Cynthia's Journey

When Cynthia first laid eyes on the seawater at Hobie beach she fell in love with it. She had been following the city and the beachfront through the pane of a window on a bus.

All the restaurants, the people selling crafts, animals carved intricately out of wood on the side of the road, the aquarium that Port Elizabeth was famous for and snake park, teenage couples walking hand-in-hand. A girl with her arms around her boyfriend's neck as he took his girlfriend for a piggy-back ride on the beach.

She did not even know what a swimming pool looked like with its ceramic tiled floor a white mosaic. She had only seen one on the television in Ma Agnes's house when a group of children had huddled and struggled to fit into her snug living room to watch Rocky Balboa and his inspiring moves. When she first got up that morning she wished it was a school day. When she climbed on the bus she sat by herself. She was surrounded by ringing laughter. She consoled herself that at least she had got a window seat.

Cynthia. Cynthia. ' Cynthia tried to ignore the mocking calls from the back of the bus where the more boisterous and confident children sat. 'Cynthia.' The voice came again. It sounded like Hilton Jacobus otherwise known as 'Minaar'. He was forever going on with her, making fun out of her posh, educated voice in that devil may care attitude of his. She tried to ignore him. 'Oh, Cynthia.' That was it. The last straw. She turned around. She felt her knees burning and clenched and slowly unclenched her fists but all she could see was stern, serious faces glaring back at her with glassy eyes. There was not a fault glimmer of who had called her name. When she turned around to face the rows of heads ahead of her she heard muffled tittering behind her and she blinked back tears and swallow hard. She willed Hilton's face inside her mind as she clocked him one, thumping him with all the strength she could assemble and muster. She imagined shaking him until his teeth and bones rattled inside his head. It gave her a small, knowing comfort.

Everyone around her was talking loudly and the church leaders that were going to supervise them on the trip did not even shush them. Everyone was excited. They all saw it as an adventure except Cynthia. She could hear her mother's voice inside her head, 'Ai, you're always complaining Cynthia. There's more to life than meets the eye. ' Her mother had left school in standard four. Her family was destruction. She had to go to work as a domestic to keep the home fires burning and so she could put food on the table.

If it had been a school day, at this time Cynthia would have been in Math's class not riding a bus that had seen better days. The foam was coming out of the seat she was sitting on and every time the bus went over a bump she would jolt up and down out of her seat. She would have been working out elegant solutions and making sums in her head, drawing her initials at the top of her page when she got distracted in class but she almost always aced her tests. It made her mother proud. 'This one could go far if she works hard enough.' She overheard her mother say to her father one night when she finishing her homework by the paraffin lamp.

Everyone undressed around her shameless, revealing the new suits they had gotten especially for the beach but more importantly for this trip.
While everyone around her was swimming in proper bathing costumes she swam in a t-shirt and pink shorts but for the first time in her life she did not mind. She came with some of her school friends on a bus with the words 'Putco' emblazoned on the side with the church Sunday school.

The seawater, the intense smell of it, the colors of the day, the salty tang on her tongue as a breeze washed gently over her small frame made her forget about the rains that came washing away the dirt and rubbish in the streets of the location Where she lived with her parents and her siblings. It made her forget that she was poor and that she did not have much prospects in her future. The white froth of the seawater bubbled like fizz between her toes.

She tried to watch the boats on the horizon to stop from keeping hungry and acknowledging the ache in her belly that was like a knot. There were women in bikinis. She could not believe that they dared to show so much skin.

At first she splashed herself in the waves notaring to go in deeper because she did not know how to swim properly. She only knew the doggy paddle. One of the youth leaders had taught a group of them the basic moves.
She watched older girls and boys bravely maneuvering their way over huge breakers that slapped against the rocks. She wished she had their brazen confidence.

They were going to eat hot dogs with relish, mustard and tomato sauce and real hamburgers that came with lettuce, onion rings and tomato just like it came from KFC and McDonald's. Words that just rolled effortlessly off Cynthia's tongue as if she had spent her whole life going through drive-through with her parents and tucking into hot chips, fried chicken with hot sauce from Chicken Licken and burgers. The church had got pledges from kind, well-meaning folk – meaning Irish missionaries.

'Haw! Look at Cynthia swimming in her clothes. Is not your mother going to shout you? ' The other girls standing around Cynthia, eyeing her and then moving away from her when she refused to take the bait. Children could be cruel sometimes.
'No. She's not like that. ' Cynthia said defiantly wishing her eyes could burn holes into the heads of the group of girls who were standing around her and watching her like hawks.
'Pink shortie!' A boy shouted and wolf whistled.

Cynthia saw red but there was not anything she could do about it and pretended she did not hear anything. She just shifted the sand between her feet and cradled it in the flushed spaces between her toes. The sand was warm. At first the sensation was strange. It felt as if it was small explosions under her feet as she walked. She picked up shells as she walked along admiring their shapes.

Girls ran to the gentle breaking of the waves in groups of two's and three's holding hands shrieking and crying out with pleasure as the seawater grazed their knee, wet their stomachs leaving damp patches that were dry minutes before. For the grown ups milling on the beach they were a joy to watch. Others sat on the sand building what they imagined sand-castles to be, using their hands to secure a moat, tall, secure walls, patting and padding the wet sand with care. Other smaller children on the beach had colorful buckets and spades.

Their parents sat with wicker picnic baskets on towels and blankets. A breeze came up. Cynthia stood alone. She had always been a loner, always waiting to be called upon before she joined up with any group. She did not have a favorite clique that she belonged to. The popular girls, the girls who were in the choir, the girls who wore spectacles and were a bit of a smart alec, clever and 'much too big for their boots' the teachers liked to say, the girls who were in-betweeners, Those were the girls who were not bullied and who did not really stand out academically or do sports or stand out in anything else really.

Then there were the class clowns, the children who were a bit slow, one or two who were hyper and had been kept back a here in school who stood a head taller than the other children.
'Cynthia, do not just stand there looking like that. Come join us. '
Cynthia smiled back, hesitating for just a second and then she ran down to the water.

She pretended to be scared like the other children and ran away from the waves and then she got the nerve up.

Cynthia was not used to the heat. Were she came from there had been no sprinkler in a secured garden to jump through to resist the summer rays.

She wished she was clever enough like Princess to say something back quickly; A tart retort.

She looked around her at the people on the beach who were tanning themselves –
They looked like slices of toast, burnt at the edges and rubbed with something greasy like butter. After intermittent intervals they would turn over rubbing creamy sunscreen on their skin unafraid of being sunburnt. She caught others sunbathing; Mothers watching over their children in the shallow rock pools with their fishing poles.

She saw a teenager boy carrying a girl on his back piggyback style, other teenage couples calling each other 'Babe' or 'Babes' who stood in a large circle and were throwing a Frisbee around to each other. There was also a couple who could have been a husband and wife or girlfriend and boyfriend sleeping on their backs on the steps that led down to the beach. The man was not wearing a shirt. He had put it under his head and was holding onto his wife / girlfriend. Her face was hidden by hair cut into a fashionable bob. Cynthia felt curious envious of them. They were dead to the world around them.

