Ten Hardware Store Must-Haves for Every Home

Every home, no matter how new, needs small repairs now and again. For new homeowners and beginning DIYers, it’s hard to know what tools are needed to get the job done. The hardware store is so full of great options, browsing the aisles can feel overwhelming. The following are the ten essential tools every homeowner needs to be prepared for everyday fixes.

1. Hammer

A smooth-faced hammer with a comfortable grip is ideal for a variety of uses, such as hanging pictures and assembling furniture. A curved claw is handy for pulling out bent nails, while a straight claw works for occasional demolition.

2. Screwdriver Set

Light fixtures, cabinets, switch plates, doorknobs: homes are full of items requiring screws. A mixed-set of screwdrivers with a variety of flat head and Philips head sizes is an excellent investment and will be used time and time again. Magnetic heads are a helpful feature, as are comfortable no-slip rubber grips.

3. Duct Tape

The be-all and end-all of home repair tools, duct tape is a quick, easy fix for rips, tears, holes, and leaks. Super sticky and thick, duct tape is great for patching, and the hardware store now carries a variety of colors and designs. It is also a great temporary solution for plumbing issues. It stops leaks long enough for professional help to arrive.

4. Tape Measure

Available in a variety of sizes, 16′ will get you through most household projects. An easy-locking, 3/4in wide design is sturdy enough to stay in place without being too bulky. Look for one with a nice hook at the end for easy gripping.

5. Set of Pliers

Tough enough to pinch and bend metal, yet flexible enough to hold tiny objects steady, pliers are necessary for getting a firm grip on just about anything. Look for a set that includes long-nose, tongue-and-groove, and side-cutting pliers.

6. Long and Short Adjustable Wrenches

Needed for manipulating hex nuts and bolts, both a long and short adjustable wrench will see you through many home repairs. For sticky nuts, use the longer handle wrench for more leverage. When space is tight, the shorter handle wrench is needed. The adjustable feature ensures they will fit around bolts of all sizes.

7. Utility Knife

This extremely versatile tool has a multitude of uses including opening boxes, cutting through carpet, scraping paint, and shaving wood. Invest in a high-quality model with a comfortable rubber handle. Blade storage is also a convenient feature, and increases safety, since it makes changing the blade quick and easy.

8. Level

A must-have for keeping things straight and even, the hardware store has a wide range when it comes to levels. There are high-tech laser levels, but for most household projects a good old-fashioned bubble level is accurate, easy to use, and gets the job done.

9. Cordless Drill and Drill bit Set

Power drills make a lot of household projects quicker and easier. Cordless options are very convenient and guarantee no hunting for wall outlets. A drill bit set with a variety with metal, wood, and universal options ensures you have the right bit for all needs.

10. Stepladder

For the vertically challenged, a stepladder is an invaluable tool. Changing light bulbs, putting up curtains, changing smoke detector batteries- stepladders make all height-based tasks easier and safer.

All of these options (and much more) are available at the local hardware store. With these ten tools on hand, basic repairs and projects will be a breeze!

5 Tips to Revamp Your Interior Space

Now that you have bought a new house or have refurbished the exterior of your existing space, it is time to create that perfect look for your home, something that you have been earnestly waiting for. By picking light or neutral color accessories, one is creating a space that will appear larger than it already is. If one uses dark colored sofa upholstery or paints a dark wall, the space will look smaller and the room will appear compact. So, whether one is deciding the colors for curtains or any other home accessory, it is important to pick light, neutral tones that will enhance the living space of the room.

2) Always have a Feature Wall:

In order to provide that luxe look to your space, it is recommended to have one main wall that could be a feature wall. One can either paint it in a different color, or have a different kind of wall paper on it. This type of wall is also called the focus wall which further enhances the overall look of the space. One can either place nice wall hangings or even hang some statement art pieces on it which will only add that extra panache to your living space.

3) Use a Good Quality Handmade Rug:

Imagine a space with no rug at all, even though one might have the best Italian flooring or wooden flooring. It would look empty, bare and would appear as if something is missing. It is mandatory to use a good quality handmade rug to complete the look of your space. It is important to identify what type of rug one wants considering there is a wide variety of option available. Our experts recommend to use a good quality handmade carpet instead of a machine made rug which far less durable. A handmade rug adds that luxury look to ones living space.

If it is a formal kind of setting, one can opt for a pure silk carpet or an original Persian carpet. As good quality silk carpet depends upon a number of factors like knots per square inch, the weave, density and the design pattern.

4) Less is More

It doesn’t mean that by placing various home accessories in one space, your interiors would look better. The key is less is more. It is recommended to place less stuff in your living space that will only exude further sophistication and would that finesse to your interiors. In a nutshell, it is always quality over quantity.

