What Old People Can’t Do

We old folks are often given impossible task. Marketers, newspapers, cable television companies, news channels, pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers, etc., all absolutely hate us. They give us these impossible task. As a public service to marketers and other that deal with we old folks, here are some things that old people can’t do:

1. Old people can’t get to the telephone before you hang up unless you are a telemarketer.

2. Old people can’t read the small print on prescription drug bottles, the instructions for safe use, or the dosage for nonprescription drugs.

We can’t read the instructions for putting together that bamboo bird cage (not because it is in Chinese but because the print size is minus 6).

We can’t read any of the small print that flies down the television screen or printed in slick magazines telling us that the drug being suggested may cause diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, and sore gums.

We also can’t read the conditions for leasing or buying that new car being pitched on television or in newspaper ads.

3. We can’t hear news people when they lower their voices or decide to mumble as they do everyday on our Twin Falls station, channel news stations, and for dramatic, on regular TV programs.

4. We can’t watch bad news. (Anyway, I can’t. My wife always changes the channel.)

5. We can’t lift over 5 pounds so don’t suggest 15 pound barbells to help us get our muscles “back in trim.”

6. We can’t open packages containing things we really want to get our hands on like a new television remote, a DVD, an electric car, a CD player.

The plastic is so thick that our carpet knives don’t even cut it.

Listen to this you packaging engineers: Old folks don’t have acetylene torches.

7. We can’t follow the instructions for putting up that shed in the back yard.

We have to go back and remove Part 100653 and put in Part 100458 then put Part 100653 in again, etc.

This always takes 45 minutes.

The shed is supposed to go up in 3 hours.

It takes us 3 days if we can get our children to “take over” and finish the project.

8. We can’t see what is on television because of the brainless twits on the cable company’s television guide channel.

A field of only two channels passes by at the bottom of our screen while the twits distract us from watching the bottom of the screen.

It takes 5 seconds for the two channels to whip by and reveal two more channels.

One blink and you have to start over.

Also, you have to watch all the digital listings pass by before the analog channels appear again.

That’s why I hate my cable company even if they have very nice employees that don’t want me to switch to you-know-what. (I had one of those things on the top of my house and the cable guy took it down and through it in his truck. I never got a check for the thing.)

I want the old screen back that shows a full screen of analog channels and nothing else.

I know. If I would add the digital channels I wouldn’t have this problem. I could click around like on the you-know-what. Well, I’ll tell you a secret. That doesn’t work for me. When I’m at my grandkid’s house, they have to find the right channel for me. (They always find something they like better than what I want to watch.)

Well, if I switch to satellite I will have less of a problem.

(P.S.: My cable company doesn’t answer hate email.)

9. We don’t understand why a zillion companies are selling the MedicareRx Prescription Drug Plan.

When we get to the drug store we find that either they don’t take “your plan,” you can’t have the drugs anyway because of some medical mumbo jumbo, and that our drugs are in Tier 3 which have a higher co-pay than our old plan.

(We know that President loves the plan. That one reason why we can’t love President Bush.)

10. We can’t copy that telephone number we need to call to get Great Battles of World War II for only $9.95.

We wait for 25 minutes to get the number and it flashes by before we find our ballpoint pen won’t write (which we tested on the newspaper while waiting.)

So, let’s summarize:

Old people can’t see as well as young people.

Old people can’t hear as well as young people.

Old people can’t think as fast as young people.

Old people can’t memorize as fast as young people.

Old people can’t move as fast as young people.

Old people have aches and pains that distract them.

Are you great communicators writing all of this down?

Is it Worth Planning a Career in Welding?

However one may have selected welding as one's profession for life, one should not dismiss planning as the most important ingredient in building one's advancement.
Why should one plan a career in welding? Because planning in advance is the only way to obtain outstanding results. Essentially it may be true for any career. But in welding, for some reasons, it may be even truer.

A young person may have heard on welding completely by chance or after having performed some search with job orientation agencies. But it is rare and almost impossible that all job openings are available to qualified persons be manifest to those just starting to look into the matter.

After having enrolled in a professional course one can reach an elementary stage of performance and find a job, which at a certain time in one's life may be the most important worry to put at rest.

