Itchy Dog – Natural Treatment Concepts for the Jack Russell Terrier

Canine atopic dermatitis is extremely common in the Jack Russell Terrier. This terrible skin condition causes the skin to become very inflamed, red and itchy. The itchy skin causes constant scratching and constant itching. The itchy Jack Russell Terrier will chew the feet and scratch the abdomen, groin and arm pit (axilla).Ear problems are common also.

To understand how natural treatment can be helpful and effective, it is important to know a little bit about the anatomy of the skin and what goes wrong in canine atopic dermatitis. In the itchy Jack Russell Terrier with atopy, there is a deficiency in the skin barrier. The skin cells are bound together with ceramide. This outer barrier of skin cells and ceramide is a bit like a brick wall with bricks bound together with mortar. In dogs with atopy, the ceramide is deficient in a protein called sphingosine so the “mortar” is crumbling. This imperfect skin barrier is leaky. Water escapes from the skin making it very dry. Allergens are able to cross the skin barrier triggering the immune system and causing a terrible itchy rash.

Products that wash away the damaged skin barrier will make the problem worse. Shampoo with soaps and surfactants should be avoided. Products that are drying or acidic will dry and damage the skin further. Products like tea tree oil are commonly sold as natural treatment remedies for itchy skin. Putting an acidic product like tea tree oil on a dog with atopic dermatitis is like putting petrol on fire.

There are some natural products that make a huge difference however.

Uses of Locks

When you think of locksmiths and locks you normally think of security, and specifically of the security of your belongings. Often we presume that the main purpose for getting a lock installed whether on the front door or the interior doors, is to allow us to not worry about our belongings being stolen while we sleep or when we’re away from the building. However as any locksmiths will tell you a lock actually serves many more purposes than this, and it is precisely because they are so crucial that we often take some of their purposes for granted.

For instance a lock not only provides security for our belongings but also for ourselves this way ensuring that no one can damage us financially or physically. This is far more important than the loss of earnings or belongings and means that when we go to sleep at night we can feel safe that no one will break into the house and pose a threat to us. Often murders start as robberies gone wrong, so a locksmith and a good lock can prevent a whole range of crimes.

At the same time a lock can help you to protect your family from things inside the house. For example if you get a locksmith to put a lock on a drawer or cupboard where you keep knives or medication, it can prevent children from getting to it and this way prevent them from having accidents. Similarly the lock on the front and back doors can not only prevent people from getting in to your home, but they can also prevent your children and pets from getting out where they might be vulnerable.

In another way a lock and a locksmith help to facilitate privacy. Here they can give you a lock in order to keep people out while you’re in the bathroom using the bath or toilet, or while you are in your room getting changed or sleeping which could lead to embarrassment otherwise. At the same time locks can also be used to lock away files, documents and information meaning that you can confidently keep records of important and sensitive records, information and data without worrying that it might fall into the wrong hands or be used against you. This could be something as simple as a diary which you wouldn’t want anyone else to read, or something else such as a your finances, or your clients for a business. Should another company get hold of your plans for your company meanwhile they might be able to leak them, or toe beat you to the punch and cripple your business.

All this then brings you one more benefit that should not be under rated – peace of mind. It allows you then to sleep easily knowing that you, your belongings, your data and your family are all safe. At the same time you can rest assured that you have complete privacy when you need it and you can go about your business undisturbed.

Five Advantages and Disadvantages to Franchise Businesses

Many Americans dream of owning their own business and being in control of their destiny. The only issue is that very few folks will actually dive in and take the risk to become their own boss. The reason for this holdback: it’s the fear of failing.

The rate of failures on startup businesses varies from person to person. However, Scott Shane of Case Western Reserve University often has his data cited. He states that failure rates in one year are about 25 percent and 10-year failure is about 71 percent. What do these numbers mean? If four businesses begin in one year, one business is bound to fail in that first year. 71 percent of businesses currently open will be shut down in 10 years.

Understanding Entrepreneurship In Franchising

Since failure rates are high, it’s of no surprise that very few people will try their hand at it. Many people don’t know that a way to become a business owner is to start a franchise. Franchises have less of a chance of failing and are actually do well monetarily. Using the same 10-year study from above, nearly 62 percent of franchises are still in business, an extremely high figure.

Why Franchises Stay In Business

Why is it that franchises stay in businesses longer than a startup company? Franchises have a large quantity of advantages that novice entrepreneurs don’t have, which means the venture is less risky.

