Don’t Let Your Roof Ice Up – Use Heat Tapes!

When looking for ways to keep ice from forming on a roof, online searches reveal information about a heating cable system that eradicates icicles and ice dam formation efficiently and safely; can be purchased in most hardware stores and seen on many buildings located in snowy areas. This product is a type of “heat tape” that can be sliced and spliced to fit the design of any roof or gutter for snow-melting and de-icing purposes.

A roofing system with inadequate ventilation during wintry weather can lead to ice dams that form at the edge of a roof, hindering melting ice from flowing down the gutters and into downspouts for proper drainage. Eventually, melted snow water will stagnate and penetrate shingles, sheathing, and decking. An economical, effective, and long-term solution to prevent this event from occurring would be to install heat tape on roofs, gutters, valleys or even on downspouts.

The primary purpose of heat tape is to maintain or raise the surface temperature of problem areas to an above-freezing temperature. Placement of this product on the lower edge of the roof or in gutters, valleys, and downspouts can help keep the eaves free from ice or snow build-up. It is important to note that the structure will be completely free from ice or snow; however, it does create a clear path for the melted snow to drip down the eaves and into the drain pipes.

Types and Styles

This product can be purchased in fixed lengths, usually ranging from two to twenty feet depending on the style. It is also available in 120 and 240 volt versions with power options ranging from 50 to 3,135 watts. It can also be purchased in different widths ranging from one-half to three and one-quarter inch. In addition, the device must have a temperature control to meet changing weather conditions. Some commercial building owners prefer to have a thermostat installed so that when the temperature drops to a certain degree, the system will automatically activate.

Installation Process

It is very easy to install this device to prevent severe damage to a building. Before beginning installation, check the roof for any existing heating products. This is an essential safety check since many fires are the result of previously incorrectly installed de-icing cables as reported by United States Consumer Products Safety Commission (USCPSC). As an important reminder, always read the manufacturer’s guidelines as a safety precaution. Other important installation tips include:

  • Dry Roof – Placement should only be done when the roof is completely dry. It is best to plan the project ahead of time and schedule installation during the fall before winter weather hits.
  • Inspect Kit – Open the kit and check all included materials. It commonly includes a thermostat, control box, cable, and hardware for complete installation.
  • Mount Control Box – Place the control box in a location that is convenient, accessible, and close to an electrical socket, preferably underneath a soffit. The system should be properly grounded to avoid any accidental electrical shock.
  • Install Roof Tape – After attaching the control box, install the tape using a zigzag pattern, being sure to cover an area two feet from the roof line. The standard kit usually includes clips that can be used to hook onto roof edges. Lay the tape and sensor wires on the valleys, roof edges, eaves troughs, and drainpipes in order to cover those areas prone to ice dam formation.
  • Seek Help – If doubtful about the correct installation process, call an expert commercial roofing company to complete the project before the snow begins to fall.

Safety Measures

Safety should always take precedence in any project that involves electricity. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends the following safety tips when buying and installing heat tape:

  • Replacement – Heating cables that are more than three years old and not certified for longer use should be replaced with new ones to meet safety standards.
  • Proper Plug – Make sure a three-pronged plug is used and properly grounded.
  • Use GFCI – Always utilize a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
  • No Overlap – Avoid overlapping the tape over itself unless allowed by the manufacturer.
  • Correct Product – Use only products designed for roofing applications.
  • End-Cap – Always seal the end-cap and keep it away from the ground to prevent moisture.
  • Thermostat – If a thermostat is included, follow the manufacturer recommendations about the correct placement.
  • Maintenance – On any existing heat tape, check for signs of deterioration (discoloration, charring, cuts, and breaks).

Knowing about heat tape is essential to decrease the risk of a roof leak forming during winter conditions. With the aid of a thermostat, heat tape can prevent the formation of ice on roof edges. This project can be handle alone; however, it is often better to seek assistance from a roofing company because for safety reasons. So don’t let a roof ice up – use heat tape to melt any problems away!

Craftsman 12 Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 09-17438 Review

I bought the Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool two months ago to test out and review.

Nextec Multi-Tool

I used the circular saw blade to trim a 1 X 6 out in the yard. I used the flush blade to cut the bottom of a door jamb so I could install tile in the bathroom. I used the carbide blade to clean out the grout so I could replace a 6 X 6 tile that I put in wrong. I used the scraper blade to remove some double sided tape so I could put in a new door weather seal. I used the sanding pad to sand a leg on an adirondack chair before I painted it. I used the rasp to change the angle on a chair leg brace.

I did all this without dragging out a cord, a sander, an angle grinder, a wood file, a putty knife, a circular saw or a hammer and chisel. I did all of these tasks easily and in a lot less time than it would normally take. I did all these tasks with just one tool!

There are a lot of similar multi-tools on the market. The Craftsman Multi-Tool is not the first and it is not the best, but it is the best value at only $99. And it’s cordless! It is similar to the Bosch PS-50, Fein Multimaster, and Dremel Multi-Max. The Craftsman multi-tool is like the others and is even compatible with the Fein accessories but it’s a lithium-ion cordless multi-tool for only $99 (The Dremel Multi-Max is corded for $99). And as a bonus, like the Fein Multimaster, it comes with an integrated dust bypass vacuum adapter so you can hook it up to your shop vac or dust collection system.

I don’t consider the Craftsman Multi-tool as a heavy-duty tool. In fact the tool will get hot around the battery area if you use it on too large a task (3 to 4 batteries in a row.) It is just a great tool for those special small to medium jobs around the house that I have all the time. It is a great “around the house” tool. If you need a tool like this to work for you all day long or have a large project like scraping an entire house before painting you really should buy a heavier tool like the Fein Multi-Master.

NEXTEC Multi-Tool Features:

The Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool comes in a handy carrying case along with a 30 minute quick charger and six attachments. The Multi-Tool is powered by a 12-volt Lithium-Ion battery.

