Easy Craft Ideas – Lip Balm Recipes

A cheap, easy craft idea! It is easy to make lip balm yourself from cheap, easy to find ingredients. You can use Vaseline, cosmetic grade beeswax or petroleum jelly asa base with essential oils for flavouring.

Small glass pots are suitable for your lip balm. If you have any old lip balm containers you can use these but they must be sterilised first. To do this wash them thoroughly with soap and water then rinse out with rubbing alcohol. Rinse with clear water then dry completely before use.

Colouring the Lip Balm

The lip balm does not need to be coloured but if you would like to colour it a you can use few slivers of lipstick shaved from a new lipstick. It is necessary to use new lipstick as lipstick that has been used could be contaminated with bacteria.

Melting the Base Material

The base material, whether it is vaseline, petroleum jelly or beeswax, needs to be melted before you can add the flavouring or colouring. You will need about two teaspoons for each small pot. There are a variety of ways to do this but whichever you choose only just melt the material. It does not need to be heated more than that. You can use a double saucepan to gently melt the material with steam or heat it in the microwave. if you use a microwave be careful not to overheat it. Place it in a small container then heat for only 30 seconds. Check to see if it is melted then heat again for 30 seconds if it is not. Continue heating for 30 seconds at a time until melting occurs. I find the easiest way is to place the material in a plastic bag, tie the ends, then float in some hot water. Once the material has melted snip off a corner and pour it out.

Once you have melted the base material the following flavourings can be added. Add only a small amount until the taste is satisfactory. essential oils must be handled carefully so make sure you read the safety instructions that come with your oil before you start. Citrus essential oils (eg orange, lemon etc) should not be used as they can make you skin more photosensitive.

Almond oil, vanilla oil, cocoa powder, tea tree oil, camphor, cinnamon, ginger, peppermint oil.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E acts as a preservative. Use a vitamin E capsule, puncture with a sterilised needle (hold it in a flame for a few seconds) then squeeze out the oil into you balm.

Moisturising Lip Balm Recipe

  1. 1 1/2 teaspoons cosmetic grade beeswax
  2. 1/1/2 teaspoons Shea Butter
  3. 1/2 teaspoon Jojoba oil
  4. 1/2 teaspoon almond oil
  5. 4 drops essential oil of your choice
  6. 3 capsules vitamin E

Carefully melt the beeswax with the Shea butter. Be careful not to overheat as this can make the Shea Butter grainy. Allow to cool slightly then add the Jojoba oil, the almond oil, essential oil and the vitamin E. Pour into containers and allow to cool. Add a few more drops of almond oil if necessary to soften the lip balm.

The above recipes do not include any sun protection. Some people are allergic to some essential oils so be careful if you make these as gifts.

How to Dig Out a Fence Post and Concrete Footing Using Hand Tools

Confirm Digging is the Only Option

To begin, evaluate the condition of the post and the concrete. Intact posts are a significant benefit and will make removal much easier. Posts in good condition that are still sound make their removal much easier. Also evaluate the concrete base (if present) – is it still solid or is it cracked/crumbling?

If the post is broken or the concrete is cracked there may be no other way than to dig out the post and concrete base, but before resorting to heavy manual labor try the Wood Post Puller method – its biggest strength is that is works in synergy with all of the lifting and digging methods to improve effectiveness and can easily remove posts and concrete bases that stymie other techniques.

After you determine there is no other way than to dig out the post, the following instructions will make this difficult task as easy as possible:

How Deep and How Much to Dig?

Dig a hole next to the existing post and concrete base approximately the same size as the post and base – don’t dig all the way around the post and don’t dig a hole that is larger than the post – it is just extra work digging and then re-filling the hole after you are done.