Five Advantages of Franchises

Advantage 1 – Training and Support

Franchise businesses will give new franchise owners plenty of training and support in the beginning. Franchisers get a fraction of the profits so it’s in the best interest to ensure that the spin-off franchises do well. Smaller franchises offer people consequential support.

Advantage 2 – Purchase Company Model, Not Just Name

The big reason franchises tend to last and thrive is that the business model is already working. It’s not just about the name or the brand; it’s the model itself that helps to make this franchise successful.

Advantage 3 – Bargaining Power

When you have a franchise, you have some bargaining power with your suppliers. Independent, new business owners don’t have this kind of power or luxury and must earn it, unlike a franchise.

Advantage 4 – Expert Support

When you get involved with a franchise, your business is not alone. If you ever have problems or questions then you seek out some advice. Whatever business franchise you go into, you’re bound to have hundreds of people you can turn to that would love to give you advice so that you succeed. Many larger franchises will also give individual training and support.

Advantage 5 – Well Capitalized

Most franchises are well capitalized, which makes them have a high survival rate. Most startup businesses don’t have this luxury. People who want to get involved with franchises usually have just enough requirements to buy into the business.

Five Disadvantages of Franchises

The disadvantages of franchises are pretty clear-cut. Make sure to understand them before you decide to that the franchise business is right for you.

Disadvantage 1- Loss/Lack Of Control

Independent franchises often have to follow the guidelines set forth by the franchise including what kinds of tables to use, wallpapers and more. If you don’t want to give up that control, this won’t be the business for you.

Disadvantage 2 – Less Long-Term Profits

Franchises are a big business but making it rich isn’t always there. You’ll earn a decent income but nothing like Microsoft or any other Fortune 500 company.

Disadvantage 3 – Hard To Sell

When you have a franchise, it’s harder to get out from underneath it especially if it seems the parent company is having problems.

Disadvantage 4 – Possibility Of Parent Company Going Out Of Business

It doesn’t matter if your business is doing good or not; if the parent company goes under, so will you. Make sure you choose a company that’s been doing well, both in good times and in bad.

Disadvantage 5 – Possibility Of Getting A Bad Name

When a franchise fails to do well, you could be indirectly affected by it. Your reputation will be tarnished just because of the name.

8 Tips for Relieving Heel Pain

One of the most common problems I see in the office is heel pain. Heel pain can be caused by many things. Most people think they have a “heel spur” if they have pain in their heel. The truth is they may have a spur, but, a bone spur rarely causes pain. Most commonly heel pain is caused by plantar fasciitis. However, keep in mind not all heel pain is plantar fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a ligament that runs from the ball of the foot into the heel bone. It is the tight band of tissue you can feel in your arch when you pull your toes toward you. This tissue, the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed and irritated at its attachment into the heel bone. Every step that is taken causes a straining or pulling of the plantar fascia. This can cause a very painful condition as it makes it hard for the plantar fascia to heal when it is injured.

The three most common descriptions I get from my patients when they have plantar fasciitis are: pain when going from sitting to standing during the day, severe pain in the heel or arch when getting out of bed in the morning- (this may improve with 2-3 minutes of walking and stretching), and pain that gets worse in the bottom of the heel/arch as the day progresses. Remember, foot pain is never normal! Most foot pain can be effectively and easily treated.

Here are the 8 things you must do if you have heel pain.

*Avoid going barefoot. Wear a shoe or slipper around the house. I often recommend Crocs to be worn in the house. Your foot needs support. Walking barefoot in the house, especially if you have hardwood floors or your home is built on a concrete slab foundation, will aggravate an already inflamed plantar fascia.

*Stretch your calf. A tight achilles tendon can cause heel pain. There are several stretching exercises that you can do to decrease tightness and pain.

*Avoid wearing worn out shoes. Often times it is the favorite pair of old shoes that causes plantar fasciitis.

*Try using an insert in the shoe to support your arch. Avoid the flimsy supports you will find at the big box stores or the grocery store. The over the counter supports I recommend are Powersteps or Superfeet. You should not have to pay more than $50 for a good over the counter insert.

*I have never met anyone named Dr. Scholl. It is a big company. They make some great products. Arch supports for plantar fasciitis are not on the great product list. There are fancy machines in Walmart now. Regardless of what they advertise, those machines do NOT give you a “custom orthotic”. Save your money and try a Powerstep or Superfeet device. Avoid being scammed by stores selling “custom orthotics” or special inserts.