Some of the key features of this tool are:

15000 OPM/ 2.8 oscillation angle

LED work light

includes 6 accessories (blades and sanders)

Soft-grip Handle

Compact Ergonomic design

Integrated dust bypass with vacuum adapter

Powerful, compact motor

Secure accessory mount

Powered by 12 Volt Lithium-Ion battery

30-minute quick charger with LED charge indicator:

Quickly charges the battery and features a charge indicator that visually indicates the charging status.

Compact ergonomic design: ultra compact for use in tight spaces Lithium-Ion Power: Lighter weight, better performance and longer shelf life.

Weight: 1.8 lbs with battery Accessories I recommend buying an extra battery.

If you already own an Craftsman Auto Hammer or any of the NEXTEC Line you already have a spare. You can order spare battery and blades through ToolBoxHero (see link below)

Final Thoughts:

The Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool performed very well when using it the way it’s meant to be used. This tool is not a replacement for the heavy-duty plug in versions like the Fein Multimaster. It is a great cordless multi-tool that will work very well around the house. The price really makes the Craftsman Multi-Tool shine!

Is the Design Engineer Extinct?

The design engineer has long been considered instrumental to the product development process. Typically, this breed of engineer is able to think both conceptually and practically, with strong mechanical engineering skills, as well as a familiarity with structural and electrical engineering. As such, they are integral to the engineering process and those working within design engineer job roles are often required to demonstrate their capacity to do everything from developing advanced mechanisms, to analysing manufacturing methods and constructing complex geometry, amongst other engineering skills.

However, in recent years, the number of candidates who meet the criteria for design jobs has dropped dramatically, prompting the question, 'Is the design engineer extinct?' While many graduates may have developed specialist skills in computational fluid dynamics or finite element analysis, for example, few hold the wide range of skills needed to become a design engineer.

If this breed of engineer is not becoming naturally extinct, then it may be that they are being gradually wiped out by computer-aided design (CAD) engineers. An increasing number of CAD engineers are now applying for roles which require more extensive knowledge. As such, they are not always qualified for the position, and should their application be successful, they may find it difficult to progress in the role.

Design engineers will usually possess a range of CAD skills themselves and are usually required to practise Top-Down techniques, perform structural analysis and use CAD to put together engineering strategies at a conceptual level. However, the reverse can not usually be said of those who specialise in CAD alone. CAD tools are certainly useful in streamlining the development process, but modelling software and simulation techniques are not always sufficient for more advanced engineering projects. Therefore, while the supply of design engineers might appear to drying up, the demand for individuals who can offer a more developed skillset is likely to remain.

Without the ability to understand the various strains of engineering at a fundamental level – as a qualified design engineer is able to – CAD engineers are unlikely to be able to truly fill the shoes of their engineering counterparts.

CAD engineers are themselves at risk of seeing CAD-specific roles (for which such individuals would be well-qualified) being overrun by designers without an engineering degree. The motivation for employers is simple: candidates without advanced qualifications can often be less costly. Yet hiring under-qualified candidates at any level rarely proves cost-effective in the long-term, and may result in additional hires needing to be made or a lower quality output.

If the design engineer is not yet extinct, they have certainly become rather elusive. Within Europe and Asia, an increasing number of engineers are raising their profile by taking on technical leadership roles, whereby they are required to oversee fundamental product development. However, it is the breadth of knowledge held by design engineers, which is likely ensure longevity for those looking to carve a career within this area of the engineering industry.

Warhammer Fantasy – Starting An Empire Army

I have started playing Warhammer with 40K, and after a couple of games I joined a Mordheim campaign. Since then Warhammer Fantasy came always first than Warhammer 40K. I have been playing Warhammer Fantasy since the end of 2005 and I see myself as a newbie in Warhammer.

Enterprise. I just want to give some information to the beginners.

1. Rank and File

An average Empire Soldier is just WS3 / 4 and T3 which means most races will hit us easier and kill us easier. After a close combat it is more probably the opponents will cause more wounds on our unit than we do. As you should know each rank of 5 models you have at the start of combat phase will give you a rank bonus. (Maximum 3) Which means if you have 20 soldiers in a rank and file unit you will have 3 victory points with ease. And then you will add 1 victory point for the standard bearer so do not forget to take standard bearer. But if the enemy is also a rank and file unit? Here is the answer;

2. Detachment System

A states troop unit can have 2 detachments, I always take 1 unit of 9 (3×3) halberdiers and 10 handgunners. If the enemy charges you your shooty detachment can support fire (and does not take the -1 to hit as he is not the one being charged at.) And may panic the enemy unit. If the enemy does not panic and reaches you, your close combat detachment -here my halberdiers- can counter charge and may take the rank bonus from the enemy. Which means in a 20 men unit you may have +3 for rank bonus +1 for charging in flank (if your halberdiers are 5 men strong at the end of combat phase) the wounds you may have given to the opponent. If you charge the enemy the shooty unit will not support you, but your close combat detachment will support charge.

3. Black Powder

The Empire has most of the best warmachines in Warhammer Fantasy. We have great cannon for tough targets, mortar against close packed infantry groups of low toughness targets (like goblins, skaven, elves …), hellblaster (I usually take 2 in 2000 points) which makes the enemy think once more before advancing, hellstrom rocket battery for close packet high toughness targets (like orcs ..), handgunner with 24 "range and armour piercing rounds, pistoliers for moving and shooting (shooting hard) and outriders for mobile handgunner unit. You can outshoot most of the opponents, and eliminate them before coming to you.

4. Knightly Orders

Empire Knightly Orders are the only cavalry unit in the whole Warhammer Fantasy world with the full plate armor which give 1+ save with barded warhorse. (Chaos Chosen Knights also have 1+ save) Which makes knightly orders a reliable unit. The only thing you should aware of if you charge an outnumbering rank and file unit if your knights do not cause enough wounds (generally 3-4) they will lose the combat. For this reason;
– Have 10 model knight units (Unit strength 20 and 1 rank bonus)

– Always give musician (If they break you can rally them easier.)