Do you know how deep the post is buried? The following are typical starting lengths before posts are set in the ground:

  • 4×4 wood posts will typically be 8 feet long set 3 feet in the ground
  • Metal t-posts will typically be 7 feet long set 2 feet in the ground
  • Galvanized posts are typically 8 feet long set 3 feet in the ground

If you are not sure, you can also measure the height of the post that is above ground (or the length of the piece if it is broken off) and approximate the length that is buried. Dig your hole at least 75% as deep as the post that is buried – for example, a typical wood post will be buried in the ground 3 feet or 36 inches, so dig down to a depth of at least 27 inches (36 x 0.75 = 27).

Digging Technique

Start the hole using a round point spade to get through any turf, roots, or other surface debris. As the hole gets deeper, a trench spade (also referred to as a ditch spade or trenching tool) will make the digging easier until you are down to about 16-24 inches. With shovels and spades you are using your legs and body weight to loosen the soil for removal – keep going until the hole becomes too tall and narrow to gain leverage at the bottom and then switch to the next stage.

This is where you transition to tools that are driven by arm power – the post hole digger and digging bar.

Tip – Choose a post hole digger that is smaller and lighter – unless you are a weightlifter type, the large heavy post hole diggers with the fiberglass handles will wear you out – the smaller, lighter post hole diggers are more maneuverable and will be more effective for most people, even if they sacrifice some reach.

Tip – Use a digging bar – a San Angelo bar is designed to make digging easier – it has a chisel head to loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole and to trim the sides of the hole, the other end of the bar is a point for breaking up difficult soil. Other types of digging bars will include a tamper head on one end for packing loose soil. Look for a bar that is high quality heat treated carbon steel – no need to pay extra for a brand name, digging bars are available at discount supply stores for approximately $25.

After you have reached the target depth, use the chisel head on the digging bar to clear out any soil remaining between the post and your hole. As you dig a round hole next to a round post foundation there will be a ridge that should be removed.

Removing the Post

Now you begin the removal process, the general concept is to tip the post into the hole you just dug. Start by simply pushing the top of the post towards the hole, it may break free from the soil and slide into the hole – then you can insert the pry bars underneath the post and concrete and lift it out. If the post doesn’t move, try jamming the pry bar into the ground next to the post or concrete footing on the side opposite the hole and pry it towards the hole. To increase the leverage from the pry bar, use a scrap piece of 2×4 or other wood on the ground to form a fulcrum and prevent the pry bar from sinking into the ground.

If the post still won’t move, use the digging bar to expand the hole around the circumference of the post footing by digging sideways. Continue prying the post out and enlarging the hole around the post until it breaks free and tips over into the hole. The critical part is to break the post loose – sometimes a few well-placed hits with a sledgehammer are needed for persuasion to get the post moving – after it moves even a fraction of an inch the war is won and the post will come out.

How to Grow Avocado

Fruit gardening and vegetable gardening is a very exciting venture. Growing Avocado's was one of the challenges I took on as a hobby fruit and vegetable gardener. When you are not an inhabitant of state with a tropical climate you can grow avocado's in containers.

So, if you're a fan of the avocado, chances are you already know how to grow avocado plants. Although the avocado tree is a tropical plant that thrives only in zones 9, 10, and 11, many gardeners grow avocado plants indoors, they grow it as a houseplant. Avocado plants are typically started from the seed in the center of the fruit. Many gardeners begin their avocado plants by piercing the seed with toothpicks and then suspending it (pointed end up) over a glass, vase, or jar of water. You can keep the water sweet by adding some charcoal in the bottom of your container. In two to six weeks, if the seed germinates, you should have a young plant, ready to pot. However, not all avocado seeds will germinate in this way. If your seed has not sprouted in six weeks, toss it out and try again.

Another method of how to grow avocado plants is leave the pit in the sunlight until is begins to split and then potting it in soil partly exposed like an amaryllis bulb or sweet potato vine. Use a four or five-inch pot to start your plant and set it in a nutrient rich potting soil that has good drainage. After your plant is about a foot tall, pinch it back to half. Pinching it back produces a rounder and fuller plant. Once your plant has filled its pot with roots, it's time to move it to its permanent home.