*Don’t avoid seeing a podiatrist for foot pain. Would you go to the mall for heart problems? Of course not. Then why do so many people go to a shoe store for foot problems? The clerk there is most likely not a doctor. I hate seeing a patient come in who has spent a lot of money on an insert purchased from a local store. Avoid the advertising scam! Podiatrists have years of training and, in most cases, can quickly diagnose and treat most foot problems.

*Use ice. I recommend my patients use a 16 ounce water bottle. Freeze it. Roll it in the arch. The ice helps decrease inflammation and the motion of the bottle on the arch helps stretch out the plantar fascia. Try this for 5-10 minutes twice a day.

*If you have heel pain, arch pain, or “heel spurs” for longer than 3-4 weeks, go see a podiatrist. Don’t let this become a chronic problem. The sooner heel pain is treated the quicker it will respond. It will go away with the correct treatment.

If you need to see a podiatrist, they may treat you with a cortisone injection, xrays, ultrasound, physical therapy, a night splint, a custom orthotic, other types of braces or supports, shock wave therapy, or even a new procedure called dry needling. Surgery is rarely needed for heel pain. Remember, heel pain is never normal. It can be effectively treated. A podiatrist is the expert when it comes to foot and ankle care.

Electric Motor Repair Can Mean Small Or Big Repairs

In the world today there are many different electric motors. We all see equipment that is powered by motors, whether you realize it or not. It might be a pool pump that powers water through a swimming pool, to a lathe in a woodshop that is used to make bowls or pencils. These motors typically average in size to about 5 HP. Then there are the larger electric motors that are used like vehicle motors, airplane motors. And you’ll hear of electric motors commonly used in business today that are commercial and industrial electric motors like those you might find in factories or warehouses and are used to power large machines. Electric motors are a big part of how businesses and factories are powered, but like everything today, there will be times when something goes wrong and you will need to have parts repaired or replaced on the motor.

Electric motor repairs usually need to be done by qualified repairmen or companies that specialize in electric motor repair. If you have an electric motor that is especially large and heavy, you will need to verify with the repair shop that they have the necessary equipment, like cranes, to be able to move your motor.

When your pool pump motor runs dry and burns up you know you can call your pool technician and he will repair the problem for you or if you need an electric motor repaired on any of your woodworking machines, you generally call in a repairman who works on small machines. When larger more powerful motors develop problems and need parts and repair work it often entails a larger scaled motor repair division found in companies that special in industrial and commercial machine motors.

These companies tend to have repairmen and technicians who are skilled in working on both A/C motors and D/C motors as well as motors that have a higher horse power. They will also have all the necessary tools and equipment needed to repair your motor back to a pristine state. Many of the large scale electric motor repair shops will have the ability to put a high build epoxy varnish treatment on repaired items as well as to do a Core Loss test, and equipment that can do vibrations testing on the electric motors and parts repaired.

At times your motor will have become so damaged, often because of too much heat that damages the insulation or because the winding has been cut, that it will need to be rewound. Almost all electric motor repair shops have the equipment required to test for this and can offer you motor rewinding services. Most shops should be experienced enough to be able to rewind all types and sizes of motors, such as for both A/C and D/C motors. With any electric motor repair work done, make sure to check is the shop is a certified warranty repair facility for your type engine manufacturer. If your machine is still under warranty, it is going to be very important that you use a shop that can do certified repair work on your engine.

A Recipe for Salisbury Steak With French Fried Onions and Tasty Sauce

Salisbury Steak is an elegant hamburger with seasonings and sauce. Though the steaks resemble hamburgers, the flavors are quite different. In fact, families may adapt the traditional recipe to suit their tastes. Some cooks form the patties into ovals instead of rounds.

I’ve made Salisbury Steak many times. One recipe, which I only made once, called for the addition of a can of deviled ham, which added a smoky flavor to the patties.

Myra Waldo’s historic work, The Complete Round-the-World Meat Cookbook, published in 1967 and still on my book shelf, contains an entire chapter on ground meats. According to Waldo, the hamburger has become a symbol of America. The ground meats chapter contains recipes for Mexican burgers, Burgundy burgers in wine sauce, Danish Beefsteak, Finnish Beef Patties, Italian Pizza burgers, Russian Hamburgers with Heavy Cream, and yes, a recipe for Salisbury Steak.

