The Three V’s Of Communication Plus One

Making sure the message is received in any communication is vital. To insure the message is received, use of the three V’s of communication is often emphasized by experts. The 3 V’s are supported in a study of presentations by Albert Mehrabian, in which it was found that 55% of communicated information taken-in by the intended audience is visual, 7% is the verbal or text portion, and 38% is from the vocal speech of the presenter. These means that a lot of planning needs to go into a communication to insure the message intended is what is received. Below are some ideas on using the standard 3 V’s of communication, plus another to indicate the value that the receiver should get from the communication.

  • VERBAL – When it comes to what to say, the often used phrase of “keep it simple” is highly relevant for the speaker or writer. Words said or written in a communication must be limited, concise, and easily understood by the audience. Use of jargon or special terms should not occur unless the audience is specialized and familiar with the terms. Terms should then be defined to make sure everyone who hears or reads the message knows the meaning. Plan the topic, outline the message, be precise as possible, then consider the audience and make revisions to text as necessary.
  • VOCAL – Ever hear a parent say “it’s not what you said; it’s how you said it?” This statement is true in that it refers to the vocal message sent by the tone, volume, and speed of the spoken word. Tone is the pitch used in speech, the emotions generated or the words emphasized. Volume has to do with loudness or intensity of voice. What is emphasized, where are pauses, are whispers used to indicate confidentially? Fast speed can indicate excitement whereas slow can lead to audience boredom. Vocal changes in speech are easy. How can vocal elements be accomplished in written text? Tone and volume can be mimicked by using all capital letters to imply shouting, bold or underline is used for emphasis, and of course there is the exclamation point for excitement and enthusiasm. Pauses in speed may be indicated with ellipsis (…) or a dash (-).
  • VISUAL – The old quote “a picture is worth a thousand words” may not be totally accurate, but it does present a valid point. People remember more of what they see than what they hear. Spoken communications should involve this sense by use of body language, facial expressions, gestures, and words that paint a picture in the audience’s mind. Written documents, handout, or slide presentation can do this more visually utilizing graphic images, photographs, and charts.
  • VALUE – Belief in the message by using WIIFM statements are a big key in any communication. People want to know “what’s in it for me?” All communications should explain what the effect on the audience will be, as well as why and when they should care about what is being communicated.

Make sure the vital message in a communication is received by using the three V’s of communication plus the value V. Remember to put some planning into the communication in order to utilize visuals that will enhance the vocal and verbal portions of the communication.

Lamb Recipes: Spicy Lamb Curry & Butternut Bredie

Spicy Lamb Curry

This is based on a traditional Malay curry, not hot, but full of interesting flavours.

Ingredients

25ml oil

2-3 large onions, sliced

3 cloves garlic, crushed

15ml curry powder

10ml turmeric

10ml ground coriander

5ml ground cumin

1 stick cinnamon

1 knob root in ginger, peeled and crushed in garlic press

4 cardamom pods, split

2 bay leaves

3 whole cloves

1-1,2kg sliced shoulder of lamb

3 tomatoes, skinned and chopped

200ml hot water or stock
Method

Heat oil in large saucepan and brown onions. Add garlic, curry powder, turmeric, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom pods, bay leaves and cloves and fry for a few minutes, stirring and taking care not to scorch. Remove most of the fat from the lamb but do not slice off the bone. Add to pan and when coated with curry mixture add tomatoes and remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer very slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 1 hour 30 minutes, or until tender. You shouldn’t need to add more liquid, or have to thicken the rich gravy. Remove whole spices and serve with rice and sambals. Serves 4-5.

Note

Sambals range from diced pawpaw to poppadoms but the simplest (and most popular) are: desiccated coconut, chutney, cucumbers in yoghurt or sour cream, sliced bananas and sweet pickles.

People Should Drink Soup in a Healthy Way

Soup is a kind of common food in our daily life. The nutritional value of it is very high. What’s more, it is easy for people to digest and absorb the nutrients contained in soup. Many people think that drinking soup is very common and easy. In fact, it is necessary for people to drink soup in a healthy way, and thus the nutrients can be absorbed completely to improve the physical conditions for the human body.

The experts advise that people should drink soup before dinner. If the foods want to enter the stomach, they must pass the oral tract and the esophagus. If people drink soup before dinner, the soup can lubricate the alimentary canal and prevent the stimulation of mucous membrane of the alimentary canal caused by the hard foods. It is also beneficial for people to drink a little soup during the dinner, which can dilute the foods and improve the gastric and intestinal digestion and absorption of the foods. If people do not drink any soup before and during the dinner, the secretion of gastric juice can make the body fluid lose too much and cause the thirst. If people drink water at this moment, the gastric juice can be diluted to affect the digestion and absorption of the foods. Drinking soup before dinner is beneficial to the human health, but it does not mean that people should drink soup excessively. Generally speaking, people should drink less than a bowl of soup.

