as has been given of old, that has

caused humanity’s uprising and down-sitting, is

from misapplication of law. Know that your God

IS law; that law is love.

“Know then the law and apply it, but COMPLY

in your own life, in your OWN application, by

doing that yourselves that you would have your

neighbor do!

“This makes for that which is in keeping

with a fact that has been from the foundations

of the earth – God IS! And they that would know

Him must believe that He is and may be made

manifest in their dealings with their fellow man!

“Then until you yourselves, as individuals,

may see that you would worship in your Creator,

in those that would speak evil of you, those that

hate and despitefully use you, you have not

begun to think!

“For as the person thinks in his/her heart, so

is he/she.

“Then, if you would not be condemned, condemn

not. If you would have faith, SHOW faith.

If you would have love, show love.

“Yes, you say, ‘This I have heard so often!’ Yes,

but what have you done about it?

“You must realize, then, that God IS – and

your body is the temple of your God! Do you

meet Him there?

“The kingdom of heaven is within. Do you

worship there? Not yourself, but your God?”

(254-101, edited)

The Cayce readings also support Jesus’ teaching

to the woman at the well: God is a spirit, and

those who seek to love and know God must do so

in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

The apostle John writes about this in his first

“My loved ones, let us have love for one

another: because love is of God, and everyone

who has love is a child of God and has knowledge

of God. He who has no love has no knowledge of

God, because God is love.

“My loved ones, if God had such love for us,

it is right for us to have love for one another. No

man has ever seen God, but if we have love for

one another, God is in us and his love is made

complete in us: And his Spirit which he has given

us is the witness that we are in him and he is in

us.” (1 John 4:7-8, 11-13)

We find the spirit of God as we live with love in

our hearts and minds, in our words and actions.

Just as God is law and that law is love, so God’s

spirit is the essence we feel when we love.

Last, and perhaps most important, Cayce

identifies God as our eternal companion, and

our purpose for existence is to be a companion to

God. Here are a few readings on this point:

“GOD thought sufficient of thee to make thee

a companion with Him throughout eternity.

God cannot think more of thee than ye think of

yourself, or more than that measure in which ye

treat thy brother Godlike. That’s what God thinks

of thee!” (5142-1 edited)

“With what has humanity been endowed by

the Creator? All that would be necessary for each

individual soul-entity to be a companion with

God. And that is God’s desire toward each soul.

“It isn’t that God chose to reserve or save

anything that was good from man, so long as

man was, is, and will be one who uses that living

soul as a companion with God. That’s God’s purpose.

That should be man’s purpose.” (3976-29,

“The Destiny of the Soul: Each individual as a

child of the Creative Force came into being that

it, that child, might be a companion with the

Creative Force, God, in its activity. This was given

by the very breath, by the desire, by the will of the

Father that with which it might be one with the

Father. Not the Body as manifested in the flesh;

not the Mind alone that may partake of all those

environs through which it passes; but the Soul,

which is as lasting as eternity, as the Creative

Force, as the Creative Energy, as God Himself. We,

through Him, might know ourselves to be one

with Him. He has not willed that any Soul should

perish. Then, the Destiny of the Soul – as of all

creation – is to be one with Him; continually

growing, growing, for that association.”

Call Him Creator-Man

Like Walt Disney and George Lucas, Stan Lee has co-created some of the most iconic characters in pop culture: Spider-Man, X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and the Incredible Hulk. Movie's based on his super-characters have generated more than $ 2.3 billion in US ticket sales. Toys, books and games have generated billions more.

Lee is one of the most important figures in American popular culture. He began working for Marvel (then Timely) Comics in 1939, with his first published work appearing in May 1941. The following year, at age 20, he was editor and chief writer, creating stories for a variety of romance, horror, humor, Science-fiction and suspense comics.

By 1960, competitor DC comics had launched a team of superheroes called the Justice League of America. Marvel publisher Martin Goodman demanded a response, and in 1961, Lee and Jack Kirby produced Fantastic Four No. 1. Fan response was phenomenal, with critics today calling the work a masterful step forward in comic-book evolution.

