o Lifting capacity and power consumption needs

o Space available in the residence for the equipment

o Whether it is to be used by just one person or more

o Whether you need a lockable equipment

o Presence of safety features such as emergency stop buttons, cable safety devices, door interlocks, and alarms.

o The number of floors the system would have to move through

It is important to purchase the residential lifts and elevators from trustworthy manufacturers to ensure that they are safe and efficient.

So Many Kinds to Choose From

Residential lifts and elevators are space savers and come in several loading configurations and sizes to suit various construction requirements. They are available in an extensive range of designs, colors, speed ranges and finishes.

Residential elevators of different types are available to suit different budgetary requirements. These include roped hydraulic drive, winding drum drive, vacuum drive and pitless models. It is preferable to get an accessibility device installed when the residence is under construction rather than several years after it is built, to avoid inconvenience and get them at economical rates.

Disposable Plates

Plates are those dish items that we use when serving food. They are concave and flat and they are made from solid materials like plastic, glass, paper and ceramics like porcelain, bone china and stoneware. They are classified according to the food items that are served on them. Soup bowls, cereal bowls, bread dishes, dessert bowls, salad, cake, platters and saucers are for their own specified uses.

Sometimes we find that we are called upon to host large number of guests. The idea of lining up the sink with dirty utensils that will require washing after the party does not go down well with many people. Many companies, having known this, have come up with disposable plates which save you the agony of dish washing. They are common with the takeaway fast food joints that wrap food for their customer who wish to take it away.

These items make catering services more convenient and they ensure that proper food standards are maintained. It goes beyond the food quality to issues of environment. They are made from easily recyclable materials and they come together with plastic knives, forks and spoons. This is an economical way of saving on the extra cost of acquiring these items.

Since most disposable plates are made of paper, they are usually waxed or covered in a waterproof material that prevents leaking. You therefore need not worry that your dish item will come out in pieces due to the sogginess of the food. You can order them on or offline, but if you need the best quality, buy them in person.

Things to Consider When Buying Coal Stoves

Coal stoves are a truly effective way of heating a home, however before you run out and buy one for your own home there are certain factors that need to be taken into consideration first. It is crucial that you know what these factors are as this will help you to determine just which is the right one for your home.

Firstly, you need to assess whether you have the space available to have a chimney installed on your property if you currently do not have one. Albeit some coal stoves today have their own metal chimneys which can be attached to an outside wall, you need to find out whether planning permission is required to install such an item first. The easiest way to find this out is by contacting your local authority and see what regulations they have with regards to the installation of brick or metal chimneys to a property that currently does not have one.

If you actually do have a chimney already at your home it is important that before you get any kind of coal stove installed you have it thoroughly inspected. There are plenty of company’s who will carry out such inspections and provide you with details of any problems and what needs to be done to rectify them. Also arrange at the same time to have the chimney thoroughly cleaned.

A chimney is essential as this is what helps to vent the stove and so prevent toxic fumes from having access to your home. So even once installed you will need to make sure that it is regularly maintained. To prevent the build up of soot in your chimney it is important that you arrange to have it inspected and cleaned every six months to a year depending on how much it is used. Certainly those that are being used continuously should be cleaned every six months.

After the chimney issues the next thing you have to take into consideration when buying coal stoves is what size you want. The size you select will depend upon what size of home you have and just how many rooms you intend to heat using it.

After taking the above factors into consideration and you have selected your coal stove you now need to get it installed. It is best if you use a company who has plenty of experience in the installation of such equipment and not just the stove but also the other bits and pieces such as the chimney parts. Hopefully the store where you purchase your coal stove from will be able to recommend a company that can carry out these works for you.

It is vital that after your coal stove has been installed that you regularly check it over before it is lit. Over time just by looking at your coal stove you will be able to quickly identify any seals, grates or glass that needs to be replaced because they have become worn or damaged. This is especially crucial if you only have yours lit during the winter months.

Coal stoves as mentioned are a great way of ensuring that your home remains warm throughout the winter months. However, if you really want yours to be truly effective you need to make sure that you take care of it properly and that you use the best kind of fuel possible.

Cooking With Electric Cookers

Society has produced a generation of very busy men and women who hardly have the time to relax, let alone create a healthy meal for dinner. Many of these men and women have children who suffer because of it. Eating fast food and food from restaurants contributes to obesity and heart disease, but there is an alternative. Electric cookers are a tremendous time saver when it comes to cooking dinner.

