Avoid Alzheimer's With Abundant Exercise

It takes more than crossword puzzles to keep a healthy brain!

Combine Physical and Mental Exercise

We've all heard that mental exercises exercising memory and problem solving can help to keep our brains healthy and vibrant.

What researchers have found out is that physical exercise not only is good for the heart and general circulation, but also contributes significantly to keeping the brain young.

As professional service providers dealing with challenges involving people as well as data, we need that brain power to perform our work effectively.

Human Studies Came After Studies With Rodents

After earlier studies on rodents showing that those animals that spent a lot of time running in exercise wheels had better brains than the sedentary rodents, studies were begun on humans.

Less Brain-Tissue Shrinkage

Scientist measured maximal oxygen uptake (a gauge of aerobic fitness) in 55 subjects during walking and treadmill tests. They used subjects with fitness levels from sedentary to those in peak-performance fitness. The physically fit subjects had less age-related brain-tissue shrinkage than the inactive subjects.

MRI Aids In Research

With the help of MRI's (magnetic resonance imaging), the researchers saw that the tissues affected in the brain that are critical to memory, learning, and carrying out ideas in the mind were very different in the various subjects. (Frontal, temporal, and parietal regions)

Decline Can Start In Middle Age

These abilities are the ones that start to decline as early as middle age, particularly in new situations. Studies have shown that increased physical activity in middle age can help to prevent or delay the onset of diseases like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of senile dementia, in which there is a marked decline in brain function and memory.

Researchers found that combining strength training with aerobic exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes had the greatest impact on cognitive function. (University of Illinois)

School Children Not Getting Enough Exercise

What concerns me is how the brains of the computer and video game generation will be affected by the lack of physical exercise. It is estimated that nearly half of young people ages 12 to 21 are not doing vital physical activity regularly. Less than one fourth of children are getting at least half an hour of any type of daily physical activity in school. School children spend an average of 4.8 hours per day on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games.

Increased Productivity

Increasing exercise for all ages would be a great benefit for all of us. Healthy brains increase productivity and full engagement in whatever we are doing. Combining physical activity with memory exercises gives the best results for a healthy brain.

Next Steps

What are you doing now to improve the blood flow and oxygen delivery to your brain?

Deciding on what type of exercise you would enjoy and DOING it on a regular basis will determine your short and long term thinking skills.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Starting an Internet Cafe

Many people hate working for a boss and aspire to own their own business. They value not only the potential for monetary success but the independence. But one issue that comes up is that the amount of choices are overwhelming. There are so many types of businesses to start that wannabe entrepreneurs don’t know where to start. One popular idea is an internet cafe. As with any business, there are advantages and disadvantages to starting one. Here are some things to think about before making the first move.

The advantages of an internet cafe are numerous. Probably the biggest one is the low startup cost. The biggest limiting factor for aspiring entrepreneurs is the lack of capital. Internet cafes are relatively inexpensive to start. Computers are cheap. The labor does not need to be skilled. Furnishings do not have to be expensive. This is in great contrast to a restaurant, which usually requires special equipment, extensive refurbishing and a larger area and amount of employees. A franchised restaurant would also require paying the franchise fee.

Second, there are many ancillary revenue opportunities. The most obvious one is selling internet time. But you can also target gamers, by buying some high-end computers and charging more. You can also sell food and drinks (coffee is a popular option) and computer repair services. These multiple streams of income will help stabilize your revenue base.

There are several disadvantages to starting an internet cafe. Since the startup costs are so low, the market is extremely competitive. Many people consider an internet cafe to be a commodity service and will go with a new store if it is cheaper or if the connection is faster.

The Best Way to Remove a Fishing Hook from Your Body

If you have the inexhaustible experience of getting a fishing hook impaled into your hand (or other part of your body) it's a good idea to know how to remove said hook. This article will save you a trip to the emergency room as long as you can deal with a little bit of pain and blood. Not to long ago this exact scene happened to me and I found myself with a # 10 fishing hook stuck completely into my index finger while on the river fishing.

