How to Select A Bladeless Trocar With High Quality Control Test

The trocar is a device used in minimal invasive surgery to access and drain collections of fluid and tissue from patient’s abdominal. While this device has historically had many uses it is currently most often used to perform laparoscopic surgery. Traditionally this device had a three points or pyramid design which carried the potential for additional patient damage during the procedure. Today, it is more common for surgeons to use a bladeless trocar to limit the potential for medical complications and enhance overall patient safety while minimizing recovery time. At a glance, every trocar may look the same however there are a few key differences and design which can make one bladeless trocar significantly safer than another.

The first feature to consider is the ability to mount a scope on the trocar. This allows operators to observe any potential damage to abdominal walls during insertion. Along with the ability to mount a scope, it is important the scope angle allows for accurate depth perception to minimize any potential for damage.

The use of a transparency sleeve has become a key feature of a bladeless trocar. The transparent sleeve structure should offer stability and convenience during operation while minimizing strain in the abdominal wall. Additionally, the sleeve should be available in a variety of length and shapes depending on the purpose of use.

Another key safety feature is a one touch release button. This allows the surgeon to separate or combine the bladeless trocar with one hand. Not only does this make it easier to take out tissue also allows the surgeon greater freedom of movement during surgery.

The final important feature of a bladeless trocar is the tip itself. A bladeless tip must have a precise design to ensure it does not need a large opening during the insertion process. If it requires a large opening that offers no significant advantage over a bladed trocar. The best bladeless tips are much more precise and safer than their steel made bladed counterparts. Not only do the flat incisions make it easier for the wound to close but can also decrease the pain a patient experiences during the recovery process.

Along with specific features and capabilities of a bladeless trocar it is important the device undergoes specific tests during the design and manufacturing phase. One important test is the resistance and durability test. This specifically focuses on the sealing part. For resistance test to provide the best results it is critical the part is tested in both the forward and reverse direction. Durability test could show how the sealing part is durable especially circle silicone part. The other important test is an air leak test. It is essential and the feature of this test both a low-pressure and high-pressure test to ensure effectiveness of sealing part’s design. To be considered safe, a bladeless trocar must include all the key design features and both tests have been conducted.

Weather Gods and Ancient Meteorology

The first meteorologists were the priests and shamans of early civilisations. They were tasked with appeasing the gods who, it was believed, controlled the climate and all natural phenomena. This was no mean feat as you can imagine, and sometimes their very lives depended upon favourable weather.

By 3500 BC Egyptian communities were well established along the Nile where the weather was warm and sunny, and water was abundant. However as this early cradle of civilisation was totally dependent on the Nile for its prosperity the Egyptians tried to use the movement of the stars as a guide to the annual rise and fall of the Nile and to the extent of its flooding.

This dependence on the Nile led to the belief in two powerful gods. Osiris and Ra (or Re). Osiris was considered the ruler of the dead and the source of fertility to the living, controlling the sprouting of vegetation and the flooding of the river Nile. Ra was the sun god who controlled the movement of heavenly bodies, travelling across the sky each day in his solar boat.

Other early civilisations emerging at that time also depended on the weather. The flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates in Mesopotamia and the Indus valley were key for the survival and prosperity of the local communities. The chief god of the Babylonians was Marduk. Marduk was originally the god of thunderstorms but eventually became the god of the atmosphere. One of the most important gods of the Vedic religion of ancient India was Indra, the god of rain and storms.

In Northern Europe the Norse god Thor, whose name originates from the Germanic word for thunder, was considered to be all powerful, and was represented carrying a hammer which symbolised a thunderbolt. People would appeal to Thor for protection and he became a symbol of Norse paganism. Over time the growing influence of Christian missionaries demonized Thor and drove his believers underground, where belief remained until modern times.

