A Quick Guide To Starter And Alternators In The Face Of Machine Problems

If you own a car, you have a fair idea of what starters and alternators are. Suppose your automobile is working fine one day but simply stops responding the next day, what would you make of it? The starter probably has developed a problem, but you think it could also be the alternator.

Even if your car is starting and does not have a starter problem, it can shut off if the alternator is not working and charging the batteries while the car runs. The longer you run battery-dependent appliances in the car when the alternator is down, the faster the car wills shut down.

The role of starters and alternators

These are two distinct components of a car engine. The engine goes from stationary to moving because of the starter. However, it is the alternator that provides the engine with power to keep it moving. Thus, starters and alternators together form an assembly that helps kick-start your automobile into motion. However, though their functions may seem similar, it is not as easy to figure out which one is causing problems, when it comes to an automobile not responding, as discussed above.

How to differentiate between starters and alternators

A bad starter or malfunctioning starters may not let the engine crank and start at all, while poorly performing alternators give them away when the engine is cranking, but devices using power, such as lamps or other electric-driven functions such as a music system or Power locks do not work. Another thing to remember is that alternators also charge batteries. Thus if your batteries are not working, it could be an indication of a poorly-performing alternator as well. How does the alternator charge the car battery? It does so by taking the energy of the running engine and converting it into electricity that is then used for recharging the battery as well as for supplying power to devices that need it.

In contrast, when an engine is cranked, the starter uses electricity from the battery to engage the gears and eventually start the engine to put it into motion.

For this reason, one way to differentiate between trouble caused by starters and alternators is to keep a close watch when you start your engine. If your engine starts with a jump-start (or someone pushing the vehicle to start), the engine is probably running fine. However, if the headlights are unusually dim or devices using electricity are not working, it could be an alternator issue.

Heavy duty starter and alternators

Both starters and alternators have a shelf life, like other parts of course. However, the thing to remember is that these are typically 'heavy duty' pieces of equipment. Typically, if you discover there is mechanical trouble in your car due to starters and alternators, and you are advised to change either of them, you should stress on high quality, heavy duty spares.

Keep in mind that starters and alternators, like other engine parts and spare parts are different for automobiles, depending on purpose and utility value. Even if the alternator works on a simple principle of harnessing electromagnetic energy, it needs to be heavy-duty. Ideally, you should source spares from a trusted agency, and one that caters to your brand of automobile. Not only does this ensure better performance, it also means your part is maintained well and lasts longer.

Incidence Meters for RC Airplanes

Incidence Meters for RC Airplanes

RC airplane hobbyists dedicate an immense amount of time to each beloved airplane. If the airplane takes off, flies around without any problem, then the job is pretty much finished for some. However, there are enthusiasts who demand their airplanes be the best they can be, and others who simply want to find out what that wobble, wiggle or waggle is. For those hobbyists, there are incidence meters for RC Airplanes. There are many brands available for use from the tried and true trusty Robart meter, the brand new and techie digital meters such as Angle-Pro 4-1 digital, and the AeroPerfect Digital Meter. So which is best is the question many hobbyists ask. After all getting the wrong one for the job is as bad as not having one at all. What follows is an overview of the top three types of incidence meters for RC airplanes.

Robart Analog Meter

Robart’s incidence meter is a standard in model measuring devices and designed long before the digital models came out. That means many hobbyists are working with outdated but very familiar equipment. This new Robart Incidence meter has a larger meter face, a bubble level, and an anti-parallax scale. The strongest advantage to the Robart brand is that it is familiar and it is very budget friendly. Tech can add to ease of use, and consistency in readouts but it also adds to price. Robarts meter is still one of the lower priced incidence meters on the market. It is well constructed and doesn’t need batteries or a plug-in, however it is easy to get wrong, it must be held absolutely level to be accurate and readings are not as simple as with digital incidence meters.

