Free Inspiration

Supposing you could make whatever you wanted, what would it be? This is one of the most challenging topics for a starting young sculptor. You’re not quite sure yet of your own abilities, what is important, what gives you energy. What creation will provide enough curiosity to keep you going for years to come? In what way will that contribute to your own improvement in the area of shape and composition?

My predominant subject is Being Human. The way people feel, interact, what they do to each other both in a positive and a negative way intrigues me and I have no doubt it always will. We may try to escape Greek tragedies and fierce emotions or look the other way. But they do exist in the same harsh and unpleasant way as centuries ago. When, in ancient times, Greek mythology was born with all its’ love, revenge, blood, cruelty, conspiracy and mystery. That is after all what mythology consists of.

I may well never stop studying shape and composition. It’s an experience I have with every portrait I make. Each portrait is new, each face is different from the one before. I always start with a shapeless chunk of clay that needs to be modelled into the exact shape and expression that will capture the other person’s soul. And I still find that hard repeatedly. Each time anew I have to seek, fight, swear, make mistakes and amend, let go and hold on.

Observing the patterns of nature is also a great way to acquire more insight into shape and composition. Just look at the world around you and detect an indefinite amount of forms, rhythms, arrangements, constructions and composition. Nature is diversified and abundant whereas people tend to construct nothing but boxes and squares. Look at the stem of a horsetail herb. It is round with ridges and as it goes up you can see sprigs, tiny leaves and small brown rims in a regular pattern. Stems come in all shapes, square, triangular, round, with five sides. It is possible for a tree trunk to grow spiralling upwards. Tree bark comes in a profusion of miscellaneous varieties. Cork-oak is simply amazing but even the more modest species will be able to astonish you. Just use your eyes!

Nature also surprises us with the most unpredictable colour combinations. Behold the beak and head of a pelican. You will detect yellow, red and blue in small blotches and stripes, quite remarkable. Observation of your surroundings simply provides you with a source of beauty at an arm’s reach. Obviously not all things are exquisite and fortunately you’re not required to commemorate it all. But do make a note of the extra special things. In your head, in a notebook or in your phone. You may never use it in your work, not straightaway at least. But it will contribute to the improvement of your own sense of beauty, your own awareness of composition, rhythm and skin. It will dig itself into your being and that is nice. A wonderful, never-ending tutor and all you have to do is open your eyes!

Why Quality Prefabricated Steel Buildings Are More Popular Than Ever

One way to have a commercial metal or steel building created and sent to you is to purchase a prefabricated steel building. They can be built at the factory and shipped directly to your site. Shops that specialize in creating prefabricated steel buildings can ship them almost anywhere. When the time comes to purchase your steel building, you will most likely meet with a project coordinator. That coordinator will go over the entire project with you from beginning to end. In the end, you will walk away knowing the most productive and least expensive way to accomplish your goals.

Slowly but surely, commercial steel buildings are taking over the industry. Conventional construction methods are fast becoming a thing of the past. For one thing, steel is strong and non-combustible. It is electrically safe and works well with just about all other building materials. Furthermore, it's very stable, has a long life span and requires less maintenance than other products. Prefabricated steel building products are used for roofs, barns and all sorts of large constructed free-standing structures.

Most of the time, your project will come with a 25 year warranty on the steel products used. The construction of these commercial buildings is much easier than most other methods and is also very economical. Prefabricated steel buildings allow customers more freedom to plan large building projects without tying up much needed financial resources to have the project completed. When considering the company to go with for your prefabricated steel building, it's important to remember that not all companies are the same.

A lot of companies out there may count on the fact that you do not truly know the difference between different building methods. Take time in your search for a company that will explain the differences and point you in the right direction. Pre-engineered steel buildings help provide customers with structures that are flexible and efficient while meeting the customer's needs. Be sure the company you deal with has experts that are not just out to make a buck. You need to know the best way to provide more usable space.

