The Affects of Stress on Your Wellness

Our body reacts to stress with a fight or flight response. Adrenaline is released which elicits a number of body responses to prepare the body for a fight or to run away from the situation. Blood is diverted from the digestive tract to the limbs, blood pressure raises, your heart beats faster to pump more blood, your muscles tighten in preparation, and your brain becomes more alert. These responses came in useful when you needed to flee a saber tooth tiger but today our stress response has become dysfunctional.

Constant stress keeps us in that fight or flight response chronically which burns out the body. Our muscles stay in a contracted state, leading to chronic pain and the potential for injury. Our digestion sufferers due to blood being diverted away from that area. Stress creates an acidic environment leading to ulcers, inflammation, heart disease, hormonal problems, depression, and even cancer. Chronic stress is literally a poison to our bodies. It is the largest aging and disease factor, not to mention the number one cause of workman's compensation claims.

Reduction of stress in your life is not possible … things are always going to happen in life. Your reaction to stress is the key. Our minds have control over our bodies and how we perceive the world around us. Our minds can also create a lot of unnecessary stress. So for better or worse, our minds are the key to our stress and how we deal with it. There are many tools you can use to counteract the effects of stress or how stress affects you.

One of the easiest tools you can use is your breath. Most of us have forgotten how to breathe properly. If you ever watch a baby breathe, you will notice that they breathe with their whole body. Their bellies fill fully and it looks effortless. Pay attention to your breath. Put your hand on your belly and notice if the breath goes all the way down. Most of us breathe very shallow, only using the top part of our lungs. Try breathing all the way down to your belly, into your chest, and then blow it all the way out. Do this a few times and notice how your heart beat decrees and you feel calmer. Try this when you feel stress coming on and see how differently you react to the stress.

There are other stress-reduction techniques that when practiced on a daily basis will help you flow more easily through life. Writing in a daily journal, positive affirmations, motivational books and CD's, stay away from television, observe nature, Tai Chi, Yoga, and massage therapy are all very beneficial for your wellness. Find one or more that you can practice on a regular basis and you add years to your life.

The 5 Stages to Start Evidence-Based Leadership

The implementation of evidence-based leadership is iterative. It’s too profound a shift to happen in one go. And it will never happen if we wait to thoroughly research our current state, detail a change management plan, save enough budget to resource it all, and delay until the time is just right and the planets have lined up.

Starting at the top is the quickest and easiest way to get rolling on the journey of high performance, because employees follow what leaders do. It’s too risky for them to do otherwise. Even if leaders say over and over again ‘Start measuring what matters!’, nothing will change if they aren’t doing it themselves.

Even when it starts from the top, the implementation of evidence-based practice across the organisation will follow iterations. It’s not going to happen in one fell swoop. With each iteration, it gets easier and smoother. And changes stick better.

So don’t feel overwhelmed by the adoption of evidence-based leadership. Simply focus on the first iteration. Move through the stages, monitor how it works, and see how that informs your next iteration.

There are five stages in the first iteration of implementing evidence-based management across the organisation.

Stage 1: Decide to be evidence-based leaders.

It’s worth having this conversation with your leadership team. And this is a conversation for the whole leadership team, not just part of it.

It’s worth exploring the leadership habits of Direction, Evidence and Execution, and the organisational habits of Decision, Action and Learning. What do they mean to you? How do you see them practised? Where is there the opportunity to practise them more deliberately?

Stage 2: Create a measurable corporate strategy.

Goals are often immeasurable because of weasel words, an action-orientation, and multi-focused complexity. So goals should be reworded to make their true meaning much more apparent to everyone. This automatically makes them easier to measure. So choose quantitative measures from the evidence that most convinces you of each goal being achieved. And now you have a direction that’s easy to communicate, easy to understand, and easy to monitor. It’s easy to take seriously!

Stage 3: Cascade the strategy.

Emailing the strategic plan to everyone, or rolling out a series of presentations about it, isn’t going to get the level of buy-in that’s necessary to fully execute it. People need to be engaged in a discussion about the strategic plan, they need to ponder it, to ask questions, to challenge it, to explore how they contribute to it. Then they can make it their own. This needs communication that is: two-way, like a dialogue, unstructured to allow for exploration, and flexible so people can join in on their own terms.

Stage 4: Let the cascade flow naturally.

There’s a risk with adopting a new approach to cascading strategy and creating a performance culture. It’s to do too much too soon. Starting small with this stage is important to avoid overwhelming people, and burning them out. So start cascading your evidence-based strategy in small bites. One way is to allow teams to pilot-test the new approach to setting goals and measures. Then later they will have more confidence to implement it fully.

Stage 5: Reflect and learn for the next iteration.

Did you close your performance gaps? What was the return on the investment in doing that? What did you learn about the dynamics driving performance in your processes and systems? What did you learn from failed attempts to close the performance gaps? What did you learn about yourselves? What is the next most important thing to focus on, to close your performance gaps further? These are the questions to ask at this point. Then tweak your approach for another iteration.

Will you start?

Mastery of something as complex as leading an organisation to true high performance doesn’t happen quickly. It’s hard, it’s challenging, and it’s a long road. But we need you on that road.

