Think and Grow Rich Review

Think and Grow Rich should be required reading for all entrepreneurs. Although it was originally published in 1937, a quick reread shows that its philosophy has stood the test of time. The content of this book is just as relevant today as it was when it was published near the end of the Great Depression. “Think and Grow Rich” was inspired by Andrew Carnegie, one of the wealthiest individuals in the world at the time, who disclosed his formula of personal success to Napoleon Hill. Hill went on to interview more than 500 very wealthy men do discover their personal secrets and philosophies of success. From his research, Hill went on to identify the similarities in the philosophies of these magnates and assemble the ultimate “what-to-do” and “how-to-do-it” manual for personal achievement.

The book is not only for those who want to achieve financial success, but for anyone who needs a breakthrough in order to achieve a personal accomplishment, whether it is financial, technical, physical, mental, emotional, or even habitual. One of my favorite passages of “Think and Grow Rich”, that I immediately committed to memory upon reading, is taken from the second chapter entitled “Desire, The Starting Point of All Achievement, The First Step Toward Riches” Hill states, “Every human who reaches the age of understanding of the purpose of money wishes for it. Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches, with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.” Hill then goes on to list the six ways to turn desires into gold. It was at that point that I was immediately hooked, not only because of his writing style, but because every chapter was teeming with lists and how-to’s on various topics of achievement and success.

This is not to say that Think and Grow Rich is simply a book of lists. On the contrary, the lists are usually generalized summaries of the preceding passages, and they typically paraphrase and present the moral or lesson of the story of an individual or group who was able to accomplish a seemingly impossible task by 1) taking control of their mindset, 2) creating a definite plan, 3) persisting until success, and 4) not accepting failure as an option. As an example, in the chapter on Desire, before presenting the six ways to turn desire into gold (or more symbolically, riches) Hill tells the story of Edwin C. Barnes. Barnes was a man who at one point in his life would be considered a tramp by any reasonable person’s standards, yet through a burning desire and definite plan, created a partnership with Thomas Edison five years after deciding that was his goal.

As he revealed how he accomplished this feat he stated, “There is but one thing in this world that I am determined to have, and that is a business association with Thomas A. Edison. I will burn all bridges behind me, and stake my entire future on my ability to get what I want.” It was through this dogged determination he went from a man who a) did not personally know Thomas Edison and b) did not have enough money to pay railroad fare to Orange, New Jersey, to a partner of Edison’s as the chief distributor and marketer of the Edison Dictating Machine, which was a new office device Edison had recently perfected. Think and Grow Rich is the result of over 20 years of research by Napoleon Hill, who studied and interviewed over 500 of the wealthiest individuals in the world in order to learn their secrets to obtaining financial success. The list of subjects reads like a Who’s Who of the Industrial Revolution and Political Landscape of the early twentieth century.

Those that have read “Think and Grow Rich” in the past (before 2004) will be pleased to learn that the book is now being published in unabridged format, presenting a higher fidelity of Mr. Hill’s original writing and including a lot of material and whole sections that had not been previously released in the Fawcett Crest Version that was published in 1960. I have not yet read this latest edition, having read the Fawcett Crest Edition several times, however I understand it to be very favorably received. This Tribeca Books Original Classic Edition is in my queue of Kindle books to read in order to glean even more nuggets from Mr. Hill that may have not been included in the Fawcett Crest Edition. Whether you have never picked up Napoleon Hill’s writings, or you are due for a reread like I am, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of “Think and Grow Rich.”

A Few Tips to Effective Golf Practice

It does not matter if you play baseball, hockey, soccer, tennis, you get a great deal of satisfaction when strike the ball solidly. Making solid contact with the ball is even more important in golf, where the slightest mishit can cause the ball to go anywhere but where you want it to go.

As with anything that you want to be good at, consistent ball striking in golf requires practice, practice and more practice.

Although you may not believe it, right after you finish a round is the best time to practice. All of the mistakes that you made during your time on the golf course are fresh in your mind and your body is still warm and ready to go. If you do not take the time to work on the shots that give you the most trouble means that your game will continue to suffer.

One of the keys to getting the most out of your practice is to create 'real' situations. Ideally, you want to mirror what happened during your round.

Work on hitting golf balls from every type of bad lie you can recreate. If you spend an extra 20 or 30 minutes after a round practicing one or two of those errant shots, you will be able to make adjustments that will translate to better play the next time you are out on the course.

Another method you can use to prepare for your next round is to visualize a round of golf during lunch break, on your way to or home from work.

Picture yourself on your home course stepping up to the first tee and striking the ball down the center of the fairway. Get into the flow of your round in your mind and see yourself hitting each shot perfectly. Visualize your body flowing tension through each shot.

If you know anything about Olympic athletes, then you know that much of their practice is visualization. Do not get me wrong, they spend many hours practicing the physically, but before they start an event, they spend time seeing themselves perform flawlessly.

When you are practicing, do not just hit golf balls, take the time to visualize what you want the ball to do. Take a break between swings and picture your next swing as if you were hitting a shot on the golf course.

This will help you avoid mental and physical exhaustion. Use the time to process what you've learned or accomplished. Remember, you're not out there to hit a hundred of shots. Instead you are trying to hit 20-30 solid shots. Rather than shagging a large bucket of balls and just pounding shots, get a small bucket and focus on hitting the sweet spot with each swing.

Here is a great golf swing practice tip:

Place two tees a couple of inches apart in the ground.

Use your favorite iron, I like to use a shooter iron for this.

Start with partial swings and work your way up to full swings as you get better at avoiding the tees. Spend some time doing this and you will soon be hitting the ball more solidly. The best part is, you can do this in your backyard.

When you hit that perfect shot, do not forget how it feels. Burn that feeling into your head and internalize it. I know from experience that the feeling is effortless and there is nothing like it.

Evil: The Darkside of Human Nature And Its Nurture

Is it nature or nurture in the chaser of the conjecture? Who knows? After decades of debate and controversy, no one has any definitive answers as to a single causative factor relative to the malevolence of human activities. There are of course various schools of thought, and answers depend on your particular point of view.

Such is the state of the duality of the human species, because for some of us it is both, and much more. Throughout the ages, there are numerous points of reference that testify to the salacious proclivity people have for killing. To unleash the monsters from the Id, so to speak, is of unique potentially for everyone.

As such, evil is a term some use to indicate the opposite of doing the good, the correct and the decently right thing for oneself and for others. By connection, such also concerns exercising lawful conduct. As used here for the moment, its relevance pertains to the manifestations that result in criminal behavior.

Evil is choosing intentionally to commit selfish inflictions upon others, including other life forms, as well as the environment. Also, reference is constructed with the inclusive ramifications of committing injuries upon people, places and things contrary to public law. Illicit behaviors that violate duly constituted sanctions are viewed as purposeful, planned and selfishly motivated incidents.

Regardless of upbringing history, parental guidance or lack thereof, poverty, abusive relationships, socio-economic inequities, etc., there are no excuses for malevolent behaviors. Nonetheless, others will differ as to the mitigations and argue a variety of rationalizations. Regardless, evil is a matter of self-centered desire for personal gain. With malice aforethought and premeditation, one calculates maliciousness.

The appearance, display or exhibition of any semblance of evil is expressed in diverse manners. From seemingly benign pottery bickering over nonsense, to atrocities of war, human evil know no limits. By various contrivances and collusions, across the devolving regression of humankind, intentional acts are directed toward selfish appeasements. Gratification, from hedonistic collaborations of thought and perpetration, constitute deliberate and willful instigations. Such things are within the individual and regard no excuses for antisocial antics by explanation of simplistic externality.

Yet, many will collude in the conspiratorial to trump a range of mitigations to exonerate vicariously the malicious initiations human execute. There are no alibis or excusatory rationalizations that justify humanity’s wickedness. The human species has had long enough to get beyond the degradation they enjoy committing. In addition, that is a play on words isn’t it, “humanity”. As if the mirror of humankind might spawn the vast reaches of charity and goodwill, although a few examples might testify.

People enact vile actions toward others for personal gain, and span the social spectrum from the impoverished to the wealthy elitists. Power, control and domination of others are reflective consequences of thoughtful actions. By not recognizing the potentiality of malevolent behaviors on the part of everyone, the human species is doomed to its eventual demise. Extinction is the result of a failure to transform to higher ascendency by mature insightful enlightenment as a more differentiated and evolved life form.

Good people, as one might assume and assumptions are sometimes faulty, can translate upright intentions into horrendous carnage. Frequently, so called “goodness” have disastrous consequences when coupled with lofty notions of changing others to fit a particular preconceived mold. This might be exemplified by the egocentric efforts of one person perpetually trying to changes another and failing each to achieve the ideal creation. One who seeks to rescue the “victim” of their own maladaptive contrivances meets the folly of failure by the counterproductive actions of the other.

Likewise, such considerations apply to countries whose self-righteous “leaders” assert they want to make the world safe for “democracy”. Men and women are subsequently committed to war, while the alleged leadership that put them in hostile foreign places remains safely secure. For those advocating war against another, perhaps they should be the first to go, and lead the charge in opposition to the perceived evil.

