If you work for yourself and make or buy items for resale, according to current IRS rules you have inventory expenses to report. Every business owner is required to report those expenses on the back of their Schedule C tax form because inventory costs are not deducted in the same manner as other normal business expenses.

Because of this, the IRS requires that every business, no matter how small, track inventory expenses separate from all other business costs. Your inventory expenses not only includes the cost you pay for those resale items, or all of the pieces needed to assemble the items, but it also includes all shipping charges and wages paid for assembly.

You are not allowed to deduct inventory expenses until an item is sold or otherwise permanently removed from your business inventory. All unsold inventory costs must be carried forward into the following tax year. Unsold inventory includes everything you have not sold, traded, trashed, given away or donated. It also includes all inventory items sitting in stores and warehouses that have been sold on consignment.

There is a small section on the back of the Schedule C small business tax form where you fill in the value of your opening inventory, the cost of all inventory added during the current tax year, any inventory removed for personal use, and your end of year inventory value.

For IRS inventory records that will survive a tax audit I have devised a formula called LATER – List, Account, Total, Evaluate and Report. Here’s how it works:

LIST – Write down all items purchased for resale as those items arrive. Make a simple six vertical column chart on lined paper; I use a spiral notebook. Title those six columns as follows:

  • Item Name
  • Total Cost
  • Number of Sellable Items
  • Per Item Cost
  • Remaining Inventory
  • End of Year Value

Fill out the first three columns as items arrive. To get the per item cost divide the total cost of each item by the number of sellable items and write that amount in column four. You will fill in the last two columns on the last business day of the tax year.

ACCOUNT – On the last day of the tax year account for all unsold inventory; both on your shelves and out for sale on consignment. Enter this count for each item as remaining inventory.

TOTAL – Multiply your remaining inventory count by your per item cost for each item and enter that value in the final column. Total everything in the second and last columns. The first figure is the total spent to add merchandise and the second your end of year inventory value.

EVALUATE – Look over all remaining inventory to evaluate its quality and shelf life. Remove all unsellable merchandise to be trashed, donated or reserved for use in future promotions. Deduct the value of any inventory trashed or donated. Items used for future promotions will be deducted when used.

REPORT – On the back of your Schedule C tax form you will find a place to enter the total of all merchandise added and your end of year inventory. Add the tax year’s opening inventory and merchandise added together, and subtract your remaining inventory value to fill in the cost of goods sold.

This year’s end of year inventory value becomes the following tax year’s opening inventory value.

Handler- a position normally played by the stronger throwers on the team. (similar to the point guard position in basketball).

Huck- a long throw. each game starts off with a huck.

Layout- an impressive dive to catch a disc.

Layout D- an impressive dive to block the disc from the opponent.

O- offense.

Pick- when a player gets in-between a defender and the person they are defending (unlike basketball, picks are illegal in ultimate).

Pull- the long throw that begins each game/point. similar to a kickoff in football.

Sky- jumping higher than the people around you to catch a disc.

Stall Count- the 10 seconds you have to get a pass off.

Turn- when the disc drops to the ground or any other change of possession.

Up- an alert that the disc has been thrown in the air. a call usually directed towards the defense to look up to get the ‘D’.

Theatre’s and theatre life is filled with superstitions. In a theatre Shakespeare’s play Macbeth is always referred to as “That Scottish Play”. Mentioning or quoting lines from the play, especially in a dressing room is said to invoke the curse. Some of the more famous incidents include; a world war II production of the play with John Geilgud in which four actors died, an 1849 riot that broke out at a performance at Astor Place in New York where 31 people died, in 1947 a young actor playing Macbeth crawled off stage and died of a stab wound. It is reported that he failed to stop reciting lines in the dressing room.

The list of tragedies is lengthy and provocative. Laurence Olivier was nearly killed when he played Macbeth. A weight came tumbling down an crashed inches from him. On opening night of that production, the owner of the theatre had a heart attack and died. During the production the tip of Oliver’s sword broke off and hit an audience member who had a heart attack and died. Some believe that Shakespeare used an actual witch’s spell when writing the part of the witches. Others say he used real witches in the opening play. Others believe it is a play with a lot of fight scenes in dim light, making it a hazardous play to perform. Whatever the origin, superstitions exist and have taken on a life of their own.

How to Protect Curtain Walls From Damage During Construction and Shipping

Many new commercial construction projects are designed with large, glass curtain walls that are attached to the outside structure of buildings. These glass walls allow filtered natural light to enter the building interior as well as create a beautiful outside appearance. Another benefit of these wall systems is to increase fire spread between floors and to keep out air and water. Typically, a curtain wall spans more than one story and is composed of metal framing with infill units of glass. Unfortunately, these glass walls are often damaged during construction activity at considerable cost.