Lee would continue creating and co-creating characters for Marvel over the next two decades. Along the way, he published some of the market's most valuable collectibles, with key issues of Marvel Comics often demanding more than a quarter million dollars.

With the Walt Disney Company in the process of purchasing Marvel Entertainment – further cementing his status in American culture – Lee is busier than ever. He most recently launched POW! Entertainment to create, produce and license new characters. He hosted two seasons of the Syfy channel show "Who Wants to be a Superhero?" And he's executive producer of several motion pictures based on Marvel characters (Black Panther, Nick Fury, Thor) that are yet to be released.

Surprisingly, Lee does not consider himself a collector. "Collecting is great," he says with a laugh, "if you have the time for it!"

Q: Of the 15 top-grossing movies in the United States, George Lucas' characters have grossed about $ 1.2 billion in ticket sales and your characters have grossed $ 1.1 billion.
A: Damn! He's always beating me! I do not like being in second place!

Q: Do you consider yourself one of the most successful creators in Hollywood?
A: Of course not! Lucas does movies. I only wrote a lot of comic book stories which other people have made into great movies. I had nothing to do with the movies and yet I seem to get so much credit for them. I feel like a phony!

Q: But Lucas created Luke Skywalker, you created Peter Parker. He created Darth Vader, you created Dr. Doom. Lucas wrote the stories, you wrote the stories.
A: Yeah, but he also produced and directed those movies. I did not have anything to do with the movies. That's the only thing. I think I was very instrumental in making these characters famous and successful as comic book characters. In the comic book field, I did very well and I am happy to accept all the credit that might be heaped upon me. But the movies that have made all this money you're talking about, while they were based on things that I wrote, they were written and directed and acted by other people. I had nothing to do with that. So I would be an idiot to compare myself to a George Lucas. I think I'm cuter! [Laughs]

Q: So there you are, working at Marvel Comics for more than 40 years, with comic books all over the place. But you never really collected them?
A: I never had time to be a collector. I was always too busy writing. You know, I'm probably one of the world's greatest hack writers because I got paid for what I wrote. The more I wrote, the more money I made. So I was writing all the time so I could pay my bills. Collecting is great if you have the time for it! Also, when I was writing, I never for a minute thought that years later these comics would turn out to be collectibles.

Q: Your wife Joanie is a collector.
A: Her tastes are very catholic. She was the first person I know who years ago latched on to African art when nobody knew what it was. She was buying these bits of sculpture from Nairobi and God knows where else. She collects paintings, sculpture, antique jewelry, watches. Anything that she finds attractive, she collects.

Q: Even though you had a full plate at Marvel, but wanted to do more. In the late 1950s, you started a newspaper comic, Mrs. Lyons' Cubs with artist Joe Maneely. Then in 1960, you and artist Dan DeCarlo created the Willie Lumpkin comic strip, and that was followed by The Virtue of Vera Valiant, which you did with Frank Springer. In 1977, of course, you launched the Spider-Man newspaper strip. Why the desire to produce a syndicated strip?
A: I was always trying to do something that would break out and be a huge success.

Q: But Stan, was not creating Spider-Man keeping you busy enough?
A: I did not know Spider-Man was that successful in the beginning. It took a few years before I realized we were on to something. I wanted to do something big, but we had bad luck.

Q: But you wanted to be syndicated because …
A: In those days, newspaper syndication was the big leagues and comic books were the minor leagues, the bush leagues. Maybe if you were good, you would graduate to newspaper syndication. The funny thing is today it's almost reversed.

Q: A few years ago, you started releasing, through Heritage Auction Galleries, your file copies from your days at Marvel. Those included Spider-Man # 1, X-Men # 1, Amazing Fantasy # 15 and Fantastic Four # 1.
A: Those books that went to auction were just books that somehow I had accumulated. I did not save them as part of any savings plan or collection. There might have been a story that I liked that I did not feel like throwing the book away that quickly. I was always giving the books away! These were just some books that I had not gotten around to giving away!