There were people who faces looked like raisins walking their dogs. Their faces were filled with wrinkles. Cynthia was scared of dogs so she kept close to the young pastor and his pretty, young wife. When his wife laughed there was a flash of gold in her mouth.

There was a man with a bald head and a hairy chest of white and gray hair who was nibbling on the ear of a woman who was sunburnt and who bikini top was untied. She lay with her face towards this man who looked a few years older than her. Cynthia could not resist looking. She was wearing a piece of cloth that she had draped like a skirt around her waist. The material looked so feminine. It was a splash of red in a portal, a rainbow sea on the sand of limp bodies covered by flailing tents, beach umbrellas, deck chairs and shrieking children calling out to their parents to watch them swim.

It made Cynthia feel lonely. She wished she had someone to share the secrets of her heart with. On the way to the beach that morning she had had misgivings. She tried to think up of reasons not to go but her mother was not hearing any of it. Her mother had spoken to her firmly that morning. 'You must try to fit in, Cynthia, otherwise how else will you ever fit in when you go to high school one day? How will you make friends? ' So she had given in. She was not built like the other children yet. She was only eleven. The other girls spoke about words like 'monthlies', 'period', 'sanitary pads', 'sex' and 'sexuality'.

When she asked her mother about it all she said was, 'Not now. I'm busy. Besides you're too young to know about things like that. When the time is right I'll sit down with you and talk about the birds and the bees. ' But Cynthia had not the worstest idea of what birds and bees had to do with the periodic table her older brother was studying at the high school. She was also smart, she reasoned. She could also put two and two together. Period. Periodic.

It felt like it belonged completely to another world; A world in which Cynthia was invisible. It, the makeshift skirt that Princess – the head of a gang of girls who were not scared of anything especially authority figures – called a 'sarong' looked like a tent. The woman who ear the fat man with a pot belly was nibbling on had fat, brown arms. They did not seem to have a care in the world. He put his hand on her back and made circles with his fingers, running them up and down. Cynthia stared at them for awhile and then she looked away embarrassed.

She rinsed the seawater out of her hair and the sand off her feet under the open air shower that stood near the steps. The water sent a chill down her spine. It came out with a spurt, then in a rain shower. She washed her face and combed her hair through her fingers with her hoping she would not stand up. She wished she had gone to the salon or had it braided before she had come on this trip.

The sorrow, sadness that sometimes seemed to paralyse her and see into every pore of her skin from the tin roof of the shack She called her head whether it was raining or a to the tip of her toes that skimmed the ground through the Hole in her school shoes and the surfaces she walked on as she walked to and fro from school, running errands for her mother or playing with her friends. They made up games from their imagination.

There was no money for reading books that smelt new with smooth, clean pages, beautiful illustrations and drawings not marked with greasy fingers, creases or dog ears. There was no money for dolls, pizza, toys, puzzles and cards to play snap or rummy with. Christmas was the one time when her family got a hot, home-cooked meal in their bellies. When they feasted on cake her mother's employee's daughters had made especially for them. It was a bit lopsided but the icing could not be beat. It made their eyes water just looking at it.

She had asked her mother so many times in the past few weeks for new shoes but there was no money.

'The hotdogs are ready. Come and get it! '

Everyone stood in a line and once they had got their hands on their food they stood around with their friends, laughing, smiling, talking and trying not to get sand on their wet bathing suits. Some were rubbing themselves dry with their towels. They bit into the bun smeared generously with margarine by the ladies of the church, some who were mothers to the children who had come on this trip. There was enough for seconds if you were lucky to have scoffed your first hotdog quickly. They drank warm Oros, spilling the orange liquid onto the sand when they found breadcrumbs swimming, swirling at the bottom of the white plastic cup.

A group of girls and boys that were in a standard below Cynthia's sat mesmerized by the swarming life in the rock pools. Some had even taken off their shoes and their socks and dangling their feet in the shallow water. Others were investigating the weed and the shells stuck to the rocks with the white, purple and green outsides. Cynthia was drawn to their solemn features as they agreed what they picked up in the seawater, stubbed their toes against the sharp edges and sliced pulsing red slits in their skin.

One girl whose name was Beauty held up a piece of seaweed between her thumb and her forefinger. She held it to her nose and said, 'Ooh, it smells.' They passed it to one another. 'It comes from the sea so how can it smell bad. It smells of the sea. Can not you tell? ' Innocent said. He sang in the Sunday school 'choir in church and he often had solo on on special days like Mother's day or Father's day. He rubbed his fingers against it and then lifted his palm to his face and sniffed. This group of boys and girls had not noticed Cynthia yet or were pretending not to notice her or they were waiting for her to go away and saw her as someone who would put a stop to what they were doing and tell them to go swimming with the Older kids or put their shoes and socks on again or they were simply ignoring her.

The day was almost through. The wind had picked up. The sun was setting. It was a radiant blur in the mid of the afternoon. The youth pastor's wife had yawned once or twice; Her filling glinting gold. Soon the children and their youth leaders would be packing up all their beloveds and making their way to the Putco bus with sand in their shoes, their hair wet, the warm sun on their clothes, their backs and as they went to sleep that night that Day's connection to the sea would still be there; It would have formed a tight yet minority part of Cynthia's life's journey.

It had been a great day. Cynthia had been transformed by it and nourished inwardly by it. She had made new friends; Owen, Winston, Paul, Anthony, Mzimkulu, Eunice, Hazel, Monica, Bulelwa, Judith, Beauty and Kethiwe. Girls and boys who also had English names like she had. The youth pastor was handing out sweets. She unwrapped her lolly and popped it into her mouth as she walked up the stairs into the bus. Her shorts were sticking to her legs.

She did not have any dry clothes to change into but she was smiling and she was happy; The blackness of her skin forgotten. The world around her rushed inside the rooms of her head that were once empty. Now they were filled with memories of her feeling comfortable and accepted as one of the gang; Even Princess had spoken to her.

She closed her eyes briefly, leaned back into the seat fitting the nape of her neck into the shiny, metallic groove of the headrest of the chair. She waved as the bus groaned and shook.

'All aboard.' Pastor Matthew said grinning, counting heads as the bus door swoosed closed.

21st Century Concept of Science

For so long science has been considered as a subject but in the 21st century science will be relative to individuals "mental illuminatory wave length". Science is more than a subject. It is knowledge made possible by a mind quality which researches, explores and unveils the nature, behavior and operational dynamics of matter.

Everything operates on a science. The science of matter is the hidden dimension of the nature of matter which defines its behavior and operational dynamics. "Deep calls for deep" is the scientific revelation of the 21st century.

The 'deep' of matter is the hidden dimension of the nature of matter which defines its behavior and operational dynamics. The 'deep' of man, is the hidden dimension of the human mind, which possesses illuminatory strength which can perceive and understand the hidden dimensions of matter without practical experiments or laboratory activities.

