The Pros and Cons of Pergo Flooring

It is not hard to get off track when discussing the pros and cons of Pergo flooring. For many years, Pergo flooring was synonymous with laminate flooring; the reason being that it was Pergo that first came up with the idea of laminate flooring. Pergo is still the largest producer of this flooring type, even though the company is now owned by Mohawk, another fine producer of laminate flooring. In any event, any discussion of what is good or bad about Pergo flooring usually degenerates into an argument as to the pros and cons of laminate flooring in general.

Good Things about Pergo

Pergo has been in the laminate flooring business for longer than anyone else. There are many highly competitive brands today, but Pergo remains the top selling brand by a significant margin, which tells you something about the quality of their product line. Another positive indication that Pergo is a brand that can be trusted lies in their warranties, of up to 30 years, and more than reasonable for most types of flooring. Warranties have exceptions however. If you routinely spill liquids on your Pergo floor and don’t wipe up afterward, the floor will eventually begin to deteriorate, and the warranty will cease to be valid.

Pergo laminate flooring is almost ridiculously easy to install. The individual planks simply snap together. Most laminate flooring, including Pergo flooring, require an underlying material between the laminate and the subflooring. The Pergo Allocade product line is an exception, as an underlay material has already been added. Hardwood floors are difficult for non-professionals to install. If you can snap two boards together, you can install Pergo flooring yourself.

Finally, you can purchase Pergo flooring for half of what you might spend for hardwood flooring, and from a distance Pergo is indistinguishable from genuine hardwood. In addition you can install Pergo in rooms where it would be inadvisable to install genuine hardwood floors, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms located below grade.

Not-So-Good Features

There is little to say about Pergo flooring that is really bad, although there are some really bad examples of laminate flooring on the market. If you want to find out what some of those bad examples are, purchase laminate flooring that is selling at clearance prices. Quality flooring products seldom sell for prices that “will never be repeated.”

Do not expect Pergo flooring to last nearly as long as oak, maple, or other hardwood floors. Thirty years is about the maximum, and brand names like Pergo, Mohawk, or Armstrong should give you at least 20 years of good service.

One of the main disadvantages of Pergo flooring is it cannot be refinished. The “wood” is thin veneer; very thin veneer. Scuff it, and the inner core might reveal itself. The inner core is not attractive, and a damaged plank or panel will probably need to be replaced.

No matter how much laminate flooring looks like the real thing, it rarely adds to the resale value of a house. A prospective buyer looking for a house with hardwood floors will usually bypass any house on the market featuring laminate flooring, even if that flooring is top-of-the-line Pergo flooring.

Which Types to Purchase

Color and texture is definitely your choice, and your choice alone. Current best sellers are Oak, Hawaiian Koa, and several styles of Hickory. Wider planks have become more popular in recent years. Pergo comes in widths ranging from 5 inches to 12 inches, and in thicknesses ranging from 8 mm to 12 mm.

Should You Purchase Pergo Flooring?

If you are set on laminate flooring, the answer is definitely yes if you can find a style that suits your taste, which should not be difficult. A good piece of advice would be to “go thick” and opt for 12mm planks as opposed to 8 mm or 10 mm planks. Thicker planks should still be affordable, plus they will have more of a solid feel, absorb warmth better, and be a bit quieter to walk on.

How To Plan A Trip With Ageing Parents

Plan Ahead:

Planning is very important in travelling. Ask your parents where they want to go so they will feel good, pack lightly so that it will be easy to carry. It will be difficult for your parents to move with a wheelchair and for you to rush in a connecting flight so if possible book a direct flight.

Request travel approval from a physician:

If your ageing parents have any major health issue, be sure to get travel approval from his or her primary care physician. Find out if your parent requires any vaccinations or prescriptions prior to travelling. Keep documentation with contact information for doctors with you when you travel with your ageing parents in case of an emergency.