– Try to charge the enemy in flank (+1 flank charge bonus plus the enemy will lose his rank bonus)

5. Leadership

As average troops' leadership value is low, support your troops with a high leadership general placing it in the middle of your lines.

For a starting force you should have 2 troop choices and a general. I would recommend a state troop unit with a shooty detachment and a close combat detachment as the first troop choice. For your second troop choice you can field a small knight unit. Take a great cannon or mortar depending on the opponent and take a Captain as general. (He is a cheap high leadership provider .)

After some games you will want to enlarge your army, select your reinforcements depending on the gaming style you liked. If you are unsure ask your opponent for proxy gaming and try your army lists before you buy. Last but not the least; Do not forget: You are playing for the fun!

Home Insulation and What You Need to Know

Home insulation is important for houses in this age of high energy cost. Home insulation helps to reduce the cost of utility bill in terms of low energy usage. Moreover, it also boosts the values and livability of houses. Therefore, home insulation is especially a must for houses that are more than 10 to 15 years old which tend to be not insulated when they were built 10 to 20 years ago. Even if they were insulated at that time of construction, the insulation technology or the material might not be as good as today’s technology. Therefore, it’s better for you to replace or remodel the insulation if they were installed a decade ago.

The first step to installing home insulation is to identify areas of the house that need to be insulated. The general guideline here is to look at places where there is contact or leak between the interior of your house and the outside world. A good example of this scenario will be the window. During the winter, when you open the window, you can feel the cold air from outside tends to rush into the house. It’s the same in the summer where the heat will enter the house once the window is open. When this situation happens, heat loss or heat gain is occurring.

One thing to remember is that heat exchange is not restricted to just the window and the door. It also happens at places that are intact such as the wall, ceiling and the roof. Even though the wall, ceiling and the roof is a poor conductor, heat loss and heat gain will still occur. If there is a crack in the wall or a hole in the ceiling, heat loss or gain will be accelerated at a faster rate. Therefore, we need insulation to reduce or better eliminate completely the rate of heat loss and gain. With that being said, areas such as the walls, ceiling, basement, attic and the roofs are the critical areas that require to be insulated.

Once you have determined the insulation areas, next step is to choose the insulation material and types of insulation. Some common insulation materials that are affordable to most households are fiberglass, wool, paper, wood and cotton. The more expensive material is the popular polyurethane that is used in spray foam insulation. The polyurethane can cost up to several times more than the conventional materials such as fiberglass, wool and cotton. New and non-conventional insulation materials are being developed constantly in the market.

The good things about these newly developed insulation materials are most of them are made from recycle materials and are absolutely environmental friendly. With the advance of technology, scientists are constantly developing materials that are non toxic, water resistance and fire proof. One good example of a sophisticated insulation material is the one developed by Warmcel which is made of 100% recycled newspaper. Another one is the glass wool developed by Earthwool which is made of recycled glass and sand. One good example of non-conventional and environment friendly spray foam which is made from recycled plastic materials and renewable soy oils is developed by Heatlok Soy.

To recap on the importance of home insulation, houses that were not constructed with insulation installed are encouraged to be reviewed by contractors or better yet perform a home energy audit to check on the amount of energy that can be saved with insulation installed. Insulation not only preserves the limited non-renewable resource with the use of more environment friendly and recycled materials, it also boosts the sale value of the houses and makes the occupants comfortable.

Commercial Dishwasher Maintenance Guide

Commercial dishwashers and glass washers are very expensive pieces of catering equipment for the professional kitchen and that’s why maintenance is an essential part of owning a commercial dishwasher or glass washer to ensure you don’t have to spend money on unnecessary breakdowns or replacing a machine after it fails prematurely.

Too often do we see commercial dishwashers and glass washer break down due to lack of maintenance and mis-use because the staff employed in the kitchens do not take proper care of the equipment and are not taught to maintain the machine when necessary.

To improve your maintenance routine and ensure your staff take proper care of your glass washer or dishwasher I strongly recommend that you provide staff with this list and quick instruction manual for machine maintenance.

1. Rinse Dishes beforehand

When running dishes in a dishwasher it is always a good idea to pre-wash the dishes before putting them into the machine. Not only will this ensure that you are getting the best wash results from your machine but it will also help to keep the inside of the machine clean and stop food debris from building up and blocking filters, pumps and pipe work. It is not necessary to get your dishes spotless but just wash off any big lumps of dried on food before putting them in the dishwasher.

2. Blocked Pumps & Filters

Watch out for blocked pumps and filters. In a commercial dishwasher, teaspoons, lemon slices and other bits of food debris can be missed during the loading phase. If you are experiencing a problem with your machine that it wont fill, wont drain or bad wash results are occurring, just lift out the filter baskets and stick your finger down the pump hole (when the machine is off!) to check that nothing is blocking the pumps and filters.

3. Use the Correct Detergents

There are plenty of detergents available on the market and although nowadays most are of a suitable quality, there are a lot of cheap alternatives that are not up to scratch. Buy chemicals from where you got the machine as the supplier will always want to give you a tested chemical that goes well with their machines. Alternatively, shop around and try a few different brands. One brand may work well in your water area but worse in someone else’s so don’t rely on recommendations. Generally as a rule, you get what you pay for when it comes to rinse aid and detergents.

4. Keep your water softener topped up

The be all and end all of a commercial dishwasher or glass washer is ensuring that your water softener is topped up and running. Commonly overlooked, making sure there is a good level of salt and that the salt is regularly replaced in your softener is key to maintaining your machine. Lime scale may build up all over in places you cannot see and damage your elements, boilers and pumps. One sign that you have a lime scale problem is if the machine inside is going white or you see white water marks on dishes and glassware.

5. Run Lime scale Remover

Regularly, say once a week, run a cap full of descaler through your machine to keep it in tip-top condition. This is in-expensive and will help to prolong the life of your machine.