Q: What about original artwork?
A: You know, we never had room. We worked in one little office. … So we'd give the artwork away, the original artwork, to kids who'd come up to deliver a sandwich, or to a cleaning woman who did not want it. We did not know. We've thrown them away. Who knew?

Q: Finally, I have to ask. Did you ever mail off $ 1 plus 25 cents for postage and handling to get your very own X-Ray Specs?
A: As a matter of fact, Johnson Smith was the company that sold a lot of that stuff. The thing I sent away for most – I sent off for it a few times because I lost one – they have a little gadget that I felt was the most valuable thing in the world, because if you had this, you could do anything! It had a little magnifying glass and a little compass and a little knife blade and God knows what else. How I loved it!

Read About the Basic Difference Between RV and Trailers

The RV travel Trailers were established in the year 1920, trailing behind regular vehicles. Such trailers were used mainly for accommodation. Hence, they are very small as compared to a recreational vehicle. However, over the years, such trailers have changed their shape, size and amenities. The basic difference between a recreational vehicle and a trailer is that the former has multiple compartments used for traveling all over the world. It comes with a living room, bedroom, and kitchen and bath room. However, a travel trailer is small in size and is often fitted with just a sleeping compartment. It would basically accommodate two people; however the larger ones can accommodate a group of friends etc.

The recent new arrivals in the recreational vehicles are equipped with many amenities, which enable them to serve as a motor home or hotels. Due to the larger size and the multiple functions, the “RV” requires greater maintenance as compared to the travel trailer. Visiting different places across the world is such an interesting experience. Though there are many modern infrastructures like malls and theme parks for people to relax and chill out, camping trips and nature trip seems to be the best preferred means of leisure for many. While traveling it is perfect idea to use a camper trailer. With the help of such camper trailer, it is very easy to go for a short trip; as such recreational vehicle is preferred for a few days trip like a weekend get together.

Apart from convenience, it provides ample protection and security for the people who travel. They cannot be easily accessed by any of the wild animals while on the camp site or park. The protection and the security of the people traveling are very important. Hence it would be a very good decision to use such campo trailers, as it fulfills the requirements of a worry-free trip. The recreational vehicles have become more popular in many countries, as people prefer to get away from their stressful work environment. The advantage of using a RV is that you can cook your own meal, as you have all the utensils, refrigerator, cooking stove, oven etc.

Apart from this, you also get to sleep in a comfortable bed and feel like, at home. Another important advantage of an RV is that, it saves a lot of money for you. You could save hundreds of dollars annually from dining out and from hotel bills. You could either opt for a brand new RV or the used RV, based on your needs and preferences. You could as well rent out the same in some of the major cities and tourist spots.

Important Points to Ponder Before Buying a Health Insurance Plan

A health insurance plan is an essential part of financial planning in this era of skyrocketing medical costs. Medical inflation has been aggravating at its full spree which makes it all the more important to buy a Health Insurance plan which could sponsor the hospitalization and medical treatment bills or expenses.

It is important to evaluate and look for the following parameters to get a best health plan for you and your family.

1. Check for the Waiting Period Clause

You must be feeling care free after taking an insurance, but your health insurance comes with a waiting period clause for specific conditions. There is an initial period clause which says that any hospitalization claim will not be admissible in first 30 days of the policy commencement apart from accidental hospitalization. The pre-existing diseases or conditions are also not covered immediately after you purchase a policy. There is a waiting period ranging from 2 years to 4 years as per the plan conditions in the industry. Also, there are certain surgeries and treatments like hernia, cataract, joint replacement, etc. which can be treated after a specific waiting period of 1 or 2 years.

So,it is important to check the waiting period clause before you finalize the health plan.