But then, depending on the person and on the job, one could be caught in the trap of thinking that the position reached is on the whole satisfic. One could even plan to stay there until retirement. Why bother for improvement?

There are serious reasons to take into account. One is job security: as long as one's skill is just minimal, it can be quite easy to find a replacement at the slightest pretext,
Like the introduction of robotic or automatic welding or outsourcing abroad of some operations that can make a job superfluous.

Another reason is that gaining improved knowledge and skills permits assuming greater responsibilities that normally command a better pay.

One should know that welding is articulated in a lot of different processes, each with its own methods and tips of the trade, depending on materials and type of construction and that there is constant improvement and progress.

It is true that many operations are done now exactly as they where thirty or sixty years ago. On the other hand new and different ways have been introduced over this time to perform better welds more economically.

Learning and knowing as many processes as one can master is the first step. One should then be able to demonstrate one's practical ability by taking tests and gaining Certificates. These are documents that testify as to one's qualifications to perform satisfactorily certain welding operations. Without proper Certificates it may be impossible to get even job interviews.

It may be difficult to know in advance which of the many certificates offered may provide the best rewards in terms of job advancement and salary at a certain time in a certain place.

It is out of doubt however that the person collecting the maximum number of those documents demonstrates a superior level of preparation such as can be requested for important supervision positions.

A good welder with a few years of practical experience can become with some further training a good inspector or a good instructor. These capabilities may provide less tiring, easier and better paid jobs.

One should be aware of the fact that a profession likely to be more and more requested in the near future may be that of welding robot technician. This type of work will need a whole new set of expertise not usually associated with welders' skills.

In conclusion, the best advice one could give to a young candidate welder is to read, study and learn as much as possible. The career should be planned in view of acquiring, in a given time frame, a set of Certificates as may appeal to the individual preferences, to build the experience necessary for a remuneration welding occupation.

What is Impatience Costing You?

“Patience is the companion of wisdom.”

-Saint Augustine

“Do not be desirous of having things done quickly. Do not look at small advantages. Desire to have things done quickly prevents their being done thoroughly. Looking at small advantages prevents great affairs from being accomplished.” Confucius

What is Impatience Costing You?

Last weekend my husband and I were planting several small flowering trees that we received for a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation. Even though I knew before the trees arrived in the mail how small they would be, I was disappointed when I saw them. The trees were just tiny sticks with a few roots. Looking at these sticks, my first thought was “Why bother to plant them? They will probably not be of any size and beauty during my lifetime.” I wanted instant flowering trees and didn’t want to wait years to see results. Of course, I could go out and buy larger trees to see flowers sooner, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that every big tree was at one time a tiny stick, and it takes years of Mother Nature’s patient nurturing for the tree to reach its peak.

As we started to plant our trees, I wanted to just quickly dig a hole in the ground, plant the trees and be done. Instead of enjoying the beautiful sunny day and being outside in perfect weather, I was ready to move onto the next project. But my husband, being more patient than me, insisted that, if we were going to do this job, it needed to be done with proper steps. The steps being: dig a large hole, pick out all the rocks, loosening the surrounding soil, mix in organic compost and fertilizer, plant the tree, and then water. These steps would ensure that the tiny trees had a fighting chance. My way, (skipping 3 steps in the middle), would have resulted in the trees dying or being stunted. So my way, with my desire to save time and get the project done, would have actually been a waste of time.

I know that I am a project driven person and sometimes I am so focused on the results that I take shortcuts. Often this impatience to get to the end leads to having to do the project over again or scrapping the project. So what do I accomplish by rushing? Frustration and poor results. (Luckily my husband, with his engineering background, intervenes and saves the project when we are working on something together). The good news is that I am finally getting the message that impatience is harming me. My goal is to focus on the process, find pleasure in each task, and let the result come in its natural course.

With our hectic lifestyles, it is easy to rush to get more done. Where is impatience working against you? Are you, like me, so focused on the result that you forget to enjoy the process? Are you willing to slow down and find pleasure in all the steps? If you do, the results will be even better. I know – I just took a look at our trees and was excited to see new growth already!