Make arrangements for any special need:

If your parent will require wheelchair at the airport or any special seating, contact the airline you are flying with and arrange for these considerations. Make your loved one wear shoes that can easily be taken off and put back on. Let the agents know about any surgical implants that may be detected when you are going through security.

Label all medications:

Be sure that all medication taken on a trip for your parents is clearly labelled with the name of medicine, dosage and administration instruction. The medications should be approved through airport security checkpoints. It will be easy for you to help your parents with their medication while you travel together.

Make arrangements for dietary needs:

Older adults have dietary restrictions; they can only enjoy the limited list of foods, so make sure there will be appropriate food available or you are taking some special food with you for your parents.

Provide your elderly parents a way to contact you:

Provide your parents a way to contact you just in case you get separated. Giving your parents a prepaid mobile phone is a great way to ensure that your parents can get in touch with you whenever it is necessary. Make sure that your parent has written down your cell phone number somewhere.

Proper time to rest:

Whenever you plan a trip you focus on enjoying as much as you can, but planning a trip with elderly parents you focus on the ways in which they are comfortable. Go out have a look at the world around you; try out new things with your parents. But make sure that you are giving your elderly parents a proper time to rest. Avoid scheduling anything late night as elderly individuals are early to bed so it will disturb them.

City of Ottawa Deck Permits

So, you’ve decided that it’s time to turn your back yard into the paradise you’ve always dreamed of by building a deck. After much deliberation with your better half, you decide to take the project on yourself – after all, Bob down the street built his own deck, and he’s not nearly as bright or as capable as you are. Plus, he didn’t have your secret weapon: a really handy brother-in-law.

The first step is to come up with a design, and answer the numerous questions that go with it: how big? how high? do I attach it to the house? floating or on piers? what type of material? where to put the stairs? what type of railing? do I need a railing? and so on and so on. Then you remember that disagreement you had with your neighbour last fall and it hits you. Do I need a permit? What if I build without a permit and that neighbour reports me to the city and they make me tear it down? Or worse, I try to sell my house at some point and the potential buyers check with the city and find out that there wasn’t a permit pulled for the deck. Who wants to buy a house for which they could be liable if there is ever a problem resulting from a bad deck design that would never have passed inspection?

No problem, you go on to the City of Ottawa website and check out the requirements. Can’t be that complicated, right? You soon realize that there is a lot of information and it isn’t quite as concise as you had hoped.

The following is a brief outline as to what it all means and why these specific requirements came to be in the first place.

You will need a permit if:

  1. Your deck is more than 600mm (24″) off the ground. At some point, somebody came up with the precise measurement of 600mm (24″) as being the distance you could fall off of something, like a deck, and seriously hurt yourself. Especially in a back yard setting where there may be rocks, stone retaining walls, etc., to land on. Therefore, if your deck is going to be more than 600mm off the ground, the City of Ottawa (and the province of Ontario) wants to make sure that you have adequate safeguards in place to make sure that anyone that occupies your deck is protected.
  2. Your deck is attached to your house. Attaching a deck structure to your house structure is obviously something that needs to be done properly, especially with today’s construction methods. For example, with the use of engineered floor joists, it is not uncommon for the web section of the rim joist of your home to be 3/8″or ½” OSB, where you would normally expect to find a 2×8 or 2×10. Attaching the ledger board of your deck to OSB is never going to end well, despite using the appropriate lag bolts and spacing. The City of Ottawa (and the province of Ontario) wants to make sure that the structural connection between your deck and your house is sound.
  3. Proximity to the property line. Picture yourself laying in your lounger on your beautiful deck that you had a permit for and specifically built to code, only to look up and see your neighbour watching you because his deck is four feet off the ground and snug up against the other side of your six foot fence. You may be fond of your neighbour, but now we have a problem. The City of Ottawa (and the province of Ontario) wants to make sure that your privacy is protected.
  4. Floating or piers. If you plan on attaching your deck to your house, but you decide to save a few bucks by putting the deck supports on deck blocks (also called pyramid blocks), there could be a serious problem when winter comes and your deck experiences frost heave but your house hopefully doesn’t (if it does, you have more to worry about than deck permits). The City of Ottawa (and the province of Ontario) wants to make sure that if you attach your deck to your house that you also place it on the proper piers/footings.