The temperature of soup should not be too high, as the human oral tract, esophagus and gastric mucosa can only bear 60 degrees. The high temperature can hurt the gastric mucosa. Therefore, the soup at less than 50 degrees is more suitable for people to drink. In addition, people should not boil the soup too long. The heating for a long time can destroy the vitamins like vitamin C contained in soup and decrease the nutritional value. Some people like to use the soup to soak rice. The experts do not agree with such a kind of eating way. It can decrease the normal functions of digestive system and even cause the gastric diseases. When the soup is mixed with the rice, the rice can not be chewed completely before it enters the stomach. In addition, the gustatory nerves can not be stimulated adequately. Because of the diluted digestive juice, the foods can not be digested well and the gastric diseases can be finally caused.

A Short History of Drawer Construction – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!

There are many ways to make a drawer, however, not all drawers are created equal. If you’re buying furniture or cabinets you should read this before spending your hard earned money.

Drawer Joints in order of Strength

Dovetails

The very best drawers are made with English Dovetails front and back. There are two types of dovetail joints. First, classic English, visible from side of drawer dovetails second, hidden also known as blind French Dovetails (slide up from bottom”. What distinguishes this joint is when pulling pressure is applied to drawer front it tends to get tighter because the male part of joint fitted into drawer front is not parallel and gets tighter with pressure.

Box Joints

Can be a very effect joint when made with care to use close tolerances. Similar in appearance to the dovetail except the sides of the joint is parallel.

Tongue and Groove

Similar to a Blind French dovetail but open on one side. This joint is easier to make, however not as strong as the above type of joints.

Butt Joint

The Butt joint is simply the drawer side lined up with the drawer front and backs and fastened in some manner of glue, nails, staples, screws, or cam fasteners (Ikea type self assembly). Not generally considered a good joint unless securely assembled with glue and pressure applied while glue sets. Many pieced considered folk art or primitive pieces use this simple method of drawer construction.

Glue makes the Difference

Proper use of the right kind and appropriate application of glue can mitigate many joint shortcomings. Today’s glues are far stronger and longer lasting than old-fashioned adhesives. Most glue needs consistent pressure of some clamping method for glued joints to achieve maximum strength. Without that pressure, 90% of strength can be lost. That pressure can be achieved using either clamps or stables to hold joint firm until the glue has set. Staples alone are essentially no joints at all.

Drawer Systems

Oh My God, Thousands of different systems to open and close a drawer!

Before the 1940’s, virtually all drawers no matter what quality were simply slid into an opening in a supporting structure. That supporting structure or case sometimes had a panel between the drawers to prevent dust from being drawn into the cabinet from the suction created by opening the drawer or dust created by the action of wood rubbing against wood. This is a very difficult way to fit a drawer requiring hand fitting of the drawer box into the case, and often resulting in sticking in wet weather.

To save time in production a wood center guide system was invented. Better quality production would use the bottom of the drawer above to keep the drawer from dropping and some hand fitting was still required get a smoothly opening drawer. The center guide system allows a gap between the drawer box and case side and centering of the gap. This reduces the labor by a large factor.

In the 1960’s a new system was invented that put a plastic clip on the back of the drawer to keep the from dropping down. The plastic would slide smoothly but it had one big problem. The problem was the plastic would deteriorate and with time, any downward pressure would snap the glide.

The next innovation was the European style side capturing roller systems. These systems have a lot of advantages. When properly installed, they will give years of trouble free operation. They work with a double nylon wheel system that interlocks and rolls in a track. The innovation that speeds installation production is the wheel is captured in the track only on one side giving a leeway of about 1/8″ on the other side.

About the same time, the “Ball Bearing Systems” came on line. These are the best type of slide with weight capacities of up to 100’s of pounds. Upgrades available on these types of slides include earthquake stops, full pull out up to 110%, side or hidden under mount, and soft or self-closing drawers.

Warning – Becoming a Trustee Can Seriously Damage Your Wealth

This is a true story that happened in Aotearoa (New Zealand), with its roots stretching back to the 50’s.

In the 1950’s, two totally independent occurrences took place. At the time, nobody would have foreseen how these two isolated events would intertwine with such power and passion into the next century.

The first event took place around Christmastime, 1953, in a small town in Aeoteora, where a son called Charles Hohepa was born to a well-respected Maori family, who had been Chiefs since time immemorial. In fact, when Charles’s great grandfather died in 1907, thousands of Maori were in mourning, such was the respect for the Hohepa iwi.

The second event took place some 6 years later, in Auckland, where Reverend William Antaeus Bloomfield and his wife Aldyth Isabel Bloomfield, set up the Peoples Worship in Freedom (PWF) Mission, as an Outreach//First Aid Post facility to pick up people who were in crisis, or facing potential crisis or were victims of casualty and crisis situations.