Action steps you can take:

1. Examine your current projects; are you rushing to get to the end?

2. Put 100% of your focus into each step along the way; give each step your best effort.

3. Have fun with the process and watch the results be even better!

Professional Video Techniques – Triangle Lighting

Triangle lighting creates spectacular lighting for video interviews. Triangle lighting is just what the name implies, light from three sources pointed at one subject.

Triangle lighting takes a bit more work but the results are worth it. Next time you are watching any show that features lots of interviews, examine the lighting critically. Can you see the halo effect, evidence of a back light? How much difference is there between the bright side of the subject's face and the darker side? How deep is the nose shadow? Are the eyes lit clearly? Are glasses causing an annoying glare? Is there a splash of dappled light on the background? Triangle lighting is a common professional technique.

In triangle lighting, you have three light sources.
* Key light
* Fill light
* Back light

The key light should be the brightest of the three. As the name implies, it is your main light. The key light should be placed so it illuminated the majority of your subject's face, and this usually means having your camera fairly close to the key light. The key light should be off to the side of the subject's face about 30 degrees.

Your fill light should help do what the name fills, fill in the shadows created by your key light. Typically, you do not want to eliminate these shadows completely, you simply want to make them less dense so the key light should be less bright than your key light.

Your back light gives your subject what is called the "halo affect," a bright rim of light which outlines the head and highlights the hair. It is very flattering and helps your subject stand out from the background.

Setting your back light can be a bit tricky. You do not want it to create lots of weird shadows on the face so it needs to be reliably dim and focused directly on the back of the head.

Problems with back lighting include glare into your camera and unflattering shadows on your subject's face or shoulders. In order to avoid those problems, make sure the back light is placed enough to the side so it will not cause glare. To eliminate unwanted shadows, most back lights are fairly dim and readily heavily on barn doors. Barn doors are used to aim the light precisely where you want it and keep it off the places you do not. If you do not have barn doors, use aluminum foil. A special type of black foil is sold by professional lighting companies. It is not very expensive and works better than aluminum foil, but aluminum foil is functional. DO NOT use anything flammable, like newspapers.

Another gadget, called a snoot, works much like barn doors but in my opinion is better for back lights because it is easier to restrict your beam of light to your subject's hair. A snoot is a black, metallic shield shaped kind of like a cylinder. It has a narrow hole in the front. Placed over the light, a snoot restricts the beam to a small circular one. Snoots are great, but not very common.

Triangle lighting can be modified by adding a fourth light, called a background light. This light is just to brighten up your background and can help add a sense of depth to your shot.

Since a bright background is a no-no (it creates a silhouette) the background light should be fairly dim. When you are watching high quality documentaries, like what is on the History Channel, most interviews are shot with intricate background lighting. The background lights are often colored with color gels and templates are placed over the light to give a dappled effect. Color gels are nonflammable plastic sheets you place in front of your light. They are cheap, effective and come in all colors. Color gels are a great, inexpensive way for a low budget video to increase its professional appearance.

The templates placed in front of light to create a dappled pattern are often made from foil. Rip off a sheet of foil, poke some holes in it and there you go!

Triangle lighting and its variations are perfect for interviews. However, even in the professional world, not every interview rates triangle lighting. Often, interviews are done with only a key light. Sometimes a key and a fill will be used. Sometimes a key and a back light will be used. It is all acceptable and any added light on an interview always looks much better than just relying on natural light. My habit was to light interviews but try to shoot supporting video (b-roll) in natural light.

Janis Joplin’s Wrist Tattoo – A Symbol of Feminine Power

Janis Joplin

Janis Lyn Joplin born on January 19, 1943 was unassailable one of the biggest if not the biggest female rock star idol in the history. Janis’s nickname was Pearl. Somewhere in the 60’s she buried the old Janis Lyn and started the second part of her life as Pearl. “I’m tired of being Janis, call me Pearl” she said. Not only Janis Joplin but her wrist tattoo as well are still a subject of imagination to many.