Angle-Pro 4-1 Digital Meter Plus Throw Meter

Digital products have some great advantages and these are particularly noticeable when it comes to incidence meters for RC airplanes. The Angle Pro is small and neatly packaged with a functional digital readout that certainly makes it attractive. Although it is a bit more expensive than the Robart model it is not the top of the line in price. The design is simple to handle and lightweight, since angle is everything in digital incidence meters, lightweight seems a good thing. The Angle Pro is accurate to.1 of a degree. However, there are a couple of glaring issues with the Angle Pro. The lightweight case which makes this digital incidence meter so easy to place also was so manufactured that it has to be held by hand in order to take measurements, using the mounting bar results in too much shift and inaccurate readings. The reason that mounting bars are important is that hands need to be free to push the buttons on these digital devices, but when tied up holding the Angle Pro, that’s not an option. Although the Angle Pro 4-1 Digital Incidence Meter looks good in theory, it is not as good in practice although the price is certainly attractive.

AeroPerfect Digital Meter

The Aeroperfect Digital meter is the top of the line digital meter. Although it is not as streamlined as the Angle Pro, it’s design allows for ease of use and reliability. The AeroPerfect meter is made up of two parts, a digital readout section connected via a cable to the measuring section. This digital incidence meter is accurate to.05 a degree. Attachment to the plane is secure with this model and the readout head gives digital accuracy without straining the eyes or neck or hands trying to hold up the meter while zeroing it. You will pay more for quality, but you will get more accurate readings and comparing AreoPerfect against Angle Pro, the chances are your meter will last you a lot longer. With Robart there is no contest, it is tried and true but not being digital leaves a lot of room for errors.

Before any purchase, a hobbyist usually checks the budget against the need for the gadget. Some just can’t be put off and others are in the “would like to have” category. When it comes to incidence meters for RC airplanes, eventually one will become a necessary item rather than a “nice to have” item. When that time comes, budget of course will be important but decide if you need superior accuracy, ease of use, or durability, and then make your purchasing decisions from there. Robart features durability, relative ease of use, and is budget friendly. AnglePro is lightweight but lacks durability and possibly accuracy it is budget friendly. AeroPerfect shines in ease of use, design, construction and accuracy, but you will have to pay for these features.

What Is Behavioural Economics and How Might It Affect You?

There is a ‘new term’ in town: ‘Behavioural economics’. Actually it’s really just a fancy term for concepts that have been in play for the best part of 30 years, but recent developments in neuroscience have added to the field. What is being discovered may affect everyone who has ever purchased a financial product (i.e. everyone reading this) and all organisations that have ever sold them.

‘What was I thinking?’

You probably think that you make rational financial decisions most of the time, right? That may well be the case, but many of us don’t. Anyone who has ever wondered ‘what was I thinking when I bought those shares?’ or similar, will know what I am talking about.

We like to think we make decisions objectively and after sufficient deliberation but studies from psychology and neuroscience consistently show that many of our decisions are driven by our in-built biases or ‘cognitive biases’. These are developed early in our lives and usually persist, so we often tend to respond intuitively or emotionally rather than rationally and deliberately.

This can lead to poor judgement in many walks of life and most of the time it need not have serious consequences – we are all humans and we make mistakes. However, when it can result in financial collapse like it did for many during the Global Financial Crisis it becomes necessary to get the decision right, and to look into the reasons why that may not be possible.

Behavioural Economics

This is where behavioural economics comes in. The interest in why even sophisticated people choose an inferior product – even when a more suitable product is available – has intrigued many economists, financial institutions, and behavioural psychologists alike.

Since the groundbreaking work of Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman in the 1980s the theories have been floating around; but with additional findings from neuroscience about how we think and behave, plus the influence of the Global Financial Crisis, interest has started rise.

More and more work has gone into answering two main questions:

1. Why do so many consumers make ‘sub-optimal’ decisions when selecting financial products?

2. Why do they choose poor products over products that are better suited to their needs?

Behavioural economics sets out to quantify financial decision-making and take a more ‘scientific’ approach to it. The tendency in the past was to just ‘assume’ that people make decisions armed with all the right information.

The GFC showed that this didn’t necessarily apply – and the fallout affected countless millions of people. So the regulators in the UK, Europe, the US and Australia have all become interested.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK says ‘Behavioural economics takes us beyond intuition and helps us be precise in detecting, understanding, and remedying problems that arise from consumer mistakes.’

How does it affect financial organisations?

Many financial institutions have come under the spotlight for their marketing strategies in recent years. Fingers point at attempts to exploit customer decision-making by appealing to their biases, knowingly leading them to less effective choices than alternatives or competing products.