Ancient Greek mythology included many climatic controlling gods. Zeus, the ruler of the heavens, controlled the clouds, rain and thunder. The brother of Zeus was Poseidon, and he was the god of the sea and shores. And yet another brother, Hades (aka Pluto) ruled the underworld. The sun god was Helios, and wind god was Aeolus. The Greeks had a more casual approach to religion and this allowed the Greek philosophers, who sought more rational explanations for natural phenomena, to flourish.

Thales of Miletus (624-547 BC) collected records from Babylonian astronomers and successfully predicted a solar eclipse in 585BC. Empedocles (495-435 BC) theorised that all matter was composed from four elements: Fire, air, water and earth.

Although these scholars made very few significant physical discoveries their work did initiate a practice of investigation and analysis for all natural phenomena, including, of course, the climate.

The Difference Between a Pillowcase and a Pillow Sham

Question: What is the difference between a Pillowcase and a Pillow Sham?

Answer: This is a common question. The misconception is that they are one and the same. While they are both slip covers for bed pillows, they serve different purposes and are designed differently to compliment your bed linens.

Pillowcases are more functional. Meant to be slept on, they serve a san extra layer for your face while you sleep. They protect your pillow from hair and skin oil, perspiration and drool.

Pillowcases are constructed from the same fabric as a beds’ fitted or flat sheet, and normally designed to match them. They are mostly made of a plain color, sometimes with patterned trimmings.

Pillow Shams serve a more decorative purpose. Typically, they are used strictly for embellishment and not sleeping. They can add a real nice touch to a room, and serve as a perfect complement to your kid’s bedding. They are usually designed to coordinate with the kid’s comforter, quilt, coverlet, or Kid’s duvet cover.

Shams may be adorned with ornate laces, embroidery and generally display more intricate patterns than pillowcases. You can also expect pillow shams to use thicker fabrics and be more cushioned to lie atop the bedspread or comforter.

A pillow sham is a wonderful way to add some flair to a tired looking pillow and make it look special. They are usually zipped in the middle which is the insertion point for the pillow. Shams can also serve as a pillowcase, but most people avoid this because they are more costly, and are usually made from more expensive fabrics used for decorative, rather than functional, purposes.

Finally there is the Euro Sham. What is a Euro sham? it is a square pillow with an ornamental cover. It functions like a regular pillow sham, but can also be used as a throw. It denotes a cushioned pillow in German.

A Painter's Nightmare

As with many things in life, often there is a silver lining in the cloud that's raining on your parade. Many homeowners suffered loss during the 90s from having to replace the faulty Louisiana Pacific wafer board siding on their homes. While some homeowners were rewarded money for their losses some unfortunate homeowners who arrived late were rewarded noting. As frustrations rose to a deafening level during the nineties, most barely noticed the new product that was just entering the market.

During this period of time a new type of siding entered the market that offered the durability that most homeowners demanded. It was perfect timing for a cement based siding to enter the market. Many homeowners and builders rushed to buy HardiePlank to replace the decaying siding that plagued the housing industry. Finally a siding existed that would probably outlast the owner. Most folks viewed this siding as an answer to prayer.

Most painters in our industry welcomed the siding. Not having to deal with swelling siding that would not hold paint, certainly made our job easier. While most homeowners and painters were excited about this new long lasting siding, most were not aware that keeping it caulked would become the new problem that everyone would talk about. The problem was and still is: How do you keep HardiePlank caulked?

For homes that have exposure to sunlight and widely varying temperatures, keeping HardiePlank properly caulked is a challenge. HardiePlank expands and contracts a lot under these conditions. Most caulks simply do not have the elasticity to handle the expansion and contraction.

I have seen the expansion and contraction of HardiePlank siding pull fresh caulk apart within 24 hours after application. It's great siding to have on your home, but you better know what you're doing when it comes to caulking all the joints.