Reverend Bloomfield had very definite ideas on how his Mission should be operated. It was not set up as a ‘church’ per say, but an organisation that although following Christian beliefs, would go out into the community, and try and rescue people who had fallen off the tracks, and would not necessarily respond to the more formal approach of an established church environment.

So successful was he in his Mission, that by the early 60’s, the Reverend Bloomfield had managed (by selling one brick at a time to his supporters), to raise a deposit to enable him to purchase the small house he was using as his base in Auckland. Within three years he had also managed to pay off the mortgage completely.

Also, due to his good works, his Mission was chosen to help with the then young Queen Elizabeth on her visit in 1963.

However, towards the end of the ’70’s a number of the congregation were being wooed by another religion group, the ‘Jesus Only’ cult, popular in The States at that time. Now, one of the planks of the Rev Bloomfield’s successes was his ability to appeal to anybody in a distressed state, regardless of race, creed, colour, or religion.

There then started a series of infighting between the original Trustees of the PWF Mission, and this alternative group, which eventually formed itself into the Eden Refuge Mission, and this feud was to continue up to the present day.

Following the death of Reverend Bloomfield in 1973, this rival group used just about any form of underhand, and in some cases, violent ways to achieve their aims. Hardly the manner in which a supposed caring group should operate. However, the remaining Trustees stood firm to the original concepts of the PWF Mission.

In 1984, the two original 50’s based occurrences came together, as it was in this year that the then young Chief Charles Hohepa, who had been a regular follower of the PWF Mission, was invited by the surviving Trustees to join them on the Board. The surviving Trustees needed more understanding of the legal processes, as the Eden Refuge Trust was now beginning to use every available trick it could conjure up, in an attempt to wrest the PWF Mission’s assets, and direction, from the original Mission.

This began a struggle by Chief Charles to maintain and uphold the original wishes of the Mission, which was to last for over 25 more years.

To paint a picture of the opposition to the PWF, at one Sunday meeting, a newly elected Pastor, Pastor Ray Crossland, was forcibly removed from the pulpit by the leaders of the Eden Refuge Group, and on many occasions, staunch followers of the PWF Mission were manhandled out of the building.

At one point, in 1985, Chief Charles, now the sole remaining Trustee for the PWF, had the locks changed on the building. Some weeks later, the leaders of the Eden Refuge Trust smashed their way into the building, and changed the locks. Chief Charles summoned the local police, who when shown the Chief’s authorisation as sole trustee, had the Eden people evicted under duress of trespass.

So began a vigil by one man for many years, to keep the faith as the sole remaining Trustee with the original aims of the PWF Mission, in the face of overwhelming aggravation. Many other men would have walked away from such a situation, but Chief Charles stood resolutely firm.

However, by early 2000 it became apparent that the only real way to overcome this continuous harassment of the PWF and its loyal congregation, was to dispose of the building entirely, and look for bigger, more suitable premises.

After a lot more legal hassle, when the Eden Trust tried to issue caveats on the building, Chief Charles succeeded in disposing of this now dilapidated and condemned building for just NZ$350,000 in 2002. As the original building had become far too small, as well as being condemned by the local council due to underpinning issues, and there was insufficient funds from the sale proceeds, the idea of Chief Charles was to take the small proceeds of the sale, sign a Bond of Debt to the Trustees, and he invested these funds in a European venture. This was to enable him to acquire sufficient funds so that new, bigger and more suitable premises could be found. This would also totally distance the PWF from the ambitions of the Eden Refuge Trust whose owner now included a string of Night Clubs in their portfolio.

Problem solved…? Read on.

Because of The Chief’s very apparent strength of character, in 2008 he was elected to be the Executive Director of Resource Mobilisation of a UN-recognised non-governmental organisation, the World For World Organisation. Here, Chief Charles was in control of massive humanitarian funds.

Likewise, in 2006, while Chief Charles was living in Spain, the Maori Confederation of Chiefs bestowed on him the greatest honour of the Maori nation – he was selected to be the first Sovereign Mandate – the Sole Protector of the Maori nation.

At about the same time, because there were still rumblings from the Eden Refuge Trust, an 18 page Affidavit was written by The Chief, and witnessed at the New Zealand Embassy in Madrid, as a complete audit as to what had happened while The Chief was Trustee at the PWF Mission. Interestingly that the people running the Word For World Organisation, and the Confederation of Chiefs were all fully aware of Chief Charles’s struggle, and in spite of the rumours, they still elected him to high office in their organisations.

Imagine the surprise therefore, when the Eden Refuge Trust, purporting to be representing the PWF, took out a Court case against Chief Charles in 2006.

A clear cut case of ‘no case to answer?’ Yes, if the evidence as stated in The Chief’s Affidavit had been accepted by the Court. And also, if The Chief, who by now was suffering very poor health, had been permitted to present his case by video link.