6. Consider a SupaWash Alternative

If you are struggling to get your staff to follow these instructions or are just finding it too much like hard work then consider an alternative. A supawash glass washer allows you to not bother with lime scale, water softeners or even detergent.

Snickers Chocolate Bar – A Short History

Snickers chocolate bar is made and marketed by US based Private Corporation called Mars, Inc. It is peanut butter nougat with caramel and peanut topping and dairy milk chocolate. Snickers is a popular chocolate bar sold around the globe and its annual sales is over 2 billion dollars.

In the early 1920s, Mars Inc made a very successful chocolate bar called Milky Way. It was the most popular chocolate bar in America between 1927 and 1929. It also allowed the company to develop new recipes for chocolate candies. It took more than three years to develop Snickers and was released in the market in 1930.

Snickers bar was named in the memory of a favorite horse at a farm of Mars family named Snickers. The horse sadly died couple of months before the new product was launched. The farm was named Milky Way Farm and it seemed suitable that the name of the farm should be given to the next chocolate bar.

Snickers was initially made by hand but later machines were used to increase the volumes and old way was no more practiced. During those times, the price of the first Milky Way bar was in 1920 for only 5 cents and the price of the Snickers bar was 20 cents in 1930 when it was first released.

There was not too much change in the Snickers brand during its first forty years. Mars were inspired to produce the Snickers mini candy bar in 1968 which were labeled ‘fun size’ and were which sold in bags having dozen or more.

Since Snickers was first introduced to the market in the 1930s, it had been known as Marathon chocolate in UK. However in the 1990s, Mars Inc consolidated branding exercise for bringing all of the corporations products under unified Mars branding that would not only be recognized locally but also globally.

The Marathon bar in line with global naming was to become Snickers. It featured the phrase ‘Internationally known as Snickers’ for a period of 18 months. Since then, all Marathon candy were branded Snickers in the British Isles.

There was controversy about the Snickers brand in recent years regarding advertisements perceived to be homophobic. It was notably during Super Bowl XLI when two mechanics sharing Snickers accidentally kiss when reaching the middle. It fueled protests that Mars Inc. was promoting discrimination against gay and lesbian people.

In England, there was also a similar controversy that was the result of an advertisement which featured Mr T. He was seen ridiculing a power walker and firing a rifle at his direction telling while him to do something more manly and seen eating Snickers at the same time. Protesters were annoyed on how the power walker was portrayed in an effeminate manner and Mars Limited was accused of homophobia.

Notably, the controversial ad has neither seemed to damage sales or cause any humiliation to the Mars Inc. Snickers brand has been more positively received in other parts of the world. Snickers is a major sponsor of surfing in Australia while it is known in Latin America for supporting youth activities. Snickers chocolate bars have become an important brand of Mars Inc and its sales have continued to increase.

Kofi Annan-The African Living Monument of the Century

Shall we ever be guided by this African proverb? “If the palm fruit of your farm is not meaty or fleshy enough, it is you yourself who must munch it in such a fashion that others may even envy you!”

Ghanaian/African Media

If the Ghanaian Media and for that matter the African Media do not know what is good for Ghana and Africa, other foreign media will dictate to Ghana and Africa what is bad for Ghana and Africa.

On Tuesday, January 23, 2007, the icon of the black race, the torch-bearer of global diplomacy, Busumuru Dr Kofi Annan the Immediate-Past Secretary-General of the United Nations, safely landed on the soil of his mother land, Ghana after over 40 years of selfless and dedicated service to humanity abroad.

One had expected that the following morning, almost all of the newspapers in Ghana, if not all at all, would have, for once, devoted their front page banner headlines for the arrival of this Living Monument of our time. Sadly, however, it was only a few newspapers in his land of birth saw the triumphant return of this hero of international diplomacy as front page news. (I am just wondering what the Nigerian media scene would have been like, if Kofi Annan had been a Nigerian-born African citizen).

This is why this writer wishes to doff his hat to the two leading public newspapers in Ghana, namely “the Daily Graphic” and “the Ghanaian Times”, for demonstrating why Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana, established the Ghana Institute of Journalism in 1958 for the benefit of African journalists.

My commendation of the Daily Graphic is even more profound because, apart from devoting the entire front page of the Wednesday, January 24,2007 edition to the arrival of Kofi Annan, the Paper also wrote an editorial on the matter under the heading ” AKWAABA, BUSUMURU!”

Daily Graphic’s Editorial

In this write-up, I will dwell on the salient points of the twelve thought provoking paragraphs editorial of the Daily Graphic that welcomed Kofi Annan to Ghana. It is important to bear in mind that the traditional significance of the expression AKWAABA in Akan and WOEZOR in Ewe is deeper than the English term “Welcome!”

Before I review the Daily Graphic’s editorial in question, it is relevant to say a word of appreciation to the Government of Ghana for having staged what could be described as STATE WELCOMING CEREMONY OF BUSUMURU KOFI ANNAN, led by the President of the Republic, H.E.John Agyekum Kufuor himself on his arrival in Ghana.

Most Ghanaians are only familiar with “State Funerals.” We seem to be a people who place premium on dead bodies rather than eulogising living beings. So when the Ministry of Information and National Orientation officially announced the welcoming programme of the great son of the land and called on all patriotic citizens and well-wishers to be at the airport to give a hero’s welcome to H.E.Busumuru Dr. Kofi Annan to Ghana, it was clear that a national event was at stake. As a nation we should not only wait for our state men and women to die before we give them state funerals. There is a Chinese proverb which says: “If you want to honour a man, honour him while he is alive.” Kudos to Ghana Government.

Amazingly, the first paragraph of the Daily Graphic’s editorial for that day started with a quotation from a book written by a renowned Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe. The title was IN ANTHILLS OF THE SAVANNAH. The quote reads:

“The cock that crows in the morning belongs to one household but his voice is the property the whole neigbouhood.” The Paper continues that the famous Nigerian writer notes that, it is always a source of pride to own the cock which serves the needs of the community, saying, “You should be proud that this bright cockerel that wakes the whole village comes from your compound.” This point explains why Ghanaians should be the first citizens on this planet of heroism and dwellers of the African continent to be proud that Kofi Annan originates from Ghana.