In response to such assertions, one must ask the depth of such superficiality, hypocrisy, and probability of selfishness in hidden agendas. Evil is in all aspects of human thinking, but remains controlled to a certain point. In the duality of human nature, the struggle continues beyond the antediluvian emergence to the present day. As in the studies of a few, as what might be called the “demonic effect”, given the temptation of satiating particular desires, everyone is fully capable of the most heinous actions imaginable. In 200,000 years, what has changed in the nature of people?

Primarily, the point of reference here is that evil is used to reflect the wickedness people do to each other and not things like natural disasters, pain and suffering from illness, and so forth, including metaphysical illusions to the occult. Weather and related environmental conditions are not relevant to this particular aspect of illicit human activities. However, where people, groups and organizations exploit natural resources for personal gain, similarly the nature of evil is at work.

Fundamentally, humans are flawed and imperfect, as finite physicality and perhaps mental capacity, will attest over time. People continue to carry out the selectivity of their self-centered inclinations for which others suffer. From agribusiness collusions in corporate corruption and social network stalking and bullying, to terroristic complicities of nation-state atrocities, human beings inflict a wide range of divisiveness. Diverse personalities carry out divergent pursuits over a range of competing ideologies.

In a kind of chess game, that is a mental gambit bent on maximizing self-gratification by personal and private proclivity, or perhaps group orientation, an individual pursues each move by calculated effort. It is a seduction to feeling better about oneself, the gainful enrichment, and the exhilaration of achievement, in the aftermath of the competitiveness. One gets what one wants in spite of the other’s needs.

By way of manipulations, for the amative expectation of his or her position relative to another, motion is for the benefit of the mover. And, the commotion may result in “acts of evil” inflicted beyond the basic requirements of a normative sense of civility. Here again, this is suggested to be the “darkside” of human behavior through various types of communal commotions. The perpetrator, many seemingly harmless and “normal”, harbors the thinking processes conducive to wicked adversarial endeavors.

The world as a “chess board” is a willful interactive process of out maneuvering another. For the perpetrator, the energies focus on manipulations of various sorts, in order to satisfy wants and desires. Whether by passive not so noticeable movements or aggressive up close in your face confrontations, the purposeful calamity stems for internal evilness. It is evidenced by outright acts of abusive name-calling, vandalistic stupidity, or chilling covert intentions for torture and murder. People are seen the pawns for self-aggrandizement. By childish showmanship, for attention and validation, self-promotion reflects foolishness that often culminates in harm to others.

Rather than expend the energetic eccentricities of individuality toward an enhanced and enlightened life form, the stagnant ones persist in self-destructive instigations. As perceptions purpose to narrow the selfish nurturing satiations of infantile reassurance, a person more often than not chooses the pleasurable rewards, rather than the more difficult challenges of learning then insists upon change.

While subjective cultivation of personal selectivity insists upon poor quality decision making, the amative inclinations of particular personality claim the arrogance of that which nurtures private proclivities. Answers to perplexing confrontations are easily encapsulated with simplistic solutions that do not fully explain natural complexity. By avoiding the centrality of continual harmonious integration, demise is ensured.

By one’s failure to embrace the quest of self-evolution for enlightened transformation, the easier walk with life is less cumbersome and laborious. Plotting, scheming and analyzing the probable attainment of short-term gain, with minimal risk and investment, assured of high return, he or she devolves to the carnality of the hunt. Effort is primal and existence is static, as wisdom is replaced by emotion.

With all things being answered without challenge, difficulty, pain or failure, the herded assemblies remove themselves from the persistence of advancing the species. History fades and present predicaments mirror the forgotten calamities of selfishly arrogant perpetrations in human degradation. As human nature changes little over time, the same disasters continue, undeterred by a seemingly intelligent species.

While some would advocate that I.Q.’s of post-modern samplings have risen, the darkside of the question relates to the relevance of the reality in profound transformative wisdom. At least the sampled groupings appear to know how to answer questions on of a formatted inquiry. Yet, the problems of the pre-apocalyptic planetary civilization continue. There are many examples of humans doing bad things to each other.

In another survey of human debauchery, some suggest a “safer” global environment, as homicidal actions flat-line and decrease. A lull in the “hunting” contests of human “warfare” may be short-lived, as in the life span of humankind, while an upsurge may be around the next corner. Then again, what if adaptations of selfishness find alternatives? With cyberspace, the World Wide Web, mass communications, social networking, etc., there are other insidious ways to injury fellow beings.

One does not need physically to kill another to do harm. For the amative salaciousness of quenching desires to control life and defeat death ideations, a person can inflict all types of injurious actions. From cultic collusions to political piracy, and corporate complicity, vandalizing animosity can be of varied forms. In nurture of self-deception, a person relishes in the superficiality of self-reflection. Daily, an individual sees that other self in the looking glass of illusions and pretenses to self-righteousness.

Anyone is fully capable by carnal influence, of the easy acceptance of lies he or she tells oneself. When that is done, and often it is, the process of magical thinking can loom to enormous proportions. Where a proposition is made to assert a falsehood, as in a dogmatic belief system, dangers creep close in non-acceptance by others. The various religious beliefs around the world are a testimony to such potentiality.

Given a range of ideological projections, and the power of language, trouble free believability is not far behind. Many easily accept simplistic trouble free assertions of what someone might say. Yet, few understand what was actually said. For the vast majority of people, a limited number, a minority of such groupings, does anyone actually employ critical thinking applications. Few invoke the troubling prospects of thinking by analytic reflection. A template, a basic profile, is preferred over the facts.

To go deeper, more insightful, in an effort toward enlightenment is laborious, and rife with the animosity of others. Fearing the loss of status quo stability, reactionary and emotional intolerance takes on varied means of retribution. By acting neither stupid nor misinformed, seemingly intelligent people who ought to know better believe in foolish things. By doing so, evil is encouraged at various level of communal conformity.

Most people are very fearful in facing the inner demonic forms of their dysfunctions. As such, they willingly embrace obligations of perceived cultural necessities for normality in maintaining a fictitious state of affairs. Fear grips the senses in the prospect of surviving in a failing culture, faltering governments, social collapse, and moral decline. Likewise, complicity in fostering the deterioration intellectual ascendancy toward hastens the devolution of humanity toward eventual demise. With such dereliction of societal responsibility to mature, grow wise, and renovate thinking, other more disastrous choices are made. Self-evolution is a frightening prospect because it means a more liberated differentiated lifestyle, beyond debasing self-centeredness.

From cerebral manifestations to real life devastations, an evil disposition to do harm is lurking in the shadows of human thinking. Humans will not change, except for the daring few, to achieve the gratifications they feel entitled. For the one contemplating a criminal transgression, as opposed to a more benign social contemplation, the energy applied to crossing the line of civility is readily available. Predictability as to potentiality is beyond our limited human capacity at this juncture of history. By seeming to understand, perhaps maybe comprehend the motivations of people, we think we might change humankind for the betterment of all planetary life forms. That expresses our arrogance.

Likewise, in relation to criminality, which manifests in many diverse forms, prediction is nothing more guesswork. Take the popularity of so called “criminal profiling”, or “behavioral analysis” for instance. Many, especially a lot who ought to know better, believe in their pretentious to gullibility, that one might know the unknown perpetrator by pretending to “read” the “signature” of the crime scene. While that works within the time slot of a televisions drama, with time out for commercial messages, a case can be easily solved by applying a simplistic template to the diversity of human behavior.

In the real world of human nature, that is an illusion. Such is the myth, magic and metaphor of fiction claimed as reality and the expressiveness of smug piety. We confuse and confound the murkiness of cause and effect into a fabrication of lore, legend and fairy tale. As hope springs eternal, the assurance of subjective validation finds the “evidence” needed to substantiate our cognitive bias. In the process, we contrive the foolishness of inferential fallacies and race to resurrect misguided hasty generalizations. It is the sleight of hand and legerdemain of the smoke and mirrors by which we deceive ourselves. For the amative feel of immediate gratification, anything is possible.

When the line is crossed, others will suffer. It is by will and by choice, from the basis of a hedonistically calculated perspective. The world is but a matter of human competitiveness, survival orientation, by which each expresses his degree of power, control and domination, or the lack thereof. Personal gain is at the core of the thinking processes. Given the conditions conducive to the selectivity of acquisition, accepted rules can be suspended, manipulated or otherwise exploited. Since most people do not change willingly over time, and prefer a more “juvenile” or adolescent approach to living, immaturity can be played out in very destructive ways.

In the nature of human evil, actions can speak out in a number of ways. The manifestations do not have to be outright horrific. Such activities can be very subtle. By abuse in relationships, blowing up a subway, allowing impoverished conditions for the sake of greed and corruption, hacking a database, or stealing parts of an economic system, as well as avoiding accountability for communal responsibilities in public office. For self-indulgent purposes, people can suspend empathy, avoid productive decision-making and prefer illicit tasks to more productive actions.