There are many types of electric cookers such as rice cookers, slow cookers, and steamers. Many of these are combined into one machine so that a whole meal can be created in one or two electric cookers. Rice cookers come with timers that can be set to have the rice start cooking an hour before you get home so that the rice is done when the family is ready to eat. Many rice cookers come with a rack to put above the rice, which holds vegetables to be steamed.

Slow cookers are also amazing electric cookers that can be filled with almost anything before you leave for work. Set it on low for 8-10 hours and return home to the aroma of a healthy dinner. If you are too rushed in the morning to prepare anything, you can do it the night before. Season some meat and vegetables and put them in the slow cooker bowl. Take the bowl out of the electric cooker and place it in the fridge. Remember to take the bowl out in the morning, put it back in the electric slow cooker, and press the button.

How To Make Clear Boat Panels

It is extraordinary to look back over the years and see exactly how much boat windows have increased in price. On my own boat I made all the frames out of plywood and Lexan but there are some areas that could always do with some more light and I am sure that always applies to most boats. I had a look at some of those glass and metal prisms the other day in an antique parts dealer and nearly fell over when I saw them priced at nearly two hundred dollars each!

RESINS

One of the major problems with moulding clear panels in Australia is the difficulty of dealing with Ultra Violet discoloration in resins. To overcome this we have to use resins and hardeners with a resistance to U.V. degradation. This is done by substituting some of the styrene content with methyl methacrylate. This is referred to as a methacrylate Resin or light stabilised resin. Before attempting any part of this project clear the details with your resin supplier who will be sure to put you on the right track with brand names and materials. The resin used matches as near possible to the refractive qualities of the glass.

USING THE RIGHT GLASS.

The glass side of things can be taken care of by using powder-bonded chopped strand glass mat but emulsion-bond mat can also be used for translucent panels. The actual technique for producing flat clear panels is not as difficult as you might think but a few criteria are needed. First, cleanliness is essential, a level surface/i.e. table, solid bench to work on, dead level, not partly!

WHAT DO WE NEED?

Ø A smooth shiny flat surface i.e. glass, new hardboard panels (shiny side up) 6 inches bigger than the required panel, two off.

Ø Glass mat 1.5 oz (450 g/m2) for medium panels, a single piece of 2 ounce (600 g/m2) can be used. For a larger heavier panel, two pieces of 1.5 ounce (450 g/m2) can be used.

Ø Some new cellophane or polythene sheet.

Ø Polyester methacrylate Resin/light stabilised resin and catalyst.

Ø Glass roller and normal roller (no fluff, good quality).

COLOURED TRANSLUCENT SHEETS.

If you want your panel to be coloured or tinted, you must mix up the pigment into your resin before application. The only stuff to use is translucent colour paste. Opaque colour paste pigments must not be used.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Ø Lay out your base plate (shiny surface up).

Ø Lay out first sheet of cellophane (or polythene) taping flat, clear of wrinkles.

Ø Cut your required glass panel size from glassfibre mat (ensure mat is smaller than base surfaces).

Ø Mix up your resin (with or without translucent colour paste).

Ø Apply generous amount of resin with a hair free brush. Work out all air bubbles.

Ø Apply second sheet of cellophane (or polythene) on top of glass mat and resin.

Ø Taking time, roll out all the bubbles.

Ø Take second sheet of shiny hardboard or glass (safety glass please) lay on top of second sheet of cellophane (or polythene) making a ‘sandwich’.

Ø Roller carefully all over

Ø Allow glass to cure and harden

Ø Peel off cellophane (or polythene) off the cured panel.

Ø The panel can then be cut square or shaped with a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade (fine toothed, slow speed) after full curing.

USES AND APPLICATIONS!

These lightweight, tough and virtually unbreakable clear panels are great for areas where safety is paramount. A garden shed is only one application, hatches or light panels on boats is another. Coloured panels can be made for ‘stained glass affects’ using translucent colours and are pleasant on boats. Other uses are heat resistant tabletops and mats and really the applications here are limited only by your own imagination. Hang on, I have just thought of another….shower screens! I’m sure with enough thought more will spring to mind!