When this writer happened to be in Singapore in November last year, he had to use the name of Kofi Annan, then UN Secretary-General to indicate Ghana on the African map.

Apart from Kofi Annan, it was the National Football Team, the Black Stars that I was able to use to tell most people I came into contact with over there where I came from called Ghana. I told those who have never heard of Ghana that Ghana was the only country in Africa whose national team went beyond the preliminary stages in the just-ended world cup in Germany. Then people instantly started shaking my hands saying: “Your country is great!” This is why Ghanaians should not joke with Kofi Annan and the Black Stars at all. He is simply the Living Monument of the 21st Century.

The second paragraph of that editorial made one vital point: “Those who lived in the rural areas appreciate and understand the importance of the cock, especially the one which crows at appropriate times to wake up people to begin their daily economic activities. It is only the lazy who ignores the cock crow.”

Whoever wrote that particular Graphic’s editorial deserves a national award. I could not agree more with the Paper on this point. Today, most people, especially city dwellers cannot appreciate the value of cock crow because of availability of communication technology tools such as radio, television and even hall clocks and watches. People will readily tune to radio stations at dawn to listen to the voices of radio Pastors than to wait for the cock to crow. The sound some people will expect at dawn is the “korkorkor –korkorkorr” beats of the shoe shine boys in most cities in Ghana today and not the crow of the cock.

Do you remember that when the Network Africa section of BBC wanted to change the cock crow for its signature tune last year or so, the entire continent kicked against it? Even in the Bible, when Apostle Peter proclaimed that he would follow Jesus to the grave, Jesus looked at him and said : “Peter, Peter, I say unto you that even today, before the cock crows once, you will deny me three times!” That was the value of cock crow in those good days.

The third paragraph of the editorial said: “Busumuru Kofi Annan has been Ghana’s gift to the world through the United Nations, which he served with distinction long before he assumed the mantle of Secretary-General.” It went on,” Indeed, he did us all proud when, as the Chief Executive of the UN, he did not feel intimidated and stood up against injustice and unilateralism, even to the extent of disowning the United States in its misguided crusading mission in Iraq.” That was the humble Kofi Annan of Ghana. And if you are a Ghanaian and you are not proud of this man, then, you may have to go for check-up somewhere beyond this planet.

Another wonderful point the editorial made was that : “Busumuru Annan carried to greater heights the image and integrity of Ghana which had been brought to bear on the UN system by our illustrious first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Alex Quayson Sackey, Dr Robert Gardiner, Kenneth Dadzie and E.Y.Amoako (Dr). This is an indication that before Kofi Annan, other sons and daughters of Ghana had played their parts at various stages in the global endeavour.

However, the editorial made it clear that: “He capped it all up when he led the UN to win the coveted Nobel Peace Prize.” The Paper then quotes a Ghanaian adage to the effect that: “A man came to play his part, not to do everything. Busumuru Annan has done his part and we are proud to receive him back home. In typical Ghanaian tradition, as when a cherished person returns home, we say heartily: Akwaaba, Busumuru Kofi Annan!!!”

Listen to this point in the said editorial: “We are mobbing Busumuru Annan today because when he was given responsibity, he discharged it with a conscience based on cherished and valued principles. We applaud him because he did not bow to pressure, nor did he condescend to any parochial interests.” As a matter of fact, it was this part of the editorial that motivated me to sort of review the entire view of the Daily Graphic of January 24 this year.

The simple question is: How many of us in Ghana or Africa and elsewhere, will be able to discharge our responsibilities with integrity and conscience? If Kofi Annan had not performed his duties as UN Secretary-General with conscience, he would have been devoured by the international media like a lion does to its prey. Do you remember what the international media did to him when his adult son, called Kojo was involved in some so-called oil-for-food saga?

The truth is that Kofi Annan is a human being and as such can err like any human being in the course of his duties. But for some one to work in the UN system for over 30 years or so and then served as Boss of UN for ten years without any concrete evidence of corruption against him, I can only characterise him as an angelic soul. I don’t want to say that he has attained perfection in this incarnation yet. But to paraphrase what God told Noah in the Christian Bible: “If I can find 10 of Kofi Annan’s type on this planet, there will be no more wars on earth.”

Graphic’s editorial therefore postulates that that unique leadership quality, gem, jewel, precious stone of character , demonstrated and exhibited by Busumuru Kofi Annan, “must be a great lesson to us all. Sometimes when people are given job to do, there are others who evaluate them positively only on the basis of the many favours they bestow upon certain interest groups, irrespective of whether such favours breach or give dignity to established principles.”

Graphic is of the opinion that it pays for public officials to be motivated and encouraged to discharge their duties with utmost commitment and dedication to the public interest. “More importantly,” it noted, “public officers must be unwavering in the discharge of their responsibilities in so far as they err on the path of the general good. Once they eschew selfishness, they are bound to succeed.”

In the concluding paragraph of that memorable editorial, the Paper wrote: “We are equally thankful to the government for acknowledging the worthy contributions of Busumuru Annan and also for its active participation in the welcoming process. That demonstrates that we recognise and appreciate our heroes. A Hearty welcome! Akwaaba, Busumuru Kofi Annan!!!” the Daily Graphic editorial ended.

On Thursday, January 25,2007, a day after the Daily Graphic’s editorial on Kofi Annan, the Paper carried another front page banner headline , screaming with joy: “KOFI’S ,MAGIC AT WORK:-His iconic nature pulls Mills to Castle, first time in six years.”