2. Check for Sublimits

There are certain capping or sublimits in your health plan which says that the specific kind of expenses are paid by the insurance company upto a specific limit and beyond that the insured or customer has to bear them at his own. For example: Room rent charges are capped on per day basis for different health plans. Some health plans also come with a mandatory co-pay where the portion of the admissible claim is to be borne by the insured and the remaining is paid by the insurance company.

Check for the sublimits in your health plan to avoid any last minute surprises at the time of claim.

3. Check for Network Hospitals

The insurance companies offering health plans have certain empaneled network hospitals with whom they have a tie up. Any hospitalization or treatment taken in the mentioned or specified network hospital list is done on the cashless basis subject to policy conditions.

Check for the list of network hospitals of insurance company and ensure you have network hospitals of the insurer near your place of residence in case of any emergency hospitalization. Also, a treatment in non-network hospital may not offer cashless treatment and some insurers have a co-pay clause if you take a treatment in non-network hospital.

4. Check for the Claim Process

Different insurance companies have different claim procedures. Some settle or administer claims through Third Party Administrators (TPA’s) and some have their own in house claim settlement unit to foster quick and hassle free claim processing. Also, check the claim settlement ratio of the insurer you intend to buy a health plan from to have a clear picture on the number of claims settled by the insurer.

It is important to have a handy information on claims procedure to have a smooth and hassle free treatment in the times of hospitalization.

5. Compare & Buy Online

It is important to take a right buying decision which can be done by comparing the available health insurance plans online. You can compare the price, key features, policy benefits, value added benefits, eligibility, exclusions, etc. of multiple health insurance plans to make a right informed choice of your own without any interference of the agents. Arthritis and Nutrition

Arthritis affects almost one in every five people in the United States. Arthritis is the broad term for hundreds of disorders that involve the joints. The two main types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They each damage the joints in different ways. The most common signs and symptoms of arthritis could be pain, stiffness, swelling, redness, and decreases range of motion depending on the type you have. Most people are not aware that choosing healthy foods can tremendously improve the way they feel.

Many people enjoy food so much that they may not realize that what they are putting into their systems can cause inflammation in their bodies. Arthritis is a disease of inflammation so those with arthritis should focus on finding the anti-inflammatory foods they like. Daily exercise and losing weight (if overweight) will help alleviate the stress on the joints. It will also help in lowering the level of inflammation in the body. Nutrition is key! It is always a good idea to discuss a new diet with a professional.

You can fight arthritis with foods that help reduce some aspect of inflammation; Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, rainbow trout, Pacific oysters, flaxseed and walnuts), Extra-virgin olive oil (use when cooking), Antioxidants (sweet peppers, oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, pineapple, lemons, broccoli, cantaloupe, mangos, tuna, crab, tilapia, whole-wheat pasta, lean beef, cod, shrimp, turkey, sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, apricots, spinach, onions, cherry tomatoes, blueberries, elderberries and apples), and Spices (ginger and turmeric) are among some that are known to help.

Inflammation irritates arthritic joints, causing the tissues to swell and become inflamed. Eating anti-inflammatory foods may reduce swelling, but it’s also important to know about the foods that can trigger painful inflammation. Stay away from; fried foods, sodas, refined carbs, lard, processed meats, refined oils, salts, sugars, dairy products, simple carbs, processed foods, saturated fat, trans fat, alcohol, tobacco, white rice, white flour, white bread, pasta, pastries etc.

Maintaining a healthy diet can be done by eliminating or reducing inflammatory foods. Start by reading the ingredient labels and look for indicated levels of saturated and trans fats. Compare different product brands to see which ones have lower levels of unhealthy fats and sugars. Switch to natural cooking oils like olive or avocado oil. Avoid deep fried foods or ones that have been cooked at high temperatures. Choose more low fat and trans fat-free options when buying packaged foods. Add more omega-3 fatty acids and reduce omega-6 fatty acids. Finally eat as close to natural as possible by consuming less prepackaged and processed foods.