To be honest, once the initial pain from the hook going into your body is over, it's really not that painful. Until you touch the hook of course. The problem with this happening is of course the barb on the hook. The bar keeps keeps the hook in your body, just as it does in a fish's mouth. To remove the hook the only piece of equipment that you need is a piece of strong string of some sort. I personally sacrificed my retractor to get the string to remove the hook from my finger.

When a hook is stuck in your body (this has happened to me more than once) the only part that is visible is half of the curve and the shank of the hook. To remove the hook you want to place the string around the visible part of the curve in the hook. The key in this scenario is releasing the barb and pulling quickly and steadily on the string, so "backing the hook out" the same way it went in.

To release the barb you need to use your hand (in my case the other hand) and push straight down on the visible part of the shank of the hook (yep, this a bit painful). As you push down you need to pull quickly and steadily on the string that's around the curve of the hook. Pushing down releases the barb and the hook will pop right out.

I held the string in my teeth and straightened my arms to pull on the string. This scenario is obviously easier if you have another person to pull the string as you push on the shank of the hook to release the barb. When you can, just clean the hole left by the hook with some peroxide, and you're good to go. This little tip could easily save you the hundreds of dollars an emergency room would charge to remove an impaled fishing hook.

As I said, the only piece of equipment that's needed to remove a fishing hook from your body is a strong piece of string and I personally used the string from my retractor. This is yet another reason to use and have access to a retractor . While searching for a piece of string in my fishing vest, I was happy when I remembered I had a retractor on my vest holding a pair of nail clippers. The string in the retractor was perfect for removing the hook from my index finger.

Table Lamps, Floor Lamps & Lighting

Table lamps are used decoratively and as lighting source in all well decorated homes. They lamps are perhaps the most common type of lamp used today. They are also used for decorative lightings within, offices, restaurant, bars, and other private and public places.

Traditional Lamps

Designs of hurricane lamps are deeply rooted in tradition and will enhance any room in your home. They have a hand blown cut crystal chimney and brass rim, ornamental round base. Outstanding quality and incredible details of hurricane lamps makes each of them a work of art that can become a great conversation piece. Interiors by night can reveal a whole new dimension when given the added sparkle of candle light from hurricane lamps. By placing scented candle in the hurricane lamps you’ll create a romantic atmosphere filled with relaxing fragrance.

Floor Lamps

Floor lamps and desk lamps are following the same exciting trends, and can create a fantastic combination when purchased together while focusing on a particular interior decor idea. Floor and table lamps should be in proportion to the scale of furnishings, height of the ceiling, and size of the room. Many people select floor and table lamps to go with specific fabrics in a particular room, but remember that materials come and go and you may move, so choose table and floor lamps that will be appropriate in many settings. Shaded table and floor lamps look better with frosted bulbs as they are used for soft, flattering, general light.

Designers of contemporary table lamps focus on using new and unique materials to create their artistic and beautiful designs. Designer Table Lamps are worth the price. You can find discount lamps in many stores, but often durability and design are sacrificed. Paper table lamps allow you to select a design and style that best suits your personality. Upward light design is when the bulb faces upwards, so that the light reflects against the ceiling creating a soft and lush light for the room. A particularly popular design is the tabletop chandelier, strands of glowing plastic or glass fibres lighting the room naturally and delicately. Contemporary designers like to focus on creating the best lighting for reading or writing, but also for dining or entertaining. It’s not economically feasible for most people to keep up with the latest design trends by switching out high-ticket items like sofas, but by changing something like pillows and lamps one can instantly change the whole look of a room.

The lamp that you want to purchase should fit well along your other pieces of furniture Looking at extremes, a large dominant lamp has no place in a tiny room, nor would small pendant lamps fit areas that are not intimate in size or where furniture is larger in scale. Table lamps, much in the same manner as furniture, have distinct personalities. When choosing a table lamp, the shade needs to be in proportion to the lamp’s base, as well as with the surrounding furniture. It can change the room without changing any furniture layout or colouring.

Table lamps are a great way to illuminate any room, all the while complimenting your decor. They are also a great way to add a little ambience, or mood lighting, to your overall lighting decor. Table lamps are an elegant and excellent way to provide effective lighting for many areas.