5) De-clutter your Living Space

It is often seen that there are a lot of wanted things lying aimlessly in ones living space. Get that Sunday cleaning done now before it starts accumulating and your space looks all cluttered. Whatever is not required, remove that extra baggage and create a haven of beautiful things with less stuff around.

To conclude, it would be wise to follow and implement the aforementioned interior tips and tricks to make your space look neater, cleaner and more sophisticated. There are always a number of options available to choose from, however it is important to learn how to decorate your space with less number of home accessories and preferably use light or neutral color interiors for you living space.

Painting With Gouache

Several people have accessed my web site over the last few years as a result of doing web searches on painting in gouache (pronounced “gwosh”, or “goo-wash”), probably lead there by the numerous gouache paintings listed on the site. There is some conflicting information published on this topic. Consequently, this article is to help you better understand this opaque watercolor medium based on over thirty-five years of experience in using it and as a professional art educator.

Purportedly, the ancient Egyptians first employed this paint and its use was later refined by the Italians, where we get the word originating as aguazzo, or guazzo. This is said to refer to “mud”, or “watercolor paint, splash”. It is some times used interchangeably as bodycolor and designer’s colors. Guazzo also supposedly was an idiom to describe the 16th Century technique of applying oils over tempera paint. None-the-less, gouache paints were exploited by illuminated manuscript artists and was later popular with some European decorative, as well as, landscape and nature artists, such as Albrecht Durer. Because opaque paints dry fast and can be applied with a flat, even tone, during the nineteen hundreds gouache was often the favorite of architectural and advertising illustrators; hence the paint got its moniker “designer’s colors.”

A gouache paint body is composed of several elements, including pigment and an opacity agent. These density additives differ depending on the manufacturer. Some contain blanc fixe (French for permanent white); in this case its barium sulfate (also used as a filler in papers). Other makers incorporate calcium carbonate, more commonly known as chalk, or a “precipitated” (technical for synthetic) chalk. When the water container for rinsing brushes in during this painting process is emptied, one can see the thickening material as sludge on the bottom of the container. Gum arabic is the binding agent all gouache paint makers embrace to coalesce the ingredients. In some cases glycerin and preservatives are also mixed in. The principle differences between transparent watercolors and opaque is the addition of a chalky substance and the amount of gum arabic; gouache contains a higher concentration of the latter. When gouache is applied as an impasto, it’s the gum arabic that can give the dried painting a pearly patina. If used too thick, as with tempera, the paint will crack. Normally, a gouache painting will have a dull surface appearance. This makes it ideal for photographic reproductive purposes and is another reason why it has been popular with illustrators.

A few sources I’ve read say that gouache comes only in tubes. That is not so. I’ve got a Pelikan brand pan set that I acquired in my teens when I first started using this type of paint in the mid 1970’s. These pans, called a “cake” form, have the advantage of being able to acquire replaceable color cakes and a built in palette. Because gouache paints can be rewet and worked when dry, as cakes become empty you can squeeze tube paints into the cake receptacles. Tubes of gouache are said to have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years, that’s when the tubes solidify. When this occurs I break open the tubes and use the dried form just as I do the cake variety. Sometimes I will use a single edge razor blade to shave off needed amounts into a palette. Apparently gouache also can be purchased as a liquid, but only in small jars of black or white. These are probably the only two available because they are the two colors used in largest quantities and the heavy opacity content causes settling in the jars.

A few advantages and uses of gouache have already been addressed, yet there are more. Because gouache painting materials are easily transportable and dry fast, as with transparent colors, they are ideal for plein air (painting outdoors) pieces and some artists have used gouache as preliminary sketches for larger oils. As stated earlier gouache can be rewet after it dries, so, plein air paintings can be reworked back in the studio. This quality also allows colors to be gradually blended and mixed on the painting’s surface. Furthermore, gouache works fine on tinted papers and may also serve as an underpainting for pastels.

The transparent watercolor techniques of wet-on-wet, dry brush and spattering can also be accomplished with gouache. However, due to the opacity material paints do not bleed, or blossom, as much in wet-on-wet as transparent colors. Liquid masking agents may also be used for blocking out areas to leave white, though most gouache artists just take advantage of white paint. As you may know, “glazing” in painting is the process of painting a thin, diluted layer of color over another. Once again, because of the chalky substance in gouache, many believe you cannot use glazing with gouache. However, to solve the problem of the base paint mixing with the diluted paint as the glaze is brushed on. I spray a single layer of fixative (the same stuff used on pencils, chalk, and pastels to keep them from smearing) over the work and let it dry. Then I glaze over an area, particularly for shadows. There are two concerns in doing this. First of all the fixative cannot be too thick or else the paint you put over the top will bead up and not cover. The second also must be kept in mind and planned for. It can change the color, especially washing out thin layers of white areas. I will address this again when I talk about finishing paintings. Additionally, I’ve also satisfactorily used gouache for air brushing, as in the paintings “Family Outing” and “Morning Stretch”.