DISCUSSION:

What have you seen work well to instil evidence-based leadership in an organisation?

Review Of Amistad: A Novel By David Pesci

This great book by David Pesci remains an essential read for the understanding of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

The story begins with Singbe, a Mende slave, waking up to the frozen touch of a child’s corpse. From the very first words in the book, the reader’s nightmare begins as Singbe’s ordeal and the story of slavery is narrated with such chilling clarity and skill.

The Amistad (which means friendship), a Spanish slave-ship, makes its way across the Atlantic destined for the coast of Cuba with its human cargo. The snatching of slaves from Africa, though outlawed by the British and the Americans in 1809, continued for many years since the Spanish and Portuguese governments were not bound by these laws.

Ferrying Singbe and his group must have been a routine voyage for Captain Ramon Ferrer and his men. After all he and his crew had been running slaves for more than twenty years. But against wretched odds, Singbe and his men took over the control of the Amistad. The cook and captain were killed in the skirmish. But the slaves had no intention slaughtering the entire crew in retribution. All they wanted was to go home.

Since they knew nothing about seamanship they had to rely on one of the sailors, Montez, to steer the ship back to Africa. But through guile, Montez manoeuvres the wheels the other way and the ship ended up along the coast of America, setting off a political tempest of Shakespearean proportions.

The book therefore is mainly about the tribulations of the captured slaves as the American justice system decided on their fate. Interestingly it is only the Africans who had to face the courts to establish their innocence, and not their Spanish captors. They have to secure their own counsel while the US Secretary of State instructs the Federal District Attorney of New York to extend the Spaniards, Ruiz and Montez, ‘every courtesy and measure of legal assistance’.

Thus even though, to America’s credit, the battle was to be fought in the courts, the Africans were ‘going against entrenched sentiment regarding the black race and a system which has legally condoned slavery for more than two hundred years.’

The legal arguments on both sides were fierce, intricate and beguiling. Were the Africans property of the Spanish merchants Ruiz and Montez? If this was the case they would have to be returned to the control of the Spanish authorities and for trial under the Spanish courts. Or were they free men stolen from the coast of Africa? If this was the case then the American government, according to its own laws, would have to ensure their safe return back to Africa.

Did they commit murder when they wrested control of the ship, or were their actions to be considered self-defence and a justifiable attempt to free themselves from illegal bondage? Judge Judson found in the favour of the Africans to the detriment of his aspirations to be a Supreme Court justice. The case was appealed by the American government and taken to the Supreme Court where the findings of Judge Judson were upheld.

The author introduces us to some of the historic figures of the time. The president of the United States Van Buuren takes a personal interest in the case. The court documents show how he tried to use his office to manipulate the case, and co-operated with the Spanish authorities while showing scant regard for due process.

He seemed to be a man who valued the results of the next election above principle. He didn’t realise the significance of the plight of the Africans to his presidency. Like the mariner in the Coleridge’s The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, he could see but he didn’t understand what he saw. The Amistad Africans were the albatross to his leadership that he gratuitously shot.

There are the Tappan brothers, Lewis and Arthur, who risked life and limb fighting not only for the cause of the Africans but were also vociferous abolitionists. Judge Judson had an outstanding legal mind with aspirations for higher office. He nevertheless upholds the law and frees Singbe and his men despite warnings that such a decision could imperil his career.

Then there was also John Quincy Adams, a former United States President, described by the author ‘as a man of high intelligence’ with a ‘reputation as a gripping orator’. John Adams lends his formidable intellect and eloquence to the Amistad Africans’ cause, and secures freedom and passage for all of them back to Africa. Far from being a trial of Singbe and his men, it was the American nation that was on the dock.

Singbe was not the only hero to emerge from this voyage of darkness. His legal team had to overcome impossible odds. They were assisted by the American constitution which was an almost impassable moat against injustice.

There is no delicacy in the manner in which the author tells his story, and the coarseness of slavery is skilfully depicted in the book with words like manacle, chains, musket, thump, lifeless, hunt, blood, knife, lash, cargo, contraband, tribesmen, light-skinned, black-skinned, and of course death.. He wrote it so that the readers need no explanation from the author.

Amistad is a wonderfully told and well researched book. The movie by Steven Spielberg with Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, and Djimon Hounsou does justice to this story of a slave who shamed some of the most powerful players in the slave trade.

This grotesque and heroic saga of slavery is likely to linger in the reader’s mind though, long after reading the book.

Connotative Approach With Location Photography

Apparel makers have long known that their type of envelopes can carry on a totally exclusive fashion sense and an expectation of quality simply by associating the line with some well-known places and scenes. A Japanese firm, for example, offering its newest handbag, sometimes known as Le Bag, may very well make the item from materials from Japan, by Japanese workers, in Japanese factories, and yet, get to the difficulty of hiring French models in Paris To carry Le Bag open under the several well-known French sculpture in downtown Paris. This really is associating all that Paris signs to the client with something which has little to do with the place. The manufacturer is creating a connotative connection for the handbag using location photography.