It would be extremely irresponsible for a company to provide you with the plans for a huge building project when a prefabricated steel building would be perfect for your needs. Whether you are in the need for an airplane hangar or merely a barn, a prefabricated option is also easy to expand upon. This gives your company the ability and freedom to make future plans that are cost effective. When planning your company's next addition of space, keep prefabricated steel buildings in mind. They could very well be the perfect answer to your company's needs.

Find Out the 3 Ways to Hang Up Your Projection Screen and Which One is Best For You

There are 3 ways you can install your projection screen. The right way depends on your room, so there's no universal best way.

Here are the 3 ways to hang up your screen with the advantages of each method

1. Wall mounting

The big benefit from hanging a screen up on the wall is that you can decide at which height it will be. By hanging the screen lower or higher, you can determine at which height the image will start. This is especially handy when your screen has a small or non-adjustable top black border.

The disadvantage of this method of installation is that the case of the projection screen is clearly in sight. So it's not ideal if you want an "invisible installation".

2. Ceiling mounting

When you do want your screen to be virtually invisible, it's best to install it close to the ceiling. With the screen that high up, it is not as much in sight. But, you lose the flexibility to influence the starting position of the projected image. So it's best to use this installation method when your top black border is large and can be adjusted.

3. Suspended installation

If you have a sloped ceiling or you want to create the effect of a floating screen, you can use wires to suspend the screen from the ceiling. It looks great when thin wires are uses, as the floating effect is something you do not see every day.

Having the screen hanging from wires does affect the stability. You notice this most when you operate the screen (especially when you have a manual screen) or when there's a draft in the room. That means it's only suitable when you know how to operate the screen carefully.

It's not an easy installation either, because to get the screen level and balanced can be quite a bit of work. The exact amount of work depends on the design of the case.

There are several ways to install your projection screen. Wall mount the screen when you do not have a flexible or large top black border. Fix it to the ceiling if you want the case of the screen to be less visible when not in use. When you have a sloped ceiling or you want to create a cool looking installation, you can not beat a suspended projection screen.

Flooring – A Complete Analysis

Most of us would like to cover the normal or built floor with another material. Various reasons to go for flooring are due to weather or climatic condition of the area, to keep the floor clean, to absorb water that is spilled, to give a different look to the floor etc. In other words installing a floor cover is known as flooring. A finished material is applied over a floor or on a walking surface in the process of flooring. The finished material includes carpets, rugs, wood, ceramic tile, stone, linoleum or vinyl finishing, terrazzo and various other chemical flooring.

When you decide to go for flooring to your home, you need to consider various aspects before you decide on the floor material. Check the cost, endurance, comfort, cleaning, noise insulation etc. Material that can be used for flooring can again be classified into soft and hard covering.

Soft flooring material includes woven or handmade fibers. Fitted carpets can be used as flooring as it does not move from place to place like normal carpets. These are generally delicate as the name suggests. A good quality underlay or carpet padding is an absolute necessity for soft floorings to extend the life of your carpet and also increases the comfort factor

Hard Covering or flooring includes plywood and other types of tiles. They are stronger and studier compared to the soft flooring. Also hard covering much more durable and last long lasting then the softer ones. There various kinds of tiles with all the latest technologies involved in tile making these days. Ceramic, verified are some of the examples of the contemporary ones at present. Also many of the natural stones such as marbles are cut into variety of shapes and sizes and used for flooring.

Mosaic is another type of hard flooring tile. Mosaic is nothing but arrangement of small pieces of stone to form a design or picture. You can see mosaic mostly in religious regions. Mosaic is available in various color combination. Mostly mosaic is cut into square sizes that be arranged to make a proper flooring to your home.

It is very important to select the right flooring for the floor based on the requirements. For example you can not use the same type of flooring for a gym and a house. Wood flooring is not appropriate for a gym as wood passes sound and is annoying. Laminate is a floor covering made out of plywood though it looks like hard wood. Laminate is a plastic covering done over the plywood. Laminate is durable than hard wood. The drawback with laminate is that it can not get a wooden finish like normal wooden flooring. Bamboo flooring is made out of bamboo and belongs to the hard wood flooring. Bamboo flooring is environmental friendly, durable and available in various colors, textures and patterns. Likewise, flooring done from oak tree is known as Cork flooring. Cork flooring is environmental friendly and does not impact nature as trees are not cut down completely. Cork oak tree bark is stripped on regular basis every nine to ten years instead of chopping the tree. This does not damage the nature and thus, hundred percent eco friendly.