The 6 Principles For Designing A Deck

The process of creating a deck plan, selecting a suitable site and choosing the appropriate features to include should be done with the intention of taking advantage of all of the unique features of your home and backyard as well as the needs of the family members and their Aesthetic preferences. A good deck design grows out of existing conditions and does not create the feeling that the resulting deck was forced onto the site. The important thing is to focus on the 6 design principles that will help you achieve the goal of creating a satisfying and successful deck.

Principle # 1: The deck should be accessible and cause its occupants to want to make use of it. Homeowners, relatives, friends and other guests will not use a deck that is difficult to reach. It should be accessible from the home's interior spaces such as the family room, the kitchen, dining or living room or a hallway. The ideal situation would have the deck access by several entrances from different rooms. Doorways should be wide enough to encourage the transition from indoors to outdoors. Glass doors help to maintain the illusion that the deck is actually a part of the house interior. Entry to the deck from the garden should be appealing. Wide steps can create a dramatic flair but should be placed to allow practical traffic movement for the deck users. Lighting should be utilized to encourage evening access and provide a measure of safety.

Principle # 2: The deck should be a pleasant and comfortable area. The deck design should take into consideration the direction of the wind, the movement of the sun's rays and areas of shade. A privacy screen can provide a sound barrier, a windscreen and / or privacy in any backyard environment. The deck can be located in such a way as to take full advantage of the sun while also offering a shaded area to suit the individual preferences of its occupants. Attention can also be given to orienting the deck in such a way as to provide visual access to pleasing views such as water features, gardens, etc.

Principle # 3: The deck should provide a sense of privacy and seclusion. This can be achieved by locating the deck where it is able to utilize fences, house walls, trees, shrubs and privacy screens. Multi-level decks can provide deck areas that are low enough for privacy but still provide access to the house. Deck railings, low benches and container plants can work together to soften the deck perimeter and create a sense of enclosure.

Principle # 4: A deck's size should be in proportion to its intended uses and the space that is available. A deck area intended for an activity such as dining should be approximately the same size as the home's interior dining room. A deck that will serve multipurposes should have those distinct areas separated by level changes, by the shape of the deck or by the use of container plants, benches or other special amenities. Each area should exude a feeling of comfort. A really successful deck design provides space for movement in and out of the house to each area but is sized in such a way to provide possibilities for quiet conversation or larger group activities.

Principle # 5: A deck should fit in perfectly with its setting. When viewed from any point in the backyard, the deck should blend in with the style of the house and its surroundings to create a unified effect. The shape of the deck should mirror the existing forms in the backyard. Generally using simple shapes creates a more powerful design than utilizing complex ones. Railings should be used wisely in making a design statement. The use of stain or paint can be utilized to help a deck blend in with the house to which it is attached.

Principle # 6: A deck should utilize one unifying element. The perfect deck design creates a feeling of wanting to visit the deck and stay. Several elements work together to create this unified effect. However a single feature or some kind of theme is the key to making everything work together. It could be the repetition of a decking pattern, the continuous line of benches, the style of the railing system or even the use of a single color. It should be a simple, basic element that is related in some way to a similar feature of the house or nearby garden structure such as a pergola, arbor, gazebo or shed.

Good deck design is no accident. It takes place when key elements and principles are utilized to create a space that reflects the needs and aesthetic preferences of its creator. A wise homeowner will concentrate on quality rather than quantity. Avoiding complex or overly ambitious designs is an important consideration.

The key is to take the time to plan the deck in the best possible way so that it will stand the test of time.

How to Identify Car Issues With Your Nose

Did you know that your nose can actually identify certain warning signs of vehicular trouble? Different smells may imply particular problems with your vehicle, and picking up on these smells early on can spare you time and money on auto repairs. Continue reading to learn which automotive smells to be on the lookout for, and what to do if you detect any of these odors in your vehicle.

Unusual Car Smells

If you buy a car right off the market, you can expect that tell-tale new car smell. But after sometime, that new car smell wears off, and what replaces it depends on your interior automotive hygiene. However, it is possible to smell odors in your vehicle that are different from the food, smoke, perfume, and other odors that may generally occupy your interior. In this case, the presence of unusual odors could be a sign that something is mechanically wrong with your car. Below are the 6 most common automotive odors that may indicate an automotive problem.