Making such an relationship for items is a very well used process through the advertising and marketing business. The product might be something inside a can, corn perhaps. The advertiser will tell you in the advertisement just how fresh the corn is when harvested, how careful it is cleaned and handled, how broad the shipping, how the containers are created to preserve optimum quality, but these are all words. Have a truck or van filled with freshly harvested corn driving up to an outdoor market near to fields of swaying corn, golden shimmerings beneath a robust summer sun, several birds happily gamboling overhead, and all that's fresh and wholesome in that scene quickly connects to your Can of corn. Location photography can say much more about your products than the many words your very best copy writers can just imagine.

Location photography must always be viewed as the best venue when creating images that will speak for your products to the whole world. Even though you think your product has actually nothing to be received by associating a place with it, you might discover that something about your product can be said of a location that you would not have normally considered to link with the product or service. For instance, a manufacturer of durable dishes wanted to sell his potential clients on the durability of the dishes, but failed to think hammering them would make the most effective impact. Speaking to an adherent of location photography, he ended up being convinced that his dishes would best be displayed on top of a stony mountain. Viewers of the ad agreed, the solidness of the mountain stone for some reason imbued the dishes and cave them confidence the dishes would certainly last as long as the mountain itself, as if the dies had been created right from the mountain itself.

Certainly, location photography is essential in the event the product you're promoting relates to a location. Polish Polka records will appear authentic in a cover with a few scene from Poland, and an image of the Vatican would definitely inspire someone buying Catholic hymns from the Vatican. Obviously, going to these places can be pricey, but no one said they have to be genuine places.

A set that seems like a field of corn, a mountain which may not be wholly stone, an American field where youngsters are wearing Polish traditional garb, and even a model Vatican can all be sufficient to give the effect the photograph was shot on location. After all, it's the meaning of the location you're trying to link, not the location itself. Consider location the next time you conceive your product's presentation in photography as well as video. Let the location express what you can not express in words.

What Do the Best Formal Dining Room Sets Have in Common?

Whether you are newlyweds, or a family who has just moved into a new house, or someone whose house needs updating, there is nothing more fulfilling and satisfying that being able to decorate or vamp up your own place. They say that there is no place like home, and of course, home can only truly feel like one if it makes you feel secure, comfortable, and at peace.

Obviously, this implies that your interiors have to make you feel like you belong. No matter how ostentatious your house designs are, if they don’t feel like YOU, you can never be completely happy and at home. Your choice of interiors and furniture can definitely go a long way when it comes to determining the level of comfort and happiness you’ll feel in your very own home. Furniture, in particular, can really set the mood or the atmosphere in a room. Your choice of style, color, and material can either do damage to or light up the entire room.

Let’s talk about dining room furniture. The dining room is one of the most important parts of the house. This is the place where people dine together and convene as a family or a group of friends, and strengthen relationships and bonding through meals or casual get-togethers. Therefore, your choice of dining room furniture is very important.

Formal dining room sets, in particular, are great for entertaining guests for smarter, dress-up type occasions. Whether it’s a graduation party, or an intimate gathering that makes use of formal utensils and table settings, choosing the right formal dining room sets does a lot to set the right mood within the group. This is also where place settings take their cues from. In fact, you could say that they form the foundation of a great-looking dining room setting. If all is in place with your tables and chairs, then your guests should have no problem feeling comfortable when they come over.

There are different kinds of dining room furniture, which is basically a dining room table, complete with the chairs and the entire set-up. For more formal occasions, a dining room table is best to purchase, which can be installed right in your main dining area. Choose a brand that is made of wood for durability and longevity. For a more casual take on dining and mealtime moments, kitchen tables are best. These come in various shapes and sizes, and can be customized according the number of people you would like to seat. For smaller groups, you can consider going for pub tables.

Criteria for Buying

Now, let’s talk about the general criteria to consider when it comes to buying specifically formal dining room sets.

The first factor is design. Now while a lot of people are antsy or fussy about designs, keep in mind that it is not always best to choose designs that are ostentatious and eye-catching. Remember that your dining tables have to fit right into the space you are placing them into, and not stick out like a sore thumb. Less is more, so keep it simple. The best way to choose the right design for your home should be based on the type of mood you want to set, relative to the mood the rest of your house already sets.

Color coordination works sometimes, but if you want your dining table to stand out with a personality of its own, you don’t have to choose one that matches the color of your carpet exactly – just as long as it’s not too gaudy. The main focus of the dining area is the eating of the meals. Don’t let your dining room table distract your guests, family, friends, and loved ones from a wonderful meal at home.

However, while your table doesn’t necessarily have to match the colors of your walls or other items in the house, they must certainly match the chairs, servers, and cabinets. These are the more predominant areas of your dining area, and you have to make sure that even though these items are not of the same color, they must at least be a few shades close to the hue you have chosen for your dining table. Color coordination still plays a very important role in mealtimes, as the overall goal is to encourage people to do what they are supposed to do in the dining area – to eat a good meal.

A specific type of color coordination that would apply directly to woodwork is stain matching. This is simply making sure that your dining room table’s woodwork matches your existing woodwork. If you are confused about which exact color you want to get to make sure that you don’t get a shade that throws you off the original woodwork you have in your dining area, look at each stain design carefully – you should actually be able to figure out the different colors that comprise it, and you will most likely come up with brown, red, and orange, which are the most common colors. Consult your local carpenter or painter if you are still unsure.