If you have arthritis, it is important to find the foods that make you feel better. These food suggestions are guideline and not a one size fits all. Foods that cause joint pain for one person may not cause the same joint pain for the next person. Paying attention to what you are consuming can change the way you feel drastically. Stay away from the foods that cause inflammation for you and find the anti-inflammatory foods that you like! And don’t forget to exercise!

How to Reuse Plastic Bags

Using reusable bags has caught on with grocery stores across the country, but many other types of businesses are slow to catch on. At some point or another, you’ll most likely be taking a plastic bag from some type of store. When you accumulate plastic bags, how can you reuse them?

Plastic bags became popular because they are a cheap, affordable way to bag groceries and goods. The bag could be thrown away after a single use. While it’s convenient in theory, disposable plastic bags have grave consequences for the environment. A single plastic bag will never disappear. Unlike other materials, plastic doesn’t biodegrade, it simply breaks apart into smaller pieces of plastic (which is actually far worse than larger pieces because they can’t be collected).

Plastic bags:

  • Never biodegrade.
  • Cause animals to suffocate and die.
  • Use fossil fuels to create them, increasing our dependence on foreign oil.
  • Are an eyesore and get caught on car antennas, mufflers, and twisted into engines

Plastic grocery bags can first of all be recycled. Many grocery stores will accept plastic bags to be recycled (usually you’ll find the receptacle near the entrance or near the can redemption center).

Recycling Plastic Bags vs. Reusing Plastic Bags

Recycling almost always uses more energy than reusing. By reusing, you’ll be giving the product a second life. When your recycle something, you’ll be using energy to turn that product into something else, which can use energy and produce emissions.

Five Reasons You Should Bring Your Own Bag

Plastic has a hugely negative effect on the environment, and also on our society. The cons far outweigh the positives of these disposable nuisances. Here are a few reasons you should consider switching to reusable bags instead of plastic:

  1. Bringing your own bag means you’ll be carrying less to and fro. Most reusable bags hold far more than traditional disposable bags. Less trips back and forth from the car!
  2. Each time you use your own bag, you’ll get a small credit back from grocery stores. It’s usually between 5 and 10 cents, which can add up over time.
  3. Using your own bag reduces our dependence on foreign oil. Plastic uses fossil fuels, which are largely found in countries that don’t have the best intentions Western World. Cast your vote for locally made reusable bags instead.
  4. You won’t have to worry about throwing away, recycling, or reusing your disposable bags. By reusing your own bags, you’ll have less clutter and less trash.
  5. You’ll be sending a green message to your children. When they see you using your own bags, they’ll take notice and want to do the same in their lives.
  6. If you’d like to reuse your plastic bags, they have hundreds of uses.
Ways to Reuse Your Plastic Bags

    • One of the most popular ways to reuse plastic bags is to use them as a trash bag.
    • Place them in small trash barrels in the bathroom, bedrooms, cellar, and near the cat’s litter box.
    • Another popular use for them is to use them as doggy poop bags. If you’re going out for a walk, bring along a couple of these bags.

  7. You can also reuse plastic bags as packaging. If you’re shipping out an item on eBay or shipping something to a friend, the bags can act as a cushion, much like packing peanuts, if you use enough of them.
  8. Keep a plastic bag in your car to contain all of the trash that accumulates in your car. Then, simply tie off, throw away, and use another bag.
  9. Donate your plastic bags to a local thrift store or charity. These prevents them from having to buy brand new bags.
  10. Post an ad on Craigslist for your bags. A local business may want to use them (you can’t beat free!).
  11. Use your bag to contain messy foods and leftovers that might otherwise leave spills. This is especially useful with soups and liquids.
  12. Think of things that you traditionally would use plastic for and replace them with your grocery bags. If you usually put your lawn leaves in trash bags, save up your bigger shopping bags and put the leaves in there instead.
  13. Wrap a bag around bags of flour, sugar, and other messy baking ingredients. This can help contain the mess and make for an easier clean up.