When you're learning how to grow avocado plants, do not expect fruit. Avocado trees take up to ten years to mature enough to bear fruit and indoor grown plants rarely last for that length of time. However, if you provide it with a moist soil, plenty of sunlight, and fertile soil, your avocado plant will be an interesting addition to your home container garden for three to five years.

Dent Repair – Hire an Expert or Do it Yourself?

Probably the most common dent you can get is from another car parked next to you. You neighbor opens their door to wide and your car gets damaged. Don’t get too upset, because it doesn’t take a very hard knock to pop a little dent. They may not have even noticed.

Other common ways you might have gotten it are from debris hitting your car at high speeds, such as rocks or gravel that get kicked up on the road, hail stones, and other falling or thrown objects. If the debris is thrown or falls with enough force, it can even cause a crack or chip the paint, which means repair is significantly more complicated. They are also possible from resting heavy objects against or on top of the car, so be gentle.

Should I bother getting it fixed?

Professional mending is very expensive and often people don’t think it’s worth the money. It does take only moments for a body shop to pop out a couple of superficial dents, but cracks, folds, and paint damage will take considerably longer.

A minor ding is probably best left ignored and can be fixed later before a sale or as more are acquired. However, large ones and those that are creased or show signs of damaged should be fixed immediately. Leaving these problems can result in large areas of damage or further cracking of the body.

Can I fix it myself?

Sometimes yes, but it also depends on how brave you are. If you’re not good at DIY projects, this might not be the place to start to learn. You can greatly damage the car with many of the common methods used, which is why you’ll just want to bring it to the professionals. Small dings on the doors or hood can often be popped out with your hands or a rubber mallet and small block of wood used on the opposite side to where the problem is.

Plungers can work on doors and there are kits, which work similarly by creating suction, can be purchased at most auto stores. If you have paint damage, unless you are experienced or plan on tackling the task of matching your factory job, you probably want to bring it to a specialist.

How much will it cost?

The repair isn’t going to be cheap, but if you shop around you certainly can find a reasonable price. Contact a few different companies. Some specialize in paintless repair, which is usually a lot more affordable than those that will require paint and possibly even body work.

Paintless repairs will depend on the size of the ding, but usually the cost hovers near the area of $200 to $400. Changes that requires some body work can cost upwards of $1,000, at which point you might want to get your insurance involved to cut down on costs.

Brick Repair – Mortar Matching

In the last five years, everybody is getting into the field of brick repair. I have seen this happening more and more. Foundation repair companies have started giving this service away as an incentive to help them gain a customers business. Many masonry contractors have taken advantage of this growing field, and made various proclamations. Even the local retail stores for home improvement have begun to carry special products for brick repair. This change in the industry can leave people misguided about who can perform these repairs, if they are being done properly, and weather or not these repairs should be left to a professional.

A leading symptom in people's homes that points them to foundation repair are the cracks in the bricks and mortar around a home. These cracks can be intimidating to a homeowner, and give leverage to a skilled salesperson. Many salespeople in the foundation repair industry use this leverage to make their sale by promising that they will fix these cracks in the brick and mortar. They generally offer this as a free service to the customer. Now, I am no genius, but I know that nothing is free. If they are giving this service away, they have to be charging for it some place. In addition, this free service may be "free" because they know that they are not delivering the quality that is available in the market and they do not want it to have any technical ties to the money they are charging for this service. It is a simple tactic. Over charge them here and give this away over there for free. You should be cautious of these methods, and make sure that you are getting the quality you deserve.

Mason contractors have performed masonry repairs for thousands of years. In these ancient practices the primary goal was to simply reinforce the structure and seal its surface. They were not concerned with restoring the beauty of the work. This has remained the practice up until the past ten years. Ten years ago Alamo Masonry saw the need for improving the industry of brick repair. They determined that the then current practices were no longer functional and that it could be done better. After careful study and analysis they wrote the guidelines for a proper restoration which include a minimum depth of repairs and an exact process for performing them, among many others. In conjunction with these guidelines, they also produced the first system for matching mortars in color and texture, and wrote a master formula. In addition, they wrote over 10,000 other formulas for individual color matches.