Customization

Finally, the last criterion is customization. Now, of all these tips, this is probably one of the best to keep in mind. You see, no matter how amazing your formal dining room set may be, if it doesn’t look good in your house, it will never fit in with the rest of your furniture. Make sure you canvass different stores and brands carefully, letting your eyes do all the observing. It would be good to take raw pictures of your dining room at home without the furniture, taking close-up shots of panels, cabinets, and floors as much as possible so that you can compare products with those that you already have at home. Never be afraid to ask for help if you are unsure of which product to buy or which specs to look for. It is better to consult someone who knows what he’s doing than end up buying the wrong dining room furniture and having to return it again, therefore wasting time, energy, and resources. Learn how to take measurements to make sure that your dining room set will totally fit into your dining area.

Customization requires you to know the sizes you want for your dining area (as you can probably have it as big or as intimate as you like, depending on what you need). Never go into a furniture store without measurements, as this will be a waste of time for both yours and the store’s part. Also, do not be tempted to compromise fit for design. Understandably, some designs will appeal more to you than others, but if it doesn’t contribute to the overall feeling of belonging and comfort in the home, chances are, buying it would be a grave mistake to make. Therefore, before you make that trip to the shop, get that measuring tape out and take down notes -you’ll find that it will save you from a lot of doubting or extra trips home later, as you will be confident about the sizes you need for your home.

As each house is different, this should just be a general list that you should go through – keep your own unique standards in mind and add those along to the list, as you will have varying needs that may not be covered by those general criteria. For first-time house decorators, this task can be, while exciting, also very daunting and challenging, as the thrill usually wears off when you are halfway into the project and you start questioning whether you chose the right woodwork or the right tables and chairs to go with your dining area.

Apart from all these tips, a good idea would be to come up with a vision of your own prior to canvassing or looking around for sample tables and chairs. You should know what you would like to see in your dining room first. This eliminates a lot of prospects, and you will be able to narrow down your selection, based on your house’s specifications, your own personal needs, and your budget.

Don’t worry if you don’t find the right dining tables and chairs right away; for some people, it takes a longer time to find the perfect set. Don’t be discouraged or resort to rash decision-making and impulse buying just to appease your state of frustration -you will only end up regretting this in the end when you actually see something that you like. Instead, focus on the end goal and getting everything right and sorted before making your choice.

Uses Of Dining Room Hangers

Hangers can come in various types, sizes, and shapes. There are those for clothes. There are also those for towels, and so on. These hangers help keep household items organized. In addition to that, it also keeps items in place and often out of children’s reach. The dining room is another area of the house where you can make use of hangers. These can actually come in handy. In the dining room, you do not just store plates, spoon and fork, and glasses you also store other items like ladles, bottles of wine, goblets and more. These items when not placed in the proper area can be broken, lost or damaged. These are the very reasons why dining room hangers can be essential.

What are the uses of dining room hangers?

You can use these to hold wine bottles. There is a specific type of hanger that is designed solely for holding wine bottles. These hangers keep the bottles in place and safe from breakage. Other than that, you can also use these hangers to serve the wine.

Wine glasses and goblets can also benefit from these dining room hangers. Like the hangers for wine bottles, there are also specific hangers for wine glasses and goblets. Oftentimes, these hangers are installed atop a countertop so when the glasses are hanged it is upside down. This position keeps the dust from collecting inside the wine glass and goblet. This also keeps it safe and out of children’s reach.

There is also a separate type of hanger for kitchen utensils. These hangers keep the utensils organized and within reach. Typically, this hanger is installed near the stove where you can easily reach it when you need it.

Plate hangers also keep the plates organized and accessible. These plate hangers vary in sizes and can be made from different materials. In addition to that, these are also used to display decorative plates in the dining room as decorations.

More Than One Way to Remove Wrinkles

Can you really remove wrinkles, without surgery, or is it all a bunch of advertising hype? Fixing wrinkles is possible, as long as you take the right approach. Over the years, dermatologists have had different opinions on how it can be done. Let's take a look at the theories.

Paralyzing the Facial Muscles

One of the oldest theories is that habitual facial expressions cause wrinkle formation. That's why you hear terms like "laugh lines" and that's why Botox injections became popular. Before Botox and collagen injections, the most popular method to remove wrinkles was a "face-lift" to "stretch" out the skin, increasing firmness, which reduced the depth of a wrinkle and caused fine lines to disappear.

Still today, after all of these years, the idea of paralysis facial muscles is still popular. Many of the new creams on the market, commonly advertised as "safe Botox alternatives", claim that a compound called "Argireline" is effective for fixing wrinkles. What does argireline do? It numbs the tiny facial muscles.

Wearing Sunscreen

Over the last two decades, the popular theory has been that 90% of all the signs of aging are caused by sun-damage. So, most of the "supposedly" cures for fixing wrinkles contain sun-screening compounds. In some products, the sunscreens are the only active ingredients.

Preventing wrinkle formation by avoiding overexposure to the sun is one thing. But, how can a sun-screening compound remove wrinkles? It is simply illogical.