Our Economic Crunch, Does It Hurt You

This is one of the hardest articles I have ever written. As I write there are so many different thoughts racing through my mind that is almost impossible to concentrate on a single subject. There are so many things to talk about when it comes to our economic structure.

Please keep in mind, these are only the thoughts and opinions of an old fool. Not those of the rich or the government officials.

What I want to know is simply who is affected by the economic crunch we face today. The word is that it affects everybody. Well, I guess that is true, but lets face it, it is mostly the lower income people who suffer.

It is people like you and me. The people who are not wealthy. The people who go to their place of employment every day not knowing if it will even exist in the morning. The people who work hard to feed their family and still give graciously to the tax man.

Do not get me wrong, I realize everyone has a problem with business as usual, but it is the little guy that hurts most.

Right now the increase in the cost of gas is the big culprit. The cost of fuel has caused more problems for more people than anything else ever has.

It seems the only ones not too concerned with the fuel costs is those in government. But then again, they are among the wealthy. There is not one government official who is not a multi-millionaire. Is not it sad when those who supposedly work for us make so much more money than we do.

If any one of the officials actually had to drive their own car (paid for by them) to the gas pump and had to get out of the car and put a pump in their hand to fill their own tank and then actually pull out their own money or credit card (billed to them) to pay for it they might just feel the anger we all feel. They might then wonder how they are going to afford gas and still put food on the table.

However, thats not going to happen. They have someone else drive a government car (paid for by our taxes) (again, supplied by us) to a special pump for a fill up and it is all paid for by the people who pay their taxes.

The cost of fuel has affected the cost of transportation which in turn affects the cost of food. It also causes a need for the farmer and the rancher to charge more for their product. It has absolutely no positive affect on our paychecks.

Do you realize what an impound it would have if all the truckers stopped turning their wheels because they could not afford fuel. Without the truckers delivering the goods our world would actually shut down. It would be devastation worse than Osama Bin Laden caused with the Twin Towers.

If the truckers were forced to shut down we would be playing right into the hands of Osama. Our country could then easily be crushed.

The cost of everything is going up but there is no way that the employer can afford to raise the average wage. So the cost of living is on a fast train headed for oblivion and the worker is destined to failure.

I would like to find a way for average Mr. America to fight back. A way that I can become involved in a solution. A way that can return peace and harmony to a losing situation.

I'm not talking about going GREEN. Going green is a good thing, but it is for the protection of the world, not the people in it. I am talking about a way to help protect the American public from a pure disaster.

I'm also not talking about things like not buying gas on any particular day. Or boycotting any specific item for a period of time. Those ideas have been around for a long time and have no way of doing any good.

We need to put our heads together and find a way to survive and return to yesterday. If anyone has any good ideas, count me in.

Maybe we need to work on a way for some of the money to leave the pockets of our politicians. Perhaps if they, too, feel the pain they may decide to fight for what is right and not just more for them.

I know my thoughts and opinions are not the solution and some probably think I should just shut up but some of the worlds best products and answers came from a little non-sinsical banter. Give me your thoughts. Leave your comment

Lean Six Sigma and Inventory Management

This comes from the fact that whenever an order is received the goods can be dispatched without delay. But this often gives rise to a scenario of piling up of inventory, unless good sales are achieved – or the stock becomes outdated.

There are projects undertaken to improve this situation, but often end up giving short-term results. The better solution is implementing Lean tools to reduce excess and obsolete inventory.

Lean Six Sigma can be highly effective in bringing down huge losses suffered due to excess and obsolete inventory.

Analyzing Root Causes

The first step is to undertake the analysis of excess and obsolete inventory that an organization has. The DMAIC methodology can be very useful in bringing the overall improvement in the inventory scenario.