So, some big questions must be asked now.

How was it that none of The Chief’s evidence was admitted to the Court, resulting in him being found guilty of all of the trumped up charges brought about by the Eden Refuge Trust?

The story does not end here, and justice – unpolluted and unbiased – with all the relevant facts, will prevail.

The warning is very stark. If you are the sort of person that will not be swayed against your moral convictions, then being a Trustee can indeed seriously damage your wealth.

Annuity or 529 Plan

Being in the financial industry for about a decade and a half now I have from time to time come across a number of these self proclaimed “gurus” who tout annuities as a vehicle for college tuition saving in lieu of a 529 plan. This concept is marketed to insurance agents as a sales tool to increase business with a flock of new clients and promises commissions beyond their wildest dreams. Now, let’s take a moment to look at this premise and the pros and cons. An annuity basically is a financial contract designed to accept and grow funds from an individual and pay out a series of payments at a later date. There are a variety of different annuity products out there depending on what your particular needs are that can be very accommodating, but in the interest of time we’ll look at the basic concepts and comparison of annuities, 529 plans and Education Savings Accounts.

Annuities grow on a tax deferred basis however there is a surrender charge, which is a ten percent fee if there is a withdrawal made early. Typically the surrender charge decreases each year over a specified number of years. There are “no surrender annuities” which allow you to withdraw your interest earnings or up to 15% per year without a penalty although any withdrawal from an annuity may be subject to taxes. At fifty nine and a half you may take withdrawals with out a ten percent surrender charge and those withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income. If you withdraw prior to fifty nine and a half, one worst case scenario could be over 40% of your earnings going back to the federal government.

A 529 college savings plan could allow for contributions over $300k depending on the plan however contributions are gifts, so the $13k annual gift limit should be observed. Qualified distributions can be taken without federal income tax or penalty for tuition, books, fees, supplies, room and board, etc…Withdrawals used for expenses other than qualified education costs may be subject to federal and state taxes plus a ten percent penalty. Anyone who plans to attend an eligible postsecondary educational institution can be the beneficiary of a 529 plan. Investments into a 529 savings plan enjoy tax deferred compounding and there are no limitations on the age or income of the owner or beneficiary.

Finally, Education Savings Accounts or ESA’s can be used to pay qualified education expenses for a student in an accredited primary, secondary or post secondary vocational school. 529 assets can only be used to cover qualified higher education expenses. You can contribute $2,000.00 per year in all ESA’s for one beneficiary, however ESA’s offer a wider choice of investments than a 529 plan. ESA and 529 assets are treated as the owners therefor these assets have minimal impact on federal financial aid if the parent is the owner. However, if the child is the owner, the assets are included in the federal financial aid calculation.

An annuity is not likely to be a strong choice for most parents however there’s a small percentage of parents out there that may want to give it a second glanse. Parents who will be over the age of fifty nine and a half by the time their child starts college and who also expect to be in a moderately low tax bracket during the college years may want to put some thought into it. Comparing apples to apples, a 529 plan or an ESA is most likely your best bet to prepare for your child’s educational costs rather than an annuity. If you have a child or grandchild who is planning to attend college, I would recommend you sit down with a qualified financial planner to determine which financial choice is best for you.

My Canon Digital Camera Says "Memory Card Error" – Help!

Many people are asking about their camera displaying them a Memory Card Error message. If you have this kind of problem, don’t worry, because this are frequently problem asked among photographers. Just remember that if this things happen, just do not format the card and do not take any more pictures on it. You should know that your photos are still intact on your memory card, therefore taking more pictures will also writes over the old ones.

So what should we do if you really need to get the pictures off even though your card is possibly corrupt? Here is the few thing to fixed the problem:

First, check your camera maker’s website and see if your recent SDHC card may not work with your older camera. Therefore you probably will need to change your memory card to standard SD cards only (usually those 2GB or less).

Second, you can formatting your card in the camera to correct the problems, but remember formatting the card in the camera will also erase all photos on the card.

Third, make sure that you didn’t accidentally place the tiny locking slide switch on the side of your SD card in the “locked” downward position. The correct “unlocked” position should be slid up toward the direction of the connectors.

There are several additional troubleshooting items to check for the problems of “memory Card locked” or “memory card error”. The important thing to remember is don’t format if you need the pictures and you should receive a message that says, “no images” or “no data” if your Canon was correctly formatted.

Male Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery – The Physical Examination

Male revision rhinoplasty surgery is the most difficult and challenging procedure that facial plastic surgeons perform. Perfecting surgery with the three dimensional nose takes years to improve and maybe master. In rhinoplasty surgery, minor rhinoplasty maneuvers that we do today may lead to significant postoperative deformities three years from now. Many of us are taught that aggressive cartilage removal is a procedure of the past. Today’s concept is “less is more”. Less cartilage excision, cartilage repositioning, camouflage techniques, structural grafting and suturing techniques are being taught in most residencies and fellowships and at our national meetings. When primary rhinoplasties are performed, the need for a future revision rhinoplasty is becoming increasingly common. Generally, revision rhinoplasty in males are more complex than females because males may have higher or unrealistic expectations and often, thick nasal skin, which is more difficult to re-support the nasal tip than in thin nasal skin.