This implications, the scientific breakthroughs of the 21st century will be products of scientific minds which can ascend into knowledge without pre-experimental activities.

Thus, the laboratory of the 21st century science will not be buildings with instruments for experiments but human minds.

The human mind: This is the seat of true science. The human mind is the largest component of the human soul. Its abilities are beyond human physiological comprehension. In fact, it is the most unexploited realm of human existence.

The human mind possessabilities which when released in full efficiency, can affect the world positively in all areas. The human mind possesses illuminatory strength which can penetrate into the core of matter, bringing out the hidden dimensions of its operative dynamics.

The mind is the greatest research center with four powerful faculties. Creative, thinking, reasoning imaginative faculties. Each of these faculties possesses infinite and unlimited capabilities and can operate in relativity with others for maximum productivity.

When the human mind is developed through illumination and regeneration, the four faculties of the mind begin a journey of equal and relative operation for maximum exhibition of mental exactitude. At this level the hidden dimensions of matter can be assessed without any form of physical experimental activities. This is the breakthrough which awaits humanity in the 21st century.

With respect to this concept, the scientific focus of the 21st century will be based on mind illumination and regeneration through the impact of positive and quality knowledge. As human minds develop in their "illuminatory wave length", scientific evolutions and revolutions will be the natural outlet.

The limits of experimental science: This is the science which depends on experiments for its conclusive analysis. It has given birth to scientific breakthroughs which are characterized by constant errors and failures because most experimental analysis are not 100% accurate, but based on trial and error. Many people are dying from plane crash, medical side effects, etc. There are so many imbalances and errors with virtually every scientific breakthrough of the 20th century.

Humanity must leave the trial and error scientific tactics to science based on exactitude. This breakthrough will be relative to the degree of mental illumination and exactitude.

Scientific exactitude: This is a scientific dimension based on mental exactitude in scientific analysis. Exactitude is a level of accurate or exact analysis based on "hyper illumination". This degree of illumination is not possible without Divine knowledge. Divine knowledge is the infinite omniscient dimension of knowledge equal and relative to the infinite dimension of the mind. It contains the original principals which define all of life's operative dynamics.

When the human mind develops into higher mental altitudes based on illumination, its creativity and productivity becomes exact. This is the base of the 21st century scientific revolution.

The Basics Of Fly Fishing: Getting It Right

You take the time to get into just the right location in that great stream that your friend told you about. You have been waiting for so long to enjoy this time, alone, fishing to your heart’s content. There are many amazing moments in life but fly fishing is one of your favorite. You’ll get into the waders, getting into just that right location so that you can cast.

The tip of your rod should be in the four o’ clock position with 20 feet (6 meters) of line extended beyond your rod’s tip. Trap the line between the rod handle and your index finger. To begin the back cast, bend your elbow, raise your forearm and move the rod tip from four o’clock to eleven thirty and lift the line from the water. Pause for a moment at this point to allow the line to extend behind you before casting the rod forward. Allow the rod to follow through as the line extends to its full length in front of you. Then continue to work the line in this manner. A fish strikes. The fight is on and you successfully land the fish. This is fly casting.

Fly fishing is an old method of angling. It was primarily developed to catch trout and salmon. Today, it is still used to fish these species, but is also used to catch bass, carp, pike and a wide range of saltwater fish. The difference between casting and fly fishing is that in casting you use the weight of your bait, sinker and bobber to propel your cast. In fly fishing, the weight of the line propels your line forward and puts your fly into position. The fly cannot do this, as it is essentially weightless. The goal in fly fishing is to present the fly gently and to always be in control of it.

When you fly fish, you need special fishing equipment that includes a fly rod and reel, a special fly fishing line and artificial or live flies. These are tied onto your hook with feathers, fur, thread or other materials in colors and sizes that represent natural prey. The key to successful fly fishing is balance. The rod, reel and line, as well as the tippet all have to match in order to have a positive fly fishing experience.

Rod, Reels and Lines

Fly fishing rods are lightweight and long. The line provides the casting weight and is heavy. It can be of differing density, depending on whether you want the fly to sink or float. Line is matched to your rod by weight. Look near the fly rod butt to find out what line weight must be used. Graphite rods are best because they can produce any action that you wish to use. If you are a beginner, buy a basic and moderately priced rod, or borrow one from a family member or friend.

Flies and Leaders

Flies weigh very little. The fly is usually attached to the line by a leader that is two to three meters in length (6 to 9 feet). The leader often tapers to a fine end. This is called a tippet. Tippet size range from 8X, which is the smallest, to 0X, which is the largest. Tippets are set in units of .001 inches. To match the tippet to the fly, you must subtract from eleven and multiply by .001.

For example to find the diameter of a 4X tippet, you would subtract four from eleven. That equals seven. Now, multiply by .001. This size would be .007. What if you have a # 18 fly? How would you calculate tippet size? You would put eighteen over four and calculate. The answer would be 4.5. Since there is no 4.5 X tippet, you would move to the next largest size, which would be 5.

Types of Fly Fishing

There are two types of fly fishing – dry and wet. Wet flies are fished beneath the water surface and are divided into several types, including live wet flies, lures and nymphs. Dry flies float on the water surface and are coated with a substance called, ‘floatant’ to make this possible.

If you are interested in fly fishing and can’t decide which equipment you need to have a positive fishing experience, ask an experienced angler for help. This can be a family member, friend, someone from the local angler’s club or a staff member of the local fly fishing shop. Fly fishing is not as hard to learn as it appears to be. Have fun and enjoy that big catch.

The best way to enjoy your catch is to take the time to enjoy the many wonders that the fishing experience offers. No matter what that first adventure turns out to be, you can make it amazing by spending some time learning the skills from an experienced fisherman.

We Have to Call at the Top!

Conventional sales "wisdom" encourages us to "call at the top." Sales people constantly seek the "C-Level" executives, looking for anyone that has a "Chief" in their title-surprisingly customers are accommodating us with CMO's, CIO's, CFO's and so forth. We're taught to call at the top-things move faster, we do not have to worry about all the users, just find the top executive, pitch them, and everything will go fast.

I often coach sales people on their deal strategies. Always, I hear, "We need to figure out a way to get to the CIO," or "If only we could get to the CEO, we could push this deal faster." When I ask, "Why do you want to do this?" They look at me as if I had two heads, responding, "We have to call at the top-we want to focus on people with the power." To which, I respond, "Why do you want to do this?" They're now starting to think, "What's up with this guy? He's supposed to be the guy to coach me? Does not he get it?"

After an uncomfortable pause, they are trying to figure out how to get out of this meeting, I try to clarify, "Why do they -or should they care about what you do?" The response is, "Well they are the top guys. Are they important to us?" I usually am forced to ask, "Why do they – or should they care about what you do?" And we start that same old cycle over.

What we really need to be focusing on is, "Are we calling on the right levels?" An old college used to call this right-level selling. Right level selling is about engaging everyone involved in the decision who "cares" about the solutions we represent or the problems we solve.