Because of interest from financial market regulators about these practices, it is only a matter of time before financial products and services come under the hammer from regulators again, in an effort to protect customers. Financial products are often complex, but they can be presented as deliberately confusing or misleading, and the regulators will be targeting this. Financial institutions will need to examine how their range of products and services are presented to their customers to make features more transparent.

The main area of dispute here is where the line will be drawn between effective marketing and ‘unethical’ manipulation of decision-making.

As with any regulatory change, this is an opportunity for financial institutions to differentiate themselves in the market by leading the way and preparing for the changes that the rise of behavioural economics will bring about.

Paragliding vs Skydiving – Which is For You?

Are you dreaming to fly? Nowadays people have several options to fulfill such a dream – much more than in the near past. You can try things like flying an ultralight airplane, making BASE jumps, flying a hang glider or paraglider, skydiving and indoor skydiving. In this article I’ll focus on two of the most popular options – both are “engine free” – flying your own light sport aircraft is really complex and expensive, so let’s not talk about that. Let’s instead of that see whether Paragliding or Skydiving is the right sport for you.

What Is Paragliding?

Paragliding is a recreational activity, considered an extreme sport, practiced by using an engine-free aircraft. The aircraft used in paragliding are extremely simple and they are often called just “wings”. A typical paraglider consists of a fabric wing and a harness. There is no cockpit like in the “real” gliders neither a hard wing like the ones that hang gliders have. Exactly this however is one of the important reasons for the raising popularity of paragliding – paragliders are affordable and don’t take much space. You can even put one in a large backpack, which certainly can’t be done with a glider.

In paragliding you are launching the aircraft by foot – usually people use hills where they run and jump to start flying. Paragliding gives you good amount of control over the flight. Although not generally used for transportation, paragliders can serve for this purpose because one flight can continue up to several hours. Of course that depends on the weather conditions, your skills and other factors.

What is Skydiving

Skydiving looks similar to paragliding because of the equipment but the similarities probably end here. Skydiving is an extreme sport that involves jumping with a parachute from an airplane. Unlike paragliding, skydiving evolved from a practical activity used a lot in the military as a safety mechanism for airmen. Skydiving jumps generally continue less than paragliding flights because the jump is simply said a movement from up to down instead of horizontal flying. The parachutes in skydiving offer less control of the flight than the paragliders do. Skydiving is often practices also as performance sport – groups of skydivers perform various figures. This is less likely in paragliding which is more a sport for pure pleasure of the individual or the tandem who flies.

Paragliding vs. Skydiving

The advantages of paragliding over skydiving are mostly two: in paragliding you have more control and can fly much longer. You can also choose a direction for your flight and travel some distance. The second major advantage of paragliding is that you don’t need an airplane to lift you – just find a hill, run and start flying. It’s so cool indeed.

Skydiving however also have its advantages. First, you don’t need to run – the airplane does the job for you and you can concentrate entirely on the activity you wanted to do in first place. Second, in skydiving you can reach higher altitude – often the jumps start at 12,500 feet – 14,500 feet above the ground level. You can’t go as high in paragliding unless you have some really high mountains near you. And third, the feeling of the free fall before you open the parachute is something that can’t be compared to anything.

What the Food Is Like On A Navy Ship

I was in the navy for 8 years, and I’ve had food from navy destroyers, aircraft carriers, submarine tenders, and shore duty galleys.

When a ship is in port, it always had plenty of fresh food on board. Right before a ship pulls out to sea, it is replenished with new food and drink.

If you going to be out to sea for a while, you will start to lose some of the things on board you take for granted. Fresh milk is usually one of the first things to go. They substitute it with powdered milk, and it does not even come close to real milk.

Don’t get me wrong, the food on the ship is actually pretty good, and you get plenty of it!

When you are in port, you have access to the freshest foods the navy has, just like your hometown grocery store pretty much.

When you wake up in the morning, you go down to the galley, and get in the chow line. There might be 10 guys in line by the time you get down to eat, and breakfast is usually served most of the morning, because not everyone can eat at the same time, and it would be over crowded then. On smaller ships, like destroyers and frigates, you usually would have 4 meals a day. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Mid Rats, a small meal that make around midnight for people that are still hungry, and want something to eat.