In male primary rhinoplasty surgery, the key to prevention of complications is pre-diagnosis of potential anatomical and functional abnormalities. For example, a patient desires a dorsal hump reduction and you identify short nasal bones, thick skin and a long middle vault. Your thorough evaluation will warn you that this patient is at risk for upper lateral cartilage subluxation from the nasal bones (inverted-V deformity) and internal valve collapse following osteotomies.

For male revision rhinoplasty patients, initially perform a detailed anatomic and functional evaluation of the nose followed by documentation of the postoperative nasal deformities that are present and sites of nasal obstruction. After the problems and potential complications are identified, create a general surgical plan while studying the preoperative photographs and prepare to use everything in your surgical armamentarium since your preoperative plans for revision nasal surgery will usually change during surgery.

Below is my algorithm for a revision rhinoplasty consultation. When the appointment is made, the patient is asked to bring a copy of their medical records and operative reports from their rhinoplasty surgery or surgeries, in addition to photographs of their native nose. Review the notes and photos while the prospective patient is discussing surgery with your patient care coordinator. This will give you a head start on identifying the problems assuming that a problem exists. Next, a detailed history is performed while listening very carefully to the patient’s wishes. Does he have realistic expectations? This is by far the most important detail that the astute surgeon needs to attain from the history. What is the patient unhappy with – a pinched tip or polly-beak deformity?

Additionally, listen to the patient and see if negative comments are made or if the patient is seeking litigation against the prior surgeon. If this is the scenario, you may want to think twice prior to performing a revision rhinoplasty on this patient. If the male patient is not happy with the results of his surgery by you, there is a good chance that he will be saying unkind words about you in the subsequent surgeon’s office. Does he fit the SIMON profile (Single, Immature, Male, Obsessive, and Narcissistic)? If so, watch out since these patients are very difficult to please and are litiginous. During the initial five minutes of your history, the astute surgeon should know if the patient is a good candidate for revision surgery. Poor patient selection can lead to an unhappy patient and surgeon.

Another important detail is to ascertain if the patient has nasal obstruction. The incidence of postoperative nasal obstruction following a primary rhinoplasty is approximately 10%.1 Determine if the nasal obstruction was present preoperatively. If the obstruction is a result of the surgery, a number of questions need to be answered. Did the patient have reductive rhinoplasty surgery? Have the patient point out where the obstruction is. Is it static or dynamic? Present with normal or deep inspiration? What alleviates and worsens the nasal obstruction? What are the characteristics of the nasal obstruction? Was septal surgery performed? The physical examination ensues.

For the physical exam, I use a detailed nasal analysis worksheet Perform a detailed visual and tactile evaluation of the nose. Use an ungloved finger to palpate the nose. Examine the bony and cartilaginous skeleton, tip and skin-soft tissue envelope characteristics in frontal, oblique, lateral and base views. For the bony dorsum, examine the osteotomies, presence of open roof deformity or rocker deformity, and hump under- or over- resection. If inadequate hump reduction is in question, first examine for a deep radix and/or under-projected, ptotic nasal tip and for microgenia.

Look for middle vault abnormalities such as a narrow middle vault, inverted-V deformity or under-resection of the cartilaginous dorsum (polly-beak deformity). For the tip, examine tip projection, rotation, support, alar and columellar retraction, over-aggressive alar base reduction, and lower lateral crural characteristics such as over-resection, cephalically oriented or bossa formation. Over-resection of the lower lateral cartilage complex in males with a heavy sebaceous skin-soft tissue envelope can cause tip ptosis and subsequent, nasal obstruction. A deviated cartilaginous dorsum and tip can signify a deviated septum. This is only a partial list of anatomical problems that the surgeon needs to identify in nasal analysis.

For male patients with nasal obstruction, observe him performing normal and deep inspiration on frontal and basal views. Often, the diagnosis is easily identifiable as supra-alar, alar and/or rim collapse (slit-like nostrils) during static or dynamic states. External valve collapse (lower lateral cartilage pathology) can be evaluated with the soft end of a cotton swab while plugging the contra-lateral nostril. The cotton swab elevates the area of obstruction whether it’s the alar rim, lower lateral crura or supra-alar region. See if the nasal obstruction is alleviated by elevating the nasal tip in patients with ptosis of the nasal tip. Perform the Cottle maneuver (pulling laterally on the cheek) to check for internal valve collapse. Although this test is generally non-specific, internal nasal valve pathology caused by supra-alar pinching or a narrowed angle between the upper lateral cartilage and septum can be diagnosed. On basal view, examine the medial crura feet to identify if they are impinging into the nasal airway.