Let me give an example. A number of years ago a bright sales manager, I'll call him Bill, came to me and said, "Dave, I understand you know Frank, the COO of 'Mega-corporation." I like you to arrange a call we Can make on him. '"I respond," I do know Frank, he's a great guy. "Why do you want to do this? Bill was ready for me, "Mega-corporation is our larges customer. We do millions every year with them. I'd like to understand how we can support them better, how we can grow our relationship, absolutely increasing our sales.? I Said, "But why is it important for us to talk to Frank about this?" Bill was ready, "Well he's the top guy. We really need to reach him if we are going to realize our full potential at the account? "You can guess my next question," Why does he care? "Bill was persistent," They spend a lot of money with us, we really Need to talk to Frank, he's the top guy. "I stopped there.

I called Frank asking, "Frank, I think I need your help …" I explained to Frank what was happening. I told him that Bill was a very high potential sales manager, but he needed a "coaching experience." I asked Frank if he would mind helping me out. I really wanted to create a computing experience for Bill and develop him to his full potential-so that he could develop his people to their heads. Frank laught and agreed to a meeting – though he did extract promise for me to take him to a very expensive private dinner on the evening of the appointment.

Now let me explain a moment. Frank was COO of Mega-corporation. He had over 75,000 people working for him, was responsible for 10's of Billions in revenue, and Mega-corporation's rank in the Fortune 500 was in the low double digits.

The appointed day came. Bill had searched everything about our current relationship. He had analyzed the customer. He had prepared for the call, wanting to make a major step forward with this customer through building a relationship with Frank. As we got off the elevator on the "executive floor," the air was already rarefied. An assistant met us and assisted us down executive row. We struggled a little-the carpeting was so thick and plush, we could have used snow shoes.

At the end of executive row, we went into Frank's office-or I should say suite. I could tell, Bill was a little overwhelmed-I was too, and I had been there before.

Frank was as gracious as anyone could have expected. Bill opened the call, he thanked Frank for his time. He explained to Frank the long history between our organizations and how important his company was to ours. Bill asked Frank what his priorities were and how we could better support he and the entire organization in achieving their goals.

Frank responded, "Let me think about that a moment." He paused – I'm sure to Bill it looked like hours passed, it was only about 10 seconds. Frank went on, "These are the things I spend my time on … This is what keeps me awake at night …" To Bill, who was focused on our products, I'm sure it sounded as though Frank was describing How to achieve world peace or solve world hunger. Frank asked, "How can you help me do this?"

Bill's face turned white. He did not know what to say. The truth was, the problems we solved were important to people somewhere in Frank's organization, but they were not important to Frank. They were not anywhere on his radar screen.

Mega-corporation was an important account for us-they were our largest customer. I jumped in and asked Frank to help us understand his organization and who we should be working with (fortunately, Frank and I had talked about this beforehand). We went into the conference room, on one wall was the organization chart. Frank went on to explain, "This vice president-five levels below me- is the highest level person that cares about the problems you solve. You really need to be focusing on him and the people in his organization that are impacted by what you do While, what you do is important to our company-it is not important to me because I count on these people to do their jobs and to do the best thing for our organization. " Frank continued, "We spend a good amount of money on you. I've checked with our people, you have supported us well, they like your solutions and service. Involved in what they do, they do their jobs well and I'll support them. I really do not have the time or care to be involved in what you are doing because it does not have a direct impact on what I worry about . "

Frank was (and still is) a very gracious executive. He gave Bill one of the greatest development opportunities possible. Bill had the opportunity to "call at the top," and learned-a little painfully-that calling at the top is not what is needed.

Right-Level Selling is critical to our success as sales professionals. We need to call on the people who are responsible for the problems we solve. We need to focus on those people who "care" or have a vested interest in what we can do for them. We need to call on the users, problem owners, recommenders and influencers. Yes, we should call high-but only as high as the problem is important. If we can not answer the questions "Why should they care about us" in a compiling manner, they are not the right people for us to call on. If the problems that we resolve are not their top priorities, then we are wasting their and our time.

Are you calling at the Right Level, or are you trying to call at the top? Are you investing your time in the people that really care about what you can do, or are you just following "traditional wisdom?"

5 Surprising Benefits Of Having A Double Oven

The kitchen serves as the main hub for many families, mainly because it is one of the few rooms in the house where everyone in the family will congregate at one time. A centerpiece to many kitchens is the double oven and for good reason. Or is it?

In recent years, consumers have mulled over the option of the type of oven for their kitchen. For some, the idea means ‘double’ the work to keep things clean and operational, which isn’t quite accurate. In fact, there are a number of reasons why a double oven not only makes for a nice addition to a kitchen but can be vital for the operation of the kitchen itself.

Here are five surprising benefits of having a double oven in your home:

1. Efficient Time Saver – We live in a “go-go-go” world, and the things around us have to be able to work with speed & efficiency. When it comes to our cooking, though, we don’t want to skimp on providing a good meal for the whole family. Rather than using a traditional single oven, the double oven allows main dishes & side dishes to be made at the same time. Moreover, the advent of the single-sheet meals allows for more work to be done with less to wash, which is yet another time saver.

2. People Can Afford Them More than Ever – The age of the home chef/”foodie” is in full effect, and along with this new change in priorities when it comes to food is the manner in which we are preparing our food. There was a time when bigger ovens in a larger, high-end home was the only viable option outside of a commercial kitchen. As with most things, though, the more the market has opened up for consumers seeking an affordable double oven option, the more manufacturers have answered with more options at lower price points.

3. A Key Item for Entertaining – There are many individuals that absolutely enjoy entertaining friends and family. Sometimes, the occasions are small & intimate, while others are quite involved. By using something other than a standard oven, you leave more time to mingle with guests as opposed to going back & forth between trays of treats. Maybe your entertainment is based on you hosting the family for holiday meals. By being able to do more in the same amount of time, you save yourself a lot of work.

4. Appeals to the Space-Conscious Consumer – Oven options for the individual mindful of a small or unique kitchen layout can acquire an oven that is vertically oriented (one over the other). Plus, there are models that take up as much space as a regular single oven! New ovens are also great because they have other features & functions that can save space from additional heat-related appliances in the kitchen.

5. Tools Aim to Help – Humans look for tools that make their life easier, and with that aim, the double oven is aimed at the homeowner looking to add another tool to their kitchen arsenal. If you enjoy cooking, this is not only a tremendous tool, but it also will revolutionize your approach to food.

How Long Does Carpet Cleaning Take? A Guide For Customers

The short answer for how long does carpet cleaning take is: anywhere between 5 minutes and 3 days. Depending on the size of the area cleaned, its condition and stuff standing in the way of the cleaner (desks and chairs for example). In addition, there is time needed for the carpets to dry which should be added to the service time.

Now here’s the long answer

There are several factors that can influence how long the carpet cleaning will take to complete, as well as the length of time it will take for the carpet to dry afterwards.