Janis Joplin’s Wrist Tattoo

Her wrist tattoo is not only a symbol of the legend Janis Joplin still is but also a symbol for the liberation of women. The design represents a Florentine bracelet and was placed on her outer wrist. The tattoo is black, with a mix of another color. The exact colors are difficult to determine because of the fact that there are only a few black and white photos of the design available. A Florentine bracelet is a historic piece of jewelry. Fifteenth century century Florentine goldsmiths engraved metal with a chisel and filled up the engraved ornaments with a compound made of lead, sulfur and silver. The result was a highly contrasting very visible design. Just like Janis ,one of the first famous wearers of a wrist tattoo in modern pop culture, being very visible and contrasting.Janis Joplin said this about her tattoo: “I wanted some decoration. See, the one on my wrist is for everybody; the one on my tit is for me and my friends.” She paused and chuckled, “Just a little treat for the boys, like icing on the cake.”

Lyle Tuttle

Lyle Tuttle born in 1931 is one of the biggest legends in the tattooing industry. He started his tattooing career in 1949. Tuttle has had a great positive influence into taking tattooing from underground to mainstream. The great artist tattooed the famous design on Janis’s wrist in his shop on Seventh Street in San Francisco. When asked for his explanation for the fact that tattoos gained popularity in the 1950’s he replied: “Women’s liberation! One hundred percent women’s liberation!” Women were free to get a tattoo if they wanted. This development resulted in Tuttle tattooing almost nothing but women and changed the perspective tattooing was in. “Women made tattooing a softer and kinder art form.” Tuttle said. Lyle Tuttle retired from tattooing in 1990.

Janis Joplin’s Wrist Tattoo as a Symbol of Female Power.

Tuttle’s most well known clients are pop stars Janis Joplin and Cher. These are both women who are known for being strong. Their tattoos have certainly contributed to image. Joplin is said to brake that male barrier. She made women stronger, more assertive and self confident. That must be one of the reasons the Florentine bracelet design is a very popular design for a wrist tattoo for women until today. On October 4, 1970 Janis Joplin died on her hotel room as a result of a heroin overdose.

How to Buy the Right Air Compressor

Dan is a DIY kind of guy. He wants to do everything on his own from installing the wood floors to painting his son’s bike with airbrush. Right now he needs a new air compressor because his old one just past it’s lifetime. He wanted a new one for a long time but his wife insist that he will keep using the old one until it broke off. It finally did. He felt no love for his old compressor and happily loaded it onto his truck and drop it off on the dumpsite. Now that he got rid of the old guy it’s time to find a new one.

Dan really wants to buy an air compressor that will give him allot of bang for his buck. Mind you, his wife won’t let him spend big bucks to buy one. She think it’s such a waste to spend lots of money to buy a big boys toys.

He decided to spend some time thinking about it . Grab his little notepad and starts jotting down to list what are the essential things that he wants from his new air compressor. Luckily he agrees to share us what he just wrote there so let’s take a peek :

Quiet

Dan lost count on how many times his wife complain about the noise his old compressor gave. He wonders if she couldn’t stand it why doesn’t she just let him buy a new one a long time ago. Anyway, Dan never really mind about the noise because he thought that is just normal. But a couple weeks ago he visited his friend’s workshop and found out that his buddy’s air compressor make noise just as if a vacuum cleaner is running next door. It was so much quieter that his. He asked and found out that it was an oilless type so it has lower noise factor. He is making note to make sure he’ll buy an oilless compressor this time to make his wife complain less when he’s working.

Wheels

His old compressor was a stationary type so he was relying on really long cords and hoses when he wanted to work other that in his own workshop. He doesn’t mind if he get one with wheels made of hard plastic. As long as he can move it around easily he is more than happy.

Fast

The old compressor took almost two whole minutes just to reach 150 psi. Dan think it’s a bit overkill just to reach that pressure. Just like anybody else he hates waiting. He want a compressor that is fast enough especially when he’s doing non-construction works like pumping the bike tires, etc.

Space saving

As a long non-believer of the cliche “bigger is better” Dan prefers small tools to do the job. His workshop is already too crowded with everything else anyway so after asking left and right he want to buy one with space-saving vertical design.

Easy maintenance

Dan really hates getting on his belly to open and close the drain plug off his old compressor. And he also hate how the drain just can’t drain the water completely from the tank in either the vertical or horizontal positions. He decided that before buying he will asked the seller to demonstrate draining the compressor and if seller is making ugly poses while doing it then he ain’t gonna buy it.