The ability to be mixed with other water base paints is another admirable characteristic of gouache, especially with transparent watercolors. It’s been said that gouache does not mix well with acrylics because the paint will glob up, think of it as curdling, as cottage cheese. I have never had this problem, but then I don’t use a lot of gouache from tubes added directly with acrylic paint, only small amounts. The way I mix them works quite well. However, since acrylic dries as plastic with a slick surface, in order to paint gouache over acrylics, a thin layer of fixative needs to be applied to let the gouache bind.

Any watercolor papers used for transparent watercolor painting may be used with gouache. Hot pressed, or smooth toothed papers of 140 pounds or thicker work well. I prefer to use mounted rag paper called watercolor board made by Crescent. Another paper I’ve had success with is a four ply rag paper used in museum mounting. This paper I wet and then stretch over a wooden frame made of one by two’s. The softened cotton paper is then stretched and stapled just as you would canvas.

When it comes to finishing and displaying gouache paintings there are numerous issues to consider. The most common way to approach framing gouache is to handle the same as you do transparent watercolors, matted and framed under glass. In the mid 1980’s I stopped using this method for three reasons. A gouache painting, “Misty Warm December”, I had entered in a National Wildlife Art Collector’s Society exhibit in Minneapolis, Minnesota was disqualified from competition by the judges because they thought the original was a print, no brush strokes were apparent on the surface of the paper, it had an even, flat surface appearance and was under a white mat.

The second reason has two inherent issues that arise with shipping paintings under glass. One is increased expense of transportation due to weight compared to paintings not under glass and the other is breakage. To address these problems I took a look at how acrylics were handled. Gouache paintings can be finished with any acrylic varnish medium; however, a few layers of fixative must be sprayed on so the paint is not smeared by the acrylic varnish. This will eliminate the dull, chalky appearance of gouache and the pieces will look like oils. These pictures I then put directly into frames without glass. For some reason, I’ve noticed that pictures with a high gloss varnish tend to sell faster than others.

The third reason I prefer to acrylic varnish over gouache is the richness and depth it brings to the color qualities of the finished product. This obviously means that the colors will change somewhat. Consequently, you need to practice with this technique several times to be familiar with how it affects paints. When it comes to creating the illusion of water and make it truly feel wet, there is no other type of paint I’ve worked with that will do the same job. Since whites tend to wash out, to get strong whites and other bright colors I mix in acrylics.

As with any watercolor, transparent or opaque, no matter how the work is framed when it comes to displaying them make sure that they are out of direct sunlight and are not under long term exposure in fluorescent lights, as these give off a low level UV radiation that will eventually fade the colors, unless they are under UV protective glass.

Hopefully, you’ve gained some insight into this versatile medium of gouache and are not afraid to try it yourself. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

2 AWG Copper Electrical Cables That Are Direct Burial

There are many types of electrical cables out there with different types of insulation that allow it to be exposed to certain environmental conditions. Don’t forget, these cables also need to withstand certain voltage, amperage and temperature requirements depending on the application as well.

As for direct burial cables that have 2 AWG wires in them; a Tray Cable is the most universal type of electrical cable used in the industry. It’s basic, it’s round and it can be placed in conduit or buried directly in the ground if you so choose. The best part about it is the pricing. Copper weight cannot be changed no matter what happens, so if you’re looking for three 2 AWG wires in a jacket that can be protected from underground use then the insulation and the jacket will be the only differences in your search.

If you need a single conductor 2 AWG wire without an additional jacket you can use USE-2 solar panel wire. Don’t assume that it can only be used for solar panels because a 2 AWG copper cable is a 2 AWG copper cable. You’re looking for enough protection to use it underground and the insulation on a USE-2 cable has exactly that.

Some cables that get confused about direct burial are SOOW and Type W. SOOW is oil and water resistant and approved to be used outdoors but not in conduit or underground. Type W is an SOOW cable on steroids as it’s bumped up to 2000 volts from 600 with an additional rubber EPDM jacket for added protection. However, it still cannot be used in conduit or underground. The added protection is meant for industrial use on industrial job sites where machines will be running over the cable day to day.

So if you’re looking for a direct burial single wire you should use USE-2 and if you’re looking for a cable with multiple 2 AWG wires in it then you should use Tray Cable. Talk to your supplier about your application to make sure you’re buying the correct electrical cable. There is also different flexibility options you might want to consider for a slightly higher price.

You might be able to slightly downgrade the cable to save money and spend a less amount on conduit if your object is to save money. There are many scenarios that can be worked out so make sure you at least have the discussion with a professional before diving into an underground cable.