  1. Size of area to be cleaned – the rule of thumb regarding carpet cleaning is usually 20 minutes per room for small rooms (bedrooms, hallways), and 30 minutes per room for large rooms (master bedrooms, living rooms, etc.). However, this is only a rule of thumb and not something you can depend upon. If the carpet is heavily soiled, stained, or just hasn’t been cleaned for a long time, several runs will be needed on the same areas, adding more time to the carpet cleaning. In addition, every run of the carpet cleaning wand adds more time to the drying time.
  2. The condition of the carpets – as mentioned above, heavy soiling, lots of grease or just some hard to remove stains can add a lot of time to carpet cleaning. Basically, a more soiled carpet will require a more thorough approach, including pre-spray and maybe even agitation with a special machine. This can add on another 10-20 minutes per room, not including set up time which may be a few more minutes.
  3. What the carpet is made of – Natural fibers take longer to dry than synthetic fibers, and also require a different treatment. Natural fibers are more delicate. In addition, they don’t repel stains and grease like most synthetic fibers do. In general, natural fibers like wool would require a more strict maintenance routine and more frequent cleaning to keep them looking their best.
  4. Additional solutions applied – Depending on the condition of your carpets and your requirements, there may be additional steps to carpet cleaning – pre-spray before the cleaning, or application of protector after the carpet cleaning is done. Each of these steps applies more fluid to the carpet, and creates more moisture that needs to dry. These steps can add as much as half an hour to the carpet cleaning, and can lengthen the drying time by two hours or more.
  5. Weather conditions – Carpet cleaning time isn’t affected much by the weather conditions (though bad weather can affect the set up time, making it harder to get everything ready for the cleaning). However, drying time is affected vastly by weather conditions.

The carpet cleaning is done inside. When the weather cold, rainy, or even very humid, there is no option to air out a room and let fresh air inside. Good ventilation helps carpet dry more quickly, so bad ventilation can greatly increase drying time, Drying times can even double if the house is very cold with little or no air movement.

  6. Air movement – carpet in a well aired room with several windows, or even a ceiling fan would be able to dry faster than in a closed room with no air flow. Sometimes during winter, if your carpet cleaner can allow it, he will lay out a few drying fans to shorten the drying time of the carpets. Not all carpet cleaners do this, so if this is important to you ask about it before you schedule your appointment. This can greatly reduce drying time if the weather requires the house to stay shut (and there is no air ventilation system available – an HVAC unit you can turn on or a fan that will air the rooms).

How long will it take to clean my carpets?

We suggest you clear 1.5-2 hours for the cleaning appointment, and 6-8 hours for drying time of the carpets (but can go up to as much as 24 hours depending on the conditions). If you have the option, choose warmer weather for your carpet cleaning appointment.

Even if the cleaning appointment will take a lot of time, it is well worth your time. All the odors removed, the looks of the carpets renewed again, and the whole fresh feeling of the home.

Are Pigs Useful to Us?

They are generally not liked by many of us because of their dirty habits. We are talking about pigs. Domestic pigs belong to the genus Sus and family Suidae which comprises even-toed ungulates. Pigs are omnivorous in habit. Though they are famous for gluttony nature but they are social and intelligent mammals. Pig and hog are the common names used for the domestic pigs. Some scientists consider domestic pigs and wild boars as similar species. Pigs are characterized by a snout for nose, small eyes, a small tail which may be curled or straight. Body is thick with short legs provided with coarse hairs. Four toes are present on each foot with two large middle ones are used for walking.

Breeding period continues throughout the year in tropical regions but the maximum percentage of births has been noticed during the rainy season. A female pig is capable of giving birth to the young ones at the age of 8-18 months. Estrus cycle will then commence after an interval of every 21 days if she fails to breed. Male pigs become sexually mature at the age of 8-10 months. A litter of piglets is composed of 6-12 piglets. Under the conditions of severe stress pigs can eat their own young ones. Pigs lack functional sweat glands so they keep their bodies cool by submerging it in water or mud during the summer season. Mud is also used as a sunscreen to protect the body from sunburn. Mud also provides protection against the flies and the parasites. Head is generally large with a long snout provided with a specialized prenasal bone demarcated by the presence of cartilage at its tip. Snout is used for digging in soil and in finding food. It is a very useful sensory organ. There are 44 teeth in the mouth of pigs. Canine are also called as tusks, grow continuously. They are sharpened by continuous rubbing of canines of both upper and lower jaws.

Around 2 billion species of animals are alive in the modern world of which domesticated pig is one of the most frequent in occurrence. Apart from the domesticated species wild boar is also found in good numbers on earth. Its many subspecies are most commonly found in Eurasia and its islands, from Ireland and India to Japan and north to Siberia. Some commonly occurring species of pigs include wild boars, bearded pigs and warty pigs. Man has introduced pigs in Australia, North and South America. Domestic pigs are reared as livestock by the farmers for the purpose of meat and leather. The bristly hairs are used for making brushes. Some species are also kept as pets like the Asian pot-bellied pig. A close watch is kept over the domestic pigs by swineherds. Pigs are excellent in foraging activity and their sense of smell is excellent so they are used in finding truffles in many European countries. They feed on both plant and animal stuffs indicating that they are omnivores. In wild they feed on leaves, grasses, roots, fruits and flowers.

Pigs have been domesticated since a long time in the Old World. Archaeological evidence suggests that the management of pigs in the olden times followed the same procedure as is used by the modern farmers. Wild boars were domesticated by the New Guineans as early as 13,000-12,700 BP in the near East and the Tigris Basin. A separate technique of domestication of pigs was later on given by China. In India pigs have been domesticated since times immemorial in Goa and other rural areas especially for the pig toilets. Pig toilets are used in the septic tanks. Pigs have reached Europe and southeastern North America by a Spanish traveler Hernando de Soto. They are highly valued in China and other neighbouring islands. Domesticated pig is designated by the scientific name Sus scrofa while others call it S. domesticus and the term S. scrofa is allotted to the wild boar. The domestication of S. domesticus began 5,000-7,000 years ago. Their body covering is coarse and bristly. They are brown are in colour but become grey as they grow old. Head ranges in size from 0.9-1.8 m in length and the body weight averages 50-350 kg.

They are intelligent animals and can be trained for certain tasks and tricks. The dwarf breeds are kept as pets in houses. They deserve a special place in culture and religion. Domestic pigs that have escaped from farms and the wild boars that were introduced in the forests as prey for hunting have given rise to a large population of the feral pigs in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and other areas where pigs were earlier absent. The uprooting of plants by pigs in forests has shaken the ecological balance. They eat small animals and destroy the nests of ground dwelling birds. They are houses of a number of parasites and diseases that are transmitted to humans. These include cysticercosis, trichinosis and brucellosis. They are known to carry a number of parasitic worms inside their digestive tract. The flesh of pigs containing these parasites causes diseases in humans. So before the consumption of pig flesh proper care should be taken. They are also susceptible to bronchitis and pneumonia as the lungs are very small in size as compared to the body so these diseases can kill the pig. They also act as reservoirs of viruses like the swine flu virus and the influenza virus. They can become aggressive if disturbed resulting in severe injuries on the victim’s body.