On the destroyer I was stationed on, we would also regularly have cook outs right on the fantail. We always had a 55 gallon drum that was cut in half, and someone from the Supply Department would be frying cheeseburgers, and that was always nice, even out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, we would be having a cook out.

For breakfast, you can usually order your eggs to order, there will be a cook or 2, that take requests for how you want your eggs made, they had a rule not over 5 eggs, I usually only had 2 most of the time, and I would tell them I want a ham & cheese omelet with 2 eggs, and then after I get my eggs, I move down the chow line, and get whatever else I want to go with that, bacon, sausage, just like a small buffet really.

Usually on Fridays, if we were in port, we would have steak and lobster tails on Fridays. I never even really had a lobster tail until I joined the navy. My dad never liked sea food when I was a kid, so we never had it in our house.

Lunch and dinner were usually like a buffet also, just about anything they had, was a line of good food, and you take what you want, and you can always get a new tray and go back in line again, if you are that hungry.

The aircraft carrier I was on, was actually way too big of a ship for me, and I was so glad I only had to stay on it for 2 weeks. There food was good also, and it had 2 galleys, so that one was always open, if the other closed for cleaning or whatever reason.

When you have roughly 5,000 people on board, you better have a place for them to eat all the time, just like a casino, if the ship had slot machines on it, it would be pretty close to the same atmosphere of a buffet.

When I was in transit somewhere out in the Indian Ocean, I had to go to Saudi Arabia to get on a flight to Italy, and a helicopter flew me and about 5 other enlisted guys out to this USNS ship, and we were supposed to just ride the ship for 2 days, until we got off the ship. They had an enlisted 1st class yeoman that had his own stateroom, which on a regular navy ship, just the officers get.

This was a USNS ship, which meant it had civilian workers, and the navy personnel was support for them. When we ate in their dinning room each day, a waiter would come to our table, and he would take your order. I thought to myself, you have to be kidding me, these guys are wearing civilian clothes, and a waiter is taking their order, and I can’t even believe this is real. They give you a choice of 2 selections, sort of like on an airplane, and they bring you ice cream as dessert, and I thought that was unreal.

Most of the civilians on that boat were not cool like the navy guys, probably because they thought the navy worked for them, which on that ship, they sure did, and I could think of several ways to save the navy a boat load of money!

Submarines get some of the best food in the fleet. They guys are under water sometimes for so long, and could you imagine if they did not have good food?

They have a drink they call bug juice, which is really Kool-aid or a fruit punch drink. You better get used to drinking bug juice, if you like something to drink with your meal, after the fresh milk runs out.

Here is one of the craziest things I’ve witnessed on the ship, and every ship does it! It is such a waste of good food, but I guess you can see how it does protect the states from pests and bugs, but does it really?

When ever you are going out to sea far, you usually stop by Hawaii to get new stores, as they call it, which means you are stocking up the ship with fresh food and meat and stuff like that.

As you travel the world, and then are returning, before you stop by Hawaii, you have to throw all the food that could have any chance of having any type of bug from another country in it, so we have a working party, of maybe 20 guys, and the job is to make a line from the food refrigerators, which a ship has several decks of them, all with elevators to make it all together, and we unload all the food, 50 pound bags of brand new onions, lots and lots of them, big boxes of lettuce, lots of boxes of it.

We throw just about everything this is left in the coolers overboard into the ocean, and all the guys just can’t believe we are throwing all this good food overboard, and we bet a lot of sharks are following the ship, and can you imagine how much food an aircraft carrier would throw over board. An aircraft carrier has a place on the back of the ship for throwing trash into the ocean, but only when you are out 50 miles or more to sea, so it does not wash up on the shore, and so many things are thrown in the ocean, besides food. You can sit and smoke a cigarette, and just watch all the people that have trash to throw in the ocean, pretty bizarre in a way, but you can’t have it pile up on the ship.

I would have to say overall, the food in the navy is good, maybe even great, I would of never thought it would be as nice and plentiful as it was, and some days after being out of the navy, I swear their spaghetti is still the best I ever had in my life!