With one’s personal belief system fixed in place, with little or no alteration over time, odds are that person will not change for the better. Any threat to such inner prejudice, or bias, will be met with hostilities across a multifaceted hostile spectrum. Malevolence is expressed in a belief system that translates thinking into action. Religion is a good example in a variety of ways. With a self-focused conception, along with a fixation on a personal unbending moral perspective, steeped in an illusion of dogma, and fallacies of reasoning, a person is fully capable of antagonistic behaviors.

Additionally, in one’s hypocrisy, it is easy to ignore in oneself what is presumably observed in others. By an individual’s seduction to his or her own point of view, he or she will fight to defend that ideological position no matter what. Emotional reactivity, absent the facts, purposely overlooks the relevance of evidentiary considerations. Reliable evidence in proof to the contrary, will be seen as threatening. In self-deception, given the avoidance of a self-evolving and transforming ascendency, many will allow the recognition of both individual and group regression. Along with that comes the assertion of particular believability where evidentiary artifacts are absent.

As such, the nature of evil and its nurture encompass many aspects of human interactivity. None of these things is good for humankind to evolve productively as a more transformative species. In the scope of criminality for instance, a person can appear to be normal, and seem to be what others might say is a “good person”. Yet, when that so-called “fine upstanding citizen” commits a horrible breach of social consensus, others pretend to be surprised. All manner of “disbelief” are conveniently expressed, and suddenly “monsters” are running loose everywhere. However, what do we really know about any particular person at given juncture of time and place? The complexity of thinking goes deeply within the individual’s multidimensional realm.

Significantly, to ensure one has continued existence, contrary to the permanence of extinction, and the finality of a life, there remains the eternal struggle to oppression toward another. Live perceived is death relieved, at least momentarily. Regarding the nature of evil is the relevance of this descriptor for counterproductive human interactivity. Simply calling an act of maladaptive behavior, of one person versus another, as an act of “evil”, only ascribes a reference point.

Evil as the actions of harming others covers a variety of behavioral inflictions. From ethical issues to criminal conduct, the wickedness that people do remains destructive to the advancement of civilization. To that point of particular allusion, the nature of evil, that invites the notion of “demonic forces”. From the perspective of criminality, some believe the “forces evil” drive people to criminal behavior. Whatever one’s philosophical or pseudoscience viewpoint, solvability factors ought to receive more validation that an immediacy of excusing the conduct. Yet, everyone is quick to find excuses.

All too frequently though across the societal spectrum, a cry for mitigation echoes. An easy answer desires to quench the panic of ignorance. While foolhardy conjecture and emotional irrelevancy trump facts and rationality, silly things are done in the name of fixing “the problem”. A metaphorical scale of malevolence stretches the scope of evil, from lesser forms to more insidious destructiveness. Across that continuum, stupidity, the foolishness of unenlightened thinking, can be very destructive.

Following a horrendous event, such negotiated speciousness quickly looks for “reasons” why such behaviors took place. Exact, precise, and quantitative explanations are elusive. Terrible things will happen again. And, in the aftermath a search for a quick fix, to make sure it “never happens again”, usually fails to ask deeper questions about human selfishness. Politicians, the press and pundits of curious “expertise” join an uninformed, misguided chorus of calls for “change”. Do people really change?

History of human beings does not show many positive trends. Instead, the human race hasn’t changed all that much in thousands of years, as to the essential nature. Nonetheless, there are multitudes of persistent nurturing explanations. Nature-nurture is confounding, multifaceted and intricate. To this day, little is known, or even clearly understood, as to the complexity of individual in terms of his or her thinking processes. It represents the age-old debate, on several levels and directions.

Agelessly, there continues the argumentative posture of two major schools of thought, with many linkages and subdivisions. From an assortment of ideological considerations, one side of the spectrum looks to the hedonistic intentional selfishness of freewill. Meanwhile across the communal framework, the other searches for clues in deterministic forces. Often, this means that there are mitigations outside the person and beyond his or her control. Opinions are diverse and represent many theories as to the aspects of how, what and why people think the things they do, and do the things they think.

Regardless, the end result may inflict harm to others. From particular thoughts, a chain of good or bad events becomes probable and then a certainty. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, no one has cornered the market in greater wisdom about the multidimensional complexity of human ideations. We continue to debate one’s self-motivated free expressions of malevolent thinking, where poor choices are made regardless of personal history, social status or other excuse-oriented influences. That goes in contrast to the growing acceptance of one excuse upon another, to alleviate culpability.

Fallacies of inference that lead to hasty unscientific generalizations, steeped in ignorance, emotionalism and bias, no matter how well accepted, do not ensure certainty. Likewise, unscientific asserted conjecture, absent evidentiary validation, for any claim not exclusively provable, regardless of public gullibility, substantiates nothing. Unfortunately, in post-modern pop culture collectivism, where easy solutions and immediate gratifications are reinforced, analytic thinking falters.

Rational choice advocates, as well as classical theorists, with a focus on responsibility for what one thinks and subsequently does, contrasts sharply with the forgoing philosophical perspectives. Those views that are fast to “justify” illicit behaviors, whereby “externalities of influence” are “driving forces”, do not advance the cause-effect necessity for advancing human civilization. On the contrary, while being a contrasting contrary position, aid in hastening the regression of the human species.

For many people, quickly getting an alibi, and eventually “rehabilitation”, doesn’t often insist upon accountability and corrective responsibility for actions committed. Many people, from politicians to priests, from consumers to corporations, want a convenient way out of whatever predicament they chose in the first place. Manipulation of interpersonal interactions hides behind clever and cunning disguises.

On the so-called darkside of human nature, the dark aims of individual willfulness use anything to rationalize the easiness of perpetration. With criminals for instance, and those who haven’t been caught yet, this includes quick collaboration with comfortable trouble-free theories that excuse their behavior. Exploiting the naiveté of the “experts” has been learned at an early age and willfully continues through all lifestyles. Supporters quickly rally to express their emotional postures, laced with plenty of subjective validation, as to the societal ills that caused culprits to perpetrate “evil” deeds.

To seek an uncomplicated explanation for deep privately created thoughts, known only to the creator himself or herself, is superficial at best. In the process, hopeful adherents yearn for the “silver bullet” that reveals the extraordinary nature of complex behavioral mysteries. Of such manifestations, that is not likely in the near future. The reality of an in-depth analysis of human nature is never ending investigative process, with no hard and fast conclusions. Solvability continues an endless digression where an ultimate answer is an elusive trek into the depths of human darkness.

Yet, an ongoing focus as to the thinking processes ought to continue, for the sake of intellectual discussion, investigative research and civilized enlightenment. As nothing is well settled at this point in time, it is divisive discourse and counterproductive to say we know everything there is to know about human nature. For the classical perspective on criminality, the fundamental notions to this day, remains a culmination of complexity in willful self-indulgent ideation. A seduction to adversity is purposeful.

Excuses are irrelevant once accountability is expected and responsibility accepted. From fantasy to fulfillment, a yearning to achieve physicality of experience suggests the purposeful realism for intentional inflictions. The essential nature by which people put ideas into action, and the deceptive probabilities that foment “evil” intentions, are within the schemes of every individual. Decision-making assesses a personal “cost-benefit” to either infliction or restraint from fulfilling what one wants to do.

The nurture-nature complexity remains enigmatic, regardless of how many movies, television dramas, or newscasters claim otherwise. Subsequent mixtures by which individuals emerge in dysfunctional yet creative ways are self-induced. Selfish unevolved thinking is at the foundation of arrogance for intentional malevolence, regressive premeditations and intricate personal capacity for any perpetrations.

Crowning of Gears

The misalignment is undoubtedly a very serious problem as to different kinds of gears. The old problem is the common condition of misaligned mating parallel-axis (spur and helical) gear tooth surfaces. There is a solution which is new to molded plastic gears but old in machined gear practice. It is the modification of gear flanks by making them full thickness at mid-face-width and tapering them to each edge.

The above mentioned method, i.e. modification, extending over the full height of the gear tooth, is referred to as crowning. Misalignment of gear teeth is very important. Instead of the ideally parallel gear rotation axes, the axes may be intersecting in the same plane, or skew in different planes, or a combination of both.

Crown is commonly specified by the height of the circular arc spanning the width of the gear tooth in a direction perpendicular to the tooth surface. The full required crown is generally applied to only one of the two mating gears, preferably to the gear which will provide the greater shrinkage clearance to assist in the ejection of the molded part.

Let us see the crowning of many gears. First, let us see something about the crowning of machined gears. There is a long standing practice of crowning machined steel gears. The modification of metal tooth surfaces is generally accomplished by secondary operations. Crowned gears have been used in a great variety of gear transmissions. There is a need even when the transmission housing is of rigid metal construction with accurately machined features for mounting ball bearings with negligible clearances. In applications associated with molded plastic gears, the need is greater.

The second is the crowning of molded plastics gears. The recent introduction of crowned molded plastic gears has required significant development in new tooling and processing methods. The new tooling includes the construction of the mold cavity with varying cross-section, smallest at the ends and largest at the center of the face width. And the new processing covers the ejection of the molded gear while preserving the modified tooth surfaces. This requires the optimum control of the ejection timing so as to take advantage of the initial shrinkage and the limited elasticity of the still hot plastic material. This researched process is readily available for spur gears and some helical gears.