You certainly can not be economy minded with your purchase of caulk when HardiePlank is involved, or you will be doing the job over again. Many painters and homeowners alike seem confused when selecting caulk for this siding. It has been my experience that you should be using caulks that comply with either ASTM C 834 or ASTM C 920. Applying a caulk that falls in this category is doing so within the manufacturers written instructions.

I personally prefer using an elastomeric caulk on my customer's homes. Elastomeric caulks are made for masonry substrate surfaces. Sherwin Williams carries a product called Shermax Super Stretch Elastomeric Caulk that I find works well with HardiePlank Siding. It has the elasticity to handle the constant expanding and contracting of HardiePlank. All my crews are required to use this product and I see few problems with caulk separation. One common problem that many homeowners find is the HardiePlank itself was installed improperly. At least a 1/8 inch gap between siding and trim should be left by the installer to allow for a proper amount of caulk to be applied. The 1/8 inch gap is in accordance with caulking manufacturers written instructions. (Leave 1/8 "gap between siding, trim and butt joints so adequate caulk can be applied.) If less than 1/8 inch gap is available to apply caulk, then the caulk is too thin to handle the amount of stretching it must endure. I have seen Elastomeric Caulk separate where less than a 1/8 inch of a gap existed in the siding joints. Owens Corning also sells a very good caulk for this type application.

The last point I want to make is there are solutions to this common annoyance. As a painter it is your responsibility to deliver a product and service that will last. As a homeowner make sure you discuss your painter's plans on how he is going to solve this common problem with HardiePlank. This action will go a long way toward avoiding loss of time and money.

Anatomy of a Circuit Breaker Box

The main electrical panel, commonly referred to as a “breaker box” is the heart of your home’s electrical system. It is an essential device in the modern world, and one of the most important safety mechanisms that can be found in your house.

Your household’s electricity is sent to your home from the utility company either through overhead power lines, underground conduits, or a combination of both. After passing through your home’s electric meter, the energy is then sent to the main electrical panel to be distributed throughout the house. The main panel is your dwelling’s power distribution center, providing electricity to outlets, light fixtures, and appliances throughout the house.

Electrical service panels are manufactured in various types, sizes, and configurations. The main panel may be mounted on the exterior of the building or, alternatively and more commonly, located inside the building, providing easier access and better security.

The main panel receives electricity through 3 main incoming cables and then routes this power to many smaller wires which create circuits throughout the entire house. The average breaker panel consists of 2 main “buss bars” which control power for the entire building. The main breakers draw electricity from the incoming energy source and transfer it to these 2 main buss bars. Sequentially, these 2 buss bars pass the electricity along to all the secondary breakers. The secondary breakers each control separate aspects of the house. For example, one may control the electricity flow to a particular room of the house, such as the kitchen, while another may control the power flow to the dwelling’s air conditioning unit.

Larger beakers found in buildings with a higher capacity may divert power to sub-panels. These sub-panels will have its own set of breakers, used to control a specific aspect of the house.

A ground wire (usually copper) is always installed with the building main service panel for safety reasons. This metal wire runs from the neutral connector located within the panel, to a metal rod driven into the ground.

Every home’s main electrical panel contains a mechanical switch for each of the circuits contained within the residence. These switches allow the circuit to be purposefully broken temporarily, thereby cutting power to that aspect of the home. These are used when service or repairs must be performed to electrical aspects of the building. Also, these switches may be “tripped” automatically due to a failure in the circuit, such as a power overload. This is to prevent damage to the electrical system, as well as to the building, such as an electrical fire.

The maximum power amperage capacity for your home is printed on the main breaker. Most residences have a 100-amp capacity, which is sufficient enough for all energy needs in the household. However, some newer homes are being built with a 200-amp capacity, ensuring sufficient energy capability into the future. Some older homes may be found with a 60-amp capacity or lower. This amperage is now considered insufficient for modern household needs and these homes should have an electrical upgrade for safety reasons.