Tips For an Underwire Swimsuit

No matter what body type you may have there is a specially designed type made just for your body shape. If you are a woman who needs additional lift, support, or comfort then underwire swimsuits were made just for you. The first main benefit of the underwire swimsuit is for women who need more lift and volume. If you are more modestly breasted this is the design and style of swimsuit that will give you an added look. The top is specially made to have a thin wire type material, or hard plastic, that loops around the top to provide lift and support. Basically what this top is designed to is push together your breasts in order to give them a more full and robust look. This small detail can really make the difference for some women. You can find some underwire suits that have a demi cup which provides added protection and the perception of more volume. One tip here is to find a top that has either ruffles or frills as this will increase the appearance of a more full look. In addition, you can purchase your suit in prints and patterns to give a more busy look, thus giving you even more enhancement to how large your top area will look.

The other great benefit with underwire swimwear is for women who are greatly endowed and have trouble keeping themselves inside their tops. If you find that you are falling out of your top and struggling to keep it all together then the underwire design is just what you need. The underwire gives you excellent support, and the very best models will do this without the wire digging in to the skin. These swimsuits give you confidence that all day no matter what you do you will not have to worry about spilling out of your swimsuit. For added containment you will want to find and underwire suit that has wider straps as this will give you additional support and control. One tip to consider here is that if you want to give an appearance is smaller breasts then buy a swimsuit that has wider than normal straps. Also, to give a reduced appearance up top then avoid prints and bright colors as these accentuate volume.

If you are accustomed to shopping for underwire bras and wearing them then you will know exactly what to look for in an underwire swimsuit. You understand that a good underwire bra will have the underwire fit right underneath the cups and wrap around. A nice feature is to look for a floating underwire in your swimsuit. With this design the underwire is made to move and adjust as you do, and it is much more comfortable to wear. Keep these tips in mind as you shop for your underwire bathing suit in either a one or two piece design.

Before you go for any method to lose fat for some particular area, you need to understand one thing clearly. The weight loss diets always make you lose weight from the entire body. Losing weight from only one particular area is not impossible, but it calls for some workouts. Actually, the impact of the weight loss diets can be transformed & utilized for a specific area with the planned exercises. The diet pills or supplements loosen up the fat cells of the entire body. With the workouts you burn them from a particular area more than the others.

Disadvantages of Accelerated Degree Programs (What They Don’t Want You to Know)

It seems like accelerated degrees are all of the rage these days, and everybody wants to jump on the bandwagon and get started with this move. It’s certainly an intriguing possibility, and in truth, it holds many advantages that people find appealing. But that doesn’t mean that it’s perfect for everybody and all situations. Take a look at these potential disadvantages of accelerated learning to see whether or not it’s a good match for you.

One of the main disadvantages that some people run into is that accelerated programs simply mean you are doing more in less time. That means you are going to have a busy, crowded schedule, and there’s always going to be a lot on your plate.

For some people, this makes taking these programs very difficult. When you have a full-time job, you have a family and you have other responsibilities too, attending class at all can be hard, let alone doing it at a lightning quick speed. Therefore, you have to really consider if you’ll be able to handle the workload and move quickly ahead with a lot of work at the same time.

Some people don’t really like the online format that these accelerated programs are offered in. Online programs have come a very long way since their inception. They are more diverse and offer a much richer learning experience than ever in the past thanks to improvements in technology and quicker Internet speeds. But they still don’t perfectly emulate the real classroom learning environment.

When you study online, you have to be able to motivate yourself at all times. There is no set schedule and class time you have to attend, and there are no classmates and teachers looking over your shoulder. It’s really all up to you, and if you’re not a self-motivated person, you could potentially struggle.

Of course, that also means you need access to all of the right equipment in order to really thrive in your online class environment. You’ll need your own computer, the right kinds of software, fast Internet connection speeds, and a quiet place where you can comfortably study and learn. Not everyone has all of this, so this can be viewed as another potential disadvantage.

Finally, some kinds of programs simply aren’t going to work well in the online format. Some things you really need to work with hands-on, and learning on your own in a book doesn’t do it justice. So the topic of study is something that you need to evaluate to see if it will be match for an accelerated, online format of learning.

As you can see, despite all the hype and the buzz, accelerated degrees still aren’t going to be perfect for everyone. There are a handful of different potential disadvantages to be aware of, and it’s enough to make this something you’ll have to carefully consider. Still, despite all of the above, most people find this a convenient and accessible option that works for them.

Keeping Your Cuisinart Electric Tea Kettle Clean

A Cuisinart electric tea kettle is a great appliance for brewing a perfect pot of tea any time, all the time. But your tea will taste much better if you keep the kettle impeccably clean. Nothing affects the taste of tea more negatively than the presence of lime deposits or the build up of tannic acid.