Fighting Free Radical Damage

In a recent report, the American Association of Dermatologists proposed a new theory. They have seen that the number of free radicals in the skin of an older person is higher than it is in that of a younger person. They have also seen that antioxidant levels are lower or absent entirely.

Antioxidants normally keep free radicals in check. When they are missing, free radicals damage the cellular membranes, the collagen fibers and the DNA strands. The Dermatology report concluded that this cellular damage is the cause of all of the signs of aging.

If that is so, how can fixing wrinkles be possible without surgical reparations? Well, first you have to increase the antioxidant capacity of the skin's cells. That will help remove wrinkles, because not only do some antioxidants, like coenzyme Q10, prevent damage, they also repair damage that has already been done. Once you have covered, you move to step two.

Growing Some New Skin

It is not impossible to encourage your body to produce new skin-cells. The latest studies have shown that protein peptides increase the production of new skin-cells and fiber. They also increase firmness, which, as you remember, is why a face-lift is effective for fixing wrinkles.

There is a new line of products that includes all of the antioxidants that it takes to fight free radicals, as well as active protein peptides that help remove wrinkles and increase firmness. The best thing is … the ingredients are all natural, literally safe enough to eat. What more could you ask for?

TV Wall Brackets Are Better Than TV Stands

Flat panel TVs are preferred by a majority of people due to their sleek design and high-resolution images. They are thin and lightweight, making it a potential candidate for the wall. Being light and easy to carry around, you may think it more convenient to simply put it on a stand. Although that aspect is fairly correct, you should also consider the risk of people accidentally bumping it or spilling something on it. If you have a busy house with children running around and adults moving freely around the room, you might want to consider safety and security over ease and convenience. TV brackets can keep your flat panel TV safe and secure. In addition, there are models and styles that can help position the TV screen for your viewing pleasure. Your apprehensions on mobility can be put to rest, knowing that there are different models and types of TV brackets that can tilt and swivel to provide the correct viewing angles for your enjoyment.

With wall mounting, you can keep the TV safe from children and prevent accidents. Thieves will have a hard time getting the TV from its location. A TV on a stand or table is delayed to getting damaged. You will experience more room space once you mount the TV on the wall. The aesthetic look of the TV will be more obvious once you see the screen on the wall. There is a frame like appearance that provides a modernistic look to the room. The possibility of having liquid or other items falling on the TV becomes remote. There are different models and types for each portion of the wall. There are even ceiling TV brackets if you prefer using the ceiling rather than the wall. One major consideration is the weight and size of the television. There are models specifically designed to handle different TV brands and models of varying weights and sizes. Their main function is to provide maximum viewing pleasure to the audience, and they are manufactured and designed for various TV brands and models. You have to choose the right type that goes together with your TV model. The TV manual will show the correct weight and size of the television. In some cases, it will indicate the appropriate TV wall bracket that should be used with that specific TV. You can validate the information by contacting the manufacturer. TV brackets and the back of the television sets are constructed to meet VESA standards. This standardization is to ensure there are no mismatches when fitting the television onto the TV wall bracket. The distances of the holes in the mounting bracket and the plate on the back of the TV should conform to VESA specifications. Choose a brand that is known for its integrity and reliability. A high-quality TV bracket will give you the reassurance and peace of mind that your TV is firmly secured on the bracket. Cheaper TV brackets may be able to hold your TV initially but may not be able to continuously hold it in place for a long period of time.

TV brackets continuously undergo improvements and innovations. There are tilt and swivel models that can adjust the television screen to the right position. In addition, some TV brackets have provisions to keep the cables and wiring neat and orderly. Some can even accommodate other accessories, such as a DVD player and games console. Aside from its functionality, there are TV brackets designed to have a modernistic and contemporary look. They can also come in different colors to match the wall or ceiling. TV brackets have surpassed the TV stands in functionality and design. Get a TV wall bracket and enjoy watching your favorite TV program in a cinematic atmosphere.

Filing Alphabetically – Advantages and Disadvantages

In an organized filing system folders are arranged in some kind of order. Some commonly used systems include: alphabetical, straight numeric, terminal digit numeric, or by a category. Sub categories can also be added to the above methods. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of the various systems upfront will allow for an informed decision based on your particular needs.

This article looks at alphabetical filing. Numeric systems are evaluated in other articles.

Before putting the files into alphabetical order you have to decide what will be the designator of the file. This will allow you to get an idea of the total quantity of files in the system. Using a name is the most commonly used factor. Most systems put last name first, then the first name. For example: Beth Smith would be filed before Pam Smith.

ADVANTAGES:

Alphabetical filing has several advantages.

a) Most people are familiar with this type of filing because libraries (at least partially) and home filing systems are usually alphabetical.

b) The staff should be able to learn and become comfortable with the system in a timely manner.

c) The total amount of shelving available for the system can be divided into alphabetical order before you start to add records (*the chart below shows how to estimate space for alpha sorted files).