Delphi: Centre of the Ancient World

Delphi has survived the ravages of earthquakes and time, although it is hard for us today to imagine why this remote place was the centre of the ancient world. However, it was the home of the sun god Apollo and visited by the rich, famous and nobility of the day.

Delphi is most famous for the oracle, which attracted the visitors to the site. All of them wanted to have advice from Apollo given to them by his priestess.

The priestess in attendance at the oracle did not see visitors every day. She gave her prophecies once a month, for nine months a year, but only if the omens were favourable. There must have been queues of people waiting to hear what their futures held.

Apollo’s priestess spoke while perched on a tripod hanging over a hole in the ground. In recent years archaeologists and geologists discovered that she sat over a fissure through which fairly noxious vapours escaped. The priestess was undoubtedly affected by these, as they were methane, ethane and ethylene. It must gave been a hallucinatory experience.

It is said that this place was discovered by goats and a goatherd, who noticed that his goats were behaving very oddly. He went to investigate and started to prophesy. He wasn’t unique, anyone who went near the fissure did the same.

The priestess gave her prophecies in riddles,so this meant that interpretations wee necessary and sometimes these were woefully wrong. One famous example is when King Croesus (remember the saying as rich as Croesus?) of Lydia visited Delphi and asked the oracle to say whether or not he should attack the Persians. The answer was “Cross the border and a great empire will fall.” Croesus took this to mean that he would be victorious and the Persian empire would be vanquished. What actually happened was that he lost the battle. As a remonstrance to the priestess, and so also to the god Apollo, he sent his chains to Delphi.

In response he was told “”You should have asked which empire would fall.” There was no apology. The priestess and the god Apollo were above reproach.

Delphi was extremely rich as rulers such as Croesus sent their riches to the site of the oracle in the hope that this could favourably influence their fortune. As illustrated in the story of Croesus, however, these gifts did not always work.

These days you come across Delphi suddenly. It nestles between the two ‘Shining’ Rocks on Mount Parnassus. You can’t see it as you approach the ancient site from the road, but suddenly – there it is. There’s a certain ‘Wow’ factor involved.

When you have negotiated the rocks and boulders that strew the site, visit the museum. You’ll need at least three hours to see everything.

If you have time visit Arachova, a good place to stop for lunch, and don’t leave without seeing the nearby 11th century monastery of Osio Loukas. There are some marvellous frescos and icons, the work of Michael Damaskinos, the renowned Cretan icon painter of the 16th century.

Everyone should visit Delphi at least once in a lifetime. It’s an incredible place, even now.

Is the Health Care Sector Recession Proof?

As per my belief, in times of economic instability, even the footing of the medical industry becomes rickety along with other sectors but that does not coax me to deem Health sector vulnerable to recession. By putting forth the reference of statistical data, I would like to highlight the fact that the pharmaceutical division of our country saw an estimated 24 percent growth when it came to hiring professionals in the medical sector. And seeing this trend, our country can only expect this percentage to rise in the near future. As a matter of fact, I strongly consider the pharmaceutical sector of our country as an active recruiter now and even in the near future.

Let us throw light on the fact that some of the heavyweight medical firms of our country have immensely opened their wings and have expanded their operations to other parts of the world. These very firms have affirmed their presence in the medical sector with the help of plethora of acquisitions as well as migrants which in turn, has resolved in the opening of surfeit of jobs in the health industry. One of the primary factors which play an instrumental part in the progress of major pharmaceutical firms is the growth rate as well as the strategies for expansion across other nations. The growth rate of major healthcare firms has always been robust in our nation and these firms have always been coming up with lucrative expansion plans. This in turn has made the health industry of India, a billion dollar enterprise.

Let us throw light on the growth in the export market. Over a period of 5 years, statistics tell us that the export of medical products of multi-national pharmaceutical organizations based in India has increased from a staggering USD 6.23 billion to USD 8.7 billion. Thus, this clearly shows a 21 percent increase in the annual rate of growth for the industry. So if we have seen an impressive increase in the revenue generated from exports, then it is quite evident that more jobs have opened up in the health sector.

The pharmaceutical industry of our country has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade which drives us to believe that our country's health sector will be included in the top 10 global markets tentatively by the year 2020. Healthcare is a sector that can never degrade owed To the rising medical demands of our population. The capital profits generated by healthcare heavyweights such as Ranbaxy is immense which is why, the healthcare sector as per my faith is quite invulnerable to recession.

Over the past decade, we have witnessed our country growing under the strong influence and tutelage of globalization. India certainly happens to be one of the most revered global markets in the present day and age which is something that has stolen the attention of well-known Multinational Corporations. The revenue of healthcare corporations has increased at a skyrocketing rate over the past decade after numerous mergers and international acquisitions by major Indian pharmaceutical firms. As a result of multiple mergers and acquisitions, the pharmaceutical sector of our nation has grown leaps and bounds sinceforth, giving rise to ample jobs in the medicare sector.

Not only has our country been a disciple of globalization, but the healthcare industry of our country has taken the form of Godfather for a few of the African nations as well. It is a well known fact that the continent of Africa has been plagued with more diseases than any other continent in the whole world. This is one of the primary reasons why Africa at present is a hotspot for major healthcare firms who have expanded their wings deep within the continent. Surfeit of domestic Healthcare companies from India have made their way to Africa over the past few decades which has assisted in their growth and added more revenue.

Our nation has had its share of healthcare calamities but owed to the introduction of modern medical treatments and amenities, the situation has been tackled and brought down to a great extent. Healthcare has found its way to inaccessible topographical locations of our country and people residing in these locations have witnessed hospitals being constructed first-hand. This has not only brought healthcare facilities to rural and inaccessible nations but has also created plethora of jobs for people residing in those territories.

Healthcare plays the most imperative role in shaping the economy of a nation. Furthermore, it is one sector of the economy which remains unhindered even if the economy falls as healthcare claims have always been steady or have increased at a steady pace.

If statistical data is to be relied upon, then we will know that major cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, New Delhi and Vishakhapatnam have shown a reliably higher rate of Human Resource (HR) demands over the course of one year. Major hospitals have emerged in these cities giving rise to multiple prospects of employment in the health sector.

At present, the prospects of employment for mid-level professionals as well as junior professionals is immense in the field of healthcare due to the fact that the pharmaceutical magnates of our country are robustly and robustly oriented towards increasing the manufacturing rate of pharmaceutical products that can Be exported to different parts of the country as well as to other nations across the world. There used to be a time when healthcare was not viewed from the aspect of business but over the course of a few decades, many major healthcare firms have developed a greater understanding and have been seeking inspiration and brainwave than other multinational healthcare firms which have expanded their Operations across various continents.

Let us consider various aspects of the manufacturing processes that every healthcare enterprise employs.

1. Product Development: – (htt1) The survival as well as growth of any healthcare firm chiefly lies in its ability to produce products that can be widely accepted by the population. Not only should the product be effective enough to be accepted but it must also carry a justifiable price tag. An exorbitant price tag will have relatively fewer takers than a reasonable one. Every pharmaceutical company must come up with a well defined process oriented towards giving shape to new product ideas. This does not end the story as the product needs to be channelized into the market in such a way so as to generate money-spinning revenue for the company so that it can increase its production. The aspect of innovation in technology has always been high in the field of healthcare which is one of the reasons why money always keeps flowing through health sector.

2. Inventory Management: – (htt2) Owing to the booming revenue of medical institutions, there are no compromises when it comes to inventory management. Furthermore, in order to manage and safeguard inventories, we need professionals who can handle these equipments. This is where the door opens to a new niche of employment. A hospital can provide employment in the most diverse niches than any other sector which is one of the primary reasons why the profit rate of healthcare is always booming.

3. Sales & Marketing functions: – (Wolper, 2004) The sales and marketing divisions of major healthcare firms are the dark horses that have played a vital role in instigating a strong presence of the firm on a global platform which in turn has made the Healthcare sector immune to any form of recession. The expansion of marketing function in the healthcare industry is possible only when the whole structure of economics in the pharmaceutical sector of a company is rigid and strong. Here is the reason for the fact that sales and marketing of pharmaceutical products are a long way in ascertaining a profitable track record for healthcare firms, there are few prospects of any downfall in the healthcare sector.

In the present day and age, the health care sector is highly seeking the assistance of senior-level professionals apart from juniors and mid-level workforce. Pharmaceutical scientists, clinical research specialists as well as radiologists are nowdays in high demand due to the fact that they are actively involved in giving shape to new form of drugs that can bring about a groundbreaking change in the whole dimension of health care in the country. Multinational companies are heavily investing in the health care sector especially in the field of collaborative research so that more and better drugs can be discovered for the betterment of the population.

Hereforth, the health care sector is recession-proof as per my belief.