Most manufacturers offer a special cleaner available through their websites and usually include a sample of it with your purchase. These are great products, but it is not necessary to spend the extra money.

Just like your coffeemaker, a Cuisinart electric tea kettle can easily be cleaned using plain old white vinegar. Wash the pot, rinse it, and then add a half and half mixture of tap water and vinegar. Replace the filter basket and then run the kettle through its normal cycle. When it is complete, empty the vinegar mixture and fill the kettle back up with water. Run it through a complete cycle one more time and it will then be ready to make a fresh pot of tasty tea.

There are some special considerations depending on what material the tea kettle is made of. A stainless steel kettle, for instance, can scratch if you use a harsh powdered cleanser on the exterior. The same plain white vinegar you use to clean the interior can also polish the exterior finish to a shine. If it has baked on food or grease from uncovered pans on the stove, you can make a paste out of vinegar or lemon juice with baking soda to scrub it off. This natural scrub will not scratch the finish.

Be sure to rinse your tea kettle after each use and give it a thorough washing once a week. The vinegar cycle can be completed as needed but usually once a month is sufficient. Wipe the exterior with a damp sponge or rag as necessary.

Your Cuisinart electric tea kettle is made to last a long time with proper care. Keep it clean and you will find that every pot of tea you brew will be perfect, every time.

How Heat Affects the Food You Eat

The application of heat to a food can change the taste of that certain food so that it seems to be entirely different. Here’s how:

By subjecting food to heat we are able to change its color, texture, form and flavor. For instance, as meat cooks in the oven, it shrinks and its shape changes. It goes from deep red to reddish brown. The soft texture of the uncooked meat fibers hardens and then tenderizes which changes the flavor. Fats in the tissues melt. You may notice that some fat escapes from the pan from even the best trimmed piece of meat. When meat is cooked properly, the fat and juices are dispersed among the fibers to make the meat tender. Meat that is over cooked loses too much juice and liquefied fat. Meat that is undercooked will retain its juices but the proteins will not be sufficiently cooked and the muscle will be tough.

Some foods that are heated together become completely changed and form something quite different from the original. An example would be gravy; the butter, flour and liquid, which originally have individual identities, are joined into one by heat. Slow and gentle heat makes the flour swell and absorb the liquid.

The same processes take place in vegetables and fruits; the harder fibers are softened and the starchy elements absorb liquid. Overcooking fruit makes the fibers soft and it loses its shape and becomes mushy. If you want to make jelly, the fruit should be cooked until it is completely shapeless; then it is strained to make the jelly.

Some vegetables, such as spinach, contain so much liquid that you do not need to add more for cooking. More starchy vegetables, like potatoes, need some liquid to make their starches swell and soften.

Cooking heat can be applied in many ways.

1. Hot liquid as in boiling, simmering, blanching, poaching and scalding.

2. Hot bath such as frying as in fat (or in deep fat) where foods such as French fries are immersed in the fat.

3. Hot metal as when a steak is pan broiled, or where any food is cooked in greaseless pans.

4. Radiation, where the heat is given off by the red hot coils of an electric stove unit or by the flame of the gas stove or charcoal of a barbecue.

5. Trapped heat, which is the heat contained in ovens of various kinds. This type of heat combines two basic principles: Part of the baking is done by heat coming from the hot metal walls and grill of the oven and is therefore radiant heat; the other part of the baking is done by the trapped heat, the heated air. When the oven door is opened, part of the heated air from the oven escapes and the oven temperature is reduced. This explains why oven doors should be opened as few times as possible when a delicate food like a cake is baking.

The heat adjustments between a gas and electric stove are different. On a gas stove, the degree of heat can be changed almost instantly. It takes somewhat longer for the heat to increase or decrease on an electric stove. You will have to watch your foods closely to make sure that they are not overcooked. Take your pan of food off of the stove immediately instead of just turning off the heat.

The effects of cold and heat on your foods can change their taste and texture dramatically. Some people may love raw carrots but hate them when they are cooked. Knowing how heat can affect the foods that you eat will help you become a better cook.

Understanding the Original Emule Free Download and It’s Mods

Emule is basically an open-source file sharing program which shares users with the eDonkey2000. The source code of this software is available to everyone. Its not surprising, therefore, that you’d find numerous mods online. Anyone who knows the programming language C++ can create a derivative of Emule, a derivative with its own unique features that you can put online as Emule free download.

The Popular Emule Derivatives

There are many famous derivatives that are available as Emule free download. You can download them easily. All you need is your computer and fast internet connection; and you’d be all set. Some of the popular mods include iONiX, MorphXT, NeoMule, NetF, Sivka, tHe PHoeniX, Webacache, Xtreme and ZZUL. These are all Emule download free versions.