Now, those five factors on Dan’s note aren’t the only signs of quality air compressors. You will need to add your own personal preference of course. But i sincerely hope that the short list can help you finding the best compressor from all those choices in the market.

Using Lean Six Sigma and ACFC for Fueling Business Growth

This is because when employees develop negative feelings for Lean concepts being implemented, it becomes very difficult for the organization to garner their full support and cooperation, something that is vital for the successful implementation of Lean concepts and methodologies. Large scale employee dissatisfaction can in turn also begin affecting the quality of products or services, something that will be sufficient ironic because the basic tenets of 'Lean' state that quality should never be compromised while underlining steps to reduce operational costs.

What organizations often fail to comprehend is that the main aim of Lean concepts is to make available unutilized or underutilized capacities, already existing within the organization, which can then be used for delivering new products or services. This is exactly how a Lean organization should try to reduce operational costs rather than reducing the headcount.

Using Lean Techniques Such As ACFC

For reducing operating costs in the right manner, businesses can utilize effective lean techniques such as ACFC that stands for 'At The Customer, For The Customer'. This technique was first utilized by the General Electric Company and since then it has proved so effective that it is now being used by many other multinational corporations, including big names such as Siemens, Xerox and 3M. This technique is quite different from conventional Six Sigma techniques and methodologies because it functions as a part of the existing customer environment and directly affects the buying behavior of customers.

Lean projects involving ACFC are managed directly by Green Belts and Black Belts who are required to handle only the most strategic customer accounts so as to improve the performance and quality of the deliveries in accordance with specific customer needs and expectations. Most ACFC projects that need to be completed within a 45-day cycle, and aim at passing on the benefits not only to the customers but also to other related entities such as suppliers. As such, ACFC works best for organizations planning to convert their suppliers into full-time business partners.

How It Works

The aims and objectives of the ACFC technique may be quite different from conventional Six Sigma tools and techniques, but it still relies on some of the traditional Six Sigma methodologies such as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) and DMADV (Define , Measure, Analyze, Design and Verify). The ACFC process involves identifying and ranking new revenue generation opportunities, after which the opportunity that holds the most potential for revenue generation is selected for conversion to an implementation Lean Six Sigma project.

To achieve the best possible results from ACFC project implementation, it is necessary to consider the cost factor as well and not only the revenue potential, during the selection process. Once this is done, businesses will have no problems whatsever in reducing the operating costs and that too, without having to resort to extreme measures such as downsizing.

Make A Difference With Shingle Recycling!

Shingle recycling has gained momentum in recent years due to comprehensive research and enhancement of its potential marketability. Many industries are taking advantage of this unique opportunity to promote environmental sustainability and conservation through reuse and recycling; one industry needing to embrace this effort is the construction industry which faces increasing waste in its daily activity.

With an ongoing demand for greener solutions in the handling of waste material, roofing companies are encouraged to recycle asphalt shingles to create other viable products and lessen the impact on the environment.

Waste Production

One of the most popular types of residential roofing material used in the United States is asphalt shingles. It makes up a total of eight percent of building-related debris and one to ten percent of annual construction and demolition waste, occupying thousands of cubic yards of landfill space across America according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

There is an estimated eleven million tons of shingle waste produced annually in North America, created by manufacturing scraps, extras from installation, demolition debris, tear-offs and re-roofing. This is an alarming statistic and quite threatening to the environment; modern refuse management strategies must come to the forefront and face this challenge.

Waste Management

In order to establish a cleaner and waste-free society, numerous governmental agencies and other organizations are adopting strategies that can reduce the negative environmental effects of residential demolition and resulting residual debris. As technology evolves, shingle recycling is becoming an effective means to minimize and prevent the adverse impact of such refuse on the environment while also helping economic development and offering other opportunities to enhance the quality of life.

To convert the trash produced from factory rejects, end-runs, demolition scraps and re-roofing projects into renewable products; contaminants such as nails and woods must be removed by a rotating magnet or floatation before being put into grinding equipment. The material is then graded and sized depending on the grinding machine that is used.