Often, the root causes of this results from long lead times, poor forecasting and quality issues. Further analysis will show that there are smaller reasons linked with each other that lead to the problems.

For example, large lead times may be caused due to larger lot sizes. Even if the order cycle time is of 30 days, if the lot size for purchase is 90 days, then this gives rise to a huge amount of inventory. Though this may not be the only reason, it can be a major reason along with the cause being one of complicated processes.

There could be other reasons that lead to obsolete stock. If lead time is great and there happens to be some rework needed, then the by time the stock is ready the utility of the stock may be reduced.

For example, in a pharmaceutical company, if such large lead times exist, then the stock could be obsolete if the product has expired or is not very far off from doing so.

In such a situation, the customer may reject the product.

Dealing with Poor Demand, Supply, and Forecasting

Another root cause may be due to poor management of the demand and supply process. If there is poor forecasting, or inaccuracy of data on the demand side and over-projecting sales on the part of the sales team, then inventory levels can be overwhelming.

Rework caused due to defects is another major factor that leads to obsolete inventory as well as the increase in the lead times. Lean Six Sigma tools can be used very carefully in dealing with this situation.

The phases of DMAIC allow for defining the project goals, plan the data collection in the measure phase, and carrying out a physical count in the Measure phase. This helps in understanding the value of the stock better than the book value. Value stream mapping in the Analyze phase helps in understanding how the input variables are affecting the inventory levels.

It can form the basis for an inventory model. Other areas are also identified where the inventory is built up unnecessarily. Lean tools like 5S can be very useful in sorting out such a situation. Other improvement areas are also identified.

The Control phase can be an ongoing one, which can ensure sustained improvements.

Lean can prove to be highly useful in addressing the issues of excess and obsolete inventory using tools and techniques to identify root causes and designing Lean solutions to streamline the process.

How To Treat Acne Scars

Adolescence is the time our body undergoes many hormonal changes. And mainly it is the result of puberty. Almost by the age of 12-14 both male and female human beings attain puberty and the problem of this acne starts here.

Acne is almost a skin problem, which occurs due to the unhygienic skin habits. Human skin has pores called hair follicles. Acne occurs due to the clogging of these follicles with unwanted stuff. Our body results in dead cells as an end product of the metabolic activities. These dead cells get accumulated in the pores. Our skin has oil-producing glands called sebaceous glands, which secretes oil. Dead cells along with this oil become an unhygienic environment for the bacterial and fungal infections.

Some main reason for acne problems is uncontrolled food habits, lack of nutrients and hygiene. Mainly zinc and vitamin contents should be rich in the food we consume. Do not consume oily foods as this indirectly results in more secretion of oil by sebaceous glands. Do not take over spicy foods as they result in your hormonal imbalance and may end up on acne.

Real Estate Deposit vs Down Payment

When you’re selling your home, you have to be familiar with related real-estate lingo. You have to know the difference between a canopy and an awning; a mortgage and a loan; and most importantly, the difference between a deposit and a down payment.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of home sellers who think that deposits and down payments are one and the same, when in reality they are not.

A deposit is the money given or handed over to the owner when a buyer indicates a sincere desire to purchase the property being sold. It is a token amount that could be as small as a few hundred dollars, or as big as 5% of the total purchase price. The deposit can be returned when the transaction does not fall through for reasons beyond the control of the buyer, and can also be forfeited in favour of the seller. When the purchase pushes through, the deposit is credited to the buyer and forms part of his down payment.

A down payment or equity, on the other hand, can be considered as an initial payment on the property itself. It is given when the buyer has decided to actually purchase the house (unlike in deposit, where it is given when the buyer indicates a desire to buy the unit). The down payment is the total amount of money a buyer can give as a partial payment and is generally of a bigger value (10% of the total property cost, or more) than regular deposits.

It’s fairly easy to differentiate. Just remember that a deposit is smaller and, once the transaction pushes through, becomes part of the down payment. The total of these two, plus any outstanding balance, should be the agreed upon purchase price of the property.