Financial Stress Is the Number One Cause of Divorce

Financial difficulties, and the stress that accompanies them, are the leading causes of divorce. Nearly every marriage goes through monetary trouble, but is divorce the solution? I don’t think so! My conviction is that, if you and your spouse can get through all that debt and all those bills, the process will actually make your marriage better.

Divorce is also the number one reason for people filing bankruptcy. A big debt can certainly break up your marriage, but what benefit can a divorce have on your finances? Many couples don’t even discuss money issues, plan a budget, or set back savings. Why would divorce be the answer to this communication problem? A divorce can be expensive and will thus propel you further into debt. But the most costly part of the divorce process will be losing the love of the person you vowed to remain loyal and devoted to. Your marriage vows included “for richer, for poorer” — not “for richer and richer.”

You need to spot money problems early and attack them together to avoid disaster. Casting stones, belligerence, and screaming at a spouse does nothing to eliminate financial stress and, instead, takes the focus from solving the problem at hand. Don’t let your debt run your life; step up to the plate and assume control of your finances. The key is to work together on a realistic and reasonable budget based on the goals that have been set. Track your spending, and make your dollars go further by sticking to this budget once it is in place. You will have a step by step formula for figuring out where the most important place to utilize your money will be. You can then determine what expenses you can cut back on or hopefully eliminate.

Begin a savings account. I have a habit of telling my clients to open a savings account on the other side of town. The reasoning behind this is: the temptation to draw out funds is will not be increased by convenience. Even better than that, use an automatic withdrawal system to set aside a predesignated amount from each paycheck. The best strategy is to try it out with a small sum at first, then increase the amount periodically for as long as you can. Unexpected bills and emergencies are unavoidable. It’s good to be financially prepared for them by keeping some money set back.

Use the money Jesus has blessed you with wisely, as he doesn’t want us to be slaves to debt. We must trust in God, because he knows what we can handle. He will continue to bless us with more if we prove smart and able to handle his prized possessions. When we trifle with the possessions and blessings we’ve already been given, the Lord usually takes them away.

Do not panic over financial stresses. Don’t presume that placing blame on your spouse or even contemplating divorce is the answer to the crisis. Sit down together, take a deep breath, and grab that legal pad to put the issues in writing. To ascertain your needs, visualize your situation. Call creditors and talk to them about hardship programs. Take a part time position to tide you over.

Contact a credit counselor who can help you make better financial decisions from here on out. By seeking counsel from a professional you will share the burden of overcoming your financial troubles. Facing them alone will make things more challenging and costly.

Should You Change Your Medicare Advantage Plan During The Annual Enrollment Period?

Should you change your Medicare Advantage plan?

Medicare recipients have access to a wide array of health and drug insurance options. These plans vary widely from company to company and from place to place. For people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the question is: Should you shop around for a new plan for 2013?

If you are thinking of changing plans, here are some important considerations:

Will all of your doctors be in the new plan's network? Some people do not mind changing doctors if it means saving money. Others are terrified of changing doctors. Keep this in mind when considering switching to a new plan.

How will your current medicines be covered under the plan you are considering? If you take only generic drugs, you should not have a problem – but brand drugs can be covered differently from plan to plan. Under different plans, co-pays for the same brand name drug can be dramatically different. This can add up to hundreds of dollars each year.

What do local healthcare professionals think about the plans in your area? Actually, a great person to ask is the receptionist at your doctor's office. They usually know which plan (s) the doctors like. The most common complaint is how difficult it is to get approval for tests and procedures. Doctors and their staffs are frustrated with some plans because of difficulties and delays in getting "prior authorizations". Getting some 'inside' information can be valuable in your decision making.

There are many things to consider when evaluating Medicare Advantage plans during this year's annual enrollment period. Remember, the annual enrollment period this year runs from October 15 – December 7.

(There are some exceptions to changing plans outside the Medicare annual enrollment period.) If you move you may be able to change plans or, if for some reason, your plan is terminated, also there are some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans that you Can switch to anytime during the year. If you have a Medicare supplement plan you can change any time during the year.)

You can compare the plans available in your area, and even enroll in a new plan should you choose, by visiting Medicare.gov or calling 1-800-MEDICARE.