Products, Benefits and Application

Since the market is continuously growing and expanding, recycled asphalt shingles can be converted into products such as hot-mix asphalt for use as a paving supplement; cold patch for pothole repair; temporary roads; driveways and parking lot surfacing; dust control; and as a sub-base for road construction – all of which are potential markets and opportunities for shingle recycling. When used as a road paving material, it can enhance pavement performance; prevent rutting; avert thermal fatigue and cracking; and resist wear and moisture damage. After many years of scientific studies and research, this type of waste product is both a good source of profit and an effective means of eradicating waste and increasing landfill space for a greener environment.

The market for shingle recycling has accelerated its growth during the past several years. Researchers and numerous other business enterprises are choosing this green option as one of the best solutions to decrease waste by reducing the burden on landfills; there is also the added benefit of being extremely profitable. Indeed, by processing this type of waste product, ecological-sustainability will be promoted and a great deal of landfill space will be saved. A side effect is a decrease in the amount of virgin oil that is required to produce asphalt paving. Recycling shingles can really make a huge difference in saving the environment!

Negotiate Like a Savvy Politician

Politicians are always trying to persuade people to do one thing or another. As such, they are negotiating. Good politicians, like good negotiators, are better at persuading people to see, adopt, and follow their point of view.

Observe the following similarities between a good politician and that of a good negotiator. See if you can strengthen your negotiation skills by imitating some of the tactics politicians employ.

1. Politicians are very adroit at not answering questions that would put them in a 'bad light'.

A. A good negotiator knows how to answer questions with questions, thus changing the direction of the conversation, while not divulging information that might be harmful to his position.

2. Politicians are very good at reframing a question or statement to position them in a more positive perspective (altering a question from its initial meaning to one that has a more positive perspective to the politician.)

A. A savvy negotiator is astutely aware of the inherit value of reshaping a conversation to lead in the direction she wishes to have the negotiation flow.

3. Politicians are adept at reading body language to give them insight into hidden meanings.

A. When a smart negotiator negotiates, she observes clues that give insight into what the person she's negotiating with might be thinking. That insight gives her an additional advantage while negotiating, because she's able to tap into unspoken words that could give more insight than that which is spoken.

4. Politicians know how to use a technique I call, 'Block and Bridge'. 'Block and Bridge' occurs when acknowledgment is given to a question or point. In essence, the question you do not want to answer is blocked, while using it as a bridge to a point you would like to discuss.

A. Like a politician, a good negotiator knows when and how to appease his negotiation partner. By giving a cursory response to the other negotiator's point, the perception is given of having the point addressed. After that, a good negotiator shifts the conversation to the point he wishes to highlight. This is a very powerful tactical that good negotiators use time and time again. Try to use it in your negotiations and you'll discover the value of this tactic.

5. Sometimes politicians talk ad nausea (surprise, surprise).

A. When you negotiate, initially this may appear to be a 'turn off', but used in the right negotiation situation, this can be a tactic that wears the other negotiator down. Occasionally, he becomes so desperate to escape the negotiation environment that he'll agree to almost anything to be free. Note: You have to be cautious when using this tactic, because it can also turn someone off so much that they leave the negotiation environment without giving you what you want and refuse to negotiate with you again.

6. A smart politician develops a campaign strategy before he begins the campaign.

A. A smart negotiator develops a negotiation plan and gathers background information on the subject with which he'll be negotiating to obtain insightful information that will be helpful during the negotiation.

7. A good politician knows how to stay 'on point'. She knows how to advance her cause and employees others to increase the overall potential of success.

A. A profitable negotiator, while developing her plan accounts for potential detours that she may encounter while negotiating. In so doing, she takes into account the maneuvers, strategies, and tactics that she may have to utilize in order to reach the goal of the negotiation.

Watch politicians when they're running for office, or being interviewed. The good ones know how to 'spin' situations to match their message and campaign platform. If they're wrong, or proven to be on the wrong side of an issue, in some cases, they're able to reshape, or reframe the discussion in order to enhance the acceptability of their position. In essence, they control every aspect of the negotiation, to the degree that they keep their constituents engaged. Mind you, the kind of negotiation they're doing is that for the hearts and souls of those they lead. Neverheless, they're still negotiating.