Look Out for These Automotive Odors:

Gasoline – If you smell gas, it could mean that your vehicle has a gas leak somewhere in the fuel injection line or fuel tank. Since gasoline is highly flammable, it is vital that you take immediate action. Have a licensed mechanic locate the cause of the smell and make the necessary repairs to get your vehicle back to a safe driving condition.

Burnt Rubber – The smell of burnt rubber could indicate that your engine has slipping drive belts or loose hoses that are rubbing against the rotating accessory drive pulleys. This calls for professional auto repair.

Burnt Carpet – Smelling burnt carpet is a serious sign since it usually indicates a problem with a vehicle’s braking system. This is a serious safety hazard that should be addressed by a professional mechanic immediately upon discovery.

Hot Oil – Hot oil smells could mean that your car has an oil leak that is causing oil to get into the exhaust system. If you also see smoke coming from the hood, or oil on the pavement below, it is most likely an oil leak. This calls for professional service.

Sweet Syrupy Smell – Sweet syrupy smells are an odd odor to experience in your vehicle, but they are also quite serious since they may be an indication that your vehicle has a coolant leak in its cooling system. Get professional auto service right away.

Rotten Eggs – The smell of rotten eggs, or sulfur, is a sign that your car’s catalytic converter is defective. When catalytic converters stop converting hydrogen sulfide into sulfur dioxide properly, it can cause the smell of rotten eggs. This sign requires immediate professional automotive service.

Never ignore odd odors in your car. Consult a licensed automotive mechanic right away if you smell something unusual, especially while driving under normal conditions.

Direct Support Professional: Bridge Builders of Community Inclusion

Direct support Professional’s (DSP’s) have an important role in assisting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in becoming a part of their community. There are three areas we will explore in increasing successful community integration. Understanding the meaning of community inclusion is an important first step. Second, one must understand the significance of natural supports for people having developmental and or intellectual disabilities. The third step is community bridge building. There are many speed bumps that exist on the road to community integration, but integration can be achieved with an open mind, patience and positive attitude.

What is Community Inclusion

Community Inclusion is sharing in community life specific to four areas. The first area is to have a physical presence in one’s community. This could be living in a normal house in a normal subdivision with all types of neighbors. Cultural integration is important as it also helps establish a common likeness and acceptance. Cultural norms may favor a particular type of job or go to a specific church. Connections with others are an important, necessary ingredient of inclusion. Relationships with all kinds of people not just people with disabilities is a requirement in inclusion. Just as important is self-determination in forming relationships and choosing activities. Activities and acquaintances should be choices of the participant and not based upon convenience of a DSP.

Equally important is to understand what is not community integration. If a participant is on a van with a group of other program participants in the community, the fact that they are on a van with others in the community is not community integration. Just because a person goes to the Day Program for people with disabilities in the community, it is not considered real integration. If a person lives in a regular community or subdivision, this is not necessarily community integration. Community inclusion requires active participation in one’s community, with all types of community members.

Natural Supports

Natural supports are merely life. We all have natural relationships in life. This means we have community connections and relationships with all types of people. Examples of natural support are friendships with coworkers, being friends with various church congregation members, having family relationships, having a neighbor that brings soup when you are feeling ill. Natural supports build a sense of interdependence with others. Interdependence is a mutually beneficial connection between two people. These relationships are based on commonality and a sense of mutual respect. Interdependent relationships act to provide safety and security for the participant. Participants with community associations and natural support are less likely to face abuse, neglect and exploitation than those who do not have connections.

Community Bridge Building

The DSP assists the participant in building connections with community members, friends and community organizations. The DSP serves an important role in educating the community on the importance of acceptance and understanding. One of the best things a DSP can do is be a proper role model for behavior and communication for those they support. DSP’s should not assume that participants understand socially acceptable ways to interact and make good first impressions. DSP should keep in mind that participants face stigma and are viewed unfairly based on media portrayals or simple ignorance. Relationships take time to build, and DSP’s should encourage frequent community involvement

7 Car Care Tips You Must Know

Every car owner looks for ways to maintain his vehicle perhaps in ways that save money or at least help their vehicle to run better. Whatever you do, you’ll want to ensure that your car looks and runs its best — you’ve paid tens of thousands of dollars for your ride, so taking care of it will help take care of you and wallet.