The Difference between the Mods and the Original

Mods have various features unique only to each and one of them. Often though, they share similar features that are marked improvement from the Original client. There are mods that would experiment with coding to avoid provider restrictions, quite similar to the attempts of BitTorrent. These experiments have been, however, frowned at. Some people argue that providers could easily switch to Stupid Throttling – a bad news to consumers. This switch would create incompatibility between the Client and the eDonkey network. This would deprive users of better sources when they download emule.

There are mods that have the Webcache control feature. This feature allows for faster data distribution. Most mods also have better source management control and a marked shift from file priority attitude toward file quality data. There are also marked changes on the original client’s GUI.

Avoiding Malicious Emule Free Download

If there are mods that are reliable, there are also unreliable mods. You just have to be careful when you download Emule. These mods contain malware like spyware, adware and Trojans. Most malicious mods are filtered out, however, by Emule. If you end up downloading a malicious Emule download free mod, perhaps, you can look into some online forum. People would graciously give advices on how to remove the software, how to avoid the malware and which mod to choose.

Working Emule Free Download on Windows Vista

Essentially, Emule is a P2P application that is designed primarily for Windows platform. This is perfect for users of eDonkey and Kad Networks. People who using other versions of Windows except for Windows Vista do not encounter problems with downloads and uploads. However, developers of Windows Vista had installed tightened security and access control in Windows Vista.

Users of this platform experience difficulty whenever they would attempt to download Emule. They could download and install Emule but they encounter problems when they try to download files. Often, the files would get stuck at 99 percent download. If this happens to you, it might be a good idea to check on what version of Emule you downloaded. Some mods do not support Windows Vista. However, the latest versions of Emule starting from Emule 0.47c support this Windows platform. There are some suggestions only on how you can run other Emule versions on Windows Vista. You can inquire from online forums or search through your favorite search engine.

Your New Portable Kitchen – 12 Volt Travel Appliances

Now it’s easier than ever to prepare a fresh hot healthy meal in your car, truck, RV or anywhere you can find a 12V power source.

Folks have been using their 12 volt coolers as portable refrigerators for quite some time. There are many factors to consider when choosing a cooler/warmer that’s right for you. I say cooler/warmer because many 12 volt coolers can also keep stuff warm. The most common use has been mentioned, a portable refrigerator. Many of these coolers are intended to stand on end just like a real refrigerator and are capable of cooling up to 40 degrees below the ambient temperature. This means that you can be comfortable in your vehicle and not have to worry that your food might spoil. There are many sizes and styles available to choose from. You may also be considering a 12 volt rechargeable cooler. That’s a great choice for those who enjoy a day picnic or hiking trip. You may decide to purchase an AC to DC converter so that you may charge your cooler over the night before your trip in your house. Charging can take up to 5 hours depending on the model of cooler you choose.

I can’t start my day without a fresh hot cup of coffee and I do not like instant. Yuk! I’m a die hard perker so when I take a trip I’m sure to have my 12 volt coffee maker with me. There’s nothing to it. Just like a normal coffee maker in your kitchen, add water and coffee grounds and turn it on. These coffee makers plug directly into your 12 volt cigar lighter socket. There are many 12 volt coffee makers to choose from. I do not recommend using your coffee maker while operating your vehicle or while in a vehicle that’s in motion. Full hot pots of coffee at high speeds is never a great idea.

Are you a fresh fruit and vegetable drink fanatic? This can be just as rewarding as a big breakfast and a strong cup of coffee. Not the breakfast type? A power lunch might be on your menu once you begin looking at 12 volt blenders. Great for all of your common blender uses when preparing a meal or snack, the 12 volt blender is a great addition to your mobile kitchen. While you may not get the super fine juicing results of a real fruit/veggie juicer it is the next best thing. Home juicer owners may consider a 12V DC to 110V AC power inverter to opperate your juicer while traveling.

What’s next? Ahhh yes, time to cook up some of that great food you have been keeping cool in your 12 volt cooler. Once again there are many options and many factors to consider when choosing the 12 volt cooking accessories that are right for you. There are 12 volt frying pans w/lid, 12 volt sauce/popcorn pans w/lid, 12 volt stoves, 12 volt ovens and 12 volt slow cookers. There are even aluminum pans made just for use with the 12 volt ovens.

There are many 12 volt cigar lighter socket multipliers/multiplexers to choose from so you can have a socket for every one of your 12 volt kitchen items. Something that many people don’t think about or maybe they just don’t know about is power supply and safety. If you aren’t careful when hooking up all of your 12 volt stuff you could very well end up with a big problem. You must take into consideration the power requirements of each item you intend to power up. Most vehicle wiring is only rated for 20-30 amps. What does this mean for you? Well if you plug a few things in and blow a fuse when you turn them on you need more power. Installing a larger fuse may work but it may also help you to create a vehicle fire. You must ensure that the wire leading to and from the fuse can handle the power you will now be putting through it.