Since this has been introduced into the market, some companies have made boastful claims that they have been matching mortars for 20 years or more, and have only been in business for 6-8 months. There have been a couple of companies proclaiming that they created this technique. While most others have simply followed the market, and seeing that this is what the consumer is expecting, claim "Yea, me too." Some of these companies have gotten better at matching the mortars. You should be carful in the contractor you choose, and do not allow yourself to be "Olivered". Research your contractors through the Better Business Bureau or other accredited reporting agencies. This will ensure the quality you deserve.

Now even local home improvement stores are carrying various products for brick repair. All of these products are based on the antiquated methods of brick repair, and are not even close to doing it right. These products are generally sold to the do-it-yourselfers, and are quite enticing due to their simplicity and low costs.

There are products available for the do-it-yourselfers which are reasonably priced and will actually get the job done right. Two of these are the Brick Repair Guide and Mortar Matching Services. This guide tells you step-by-step how to do the repairs, and the mortar matching service is easy and reliable. You send them a sample of your mortar, and they match it and return the formula to you for your home. These certified mortar matches are available to everyone.

T3 Flat Iron Review

These days the T3 flat Iron is the hottest thing in the market. These hair straighteners have conquered the market world wide and everyone from young to old only wants a T3 flat Iron and nothing else. T3 Flat Irons are known for their quality and innovative products.

The T3 flat Iron is not very old in the market unlike other products. It was launched in 2004. However, there has been no looking back from 2004 primarily because the company promises quality hair care products. What makes the T3 flat Irons so special? The answer is pretty straightforward. Innovation! Lets have a closer look.

The first flat iron produced by this company was the tourmaline flat iron. This company was one of the first to use tourmaline in its products. Tourmaline is a semi precious stone which has 6 times more quality of negative irons than the commonly used ceramic. Researches have shown that the high amount of negative ions produced in this metal aid in the break down of water droplets which is then absorbed into the hair shaft. This makes your hair look naturally silky and bouncy and also protects your hair

The T3 Tourmaline flat iron is quite popular with everyone and is available in two models classified on the basis of 1 "and 1 3/8". Both these T3 flat irons have heat control mechanism and can withstand the maximum temperature of 410 F or 210 C.

Another type of T3 flat Irons are the Wet to Dry Flat irons which are gaining popularity every day. The main USP of these flat irons is that you do not need to blow dry your hair before you can apply the iron. This is a great way to reduce the damage caused by heat and also saves time. The plates used in this version of the T3 flat iron are made of tourmaline, like the other models.

Then you also have T3 flat Irons that have ceramic and tournalamine like the T3 Bespoke Labs. Then there are mini irons and other ionic irons as well.

The top rated T3 flat irons are:

1. T3 Mini Iron is perhaps one of the most popular straightening irons today. Whether you have frizzy or curly hair, this iron can straighten your hair in a jiffy and give you hair that are free of fizz and silky. The combination of ceramic and tourmaline makes sure that there is no static electricity. It has far infra red heat which helps to set your hair and also prevent cuticle damage! It's a compact gadget so you can take it with you wherever your want.

2. T3 Tourmaline flat iron is known for wider plates than its other products. This flat iron is quite effective in drying your hair and setting it.

3. If you are in a hurry and going out somewhere, you can get yourself a T3 Bespoke Labs Narrow Wet-or-Dry Iron Professional Ceramic Flat Iron. This straightening iron is for people who are always on the move!

So the next time you want a straightening iron, think about the T3 range of products.

Your 10 Step Motorcycle Helmet Fitting Guide

When the average Motorcycle Helmet costs over $150 the last thing any rider wants is to buy the wrong size. If you come off your bike wearing the wrong size helmet then it won’t be able to protect you the way it was designed to. It can also be uncomfortable and cause problems while riding.

Fitting a motorcycle helmet correctly is very simple, it only takes a few minutes!