Osu: The Meaning Of "Osu" In Karate

The literal meaning of the expression “Osu!” can be determined from the kanji (Chinese characters) from which the term is derived (see above). Osae means “to press” and shinobu means “patience” or “steady spirit”. These two symbols are combined in the traditional Japanese martial arts to form Osu, which translates as “persevere while pushing oneself to the absolute limit”. A cursory reading of this definition might tempt one to think that advancement in karate than is therefore equated with the development of extreme physical and mental strength. However, to stop at this understanding would be to miss the point of karate completely. Certainly, one can push oneself to the limit in any sport and achieve incredible feats of body and mind. So how is karate different? True growth in the martial arts requires moving beyond ego-centred thoughts of personal gain and loss. For this reason, the term “moving Zen” is sometimes used when speaking of martial arts practice. To illustrate how “pushing oneself to the absolute limit” in moving Zen can lead to spiritual growth, the concept of koan training in zazen (formal seated Zen) is described below.

Zazen practice has its own particular technique, called a koan. A koan is an absurd puzzle. There is no rational way to “solve” it; it is an impossibility, an impasse for the mind. Regardless of your determination to provide the zazen master with the “correct” answer to the riddle, your efforts are futile. Suddenly you are stuck, and the master continues saying to you, “Work hard! You are not working hard enough.” And the harder you work (i.e. think), the more you are stuck, moving nowhere: you cannot go back, you cannot move forward. And the master continues hammering you, “Work harder!” A moment comes when you’re not holding anything back, your whole being is involved, and still you are stuck. It is precisely at this moment, when your whole energy is invested, that you become aware of the absurdity – as never before. Only at that peak do you “realize” that this problem is absurd-it cannot be “solved” with the mind.

And with that realization, the koan is experienced and therefore understood. In karate, kumite serves as the koan. No matter how hard you train, no matter how much weight you can lift, no matter how fast you are, you may still be defeated. And the Sensei pushes you, “Work harder”. It is not until you have given everything you have to give and it is still not enough that you “realize” (experience) the absurdity of your ego trying to overcome an opponent. It is at this moment that the barrier to a deeper source of wisdom is removed. Now your movements, coming without thoughts, may be fluid and precise.

The key point is that, in both zazen and karate, the koan must be experienced rather than intellectualised in order for transformation to occur. As demonstrated above, the experience cannot occur until one has truly persevered in giving maximum effort. In “Zen, Pen, and Sword,” Randall G. Hassle explains that Osu may be used as a strong affirmative reply in the dojo even if full understanding is not yet present. It is similar to the idea of two people riding in a car on an icy road on the edge of a deep canyon. If you are the passenger, and the driver says, “Are you okay?”, you might reply “Osu!”, indicating that, while there’s nothing you can do to make the situation better or less dangerous at the moment, your spirit is satisfied that the best that can be done at the moment is being done.

So, when greeting fellow students or responding to the Sensei in the dojo, saying “Osu!” announces that, even if you do not feel 100 percent today or even if you do not fully understand a training concept, you are present and giving everything you have. In this way, you are preparing yourself to be receptive to the spiritual growth in which the practice of karate – moving Zen – has to offer. A free video streaming course on the Japanese language for martial arts can be found at which talks about the term Osu and other karate terminology.

How to Get Ahead With a Powerful Personal Brand

This article first appeared under in "Primer" Magazine, published weekly online for post-college guys interested in personal improvement and career development.

Personal branding is essential, whether you are just starting out in your first job, or moving up a run on the career ladder. It's something you need to work on so when you ask yourself the question, "Who am I?" You'll know the answer and be able to communicate it clearly and concisely.

Some people confuse their personal brand with their "elevator speech." The term "elevator speech" trivializes an important process that will help you understand exactly what makes you stand out from the crowd.

Your brand influences how important internal and external audiences, including your boss, your customers and prospects perceive you and what they think you have to offer them. Another way of understanding branding is that it's the words you would want people to use in describing you.

Branding is what sets you apart from your competition. Let's look at the brands of some famous companies and people. FedEx, for example, is positioned as the company that you can rely on to deliver your package by 10:30 tomorrow morning. Absolutely, positively. Google is the leader in search, and continues to be. The advent of new competition has severely made a dent in its market share.

People, like companies, have recognizable brands, too. What is your impression of the singer Britney Spears? Is it different from the way you perceive Mother Teresa? How about Sarah Palin? Her brand positioning is fuzzy right now. People do not quite what to make of her. It does not help that former members of John McCain's campaign staff are trashing her.
What is personal branding?
A commonly accepted definition –
How you and the services you provide are perceived in the minds of the people in your company, your clients and prospects.

Most people will already have a fixed idea in their minds about you. Individuals are often identified with pre-fixes: ie: Harvard MBA, Nobel Prize winner, Playmate-of-the-month, 350-hitter, salesman of the year, etc. If your particular target audience has no preconceived ideas, then you have the opportunity to develop your personal brand as you would want it.

Always remember that your brand must promise a benefit to your targets.

Some pointers about branding:

  • Your personal brand must be simple and easily understood.
  • Two or three of your key attributes should distinguish you from your competition.
  • Your targets must be able to grasp your brand quickly and translate it into "What's in it for me?"

As you define your brand, think of the attributes that set you apart from your fellow employees or with representatives of other companies who may be calling on your customers. Take some time to give serious thought to your strengths. Write them down.

Do a web search of articles and mentions of your competitors to read if anything is being written about them. Are certain words used repeatedly? Look up their names of LinkedIn and study the words the use to describe themselves in their profiles.

Now – and you knew this was coming – do a search on yourself. Go through the same exercise and see what people are writing or saying about you. What are you saying or writing about you in social media and in personal meetings?

What are the ingredients of a personal brand?

Now that you've done some soul searching about yourself and research on your competition, get specific about the particular attributes that you can draw on in developing your personal brand. These can include, but are not limited to:

Technical expertise. This can be a real differentiator. If you have a special skill that is unique to you in your company, this can be a real winner for you. Find a way to weave it in your brand statement.

Industry specialty. Suppose you are looking for a new job. You've hit a wall in your first job, and it's time to move on. If you have experience in an industry that is always in need of skilled people like you, then play that up in your brand statement.

Academic credentials. While you're still in your 20s, where you went to school is still one of your most important qualifications, before you've had the time to acquire the experience that will ever supplant your academic credentials. In the meantime, Harvard, Yale and the other Ivies, and highly technical schools like Cal Tech and MIT, still impress recruiters. And, in fact, will still impress the people who can help move your career forward in your current company.

Awards and recognition. Did you earn any special awards in college? All-American in (name the sport), Phi Beta Kappa?

Reputation of your current company. If you are working for a Fortune 100 company, that will mean something to a potential employer. If your company offers better / more / unique services, that will go into your brand for potential customers.

Your "wins." Even within your own company, bringing in some big and profitable clients will greatly enhance your personal brand as you seek to get promoted.

After you have analyzed your key capabilities, you will need to put them into words that communicate the essence of your brand. Be particularly aware of presenting yourself with an eye towards what's in it for the listener. Your brand statement is the "grabber" that that will compel your listener to want to hear more.

Example of a grabber:

"This is Peter Quick with the Quick & Jones law firm. I recently returned from a five-year tour in our Moscow office.
We're the only full-service American law firm there. I have a first-hand understanding of what it takes to set up a company in Russia. " Here, your brand is based on your personal, unique experience of having worked on the ground in Russia.

Communicating your brand

Now that you've defined your brand, you need to communicate it to those who can contribute to your success. You can:

  • Contact reporters and offer to become a source for quotes and articles
  • Conduct seminars for clients and prospects
  • Write articles
  • Give speeches
  • Become active in professional organizations
  • Be active in social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter

Before you get started in marketing yourself to those who count, be sure you can answer the question –

"What is My Brand?"

Softball, Born From Baseball

Softball and baseball, although they are similar they are very different. Baseball and softball are both sports that were "born" in the United States. Baseball is considered "the all American sport". Baseball started in the mid 1800s and softball started in the late 1800s.

Baseball is the game that boys grow up with. They start around 5 years of age but really start getting into the game by age 8. They will play baseball through school and those with drive and determination can go onto Professional Baseball.

Girls play softball in the younger years and both boys and girls in school and after the school years. There are a lot of adult softball leagues keeping adults of all ages busy with one of America's favorite pastimes. Softball is often played in Physical Education programs at the Junior High School, High School and College levels. In Colleges, for extra activities, teams are set up for intramural sports. Students can sign up to join a team for extracurricular activities. When you are finished with your school years, you can always find a neighborhood recreation program that you can sign up to play adult softball. These adult programs are generally for adults above the age of 18.

Softball is generally divided between Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch. Fast Pitch is more competitive and the ball is delivered fast as it is in baseball. The delivery is from an underhand pitch as opposed to from an overhand delivery as we see with baseball. In this pitch, the arm is rotated backward in a circular motion and as it comes forward again, the ball is released toward the batter and over the plate. It is a difficult pitch to master because if the release is not right, the ball could be anywhere. In Slow Pitch, the pitch also is delivered underhand but the arm is not brought around in the full and fast circle. The action is just a slight c circle underhand toss with a longer arc. The ball drops over the plate and gives the batter more advantage. Slow Pitch is not as competitive and more of a leisure fun activity. Often times, the outs are counted to get back up to bat but the score is often forgotten. (Unless you are playing in a league.)