The Ontario Building Code also defines the minimum requirements for a multitude of other factors, such as joist size, beam size, handrail requirements, etc. Do your homework before you build, and should you have any further questions, please contact C3 Ottawa Renovations for more information.

The Best Oil Finishes For Your Deck

It’s a fact: No matter what type of material you use or how well it’s built, a hardwood deck will naturally wear over time. Even such naturally decay-resistant varieties as Ipe decking are vulnerable to the elements, and prolonged exposure to varying weather patterns and UV radiation will inevitably lead to discoloration, checking and cupping. The good news, however, is that there are many high-quality deck finishes available that help prolong the life of any hardwood deck.

While many solid and opaque finishes offer great protection against the elements, most homeowners choose hardwood decking because of its appearance. The best way to protect a deck while maintaining its original look is to use a clear, high-quality oil finish. A penetrating oil finish with UV inhibitors will offer great protection against the elements without covering up the natural beauty of the hardwood. The following are a few of the top brands of oil finish, their strengths and weaknesses, and what to expect when using them.

Superdeck

The professional grade transparent stains and sealers from Superdeck feature three high-quality oils, including linseed and tung oil, that offer great protection against harsh weather. The transparent oxide pigments in the Superdeck formula protect against harmful UV rays without covering up the wood’s natural appearance. Superdeck Transparent Stain & Sealer also comes with a satisfaction guarantee.

Penofin Performance Coatings

Penofin is the leading choice for environmentally friendly exterior wood stains. Penofin Verde contains all-natural ingredients, including vegetable ester solvents, plant-based resins, and Brazilian rosewood oil – no petroleum or heavy metal compounds here. It offers 99% UV protection and is safe for inside use.

Olympic

Olympic’s line of clear waterproofing sealants feature a custom penetrating oil formula, two-way waterproofing protection, advanced UV protection, and their exclusive Scuff Guard ® protection formula. This is a great finish if you’re looking to protect against mildew and wood rot and works best when applied to new or pressure-treated wood.

Messmer’s

This oil-based finish is perfect for those who want a protective coat with an even appearance. While Messmer’s UV Plus finish does change the color of the deck, it does not affect the texture or cover up the grain pattern. The finish is offered in two attractive colors, natural and red mahogany, and is great on denser hardwoods, such as Ipe decking.

Tips for Treatment

There are a few important tips you should take into consideration before and during the application of an oil deck finish. Following these simple tips will help ensure a much longer lifespan for your deck.

1. Finish all four sides.

End checking is a big problem for deck owners, and one that can be easily avoided by sealing and finishing every side of the board, even the bottom and the ends. Applying an even coat to all sides helps protect from water, mold and mildew in inauspicious places, like under the deck.

2. Finish before exposing to weather.

The best time to apply an oil finish is in spring or early summer, when the weather is warm and dry. Apply the finish in a dry, covered area before installing the boards. The decking material should be completely treated and dried before it is exposed to the elements.

3. Apply ASAP.

Even in nice weather, the longer the decking materials sits unfinished, the greater the chances of end-checking or warping. Getting the finish on as soon as you can is a great way to minimize the amount of damage that can occur to the wood before installation.

4. Go easy on the pressure washing.

Pressure washing is a great way to prepare hardwood decking material for a finish, but be careful not to strip off the surface fibers. Keep the pressure washer on a low setting and don’t get too enthusiastic.

Clear, penetrating oil finishes are a great way to lengthen the lifespan of your hardwood deck, but picking the right one is important. Make sure the oil finish you decide on features good UV protection, protects against water damage, and is safe for the type of wood you will be using. Speak with a hardwood decking professional if you have any questions about the type of oil finish you should use on your new deck.