Hopscotch Stencils – Sidewalk Delights

The game of hopscotch is a sidewalk and playground staple that has endured for centuries to become one of the widest-played court games in the world today. Equal parts throwing precision and physical dexterity, what is on paper a numbingly simple game is actually a demanding test of stamina and skill. It is perhaps because of its deceptive simplicity that hopscotch remains such a popular children’s game. Indeed, its uniquely-shaped court, which can actually vary depending on where it is played and the preferences of the players, is instantly recognizable as such.

In some locations, permanent hopscotch courts exist, practically engraved into stone and concrete to provide a ready-made game or three to any groups of children who are inclined to take advantage of it. Other times, children or their elders take a piece of street chalk and scrawl a court into existence on the sidewalk or playground. Often, this approach produces uneven hopscotch courts that deteriorate quickly as excited boys and girls stomp on its lines. Since it isn’t really worth anyone’s time to actually fashion a sidewalk into a permanent court, there is an acceptable halfway alternative: painting the court on the pavement using a hopscotch stencil. Just as stencils in general facilitate the painting of smooth, sharp and professional-looking lines, a hopscotch stencil ensures that the court that you generate looks snazzy enough that even adults will stop and consider playing.

Hopscotch stencil designs range from the standard schoolyard court to new-fangled styles that have alternating squares in a checker pattern, or courts that are shaped like animals, such as fish. Whichever design you select is really a matter of personal preference. If you are a purist, just go for the traditional hopscotch arrangement. However, if you would like to demonstrate a bit of variant creativity, the hopscotch court that has a crocodile design may be a more satisfying buy. In all cases, make sure your stencil is made of decent quality grade plastic, so that it will afford you and your children, and their playmates, an indefinite number of fun hours through repeated use.

To paint a hopscotch stencil properly, first pick a stretch of straight, flat sidewalk pavement, taking care to minimize cracks or lines that may disrupt the court’s integrity. Once you have found a suitable area, start sweeping up the place, clearing it of dirt, stones and other debris. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself painting on dust and rocks. Then, lay the hopscotch stencil out flat, and secure it to the pavement with some masking tape or similar adhesive. Afterwards, spray the pavement paint or brush it onto the stencil, taking care to apply the paint coat evenly. Lastly, find something else to do for about an hour, like take the kids for ice cream or the corner store to buy some goodies. When you return, the paint will have dried, and your children can jump straight into the action, literally, when you remove the stencil.

A good hopscotch stencil is a great way to bring fun and excitement to a boring sidewalk. It would be prudent to have one on hand to encourage your kids to seek play outdoors.

The Importance of the Abutment – Dental Abutments Uncovered

Do you know the various components which will contribute to your new smile? Dental Implants are never just implanted alone and include other important components, namely the dental prosthesis (artificial tooth) and the dental abutment. The dental abutment is by far the most important element in dental implant surgery. So exactly what is a dental abutment? This article will give you some more information about the abutment and let you in on why they are so crucial to the dental implant procedure.

What does the dental abutment do?

The term dental implant is often loosely used to describe the fitting of a whole new functioning tooth into the mouth but the actual term ‘dental implant’ technically only relates to the Titanium screw inserted into the jaw. The dental abutment is the component which connects the prosthesis to the implant. From a functional perspective it is the abutment which transfers the load from the teeth to the dental implant itself thus making the choice of material for this component extremely crucial.

At what stage is the abutment fitted?

There are two ways in which the abutment can be fitted:

1) With the implant.

The abutment can be fitted at the same time as the implant however this method is not so widely used.

2) After the implant has healed.

It is more common for your dentist to wait to fit the abutment once your implant has healed this method heals a lot faster than the first. Once your implant has healed your dentist will make an incision and insert the abutment into the implant. Often healing abutments or healing cuffs are used to help the site around the implant heal better before a final abutment is inserted.

How long does the abutment take to heal?

You can expect your dental abutment to take anything from 4-6 weeks to fully heal. This process can vary depending on patient’s lifestyle and operator skill.