This is a long way from softball's early beginnings on a windy day during November, 1887. Yale and Harvard supporters were gathered in Chicago awaiting the results of the Yale-Harvard football game. After the final of the game, someone drew a boxing glove at another and the other person tried to hit it with a stick. With this, the game of softball began. One hundred plus years later, softball was being recognized again. Although the game had attained international status, it was now time for the Olympics to recognize it. Softball was accepted to the Olympics in 1991. The introduction of softball to the Olympic Games appeared during the Summer Games of 1996. The future of baseball and softball is uncertain for the Olympics. The 2 sports will be included in the Olympic Games of 2008 but they have been dropped from the 2012 Games. They will be reconsidered but the drop makes it possible to replace these sports with 2 other sports with more International support. Part of the decision is based on the Baseball leagues refusal to take a break during the time of the Olympic Games. This does not allow the league players the ability to participate.

Choosing A Fine Bubble Diffuser – Disc Diffuser – Tube Diffuser Or Panel Diffuser?

Purchasers of fine bubble diffusers for their sewage treatment plant or industrial wastewater treatment plant have a lot of choices to make when selecting equipment for their project.

Diffusers are available in many shapes, including discs, tubes, squares, and rectangular panels, and in different materials, including elastomers like EPDM and porous media like Aluminum Oxide, Porcelain, or HDPE. Many books and papers have been written on the differences between these media.

However there are still many questions about the superiority or application of disc vs. tube vs. panel.

Many of the manufacturers in the business make multiple types of diffuser, though they tend to favor and promote one moreso than the others, typically for commercial reasons (they have a higher margin on one product) or for reasons of product differentiation (when specified by a client or engineer, it is difficult to find “equal” competitors).

Many tests of oxygen transfer efficiency have been carried out over the years on each type of diffuser (some of which are published in the ATV Handbuch), however product development is dynamic, and what was tested in the mid 1980’s may not apply today to modern discs, tubes and panels.

There are some common sense principles to follow, regardless of the development of the technologies.

In a retrievable system made of costly stainless steel, the diffuser which can handle the most air with the least stainless infrastructure is going to be an attractive choice. Typically tube diffusers are seen on retrievable systems for this reason.

In a fixed system where the pipes are bolted to the floor, and longevity and low maintenance are required, disc diffusers are more popular than tubes.

Where failure mode is important (i.e. catastrophic vs. slow) disc diffusers may be favored over tubes. Tube diffusers typically have a large air orifice, hence in case of a membrane rupture or clamp failure, a large volume of air can escape from that orifice, starving the rest of the system.

The deeper the tank, the less benefit panel diffusers offer in terms of efficiency. Panels are typically designed to produce very fine bubbles. In a shallow tank, this is a benefit, albeit a costly one since panel systems often carry a hefty price tag due to the amount of equipment required to purchase and install. However in a deeper tank, so much of the oxygen is transferred by the time the bubble has risen 15 ft that the bubble is said to be oxygen depleted, hence the benefit disappears. One must also be cognizant of the headloss of panel diffusers, since what is gained in terms of efficiency from small bubbles is often lost in extra energy needed to overcome the high back pressure of panel membranes.

Regardless of the type of diffuser, one should consider PTFE coated membrane diffusers, which may extend the lifetime of the membrane and will also reduce surface fouling as well.

Brand Value Plan – Brand Identity Guru

Developing brand value is critical to every organization and when professionally executed, delivers a clear and measurable competitive advantage to your firm. It does so by helping you establish a positive connection and value-relationship with your customer, which, over time, will build brand equity and increase brand value.

Once this value-relationship is established, both internally and externally, it can be measured, monitored and enhanced periodically, as needed, to strengthen your brand’s effectiveness and increase your bottom line. Whether you’re building a new brand or energizing an existing one,

developing brand value maximizes the value-relationship between corporate profitability and the perception of your brand.

The Assessment

The first step in the fine art of branding

Customers factor brands into every purchase. The stronger the brand, meaning the clearer the position it occupies in their minds, the more value it has and the more likely they are to choose it — again and again. The goal is to get them to choose your brand over your competitions. And that’s where a strong brand value can help.

I recommend an in-depth assessment, a strategic survey used to determine the state of your company’s brand. It helps you discover key elements important to satisfying your customer base utilizing brand research findings. The assessment provides a foundation upon which to develop the best model for customizing your brand communications master plan.

The Assessment allows you to accurately measure the present effectiveness and value of your brand. It establishes brand value as a benchmark for future enhancement. How? By zeroing in on which qualities and attributes of your products, services and company make you different from your competition. And, how well they are perceived in the market. It helps you modify and align products, positioning messages and communications with laser point accuracy on your customers’ specific needs and wants.

The Assessment is really a personality profile of your brand. It describes your good points, but more importantly, highlights where you are weak. It does so by using a system of inter-related measurements to gauge brand perceptions and effectiveness.

Using a grading scale of 1-10, the assessment can test vital aspects of your brand as it relates to:

o Products or services

o Target markets

o Messaging

o Communications.

An assessment conducts interviews with management, marketing, sales and other key employees. It will uncover segments of company operations that can do more to nourish the brand, helping you pinpoint areas ripe for improvement. The external research of an assessment includes surveys with clients, prospects, vendors and key industry personnel. It will conduct a “competitive analysis” which tells you how targeted audiences see you, your products or services and how you stack up against the competition.

After your assessment is complete tabulate the results and ask for a customized Brand Analysis Report. These are usually very informative. Often revealing. Only after analyzing all the essential components of the branding assessment can information be provided. This detailed document shows exactly where you can improve.

The Brand Plan

How your brand can become a work of art

Your brand is your company’s power base, its number one asset. Developing a Brand Plan is designed to ensure that your company delivers on its brand promise. It provides companies with a guidebook for continually building, measuring and enhancing brand value and helps you achieve clarity of branding focus and direction.

First, I recommend an Assessment to find your brand’s present position and value. Then I recommend developing The Brand Plan, an in-depth master Brand Plan that defines the strategies, which can strengthen and improve your brand’s performance and market position by establishing a connection and value-relationship with your customer.

Unlike The Assessment, the picture that is painted is not a snapshot of what you are today. The Brand Plan helps you redefine brand personality in the marketplace. It’s how your company will be tomorrow, how it will be seen and perceived by customers, potential customers, your managers, employees and vendors. When managed properly, The Brand Plan increases financial security, growth and earnings potential. It will establish a clearly defined brand vision for employees and management. Both their motivation and commitment to the delivery of the brand promise will greatly increase.

The Brand Plan is a strategic master Brand Plan that will contain specific internal and external strategies and tactics, all with the goal of turning your brand into a work of art. It’s a brandmaster action Brand Plan that encompasses:

o Brand objectives

o Brand positioning, the promise of the brand

o Brand strategy & tactics

The Brand Plan aligns products, services, and communications for uniform delivery of the brand

promise throughout your enterprise. Everything is spelled out, integrated, and ready for execution. This vital tool empowers every person in your company to show the true colors of your brand. It gives form and unity to communications that differentiate your brand in the marketplace. It provides a rallying point for employees and provides a cornerstone document of all corporate resources to support brand core competencies.

As people understand the defined objectives, more ideas blossom, making the brand grow even stronger. After all, the true test of any Brand Plan is for it to appreciate over time. The Brand Plan is not a static document to be hung in some dusty museum. It’s a living, breathing, dynamic statement of change based on proven scientific testing, data analysis and measurable results.

Motorcycle Security Tips Every Biker Must Know

In this day and age of technology motorcycle security systems have never been more foolproof. Take for instance, installing an alarm with a pager that notifies you if someone test-sat your motorcycle. Nobody pays attention to screaming vehicles, the ones with blaring false alarm anymore. Even if your bike is parked somewhere you can’t see it, the alarm with a pager is a pretty good deal. A LED display on your pager gives the owner information about arming, disarming and triggering the security system. The pager features vibration mode and has a range of up to half a mile. The pager still operate even if wires are cut or the battery on your bike is disconnected. A pager without an external siren is ideal because the thief will never know that he has triggered the alarm until the cops get him.

You can avail of security homing systems service that can track your motorcycle’s speed, location and direction anywhere in Mexico, Canada and the U.S. They have tracking computers that are monitored by the authorities. They have great success at locating stolen vehicles.

There are also sophisticated electronic motorcycle security system that would automatically disable the battery, ignition systems and fuel injectors making it impossible for the thief to ride away with your two-wheeled machine. There are some electronic security systems when installed in your motorcycle disengages when the vehicle is upright and then re-engages after the rider shuts off the ignition. It comes with a key-fob remote. There are varieties of alarms to choose from, ranging from basic motion sensors to devices that features remote arming, perimeter sensors, anti-hi jack set ups, ignition kill circuits and external light which signals that the bike is dis-armed and many more features.

When you install an alarm always wire it on the ground side directly tot he battery. Wiring and siren should be concealed so they can not be disabled by the thief. The strategy of a professional thief is usually bumping the bike to check if it has an alarm. If your motorcycle’s alarm go off several nights in a row, that is an indication that some crook test-sat your precious scooter and will come back with something to defeat the alarm before he attacks the locks. This should be your cue to vary your security measures.