Globalization And Its Relation To Global Warming

Many individuals are aware of the term global warming. Whether they hear about it from the news, or just personally witness the unusual climate changes occurring around them, they encounter small impacts of global warming daily. However, most do not understand just how serious of an issue global warming actually is. When talking about global warming, scientists are speaking of the global warming emissions that are on a constant rise. These emissions cause various problems. One of the problems is global sea levels increasing. Since 1880, the sea level has increased 8 inches (Global Warming Impacts). While this may not seem like a great amount, this increase causes a higher risk of flooding to coastal and low-lying properties.

Another problem is rising temperatures. Global warming emissions destroy the protective barrier between the earth’s surface and the intense heat given off by the sun. These increasing temperatures cause forests to be hotter and drier for longer periods of time. This then results in a longer forest fire season for the western United States. Also, it can lead to increased drought periods in many parts of the world. This not only limits the drinking water supply, which people need to live and survive, but it destroys crops that don’t get an adequate amount of water. It also can put an increased pressure on pumping the ground water supply, since there is little to no rain water to replenish it.

Most people, including myself, enjoy watching the seasons change. However, with the increasing global warming conditions, the seasons are changing more rapidly and the fall and winter months are being cut shorter in length. According to the article Global Warming Impacts, spring arrives on average 10 days earlier in the northern hemisphere then it used to (Global Warming Impacts). This is causing the snow to melt more rapidly and raise the water levels in the oceans and seas. With the cold months cut shorter, there is less time for the cold weather to regulate viruses. For instance, mosquito’s carry many types of blood viruses, such as Zika. Without the cold winter months, mosquitoes are not controlled as they should be, and it is more likely for these viruses to spread.

Now that some of the global warming effects have been discussed in greater length, we need to understand what causes these effects. Most people know that it can be caused by an unnatural rise in carbon monoxide emissions or other hazardous materials being disposed of improperly. However, what they may not know is that globalization is a leading cause in the rise of global warming emissions. Globalization is the act of businesses operating on a worldwide spectrum, and is possible through the implementation of trade agreements. While this may be beneficial for the business or company due to expansion, and increasing profits, most of the time it is not beneficial to help on cutting back on global warming. There are different ways as to how, but all-in-all it leads to an unnatural increase in carbon monoxide emissions.

One way this is possible is through transportation. With businesses operating on a global level there is more demand for travel and transportation. If the business is a service business, some of the time the companies must have employees travel from one location to another for various reasons. These employees normally travel by use of trains, planes, buses or automobiles. All the listed modes of transportation for travel give off carbon monoxide emissions, through the use of gas or diesel, which are types of fossil fuels. More common, however, is for production businesses and companies to transport goods or products. They may transport whole products to be sold through retailers or parts of products for production to be completed of the whole product. Goods and products are typically transported with the use of boats, airplanes, trucks, and sometimes trains. Once again, all of these types of transportation give off the harmful emissions (OECD (2013).

Another way this is possible is through politics. Since globalization means that businesses operate in multiple countries, they are able to work around global warming regulations to cut costs. Many production businesses produce some type of waste. This waste could be hazardous or it could just be something that decomposes over time. Regardless of what type it is, most waste gives off carbon monoxide emissions. Along with this, different countries have different regulations in an effort to cut back on global warming effects, although some countries regulations are stricter than others. For example, the regulations could be how to dispose of the waste or how much they are able to dispose of in a given period of time. It could also be how much emissions they are able to release into the atmosphere for industrial plant companies. Many global companies look at these regulations and go to the areas that have less strict regulations to help cut costs of disposal and not have to find another alternative for the disposal of their waste. This then allows the business to pollute more than they should be able to and causes carbon monoxide emissions to increase greatly (OECD (2013).

Through globalization, companies are trying to expand their business and increase profits by cutting costs. However, globalization is costing more than it is worth with the negative effects that it produces on global warming. Globalization gives a direct correlation to increasing carbon monoxide levels in the atmosphere, which in turn leads to the negative effects of things such as rising temperatures. While globalization can have benefits to businesses and the environment in other ways, we must be mindful and conservative of its impact. Global warming is on a continuous rise and globalization will continue to effect it.