*A=3.2%

B=9.7%

C=8.0%

D=4.9%

E=2.2%

F=3.8%

G=4.9%

H=7.8%

I=0.4%

J=2.6%

K=3.6%

L=4.5%

M=9.3%

N=1/7%

O=1.3%

P=4.5%

Q=0.2%

R=4.8%

S=10.2%

T=3.4%

U=0.4%

V=1.0%

W=6.8%

X=0.1%

Y=0.5%

Z=0.2%

d) Another advantage is the need to shift the records after purging records is reduced because what records are removed is usually random. The new records added to the system will also be random and fall across the entire filing system.

e) A cross-reference may be avoided if the situation is such that the name on the record is easily available.

DISADVANTAGES:

Alpha filing also has some disadvantages.

a) This system does not work well with very large filing systems. With a large amount of files the chance of duplicate names is great which can lead to confusion and increase retrieval time.

b) Color coding is more difficult since you need to have 26 colors or combination of colors to designate all the letters of the alphabet. Spotting mis-files can also be harder.

c) Trying to remember where a letter falls in the alphabet adds to the time of filing and retrieving the records. Also, dealing with some of the rules of alpha filing is confusing. For example, does Mc come before or after Mac? Every time I go to the library I stand at the stacks trying to remember these rules (and I have to keep going through the alphabet to find a particular letter on the shelves).

d) If confidentiality is an issue having a person’s name on the file may be a privacy violation. In addition, the chances are increased that an unauthorized person can find a particular file.

In conclusion, making the decision on what system to use depends on your needs and how you rank the advantages and disadvantages listed above.

Review of McDowell – A Book by Author William H Coles

William H. Coles’ McDowell doses readers with literate medicine for the mind and soul, with a distinctive and engrossing work of dramatic fiction that craftily embeds a story of self-discovery within the world of the modern medical profession. It delves into the life and psyche of surgeon Hiram McDowell, a medical professional at the pinnacle of his success who dwells at the lowest points of morality.

From the story’s outset, readers will find they are immediately engrossed in the life of protagonist Dr. Hiram McDowell. He lives a dual existence in his world which teems, with wealth, opportunity and privilege. To the outside world he wears the facade of an ambitious humanitarian and expert in his field, but to those who know him more intimately he is morally flawed with only his own interests and needs at heart.

Altogether, McDowell severely lacks in common human decency; he is crude to his family, ignores and openly cheats on his wife, looks only to serve his goals within his profession, revels in deceptiveness, steps on the toes of colleagues and misappropriated charitable funds. Moreover, the focus of the story is not just mainly on McDowell; it also brings into focus his family dynamic and the effects that his behavior therefore has on his family, particularly his two closest children.

Ultimately, he makes enemies out of those that once trusted him and perpetuates conflicts of self- esteem within those that attempt to love him. An almost seemingly hopeless cause, it piques the curiosity to see where things go for him. Eventually McDowell’s moral deficiencies become his complete downfall and he is consequently forced to live a life of poverty and solitude with his wealth, fame and power far removed from his life. Forced to live as an itinerant fugitive, and meanwhile, surviving by his wits, he gradually learns, to humble himself and become a more humane human for his survival among everyday folk.

Wholly, enjoyable McDowell was a richly realized and realistically detailed read that was character driven and moved at a balanced pace. Hiram McDowell turned out to be a strongly posed, despisable and simultaneously engrossing character whose ethical flaws catalyzed his journey to his self discovery. Overall, author William H. Coles writes with a literate aplomb that is both evocative and entertaining especially when it comes to detailing aspects of the medical profession and facets of human nature. My only contention about this read is the presence of some minor editing issues. But, issues aside, this was a worthy read and I do recommend it.

Golf – The Power of Negative Thinking

Much of the game of golf is played in the mind and I am going to show you how powerful negative thoughts can be and why you should avoid them at all costs. I'll even give you an exercise that you may dare to try!

The first example I would like to give is of my own problem on my home course. The 18th at my home club is the number 1 stroke hole (that is to say it is the most difficult on the course). It also happens to be the toughest par 4 in New Zealand with an average score of 6.8. The hole is a right angle dog leg right with tree lined out of bounds on the right, a lake on the left and a very narrow entrance to the corner. The corner being where the dog leg begins. Believe me it is a tough hole. If you do get it down to the corner there is about a 220 meter second to an uphill green. The green is at least 30 feet above you as face your second shot. And just to add a bit of insult to injury the wind is predominately against you. To be honest a bogey is a very good score.

Anyway the point is I stand on the tee and KNOW that I am not going to score on the hole. Invariably that is exactly what happens. But …… the other day I played with a fellow who has resigned himself to the fact that he can not par the hole. His tactic is now to play short, go over the trees and cut the corner with his second and then play the third on to the green. This means his club selection is anything from a 3 wood to a 5 iron off the tee (depending on the wind) followed by a 6 or 7 iron over the trees and then anything from an 8 iron to a pitching wedge on to the green. Hopefully he can two putt and walk away with a very respectable bogey. I tried this a couple of times and I am now far more positive about the hole.

Try this next time you are out on the course. Take a look at the hole you are playing and make a mental note of where you DO NOT want to be. Say to yourself "I definitely do not want to go right" (or left as the case may be). Take a swing and see what happens. I can almost guarantee where you said you did not want to go is where you land up!

So what use is this to you as a golfer? Well quite simply you need to eliminate negative thoughts, in particular the last thought before you hit the ball. Do not think "I do not want to go left", replace this with "keep the ball right".