12 volt power recommendations. This is just a brief description about installing more 12 volt power options in your car, truck or RV. Some mechanical skills are required to perform this work. You should install a new 12 volt outlet for each appliance or device you intend to operate. This is a very simple task for most truckers and car travelers, RVs are just as easy but running your new wire may be a bit more time consuming. If you plan to install several new 12 volt power outlets in the same general area you may consider picking up a small automotive fuse block. In most cases running (from your vehicles positive battery terminal) a length of 8 gauge power wire. A car amplifier installation kit is a great way to pick up the desired 8 gauge wire. Do not connect the wire to the battery until EVERYTHING else is done. Run your new wire from the battery compartment to the area where you will install your new fuse block. Once your fuse block is all wired up and your new 12 volt sockets are installed and properly connected to your fuse block you can hook up your new power wire to your vehicle battery.

Garage Door Springs, The Danger Zone

Usually, the largest mechanical thing around your house is the overhead garage door – the one you’re driving your car through, sometimes without even opening it – I know that you do :-).

The major, and the most dangerous componnent of the overhead door is the garage door spring – (or springs depending on the design), which supports the entire weight of the door panels (sometimes over 400 pounds) and helps you to lift / lower the entire door assembly. I have personally installed 3 overhead garage doors with 2 different types of springs, and you do have to trust me on that – garage door springs are under enormous pressure and you can get seriously injured or even killed when performing such work. If you decide to take your chances – it is imperative that you follow instructions to the last detail! Even if you have a friend or a professional doing it for you, read it and check everything after the installer finishes the job. The garage overhead doors have no safety brakes (at least I haven’t heard about any), that would prevent it from falling down when the supporting spring fails. I’ve found some US patents for such devices, but apparently none of them were ever implemented into an actual garage door.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, garage overhead door related accidents account for thousands of injuries every year (average of 30000 per year). For example, these injuries are: fractures, crushings and amputations. It is believed that not all injuries are reported in the United States . (CPSC)

There are basically two types of the garage door spring systems utilizing tracks / side rails (at least these are the most common types in Illinois and probably the rest of US):

1. garage door torsion spring(s) which are wound-up on a rod above the garage door opening top section ( door header)

2. garage door extension springs that are attached on either side of the door and stretch along the horizontal part of the track when the door is closed

You might also have an old, one piece door that swings outward as it goes up and overhead. This particular design will have springs mounted on the sides of the door opening – at about your waist height, secured to a lever bracket system that extends the springs toward the ceiling at the door closing. It is an old and extremely dangerous system, not manufactured anymore. If you have such a system in the garage, I’d highly recommend replacing it.

Garage door torsion springs – there are either single or double spring designs. The spring will usually break while under the maximum stress which is when the overhead garage door closes / travels down, or it is already completely closed (USUALLY). If you’re closing it manually and it happens during this operation, don’t try to prevent it from crushing down, let it go … well, unless your foot is where the door will slam!

When one of the two garage door springs breaks you need to have them both replaced at the same time! It will cost some extra money, but having an old and new spring installed will:

– put much more stress on the new one

– the door will loose proper balance

– the remaining old garage door spring will most likely break soon

Torsion springs for residential overhead garage doors have anywhere between 5000 – 30000 cycles life span. Those digits represent an average total number of times you should be able to open and close your door before anticipating garage door spring replacement.

Garage door extension springs – you might have either one or two on each side of your overhead garage door A critical issue with those springs is to have a safety cable installed inside of each single spring and secured properly, so when the door opens and closes, the spring can freely slide on this cable! When the garage door spring snaps without the cable inside, broken ends might severely injure anyone standing within their range. The cables should be always included with the overhead garage doors hardware (assuming that they came equipped with extension springs), but A LOT OF PEOPLE either forget to install them, or don’t read instructions and maybe assume that they are not required. Unlike the torsion spring, which doesn’t really show any visual wear until it breaks, extension spring wear is much easier to spot, because they simply change dimensions: the coils are over-stretched (best visible when the garage door is open). If you notice such a behavior on your garage door springs – it’s time for a replacement.

And for both types of the garage door springs – their tension should be evenly adjusted (on a two spring system) so the overhead door travels properly in its tracks – to test it, stop the door slightly above the garage floor (1″ or two) and make sure that its bottom / top edge are perfectly horizontal. Measuring the gap along the bottom might not be the best way to confirm that, because the garage floors are often out of level. Placing a level somewhere in the center section of the garage door top edge would give you the best readout (remember that the door should not be closed completely!). When the springs are properly adjusted, you should be able to raise and stop the garage door at any height, and it should stay at this level without any assistance ( garage door opener arm disconnected).