When it comes to alarms, it should be sensitive enough to sound off when a thief begins working on your locks. Alarms should cut down the time( usually a minute or two) the determined criminal has to defeat the locks.

You have to outsmart the bad guys in order to keep your motorcycle secure. That means you have to be several steps ahead when it comes to strategies in security measures. It is time to get creative and confuse the slimeballs. First off, you need a combination of two to three different locks )e.g. disk lock,u-lock, a ground anchor, wheel lock, fork and ignition lock etc.). The thief would not have enough time nor the tools to defeat these locks. And they may go look for an easier target. A lever lock on the clutch adds another obstacle for the thief, particularly if you leave the motorcycle in gear, unbolt the shift lever and take it with you. Next, if you park your motorcycle in communal garages, negotiate a spot where you can anchor your bike to a pipe or pillar. Use a motorcycle cover with metal grommets (to prevent the cover itself from being stolen) and drape it over your motorcycle. Make friends with all the security guys, so they know who should be leaving with that particular bike.

To keep potential felons from knowing where your motorcycle is garaged, watch your mirrors as you approached your home, If you sense, someone is following you, drive right on by. Do not make that final turn towards your residence yet. Make three or four turns around the block. If a certain is still following you, your next turn is toward the police station.

You can disable your motorcycle by removing the main fuse after you park or install concealed cut-out switches that disable the ignition. You can do this by tapping a secret switch onto existing kill switch circuit. If your motorcycle has fuel injection re-wire a switch that cuts power to the fuel pump will keep the engine from firing. Re-configure your petcock handle so that when off, it appears to be on reserve. There are many creative ways to confuse the bad guys. The trick here is to conceal these anti-theft measures so that the crooks will run out of patience and will abandon your bike for an easier and quicker heist.

If you own your garage, you can reinforce it with a basic lock on the frame inside the door. If a trespasser seriously destroys it, he may have created enough noise to wake you up and the neighbors. Same with the sound of breaking glass if you tie a black sturdy thread to your bike to a pile of bottles and the trespasser would tripped over it.

Why not try a baby monitor? Put the monitor in your garage and the receiver in your bedroom. Embed a u-bolt in the garage floor and easily anchor your motorcycle to prevent a gang of muscled-guys from lifting your ride away into a truck. Provide another block using other vehicles such as a car. If a thief wants your bike desperately, he will have to hoist it over the car! Whether you have a dedicated security system to your garage or as an extension of the system on the rest of your home, stuff like, pressure pad, installed closed-circuit video camera, door sensors and motion-activated floodlights at the entrance can surely foil a break in.

Sustainable Living

Sustainable living or sustainable life style, for many is just environment friendly living, the true séance & meaning of sustainable living can be understood only if we can understand the denotation of the word sustainable it's self. Anything that can survive and can be rejuvenated after the test of time and every day direct and indirect factors is sustainable. Sustainability of a nation a social set up or simply the way we spend our lives depends upon how independent are when it comes to fulfill our daily needs on personal and national level both. Thus sustainable living is all about being independent when it comes to mobility, food production, health care and so on, sustainable living also depends highly upon sustainable production of mother of all leisure and production Energy.

Sustainable living amazingly is also environment friendly living. Every step taken by us towards sustainable living is also a step towards a cleaner carbon free environment around us. Not every family can have there own coal mine along with there personal coal power station, generating electricity for there home only, but every family can have there own wind turbines and solar panels on there roof tops generating electricity for individual units in a very sustainable manner . There is so much that can be done when it comes to sustainable living from growing some bit of our own food to producing a portion of our energy needs independently at little or zero cost. Many Americans should be able to learn about sustainability from there grandparents who struggled through the great depression of 1930s as sustainable living is 90% about consuming less or at least consuming consciously, only if we would squeeze our tooth paste tubes hard enough to utilize that last Bit of cream we trash out most of the time. Sustainable living depends on consuming consciously, what if fuel hits $ 10 a litter how many of us would walk to the super market and catch subways to work.

Switching to sustainable living and environment friendly life styles should be much easier for North Americans and Europeans, as the consumption is these developed parts of the world is already very high in terms of energy, fuel, food and daily use commodities, while poor and developing Nations of Africa and Asia should be able to speed up their development and real growth simply through adopting sustainable living.

Let's be a bit hypothetical about sustainability, now only if every Iraqi and Afghani family had there own solar power panels instead of central grid based power system, United Sates would have had to literally bomb every single house in these countries to cut the power of these Countries along with there communication. Sustainable living is not only green it can also be a nations most powerful yet peace full defense system.

Some of the simplest yet effective things we could do to reduce our carbon foot print, sustainable living are easy to adopt, some effortless changes made around our homes and work places can have a very positive impact towards our local ecology.

Only by replacing one 60 watts incandescent light bulb with one CF bulb in every home of North America we could get rid of the pollution equaling to removing one million gas guzzling cars off the road, but this is half the advantage of think all light bulbs in USA replace with CF bulb's and the natural cut down in power needs.

Staying fit and healthy is the base to sustainable living; Walking and cycling to work are the perfect ways to stay fit for our busy urban life style. Not only by doing so we stay fit but also save money, help air pollution and save soil. In one of my article about my personal experience of paddling to work I've mentioned about just how we can save up to 2 tons of carbon emissions per annual one can save and how fit one can stay.

Every time we switch off our AC's, TV's, Micro wave ovens and many other devices we tend to leave them hooked in the power socket, and tiny red light stays. These tiny red light indicate the vampire voltage being consumed by these devices, if all North Americans start controlling these vampire volts they can shutdown about 10 to 15 coal power stations.

We are what we eat, so we are weaklings as we eat week food produced with an aid of fertilizers and pesticides, organic food is now in demand and it production is still low, producing organic food is not only easier but also dirt cheap for farmers And they save on pesticides, and fertilizers and use insects and natural organic wastes to aid there crop. Organic food is a back bone to sustainable living, the concept of sustainability is all about healthy life, every organic vegetable and fruit helps reduce cancer risk, organic red grapes for example are know to reduce cancer risk to almost half as the plant fights against the Fruit fungus that creates an immune to fight cancer.

Many fashion designers are reclaiming fabric, many product and furniture designers are reclaiming materials such as wood and fibers. I would not mind reclaiming an iron or wooden trunk for a coffee table with a lick of paint on our old furniture we can follow the thrift green path of sustainable life style.

Traveling in Retirement – What to Take With You On the Road

One of the greatest discoveries as you enter into retirement is that now you have the time to travel. Possibly you have traveled during your work life. But much of this travel may have been work-related, and what was not travel for work, may have been rushed and stressful, or worse, an “on the bus, off the bus” group trip. None of these forms of travel would have given you much of an idea of how glorious and engaging travel can be when it is not work-related, rushed and stressful, or tethered to a group.

Now, as you enter a period when your travels may be more extensive, your questions may become more pressing. You have your bucket lists of travels to accomplish, and you know that it is essential to undertake your travel adventures while you are still energetic and agile. Of course your questions will likely start with: “Where shall I go?” Next you may ask: “Shall I travel independently or in a group?” Then you will inquire: “How shall I plan my trip so it will be an enjoyable and memorable experience?” And probably your next query will be: “What shall I take with me?”

Each of these questions leads to its own set of issues and considerations, all worthy of discussion. This article will focus on what to take along with you on the road. Although what to take with you may seem to be a relatively minor concern compared to the others, it actually will have a high degree of impact on the ultimate enjoyment and success of your trip. Becoming expert at preparing well for travel will yield high benefits and ensure that you enjoy your trip fully while you are taking it. Determine to become expert at this, and you will become a happy traveler. If travel is about to become an important part of your way of life, you need to get really excellent at doing it.

A good way to think about what to take with you on a trip is to enlist your own well-developed expertise about how to live a comfortable life in your own home. It is typical to furnish a home in terms of functions, establishing an orderly and comfortable environment where you have a way to meet needs and accomplish the basic tasks that you encounter in your day-to-day life.

At home, you have readily available not only clothes for getting dressed in the morning, but also outfits that serve you in other important functions– taking a vigorous walk, dressing up to go to the theater, staying warm when you take a boat ride on a chilly evening. If you need to clear your head from congestion, you have only to walk to your medicine cabinet to find your antihistamines. When you are thirsty, you head to the refrigerator door for ice water to stay hydrated. On days that are too pretty to eat inside, you pull out a table cloth and your picnic gear, and head to a park or out to the table in your backyard.

At home, not only do you have everything that you need, when you need it, but you also know exactly where to find it. Shirts are hanging in the closet and pants are on the shelf. Socks and underwear are in the drawer and shoes are on your shoe rack. Plates are in cabinets, utensils are in drawers, antihistamines are in the medicine cabinet. A place for everything, and everything in its place.

If everything seems so easy at home because you have gathered together and organized your belongings based on function, the same is also true for traveling comfortably. Start with what you will want to be able to do, listing the functions you will need to carry out over the course of your trip. Then determine what you need to take with you to support each function, and where you will keep it so you will know exactly where to find it when you need it. Think function, not packing list, and you will find that you already know very well how to do this.