What are the best dental abutment materials available on the market today?

There is no ‘best’ material for dental abutments – gold, ceramic and titanium are all potential abutment materials. The final choice will depend on what you as a patient require and also the type of prosthesis material you are opting for. Titanium has excellent healing properties, where as gold is often used for porcelain crowns because it lends to a far more natural colour with this material. Ceramics have the benefit of allowing light to pass through thus giving them overall the most natural colour. If you are unsure about which abutment material to go for be sure to sit with your dental practitioner and discuss your options before making any decision

Assembly of Aluminum Carport Kits

In most cases, aluminum carport kits come with specific assembly instructions. A manufacturer will typically include written instructions that you should follow to completely. Some companies even include a video that will show you the steps as a professional installation team follows the process. The shelter in the video may not be the exact same shelter that you have purchased but it should give you a good idea of what is to come. The internet is also has many videos of professional as well as other customers as they go through the process.

If you are in the process of assembling your first carport and happen to have run into trouble, the best place to get help is directly from the manufacturer. Most manufacturing companies have trained staff that can help you right over the phone. Some companies have installation teams that can also help if you live locally. You can also consult with a local contractor if you have no other choice. A local contractor should have some experience in carport erecting or be able to at least give you some advice.

There a few things you can do to avoid assembly problems. The most important step is to begin with a flat and level surface. You can not expect a shelter to come out level if the surface below is not level to begin with. The second and equally as important thing to do is to always follow the directions carefully and never skip a step or leave a piece out of the assembly.

Aluminum carport kits should be assembled in the same fashion as a piece of furniture or a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece is equally important and if a piece is missing or left out, the result will not be the same. There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding more of something. For instance, if you feel that a carport needs more anchors, then by all means, add a few more anchors here and there until you are satisfied with the result.

What Are the Different Kinds of Weighted Keys on Digital Pianos?

You may have decided to purchase a digital piano instead of an acoustic piano for many reasons, such as availability of multiple tones, headphone playing capability, lower price, etc. But before you get one, make sure you like the feel of the keyboard action. This is how the keys feel when being played. It all has to do with what kind of weighted keys the keyboard uses.

If you want the feel of an acoustic piano, you will want a weighted keyboard. Many digital pianos will emulate the feel of an acoustic piano by using keyboard weighted keys. They can do this in multiple ways. Before we look at some of the different keyboard weighted types, let's get a quick understanding of how an acoustic piano gets its "feel"

An acoustic piano uses a hammer striking mechanism. When you press the keyboard keys it presses a lever. The lever causes a hammer to strike the strings. The hammer then bounces off the string. The key returns to the resting position by the weight of the hammer and levers. It's very natural feeling with no springs. It just uses the weight of the hammer and the momentum from bouncing off the string.

This type of feel is what digital pianos try to recreate. So let's look at the three types of keyboard actions.

Non-Weighted Keys

Non-weighted keys are very light feeling. They are what organs and synthesizers use. Obviously, they do not have the heavy, weighted feel that you get from an acoustic piano. Since there is little weight and no hammers using momentum from bouncing off a string, these non-weighted keyboards must use springs to bring the keys back to the resting position. The upside to this is that the keys are easier to press allowing quick movement over the keyboard. The downside is this feels nothing like an acoustic piano. Also, when keys so easily press down it is easier for your finger to barely graze a key that you had no intention of playing, making a noticeable mistake in your performance.

Weighted Keys

These keys have a weight in them to give them some substance. The weight makes them harder to press down, just like you'd expect on an acoustic piano. They come close to feeling like an acoustic piano. However, they do not have any type of hammer mechanism in them, so in that aspect they will not feel like an acoustic piano. The good news is that for a cheaper price this type of weighted keyboard comes close to approximating the feel of an acoustic piano. The bad news is that you will always be lacking that "momentum" feel on the keys of an acoustic when the momentum of the hammer bouncing off the string plays a part in bringing the keys back to a resting position.