How a $10 Device Can Almost Cause a Bankruptcy – Cyber Bank Heist in Bangladesh

A little while ago the news got out that the Bangladeshi Federal Reserve bank lost 81 million dollars due to hack. They could have lost close to one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) if the hackers didn’t make a silly spelling booboo in the recipient’s name…

The fact that these large sums aren’t transferred without a decent verification is worth a discussion on its own, but in this case I’d like to discuss the hardware protection of the bank… I almost don’t feel sorry anymore.

But why, what happened to the bank?

I learned this week from our friends at the hacker news that a $10 secondhand networking switch was used to protect the system that was connected to the SWIFT network. This is the network that controls the payments made to all accounts in the world.

I can’t grasp my mind about the fact that someone actually thought it was a good idea to buy and use this switch in a global network like SWIFT… I even can’t start to think about what the arguments must have been towards the manager or CISO who approved the use of this network switch…

Ow wait, I made an assumption here… I assumed that a manager or the CISO was involved in this process. I’m afraid they didn’t have the slightest clue that this switch sat there in their network, waiting to be hacked.

Can this happen again?

I’d like to say this is a single indecent, but the truth is that I see these types of boo boos a lot! Employees who don’t have decent Wi-Fi coverage at their work and bringing their own Wi-Fi router, setting it up with no encryption or a weak web encryption, leaving the corporate network open for the public, despite $100,000 firewalls protection the front door.

My educated guess is that the hackers have been in for a long time, and that they have prepared their battle well. Their spelling error though is a horrible script kiddie mistake, one they won’t forget.

How can we prevent this from happening?

There are a few options I think. First and foremost, know what’s in your network. Have a clear and backed up company policy when it comes to network equipment. Ensure that all devices in your network are known to you and are under secured patch management.

Second, identify core critical machines and connections in your network. In this case, the SWIFT network being available in one hop from the world is unimaginable to me. Set up multiple layers of protection, especially if you can make multimillion transactions automatically. I would love to see the identity and access management scenarios for this bank and this machine. It makes me wonder about the system itself. Does it trust anything it’s being told? Why aren’t we using 2 factor authentication for this, or dual authorization for that matter?

Last but not least, I strongly believe in monitoring. If the solution, digital protection services, had been deployed with help of the network sweep services, unknown equipment would have been detected instantly. This would have prevented this hack from happening.

Would you like to learn how we can test and protect your networks, drop a line! Nobody wants to hit the news with a statement that a $10 secondhand device was the cause of the billion dollar heist…

Parapsychology: Harnessing Your Etheric Energy

It is an unfortunate reality that society has inadvertently categorized the natural abilities associated with bio-etheric energy as a form of entertainment.

Classifying skills such as precognitive event recognition alongside amusement attractions such as stage illusion have undermined the acknowledgement of etheric energy itself, impeding the acceptance of a wide spectrum of very natural, very real capabilities.

Why, then, are etheric-related abilities seemingly so rare? The answer is multidimensional.

Identifying Your Etheric Energy

All human beings have the ability to recognize, embrace, and utilize their bio-etheric energy, or the energy produced and emitted by all living organisms. Once harnessed, bio-etheric energy can allow a being to:

* Gain a broader, deeper perception of physical and/or emotional surroundings

* Achieve greater use of the brain’s traditional and extra-sensory functions

* Increase knowledge absorption by participating in conscious bio-etheric energy exchange

* Attain a working knowledge of etheric-related capabilities such as precognitive event recognition

The easiest analogy to recognizing etheric energy is that of electricity. Had mankind never harnessed the natural phenomena of electrical current, entire civilizations would have evolved in the absence of telephones, computers, televisions, and an array of other technologies that now seem second nature in our daily lives.

Though a closely integrated element of both individual and collective existence, bio-etheric energy and its uses have only begun to be identified and embraced by society. As we seek to become fully acquainted with this energy type, a new, yet common understanding of etheric energy and its properties has presented itself: the energy exists, and the ultimate question is how to make complete use of it.