Let's Just Call a Spade a Spade – Black and Gay Not the Same

Some things in this world are destined to change and some things, no doubt, will remain the same. When it comes to race and sexuality though, homosexual activists, with the help of some misguided black folk, are desperately trying to blur the lines of distinction.

Take, for example, the Atlanta-based political lobby of Georgia Equality Project (GEP). The GEP has taken up the case of being black folks' advocates in an attempt to shore up support for homosexual agendas. They have introduced the People of Color Initiative, which among other things seeks out and encourages African-American homosexuals to run for public office. Harry Knox and his crew are busy profiling themselves with a case involving a black homosexual man who alleges that he is the continuing target of "homophobia" at Ford's Atlanta plant. In one of the most ridiculous stories I have ever heard, Rueben Camp, alleges that he is the victim of antui-gay slurs and physical threats at the company's Hapeville assembly plant. Notice I said is. Camp has filed suit insisting that this is still going on. If it's true, is Ford that crazy to let its employees physically threaten another employee knowing full-well that a lawsuit has been filed against them? Camp claims that while a supervisor and a fellow co-worker looked on, someone physically-assaulted him. The supervisors did nothing as usual, he says. Hmmmm. Well, seeing pristine opportunity to fly his rainbow flag of justice and diversity. Knox and GEP swiftly took up the case as Camp was hailed as a "gay brother" in trouble.

The problem with this scenario is that white gays have typically been just as discriminatory against black gays in their sub-cultural circles as the so-called homophobic heterosexuals they claim are oppressing them.

Jimmie Scott, a gay African-American activist who serves on the board of the GEP took whites to task at a recent gay conference where he candidly challenged the practice of "tokenism" in the gay community.

"Just because you ask a person of color to be on your board, that does not mean that I should be do damn honored." Scott said. "Do not say you want people of color involved in your organization and then not be willing to put any resources behind that. It's an empty phrase. What you really want is a person of color in your board picture to make it look pretty. "

Most African-American gays angrily sat out the ill-fated, but much ballyhooed Millennium March on Washington last April 29-30. Organizers reportedly excluded African-American gay leaders. Cleo Manago of Los Angeles, attended a Human Rights Campaign (HRC) meeting which he says reinforced "classic, anti-black thinking ,."

With all of this hypocritical shape-shifting and in-house racial supremacy going on, it's no wonder white gay activists keep insisting that the color of one's (our) skin is identical to one's (their) sexual methodology. Let me be the first to go on record with a response: HOGWASH! Let's just call a spade a spade; black and gay is not the same! One would have to get on the first Greyghound to heaven and personally get God to admit that he did not have a clue when He created the races. Anyone with a shred of common sense knows that the color of one's skin is an immutable trait. In other words, once you are born it is impossible to change (We are not including a certain popular singer in this).

I think the gay powers-that-be know this. That's why they work overtime trying to shimmy up to African-Americans with talk of like struggles. I cringed when I saw Human Rights Campaign head-warmonger Elizabeth Birch standing next to the James Byrd family in Texas, pretending to be all concerned about what happened to Mr. Byrd. Wow, what a photo op for her, I thought. I wondered if Ms. Birch was so concerned about the plight of African-Americans why had not she shown up at the countless funerals of young black men who have been mowed down by white cops? Well, maybe it was because none of that kinda stuff fit her political stocking stuffers.

Gays have had their supporters among African-Americans. Coretta Scott King and former Health and Human Services director Louis Sullivan both have advocated a black and gay marriage. Ooops, I mean, civil union. Sullivan summed up his support of the black and gay controversy by saying, "Disapproval of a sexual practice is transmuted into the demonization of a sexual species." You figure that out.

I like what Mrs. Alveda King, niece of the civil rights icon MLK, Jr. said at a conference of exgays in Washington, DC. "I have never seen an ex-black, but I've seen plenty of exgays." The fact of the matter is simple. Black Americans do not need another opportunistic group taking advantage of us. We've been manipulated enough, both by some of our own leaders and by those without. It's about time we stopped the free piggy back rides.