It is now very clear that pigs are social animals so should be hated as they are very valuable to human beings.

The Rats Of Yodok

The rats of Yodok.

I imagine that the rats of Yodok should be entered as an endangered species, for their numbers dwindle rapidly. The good news for us is that a solution has been found for over-population of rats, where they might be found. The solution is to starve the human population of the area to such a frightful degree that the desperate bipeds will value rats as fine cuisine.

I speak with bitterness and sarcasm of the bright, not of rats, but of Christians, in North Korea. Will anyone hear our plea? Will someone come to the aid of the people of North Korea? Especially those of the household of faith that we value so dearly?

Forgive me. I failed to tell you what is Yodok. Maybe you know?

I speak of a concentration camp, officially Kwan-li-so number 15, located an hour's drive northeast of Pyongyang, North Korea. One hour southeast of that capital is the world class city of Seoul, South Korea.

I am gleaning facts about this place from a Wikipedia article entitled "Yodok."

Yodok is surrounded by mountains, at one time concealed away from humanity's eyes. Mr. Kim in the big city still claims it is not there, as do all the puppets assisting his lies. Aerial surveillance and escaped prisoners tell us the truth.

The camp is divided into two parts. A revolutionary zone is reserved for those who tried to leave the heavenly time, either physically or by radio. Perhaps they even dared to criticize the perfection of the Pyongyang government. They are handed a sentence, they serve it, they go. There were well under 20,000 prisoners in this section in the 1990's. Today, more significantly.

Part two was made for you and me. That is, our family members. The Christians. People associated with Japan or any others upon whom Pyongyang can not really be sent there too. Perhaps 6,000 Christian believers inhabit this place as I write, of the total 30,000 or more residents.

These prisoners are never released.

Never.

A few have escaped. Some who did were incredible artists, and have drawn for us the pictures that match up with the aerial photographs perfectly. They remember. Oh do they remember.

Those who in any way are associated with the "guilt" are sent to prison with them. All family members, to several generations. Thus the total control over the minds of the people. Some might be willing to go public with their faith or their feelings for their own sakes, but most are usually not willing to risk the welfare of grandchildren, babes in arms, or many-decades-old grandparents.

The housing accommodations: huts made of mud with straw roofs. Wooden planks are the floor. Sleeping is on a wooden bed made for 30-40 prisoners. There is no heat. North Korean winters can easily go below zero. This translates into frostbite and swollen limbs, pneumonia, TB, and more. With no available medical treatment.

Wardrobe: You may be wearing the clothes of the last prisoner. Who died in them. Dead are buried naked. Your other clothing is a solid layer of dirt, gathered over the years. Very little opportunity to wash.

No need even to comment on the odor of that mud hut.

Toilets are community, one for every 200 prisoners. Toilet paper: dry leaves.

Much of North Korea's labor is performed by these slave prisoners. There are mines, plants, distilleries. There is agriculture and logging. There are no safety measures in place. Just get the work done. 4 am to 8 pm is your shift. Without your quota is not met.

After "dinner" it is class time. Reeducation. You obviously just need to hear the truth over and over. The truth about the Kims and Juche, that is. Can not meet quotas? Can not memorize instructions handed down by the Kims? Expect a beating, sleep deprivation or less food.

The children have their own version of school in the morning. You can imagine the subject matter. In the afternoon they are sent to work with the old people. Beatings all around for those who can not keep up. "Keep up" means carry heavy logs 12 times, lift 70 pound buckets of human waste 30 times. Primary aged children.

But we were speaking of rats. Food rations are 5-6 ounces of corn gruel 3 times a day. Or less. Obviously they need supplements. Not the kind in bottles that we take every morning, but the kind found on the ground. Rats, snakes, worms, insects. But woe be to the prisoner who is trying to fatten himself in this way. That's why these treasures are eaten raw, and whole, and quickly.

Even so, 20% of the prisoners can die each year from malnutrition alone.

There is more. We both grow weary in the telling. The information is all offline.

Scores of human rights organizations have banded together to protest, and demand the immediate closure of Yodok and all the other Korean camps. But they still stand.

Now, how can we obey Hebrews 13: 3 in the light of such evil? "Remember the prisoners as though bound with them."

I do not believe God wants his people to start eating rats. But despite a fast is in order. Perhaps a cut-back of the number of church suppers and church lunches and church breakfasts and church snacks and …

It is good for Christians to share meals together. But we have taken it to extremes. We want all our creature comforts to follow us from the world into the church doors.

Will we have to put pictures of Yodok in our church kitchens to awaken people? Those 6,000 people are separated from us only geographically. Can we not enter their world just a little bit?

And let us beg the God of Heaven to intervene for those whose only crime is knowing Jesus.

Doghouse Plans – How to Build and Plan a Doghouse

After a spate of burglaries in our area my wife and I decided to get a dog, a yard dog that is. After visiting the local animal shellter we claimed to a rather fine looking, medium sized cross – crossed with what being hard to say.

Before bringing the dog home we needed to get a kennel and luckily I already had a set of plans for various outbuildings and they included a few different doghouse plans. I had previously built a garden shed so I had all the tools I needed and some leftover wood too.

The doghouse plans I decided on had a list of all the materials I needed and fortunately the timber left over from the garden shed was ideal. After leaving out what I already had from the shed I took my list to the local hardware store and made my purchases. Having a good set of plans meant I only had to make one visit.

My doghouse plans were very detailed and so easy to follow that I had a great looking kennel built in less than a day.

At four o'clock my wife and I collected the dog, now christened Tommy (do not ask) from the dog pound and introduced him to his new home.

After having a sniff round the yard (and dampening down most of the fence posts) Tommy settled down in his new kennel as if he never never left it.

Two weeks later and we have a safe house and a great new addition to the family, oh, and the walks are doing me good too.

5 Reasons Why You Need To Use An Epilator

You must have heard about epilators but the thought of removing unwanted hair directly from the root by using an epilator can seem quite scary at first. Before I started epilating, I read tons of reviews, some talked about how it made their skin soft and smooth while others ranted about the unbearable pain it caused. I still remember how confused and unsure I was as to whether I should go ahead and place the order or give it a pass. I gave my instinct a chance and went ahead with the purchase. Days later the much awaited parcel arrived. I held the electronic device in my hand and angled it at 90 degrees against my leg. I was yet to switch on the device. The mere thought of switching on the epilator made me certain that I would scream my head off. Fortunately that was not the case with me. It did hurt a bit in the beginning, something very similar to the pain you experience when someone pinches you. However, they are not as painful as you imagine- on the contrary it is more bearable than waxing and with repeated use, you get more used to it.

Ready to take a look at the top 5 reasons that will make you want to make the switch to this amazing electronic device?

Skin Friendly

The biggest boon that comes with epilators is the fact that these small wonders are ideal for everyone. People with sensitive skin might have ruled out numerous hair removal methods owing to the sensitive nature of their skin but not anymore. The beauty of epilators lies in the fact that they don’t pull the skin while removing unwanted hair. Unlike waxing, shaving or hair removal creams, epilators work independently and doesn’t need to be teamed up with any chemicals or soaps.