TEXTURED SURFACES

It follows of course that surface textures may also spring to mind. You can incorporate already textured plastic panels as your original moulds, provided the textures allow faithful reproduction through the cellophane (or polythene). You can even make several panels of different coloured pigments, cut out shapes and by the adhesive lead moulding to make a very attractive non-glass lead lighting panels for internal cupboards. Experimentation is recommended here and no results guaranteed!

Why Choose Amtico Wood Flooring?

Amtico flooring is just about the most hardwearing and practical alternative to real wood.

There is a huge choice available in the latest natural wood designs. These range from the softest grains such as white maple, to the mid toned classic oaks, and on to the darkest colour in the range called Wenge Wood.

All Amtico woods are genuine British made commercial grade (not the Asian made Spacia or Karndean) and are available in 'tick' finish in the optimum 114mm x 915mm standard size.

Choosing an Amtico floor means you will not have to worry about long term maintenance- your floor will never need sanding or re-finishing. The tough hardwearing surface will repel stains and moisture making it an ideal choice for wet areas such as bathrooms and shower rooms, and heavy wear areas even hallways and entrance lobbies.

Amtico wood authentically replicates the natural product and it's true characteristics. The Stripwood is highly variable in grain and decoration. Please consider this in your product choice as online images only display a small section of the material.

Installing Amtico wood flooring can be undertaken by any reasonably competent DIYer with little in the way of equipment. If you are laying onto an existing wood floorboard, chipboard, or MDF sub-floor, it is always good practice to install a new plywood base first. Not only will this ensures long term wear, it will also prevent undulations showing through your new flooring.

If your sub-floor is reasonably flat, 6mm exterior grade moisture resistant plywood is adequate. This should be fixed at 15-20cm centers with screw nails. If your sub-floor is old and extremely uneven, a heavier grade plywood 9mm or 12mm should be used. However before installing this, level off any hollows with a latex screed compound. Otherwise the plywood will never be completely flat.

After fixing down the plywood, spend as much time as possible filling any gaps in the joints, and knocking down nails flat. Then take down any high spots with a medium grade sand paper. More Time taken on preparing the sub-floor will produce huge dividends when you have installed you new Amtico, so do not be tempted to cut any corners.

Depending on how flat and smooth you have managed to make the plywood base, it may be necessary to apply a further leveler such as Ardex "Feather Finish" which can be applied thinly without the risk of de-bonding

When you are installing over a solid floor eg concrete, asphalt, quarry tiles, stone flags etc. it is imperative that your do a thorough check of the moisture content of the sub-floor. Even a small amount of moisture in a sub-floor will cause Amtico flooring to start lifting within a very short period of time. Your investment will then be wasted, as the floor will be beyond repair.

Check first for the presence of a dpm, which should be visible on your outside, walls maybe the first or second line of brick or stone. If there is none evident, and your house was built before 1960, then it is wise to assume that there is no damp proof membrane in the sub-floor.

Your only option then is to apply a surface dpm to the sub-floor. These are a 2-part epoxy resin coating. These are easy to apply, but can take up to 48 hours to cure. The most widely used product is ES3000 made by Treetabond.

Once you have a dry clean solid sub-floor, a leveling screed should be applied Always follow the screed manufacturers instructions with regard to the use of priming or bonding agents. Remember that if the screed de-bonds from the sub-floor, your new Amtico floor will also fail.

The screed should be rubbed down as smooth as possible before installing your Amtico flooring. Visible trowel marks, high or low spots will soon become evident once you have a new shiny floor fitted over the screed. Therefore more time and effort spent on the preparations will be rewarded with a superior final floor finish.

The Amtico flooring should always be installed using the approved Amtico adhesive. For wet areas the Amtico 'Universal' adhesive should always be used. Amtico flooring can be laid onto underfloor heating, provided that Amtico HT (high temperature) adhesive is used. For all other areas, the standard Amtico SF (solvent free) adhesive can be used without problems.

As withany, Amtico flooring will benefit from regular maintenance. The Amtico floor dressing will give enhanced protection fromwet and abrasion. The Amtico Cleaner will effectively clean your floor without removing the Dressing. However, when the time comes to renew the dressing,

Amtico Dressing Remover is a powerful and aggressive stripper, which makes light work of removing heavy build-ups of old layers of floor dressing. Guidance on maintenance is available from the Amtico flooring website.