How to Shovel Snow Faster

Shovel more often

Use a push style shovel

No dah, right? Nobody wants to shovel more than they have to right? But would you rather shovel more often and save time or wait till you have a mound of snow to plow through and risk hurting your back?

With a little planning and a little effort, winter shoveling can be a lot faster.

When it begins snowing you never know if the snow will be easy or difficult to shovel. As soon as there is a couple inches on the ground get out there and shovel it off. Reasons

  • First it will be very easy shovel
  • You will see where all the obstacles
  • Makes preceding shoveling easy

By getting out there early you will do less work, than if you wait. Lets say a large snow storm is dropping snow. If you wait to dig out, the snow could be really heavy. You won’t be able to see where your driveway ends and the grass begins. The snow could get trampled down which means you’ll have to spend time removing that packed snow.

Sure you’ll do more snow shoveling but it will take you far less time overall and you can then grab your favorite warm drink and watch others struggle to dig themselves out.

I’ve tested this myself and found that it was much easier and spent a lot less time shoveling. I have plenty of time to treat the driveway and sidewalks and kept them clear all winter long. I had no more back pain or sore hands. And found my neighbors following my same plan to their delight.

This will also give you an opportunity to earn a bit of cash as well, helping other people dig themselves out. Add a snow plow to your vehicle and you can be done plowing in no time. Look for a good used snow plow.

How to Lift Your Eyebrow With Botox and Get Rid of Frown Lines

The earliest signs of facial aging occur in our eyes, often beginning in the late twenties and early thirties. The earliest signs are fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, frown lines and crow's feet. Soon we begin to notice that our eyebrows have begun to sag and cover the upper eyelid.

A high arched eyebrow is a classic sign of youthful beauty and alertness. As the eyebrow and forehead descend, a loose fold of skin begins to cover the upper eyelid and make our eyes look tired and old. Botox can help reverse and prevent many of these changes when started early in many people.

Advanced sagging often requires a surgical brow lift, not Botox. However, the early use of Botox can help prevent some of the forces which act to pull the forehead down and cause brow ptosis or sagging.

What Causes Sagging of the Forehead?

As our facial skin ages we lose collagen in the deep layers of the skin. Collagen supports our skin and helps keep the skin tight on our face. As we lose collagen the skin becomes lax and begins to sag.

However, our foreheads and eyebrows are also pulled downward by the action of the muscles around our eyes. When we frown, the frown muscles pull the skin down towards the base of our nose. These muscles the Procerus And Corrugator Muscles are called the frown muscles and contribute to brow ptosis.

In addition, the muscles on the side of our forehead around the eyes, also pull the forehead down when we smile or grimace. These muscles, called the Orbicularis Oculi Muscles cause crow's feet and ptosis or sag.

The combination of facial skin aging with loss of collagen and skin tone and the daily repeated pulling by the frown and crow's feet muscles together, over a lifetime can cause the eyebrow and forehead to sag down over the upper eyelid. This creates a tired older appearance to the face.

How Does the Botox Brow Lift Work?

Botox works by relaxing the muscles that are pulling the forehead down. When Botox is injected into the Procerus and Corrugator frown muscles, the muscles relax and quit pulling down on the forehead near the nose, and the forehead is allowed to elevate. The frown line is also lessened.

When Botox is injected into the upper, lateral or outside portion of the Orbicularis Oculi muscle, the upper crow's feet muscle, the muscle relaxes, stops pulling the outside portion of the foreheaqd down, and the forehead is allowed to elevate.

Two large muscles on the forehead, the Frontalis Muscles, hold and pull the forehead up. The frown and crow's feet muscles pull down against the action of the Frontalis Muscles. When the frown and crow's feet muscles are relaxed by Botox, the Frontalis Muscle can pull up on the forehead unopposed.

What Do Injections Feel Like?