Curtain walls can be damaged during shipment to the job site, during installation and after installation while the remaining construction work takes place. There are several methods that manufacturers’ can use to protect the aluminum windows and mullions from damage for shipment. Protecta-foam strips can quickly be adhered to the metal surface and act as a protective barrier between stacked wall units. Reinforced cardboard edge protectors from 2.5 to 4.0 inches can be taped to all edges of the units for shipment. Lastly, rolled cardboard can be used in some cases if the weight of the units is not enough to crush the cardboard. Wall glass can be protected from scratches during shipment by using adhesive window film.

Once curtain walls have been delivered to the job site, unpacked and properly installed, they are at the highest risk of damage. Various construction trades will work both outside and inside the construction project for months or years. Not only can the aluminum be dented or scratched, the glass is at high risk for scratching and breakage as well. Some glass may be very expensive if it provides seismic- or hurricane-impact resistance or ballistic proof glass specified on courthouse projects. Protecting both the glass and metal once the curtain wall has been installed is a smart move by any contractor.

Most damage to curtain walls occurs at the lowest 5 feet of the walls on each floor of the building. This is where the workers and equipment will be in the closest contact to the walls. The best protection provides a “wall” in front of the glass wall itself. This protection wall can be constructed of wood or plastic. While wood is the strongest wall protection available, it is also expensive and time-consuming to erect. Corrugated plastic sheets in 4 ft by 8 ft sections can be taped together in front of the curtain wall providing a light weight and easily constructed wall. Unlike wood, plastic can be cleaned to remove dust and dirt as needed. Since there is no electricity for lights during early construction, protection walls constructed of white or clear plastic allow natural light to enter the building.

As the demand for curtain walls continues to increase, the need to protect these walls during construction will prove a challenge. Forward-thinking architects and building owners are taking the next step with wall systems by moving from energy conservation to energy generation. These newer walls with photovoltaic modules will be even more expensive and harder to repair or replace. With proper foresight and the use of temporary curtain wall protection, the smart contractor will not have to worry about damage to his or her curtain wall systems getting damaged.

Baseball Pitching Tips – Which Side of the Rubber Should You Pitch From?

I’ll gladly give you my input about pitching from different sides of the rubber but ultimately YOU will have to decide what works best for YOU and where YOU are comfortable. There are many baseball theories on this but ultimately you will have the final say because you are doing the pitching.

Usually, but not always, a right-hander stands on the third base side of the rubber and a left-hander on the first base side. Many believe this method gives you a better angle to the hitter. Let’s use a right-handed batter against a right-handed pitcher as an example. The righty pitcher who is starting from the third base side of the rubber will create the effect that the pitch is coming toward the righty batter and then going over the plate. If the righty pitcher is on the side of the rubber closest to first base, the righty batter will possibly be a little more comfortable. The reason is the ball is starting away from him and then coming into the plate.

Now, it can get a little tricky. Many pitchers who have a tail on their fastball, will do the opposite.

If that’s the case, the right-handed pitcher usually will opt for the first base side of the rubber and the left-handed pitcher will usually opt for the third base side of the rubber. Once again, it will give the pitcher a slightly better angle to the batter.

Some left-handed pitchers will pitch on the first base side of the rubber to left handed batters only, to make it even more intimidating to the batter.

Some right-handed pitchers will do the same and stand on the third base side of the rubber for right-handed batters, to make it more intimidating for the right-handed batter.

The point here is that there is nothing etched in stone as to where ANY pitcher should stand on the rubber.

I do however, think it makes a lot of sense for a right-handed pitcher to stand on the third base side of the rubber when facing a right-handed hitter and for a left-handed pitcher to stand on the first base side of the rubber when facing a left-handed hitter. As a pitcher, isn’t it your job to make hitters uncomfortable? I truly believe that it’s your job. Hitters should never be too comfortable when facing you. If a baseball hitter is intimidated by a pitcher, half the battle is won by the pitcher before the battle even begins!

1. Before the tenant can starts moving into your property make sure that your property is properly insured. Download and print out 3 copies of the property condition report. The property condition report should contains a very detail description of the property, for example it should describe the state of the oven, the stove, the doors, the ceiling, any damages that already exist before the tenant moves in and etc.

All of the below mention forms are require by law so make sure the tenant have all the require forms.

2. Download the Form 24B – Periodic Agreement OR Form 24A – Fixed Term Agreement and have it signed by you and your tenant. The form only contains general terms however if you want to put any additional conditions to the contract then put into in the addendum form. The addendum forms allow you to put in terms such as routine inspections, water consumption, carpet cleaning, pets, furnished properties, vacation – repairs and cleaning, keys and many other things that you can think of.

3. Download the Schedule 2 – Information for Tenant form and give it to your tenant.

4. Download the Form 1 and 8 – Lodgement of Security Bond Money.

5. Record water and electrical water meter reading before tenants move in (There is no form for this, you just needed to write the meter reading down to a piece and store it safe somewhere so that when the tenant move out you can work out how much to charge them).