You may find this hard at first but if you keep consciously practicing it it will become a sub-conscious habit.

I've also observed people in match play situations say seemingly innocent things for their opponent to "accidentally" overhear. Things like you do not want to be short, long, left, right, that side of the fairway etc. Invariably what happens is that which exactly where the player goes as his subconscious has now been programmed to get him there.

So to conclude be aware of your thoughts and make certain they are positive.

Who was it that said something like "if you think you can and if you think you can not you are right"? Truer words have never been spoken.

How Travel Is Reshaping the Fashion Industry

The answer to the question ‘how travel is reshaping the fashion industry’ is simple!

When an Asian tourist of a high socioeconomic status goes to the US and shops fashion accessories; they bring the international market with them. When they catch the attention of the top fashion brands, they cater their needs by those brands. These same brands, having seen the effect of the increase in tourism, have started creating unique marketing campaigns that provide their international buyers. They would provide people with special deals, personal shoppers or even a language translator to help the market grow in their country. So in this article, we are going to talk about this topic in detail!

Travel Industry and Social Media is Changing the Fashion Industry:

Nowadays, being able to reach your target audience through the internet is more important than anything else!

If a brand fails to do that, see a major decline in sales. It could be through social media and digital marketing or e-commerce, but the new revolution of the fashion industry is how internet-famous your brand is. Models, makeup artists, producers, and stylists are hired more for their influence in the social media than their talents. The more followers on Instagram or Twitter, the more your brand would sell. That is the new formula that is reshaping the fashion industry.

Brands that still stick to the traditional marketing style have been losing their relevance in the industry and their sales. Three out of four buyers are inclined to buy a brand’s products after seeing it or hearing about it, online. Social media is transforming the fashion industry because now people want to experience firsthand what they buy through Snapchats or Tweets online. If a consumer does not find their desired brand online, they move on to the next big brand that is online and serve their wishes.

Today, a person’s social status is determined by their extravagant travels and experiences rather than the Jimmy Choos they wear or the bag they carry. It is all about opulent adventures in foreign countries and not how much you spend on your watches or clothes. There has been a break in the fashion industry that has brought about a shift in the way they do things now. Designers and brands worldwide are trying to modify themselves to be able to fit in the new demographic trends. That is how travel is changing the fashion industry. The Chinese tourists did approximately a record $229 billion shopping of expensive items in the year 2015. But, with the new wave of preference of destinations over lavish goods, brands have started adapting the same trend. They are now trying to reach different regions of the world by marketing their campaigns in a way they get the ‘experience’ people desire. These are just some of the ways high-end travel is reshaping the fashion industry!

Seven Leopard Gecko Breeding Secrets

1. General

The breeding season extends from late February/early March until September. In nature it is triggered by rising temperatures after hibernation geckos.

That is why some breeders recommend practicing a period of hibernation of 1 to 2 months (November-December), during which the duration of lighting, temperature and food are gradually reduced. Personally I do not practice hibernation and prefers to use this time to rest well fed and give them a maximum of energy and nutrient reserves (including their tail) for future breeding season. They ensure good health, is certainly a factor for success in the reproduction of leopard geckos.

2. Sexing leopard gecko It is relatively simple sexing leopard gecko adult.

Here are three hallmarks of male to distinguish it from the female:

* The preanal pores (small colored dots) that form a V just before the bulges hémipéniens. * The two bulges hémipéniens (balls covering hemipenis) just before the cloaca (beginning of tail). * The male is usually wider at the base of the neck than the female.

The female exhibits no preanal pores, or bulges hémipéniens.

The first 2 comments are reliable and sufficient to determine the sex of a leopard gecko. For the third criterion, in some cases, the difference at the base of the neck is not hollowing between male and female. Finally it should be noted that incubation plays an essential role in determining the sex of the leopard gecko.

3. Age of breeding

For successful reproduction it is important that breeders are healthy and sexually mature. For if the male can be ready to play without problem from 10 months, this is not the case of the female. A female too young might monopolize the calcium for egg formation at the expense of its frame, which could halt its growth, making it more fragile and even reduce its life expectancy.

It is therefore strongly advised to wait until a female has completed its growth and is sufficiently robust (15-18 months) to bring together a breeding male.

4. Coupling

On the evening, minutes before extinguishing the lights in the terrarium, a male runner before showing signs of his intentions.

It will then be wagging his tail in the sweeping right to left at an astonishing speed. I am always amused to attend these parades because according to your substrate, then the noise is quite striking and the substrate spins a little in all directions.

Since the male gets the message and began to chase the female. It will then attempt to repeatedly bite the female on the neck to immobilize. This made successful, the female and male inflorescence seized his chance. Mating usually lasts one to two minutes.

Once completed, the two partners make a careful toilet of their genitalia. Mating leopard gecko is relatively fleeting and it is not necessarily obvious to observe. But with the usual observation, and the sound of this parade so special “helicopter tail” of the male, it becomes easier to detect and attend this coupling.