Important things to remember:

1. Check the rollers / hinges, cables, and the overhead garage door springsoften to ensure they are in good working condition

2. Educate your children about garage door safety

3. Never leave children and disabled persons unattended near or in a garage door path

4. Keep your body clear of the door path when closing

5. Don’t leave a personal property underneath an open garage door

6. Read more about the garage door opener and other garage components

5 Steps to Replace a Septic Distribution Box

The septic tank system has a septic distribution box that removes the wastewater. With time, the box can go through the wear and tear process and needs to be replaced. Although replacing the box is not hard, the work is grueling and messy. If you want to do the job on your own, the steps explained in this article can help.

#1 Look For the Distribution Box

Finding the box is not difficult at all. Usually, the box is placed downhill. Alternatively, you can find it at the bottom of some sloping area on your building. The slop works with gravity to pull and distribute the wastewater. If you are unable to locate it, we suggest that you contact the relevant office in your town. They can provide you with a copy of the documents that can identify exactly where the distribution box is located.

#2 Excavations

Usually, the distribution box is buried and can be uncovered by digging the ground with a shovel. All you need to do is shovel until you can see the box. Once you can see the box, you should keep digging around the box so that you can easily pull the box out of the hole. Make sure you don’t break anything while digging.

#3 Get the Distribution Box Out

Typically, many pipes go into the box. The pipes serve as a means of transferring wastewater. Once you have taken the box out of the hole, you should wiggle it until the pipes get separated from the box. Now, you can disconnect the popes from the other side of the box. As soon as you have removed all the pipes, the box will be free.

#4 Find a New Place

Once you have removed the old box, you need to find a new area to bury it. You can use the shovel for digging and finding the right place. Within a few minutes, you can find the right place.

#5 Rebury the Distribution Box

Once you have found the right place, you should put the new box in the hole you dug. Make sure you have reconnected all the pipes. Now, you should adjust the box making sure that the pipes are connected the right way inside the distribution box. You should check each pipe to ensure they are connected properly. Once you have checked all of them, your next move is to apply some plumber’s putty on the points where each pipe goes into the box. Apply the solution both inside and outside the connecting points. This is to make sure the pipes are sealed properly and there will be no leakage. As soon as you are done with this step, you can rebury the box. That’s it.

So, this is a simple way of replacing a bad septic distribution box. If you have understood the process, you can go about fixing the box yourself. But if you need more help, you should hire a trustworthy professional. Hope this will help.

Top 5 Christmas Light Colors of the Holiday Season

Christmas is a great time for getting together with family, decorating and enjoying the holiday season. Decorating your home (both inside and out) has become a popular family tradition and many households spend countless hours and unlimited amounts of money making their homes look great for the holidays.

If you’re thinking of decorating your home this season but aren’t quite sure what will look nice, you may want to check out our list of the top 5 most popular Christmas light colors of the season. The colors you choose will have the greatest impact on the overall look of your home, so make sure you choose carefully.

Here are the top 5 Christmas light colors this year:

1. Red. Obviously red is going to be a popular color at Christmas time. You can’t go wrong by choosing red Christmas lights but you’ll probably want to mix the red lights with another color. Too much red will make your house look too bright and too tacky. Adding one more color (preferably green or clear) will enhance the red lights and make your home look holiday ready in no time.

2. Green. Much like red Christmas lights, green Christmas lights have always been and will always be a popular choice for this season. Also similar to the red, green lights should be paired with a complimentary color so that your home doesn’t look too overdone with green lights. Once again, pairing the green with red lights or clear lights will be the perfect touch for your holiday style.

3. Clear. Clear Christmas lights (or white lights as some prefer to call them) are a classic and simple way to make your home look seasonal and elegant. Clear lights look fantastic on their own but can also be paired with any other color (green, red, blue, gold, purple and multi-colored) to spice up the look.

4. Blue. Blue Christmas lights are quickly becoming one of the most popular decorative themes of the holiday season. While blue doesn’t typically represent Christmas in any specific manner (like red or green), these lights are a great way to make your home look sophisticated and seasonal. Pair the blue lights with either clear or gold lights for an even more extravagant look that will knock your neighbour’s socks off.

5. Gold. Gold is a traditional Christmas color that exudes elegance and sophistication. Gold Christmas lights are no different. If you want to give your home a classic, traditional Christmas feel without going over the top, gold lights are the perfect choice. If you think too much gold is tacky, we suggest pairing them with either blue, clear or red lights.

We hope our holiday tips have helped you through your decorating decisions. And remember, decorating your home lets your neighbours know that you and your family embrace the Christmas spirit. Hopefully your neighbours will spread a little holiday cheer of their own.