For that day, I commend all the Ghanaian media for magnificent job done. If Kofi Annan can use his mere physical presence in Ghana to attract all political opponents including Professor Atta Mills like magnet and drag them to the seat of Government for the first time in half a dozen of years, then you know the kind of soul we are talking about in the man. For that feat, the man must be rechristened as the Paramount King of Peace.

May I make two simple suggestions for the consideration of the nation?

1. The State Protocol must organise a Special Nation-wide tour for Dr. Kofi Annan to visit each of the 138 districts of Ghana. There he must be seen, touched and spoken to by all school children. The inspiration will be such that in the next 50 years time Ghana may produce more Kofi Annans for the world.

2. The Ministry of Tourism/Tourist Board must create a National Festival of Peace in commemoration of the Triumphant Return of Busumuru to the mother land and the bringing together of all political opponents at the seat of Government.

The day Dr.Kofi Annan will land in the Ewe land, he shall be hailed: TOGBEGA BUSUMURU, WOEZOR LOOOO!!!!! WOEZOR KAKAKAKAKA!!!!!!!

Celebrity Hairstyles – Short Hair

Have you been thinking about changing your hairstyle? Have you been looking to celebrity hairstyles for inspiration? If so, you may be thinking about a short haircut. If your hair is currently long, you may be nervous about making this type of a drastic change. With advances in today’s hair care products, there really is no reason to be worried. The following tips and tricks will help you to confidently show off your new do.

Short hair does have its benefits; it is easy to care for, doesn’t take long to style before leaving the house and perhaps best of all, short hair allows you to show off the sassy side of your personality. While this all may be true, it isn’t necessarily easy to accomplish. Thankfully styling aids can rescue you from short hair styling issues. Since shorter locks are in, there are a million and one products on store shelves that are made just for that length.

The first step to taking good care of short hair is keeping it clean. Washing short hair takes almost no time at all, making it a huge time saver in the morning. Any type of shampoo and conditioner can be used on short hair, as it tends to be strong and healthy all of the time.

Depending upon the celebrity hairstyles that you are using as an inspiration, you may desire a sleek short style or a fluffed up do. With the products on the market today, either of these wonderful hairstyles can be created using basically the same tools. After washing the hair, blow dry it but leave it damp, run a little bit of hair putty through your hair with your fingers. Now it is time to choose the hairstyle. If you are looking for sleek, finish blow-drying (on low) while brushing the hair continuously. This will produce the smooth type of celebrity hairstyles that you are going for.

If you are looking for the latter look of fun and sassy, you will make just a few changes in this technique. After running the hair putty through damp hair, it will be time to blow dry (again on low) and brush the hair in several different directions. After you have the look you are seeking, try lightly spraying the hair with a maximum hold hair spray. This should hold your celebrity hairstyles just right for the entire day.

Short hair is fantastic because it is so versatile, from sleek and smooth to fun and sassy, these celebrity hairstyles are favorites with fans as well. Short is not a hair length that everyone can pull off, but if you are one of the lucky few, it is well worth the try.

How to Write Ad Copy that Sells

When I write copy for my advertising clients, I always check to make sure the three key elements are in place. 1. psychology, 2. logic, and 3. creativity. These are three very different aspects of ad writing, which, when combined, produce a highly effective message. Master the technique of each, and create ads that really sell!

It does not matter which part you address when. You can write out a first draft and then go back and insert the missing aspects, or you can craft your copy piece by piece and then put it all together at the end. For the most part, I tend to piece together my message, but you can work however you'd like.

Advertising would not be advertising without psychology. How else would you persuade or convince people that your product is outstanding in its category? What other way is there to go about creating a need for what you sell? Persuasion relies on emotional appeal, and emotions are driven by our psychological make-up. A long time ago, someone thought up the AIDA method, which is good enough to serve my purpose in explaining the psychology of advertising. It's really very simple. AIDA Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

Attention: Capture your audience's attention right away, with a riveting photo and headline. Exceptional ads showcase headlines and images that work together. (Read more about this in the paragraph about creativity.)

Interest: If you wrote a good headline, likely they'll be intrigued and continue reading. Your ad copy is where you can isolate a fear, problem, concern or need of theirs. Then go right into:

Desire. Make them want what you have. Pose your product as the solution to the aforementioned problem. Build your case with examples, or even testimonials.

Action. Finally, tell your audience what to do. Buy Now! Cick here and save! It's amazing what just a quick directive will do.

The next key feature of your message should be logic. By logic, I'm referring to how you order the words and sentences in your message to make your point. A good writer knows to craft his message in an outline form- with the first paragraph driven by a main idea, and supporting sentences following that premise. Each paragraph should reinforce what's been said in the main paragraph. This is basic English, and it's the key to crafting a solid argument. You should be able to convert your sentences to bullet points if you had to- with each bullet logically supporting a main concept. In fact, you may even want to use bullets, as they're a quick way to sum up the benefits of what you sell with no extra words to dilute the impact of what you say.

Finally, creativity is what will give your ad presentation that POW, and your copy that extra sparkle that makes it interesting to read. Earlier, I mentioned headlines and images that work together conceptually. What I mean by this is a play on words that's reinforced by an image. This is the stuff of amazing advertising, the kind that brings home a Cleo or an Addy award! Think of those incredibly powerful Nike ads: Just Do It. Tell you customer something they will not forget, and use a dramatic photo to cement your message into their brains. Map out your long-term campaign, if you plan on having one, following the same creative concept in each ad. This is brand-building at its finest!

Infuse creativity into your written message. Write in a clever and / or amusing way, and make your ad stand out from the crowd. Use a tone that's appropriate to your audience. Choose words that belong to that particular genre.

At any point during the conception of your written material, you can brainstorm words or phrases that your audience uses and will likely respond to. I call this "learning their language." What this is, essentially, is imitation. Remember when you were a little kid playing make-believe? (Okay, maybe you don't – but I do!) Play make-believe now. To warm up, read some existing material that relates to your target group. Next, sit in a quiet spot and pretend you ARE your key customer. Write out a list of their expressions. I wrote web copy for a high-end caterer last month. To get my thoughts flowing, I made a list of words. "Sophistication, delectable, tasteful, elegant" so on and so forth. When I was done thinking of as many different words as possible, I was ready to inject them into my copy. Replace lackluster words with more zippy ones. But use your adjectives and adverbs sparingly! There's such a thing as copy overkill, and it will make you look like an amateur.