Family Relationships Under Fire

Lessons from the Front Line

I sat glued to the news conference as three wounded soldiers – Marine Lance Corporal Joshua Menard, Army Staff Sergeant James Villafane, and Army Sergeant Charles Horgan – recalled their experiences of coming under fire from Iraqi troops in civil dress at the city of Nassiriya. Villafane and Horgan told about being stuck by an incoming missile.
As I watched, I, too, was stuck … by the similarities between their experiences on the battlefield and those of stressed-out families, "under fire." Listen and learn from their experiences.

Menard said, "We were very surprised." We were told that when we were going through Nassiriya that we would see little to no resistance. "They were not rolling over like we thought they would."
Realistically expect and prepare for the inevitable challenges your family will face. "Prepare for the worst," while guarding the positive attitudes that "create the best."

Villafane commented, "The amount of resistance, some of it I do not understand. I mean, we're there to help them to get them out of the statute." It was a shock that they would actually do that, given the treatment We try to give them. We try to treat them fairly. "
Know this! You can be misunderstood by family members, even when you have the best of intentions and are trying your best. Parents, it takes courage to make wise, yet unpopular decisions.
On the other hand, "meaning well" can not substitute for "doing well." Check your actions, being willing to openly consider what it's like to be on the other side of you.

A group of Iraqi soldiers dressed in the civil robes of nomad Bedoins opened fire on Menard as he and six other Marines approached them on a bridge in Nassiriya. Military enemies, pretending to be harmless.
Even more appalling was the account of the American soldier who allegedly pulled the grenade that killed and injured people in his own troop. Yet, we've lost our sensitivity to the shock of similar responsibilities in our own families … daily "grenades" of hurtful words and destructive actions.
"Out there", there are so many enemies to the wellbeing of family members. How can we hope to combat those if we spend our time fighting within our own ranks? What can you do today to mend family rifts?

Sergeant Horgan told about how he worked to stay calm, though he had just been wounded by the enemy missile. He said that he was grateful that "training kicks in" and that he was able not to panic. "My foot may be gone, but I gotta move."
When you are faced with an unexpected and disturbing challenge in your family, do not panic, reacting impulsively. Seek help if necessary. Do not say or do things that make the situation worse in the long run.
Stop … think … plan … then act.

The way these well-trained, courageous soldiers behaved under fire is, to me, the greatest of our lessons in family teamwork. Listen in, and examine your own habits and actions.

Horgan, whose right leg and foot were ripped open when he was blown from his gunning position, described his thoughts when he saw the incoming miss: "Oh, my God, I'm gonna die." I gotta warn my buddies. "

Villafane quipped, "It's not being shot at that bad. It's being shot that really sucks!" (Can you refer to that?) Despite the horror of what they had experienced, the three wounded men all said that they felt a sense of guilt about leaving friends behind in Iraq. Horgan told reporters, "I'm relieved that I'm out … Nobody can be shot and say, 'Wow, I really want to go back out there. But I'm kind of sad that I'm not with the guys who protected me. My friends protected me when I needed them. I joined to serve my country. But when I was there, I was fighting to protect my friends.

Santa Monica and Venice Beaches

A stroll in Santa Monica will be a highlight of your trip in California. The neighborhood is truly charming, the atmosphere is excellent, the scenery is beautiful and the former homes of the stars are fascinating. There are two walks not to miss – the 3rd Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier.

The 3rd Street Promenade is a very romantic and very popular pedestrian street. This is the heart of the city of Santa Monica. The evenings and the weekends are particularly lively with many musicians and street performers. The 3rd Street Promenade is lined by restaurants and shops, often very nice, which stay open late. There are also many bars, caf├ęs and cinemas nearby.

