  5. Scaffolding Problems Washington State regulations mandate that a “competent person” must supervise erecting scaffolds. This is someone capable of identifying hazards and who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures. Despite these regulations, scaffolding accidents still occur through unsafe access to scaffolds and tools and other materials falling off scaffolding and injuring workers.
  6. Collapsed Excavation Walls and Trenches – In the state of Washington, collapsed excavation walls or trenches kill an average of two workers each year. The weight of soil (2000-3000 pounds per yard) prevents a trapped worker from breathing, leading to death within minutes.
  7. Power Tool Accidents – These accidents are frequently caused by not using appropriate eye and ear protection. Nail gun injuries have increased each year making eye injuries quite common. It’s not surprising given that a nail comes out of the gun with the equivalent force of a .22 caliber bullet. Also, not having proper guards in place on the power tools can lead to cuts and amputations.
  8. Lifting/Body Straining – The number one cause of injuries, disability claims and medical costs in construction are soft tissue injuries-strains, sprains and chronic injuries. These are a result of lifting with the back instead of using the legs and not using panel lifters when carrying sheets of drywall, plywood, or siding.
  9. Vehicle Accidents – Forklift accidents are responsible for workers’ deaths each year in Washington. A common accident occurs when turning or maneuvering the forklift with the load raised. Rock and sand make up about 70% of concrete mix and can be a very good choice for earth friendly construction because they are naturally occurring materials and require little to no processing. The main energy consumption comes into play when they need to be transported great distances, which was already discussed.

Cement does require a fair amount of energy to process. That is one reason other sources of cementitious material is becoming more popular. Fly ash, for example has similar properties as portland cement, but is a by-product of power plants and is therefore a reused material. There are many other materials that are making their way into concrete that are less energy intensive to refine into a usable bonding agent. Some of these materials include naturally occurring pozzolans, microsilica, fly ash, and other proprietary ‘crete products.

I foresee a continual change in the actual mineral recipe of the cementitious materials used in concrete in the future. Along those lines, I don’t see any lack of demand for this diverse and beneficial construction material in the next decade or century. Concrete will be used in the future just as we currently use the dirt, timber and steel of the past. As we continue to make improvements in our products, we will be able to save money and reduce our impact on the world’s resources.

How to Calculate Space Heating Requirements

To enable you to understand the heat requirements of a space you need to understand how heat is lost from a space and how quickly this happens. This is to enable you to calculate the heat output you require and how quickly you need to heat a space to maintain the desired or design temperature.

Quick Rule of Thumb Route

Step One

Calculate the area of the space to be heated in m2

Measure and record the external or internal length in metres.

Measure and record the external or internal width in metres.

Example: Length 10m x Width 5m = 50m2

Step Two

Calculate the heat requirement of the space by using rules of thumb for different spaces.

Below are guides to heat requirements:

Living Room 60W/m2 21 Deg C

Bathroom 70W/m2 21 Deg C

Kitchen 60W/m2 16 Deg C

Bedroom 60W/m2 18 Deg C

Hall and Landing 60W/m2 16 Deg C

This is based on solid brick or block dwellings with cavity thermal insulation and double glazed windows.


Length 10m x Width 5m

= 50m2 x 60W/m2

= 3,000W

= 3 kW

This example can also be used to calculate the output required for a new boiler installation

Specific Heat Loss Calculation Route

To calculate the specific heat loss in a space you have to consider the temperatures of the outside space and the desired inside space. There is an accepted temperature criteria, which is – 4 Deg C minimum outside temperature and the desired temperatures as shown above in the Rule of Thumb step two.

To carry out the specific heat loss calculation you measure the space dimensions internally i.e. height, width and length in metres. Calculate the area of the windows in m2 and subtract this from the wall area and measure and calculate in m2 the ceiling and floor areas.

With the above carried out we can start to calculate the loss of heat through the material of the space e.g. Walls, floor, windows and roof or ceiling. In addition, calculate the heat requirements of the infiltration ventilation, from areas of the space that allow air into the space from outside from under doors or through windows with no draft proofing, etc…

This we use for air change rates within the space.