Harnessing the Intangible

In seeking to gain a working comprehension of bio-etheric energy, one must be willing to adapt a new dimension of faith, both in self and in the Universe. Faith is a plain transition between the physical, and the etheric; the tangible, and intangible. In bridging the gap between science and the unexplained, faith allows for confident progression into new endeavors to gain additional understanding of the mind and body.

Because mastering the properties of bio-etheric energy includes the development of abilities or metaphysical advantages often regarded by society as paranormal, spontaneous occurrences of precognitive event recognition, remote viewing, telepathy, or other etheric-related abilities are commonly dismissed as subconscious “noise.” This misnomer can be attributed to the school of psychology, whereas the science of bio-etheric energy and its related properties are based in the field of physics.

From a physics perspective, bio-etheric energy can participate in the transfer or exchange of particle energy with other bio-etheric bearing life forms through an exchange of nanophotons, or energy particles smaller than that of ordinary photons.

In theory, nanophotons have the capacity to pass through solid matter and travel at speeds significantly greater than the speed of light, and are capable of transportation between predefined destinations through the fabric of space-time. The smallest building blocks of existence, nanophotons allow for the exchange of “information” between beings capable of utilizing the neural receptors responsible for decoding bio-etheric energy.

Brain Training

Harnessing bio-etheric energy and related abilities requires a focused effort to flex and exercise the frontal lobes, or the region of the brain associated with bio-etheric activity and interpretation. This “training” is similar to the efforts necessary to acquire control over equilibrium and motor functions when learning to walk. Later in life, frontal lobe development is analogous to learning to write with the opposite hand. Although a challenging task requiring determined effort, exercising the frontal lobes is necessary to stimulate the neural receptors responsible for interpreting bio-etheric energy.

There are a number of exercises designed for frontal lobe development, both basic and advanced, many of which are available on the Internet or in related texts. While most of these activities can be performed anywhere with little preparation, a quiet, comfortable atmosphere will provide the maximum result from each training session.

Frontal lobe exercises, such as meditation and memory retention activities, and even simplistic biochemical enhancements such as brainwave stimulators or incense will effectively stimulate the synaptic pathways and neural regions associated with etheric energy interpretation.

What to Expect

Increased stimulation of the frontal lobes will promote spontaneous etheric response. Contrary to preconceived opinion held by some individuals who have yet to achieve a strong working knowledge of the energy, increased etheric control will compliment, rather than complicate, traditional thought processes and mental activities, both voluntarily and involuntarily.

A few results of increased etheric control include:

* Knowledge is retrieved with greater accuracy and speed, with less effort

* Increased empathic ability, allowing for more precise interpretation of others’ emotions, intentions and honesty

* Advanced sense of self (right and wrong, patience, will power)

* Expanded problem-solving abilities, creativity, and cognitive comprehension skills

Recognizing the emotional and physical responses associated with controlled etheric activity will allow for increased control of bio-etheric abilities, long-term. Interpretation of etheric information has a distinct, unique flavor as compared to internal dialogue or imagination. Differentiation between these independent streams of neurological feedback will improve as focus on etheric activity improves.

It is important to note that abilities and skills associated of increased etheric control are not limited to more commonly discussed processes such as precognitive event recognition, remote viewing, or even telepathy. Just as advances in modern technology resulted from an increased understanding of the application of electricity, advanced etheric control will present new applications of the control to existing functions.

As you begin a program for increasing bio-etheric control, write down your etheric-related experiences as they become evident to you. Your abilities and their accuracy will notably increase over time. Recording your progress will provide tangible benchmarks for charting progressive development.