1. Measure your head. Using a tailors tape measure, measure from above your eyebrows (about 1/2 – 1 inch above) then above your ears to the back of your head.

2. Go online and find a motorcycle helmet that you like the look of, then find a local store where you can try it on.

3. When you visit the store ask to see a sizing chart for the helmet brand of your choice. Using your head size as a guide, pick the helmet size that will fit your head. Usually model sizes start at Extra Small (XS) and go up to XXL (Double Extra Large).

4. It’s not just head size that will affect the fit of your helmet, your head shape will have a big impact on the helmet brand you choose.

5. Put the helmet on, do up the strap to the correct tightness (you should be able to fit 2 fingers in between your chin and the strap) and check the fit. It should be comfortable and shouldn’t press on your temples or forehead to hard. It should press slightly on your cheeks,

6.Stand in front of a mirror and hold each side of the helmet firmly. Turn your head from side to side. If you can move your head freely to each side without the helmet moving, it’s too big. If your head does not move at all then the helmet is way to tight – how did you get it on!

7. Still holding the sides of the helmet, move your head up and down. As above if your head moves around too much the helmet is too big. If the top padding of the helmet can be pulled down so far that it touches the middle of your nose then you need a smaller helmet.

8. Obviously, if the helmet is too big try a size smaller, if it’s to small try a size bigger. If neither of those fit then you might need to try a different brand of helmet to fit your head shape.

9. If you are still having problems try a helmet with removable cheek pads as some riders with odd shaped heads may find this helps.

10. If you get really stuck, ask me for help!

Laying Asphalt Shingles Yourself

Shingle application depends upon whether or not the existing roofing has been removed or left in location and on the kind of roofing material left in place. If the old roofing has been removed or if reroofing is over old roll roofing or BUR, the shingle-application procedures are the exact same as those for new construction. Wooden shingle roofs which are modified with feathering strips also are shingled within the very same manner as new construction.

The scenario that differs from new construction will be the application of new strip shingles over existing strip shingles. The nesting process, described earlier, minimizes any unevenness that may well result from the shingles bridging over the butts of the old shingles. It also ensures that the new horizontal fastening pattern is 2 inches below the old one. The nesting process is based on the assumptions that the new roofing method has a five inch exposure along with the existing roofing was installed with a 5 inch exposure and effectively aligned.

If new eaves flashing has been added, snap chalk lines on it to guide the installation of the new shingles until the courses butt against the existing courses.

For the starter course, take away the tab plus two inches or a lot more from the top of the starter strip shingles so that the remaining portion is equal in width to the exposure of the old shingles, which is normally five inches. Apply the starter strip to ensure that it really is even together with your existing roof eave. If self-sealing shingles are employed for the strip, locate the factory-applied adhesive along the eaves.

Be sure the existing shingles overhand the eaves far sufficient to carry water into the gutter. If they do not, cut the starter strip to a width which will do so. Do not overlap the existing course above. Get rid of three inches from the rake end of the very first starter strip shingle to make sure that joints between adjacent starter strip shingles are covered when the very first course is applied.

For the first course, cut at least two inches from the butts of the very first course of shingles so that the shingles fit between the butts of the existing third course as well as the eave edge of the new starter strip. Commence at the rake with a full-length shingle. Use 4 fasteners per shingle, locating them inside the identical positions as in new construction. Do not fasten into or above the factory-applied adhesive.

Use full-width shingles for the second and all successive courses. Eliminate 6 inches from the rake end of the first shingle in each and every progressive course, through the sixth. Repeat the cycle by starting the seventh course having a full length shingle. Place the best edge of the new shingles against the butt edge of the old shingles within the course above.

Making use of the full width on the second course reduces the exposure of the very first course to three inches, but this region is generally concealed by gutters as well as the look should not be objectionable. For the remaining courses, the five inch exposure is automatic and coincides with that of the existing shingles. As in new construction, apply the shingles across the diagonal as you proceed up the roof.