Botox injections should be painless if they are done correctly. I apply a numbing cream to the skin before injection. I also cool the skin and underlying muscle by applying an ice pack or cold titanium roller to the skin before injection.

When these techniques are used, most patients do not even feel the injection.

Are Injections Safe?

Yes when used by an experienced and properly trained physician who is experienced in the use of this agent.

This medication is a safe, carefully prepared synthetic pharmaceutical grade product, and not food poisoning toxin as so often reported in the media.

Like any powerful medication, Botox must be given by an experienced licensed doctor or nurse under direct doctor's supervision.

I do my own injections because I believe technique is very important, and I believe the doctor must understand facial aesthetics and facial rejuvenation principals to achieve the best result possible.

Like any medication, this drug can be over used. However, I have never seen a patient lose their facial expression or look like a figure in a wax museum in my practice. Patients can still smile, show emotion and look normal after injection, they just do not have deep frown lines and crow's feet.

What Are Possible Complications?

Complications are very unusual in my experience. Temporary droop of the eyelid is the most frustrating, but recovery and return to normal takes 2-3 weeks. Lid droop can usually be avoided by proper injection technique.

Headache and flu like syndrome can also occur in some patients, but this is unusual, occurring in less than 2% of patients.

Where Should I Go For Treatment?

You should consult a board certified physician who is experienced in facial aesthetics and facial rejuvenation procedures. Unfortunately many people assume that these injections are easy to do and many doctors and nurses with no formal training in facial aesthetics and facial rejuvenation procedures do these injections.

Your doctor needs to understand how the facial muscles work and what is causing the aging change that you want to correct. Technique is very important if you are going to achieve a good result.

Board certified Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are the most highly trained and expert doctors in these techniques. I suggest that you consult one of these board certified specialists. Personally I would avoid having these injections in a Spa, at a party, or by a non physician.

What Do Injections Cost?

These injections are priced according to the amount of Botox used, which is described in International Units (IU).

A typical treatment can use 25 to 50 IU's. I can usually do the forehead lift with 25 IU's. This can cost between $ 325- $ 500. You will likely pay more to have an experienced board certified expert do your treatment, but I believe you get what you pay for.

Prices vary from $ 13 to $ 20 per IU, depending on the number of areas treated and the number of units used. The more IU's used and the larger number of areas treated, the less the per unit charge.

Be wary of low priced injections. Some unscrupulous providers dilute the material and lower the price. If this happens to you your treatment will be less effective and will not last as long.

Ask your doctor how the dilution is done. There should be 2.5 IU's in each 0.1cc of solution, so a 1 cc syringe should contain 25 IU's.

Ask the questions and make sure you are getting what you pay for.

Caveat Emptor.

How to Replace the Starter on a Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee starter will sometimes fail with very little warning. I have had to change them in store parking lots, driveways and most recently in front of my son’s apartment. Using this simple procedure you can get your Jeep running again quickly and possibly avoid a towing bill.

For most people, there is plenty of room to get access the starter without even jacking up the Jeep. In fact, not jacking it up makes it easier to get the starter past the control arm when removing it from the engine bay.

Remove the negative battery cable

Remove 8MM nut that holds the starter trigger wire to the solenoid.

Remove the lower mounting bolt. Note this is an SAE bolt with 9/16 head. It goes in from the front of the starter.

Remove the upper bolt. This one is metric with a 15 MM head that goes in from the transmission side.

Remove the starter and lower it enough to remove the battery cable from the terminal. This is a 13MM.

To install the new starter, first install the battery cable in place and move the trigger wire out of the way.

Position the starter so that it indexes into the hole in the backing plate. Start the upper bolt but do not tighten. This is the shorter metric one.

Start the lower bolt (longer SAE one) and make sure the starter is aligned properly with the hole in the backing plate. Tighten the bolts.

Attach the trigger wire and tighten the nut.

Reattach the battery cable.