Advanced Techniques

Those with an existing or advanced comprehension of etheric energy will benefit most from direct employment of related abilities to maximize and increase identified potential. Recommended exercises for individuals with developed or expanded bio-etheric control include:

* Target- or beacon-based Controlled Remote Viewing (CRV) sessions

* Precognitive forecasting activities, such as previewing playing card colors, suits, and numbers

* Precognitive event recognition

* Telepathy between parties with equal or greater skill

Both independently and as a collective, as we begin to explore and cultivate a complete understanding of bio-etheric energy, the potential for application of this energy to civilization is virtually limitless. Like any skill, development of etheric energy control requires a disciplined, focused effort to achieve notable results. Accomplishment of a thorough familiarity with bio-etheric energy and its purposes may enrich mankind in ways yet to be considered.

3 Tips for Renovating Restaurants on a Budget

Renovating a business space where people converge such as a restaurant can be such a big undertaking. For one, there is almost very minimal time with which the restaurant can be closed to do the renovation. As a business entity, it has to stay open to make money. Second, restaurants deal with food and there is nothing that does not mix more than a full-blown construction and food preparation. Combined, it’s the best way to get a headache just from a logistical stand point.

But renovating a restaurant is as important as changing its menu. Patrons don’t just eat with their mouths, but also with their eyes and with what they feel, and giving the restaurant a new look and feel answers that need to feel like they are dining somewhere new. So without further ado, here are some ways to take on this major project, without breaking the bank:

1. Board up like a pro

To prevent a logistical nightmare, take the time to board up the restaurant strategically. Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to close the restaurant altogether for as long as you plan ahead. You can renovate the restaurant in parts and to do this, your contractor should be able to achieve this properly. The board up should be up to the ceiling and should have its own entrance. It’s basically like building an impenetrable fortress inside the restaurant. Nothing should be able to come out or come in the board up. You can decorate the board up façade so it meshes in the interiors of the restaurant as well.

Speaking of contractors, make sure to hire a team with a project manager. Remember, time is of the essence and having a professional work for you solves half of the problem.

2. Look at other restaurants

Instead of shopping for new equipment, look at existing or closed restaurants. These places are surely looking to liquidate their wares including plates, forks, bowls, and other cooking items aside from the stainless steel equipment. The best part is that they will sell this to you in bulk and in a complete set, thus giving you the chance to get an ample discount on what is usually a very expensive shopping expedition if it’s all brand new.

3. Be smart with the fit outs

Although you can go a bit more creative on the furnishings, the best way to save on renovations is by adhering to standard sizes. This helps you plan out the space smarter and you can be sure the equipment will fit, with no need for costly customization. Apply this on the whole restaurant with the help of 3D rendering to make the sizing precise and accurate, including lighting fixtures, restrooms, kitchen, and point of sale areas and you will really see a considerable drop in your budget needs.

Doing so is also very sustainable as it makes the maintenance of the place a complete breeze as you do not need to search far and wide for items to fix your restaurant with.

Tiffany Pendant Lighting

Tiffany Pendant Lights are one of my favorite things to add to a home. They usually use vibrant colors that add a wonderful pop of color to the room. This style lamp was first created in the late 1800’s and they were all hand-crafted. Louis Comfort Tiffany was one of the first involved with Tiffany lights, hence the name Tiffany. He started a business in which was an interior design company focused on stained glass.

I have several Tiffany Style lights throughout my home. I recently installed two Tiffany pendants hanging over my pool table. It gives the room and the table an extremely sophisticated look and it really makes the room.

There are many different styles of Tiffany pendant lights. Some come with designs, like your favorite animals or your favorite flowers. Others are just simple and the colors alone make this beautiful light. Its actually not to complicated to create your own Tiffany Style lamps, as long as you have the right tools. All you need is glass, cardboard, a solder and copper foil. You’ll also need the colored glass.

Here’s a brief guideline on how to make a Tiffany light. Its always made with a copper foil method. The first step consists of sketching the pattern or design on a thick and heavy piece of cardboard. Once you have it marked, then glass is placed over the cardboard and proceed to trace it. Now that you have the pattern on the glass, its time to cut the glass to match the shape. Copper foil will be used to cover the edges, only after the glass has been cleaned. The copper helps stick the pieces together. Now once the lamp has been placed in the right position (meaning its fully together), its time to break out the solder. Solder the edges together to create a strong hold.