1. Take it to the car wash –– Cleaning your car at home seems to make sense, particularly from a cost vantage point. However, you’ll go through more water at home than what a car wash uses and you’ll also risk scratching your car by using towels not designed to do the job. Visit your local car wash and buy coupon books to get more washes for less money.

2. Leave the lights on — Some cars come with daytime running lights, which means your headlamps are always on from the moment you engage the ignition until you turn it off. For everyone else, headlamps kept on even on a sunny day provide better warning to other drivers of your proximity, thereby reducing the risk of an accident.

3. Change your oil less frequently — You’ve heard the one about oil changes every three months or 3,000 miles, right? Well, that information is no longer accurate. Modern cars can go at least 5,000 miles between oil changes with no harm to your engine. Check your owner’s manual for the precise maintenance intervals and be prepared to save yourself some money.

4. Use a tuner chip — So-called aftermarket parts can help your car perform better. A super tuner or super chip can help your car’s engine perform better, by upping the horsepower without hurting fuel economy. Check with your mechanic for the tuner or chip that is right for your car.

5. Empty the trunk — Once winter ends, you don’t need that 40-pound bag of kitty litter, the shovel and all of the other stuff you keep in your car. It isn’t too difficult to carry an extra 50 to 200 pounds onboard. Lose the extra stuff and your gas mileage will improve.

6. Tackle the crack — The moment your windshield gets a nick, plan on taking care of the problem before it worsens. Neglect the nick and you’ll have to replace the entire windshield, costing you hundreds of dollars. Fill the crevice with an optically matched resin that should keep cracks from occurring. Your insurance company may waive the deductible if the repair is small.

7. Replace aged tires — Your car’s tires may not be worn, but they may have aged out. Tires that are seven or eight years old should be replaced even if they haven’t been worn out. You may not see visible signs of wear, but that doesn’t mean that the rubber is still able to bring your car to a safe stop.

Final Thoughts

As with any car, get to know your driver’s manual. That book, found in your glove compartment, can offer much guidance on how to maintain your car, saving you money and keeping your safe on the road.

Commercial Painting Budgets – Budgeting For Commercial Painting Projects

If your maintenance budget for the current operating year has a taken a hit, you may be wondering how to get a commercial painting project completed along with everything else. Two possible solutions to project budgeting are purpose driven spending and changing the contracting process.

Purpose Driven Spending The most common view of a commercial painting project is simple maintenance and facilities up-keep. Justifying painting and coating projects as preventative maintenance is reliably easy because the surface treatment can prevent damages to the underlying structure. If the budget separates preventative maintenance funds from operating costs, you could package and combine the painting project according to its true purpose to get the funding from your management team.

However, painting and coating can be a lot more than simple up-keep. In a retail setting, the appearance of a structure can have a direct impact on the amount of business the facility is able to attract. If the current maintenance budget can not support a painting project, sometimes the marketing budget could.

Changing the Contracting Process

As a commercial painting budget solution, changing the contracting process may seem like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. However, the savings from a new way of managing contracts can be significant, especially if your facility does a lot of outsourcing. Many large organizations adapt a job order contracting system (JOC) to handle their contracting process. A JOC system is a type of indefinite demand and indefinite quantity contracting system which relates to pre-defined base prices for services. Contractors bid by multiplying the base prices by a selected co-efficient.

JOC systems are often used by schools, government agencies and other organizations to streamline their contracting process. The real savings come from reduced advertising costs, reduced administrative needs, and a quick RFP to finished project time. According to a white paper published by Centennial Contractors Enterprise, Inc., the savings associated with a JOC system can be up to 21 percent of standard costs.

The advantage of a JOC system is that once in place to cover a painting project, the system is equally applicable to virtually every other outsourced aspect of facilities budgeting. However, if you are not currently using a JOC system, you should probably consider hiring an expert consultant to help you implement the program.

Final Words

Facility budgets are not likely to increase anytime soon, so creative solutions are a must to find room in the budget for commercial painting, construction and maintenance projects. In the end, whether your company chooses purpose driven spending or changing the contracting process, the ability to establish a companywide logical decision-making process and get management buy-in is critical to the company's success in managing your commercial painting budget.