Following a thorough external nasal evaluation, the endonasal examination ensues. At minimum, perform anterior rhinoscopy with and without topical decongestion. In certain cases, nasal endoscopy and rhinomanometry may be useful. Evaluate the nasal septum for perforations, persistent deviation and for any remaining cartilaginous remnants to be used for grafting. Other causes of nasal obstruction to identify are: hypertrophic inferior turbinates, synechiae between the lateral nasal wall and septum, nasal masses and middle turbinate abnormalities (concha bullosa).

As you are examining the patient, create a mental problem list with solutions followed by documentation on your nasal analysis sheet, such as: 1. external valve collapse secondary to over-resected lower lateral crura with a plan of open rhinoplasty with alar batten grafts using conchal cartilage, 2. internal nasal valve collapse secondary to a narrow middle vault and supra-alar pinching with moderate inspiration with a plan of bilateral spreader grafts and supra-alar batten grafts using conchal cartilage, and 3. bilateral alar retraction with a plan of bilateral conchal composite grafts. If structural grafting is necessary, decide what material may be used. A thorough knowledge of the types of autologous (septal, conchal, costal cartilage, deep temporalis fascia, and calvarium) or alloplastic grafting is needed as well as harvesting techniques.

This is only an initial plan as you are creating your algorithm. Guaranteed, it will change as you get closer to surgery. Computer morphing can be extremely useful if patients are notified that the final image is not a guarantee of results. However, despite proper notification and consent, there have been reports of lawsuits filed by patients for outcomes that are different than what was generated by the computer imager. Computer imaging can give clues to the patient’s expectations. Unrealistic expectations can be identified when a conservative image is generated by the surgeon and the patient desires a radical change. Therefore, computer imaging can be a powerful tool in evaluating patients for surgery. I can’t count the number of times that I have rejected male patients for primary and revision surgery secondary to them having unrealistic expectations only being identified by the computer morphing. An additional use for the computer image is to use it as a goal in surgery. Bring the preoperative and computer imaging photos to the operating room.

Introducing: SAP ASE Edge Edition – Retiring Sybase ASE SBE

This might be the biggest announcement from SAP you never heard of. After dropping the name Sybase from its product names last year, SAP is quietly reshaping its database platform offerings. And I mean this in a good way.

Under the Sybase name there were 2 ASE products; Sybase ASE Enterprise Edition (EE) and Sybase ASE Small Business Edition (SBE). The Sybase ASE EE product was and still is the flagship and the most commonly known edition of Sybase. But it came with a hefty price ticket. To offer a Sybase ASE database server to the SMB market space, Sybase created ASE SBE, limited to 2 CPU sockets and 8 engines on a physical server, at a very low price.

The server virtualization revolution has dramatically changed the server landscape and database servers made their transitions to the new world. The majority of newly deployed database servers are virtualized, either on premise or in the cloud. The Sybase ASE EE 15.7 database server enabled Sybase clients to make the move to the virtual servers with the introduction of the threaded kernel model. SAP ASE EE 16 continued the optimization for virtual servers and offers one of the most advanced database servers in the market.

However, Sybase ASE SBE never made the step into the virtual world and that was bad news for SMB, who are trying to save money on infrastructure costs. Hence the introduction of SAP ASE Edge Edition.

SAP ASE Edge Edition will retire the old Sybase ASE SBE. It is based on the SAP ASE EE 16 edition with a limit of 4 cores. Other than that, SAP pulled out the stops and created an entry level ASE server that packs features that other databases only offer in their enterprise edition, but set a price point that competes with other vendor’s standard edition database.

The following matrix shows the comparison between SAP ASE Edge Edition and Sybase ASE SBE. But pay close attention to the options that are now included and compare this to other vendors standard offerings.

Factors To Consider In Setting Up A Retail Business

Experience and knowledge of the business in mind is one of the factors to consider in setting up a retail business. Lack of such expertise may lower the success rate of the business as you would not be able to cope with the problems peculiar to that branch of retailing. Therefore, it pays to work as an employee first. The branch of retailing contemplated is another factor to be considered.

You have to bear in mind whether your financial sources are adequate and whether you know enough about the business. For example, to set up a coffee-house you may need something like $200,000 where as to set up a small eating stall you may only need $2000. On the other hand, there are some other factors to be considered as well and they are numerous in numbers such as, location of premises, adequacy of capital, sources of supply of goods, the law of comparative advantage and at last laws and regulations.

To decide on location of premises or on a particular area, for example; in the city centre or in any housing estate or even on which side of the street to set up a shop and for that you have to bear in mind factors such as:

• The “demand” for your product. For example, if you are contemplating opening a jewellery shop, it would be more profitable to have one in the town. The market is much bigger since people from the suburbs and city would converge there.