Alternatively, many people appreciate help when evaluating their choices. For residents of California professional assistance is available, as local agent Michael Kortz will be happy to explain your options and provide the information you are looking for.

How Long Will It Take to Recover From Traction Alopecia?

People who suffer from traction alopecia or other forms of hair loss commonly want to know how long the recovery time is until their hair begins to grow. Traction alopecia is different from other forms of alopecia as it is brought on by physical actions placing tension on hair follicles. In other words, you develop traction alopecia after you have pulled your hair constantly.

The pulling is commonly a result of a hair styling process or routine. Additionally, hair extensions have also been known to cause traction alopecia and those women who often wear extensions are at the highest risk of developing the condition.

Hair loss caused by traction alopecia generally begins at the front hair line, but can also occur at the crown of the head or in the form of generalized thinning of the hair. Much like other hair loss forms this condition can cause the sufferer to have a reduced lack of self confidence. The hair loss in other assorted areas of the head can significantly reduce the number of hair styles that can be used; thus creating more stress.

The good news is that you can re-grow the hair you lose from traction alopecia. However, before choosing surgery as the treatment plan, it is suggested that you first allow your hair a chance to grow back naturally. The process will certainly require patience, time, and caring for your hair but the end results will be well worth the effort. Traction alopecia recovery times can range from just a couple months to years. Recovery time will directly depend on the degree of damage caused and the length of time the abuse lasted for.

Whether you like it or not, during traction alopecia recovery times you will have to avoid the hair styles that caused the damage in the first place. Regardless how many articles you read that claim extensions or braids are okay as long as they are not tight on the scalp, don’t listen to this advice. The weight alone from the additional hair will cause additional stress to hair shafts that are already weak and aggravate follicles that are already sore. Hair extensions and braids that are fitted can lead to scalp inflammation. The inflammation alone symbolizes the scalp is stressed. So, it is in your best bet to avoid all activities that further stress the hair follicles and scalp. However, there are a couple things you can do to speed your scalp’s healing process up.

First, you need to halt the application of damaging chemicals such as colorants and relaxers. For example, relaxers are used to permanently straighten hair that is naturally curly. The chief reason hair is curly is due to the keratin products that make up the hair contain amino acids referred to as cysteines. The cysteines link each other by disulfide bonds as two sulfur atoms connect to each other. The more disulfide bonds contained in the hair, the curlier the hair will be.

Relaxers simply go in and dissolve the disulfide bonds and cap them so they cannot reform chemically. Commonly, relaxers use a base or reducer like lye (sodium hydroxide) to break up and cap the bonds. Sodium hydroxide in itself is a very strong chemical that can damage your hair or burn your skin. Even if a commercial relaxer is considered safer and gentler, they still use the same chemical reaction to break the disulfide bonds and cap them. When a scalp is affected by traction alopecia, it contains follicles that are damaged and may be inflamed already. Applying a relaxer to a scalp like this will only further aggravate the situation as it will burn and irritate skin exposed from missing patches of hair; thus prolonging your recovery time. You are not recommended to relax your hair until it completely grows out again.

Nutrition and diet play important roles in recovery as well. Eating foods rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals such as fruits and vegetables will also help start the biological healing process. It may also be in your best interest to begin taking supplements to make sure you are receiving nutrients essential for hair growth. You can always choose a supplement specifically for hair growth. Many of the vitamins made specifically for hair contain 200mg of Biotin and other nutrients such as magnesium, iron, zinc, and selenium. In particular, biotin is great for increasing the length of time your hair remains in the growth phase which will also keep your follicles actively producing hair.

Protein, however, should be of the utmost importance to you. In fact, lean sources of protein almost always contain vitamins essential for hair growth. However, most importantly your hair is created for protein which makes it essential for the production of keratin. Easy ways of increasing protein intake is by consuming protein cookies, shakes, and bars.

In conclusion, to reduce the recovery time for traction alopecia you should begin by quitting the hair styles that stress your hair follicles out the most; you only want to wear hair styles that do not apply any tension at all to your hair. Additionally, refrain from applying chemical relaxers and colorants to your hair. How to Light Up Stained Glass

Stained glass is so beautiful when displayed in a window where the sunlight shines through the glass. The effect of the sunlight reflecting light through the various glass textures and colors adds a dramatic elegance to the room.