Her recipe contains grated onion, chopped green pepper, garlic, and marjoram I didn’t have any of these ingredients so I created my own recipe, using extra lean ground beef, some leftover French fried onions, and chili sauce. Because the French fried onions contained salt, I didn’t add any extra to the beef mixture. I served these fancy burgers with baked potatoes and a salad of Boston lettuce (which is also called Butter lettuce and Bibb lettuce), Roma tomatoes, sliced avocado, and honey-mustard dressing.

If you’re stumped on dinner, Salisbury Steak with French Fried Onions and Tasty Sauce may be just the meal-saver you need. This recipe is easily doubled and you can make extra patties for another day if you wish.

Ingredients

1 pound 93% lean ground beef

1 slice fresh bread, crust removed, and torn into small pieces (I used whole wheat bread.)

1/2 cup crushed French fried onions

Garlic pepper to taste

Wondra flour

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon butter

1 1/2 cups water

2 beef bullion cubes (I used ones with reduced salt.)

2 tablespoons chili sauce

2 tablespoons cornstarch

A little cold water

Method

Put the ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Add the torn bread, water, onions, and garlic pepper. Gently combine and form into four, inch-thick patties. Coat the patties with Wondra flour. Put the olive oil and butter in a large skillet. As soon as the butter melts and the skillet is hot add the patties. Cook until they are crispy brown on the underside and then flip. Cook a few more minutes until the inside is no longer pink. Transfer patties to plate. Lower the heat. Add water, beef cubes, and chili sauce. Whisk over medium heat, stirring constantly, and making sure all the brown bits from the bottom of the pan are mixed into the sauce. Put cornstarch in a small cup and stir in a little cold water until it is smooth and lump-free. Whisk corn starch into skillet and cook until the sauce thickens. Return beef patties to skillet. Cover and simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes. Serve with mashed potatoes, baked, potatoes, or cooked wide noodles. Makes 4 servings.

Our Hyster Forklift Review

Hyster forklifts are manufactured and distributed by an American company NACCO materials handling Group. They have dealers all around the world, Adaptalift is currently the Australian soledealer for the new Hyster Forklift range.

The Hyster DX forklift range came out after theHyster XM range of forklifts, starting from 1998 through to 2006. The Hyster DX forklift range was superseded by the Hyster TX range of forklift.

The Hyster 2.00 – H3.00 X – DX forklift range where manufactured at NMHG’s Japanese based plant, and imported into the Australian market. Design wise they where a huge jump forward from the XM range.

Hyster forklifts purpose with these trucks where to make a forklift that would outperform and outlast their nearest price competitor which was the Toyota 7 series range.

Some basic improvements from the XM range

Service intervals – Where increased up to 3000 hours between routine services, which allowed for the End user to have a saving in maintenance costs.

Warranty – the introduced a 3 year warranty option, although standard was still the 1200hour s12 month, their three year warranty was increase to 3 year 3600 hours (conditions did apply).

Hyster Parts promise – now this is where it gets tricks, they always had a Woolworth s promise for their parts, if you found a Hyster part elsewhere cheaper they would beat it by 10%. All good to promise it, not sure really how often something like this would get used, as its generally emergency breakdowns that facilitate needing most forklift parts.

Side access panels – They changed their engine bay access to include swing away side panels and forward tilting bonnets, which allowed for a greater access for the technician that had to service the forklift.

Floor panels – They also included lift away floor panels, which when you use the side access panels, you get great unrestricted access to the engine and drive train. Technicians tend to love this, as forklifts are notoriously hard to work on.

Steering – The hydrostatic steering has been around for awhile, but Hyster redesigned this with 40% less serviced parts.

Dash – The dash was redesigned with a steel finish in mind, allowing for a great wear and durability.

Cab mounting – The driver cab is suspended on the chassis at 4 points and with the steel axle rubber block mounts. results in a pretty comfortable ride and does extend the component life due to vibration and road shock, also helping the operators with back issues.

Operator Cabin Design

Hyster Forklifts certainly changed their operate cabin enough to notice the difference between the Xm’s and the DX’s.

Hyster have a few unique things about them, with the operator hydraulic functions being standard next to the seat, as well as the monotrol pedals, which allows for direction and acceleration in the one pedal. A word to the wise the monotrol pedals takes a bit of getting use to, We’re not really fans of it, but when operators get used to it, they love it.