The way heat loss is calculated is by measuring the area and multiplying it by the known U value for the material. This is the thermal resistance of the material multiplied by the thickness of the material. There are tables available giving U values of materials e.g. an unfilled cavity wall has a U value of 1.6.

These values are calculated from the K value of the material multiplied by the thickness of the material.

Calculation example:

Space Temp 21/Outside -4/Air Changes 3/Differential Temp 25

Room: Living Dimensions x U Values = specific heat loss

Air 10 x 5 = 50 x 3 = 150m3 x 0.33 = 50

Glass 1 x 2 = 2m2 x 3.0 = 9.5

Walls (external) 10 + 5 x 3 = 45-2=43m2 x 0.45 = 19

Floor 10 x 5 = 50m2 x 0.10 = 5

Roof/Ceiling 10 x 5 = 50m2 x 0.54 = 27

Specific heat loss total = 110 x 25

Total Heat Loss = 2,750W HLoss Total

If we round up the result to 3,000w or 3kW you can see that we have lost 250W from our original rule of thumb calculation. This will not always be the case and if we had more window area, more outside walls or more air changes we would have more heat loss. In addition, it should be remembered that the rule of thumb is an approximation.

This can now be applied to each space and to radiator sizing calculations and schedules.

Historically a margin was always added to the calculation when radiator sizing of 11%. So, if we take our 3kW and add 11% it becomes 3.33kW say 3.5kW.

Docking a Boat Secrets – How to Approach With an On-The-Dock Wind

If you are anything like me, docking a boat can get a bit dicey with a howling, 15-20 knot wind blowing onto a dock, pier, seawall, or into your boat slip. So how do you best control your boat? One little-known method gives you a lot more control that the old method. Here are five steps that put you in command.

When you learned to dock your boat with a wind that blows onto the dock, your might have been told to approach parallel to the pier, stop one to two boat-lengths away, and allow the wind to push on your beam and set the boat onto the pier.

But there’s one thing about this method that you should know. This puts the wind–not you–in the command and control seat. Why is that?

Think of your boat as a four-sided structure. It has a bow, starboard beam, stern, and port beam. Those are your “docking control” points.

At any time, in any situation, in any force of wind or current–you have the ability to use two of the four “docking-control” points to take command of your small boat. These are the bow and stern. As long as you point one of those two points into the wind or current you have complete control.

When you start to move the bow or stern away from that position, you give up control. The maximum angle at which you surrender complete control–ninety degrees–occurs at the starboard or port beam. Learn this and plant it into your mind to develop a “master” mindset used by pro skippers worldwide.

Now, take a look at how you will use this secret to put YOU in complete control when docking a boat with a heavy wind or current that sets your boat onto a pier, seawall, or slip.

1. Prepare Your Boat for the Approach

Line both sides of your hull with boat fenders. Assign one crew the job of “roving” fender. This person will “rove” the boat to cushion any contact with the pier. Make a long spring line the same length as the boat. Attach one end to a cleat near the beam. Coil the bitter end and assign a crew to have it ready to put onto a dock piling or dock cleat.

2. Approach at a Perpendicular Angle

Position the boat so that the bow points about 1/3 back from where you want it to end up after docking. Keep your stern as close into the wind as possible. Use reverse propulsion to keep your stern into the wind. Approach at the slowest speed possible.

3. Drape the Line

After you arrive within a foot or two of the pier, loop the line around a piling or cleat forward of the boat cleat. Bring the line back to the boat. Keep slack in the line. Fend the boat with the roving fender at the bow.

4. Back Down on the Spring

Use the forward spring line to hold the boat in position and back the boat bodily into the pier. As soon as you back on the spring, the boat will angle toward the pier. At this point, the wind will take over to set the boat down onto the pier. Note that the bow will rest alongside the pier to act as a pivot for the rest of the boat.

5. Rove to the Stern

Shift the crew with the roving fender aft as the wind pushes the aft part of the boat to the pier. Fend off at any contact points to cushion the boat. Pass a stern line around a piling or cleat on the dock, aft of the stern cleat on your boat. This line, along with the forward bow spring, will hold the boat in position without fore or aft movement.