To install art glass into a window opening you have two options. Purchase or make a glass piece that is the exact size of the window opening. Place the art glass piece over the existing window and secure with molding or brackets. Be sure to thoroughly clean the window prior to installation. To display smaller art glass pieces, hang it above the window using decorative chain or fishing line.

If you do not have a window where you would like to display your art glass piece, you can create a faux window. With a press of a button, your art glass will light up.

To turn your art glass into a faux window, you will need to make a shadow box. To make a shadow box you will need wood for the outer frame, sides and back of shadow box. You will also need rope lights or strip lights that will fit into the interior measurements of your shadow box.

First measure the length and width of the stained glass piece. Take these measurements from the outer perimeters of the glass. If you wish to have a mitered frame, add the width of the framing stock to your measurements.

Example: Measurements of perimeter of stained glass piece is 21″ x 24″.

Width of wood for frame is 2″.

Using a miter saw or miter box, cut 45 degree angles on each end.

You will need 2 pieces that are 25″ and 2 pieces that are 28″ from tip to tip.

Use wood glue and trim head screws to assemble your frame. Now you are ready to make the box part of the shadow box.

Cut 2 pieces of 1-1/2″ wide wood that are equal to the outer length of the art glass piece plus 1/4″ and two pieces that are equal to the outer width of the art glass piece plus 1/4″ and 2 times the thickness of the wood.

Using wood glue and brad nails assemble box sides and attach to frame. This leaves the back of the faux window open so that you can insert your glass. Place stained glass into shadow box and attach with glass brackets and/or silicone. Then add strip lights or rope lights around the interior of the box just behind the stained glass insert.

To make the back of the shadow box, cut a piece of plywood or masonite to fit over the assembled box sides and frame. Be sure to make a hole for the electrical cord. Using wood glue and brad nails, attach back to box sides.

An alternative to making a stained glass lighted shadow box would be to hang art glass in front of wall flooded from above by flood bulbs which are mounted behind a soffit. This method requires the glass artwork to be hung away from the wall about 4 – 5″. You can accomplish this by hanging art glass from the soffit which will allow the lighting to be behind the art glass just like sun shine coming through a window.

Climax in Music

What is a climax in music? A climax is essentially the most intense and emotional part of a phrase. It is not necessarily the highest or the loudest tone, but it is the most emphatic one in the cycle of a performance phrase or a musical section. There is always a beginning, a climax and an end. The climax can occur at any point between the beginning and the end of the cycle, but usually occurs in the middle.

To really get a grasp of what a climax cycle is, let’s take some nonmusical examples. Let’s take laughter, for instance. While one is laughing, they hit a point where the laughter is most emphasized, usually followed by some sort of breathlessness (especially in the case of deep laughter) and winds down. The emphatic part is the climax. Another example would be drinking a glass of water. In the actual motion of the glass, which is changing from one point in space to another, when the bottom reaches the highest level of elevation, it technically marks the climax of that cycle. A third example would be, say, a party or an event of some sort. It may take months to plan but when the day comes and the ceremony happens, that is the climax of that cycle.

As a musician plays several phrases in any given piece of music, they hit several climaxes. This actually varies from performer to performer and is perhaps one of the most distinguishing factors in a musician. As music is not just some mechanical action and involves sense and feeling, including emotion, determining the climax and bringing it out is more of a human element than “just a mechanical” element. Therefore, it is an essential aspect for musical performances of any kind. Unfortunately, however, it is all too commonly neglected, which results in mostly mechanical “performances” which do not impart any meaning to the listener, thus actually violating the very principle of music!

How, then, can a musician remedy or improve this? There are two movements which one can do that will help you gain a sense about this. They are not just theoretical, but involve actual practical doing. Try it whether you are a musician or not. First, turn your hand so that the palm is facing up and make a fist. While listening to one performance phrase, gradually and slowly open your hand, extending it until you perceive the climax in that phrase, wherever you personally perceive the climax to be. Your hand should be entirely open and you should see your palm when the climax happens. Then gradually close your hand into a fist shape again while the cycle of that phrase ends after its climax. Repeat this action with that same phrase, over and over, until your movement is in sync with that climax cycle. Try this with other phrases as well until you feel you can do this easily.