Instrument panel

There really isn’t anything new here with all the standard things included, such as. Gauges for hour meter coolant temperature and fuel, warning lights, charge circuit, engine oil pressure, auto transmission oil temperature, fasten seat belt, glow plug and fuel sediment Diesel only. with Air restrictions, brake fluid level and low coolant warning lights being optional.

The steering Column also tilts to suit the operator position, they included a larger nonslip side steps in the frame.

Engines

They had quite a few options to choose from, if your now looking at them second hand, its worth popping the hood too see what’s under there.

Generally they came in twp options LPG or Diesel, it would be pretty rare to find petrol or duel fuel option with these forklifts

The LPG /petrol engine options

Mazda M4-2.0G engine or the Mazda M4-2.2 G engine.

The Diesel engine options

Mazda M4-2.5D engine or the M4-3.0G engine.

Optional Equipment

Hyster forklifts generally give you a lot of optional extra’s to consider, Hyster Dx range were no different, so just double check what you are looking at if you are purchasing a Second hand Hyster DX forklift.

Integral sideshift carriage – This types of integral mounted sideshift carriages allowed for a higher capacity and reduced overall truck length.

Seat – the Sears Lo-rider semi suspension seat

Wheels – They also offer a dual wheel option. If you are looking at a second hand option, don’t worry just talk to your local forklift dealer about getting a aftermarket kit fitted.

Tyres – Ex factory they came with Pneumatics but you could also get solid Puncture proof tyres, or non marking green or white tyres.

Cooling system, anti plugging – A beefed up copper tube and fin radiator.

Manual Transmission – This was offered but we are willing to bet, none came into Australia

Levers – there where quite a few options here to consider, being hand/foot controls for Forward/Reverse Levers, hand controls with manual transmission.

Light and warning instruments – A full light and warning kit option was also included,

Weather Cover – Rain protections, include windscreen and wiper, rear and side curtains with roll-up and tiip-up type.

Exhaust and air system – a vertical exhaust or dual elements

Valve and hosing – its standard with 2 valves, but can run 4 valves, very easily. Allowing for a lot of extra accessories on the forklift, such as push pull attachments.

This range of forklift was a bread and butter range for Hyster, sold into and around the Asia pacific region. Between 1998 and 2007, eventually being replaced by the TX range. The average retail price new was anywhere between $25 000 and $35 000, depending on what options you where looking at.

You can find a used Hyster Dx Forklift for any where between $5 000 – $15 000 again depending on condition and age. Being a Mazda engine, its pretty easy to find parts for servicing and maintenance. As a second hand option these forklifts are suited, to a 25 hour a week or lower application, as they are starting to age.

But looked after and serviced regularly, you should have them last for decades to come. so talk to your local dealer if your re interested in buying a second hand Hyster DX forklift.

Garage Doors – Upgrade Your Carport With Sliding Doors

The most common thing that a sliding door is used is on garages. Sliding garage doors often come with an automatic trigger for convenience. These automatic doors can operate with a flick of a button.

One of the advantages of having them is on a bad weather. You can easily open them without getting out of your car; you don’t need to get wet or even call for somebody inside your house to open them for you.

But with this great tool, there are also cons. The battery operated garage doors must be checked occasionally for smooth operation. On rare cases, if there is a relative nearness to other doors, your neighbors’ garage door might be activated too.

Also with long time usage, the doors might get stuck sometimes; this is also true to old cars having automatic window problems. It usually gets stuck and the rails don’t work correctly as they should. They can be easily opened again with helping them manually.

But with this problem being a common one, they can be repaired easily by professionals or you can contact the manufacturer and you won’t spend anything as long as they are still covered by the warranty.

Garage doors that open automatically have some basic features. As with security, they have an auto stop feature so your car won’t get scratched during operation or to prevent your kids to get caught. There is usually a panic button to halt the operation to prevent it to forcibly close the door.

As with common sliding doors, there are also lateral sliding doors. They consist of panels which are joined together to run on a track located on its top. It is also guided by the bottom track which can be either being surface mounted or installed within the floor.

Each sliding garage door is supposedly made to fit the client’s needs. Both types of doors have manual/remote operation buttons and the option to have electrical operation.