You may not like the political process, or that which politicians engage in to 'get things done', but there are valuable negotiation lessons to be gleaned from observing how they go about doing so. If you add some of the tactics politicians use when negotiating, you will increase your negotiation skills and everything will be right with the world.

The Negotiation Lessons are …

· Never forgo the knowledge you can garner from someone that uses questionable negotiation tactics. At bare minimum, you can learn how to combat such tactics if someone tries to use them on you.

· Always pay very close attention to your environment when negotiating. By doing so, you'll catch nonverbal nuances that will give you additional insight into what your negotiating partner may be thinking, but not disclosing.

· Never forget the value of a good negotiation plan. If you put in the effort to create a good plan, you'll save yourself potential grief during the negotiation. You'll also be better prepared to deal with unforeseen circumstances.

Adding Relevancy to Your Online Presence

The chances are pretty good that you have had your website for a while now. Many business people don’t realize that it isn’t enough to simply build (or have built) your website. The content will just sit there and become stale and stagnant if you don’t take measures to refresh and make it relevant on a regular basis.

Ensuring that your website is relevant

By now, you probably have a brand that is well-developed and quite sophisticated. One thing that you need to understand clearly is that your brand, which you have made such an effort to develop, must be relevant at all times. If that doesn’t happen, you won’t get anywhere in business.

If your online presence content isn’t relevant, there are many other businesses who have relevant content and other people will choose to connect with those businesses instead of with yours.

Interestingly (and, perhaps, sadly) relevance seems like a vague, unobtainable concept to many people. However, one thing that is certain is that it is critical to your business’s success.

Relevance is not something that you are either born with or not. It is something that you can work to build and achieve. There are certain specific steps that you can follow to achieve relevance for your business if your brand and offerings are not relevant at this point.

Another extremely important side effect of relevance is how you will hopefully rank in the search engine pages. For all of those reasons, you should give some serious thought to making your business as relevant as you possibly can.

Develop a client persona

The fact of the matter is that not all of your content will be relevant to every person who reads what you are posting. That is exactly why you need to choose your target audience extremely carefully. If you do that, you will have the best chance of your content being relevant to the people who are reading what you are posting.

One of the mystical qualities of relevance is the fact that relevance never stays the same over time. It is constantly evolving (or, at least, it should be). So, your business can be relevant one minute and then it can be irrelevant the next. That puts a great deal of pressure on you as the business owner but it is certainly not an exercise in futility. It is an exercise that will certainly pay off in spades for your business.

The fact is that relevance is not nearly as elusive and ethereal as you might perceive it to be. It is an extremely important and dynamic part of your business. It is one of the building blocks of your business’ foundation. It is important for you to include it when you are designing your marketing strategy because it will be very instrumental in your success. It is essential for the business owner and for the target audience member.

When it comes to your website, the design is extremely important but the relevance has a much deeper significance than the design has. You can always switch up the design if you want to. However, relevance must always be there and although your website content must always be relevant, how you continue to allow it to evolve is up to you.

In short, you try what you think will work and if it does, great. On the other hand, if it doesn’t work, you will have to try something else. Your client persona is very important for your business. You must cater to the people who will help you to grow your business. Having a persona in mind and developing it in a detailed manner is really what you need to do.

Give your target audience members what they want and need

It is very important that you have a clear understanding of what your target audience members want and need. That is exactly why your content needs to be relevant. It needs to be relevant to them. Otherwise, exactly where are you going to go with that.

Of course, you need several different elements that work together in order for your business to be a success. However, being able to wrap your mind around your clients’ needs is at the top of your priority list. A part of this is choosing the appropriate and most effective keywords and key phrases. That is how other people will search and find you and your business. You need to make sure that they are extremely relevant and effective.

Conclusion

Your content must always be relevant to you and, more importantly, to your target audience members. If you don’t have relevant content, your business will be finished before it has a chance to start. Your goal is to make sure that your content is read, understood, and embraced thoroughly. Content is the tool that you use to connect with people but relevance is the underlying theme for your business.

Tips on How to Grow Barrel Potatoes

Short on space but wanting to grow your own vegetables? When you learn how to grow barrel potatoes, space would not be an issue you have to deal with. Of course, that's just one of the many benefits in container gardening which most individual growers are into these days.