The other movement is called “fountain like”. To do this movement, first stand up. Take one phrase and, while listening to it, gradually and slowly lift your arms above your head, much like a fountain. Your arms should be extended toward the ceiling when you perceive the climax. Then drop your arms loosely, thus concluding the embodiment of that cycle of the phrase. Again, repeat this action with that same phrase, over and over, until your movement is in sync with the climax of that piece. Try this with other phrases as well.

By doing these two movements (especially the “fountain like” one), you will actually reach a higher awareness of the climax, and, if you are a musician, this will make a marked improvement in your own ability to perform emotionally as well as technically, no matter what level you are. Please note, you will only fully comprehend this by actually DOING these movements, not just hearing about them. This is very crucial. For example, one can explain all they want what an apple tastes like to you, but if you have never actually eaten one, you will never truly understand the taste. Well, the same philosophy applies here. It is that important for one to actually DO this.

This is all part of a philosophy known as “movement education” or “body in performance”, developed by Dr. Alexandra Pierce, Professor Emeritus, University of Redlands, whom I studied under. Movement Education embodies the several aspects of music (such as phrasing) in a physical, kinetic form away from the instrument. The results are a much more meaningful performance, as music becomes much more sensational, using one’s entire existence and not just one sense, hearing.

Dry Penis Skin – How to Treat It How to Prevent It

One of the most common penis problems men experience is dry penis skin, which can include itchiness and, when penis is erect, an uncomfortable sense of stretching or cracking of dry skin even a slight sense of pain. There are a number of factors that can cause this problem but fortunately there are a variety of options to treat dry penile skin and steps to prevent penile skin from becoming dry. Aside from visiting a health professional which can be costly and prolonged, the least time consuming and least expensive method is probably to use a penis health creme on a regular basis to avoid the chances of developing dry penis skin in the first place.

What is dry penis skin?

As the name suggests, dry penis skin is skin on or around the tip of the penis that feels dry when touched. It can be particularly noticeable when the penis is erect, and is generally characterized as skin that is not supple, feels “dry” and occasionally is uncomfortably sensitive, even painful.

What causes dry penis skin?

There are a number of factors that can lead to penis skin becoming dry:

• Friction – an excessive rubbing of the penis can cause the skin on the tip of penis to become dry and sore. In its simplest form this can be caused by overly tight or rough clothing but excessive masturbation or prolonged periods of sexual activity can also cause this problem.

• Allergies – certain chemicals that the penis can be exposed to can lead to the skin becoming dry and irritated. These may include spermicides in condoms, products in soap and detergents or perfumes. Checking your allergies with a doctor can help cut down on these problems.

• Psoriasis – Occasionally, men can experience psoriasis around the genitals which may not only affect the penis but also the inner thigh, buttocks and groin. Again, a doctor will be able to prescribe a cure for any genital psoriasis.

• Washing with soap – although many men think they are being hygienic by washing with soap, some chemicals found in the products can remove a protective oil, known as sebum, from the penis, leading it to become dry.

What problems can dry penis skin cause?

Although it may only sound like a relatively minor issue, dry penis skin can lead to sexual and genital health problems:

• Loss of penis sensation – over time, excessively dry skin on the penis can lead men to experience a loss of penile sensation, making it hard to get or maintain an erection and possibly leading to an unfulfilling sex life.

• Penis skin cracking – dry skin on the penis can result in microscopic cracks over time, which can allow bacteria and other microscopic organisms to infiltrate the penis, enter the blood stream and may lead, eventually, to infections which can occur anywhere in the body

• Soreness / Itching – No amount of pain is pleasant, but in a sensitive area like the penis it can really become an issue, affecting sex life and leading to a lowered sense of self confidence and potential damage to the penis over time.

How to treat dry penis skin

A doctor may be able to prescribe medication for specific allergies, although to prevent dry penis skin altogether a penis emollient that contains penis specific ingredients (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) the combination of which ensures dry skin on the penis is dealt with quickly and efficiently. A penis health creme can also be used to help prevent other problems related to dry penis skin, such as loss of penis sensation and red, irritated penile skin.