• The “competition” from shops selling similar goods. Normally, it would be wiser to keep away from areas where there is competition unless you can offer a better service at lower prices, or unless the demand is likely to expand in the near future.

Rents in the town would certainly be higher than in the suburbs. If you intend to buy the premises instead of renting it, then you would certainly need more capital. If you do not have the necessary capital, you can raise it through friends, relatives, banks or other financial institutions. Examples, finance companies.

It is the important that you are able to know which wholesalers to go to. Some may give better discounts and others may give longer credit. The law of comparative advantage is more profitable to remain in your present job earning your monthly salary plus interest from the savings you have accumulated? Remember, that if you become a retailer you have to forgo your salary and interest on your savings. So your net profit from retailing must be greater than sum forgone.

Laws and regulations is another factor to be considered in setting a retailing business. You should make a study of the commercial laws regarding the line of retailing you want to go into. Must you get a license? Can you trade in the goods specified and in the place selected by you?

Basic Start To Breeding Cockatiels

The best way to start would be to eliminate all obstacles possible. Such as making sure you have a pair of cockatiels (male & female). Once establishing this the next thing is the cage. The standard breeding cage is 24″ X 24″ X 18″ with the nest box either inserted with back access door to the front of cage, or attached to the outside of cage.

The nest box is important it can be various sizes, we use a nest that is about 8 wide x 10 deep x 12 high, and I have used smaller and larger. For very nervous pairs I use an angled very deep box and often paint the inside black or a dark color. This covers up the knots in the plywood and other imperfections in the wood that could be shadowy or look to the hen as though there were something else in her box besides herself, her mate, eggs, and or chicks. When I lived in Palm Beach, Florida I visited Loxahatchee where they were studying with painted or not painted nest boxes (inside) and it was observed time and again the birds with the painted inside boxes were much more relaxed, and produced better verses the ones that had unpainted plywood. Of course the paint must be safe, we have found and recommend, if on the can label it says safe for human baby furniture when dry it is safe.

Also keep in mind the placement of the entrance hole (about 3 to 4 inches across) to the nesting box should be high on the box. So not to allow eggs or babies to fall out. It is also best to have the inspection door to the back or side of the nesting box verses the top. Top doors cause the birds to get more nervous because they feel trapped and can not get out through the hole without you hovering over them, and this often causes them to bare down on the eggs and babies, or even thrashing around in the box because you have scared them unintentionally causing them to crack eggs and or harm to their own chicks. With a back or side inspection door they seem to get out through the hole much easier, calmer, and safer for all. Of course there are always exceptions, I have a few hens that won’t budge for anything (very devoted) I actually have to reach in and lift them up to see their eggs and or chicks, then gently place them back down, and they act as if nothing has happened. * Please note not to try this first, and keep cards on your birds so that you will know your birds better, and even come to know which ones will do what consistently. Such as in the case of fostering eggs and or chicks some will only take chicks and or eggs if they are at the same stage and age of their own eggs and or chicks. Some pairs will not foster at all, these are the things you need to keep track of so when you might need to do this you will know which pair will foster and not have to leave it to chance.

I have one pair that are the exception to the rule, put a baby cockatiel or cockatoo in their nesting box and no matter what else they have going on chicks of their own or not, they will feed and care for it. I love that pair!

Another thing I always do so not to alarm my birds, is talk to them as I walk up, and I tap lightly on the box (I say the same thing everyday when inspecting, they know it’s me, and know exactly what I am about to do). I try to inspect boxes at the same time when ever I am inspecting and not at random. I almost always feed at the same time everyday, some birds get fed two and three times a day if they are feeding chicks. This makes the meals they feed their chicks fresh. Just because they have food in the bowl at the time you check and they have chicks doesn’t always mean that is what they will feed their chicks. Feed extra stuff, feed a variety, feed things they might not normally eat, often they will when having chicks eat things they usually don’t at other times. If there is a certain seed or food they have completely eaten but not eaten the rest replace it anyway or you could loose chicks. Because to them they didn’t feel it was adequate for there family to survive on. This is definitely not the time to force your pair to eat everything on there plate before you replace or add what they are looking for. In the wild often chicks are allowed to die because of a shortage of food, if the parents can see there is not enough food to successfully raise all four babies then they will only raise the strongest of the clutch. It seems cruel but this is natures way, and for the species it is better for one or two to survive than if the parents stretched the little food they could find, weakening all the chicks, that leads to all of there chicks not surviving.

I feel time is very important to them and feeding them at random is so unfair, (don’t you want to know when you will be eating, and how about those that get forgotten until the next day)? If you want to breed successfully be constant and they will produce well. In the wild they go for years sometimes without breeding and producing, because due to a food shortage they know they can not successfully raise a family so they don’t.