How to Remove Security Tool in 5 Minutes – Get a Security Tool Removal the Easy Way

A security tool is one of the infamous anti spyware programs doing the rounds and this article will tell you more about security tool removal. Most people do not bother to think twice before visiting malicious websites. They also act carelessly when they open attachments received via email from unknown persons. Some of them download unauthorized versions of licensed software just because some site is offering them for free. These are some of the reasons that might cause security tools to get installed in their computers. This program installs itself in the PC without notifying the user and runs silently in the background.

This tool mimics a scan each time you turn on your computer and provides a feedback stating that your computer is infected with various malware. It also suggests the user to purchase a copy of this tool in order to remove the infection. Do not fall for this trap set by the programmers of this malicious piece of code. There are several security tool removal options by means of which you can get rid of this rogue from your computer. However, it is vital to identify the infection and make sure that the thread posed to your computer is by security tool. Here are a few points that will help you determine the presence of security virus in your PC.

o It scans computer on startup showing various malwares supposedly present in your PC

o It slows down the performance of the computer

o It displays various popups which reveal details about dangerous spyware

o It blocks your browser from visiting certain websites

o It denies installation of anti-spyware programs

o It denies installation of programs designed to remove it

Security tool is far more dangerous than other malwares since:

o It may update or spread by itself

o It may repair its files by itself

o It may install additional spyware to your PC

o It spreads itself through Trojans

o It compromises your security and violates your privacy

It is strongly recommended to use a professional security tool removal tool to get rid of this rogue. Though there are certain sites that provide programs to delete safety tools, they might not be permitted to run by this program. In such cases it is recommended to change the name of the file downloaded to eradicate safety tools to `firefox.exe’. This is to fool safety tools since it permits firefix.exe to run. However, certain tools might work without renaming. Always download these security tool removal tools from well renowned sites such as the link that is provided at the bottom of this article.

Finding a Reliable Heating Engineer

Underfloor heating has a long and interesting past, originating in prehistoric times and continuing still today. Archeological digs in Asia have found evidence of the use of rudimentary forms of this system in early periods of human history. The system is sound, and thus its use continues even in the modern day, albeit with great refinements and advancements in practice.

Modern underfloor heating systems are either “electric systems,” utilizing electrical resistance, or “hydronic systems,” which rely on heated water or fluid passed through pipes under the floor. Electric systems use flexible heating elements to generate heat. These elements include cables, pre-configured cable mats, bronze meshing, and carbon fiber. Hydronic systems use water or water mixed with another fluid, which is heated in a boiler and then circulated underneath the flooring. The boilers are heated electrically or with propane or natural gas. Hydronic systems are rather complex in their design and function, and require skilled tradesmen for installation and maintenance. Electric systems, on the other hand, are relatively simple and easily maintained.

If you are in need of a reliable heating engineer or serviceman to install underfloor heating in your home or business, or to perform repairs on your underfloor heating system, then you will want to take special care in searching for and selecting the engineer. In truth, to refer to a heating engineer as a serviceman is a bit of a misnomer. Heating engineers can, in fact, design and install central heating systems, as well as maintain and repair them. A heating engineer will be educated and trained in his field. The education, in fact, may be at a fairly high level, including scientific and mathematical disciplines. Today, however, many qualified heating engineers do function essentially as servicemen. Perhaps this is an effect of current global economic conditions, but, in any event, these engineers might be regarded in a similar light.

Regardless of the job that the engineer is to perform, whether it is initial design and installation of a new system, or just maintenance and repair of an existing one, the process of selecting the engineer can follow the same steps. You will want to find the very best qualified engineer available, and to avoid the less skilled or qualified. Toward that end, start your process simply by asking around. Ask friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations. What engineers have they used and what has their experience been with them? It may also be worth talking with local real estate agents for their recommendations. Realtors may well know from experience or simply from talking with clients who best to recommend. One other valuable resource is suppliers of products used by heating engineers. Talk to those suppliers and get their recommendations.