Long Lasting Results

The best way to stop those unwanted hairs from growing back real soon is by plucking them from the roots. Epilators are extremely effective in plucking hairs from the roots and nothing gets better than this! With the traditional options like waxing and shaving, you are sure to re-grow unwanted hair in a matter of 7-14 days with an additional promise of stubble. On the contrary, epilators prevents re-growth of hair for up to 4 weeks. Now, isn’t that amazing!

Gets Rid of the Smallest of Hairs

Epilators have been brilliantly designed to remove hairs as short as 0.5mm, now that’s really tiny. Unlike waxing, you don’t have to wait to let your hair grow back to considerable length before getting it effectively waxed. Now removing the smallest of hairs is possible anytime.

Portability

Epilators are really small in size and takes the least amount of space in your bag. So if you are out on a long vacation and you cannot find a salon nearby, you need not worry coz you have this little genius by your side.

Inexpensive

Epilators are a one-time investment so invest in a good epilator, for a good investment goes a long way. Epilators have a reputation of providing long lasting effect without being too heavy on the pocket.

With so many online shops available, getting your hands on an effective epilator is just a click away. Happy Shopping!

Chiropractic Analysis of Infant Torticollis

Infant torticollis or wry neck, which is observed at birth or within the first few weeks following birth, is known as congenital torticollis. The ideologies are many, and it is critical initially to differentiate variety of pathological causes prior to applying chiropractic treatment.

Comprehensive case history and examination, including neurological an orthopedic evaluation is essential in determining whether the torticollis is primarily musculo-skeletal, and therefore biomechanical in nature. The diagnoses to eliminate include traumatic fractures of the cranium, cervical vertebrae, sternum or clavicles, tumors are neoplasms of the brainstem, spinal cord, vertebral column and related soft tissue structures, congenital anomalies of the cranium and cervical vertebrae, and infections of the brainstem, spinal cord, vertebral column and cervico-thoracic soft tissues.

Torticollis is characterized by unilateral hypertonicity or spasm of the sterno-cleido-mastoid (SCM) muscle, often associated with a palpable mass due to the fibrotic contracture or hematoma in the belly of the muscle.

The etiologies are diverse. The most common cause is in-utero constraint, a traumatic event during the descent of the baby through the birth canal, or the application of forceps or vacuum extraction during the delivery process. The frank breech presentation is associated with a high incidence of torticollis, up to 34% of infants born in this position being affected.

The case history and/or referral mechanism is frequently attributed to a baby that prefers nursing from one breast only, with extreme fussiness and agitation on the other side. But all other potential breast-feeding problems have been eliminated, chiropractic spinal examination may prove revealing to a diagnosis of torticollis.

Parents may often observed that the infant has a favorite head position when sleeping or lying in the car seat, and this is a valuable question to be asked in the case history for every child. Torticollis may not always be visually observed by the parents or caregivers, and a line of questioning to eliminate the possibility should be routine in any case history.

It is also a value to inquire of the parents whether or not the infant is sensitive to touch around the neck and suboccipital areas. Additionally, although the biomechanical patterns for congenital torticollis may exist at birth, there may be no visual indications until the infant attempting to raise and maintain its head somewhat upright, certainly not until 2 to 4 weeks of age, sometimes later. Therefore, in all likelihood, the astute chiropractor maybe the first healthcare provider to identify the torticollis in the early days and weeks.

The clinical picture is most often that of the infant’s head laterally flexed towards the involved side, with con-commitment rotation towards the opposite shoulder. There may or may not be a presentation of cranial and facial moulding, most commonly brachioplagiocephaly where there is flattening of the occiput, parietal, and temporal bones unilaterally, and sometimes associated mandibular asymmetry.

Using a measuring tape, measure from the external occipital protuberance around to the midline of the frontal bone at the top of the nose, comparing the two sides, left and right, in distance. Confirm accuracy of your measurements by measuring the entire circumference of the head, the total of which should be equal to the sum of your two measurements for left and right.

Upon passive range of motion testing, the infant maybe a rigid in the affected ranges of motion, or expressed discomfort and distress to even light palpation attempt to move the head and neck. Segmental motion palpation is useful in determining the primary affected spinal segments.

Scientific research illustrates cervical spine involvement to be present in as many as 50% of cases of congenital torticollis. The most commonly involved segments are C-O C-1 C-2, displaying a subluxation pattern of C1 anterior rotation on the opposite side of SCM contracture.

The upper thoracic segments are often biomechanically compromised as well, examination of compensatory subluxation complex. Gentle suboccipital traction and stretching of the SCM muscle is a value clinically, and also taught as a home technique to the parents. This is performed by cautiously laterally flexing the infants neck to the side away from the torticollis, then gradually easing into rotation of the head towards the side of torticollis. This position can be held for 5 to 10 seconds, slowly released, and repeated 3 to 5 times during each session. They should only be performed on the infant is calm and relaxed, not one hungry nor fussy. Repeat the process every 3-4 hours.

This short article is not exhaustive of the information known about congenital torticollis. A specific chiropractic evaluation, by a trained chiropractor, can be the first step in assessing and correcting the underlying cause of the infant’s torticollis.

How To Get Your Subscribers Begging For More

It has become very common among many websites and online businesses to gather a list of subscribers (or in other words "potential customers") and send them promotional materials in order to boost their sales or to increase visitors to their websites. Such a marketing strategy is called Opt-In Email Marketing. It includes sending newsletters, catalogs updates and all sorts of other promotional materials weekly, monthly or annually to people who have visited the websites and readilyave their emails so that they could learn more about what the website is promoting.

By sending emails to the subscribers on a regular basis, it allows subscribers to be updated about new products. Should anything grab their attention, they could be directed straight to where they can learn more or to even purchase it. At the same time, Opt-In Emails serve as reminders to subscribers about the existence of those websites that they had previously visited. Thus, Opt-In Emails do have many advantages and should be viewed as a powerful marketing tool.

However, as powerful as a weapon is, it can only be as powerful as its user. The same goes for Opt-In Emailing. A well organized and well written email can be so effective that it causes subscribers to eagerly click the direct link and reach into their wallets before they even realize it. That is how powerful and persuasive Opt-In emails can get.

Different websites and businesses have their own style of presenting information to subscribers. However, if one goes beyond the fanciful expressions and facades, it all boils down to creativity in the content of the email that keeps the subscribers interested.

After analyzing some effective Opt-In emails and forums, I have come to grasp the essence of good Opt-In Marketing strategies. First, keep the content light when trying to promote. In this stressful society, people are already stressed out enough at work. The last thing they need is to come home to another boring, boring and long "business proposal" sent by you. Make the content something personal such that the person reading your email feels like they are being introduced to some good "lobang" (for non-Singaporeans that would mean business opportunity) by a fellow "kakis" (buddies or friends) over coffee. Let go of all the formal jargons and write the content like how you would introduce it to a friend. In this way, subscribers would not feel as though it is just another business gimmick.