Weighted Hammer Action Keys

These types of weighted keys come the closest to emulating the feel of an acoustic piano. Keyboards with this feature use a hammer simulating mechanism to give you the feel of a moving hammer. Some digital pianos even use actual hammers, not just a simulating mechanism. The big one that comes to mind is Kawai's AHAIV keyboard action. With these weighted keys you not only get the weight and resistance on the keys, but you also get the feel of a hammer's momentum. Both features you get on an acoustic piano keyboard.

Other Keyboard Descriptions

Before you buy a digital piano, you will come across other phrases that describe the keyboard action. The most common one will be Weighted Scaled Hammer Action. So what does the word "Scaled" mean? It means that the keys emulate the feel of an acoustic grand piano by being heavier on the lower notes and lighter on the higher notes.

On an acoustic grand piano, the lower notes are a little harder to press than the higher notes. So to emulate that feel, digital piano manufacturers will make their lower notes heavier. Other phrases you will see that describe this same thing are "Graded Hammer Action" and "Progressive Hammer Action." Also, look for the phrase "weight gradation" to indicate keys are heavier in the lower end and lighter in the high end.

Each manufacturer of digital pianos seeks to make their keyboard feel as close to an acoustic piano as possible. They will each do it in a different way based on their technologies and patents. Every piano player will have their opinion about which digital piano feels "the best." If you want the feel of an acoustic piano you now know to narrow your list of digital pianos to those with weighted hammer action. But the only way to find out if you like the feel of a particular digital piano is to play it.

How to Install Your Wall Or Floor Mosaic

You have gone through the process of creating your mosaic. You are very happy with the outcome but now comes the part of the process that will display it to the world! It is actually the most rewarding part of the whole process.

Preparing your base

After spending ten to thirty hours to create your mosaic, depending on its size, you want to make sure that it will withstand traffic and the possible elements to which it will be exposed.

You will need to have the right base, the foundation that will keep your mosaic intact. The base is the same as if you would install any ceramic, which is a total of at least one inch of plywood. Most floors are built using 5/8 inch plywood. To this base you will need to add an extra 3/8 or 1/2 inch plywood. This extra layer of plywood must be glued and then secured with screws every 6 inches.

For wall mosaics you can glue directly onto the wall if it is built using at least 2 by 4 studs minimum of 16 inches apart center to center.

Gluing your mosaic

Selecting the right adhesive is also a very important step. If you created mosaic wall art then you would use a wall adhesive which is much easier to work with then a mortar adhesive. This product comes premixed and bonds quickly, so your mosaic will not slide down the wall once installed.

For a mosaic tile floor I do not take any chances and use an acrylic latex admixture instead of water to my dry-set mortar. This will give it extra bond strength, especially when using impervious or vitreous ceramic tiles and most difficult to bond to tiles such as glass tiles, porcelain or polished-back granite or mosaic marble tile.

Grouting your mosaic

Grouting your mosaic is the next step. Selecting the perfect color is also very important. A dark color will bring out the pieces much more whereas a lighter color gives a more even look.

Make sure you allow enough time for your mortar to dry before applying your grout. Usually 24 to 48 hours is the recommended time. During this time do not disturb or walk over the tiles.

Once your mosaic has set you might have mosaic pieces that came unglued, do not worry, this generally happens to one or two pieces in each mosaic. You can either glue it back or leave it there and the grout will act as a second adhesive and hold the piece firmly in place. What I usually do is after 24 hrs I touch every piece in my mosaic to see if I have loose ones, then I glue them and the next day I apply the grout.

Sealing your mosaic

The last step is sealing your tiles. Seven to fourteen days after applying your grout you should seal it with the appropriate grout and tile sealer. However if you use natural tile such as marble or limestone you must give a first coat of sealer before applying your grout, this will prevent the grout from sticking to your tile while grouting.

There are many different types of sealers, depending on the materials used in your mosaics. It is a very important step that many people do not bother with, but the sealer will not only protect put it will help bring out the color of your mosaic.

Now that you have finished your mosaic you can admire it for years to come!