5. Clutch

After mating, the gestation. The eggs will then be formed in the oviduct of the female that we calls’ pregnant. Approximately 2-4 weeks later, it lay. It consists of 2 eggs large enough relative to the size of the female. Several observations lead to the provision:

* In As you can see the eggs, two white masses, through the abdomen. Although gradually ceasing to feed, the female then takes the volume but its tail, constituting its energy reserve, thinning somewhat. * It will seek to benefit from exposure to UV rays before lights out.

The eggs will be deposited overnight in a humid chamber consisting of moist vermiculite. The female takes care to cover before leaving the wet box. After graduating she has suddenly lost weight and continue to scratch around the box as if trying to cover a few more eggs. In the evening it will have a big appetite and we should then not hesitate to eat it at will to immediately resume strengths and reserves in its tail, the interval between each spawning was relatively short (2-4 weeks). Note that the male will not hesitate to cover the female on the night of spawning.

6. Incubation

Once the female has laid her eggs in the humid chamber, it is necessary to let her out of herself before attempting to remove. This allows the female to cover them, it will also feel that their eggs are protected.

Once the female release, the vermiculite was removed with a soft brush to collect the eggs. To find them most easily in the humid chamber, it is convenient to use a translucent box.

Then the eggs are retrieved gently using a small spoon, for example, ensuring that it does not return and are transferred to the incubator by placing them in boxes lined with moist vermiculite. As stated just above, the rempérature incubation plays an essential role in sex determination in the leopard gecko.

This is what we call T.S.D. (Temperature Sex Determination).

Incubation temperatures: Temperature (° C) Sex Incubation 26 ° to 28 ° Female 55 to 65 days 29 ° to 31 ° Male or Female 45 to 55 days 32 ° to 33 ° Male 35 to 45 days

We must ensure that the temperature does not drop below 26 degrees and does not exceed 33 °, otherwise the life of the embryo will be greatly compromised. The incubation period is longer or shorter depending on the temperature (see above).

Tip: It is essential to regularly monitor the eggs placed in the incubator. If an egg takes on a dubious (mold growth, drooping of the shells…), it is best to remove it from the incubator after first “admire” when in doubt.

Mirer an egg is to be carried across by a light beam (preferably in black) to verify the presence or absence of embryo in the egg.

7. Hatching

Depending on the temperature of incubation, it is relatively easy to plan hatching eggs. Provided and record the dates of each egg.

Furthermore the appearance of an egg to hatch will change suddenly. It will take a whiter color and swelling more towards a more rounded. The outbreak is so close and with any luck it is possible to attend. It takes about two hours from the time the little gecko pierces the shell.

If there is a little longer in its shell, does not seek to remove, because it is possible he still uses his reserve “viteline.

The outbreak ended, the little leopard gecko, striped black and white/yellow (for the common phase) will be placed in a small terrarium (20 x 30 cm) lined with paper towel. It is advisable to place a juvenile in the terrarium to avoid stress mutual.

It was after 2 or 3 days (first molt) the gecko took his first meal. Do not try to propose live insects during these few days which could cause unnecessary stress. To start the diet, small crickets can be used.

Personally I use flavored crickets (can’O’cricket) for my juveniles nutritious and adapted to the size of juveniles, it allows me to distribute the food better now for all of them.

Then as small leopard gecko grow, it is preferable to opt for live crickets of appropriate size.

Sewer Repairs and Water Main Repair Services

Sewer repairs and water main repair are supposed to be the most important services that plumbers and technicians can offer. They in fact offer sewer replacement and upgrades to the residents in order reduce their hassle. It is a service that keeps homeowners miles away from the associated problems and conveys the wastage to the destination easily without any disruption.

Plumbers and technicians use different types of techniques to solve the problem of sewer malfunctioning. They often use trenchless technology for drain or sewer pipe repair. It is mainly applied through a clean-out with no cutting to the plumbing system. It is also known as a non-invasive way of sewer pipe repair. In this system, the liner is positioned within a translucent bladder and vacuum is created. Then the liner assembly is inverted through the clean-out. The process involves the use of a camera port that allows a lateral push camera to be inserted inside the translucent bladder, offering visual clear-cut verification of the liner placement. The same bladder is re-inverted and removed from the pipe to clear out the line.

Technicians use slab penetration technique also as an alternative to trenchless technology. It is a powerful technique of drain cleaning in which a hole is hammered into the slab in order to remove the dirt, sludge, hair and debris. The broken section of sewer pipe is eliminated and replaced with the new pipe at the same time. Plumbers inspect and evaluate the complete pipe line and if the old pipe is corroded and in ill shape, they replace the pipe line. Slab penetration is one of the most recognized techniques that help to clear out the dust and sludge. It is a complex process and can involve the removal of cabinets or flooring above the area in order to solve the problem.

In order carry out such precision-loaded tasks, you need to have an experienced and qualified plumber and technician. One who can understand the problem and recommend the best possible options to the problem. He must be able to carry out the sensitive and advanced plumbing processes easily, with complete knowledge of its advantages and disadvantages.

Only a qualified plumbing professional can perform the work well and in an efficient manner. Their fleet has all the required safety equipment to make sure a safe and clean underground excavation including, but not limited to: personnel barriers, reflective indicators, traffic cones, LED indicators, tools and machines, vehicle-based lighting, warning tapes, etc.