Functions you will need to carry out as you travel include being prepared to:

  1. Dress comfortably, for cool and warm days, sunny and rainy weather.
  2. Walk many miles a day, including up and down hills, and possibly across cobblestones.
  3. Navigate your trip, with maps, essential information, and a detailed trip plan.
  4. Manage your money, credit cards and passports safely.
  5. Access critical trip documents, including passports, plane and train tickets, confirmations, addresses and phone numbers, taxis and drivers, and dinner reservations.
  6. Communicate and stay connected.
  7. Use and recharge electronics, converting to the power system in the country you will be visiting.
  8. Stay healthy for the duration of your trip, ready to handle a variety of possible physical challenges without lost days.

Taking each of these functions individually, here are some guidelines about what should earn a place in your suitcases, keeping in mind that everything you take along you will need to carry or drag, on and off trains, up and down stairs, and sometimes across cobblestones. If your destination happens to be Costa Rica, you may even find yourself hauling your bags down steep muddy banks to board boats that take you up a river or across a lake.

Be prepared to dress comfortably for cool and warm, sunny and rainy weather

Avoid taking either too many or too few clothes. While on your trip, you will want to feel good about how you look. So take some of your favorites. Don’t bother to stick with neutrals unless these are your personal taste and style. Take along the colors you like, but have in mind multiple ways they can be worn together and layered with each other.

A good rule of thumb is to divide the number of days you will be traveling by three, and take that many outfits, all ones that you like to wear. Of course, you can consolidate further by counting a skirt or a pair of pants as part of multiple outfits. For women, take along a few scarves and necklaces to mix it up a bit. Or, even better, plan to purchase these during your trip.

Put blouses and shirts in a packing envelope so you can transfer them to a drawer or closet shelf as a unit, and disturb only those items that you actually wear. This way part of your repacking will already be out of the way when it comes time to move on to the next stop. Roll skirts and pants and pack them to they form a single clearly displayed layer in your suitcase. This will enable you to locate and remove your selections while leaving the rest undisturbed, again saving you repacking time.

Take along any additional pieces you will need to dress in layers and be comfortable in both warm and cool weather. Certainly, carry along a sun hat and an umbrella. Every day on a trip is precious time. You will not want to be sidelined by sun or rain. Select clothing that does not wrinkle or that will not show wrinkles, with a preference for textured or blended cottons, not synthetics.

Pack enough underwear for a week, in a zippered pouch of course, and plan to do a mid-trip wash. Even if you do not have a washing machine in any of your accommodations, it is a simple task to fill the bathtub with water and liquid soap or shampoo, and wash your clothes that way, hanging them to dry around your room. To be prepared for this function of doing the wash, take along a small container of liquid soap and a stretchable clothes line designed to be used without clothes pins. Keep these laundry items together in their own zip-lock bag so you can readily put your hands on them.

All of this pre-organization of your clothing will make unpacking and repacking go quickly, so you will have more time to be where you are.

Be prepared to walk many miles a day, including up and down hills

Traveling can tire out your feet fairly quickly. You will be walking farther, and over more varied and challenging surfaces, than is your custom at home. Take along multiple pairs of comfortable walking shoes to keep your feet happy for the duration of your trip, and swap out your shoes regularly. Happy feet make for a happy trip.

Spend the money necessary to purchase very comfortable shoes, with memory foam to ensure an equal distribution of pressure to the feet, and an anatomically-shaped foot bed to eliminate pressure and friction. And make sure that at least one pair of the shoes you take has a closed-back heel and fastens securely with ties or Velcro closures. When you are walking up and down steep hills and steps, slip-ons can become treacherous.

Be prepared to navigate your way through your days smoothly

Carry with you a full set of Day Pages with the day-by-day details of your trip. These will be your “ace in the hole” – an essential ingredient to your having a smooth, stress-free journey. They will give structure to your travels, and optimize how you navigate through each day, always knowing what’s coming next, with all the addresses, telephone numbers and closing times you will need, together in one place.

A good set of Day Pages includes orienteering instructions so that in each new destination you can immediately begin learning your way around. These include small Google-map walk-arounds, starting at the door of your hotel. Their purpose is to help you get your bearings quickly, including where to find your own neighborhood bakery, wine shop, fresh market, deli, and café, as well as the nearest ATM.

Be prepared to handle your money, credit cards and passport safely

Money handling is an important function while traveling. You need to have a system for keeping your money, credit cards, and passport safe, while also having convenient access to them. When traveling in another country, exchange enough cash in advance of your trip to get you started when you arrive. Then use ATM machines to replenish your cash supply as needed. Plan to use the ATM machines and debit cards that minimize foreign exchange fees, with bank ATM machines being the best option.

Call all debit and credit card companies before you leave to give them notice that you will be traveling so they will not deny your transactions. Make copies of your cards and passports, front and back, so you can immediately report any theft or loss. Keep these paper copies in a separate place from your cards.

Be prepared to access all critical trip documents

You will need to be able to access your critical trip documents quickly–to be prepared to locate and board your train and present your tickets to the conductor as required, to call ahead to your hotel and give its address to your taxi driver, and for all the many additional critical connecting points of your trip. This means you will need all of your trip documents where you can find them without delay, including passports and insurance papers, plane and train tickets, hotel and tour confirmations, addresses and phone numbers, taxis and drivers, dinner and concert reservations.

To keep your travel documents completely organized, purchase a zippered passport wallet and always return your passport to it throughout your trip – no exceptions. Use clear plastic sleeves for itinerary and accommodation information, keeping the next needed information visible through the front, for easy access even in the rain.

Use an accordion folder for train tickets, vouchers, confirmations and reservations. Designate a separate portfolio for each destination’s upcoming Day Pages, and another one for days that have been completed. Take along an empty coupon holder for receipts, and a small journal to keep track of them. The key is to get organized and stay organized. This will considerably reduce stress during your trip.

Be prepared to communicate and stay connected with the right phones

It has become easier to communicate abroad now. Country SIM cards are readily available to be installed in your iPhone. Or, as an alternative, you will be able to purchase an inexpensive pay-as-you-go cell phone, complete with a country SIM card and generally some complimentary minutes. “Topping off” your cell phone minutes as needed is a simple matter of stopping by a newsstand. If you plan to use your smart phone and install a country SIM card at your destination, be sure to unlock it before you leave on your trip.

Sorting out your communications during your trip is essential so you can stay connected when you get separated from your travel companions or decide to head in different directions. Also you will need to call ahead to hotels, make reservations for restaurants and tours, and call taxis when you need them.

To keep track of all your communications paraphernalia, including charging cables and portable power banks, designate one zippered pouch or large zip-lock bag for this use only. These are items that easily can get lost in a suitcase, or left behind in a hotel room. Before leaving each location, check your designated communications pouch to make sure everything is there in its place before you go.

Be prepared to use and recharge electronics

Designate another zippered pouch for everything else you are carrying that pertains to electronics. Into this pouch put all of the power adapters, converters, charging cables, extension cords and multi-socket extension plugs that you will need to keep your electronics functioning throughout your trip. Keep all of these wires neat and compact with rubber bands. And, again, check your electronics pouch before you leave each hotel to ensure that nothing essential gets left behind.

Be prepared to stay healthy for the duration of your trip

Another zippered pouch should be reserved for everything you will need to stay healthy, inside and out. Put in your prescription drugs and supplements. Also carry a supply of cold medicine, Tums, pain medicine, and any other types of medication you could possibly end up needing. Take foot powder for sore feet, Band-Aids and Neosporin for various mishaps, and lotion to protect your skin. Depending on your destination, also pack bug spray and/or sunscreen. Last, but not least, take along a bottle of melatonin to overcome jet lag and to control sleep irregularities caused by time changes or other unfamiliar sleep disturbances. Consolidate these items in zip-lock bags to cut down on packaging and conserve space.

Traveling can be strenuous. You may develop blisters, various aches and pains, or even sniffles. By taking along a selection of items to handle various contingencies, just in case you need them, you will be ready to prevent small complaints from slowing you down.

Some additional advice

Any comfortable home needs storage space. This is also true when your home is your suitcase. During your trip, your storage space definitely should not be in the suitcases you are carrying with you day after day. Do keep everything you need with you. But lighten your load whenever you can. Yes, this will cost money, but not as much as you might think. And you are worth it!

Designate a zippered pouch for mailing supplies – at a minimum packing tape and address labels. Then, periodically, as your suitcases begin to take on weight, mail home a box. Purchase the box at the local post office and get one large enough to do yourself some good. Into this box put anything you will no longer need during your trip – past Day Pages, brochures and booklets, shoes that didn’t turn out to be comfortable, books you’ve finished reading, treasures and gifts you have purchased along the way. Tape this all up and address it to yourself.

This advantage to give yourself when traveling is well worth the cost and bother. Each time you lighten your load, you will feel your burdens lifting. And, of course, you will free up room for additional treasures that you may discover along your way.

As you enter your prime time for traveling, what you take with you, and how you organize it, is critical to the quality of your travel experience. Before you depart on a trip, look back through your list of the functions you will need to perform while you are traveling to ensure that you are prepared to carry out each of them. And then you are off!