Two Must Have Tools to Dramatically Increase Sales

If someone asked you as the sales professional, to name the two must tools that would dramatically increase sales, what would be your response? I recently asked this question to a group of small business owners, sales professionals and executives. The answers were many and included these:

  • PDA
  • Calendar
  • Business Cards
  • Elevator Speech
  • Cell Phone
  • Computer
  • Vehicle
  • Website
  • Thoughts
  • Customer database

All of these are great answers, but to increase sales begins before you utilize any of these tools within your daily sales behaviors (sales skills).

Before I share what I believe are the two most critical tools, let me ask you a question. Where do you begin to increase sales?

  • Do you attend more business networking events?
  • Do you buy more ads be them Google or media?
  • Do you make more phone calls?

All of these activities could possibly increase sales, but this is not the real place to begin. The real place to start is take your thoughts and turn them into actual written plans and goals.

During the past 10 years, I have lost count of the number of sales professionals to executives who tell me that they want to increase sales. My first question is "Have you placed your sales goals to writing?" The answer over 90% of the time is No. My response is how can you increase sales when you do not know how much you want that increase to be; Where you want those increases; And the results specific to profitability from those increases?

By now, you may realize that the TWO most critical tools to increase sales are a pen and piece of paper for a proven goal achievement worksheet. For when you commit a goal to writing using a proven goal worksheet, something almost magical happens. You have taken an intuitive thought and turned it into something tangible. Sales Coaching Tip: Start with pen and paper and then when writing your sales goals becomes a routine and daily habit then look to your computer.

Think of the every day common written grocery list. Now remember what happens when you leave that list at home. Failure to have that list creates additional wasted resources of time, money and energy. When you have that written list in hand, you stay on budget, save time and save your own physical and emotional energies.

Even if you only use a pen and a piece of paper you will increase sales. However to secure a dramatic increase requires the use of a proven goal worksheet that contains a goal achievement process.

Sales Coaching Tip: So if you really want to increase sales, find a proven goal achievement process that has been integrated into a goal worksheet. Then take pen in hand and commit each sales goal to writing. Finally, work that goal each day as an integral sales skills and within a very short time, you will realize your sales goals.

Meat Dehydrators

If you're in the market for a meat dehydrator, let's first discuss how they work. A meat dehydrator is an appliance that removes moisture in meat for its preservation. A dehydrator uses heat and air flow to reduce the water content of food. The water content of meat is anywhere from 50-75% depending on the animal. You might be asking yourself, why should I remove the water from my meat while trying to preserve it? The answer is simple; Dehydrating meat restrains various bacteria from growing and spoiling the food.

There are 3 main parts to a meat dehydrator; A heating element, fan and air vents. The heating element heats the food allowing the moisture to be released. The fans and vents then work together allowing moisture to be removed from the food. The process of drying meats can take hours and usually lowers the moisture content by 20 percent. So while shopping for a dehydrator that fits your needs, be sure to find one with these 3 basic elements. The key to successful meat dehydration is having the proper heat and airflow simultaneously. The most common use for a meat dehydrator is making jerky. Meat dehydrators usually dry meats at temperatures from 130 degrees to 155 degrees, which is usually used when preparing jerky.

There are various brands of meat dehydrators, but the most important part of buying any kitchen appliance is finding the perfect one for you. It's not so much about the brand as it is about the style. Remember, different brands have different drying techniques, find the one you like, and enjoy!

Military Surplus vs Modern Commercial Guns

Military Surplus Guns or MilSurps can be an extra great deal. I was first turned onto milsurps about a year ago. Since then I have become Cruffler or Curio and Relic Firearms Licenced. It basically allows me to purchase curio and relic, C & R firearms, both longarms and short, via the internet or local dealer without a waiting period and have them shipped directly to my house. Now before all you anti-gun nuts out there get in an uproar, C & R firearms are over 50 years old and / or listed as a relic by the BATF, so it's cool. Now onto the topic. I collect and enjoy shooting anytype of gun, new or old. I prefer Milsuprs though and here's why.