In the ocean, the Santa Monica Pier is a long wooden jetty which was completed in 1921. It is the oldest marina in the American West. Today, the Santa Monica Pier is packed with restaurants, shops and a fun fair which will delight children. The carousel is well known in film, and it dates from 1922. The walk along the beach should absolutely go through here, if only for the atmosphere. The street performers animate the dock music. With a little luck, you can even see authentic Californian surfers listening to the music of the Beach Boys!

Santa Monica is located west of the city, north of the airport. To get there you can take the Santa Monica Freeway. The bike path along the beach is several kilometers long and can take you to Venice Beach.

Venice Beach is together with Malibu Beach, the most famous film with its long track for bikes and rollerblades. Yes, Venice is one of the few neighborhoods in Los Angeles that is closed to motor vehicles. It is there before the ideal place to unwind and enjoy the incredible atmosphere of the place.

Initially, Venice was a small resort. After a trip to Venice in the early twenty century, the wealthy property owner decided to make this neighborhood the Venice California. He then undertook the construction of canals and buildings recalling the architecture of the city of Doges. Poorly designed, the canals were filled 20 years later, but the district retained the name of Venice.

The Venice neighborhood is particularly well known for being the Mecca of the hippie movement in Los Angeles. Jim Morrison specifically enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of this neighborhood and this is where the legendary group the Doors was formed. Today, traces of that era are still treated in Venice. Indeed, the days attract many street artists, old hippies and fringe that animate the neighborhood.

Neverheless, Venice is not nearly as cool as in the 1960s. It is strongly recommended not to visit the area after nightfall. At this time, the area belongs to the gang. Attacks are many, but rest assured, there is nothing to fear during the day. However, the area is much protected, as tourism requires.

Today, Venice is a permanent show where street performers entertain passersby in a very friendly atmosphere. We find musicians, speakers, dancers, jugglers, and other fire-eaters. The attractions of Venice also pass through the small stands of exotic products and the huge murals that adorn the area. Do not forget the beautiful women passing by and the roller body men who show off their muscles in the gym outdoors … The whole is a multifaceted entertainment and contrasting assembly, so representative of America.

Off-Campus Housing: How to Convince Your Parents

Many colleges have a requirement that freshmen spend their first year in the dorms. Beyond that, most universities are happy to allow their students to move into off-campus housing if they prefer. Of course, many students choose to live in the dorms the entire time. Others, however, crave a bit more freedom. If this is you and you aren’t paying your own bills, you’ll need to persuade your parents that it is a good idea. Easier said than done, but there are some compelling arguments for moving into your own place. Here are some of them.

Decreased Distractions

If you’re to convince your parents that you should be able to move into off-campus housing, you’re going to have to make arguments they will respond to. Giving them arguments about increased freedom to party and relaxed rules about having the opposite sex sleep over are unlikely to make your case. But if you hammer the point about decreased distractions, you might get somewhere. And it’s true. Your parents may have forgotten, but the dorms are often one big non-stop party. It can be difficult to remain glued to your studies when there are constant activities begging for your attention.

Less Expensive

This is the argument that is going to seal the deal in many cases. Dorms are expensive. Because they are wrapped into the total cost of tuition, it can be easy to miss it, but you’ll notice when it comes off the bill. While you can certainly find off-campus housing that is even pricier than the dorms, you will easily find an apartment that costs much less. For that decreased price, you’ll get thicker walls, more privacy, and a chance to start living like an adult. These things may not matter much to your parents, but the benefit to their checkbook may be persuasion enough.

Your Credit

It can be tough to find your financial footing in the world after graduation. Students who are accustomed to their parents paying for everything find themselves not only having to suddenly cope with their own bills, but faced with the prospect of getting credit and loans without any credit history on which to rely. This can be difficult, to say the least. If you get an apartment in your own name, however, you can start building up that credit score. This will come in handy when you want to buy a car or a house in the future. If your parents don’t relish the idea of co-signing on your loans in the future, this could be an argument for off-campus housing they can appreciate.