You should have a nice three inches or so of pine shavings in the bottom of the nest box. Don’t use cedar chips or cedar shavings, because the oils of the cedar are naturally strong scented, and can burn tiny developing lungs. Stay away from shavings that came from a mill that may have lead paint chips, metal fragments from nicked nails, and even toxins from pressure treated wood mixed in with these wood shavings.

The placement of the perch is very important, first of all do not place the perch over the food or water bowls, for sanitary reasons. The perch must be secure, not loose, and wobbly. Because cockatiels breed by mounting you need to make sure there is sufficient room to do that. They don’t necessarily always breed on the perch, but again if your pair chooses too they can. You wouldn’t want a loose or unstable perch to be the cause of infertile eggs.

When feeding your pair it is important to remember if you want them to be successful at raising a family you must provide, (not what’s adequate) an abundance of food. In the wild cockatiels go for long periods of time not raising young. Due to insufficient food, drout, or bad weather conditions, I can not stress this enough.

Many books recommend hard boiled eggs chopped finely and offered to the birds, the problem with that is it can become rancid and reach toxic levels in a very short time. We suggest making a corn bread with extra eggs, and if it’s in hot weather substitute the milk for orange juice, which will be much less likely to spoil. Some birds like just plain bread, just remember to remove and discard soft foods even if all is not eaten, and provide fresh. Fresh water daily is very important, and if you use water bottles change them daily as well. Would you want to drink water left sitting out since yesterday, just because it looks clean? Those of us that took chemistry and or dabbled with the microscopes can tell you that even clear looking water, that has been sitting warming especially on a summer day, is not what it seems. Put under a scope and all those little friendly critters in that water (that weren’t there several hours ago) will be waving back at you, any body thirsty? So change that water!

Cockatiels are grain eaters, but I have found I can sneak things they won’t eat normally into the corn bread, after blending it in the blender. A good seed diet, spray millet, even things like wheat checks, rice checks, puffed wheat, etc., are all relished by cockatiels. And I have never met a cockatiel that didn’t love popcorn.

Some people like to recycle food, we do not do this. To start with, it’s not sanitary if you have more than one pair, your spreading germs. And if you have one bird that gets ill rest assured it will spread to many of your birds on that recycled food.

As the pair of Cockatiels start to show interest in the nest it is usually the male that enters the nest first. He will inspect it and move the wood chips around to his liking, in hopes that it will be an appealing place to his mate as well. When he feels he has achieved this he will begin to court the hen he will sing to her and as the hens often seem to ignore her suitor, he will of course try harder. He’ll sing in her face, he will bill beat his beak to make a knocking sound inside and out of the nest. When she does show interest (it doesn’t always happen right away) and they mate it will take two or more weeks to lay an egg, provided everything is to their liking. Keep in mind they can only work with what we have provided them as there comforts of home, and some times they don’t breed because they feel something vital is missing.

I always love hearing things like: There a proven pair and I’m not getting any eggs or babies. That’s when I usually notice something like lack of a good diet, no extras to stimulate them into thinking they have enough food to raise a family or the nest box is in a bad placement or worse on the floor. What gives, the birds can’t get out and get these things right themselves, you must provide a proper situation for them. I would rather do more for a pair then needed, then too possibly leave something out that could prevent them from raising.

Once the hen starts to lay she will brood in the box in advance of laying her first egg, and once she does lay it will be every other day until she has completed her clutch (a group of eggs, that will basically be her litter). The average clutch is about 4 to 8 eggs, but we have had many a hen far pass that, and I don’t mean double clutching (starting a second clutch of eggs on top of the first, or right after the first) some hens are just extraordinary.

Depending on whether the pair starts incubating with the first egg or wait for the second to start brooding, and some even wait until they have laid the whole clutch. So you can see where incubation time can vary drastically, from 18 days if they start with the first egg to 24 days or more. Or even if the pair gets off the nest more often then most this will and can lengthen the incubation time. So don’t just up and throw those eggs out, at least candle them first. One lady called me recently for advise, she had her first pair of Cockatiels lay eggs and was told they would not be good so through them out. I was horrified, I’ll admit often they aren’t, but what if this time there are good at least wait and find out. Incidentally the eggs the lady had were good and even hatched and the inexperienced pair raised quite a nice family! Sometimes you can expect the unexpected, other times it is a waiting game, things can just plain take time.

As the pair incubate there eggs, you will most likely if all is going well see the hen sitting the eggs after she has laid her clutch at night, where as the male will sit during the day. Sometimes they will both be in there brooding the eggs and keeping each other company. Each pair is individual and can vary on how they do things, but they all follow the same procedure some what. In other words we humans generally carry our children 9 months, and most often have them in a hospital, and that is all considered normal. Use that as a guide reality check, cause we whom have not experience having babies in a cab, on the freeway, or on the way to the hospital, at least have a general idea that this could happen. As is the case with some birds, expect the unexpected, and be prepared for everything as best you can.