First of all they're cheap. My first Milsurp, a Russian Mosin Nagan chambered in the potent 7.62x54r was bought at Big 5 sporting goods for $ 79.99. In a matter of 20 minutes I was able to purchase the rifle and a box of ammo. This is a bolt action rifle and was at least 4 feet long but still cool.

Second the history. I'm not necessarily a history buff, but I do enjoy learning about the wars that the rifles may have served in. Seeing the pantina and grime on the old warhorses really sparks me imagining the soldier sitting in a foxhole somewhere hugging that rifle for dear life. There is lots of debt out there about restoring a milsurp, by extensive cleaning, and stock resurfacing. I see both sides of that fence. It could be so beautiful if resanded and stained, but yet the character that age gives it also makes it beautiful.

Third, it's addictive. They're like potato chips, you can not just get one. Currently I own 6 Milsurps and can not wait for my next purchase.
Fourth the Ammo. For the most part, it's cheap and abundant in many of the calibers, both surplus and commercial. My SKS shoots 7.62×39 and I can buy a 500 round tin of this caliber for about $ 40- $ 50 delivered.

CONS to milsurps.

They're cheap. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I've been rescued and not received anything I was unable to live with. I read stories of some real sewer pipes out there (horrible barrels). These are mostly limited to the pawnshops and gunshows. Some folks try to unload their junk on others. Most of the big online dealers like Centuryarms, AIM, and SOG have pretty good grading criteria and will allow you to return things if you get one that slipped through grading process. Civilian Markmanship Program is an excellent and probably the only way to buy true American milsurps that have not been re-imported from pledged governments, sorry guys no select fire's ever, this includes M-14's and M-16's. I bought my M-1 Garand from them, it's balls on accurate, new barrel I tink and only set me back $ 395.
Some are ugly. This one is questionable, beauty is really in the eye of the beholder, some like wood and metal, others like plastic and composites. It's a personal choice. I know for a fact if I ever run out of ammo for my Garand in a firefight, I can always beat them to death with a few blows.

I own both, milsurps and NIB, new in box, modern weapons. They both have distinct advantages and disadvantages. But when I'm at the range and someone asks me what I'm shooting it's because it's not another 10/22 or remington, etc ..

5 Familiar Bodybuilding Troubles…Which Do You Want To Overcome?

In my 3 decades of training experience I have identified 5 major bodybuilding troubles or problems. These are:-

1 Overtraining…training too much…too often and too long. Not taking a complete week off every 3 months…

2 Under eating…Not eating enough…you need 6 meals per day minimum…every day, including weekends…

3 Neglecting the window of opportunity for rapid growth by not taking Whey protein and creatine immediately after training…

4 Not stretching properly to facilitate easy growth…

5 Not focussing your mental muscle on who you want to become…

1 Overtraining…training too much…too often and too long. Not taking a complete weeks break or rest every 3 months.

This would have to be the most common trouble that hinders many would be successful bodybuilders from realising their full potential. And it’s a particularly insidious trouble because we have been taught that to get things in life , we have to work hard. Well that’s true to some extent both in life and weight training. In weight training we have to train hard as far as intensity goes…if you want to get big you need to push big weights. But where the problem creeps in is that we apply rules from other places that don’t apply to weight training. The rules I am talking about can be best illustrated with an example. I want to grow a big bank account…So I work a few jobs or set up a few businesses that give me multiple streams of income. Hey presto…that works…my hard work and long hours returns lots of money and a big fat bank account.

The problem is when we apply this more is better to weight training, with the underlying premise that if training 3 days per week made me gain 3 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks…then if I train 6 days a week I should be able to put on 6 pounds of muscle in the same time. Or if training 30 minutes per workout made me gain 3 pounds…then if I train an hour and a half(3 x as long) I should be able to put on 9 pounds(3x as much) BIG MISTAKE…BIG TROUBLE…The logic on the surface sounds OK…but the underlying reality is quite different. The only thing the extra training does is burn you out and frustrate you with diminished returns. When I owned and operated my two bodybuilding gyms I used to see this all the time…and you just can’t tell some people.