How to Prolong the Life of Your Skateboard Deck

As you skate across town, your board probably touches the pavement. Whenever this happens, pieces of the wood are removed from the board. Bit by bit, your skateboard deck is sanded away thanks to the rough concrete and asphalt that the board rides on.

After a while, the nose and tail of the deck will be ground down to a sharp edge. This edge can be a hazard for your legs. It’s also dangerous for other skateboarders. Since you can’t prevent the ground from touching your board, you’ll have to do something about the ground damaging it.

The easiest thing you can do to keep the ground from wrecking your deck is to buy some urethane tail/nose guards. These guards were quite popular in the late seventies and early eighties, and they’re making a comeback in modern day skating.

The urethane nose and tail guards come at a cost. They add a little bit of weight to the board, and also change the angle of pop. To many people, this isn’t such a big deal. If you’re a professional skater, you may want to think twice before installing these guards, as even the slightest imperfection may inhibit the skills you’ve built up over the years.

Installing the tail and nose guards is as easy as screwing them in to the deck. Sometimes, they need to be cut with a pair of scissors so that they fit properly, but the often fit just fine the first time.

If you want to protect the bottom of your board, you’ll want to buy some urethane rail guards. Just like the tail and nose guards, these rail guards were popular in the late seventies and early eighties. They’re just like the nose and tail guards, but are attached to the rails of the deck instead of the tail or nose.

These guards also help protect the graphic. Since the board never actually touches whatever you’re sliding on, the graphic stays in tact for a longer period of time. The rail protectors do add a tiny amount of weight to the board, but it’s usually insignificant.

One awesome thing about the protectors is that they come in many different colors. You have a choice of some awesome 80s neon colors or some more modern day colors, like black and white.

If you don’t like the thought of adding some protectors to your board, then you’ll need to avoid skating in areas that will hurt your board. If you skate on the hard asphalt for an extended period of time, your board will wear out very quickly.

Try to skate on smooth concrete. Since it’s not as rough as asphalt, your board doesn’t get destroyed as quickly. Smooth concrete also hurts less when you bail! If you can’t find any smooth spots to skate, then your best bet is to not do as many tricks involving ollies.

A lot of boards get destroyed when the run into a wall. If you want to protect your deck, then make sure that it doesn’t get away from you and smash into a curb or fence or other hard object. When your deck hits a wall, the glue that holds the veneer comes undone. After this happens a lot, the board splinters, and eventually falls apart.

If you are sure to follow these steps, your deck should last you for a good amount of time. You will also be a safer skater, because there won’t be sharp edges that could hurt you or another skater. The most important thing though is that your deck won’t be as dangerous to yourself.

Chicken Caesar Salad and a Chocolate Dessert Make an Easy Warm Weather Meal

With the long hot days of summer comes the desire for lighter, cooler foods for family meals. These two recipes will help fill this need in your life. I especially like to do as much of my dinner preparation in the cool of the morning as possible. My husband and I have to get going very early, sometimes as early as 3:45 a.m., so there is not much energy left for doing anything by dinnertime. Having things prepared, or at least started, is very helpful in getting dinner on the table.

The recipe for this Caesar salad is wonderfully different with the addition of fresh, sweet grapes and a bit of Swiss cheese. The pie is made easy with a purchased chocolate cookie, or graham cracker, crust.

Grape Caesar Salad

1/2 head romaine lettuce

1/2 head iceberg lettuce

3 cups seedless grapes, halved

1/2 cup grated Swiss cheese

3 Tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

2-3 cups cooked, chopped chicken breast

Assembly: Tear lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place in a large bowl with grapes, Swiss cheese, chicken and croutons. Pour dressing over and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, toss and serve.

Parmesan Cheese Croutons:

1 cup small bread cubes

1 tablespoon melted butter

1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

Toss bread cubes with the butter and Parmesan cheese in a small skillet. Toast over moderate heat until golden brown; stir frequently, watching closely so the croutons do not burn.

Lemon Dressing:

1/3 cup olive oil

1/4 cup lemon juice

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 small clove garlic, crushed

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Place lemon juice in a small bowl and whisk in olive oil in a slow, steady stream. Add remaining ingredients and whisk until completely combined.

Tips: For calorie saving use a lite Caesar dressing. Of coarse, if time is really tight, the croutons, lettuces and chicken can be purchased already prepared.