As the phrase goes, a picture paints a thousand words. So what about a few pictures? Let your creative juices flow when brainstorming over the presentation of the material in your email to your subscribers. Add color to your words. Bold the information that you want your subscribers to pay the most attention to. And if in some cases pictures are the most effective in trying to capture what you're trying to bring across, do not hesitate to throw a few pictures in. After all, what captures more attention? A bunch of pictures or many lines or words?

A good Opt-in email is able to highlight the benefits of the products or services in a short and concise manner. The last thing you want is to bombard your subscribers with lots information and appear overaggressive to them. This would cause them to avoid your emails or worst unsubscribe to you. Always keep in mind that your subscribers are your audience and you need to be able to entertain them in order to keep them so that ever they would buy your products from you.

First-time subscribers would tend to be very cynical towards all sorts of promotional material being presented to them. Therefore it is important that you present information clearly. Ensure that the content in the emails explain exlicitly what needs to be done so that results that they desire can be achieved. The last thing you want is a confused and frustrated subscriber as they would always give up trying and so would your opportunity to seal a deal. Being able to anticipate common doubts or questions would be an added bonus. It would seem from the customer's point of view that you are trying to help rather than just trying to make money off them.

The Professor of Poker

Known fondly as The Professor in the Poker circles, Howard Lederer initially had a penchant for chess. He did not take time to get hooked to poker played at the same club he played chess. Understandably, both being mind games! Working relentlessly for almost 70-80 hrs a week initially, Poker was the only thing on Howard’s mind when he discovered the game. “Haste makes waste” was the lesson he learned and took off slowly but steadily from thereon. The Professor’s game really progressed at the Mayfair Club which was considered to be the most prestigious bridge and backgammon club in those days. He played his way up and was one of the initial members of the No-Limit Holdem format when it was first adopted in New York. Everyone being new to the game only helped. Since there was no then restrain on trying out new things.

Quoting Richard Bach, “You teach best what you most need to learn”; Howard’s lessons to his sister Annie Duke proved invaluable for himself. As she progressed in the game, her questions became more challenging, which ultimately raised the bar for both of them. They were the first brother sister duo to make it to the Final WSOP poker table where the student outsmarted the teacher!

To completely focus on his game, Howard moved to Las Vegas with his family. From there on there was no looking back. He maintained consistency in his play routine and played a variety of cash games and then WPT’s. He played a variety of games including No-Limit Deuce to Seven Draw, Limit Omaha Hi/Lo and won Hall of Fame poker titles or the gold bracelets at WSOP.

Howard won his first WPT Championship in 2003, Howard won his second WPT Championship title in the $5,000 Limit Hold ’em event on The Poker Million cruise. Just one month later, Howard won the first of his three Bellagio titles in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold ’em event at the 2003 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic. His second Bellagio win was in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold ’em event in April 2004. His third Bellagio title came just 13 days later in the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event.

Further soldering his nickname of “The Professor”, Howard runs a sort of an academy for his passion known as Poker Fantasy Camp where people can play with and learn from the best in the game. While not at the game, Howard enjoys family life in Las Vegas with his wife and son and enjoys movies and golf.

In summation, Howard Lederers philosophy relating Zen and the Art of Archery to Poker is worthy of mention. My interpretation of the same is as follows:

Preserve the beginners’ passion and keep an open mind.

Be a student and humbly accept that there is someone better at the game from whom loads can be learnt.

There is no final destination in the journey of perfection.

It takes dedication and commitment to evolve intuition in the game. Let the effort of involved in the game become effortless.

Well this Professor certainly practices what he preaches!

Do Wives Who Initiate The Divorce Eventually Regret It?

Divorce is one of those major life decisions that can be heart wrenching. For most people, this is an extremely difficult call to have to make. And I think that if most people are being honest, they will admit that they are not always sure that they are making the right decision when they decide to go ahead and end their marriage. Quite frankly, people often wonder if they are going to one day regret this. But many feel pressured to go ahead and make the decision any way so that every one can get on with their lives.

I sometimes hear from folks who are just approaching this crossroad for themselves. And who are wondering if one day regretting their decision is a possibility. So you might hear from a wife who has a concern like this: “I believe that I have made the very difficult decision to leave my husband and pursue a divorce. My husband is a good man. He would make a good father one day. But, the spark just isn’t there. And I don’t want to make the mistake of starting a family with someone who doesn’t create that chemistry with me. He used to. But he doesn’t anymore. I have been patient waiting for it to come back. But at this point, I think that I am just wasting part of both of our lives. I know that my husband loves me. And I love him. But I am not in love with him. He is going to be devastated about this, but I really am leaning toward this decision of divorce. I have talked to my best friend about this and she is very worried for me. She says that she knows a lot of women who have been divorced who deeply regret it. She says my husband is a keeper and I’m silly if I don’t see it. She says another woman will scoop my husband right up and then I will see how wrong my decision is truly going to be. Is she right? Do women regret their divorces?”

Well, I think that anyone can regret a divorce. But I think that women might be slightly more likely to regret it, especially if they were the ones who initiated it. And there are many reasons for this. First, women sometimes take a heavy financial hit after a divorce – and sometimes it takes quite a while to recover from this. Also, I’ve had some women tell me that they regret getting a divorce because they now realize that their standards were too high. Now that they are in the dating world, they are finding that most every person they are meeting has faults. And many of them find that it is difficult to date later in life – when many of the men that they might otherwise be interested in are dating younger women who have never been married.

Some have told me that they regret that they didn’t at least try to aggressively save their marriage before they got a divorce. Some concede that they may have ultimately divorced anyway. But they worry that they acted too impulsively or abruptly, especially since they have always been clear on the fact that there was really nothing wrong with their husband. He treated them well. He was a high quality person. Yes, perhaps something was missing, but many wish they had tried to get it back more enthusiastically before just letting a perfectly good husband go.

I am not saying that all women who seek a divorce regret it. Some do not. Some will tell you that it was a necessary decision. Some were in destructive or abusive relationships where they knew that they couldn’t thrive until they got out. These are the women who will tell you that they should have divorced sooner.

Of course, this wife’s situation didn’t even approach this. Even she conceded that she had a good man. Yes, she was impatient. And restless. And unhappy. But I might suggest at least trying a little harder to see if you can reignite the spark (which she admits was there previously.) I agree that children should be put off until it’s obvious that the marriage is stable and fulfilling for both people. Because that might make you feel trapped and who needs that right now?

But, I do see the advantage of thinking this through very carefully and perhaps seeing if you can bring back a little chemistry before you take any drastic action. Because if chemistry is the only problem, it can be fixed. And once you tell your husband that you want a divorce, this is something that you can ever take back. It will likely hurt him deeply and it might damage your marriage irrevocably. So, if you are going to mention a divorce, it should be something about which you are sure. And if you are researching whether or not women regret divorce, it doesn’t sound as if you are sure.