Plan, Pack and Go – A Family Vacation on Florida's West Coast

Family vacations are a wonderful source of memories and tradition. While there are many exotic and beautiful destination choices, our family's favorite vacation spot is on the West Coast of Florida. For over 25 years we have made it a point to spend time on the sand bar beach strip just south of Clearwater Beach, Florida in Belleair Beach. We rent a three bedroom condo that is right on the beach. Renting a private condo allows us to save hundreds of dollars as it is less expensive than a hotel and we have all the amenities of home. We save even more money by stocking up at the local grocery so everyone can make their own breakfast and lunch. Best of all, we walk out the door and have our choice: a beautiful pool or the Gulf of Mexico. What more could you ask for?

This narrow strip of paradise sits with the Gulf on one side and the bay and intercoastal waterways on the other. This barrier island runs from Clearwater down to St. Petersburg. There all kinds of accommodations available from high rises and hotels to smaller condo complexes or beach cottages. There is something to fit any budget. It is quiet and uncrowded but yet close to lots of activities!

When we want a break from the beach the possibilities are numerous. A 45 minute drive to Tampa and we are at Busch Gardens for a day of fun. If we want to attack the Orlando scene we get up early and make the 90 minute drive. We can spend the day at any of the Disney, Universal or Sea World theme parks and be back at the beach by 10pm.

If we want to stay local, we head 5 minutes up Gulf Boulevard to Clearwater Beach for shopping or water fun. Centrally located in the beautiful harbor, there are boat rides, fishing charters, pirate ships, dinner cruises and even parasailing for the more adventurous. Prices are much more reasonable than in some of the larger, more commercial beach cities in Florida.

Perhaps our favorite tradition is our night at the Clearwater Phillies minor league ball field. Located about 15 minutes from the beach, their stadium is beautiful, clean and family friendly. Tickets are under $ 10 and the food courts are well stocked with the traditional ball field goodies at bargain prices. You sit close to the field and have a great chance to catch a fly ball! Players sign programs and balls for the kids. They have numerous special events throughout the season including fireworks! It has been a part of every vacation for over 20 years. Of course, you can venture into Tampa and see the Tampa Yanks play at the famous Legends Field.

While we eat home for breakfast and lunch, we explore the local cuisine at dinnertime! Always budget conscious with our big crowd, we seek out the family style restaurants. Our two favorites are in Indian Rocks Beach. Crabby Bills has to be the best seafood restaurant in the state. It casual and fun and family style. Long picnic tables covered with red and white table clothes set the ambiance. Nothing fancy but a party like atmosphere prevails. Beer and soda by the pitcher, fresh seafood on paper plates with great side like coleslaw, fries and hush puppies. It is the perfect family seafood restaurant. Stop into their fun gift shop on the way out!

The second family favorite is an Italian bistro, also in Indian Rocks, TJ's Italian Café. Casual with delicious home made Italian food. The pizza and strombolis are a must! It is an easy place to bring the kids no matter their age! After dinner hop next door to TJ "s Mom's Homemade Ice Cream Parlor for dessert!

What would a family vacation be without a round of miniature golf? Travel another 5 minutes south and you will see Smuggler Cove Adventure Golf right on Gulf Boulevard. Three courses with lots of "pirate theme" holes including waterfalls and an alligator pond.

Family vacations are a great part of establishing family traditions. While our kids are all older from 20-26, we still ALL look forward to our family vacation. We start in later winter, pick some dates and everyone works their vacation schedule. They are welcome to bring along their significant other or a friend. Planning early allows for use of airline miles and assures lower fares. So this August there will 10 of us making memories at our favorite vacation spot in Florida. It will truly be a fantastic family celebration!

All Time Favorites – Iron Railings

Iron railing has been in vogue for the last many centuries and has not gone out of fashion even then. The popularity is due to long life. Read al about iron railings in the article.

Traditional Yet Modern – Iron Railings

Iron railings have been used since the start of industrial revolution in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. At that time, the metallurgy was still an art and not an exact science as it is today. Being the work of art, it was costly to have iron railings and only the rich could afford the wrought iron and cast iron railings. The technique of welding was non-existent and metal joining was only be heating and hammering together or riveting.