Growing barrel potatoes would be ideal in situation stated above as well as when you live in area with soil that is not suitable for growing potatoes. Aside from this, you also get to maximize your yields since you'll be growing potatoes in a controlled environment. Also, harvesting would be much easier with barrel potatoes and there would not be any risk of damaging the potatoes in the process of shoveling.

Detailed below are the practical steps on growing barrel potatoes:

Prepare the container

First, you need to select the barrel you are going to use. A wooden barrel like the whiskey barrels would be ideal for this purpose. However, you can use just about any barrel as long as its something you can drill holes at the bottom and the sides to allow for good flow of water. Of course the bigger the barrel, the more potatoes you'll be able to grow.

Choose the Seed Potatoes

You can buy seed potatoes from your local nurseries. I strongly advise against using potatoes available in the market as seed potatoes as its been treated with anti sprouting chemicals. Thus, you will not be able to expect much yield using those as seed potatoes.

Additionally, I would also advise that you sprout the potatoes first in an egg carton and placing it in a cool light room out of direct exposure from the sun. After it has sprouted then you'll be ready to plant them in the barrel.

Planting

First, you need to fill the barrel with about 6 inches of soil and compost. Then you can plant the seed potatoes or the sprout potatoes in it. Cover it with soil and have it watered to keep the soil moist and damp. It is best to start plant potatoes during the cooler seasons.

Next, once you see the potatoes sprout to about at least 6 inches tall, you can add another layer of 6 inches soil and compost. Once again, you can plant another layer of potatoes sprout. You just need to repeat the process, keeping the soil damp all the while, until the barrel is full.

Another thing, if you want to grow vegetables organically, planting bush beans alongside the potatoes may be a good idea. It will protect potatoes against Colorado potato beetle and in turn, potatoes protect the beans from Mexican bean beetle.

Harvesting

Once the plant turns yellow and dies, it would mean that the potato is ready for harvesting. As I've mentioned earlier, harvesting barrel potatoes are much easier as you only have to tip over the barrel and sifting through the soil for your own barrel grown potatoes.

Allergic Reactions to Wool Carpets and Rugs?

The natural performance of a wool fiber and it’s durable qualities have protected man for over 25,000 years. Wool is actually a hypoallergenic fiber. Those who say they are allergic are most often referring to the prickle and tickle effect of an old wool sweater. Sitting or laying on wool carpets and rugs rarely, if ever, can cause the same effect. No one has ever been treated or diagnosed for anaflactic shock when coming into contact with wool.

Allergies are widespread in the developed world and that problem is increasing for two main reasons:

  • A great number of synthetic substances and petroleum based products are being used in the home.
  • The improved diagnosis of allergic conditions are now available to those suffering from allergies.
  • There is no reason why asthmatic or allergy sensitive people should not enjoy the comfort and good looks of carpets and/or rugs. Wool is non-allergenic and does not promote the growth of dust mites or bacteria. Wool carpet fibers are too long and too coarse to be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers. In fact hard surface floors allow airborne particles to be disturbed and whirl into the air causing more irritation for hay fever and asthma sufferers.

Recent data from Swedens Central Statistics Bureau, Army, and Flooring Association shows that over the past 20 years while the installation of carpet went down with the increase of hard surface installations, the number of allergic people increased dramatically over the same period.

Wool fibers actually purify indoor air by absorbing air pollutants and gases. Wool fibers absorb common contaminants in indoor air like formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, while not releasing VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). This is one of the reasons why the LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) environmental program accepted wool carpets as the only soft surface floor covering in the initial testing of accepted floor covering products. The approved products are rubber, bamboo, linoleum, cork, and, of course, wool. All of these products are also rapidly renewable, biodegradable, and carbon neutral.

Not only does wool keep the air free of many harmful pollutants, it will not release them, even when heated. It has been estimated that wool carpets can continually purify indoor air for up to 30 years. What a natural and beautiful way to help the earth and improve the comfort in your own home.

If you hear someone say “I’m allergic to wool”, just keep in mind that another man made myth is now explained and hopefully put to rest.