After everything is back in place, you can turn the key and start up your Jeep. Be sure to reset your clock and radio presets that you loose by disconnecting the battery.

Roach Repellent – 5 Ways To Keep Cockroaches Out Of Your Home

Repelling cockroaches is one portion of an integrated pest management solution for ridding your home of cockroach infestations. If the roaches don’t like the environment of your home, they are less likely to enter and nest in the first place. If you can find roach repellents that don’t also repel all the humans you know – even better.

The following 5 roach repellents might just do the trick to make your home the last place a roach wants to live:

Pepper Spray – Roaches don’t like red pepper. So, if you spray surfaces in your kitchen and bath with a solution containing red pepper, the will avoid those surfaces. An easy recipe to whip up a batch of spray is to mix 2 tablespoons of Tobasco Sauce (the primary ingredients are red pepper and vinegar) with 1 quart of water. Pour it into a pump spray bottle and mist it onto surfaces. A word of caution, you will be misting pepper spray into the air. Until the mist settles, you are likely to sneeze more than a few times. Consider wearing a mask when you apply the spray.

Moth Balls – Roaches, like moths, don’t like the smell of moth balls. One common remedy is to drop a couple moth balls behind the stove to keep the bugs from hanging out back there. One or two in the cabinet under the sink can be helpful as well. Moth balls are not good for humans, so don’t place them near food or food prep areas.

Cedar Products – The oils in cedar wood are an effective natural deterrent for a host of bugs. There are many products available to take advantage of this fact. Look for thin cedar veneers that can be used to line drawers and cabinets, cedar balls, blocks, chips, etc to place in drawers and closets, and (of course) cedar boards and paneling to line closet walls for the ultimate protection.

Mint Oil – Mint oil is a primary ingredient in several non-toxic roach sprays. The roaches avoid it, and when coated with it, they suffocate. The sprays don’t kill as fast as typical poisons, but they are safe to use in the kitchen and around pets and children. It is possible to create a spray, like the pepper spray, by diluting some Dr. Brauner’s Peppermint Castile Soap in water and then applying with a spray bottle. I haven’t tried it, but you might be able to create your own roach spray this way if the soap concentration is high enough.

Bay Leaves – Bay leaves are another sent that roaches avoid. You can pick up a bunch of dry bay leaves in the spice section of any grocery. Place whole leaves or small sachets of crushed leaves in closets and cabinets. This is a good option for kitchen cupboards.

With the exception of moth balls, there are no hazardous chemicals in any of these roach repellents. Give them a try, in combination with baiting, sealing, and applications of diatomaceous earth and boric acid to eliminate roaches from your home.

Fagor 3-In-1 Cooker Review – Pressure, Rice, and Slow Cooker in One

Years ago, Mom and Grandma would have loved to have a pressure cooker so that meals could be cooked quickly and deliciously, but they would not get one because they thought they were dangerous. Fast forward to 2010 and meet the Fagor 3-in-1 multi-cooker which is perfect for all your cooking needs. It serves as a pressure cooker, a slow cooker, and a rice cooker, and I do not know what I would do without it. It is the most popular, most versatile, and most efficient appliance in my kitchen. I do not worry for a moment that it might not be safe as it has so many safeguards. Also its very quiet performance assures me it is the perfect choice. No more noise and hissing like the old ones! And I can cut my cooking time by 70%!

It saved my buying three appliances so right off the bat it saved me money. I have gotten a lot of use out of it, and find it indispensable. It has a very heavy self-locking lid; a pop-up pressure indicator; and even a mechanism to release steam so you do not have to run it under cold water or wait for the pressure to release like you did in the old ones. It is very simple to operate. You set the time you want it to cook and it beeps when it is done. The cover is impossible to remove until the pressure is released. You can buy the cheaper cuts of beef and they come out tender. Last week I made fish chowder, cooked it for ten minutes, and it was delicious.