Serves 8 as a side dish, omitting meat

Serves 4-6 as a main dish, depending on appetites

Cocoa Mousse Pie

1 package (3 oz.) cream cheese, softened

2/3 cup sugar

1/3 cup baking cocoa

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 carton (8 oz.) frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 graham cracker or chocolate cookie crust (9 inch size)

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar and cocoa until well combined. Add milk and vanilla and beat until smooth. Using spatula or wooden spoon, fold in whipped topping; pour into crust. Cover and refrigerate until serving time.

More Brake Power on Your Kawasaki ZZR1100

The Kawasaki ZZR1100D series motorcycle went through several evolutions culminating in the D9. The machines enjoyed several cosmetic developments and a change to bigger carburetors, but throughout the years Kawasaki stuck with the same front Tokico four piston brake calipers.

Anyone who has owned these machines will know what a vivid performer they are. The chassis is planted and stable with it’s long wheel base and smooth suspension. The riding position in unison with the full fairing presents the rider with a superb platform to cover fast long mileage with ease. This of course was rendered possible by the power plant. The ZZR1100 engine was legendary against its contemporaries and put the icing on the cake of this fabulous bike. The only problem now was stopping it!

What was the solution to the under specified front brakes? Several manufacturers came up with bespoke adapter brackets that would take an off the shelf, uprated caliper and marry it to the OEM forks. There were also after market bespoke calipers for direct fitment but both these solutions came in at an excess of £700.

Luckily there was a high performance bike (the Suzuki GSXR 1000K1/2) whose front calipers fit the ZZR1100 fork almost without modification. The GSXR calipers are a six piston Tokico unit in an attractive gold finish. They are significantly more powerful than the OEM four piston units on the ZZR1100. The caliper mounting lugs take M8x1.25 (coarse pitch) bolts and when offered directly to the ZZR fork, are slightly off lateral alignment with the brake rotor by about 2mm. The only modification necessary is to reduce the the fork leg diameter on the ZZR1100 from 10mm, the original brake mounting bolt size, to 8mm to take a bolt that would fit the GSXR1000K1 calipers. This is a simple adaptor kit you can see on this installation video.

There are certain jobs that should always be left to professional plumbers, however, so do not try to fix any major repairs on your own or you can cause even more damage.

When working on a plumbing project you may find yourself frustrated by a stuck fixture. There are a few techniques that many SLC plumbers use to remove stuck plumbing fixtures. Here are just a few things to try:

Begin by tightening the nut that is connected to the fixture. If the nut is able to move at all you may be able to then get it the move the opposite way and get it loose. If you are able to back it out the other way you can usually remove the fixture with little problem.

If that trick does not work try to jar it loose. You can do this with a center punch and hammer. Make sure you aim the center punch with the middle of the nuts sides and try to shake the nut free.

If this does not free the fixture apply some heat. Heat will make the nut expand and may be the ticket to loosening it. Use safety measures when heating the nut, and use your wrench to loosen the nut while it is still hot and expanded.

If all else fails you can always cut the nut and bolt. This can be done with a hacksaw. Cut through the threads of the bolt first, and continue on until you can break off the nut from the fixture.

How to Choose a Piano Lamp

One of the most important accessories that you will ever purchase for your piano is a piano lamp. You may think that choosing a lamp for your piano is a simple procedure, without many details to think about. But actually there is quite a lot to consider in order to purchase a lamp that both fits your needs, and the specific requirements of your piano.

You can narrow your search by first answering a simple question: Do you have a grand piano or an upright (vertical) piano? There is a difference between the type of piano lamp you would purchase for a grand piano, as opposed to a vertical or upright piano. But there are also lamps that will work for both types of pianos.

Now that you have narrowed down your search, lets talk about the different lamp choices available for a grand (or baby grand) piano. The most popular lamp style for a grand piano is a clamp or clip-on lamp. These lamps are made specifically to clip-on (or clamp onto) the music desk (also known as the music shelf or music holder) of a grand piano. The clamp on these lamps will fit securely over the top edge of the music desk, and will stay in place by tightening the two thumbs screws on the back of the clamp. There is no chance of damaging your piano because the clamps have an inner piece that is lined with felt to protect your piano. The thumbscrews simply tighten the felt-lined clamp so that the lamp stays in place.