No matter how you approach the creation process, the most powerful ads require that each of these key elements are in place. Again: you can implement them in any order. When you're ready to bring it all together, take a good, hard look at your finished draft. Go through it with a fine-tooth comb. Get a couple of outside opinions. Step away, for a little while, and then go back to it when you've cleared your mind. Make your changes, then give it a final once-over. Your final presentation should be error-free and perfect in every way!

To those that think advertising is an easy or slap-dash process: not true at all! The greatest ads are a perfect fusion of three very different modes of thought, expertly combined and presented in a powerfully compelling and persuasive package. Realize this, and you're on the way to creating magical ad copy; the kind that sells!

How to Make Your Own Wedding Wands

Wedding wands are the fun alternative to tossing rice, birdseed, confetti or bubbles at the happy couple as they leave the reception and to welcome the new "Mr & Mrs" to the reception. Wedding wands are normally made of lightweight plastic with a long streamer of ribbon attached to it. Normally, the ribbon is personalized or contains a printed message such as "Happily Ever After" or "This Day I Married My Friend". Purchasing pre-made wedding wands require some assembly, so why not make your own? For the do-it-yourself, crafty brides this is an easy and relatively inexpensive project to make for your wedding.

First you will need to gather some supplies. First go to the local hardware or lumber supply store and purchase dowels (small round wooden spindles). Dowels are available in varying sizes and thickness. You will have to cut these dowels down as they normally usually come in long lengths; you should be able to get several smaller ones out of one long dowel. Sand down each cut side with a bit of sandpaper so that your guests can hold them without splinters.

Once you have all your dowels sized, cut and sanded visit your local craft store. Purchase paint, ribbon, and anything you may want to "top" off your wand with. You will also need a hot glue gun to attach the items to the wands. Once you have purchased all the supplies it's time to assemble and make the wands.

First paint the dowels and let them dry. Then cut ribbon to your desired length. The ribbon should be the full length of the wand. You can use more than one ribbon, if you choose. Using the hot glue gun, attach the ribbon to the top of the wand (dowel). Then to finish your wands off, top them off with a butterfly, a heart, a feather, or another object which reflects your wedding style.

Finally to display your wedding wands a nice touch is to purchase a large glass vase, fill with sand, stones or glass beads (all available at your local craft store) and simply place your wands in the vase. You can attach ribbon around the vase with a card which reads "Please take a wedding wand and wave in our joy".

Cruel Solitaire Strategy Guide

Cruel Solitaire is an unusual solitaire game, that many people think has a low success rate. Careful planning will allow the advanced solitaire player to win more than 50% of the games they play though.

The trick to winning cruel solitaire is to know when to deal from the talon. When you

first start playing cruel solitaire, it seems like dealing from the talon randomly

shuffles the cards, but this is not the case. A deal from the talon just redeals the

cards in the same order they currently appear.

This allows an advanced player to have some knowledge of what will happen when

the talon deal is done… which vastly improves the chances of winning every game of

cruel solitaire that you play.

There are certain easy-to-learn patterns that help with this.

If all the stacks to the left of a stack have 4 cards in them before the redeal, then

after the redeal, the card that is on top will stay on top.

For example, suppose the first 3 stacks appear like this:

Stack-A: 4 Cards

Stack-B: 4 Cards

Stack-C: 5 Cards with a 5 of Diamonds on top.

All the stacks before Stack-C have 4 cards in them, so after a redeal, the 5 of

Diamonds will still be at the top of Stack-C.

This is the same no matter how many cards are in Stack-C. So if the stacks are like

Stack-A: 4 Cards

Stack-B: 4 Cards

Stack-C: 2 Cards with a 5 of Diamonds on top.

Then the 5 of Diamonds will still be on top of Stack-C after a talon redeal.

But if an earlier stack does not have 4 cards in it, then the card will NOT stay on top

after a redeal.

So if the stacks are like this:

Stack-A: 5 Cards

Stack-B: 4 Cards

Stack-C: 2 Cards with a 5 of Diamonds on top.

Then the 5 of Diamonds will NOT be on top of Stack-C after a redeal.

Knowing this pattern will give you much greater control over cruel solitaire, and

allows for some powerful strategies that will vastly increase your chances of

Because of the above pattern, it does not always make sense to move a card to the

talon at the first opportunity. Instead, you can keep the card, and just make sure

that you don’t put any extra cards in the stacks to the left of it.

This way, you can keep redealing, to expose new cards, and you will KNOW that the

card will always remain in play. Only when you can’t make any more moves should

you then move the card to the foundation.

This gives you the most opportunity to keep playing, without blocking play. And it

leads to a general procedure, that you can follow to win a lot more games of cruel

Here is a procedure that will help you to win cruel solitaire. It isn’t perfect, and you’ll

probably make your own alterations to it as you get better at the game, but it shows

how to carefully play cruel solitaire to avoid blockages.

A – Find the rightmost card that can go onto the talon.

B – Do all the moves to the right of that card that you can, starting with highest rank

C – Redeal

D – Go back to A

Once there are no more moves that can be made to the right of the card, then move

the card in the stack to the foundation, and then redeal, and go back to A.

If no cards can play, then order all the cards you can, starting with the highest rank

ones, and then redeal.

That’s it!

You can definitely tweak this procedure to make it better, but I’ve tried to keep it

simple here, and it should allow you to play cruel solitaire a lot better than before.

Have fun!

Toxicity And Good Health

Toxicity has led to the rapid development of a vast amount of cleansing programs in the marketplace.