They are so caught up in the belief that more is better that they are too scared to cut back on their routine lest they slip back…the irony is they won’t “slip” back…they will actually burst forwards because they are unaware that they are being held back by over stressing their body. Don’t get me wrong…hard work isn’t bad…and sometimes its the persistence factor that gives (lands) us the big win. But the way to burst through sticking points is not to add exercises or volume (sets, reps)…but to add or increase intensity.( bigger weights…higher resistance…less rest between sets) Now since volume and intensity are inversely proportional, it is only logical that to increase intensity you also need to reduce volume. To overcome this block or obstacle requires you to do less…but make what you do even harder.

Another trouble related to this is the myth that as you become more advanced…you need to train more. Nothing could be further from the truth…you actually need to train less (but smarter…with more intensity) The reason for this is because although your strength and size becomes greater over time…your recovery ability does not increase to the same extent…your ability to recover improves only marginally compared to your ability to get stronger. Why does this happen? Think of it this way…when you first started and had, for example 12″ arms…

If you did a set to failure of bicep curls, the amount of stress being inflicted on your total body wasn’t that great because 12″ arms don’t require that much blood flow and the small muscle cell size isn’t much of a drain on your energy or nervous system. However, when your arms have grown to say 18″ and you do a set to failure…the weight will be huge compared to when you were a beginner…and the subsequent drain on the bodies total energy system and the shock effect this has will be immense. Although your strength may have improved by over one hundred percent, your bodies ability to recover won’t have…your arms might be 50% greater in size…but your capacity for recovery won’t have increased by 50%(more like 30% maximum)… and this leads to the condition of overtraining that we are talking about. So as you become more advanced…keep thinking of ways to make your training harder (more intense) but shorter in duration and less in volume.

I remember years ago I was at a sticking point with my own training…and I was getting really frustrated. Nothing seemed to work for me. I thought I was doing everything optimally…eating right…getting plenty of sleep etc…but my weight hadn’t budged for months. I was at 89 kilos and I desperately wanted to break the 90 kilo barrier, but nothing seemed to work…I suppose the 90 kilo barrier to me was like Roger Bannister’s four minute mile…this was my four minute mile…which the final solution was to be a four minute instead of four hour (I’m exaggerating here, but I hope you get my drift) exercise workout!

Time to try something different I thought…what I was doing obviously wasn’t working…so I had nothing to lose. I had read Mike Mentzers Heavy Duty training book, which had just been released. His Arthur Jones based training ideas were quite revolutionary…Incredibly heavy, hard intense workouts that were very brief. So I started experimenting with this style of training. I remember everybody thinking what the hell is he doing…some were even chuckling behind my back…despite the fact that I was by this stage a successful competitive bodybuilder. I remember one exercise session vividly…the first time I did heavy negatives on the dip rack. I got my training partner to help me suspend a 100-pound dumbbell via a chain from my training belt. He would help get me to the top position of the dip by lifting me at the knees, and I would have to lower myself slowly under control to the bottom.

The weight was so heavy I couldn’t even do a single positive rep on my own. I finished my first set of 4 reps, and when I looked up I noticed the whole gym had stopped to watch what I was doing. At first people just dismissed this radical for the time style of training…but when after only 3 weeks I had busted through my sticking point and my weight soared to 92 kilos… people weren’t laughing anymore. I was stoked. I purposely had not weighed myself for three weeks because I was hoping to get a pleasant surprise…I felt and knew this new style of training was working for me based on the mirror and judging by the fact that my strength was rapidly improving (100 pound db was too light for the dip now because I was capable of doing positive reps with it).

I would have been happy to have just hit 90kg…but I overshot it by 2 kilos (4.4 pounds). I was sold on this new style of training…a 3 kg (6.6 lb) gain in only 3 weeks…after months of not putting on an ounce…and with a fraction of the amount of work I had been previously doing. At first everyone wanted to know what I was on! What I was on was an incredibly effective training routine, and soon others started copying and getting similar results. And it wasn’t before too long 90 kilos seemed like a joke as I crashed through the 100 kg barrier(220 pounds) But this never would have been possible for me if I had just followed the masses and continued with my 20 sets per body part training systems.

So my advice to avoid this problem of overtraining is to continually be searching for ways to make your workout harder, not longer. Do less, but achieve more. Bigger weights…less sets…higher intensity…less rest period between sets…less exercises…less training days…more rest days…this will ultimately make your workouts super effective…and more fun!