These lamps offer you choices as far as style, color, finish, lighting technology, shade sizes, brightness, and energy efficiency. Among the variety of lamps available for grand pianos are: LED Grand Piano Lamps, which offer many advantages including low energy consumption, long lasting light, mercury and chemical free, non-glare light, low heat light, and no bulb replacement necessary. Another variety uses standard incandescent lighting technology, and has a 14″ shade which swivels on a gooseneck. A third variety uses fluorescent lightning with a 22″ slim-line shade and a beautiful contemporary look.

If you have an upright piano, the best choice is to use a desktop style lamp. These lamps are very similar in style to lamps that are used on desktops and table tops, however they are more geared toward use on the piano since most of them use a double adjustment arm and a swivel shade so that you can fine tune the direction of the light where you need it the most (usually onto the music, or in some cases, the music and the keyboard).

These lamps have a solid weighted base that keeps them from easily tipping over, and the bottom of the base is lined with felt to protect your piano. Upright piano lamps also offer a number of variations and choices such as: Different shade sizes, various lighting technologies (LED, Incandescent, Fluorescent) different styles, colors and finishes, and different amounts of wattage.

There are two piano lamp styles that work on both grand and upright pianos. First, there is the Piano Floor Lamp, which has a long cylindrical shade and a long arm. The lamp can be placed on either side of the grand or upright piano, and the long arm reaches over and positions the shade over the music, lighting up your sheet music. The second lamp style is called a Counter Balance Lamp, (Balance Arm Lamp). This lamp is sort of a combination of an upright lamp and a floor lamp. It has a solid weighted base like an upright lamp, and a long arm and shade that reaches over to shine light onto the music books. On a grand piano, this lamp would be placed on the piano on either side of where the music sits. (Usually where a metronome or extra music books will rest). On an upright piano, this lamp would be placed on either side of the top of the instrument, and the long arm would reach the light over to the music.

House of Troy Lighting is the company of choice when it comes to well-constructed specialized piano lamps. They are located in Vermont and have been a well- respected and reliable company for over 60 years.

Fabric Painting for Beginners

So you want to learn how to paint on fabric? That’s really cool and a great decision. There is so much you can do with fabric painting as a craft whether it’s for fun or profit. There was a time when this craft was considered a skill only for the schooled artist or the creative person. Not so, or should I say, not so anymore. It is certainly a craft that can easily be developed and in a very short time frame.

There are so many people becoming involved in fabric painting in general but regardless of how many folks enter the field you can develop your own style; it’s like having a fingerprint, it’s completely yours no matter where you go your style will reflect you. You can and should put your unique twist to your work. Folks will begin to identify a certain look or style as your distinct signature piece.

Painting on fabrics can reflect realism such as land or seascapes, floral or plant creations, geometric patterns, cartoon characters or a selection of beautiful colors and textures. You can basically apply the paint in any form you like to create artistically pleasing designs.

Once you have practiced and feel comfortable with your new painting skills you may want to try various mediums to paint on. Many people choose tee shirts, but did you know that you can paint on your sweats, bags, purses, dance wear, sneakers, hats, jeans, ribbons, scarves, wall hangings, upholstery, bedding and anything else that would sit still long enough for you to paint it.

Great Benefits

The benefits to fabric painting are also gi-normous (new word- a combination of gigantic and enormous). Consider the benefits of creating a whole new wardrobe for you. Gift giving also becomes more personalized with a signed work of art from you; you may begin to see an increase in friends when word gets out of your new found talent and generosity. Decorating the home and dressing your family really becomes more fun too, for you and the kids. Now you can create the painted outfits with the coordinating sneakers and hats to match.

An important consideration you should keep in mind when painting is the type of fabric you choose to paint on. If it is 100% cotton, then you can count on it shrinking and your design seizing up it. But there is a solution for just about every challenge you will encounter. The solution for this one is to simply pre-wash your fabrics without using softeners or starches and allow the fabric to dry completely. You will need to iron all ridges and creases out of the fabric to have a smooth surface to work on. The easier option is to paint on a pre-shrunk fabric or a cotton blend; you will avoid the shrinking altogether by doing this.

As a beginner, you would also want to paint on light or white fabrics. Your colors come out closer to what is represented in your paint container that way. To be effective with painting on colors take a little more practice and may require a totally different set of paints. For instance if you are painting on black or dark fabrics, you will need to use opaque paints for this to be effective.

The bottom line in painting on fabrics is to have fun, gather all the necessary information and get going. So what are you waiting for? There are many masterpieces inside of you just waiting for the opportunity to come out. Go for it and enjoy!