10 Years Of Looking At The Hole While Putting

I have been using this method of looking at the hole for “Putting” for the past 10 years and for me there is no better way!

I first started using this unique putting method after reading a book by Tim Gallwey called the Inner Game of Golf. Still my favourite book on “How to take your golf game to the course”.

There are some significant benefits to this putting method of looking at the hole…..

1.Your head remains’s still as your eyes are looking directly at your target…..there is no need to take a peep!!!

2.You have a clear sense of direction

3.Since you are not looking at the ball there are no mental blocks or fear of making a fluent stroke

Golf is one of the few targeting type sports where you don’t actually look at your target while perfoming the action to hit the target. Sports such as basketball, darts, baseball, and bowling or rely on you focussing on a target. Whatever you are focussing on your body will do it’s best to perform the necessary action of hitting that particular target.

When I first tried this putting style I concentrated on using my hands and wrist’s to make the stroke. If I were to be totally honest my putting during this transitional stage was as good as any golfer at my club. Most of my playing partners could not believe I could sink putts by looking at the hole. What astounded them was the amount of long distance putts I dropped…..they could understand how this technique would work for the short putts but NOT the long putts.

Some were even moved to say that it was cheating and the technique or method should be banned…..this only happened in “Match Play” when I would sink putt’s to win the hole or the match. When you do something different that works people notice and I have to laugh when they say “I see it but I don’t believe it”.

Since becoming an accredited PuttingZone coach I have incorporated the use of the shoulder’s and NOT the hands into my putting routine of looking at the hole. This one change has allowed me to make more birdies than I ever made before.

I did a bit of research on “putting while looking at the hole” and I was absolutely stunned to find that Golf Magazine had published an article by David Dusek (Deputy Editor,Golf.com) on this very subject. They actually published result’s of a research study carried out by Eric Alpenfels(Golf Magazine top 100 teacher) and Dr Bob Christina. They tested 40 players with handicaps ranging from 8-36.

When asked to putt while looking at the hole to distances of 28-43 feet the average length of the putt’s ended up 28 inches short…….when asked to putt normally the golfers left themselves short by 37 inches. That extra 9 inches can make the difference between 2 putt’s and 3 putt’s.

So what can I say……looking at the hole while putting is a very viable proposition for golfer’s who have an open mind to making positive changes in their putting.

6 Tips to Consider for Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lights are great for not only highlighting the home’s landscape and architecture, but can give an extra measure of security and makes it easier to navigate paths at night. There are plenty of different styles of lights so it makes sense to carefully consider the options. Here are six useful tips for selecting the right outdoor lights:

Lighting plan

Start the process by creating a lighting plan. This can help to identify the areas at the front, sides and back of the property that can benefit from nighttime illumination. It is possible to walk around the property in the evening with a flashlight to determine how the extra light will impact the landscape and exterior features of the home. Also, make sure to find the isolated and dark areas that could have an impact on safety.

Layer the light

The outdoor lights can vary from accent, task and ambient. It is best to use the right type of lighting to match the specific application. The accent is a decorative type of light, such as the table lamp and can complement the task and ambient lighting to create the stylish look. The task light is used for a specific application such as lighting up the area around an outdoor grill. Ambient light is the preferred choice for creating the general illumination.

Energy saving

Energy saving fixtures are appreciated by those that wish to save money and conserve energy. A reliable choice for this is the energy-efficient LED bulbs that emit a similar quality of light as the incandescent bulbs, but have the benefit of using nearly 75% less energy. On average, an LED light has the potential to last up to 40,000 hours, which can amount to nearly 10 years of regular nightly use.

Solid construction

The preferred light fixtures for the outdoor environment are constructed in weather-resistant materials. A preferred material is able to handle all climates, while also being UV resistant and non-corrosive.