The iron railings may be classified as wrought iron railings, cast iron railings or the steel railings. Stainless steel railings were non-existent in seventeenth century.

Now after the fashion has gone through many iterations the iron railings have never got out of fashion since the life of the iron railings is more than the life cycle of fashions. Iron railings will never go out of fashion any time.

The metal used in railings was primarily iron although the rich and the kings used other metals including gold for railings inside the houses.

Metal Used In Iron Railings

Wrought Iron railings: Wrought iron railings were made be a laborious process of heating the pieces of iron to red-hot heat and hammering out the pieces of the railings to the required shape and size. The work was labor intensive and only those artistic tendencies and the ability to work hard were able to make the wrought iron railings. Since the artists are never hard workers, and vice versa, the supply was limited, and hence the prices were very high.

Cast iron railings: The cast iron railings were made by melting the iron and casting the hot iron into molds. The molds were made from sand and used for making cast iron railings. The railings were fragile and if one breaks, it was virtually impossible at that time to repair the broken railing. It had to be handled with care and not many would go for the cast iron railing except the rich persons.

Mild steel railings: The mild steel made its appearance some where in the eighteenth century and was immediately popular material for fencing and railing. The pieces could be cold worked and joined by riveting. The cold working was the major advantage and this increased its use for everything including the used for railings.

Advances in Iron Railings

Advances in welding technology changes the way we used iron for railings. Now it was possible to bend the iron rods in shapes that were hitherto unimaginable and it was possible to join them with welding. The welding technology also made it possible for us to reduce the weight and cost without reducing the strength. As the iron rods were weldable, the repair also became easy

Now it is possible to make railings out of plates and bend them into shapes as required. The material remains the same old iron but now the form can be changed to make it look more attractive and maintenance free. Stainless steel is utilized for this purpose in increasing quantities, and the stainless steel looks more elegant and requires no maintenance at all (other than regular cleaning).

Thus, iron railings have given way to stainless steels and it is being increasing used for all railing related work..

The Difference Between a Hub and a Switch

December, 2002

You would not believe how many times I have been asked the question "So what exactly is the difference between a switch and a hub anyway?" Or how many times I have heard it answered "Well, switches switch and … err … a hub does not." This would leave one to believe that maybe there is not much difference at all or maybe this is just another one of those marketing strategies so that computer vendors can charge us more. Well that is not the case and there really is a difference (quite a significant one).

Hubs have been around a long time. So long in fact, that many people assume that anything that "connects all their computers together" is a hub. Well, that may not be the case. The term "hub" has become generic for any device that connects computers together. To add to the confusion, there is very little difference in their physical appearance. But on the inside, there is a world of difference.

For those techno weenies out there (like me) that have heard of the OSI model, a switch operates on Layer 2 (or above) of the OSI model and a hub operates at Layer 1. There is NO intelligence to a hub. A hub is literally as though you just meshed all of the copper wires in all the cables from the workstations into one. Everything that one workstation "hears" or transmits all of the others hear. Immediately this may not sound like such a bad idea, but it can have tremendous impact on the performance of your network, especially when you start daisy chaining the hubs together.

The difference with a switch is that once a communications session has been established between two devices (whether computers, network printers or anything else) then none of the other computers or devices can "hear" them. This drastically reduces network traffic.

Now it is necessary to point out here a very common mistake: switches DO NOT block broadcasts. If you do not know what a broadcast is, then you probably can ignore what I am saying. But a broadcast and broadcast "storms" can not be prevented with a switch (at least not Layer 2 switches).

The good news is that now the cost of a switch is not much more than a hub. In fact, some places do not even sell hubs any more.

Bottom line:

If you're small office / home network has 2-4 computers then you really have no need to upgrade. But if your network has 5+ workstations then it may be worth your investment to purchase a switch.

Now, just before you start thinking this is too simple. There is actually a very wide variety of the types of switches and their brands out there. Look for future articles describing the vendors to stay away from and the features and options you have when purchasing.

Pan For Free Gold In The Historic California Mother Lode

With the high prices of gold these days, many folks are interested in panning for gold for fun and recreation. The chances you'll strike it rich are dim, but if you will work at it, there is still gold out there to be found. Many new prospectors have a problem finding good places to prospect for gold. Many spots are either located on private property or already held as a private mining claim. As a result, many people get together and form clubs.