Where does toxicity come from? Let's deal with the most obvious sources. Number one the air we breathe. Look at any large city and count the smokestacks on the horizon. Look at the black clouds of smoke that billow from the smoke stacks of factories. The next time you are stopped at a light look around at the cars all around you. I'll bet you see smoke coming from more than one tailpipe. All over the world cars are sending that obnoxious smoke into our air.

And this can and WILL make you sick eventually (it probably already has – you just did not know that it was "this" that caused it).

You DO NOT need this stuff inside you !!

But what you may have decided was that you can not get rid of it anyway, so why try (rather just "accept-being-murdered-slowly" attitude – you would be surprised how many people have adopted this attitude).

Dr. Suzanne Godakunst authored the "Top Secret Fat Loss Secret" She has discovered an amazing, simple & fast way to safely lose fat & excess weight! She also can show you a "Secret Resource" you can use that will allow 3,000 times the "natural & safe bleaching" P0WER of oxygen to quickly REMOVE this dangerous and foul, filmy junk from inside not only your lungs, but flush it out of your blood and "guts!"

Most people do not know it, but "ozone" (O3) breaks down very quickly into O2 and O1. O2 is found in hospitals, and makes you feel pleasant (sort of euphoric).

But it's O1 that can do all the amazing miracle things !! In fact, harmful plaques, nasty life-threatening organisms, and toxins stored in your body pretty much DO NOT stand a chance against it (O1).

The ONLY problem is in how to "deliver" it safely and quickly into your blood & guts?

Although O2 is easy enough to find, O1 is next to impossible to find (except in water, where it does not have the same effect we're looking for here).

It must be found "locked into" something, then swallowed so it can dissolve once it's well underway inside you.

Inside her "Top Secret Fat Loss Secret" she gives you the ONLY good resource known that gives you EXACTLY the right "stuff" in EXACTLY the right "form" you must have in order to forever cleanse your body Free of all this (and other equally damaging) junk!

The Arc of Success – What is Yours?

What makes the arc of success for some people shoot quickly to the sky while other arcs of success fizzle, flounder and fold? Some become extraordinarily successful while others, perhaps even with more abilities, languish and go nowhere.

Why do some people appear to have success handed to them on a silver platter and others struggle all their lives and go nowhere?

For others the arc of success rises only in one area of their life and never gets off the ground in other areas. Incomplete success often robs them of the happiness and contentment their other successes should have brought.

Why does financial or physical success not always bring happiness and satisfaction and can even bring curses and heartache?

In the natural world, as in life there, there is a cause for every effect. A reaction creates an equal and opposite reaction or result. Often the cause lies in the way we are living and our habits. They can produce the positive or negative results we experience.

Leo Tolstoy realized this truth. “Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself.”

Effective application of the strategies of success (S.O.S) will produce effective results and keep the arc of your success growing! But we all need to start by defining what success means to us personally. Discovering your life’s purpose provides the motivation and drive that will help propel the arc of your success long into the future.

What Goethe realized is fundamental to propelling the arcs of success. “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.”

Different arcs of success

There are different arcs to the rising and falling of success for different people. Those who do become more successful than most do not all find it at the same speed. The arc of success is not the same for everyone.

For some, the rise of their arc of success is slow. Their biggest dreams remain hidden and dormant for years. As success finally begins to build their dreams spring into life providing a path for actions that build the arc of their success.

For others, the curve toward success is meteoric in its attainment. It appears to rise out of nowhere to staggering heights. Sometimes these people are propelled by the right opportunities and external circumstances that present themselves early in life and they utilize all the abilities they can muster to keep up with the successful momentum.

Open ambition may thrust some into the limelight and sometimes right onto the world stage at an amazing speed. Examples are child proteges, actors or actresses that gain early opportunity and fame.

Yet few of these early risers can maintain momentum or martial alternate means to propel them into ongoing success for a lifetime. Unless an individual has the internal drive, persistence and adaptability needed for lasting success, today’s success flees and tomorrow’s success is allusive. Yet the true test of greatness should be measured over time.

Senator Bill Bradley had it right. “Becoming number one is easier than remaining number one.” Be sure to get your arc of success projected in the right direction and soaring to great heights over the long run.

An Important Native American Weapon – The Bow and Arrow

It is easy to picture Native American braves thundering across the plains on their horses, bows drawn. They would be in pursuit of a buffalo herd. Daring and swift, these men would use these simple implements to provide food for the tribe. It is all the more impressive when you realize how basic the tools that were available to make the bow and arrows. Using only flint implements, the Native American artisan would first shape a length of wood. Sinew would be used for the bow string. After the arrow shafts were formed, arrow heads of flint, wood, or bone were made. Regardless of the simplicity of the craft, bows of great elegance and beauty were made.

They were only able to make the bows themselves because only stone tools were available to Native American artisans ,. Although composite bows are considered to be superior in performance to the self made bows, the Indian archer was still a match for anyone throughout the world. The excellent craftsmanship of Native American bows and arrows began from one piece of wood. It would have been chosen with care to make sure it was approximately the correct diameter. Only a minimum of detailing was possible due to the flint tools used to shape the bow.

Notches at the ends of the bow would hold the string in place. Sinew was the material of choice although sometimes plant fiber might be used for the string. Sinew is extremely strong and tough and was readily available from the animals they hunted. The design of the bow could be very simple and utilitarian, or it could be decorated. Feathers and fur were the favorite decorative items. Such was the strength of the bow and the skill of the hunter, that game of nearly any size could be brought down by one of these bows.

To bring this classic cultural item into your home today is easy. Any wall can be brightened and personalized with the addition of a Native American bows and arrows. Placing a bow and arrows over a fireplace will give a pleasing result. Decorating in a southwest style involves bringing various diverse elements together for a total look. You can bring the rest of the room into focus by adding a bow and arrows, or even several to form a collection ,. It can be especially effective when combined with such items as horsehair pottery, a collection of rattles or dream catchers. Native American bows and arrows can contribute a masculine touch to a den or a boy's bedroom.