Controlling the light

There are several options to control the lights, such as the timers, motion sensors and dimmers. The timers and motion sensors are great for saving energy because they only activate when lighting is needed. Also, there are the photocells that run on solar energy, and don’t cost anything to use beyond the initial purchase price.

Protect the night sky

A further consideration with the choice of light includes being a good neighbor and placing the lights in areas that aren’t likely to impact the property next door.

Alternative Speed Bump Uses – Water Barrier/Gully

Believe it or not speed bumps can be an excellent way of keeping water from running into your garage, or flowing along a driveway during heavy rain. We have all seen drains that would cope fine in a normal rain storm being overwhelmed during heavy rain. This can cause huge destruction to property as water quickly finds its way downhill, and if your garage is at the bottom of a sloping driveway, then all that water is going to go straight inside!

This is where a carefully placed speed bump can save the day and keep water from ruining your property. By placing a bump across a driveway the water will be forced to divert off to the sides, on to a lawn or into another drain that can cope with the volume of water.

The speed bump will give the last drains right before your garage door a chance of keeping up with the water flow. The benefit of using a bump other than a normal flood type barrier is that it can be left in permanently and even used as a parking block. Meaning that your property will be ready for the rain even when it strikes with little notice. They are also available in different heights allowing you to choose the level of defense you need.

When using speed bumps to keep water from flowing into your garage or down a driveway it is advised to use silicon sealant or similar between the speed bumps, and under the speed bumps. This will prevent water from seeping between and under the bumps.

The Benefits of Effective Cable Trunking

Cable trunking is an ideal way of hiding, disguising and managing cables and wires. PVC coated, galvanised flexible conduit, small fibreglass cable trunking and large industrial steel trunking are just some of the cable trunking options available.

Most businesses have a server room which houses the core of their computer network and data. Such equipment inevitably comes with a mass of interlinked cables, which is a fire risk when they’re not managed properly. Without a carefully thought out cable management strategy, a server room can soon have a tangled mess of wires and cables across floors and doors.

Many fires start in server rooms as a result of malfunctioning or overheating electronic equipment. Burning cables add to the problem through toxic smoke which is generated by the burning of rubber insulation and the exposure of live electric wires. Therefore, it is worth well worth purchasing cable trunking which is fireproof. One fireproof cable trunking solution is Kopex Flexible Conduit. This provides a flame retardant cable solution made from a galvanised steel core and a PVC cover which is both flexible and versatile.

Trunking pillows are also an effective cable trunking solution, and can lower the risk of fire. They are made of fire resistant compounds and are used to plug holes bored in walls and ceilings for electric cables. If holes are sealed, this will reduce the likelihood of the fire spreading to the next room.

The best time to install cable trunking is when equipment is first being installed. The route of each cable should be planned and executed in an efficient and methodical manner. This should lower the fire risk and make management of the wires easier.

Cable management kits are available which supply a range of items to help you organise your cables effectively. These items include cables wraps, ties, clamps and trunking to help tidy cables and increase airflow around them.

Cable management problems not only look unprofessional, but are a major health and safety risk. Individuals who work in close proximity of the server room could trip over a loose cable, which endangers both the member of staff and the equipment. You may think that a few loose cables in an enclosed room won’t make a difference, but if your business ever relocates to different premises, it will be much easier to move and unplug the server, if the cables and wires have been properly managed.

Steel conduit is renowned for its durability to ensure cables stay protected, but they are very heavy and lack flexibility. In recent years steel wire baskets have grown in popularity. Steel wire baskets not only achieve similar results to steel conduit, but their versatility and low price allows it to meet growing budget and time constraints as well as faster installations.

Another material used in cable trunking is glass reinforced polyester. These materials are cost effective and also contain fire retardant, self-extinguishing and anti-corrosive properties which ensure utmost safety in hazardous environments.

When fitting cable trunking make sure you are meeting all the relevant safety guidelines. Large cable trunking may need to be installed by an expert to ensure its fitted properly.