The prospecting clubs and acquire their own claims for the use of the members. However sometimes a new prospector would like to try his hand panning for gold at least the first few times without having to pay the money to join a prospecting club. This article describes a beautiful little spot where one can dredge, sluice, metal detect, or pan for gold, all for free. It is called Mineral Bar campground and is located where the Colfax – Iowa Hill Road crosses over the American River. In the terms of the old miners, a bar is a place where gold bearing gravel accumulates.

The North fork of the American River has been mined for its gold since the days of the 49ers. At Mineral Bar, you can get a feel for that historic time, when hearty miners struggled to win a living by working the sands and gravels of the River. The signs are all around in the form of many large piles of rocks which were left behind by the miners who worked this area. Some nice nuggets have been found here, and it is still possible to find some nice flakes without too much effort. The picture at right with the buffalo nickel shows gold flakes taken from a days panning on the North Fork of the American River and Mineral Bar. If you know how to pan for gold and know where to dig, you should be able to get a similar amount with a days worth of effort. Much of this gold is flat and flaky and has been washed down from the hydraulic mines up above at places like Iowa Hill.
Both Colfax and Iowa Hill were important towns in the gold rush days, and millions of ounces of gold were harvested from these hills in the early days. If you come to stay and try your hand prospecting at Mineral Bar, you should set aside a little bit of time to visit both Colfax and Iowa Hill and see the historic sites there. The town of Iowa Hill is practically surrounded by large old hydraulic mines, locations where miners washed down the entire hillside to capture the gold located there. It is easy to see the hydraulic mines on both sides of the road just before it enters Iowa Hill.
Because it is so dense, gold likes to work its way down to the bedrock, and it's usually in the cracks and crevices of the bedrock that you will find the most gold. If you would like to read more information on placer mining in general, and some instructions on how to pan for gold, be sure to check out my website on gold panning located here:

Getting to Mineral Bar is not too difficult – it is about 2 miles East of the little town of Colfax, northeast of Sacramento. The map below shows what you need to know to get there. Take the Iowa Hill Road which diverges from the frontage road on the east side of I-80. It intersects the frontage road roughly a quarter mile south of the Chevron gas station. The road down is paved all the way, but it is a little steep in places and there are a couple real sharp turns. The road is not advisable for larger motor homes, but I've had no problems getting there with my trailer. It's a popular camp spot and usually nearly or completely full on weekends during the summer. Arriving early on Friday or on Monday are usually best if you want to camp. Even if the camp spots are full there is still plenty of day parking for non-campers. There are limited facilities: pit toilets only and no running water other than what is in the river (and that is not safe to drink). Even so, it has good gold and is less than an hour from the Sacramento area, a perfect place to get away from it all, a quiet spot well worth the time to stop and enjoy a visit to the area. The nearest supermarket in this area, which is also the best source for food and other goods, is located behind McDonald's in Colfax.

Rope Socket

There are many types of rope socket in most common use: Knot type, teardrop type and braided type. The rope_socket is required to make connection between wireline and toolstring. The basic toolstring components are rope_ socket, knuckle joint, stem, mechanical jars, etc.

The teardrop (also called a ‘no-knot’ or ‘wedge’ type) is designed for 0.092″, 0.105″, 0.108″, 0.125″ and is designed O.D for 1-1/4″, 1-1/2″, 1-7/8″, 2-1/8″, 2-1/2″.

The standard body of teardrop has an internal taper to accept the thimble. However a thimble eye is available to convert the older style of rope socket.

The end of the wire is bent to fit the curve at the bottom of the teardrop, with the short side slightly shorter than the side of the thimble.

The groove in the thimble of this socket is not deep enough to accommodate the total thickness of the wireline. As the security of the wirelne depends upon its being pinched between the thimble and it body. Care must be taken to ensure the correct size of socket is selected for the wireline in use.

As the internal components of the teardrop rope socket do not permit the wire to rotate, it is essential to include a swivel immediately below it.

Do not substitute a knuckle joint in place of a swivel. A swivel has 11/2 degrees to 5 degrees of lateral movement, where a knuckle joint is not designed to rotate

under load and has 15 degrees of lateral movement. In the event of it being necessary to fish the rope socket, a knuckle joint will allow it to lay over against the side of the tubing wall at an angle which may make latching difficult / impossible.