It is the healthiest way to cook as the vitamins and minerals are retained. The slow cooker can be set up to 9.5 hours so that you can set it in the morning before leaving for work, and there will be a hot delicious meal all ready when you come home. There is also a "keep warm" setting so you can eat when YOU want to. It can be used for many purposes "from soup to nuts", the nuts being the performance pressure cookers are known for. You can cook fish, chicken, vegetables, pork, and beef quicker than you can in a microwave, and they will come out tasting better as they do not lose their moisture. There is also a low pressure setting for cooking the vegetables. It also features a browning setting, and a programmable delay timer for up to eight hours, so you can set it to begin operating at your convenience. It has an LED screen and soft-touch control buttons.

An early pressure cooker was called a steam digester, invented by Denis Papin, a French physicist in 1679. It was a device for extracting fats from bones, which made them brittle so they could easily be ground into bone meal. In present day pressure cookers, the food is cooked at a temperature above the normal boiling point of water so viruses and bacteria are killed. AS the pressure increases, the boiling point of water increases, so the pressure built up in the cooker makes the liquid in the pot rise to a higher temperature before boiling. Very little water is required so vegetables are not cooked covered with water like on the stove. In that case, when you throw out the water you lose vitamins and minerals. In the Fagor multi-cooker, small to medium potatoes cook in eight minutes, shredded cabbage in one minute, and fresh green beans in three minutes. Lentils, beans, and brown rice which normally cook in 45 minutes can cook in 10 minutes.

The durability of stainless steel is well-known, and this brushed stainless pressure cooker fills the bill. It is also very attractive and you just have to wipe the outside to keep it looking great. When you put the Fagor away it is saving space as you are storing one appliance instead of three. It measures 11.5 x 13.5 x 11.5 inches, and weighs 15.2 pounds. The third function of the Fagor is cooking rice. It can prepare anything from sushi rice to rice pudding. All you have to do is enter the ingredients, close the lid, and press the rice cooking button. In just SIX MINUTES you rice will be steamed, perfectly cooked and ready for you to enjoy. No more burned or soggy rice.

With the browning feature of the Fagor, you can use it at the end of the slow cooker cycle to create boiling water in order to add a thickener such as flour or cornstarch. The possibilities with this cooker are endless. Choose between high (9psi) and low (5psi) pressure, depending on what you are cooking. It also has an anti-heating feature for safety. It has plenty of capacity for cooking for a family. It has so many features, purchasing it is, in my opinion, a no-brainer.

Window Replacement Options – Glass Or Plastic?

If you're planning new windows, it is important to get the style right for your house. If the windows look wrong, the whole house can look wrong. When we look at a house, it is usually the windows that catch our attention first – like the eyes in someone's face. Most people automatically think about glass panes when considering new windows, but plastic is an alternative that could work well for you.

Are Plastic Window Panes the Right Choice for You?

The Pros of Plastic

  • They can be a better alternative than glass for security because plastic windows are more resistant to cracking or breaking.
  • They provide better insulation than glass.
  • They offer a range of colored tints, which allows you to have patterned glass, for example, or darker windows to reduce the heat from direct sunlight.
  • Plastic storm window sheets can be applied to the interior of your glass windows to temporarily improve the strength and insulation of the window. The results are not always very attractive so this is best reserved for windows that are less visible.

The Cons of Plastic

  • They scratch more easily than glass, so greater care is needed especially when cleaning them. Avoid using any kind of abrasive cleaner or cloth. Plastic window polish can be used to remove minor scratches.
  • They can lack character, and you could lose a lot of the period charm of your property if you are not careful in your choice. For example, replacing leaded panes of glass with flat plastic panes can leave your windows looking dull and lifeless.

Conclusion

Plastic windows might be the best choice for you if your home is exposed to extreme weather conditions, especially high winds and cold temperatures. They might also be the best option for windows that are vulnerable to burglary.