Once you have a list of prospective engineers, you may wish to interview them. If the project is to be involved, then you will probably be spending a lot of time and having a lot of contact with the engineer, and a good fit must be found between the two of you. If you cannot communicate with the engineer, or in some other way take some personal objection to them, then the relationship may not be successful, and the job may also not be successful. Ask for a list of clients. The engineer’s past clients will be perhaps the most valuable reference of all in selecting an engineer.

Once you have narrowed your choice to just one or a couple of prospective engineers, you will want to proceed to the bidding stage. What will the job cost, what will it include, and what will it not include? If you get two or three competitive bids, you should be able to make your choice based on a final comparison of the bids.

The Amazing Power of Detaching From Outcomes

Detachment is an amazingly powerful tool that I wish I had understood much earlier in life. The practice of detachment involves many things, but one of the most important is the habit of judging people, actions, and circumstances as being right or wrong, good or bad. As Deepak Chopra says in “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success,” when you are constantly classifying, labeling, and evaluating, you “create a lot of turbulence in your internal dialogue.” The more internal bickering that takes place, the less time and room (in your mind) for constructive thinking. Worry, irrelevant thoughts, and fears add to this internal back and forth dialogue in your mind. It is self-defeating mind chatter that you should first become aware of, then make a conscious effort to detach yourself from. Also, detach yourself from needing the approval of others. When you are attached to peer approval, you are doubting your ability, your likeability, your talent and YOUR POWER. Not external power, the power that is inherent in yourself and that is waiting for you to tap into!

Then there is the pain and discomfort of your present situation. The more you struggle against the unpleasant circumstances of the moment, the more time and energy you waste. It’s okay to want things to get better down the road, but don’t waste time and energy wishing things were different than they are right now. I remember a time years ago that I struck up conversation with a guy I used to always see at a coffee shop I’d be at a lot. We got chatting about the challenges of self-employment when he said something that has stuck in my mind since. “You know Grant,” he interjected as I described fighting through some particular business issue, “only when you completely accept and be at peace with the present situation as it is, can that situation change.” Wow, that impacted me immediately and I told him so – I thanked him for the insight. That perspective on my challenges took a few hundred pounds off my shoulders, and you what? The obstacles suddenly seemed far less daunting and things started working out in ways that pleased me!

Accepting your present situation means detaching yourself from the pain it is causing you. Learn to accept some pain as a normal part of your life situation from time to time. This means, paradoxically, that the best way to eliminate pain is to not try to eliminate it. The more you fight pain, the more you are focused on it, the more it persists. Accept it, feel it, and then move into the present moment. It may sound simplistic, but you can choose to feel better right now.

Above all, learn to detach yourself from specific results. Practice the art of being flexible. Understand that circumstances constantly change and that things rarely work out precisely as planned. The results you end up with may be much different from the results you were after, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be less satisfying. If you are too attached to a specific result, it shuts down your creativity. Don’t be rigid in your approach. Trust that good things are coming your way and they always have a way of showing up!

The quickest and most certain way to achieve a goal is to mentally focus on what you want, and attach very strong feelings to what it will feels like when you have achieved it. Jack Canfield calls it “acting as if.” If you picture a result without attaching strong feelings to it, it’s no more than a thought. And that’s where the subtle connection between desire and letting go comes in. Having strong feelings about wanting something in your life is a good thing. The stronger your feelings, the better. But, at the same time, you have to let go and allow it to come to you – perhaps in a different form than you expected. If a specific objective becomes an obsession – if you believe that you can’t be happy without achieving it – your feelings pass the point of diminishing returns and your focus becomes counterproductive. In fact, you are probably so focused on not having it, that you are attracting more of that!

All this does not mean that you should permanently resign yourself to the circumstances of your currently bad situation. Nor does it mean that you should give up your desire or intention for a specific result. What you should give up is your attachment to that result. Or, as Chopra puts it, you should “accept the present and intend the future.”

When you become adept at detachment – from pain, from evaluating and classifying everything that crosses your path, from precise results – it gives you the time, energy, and mental clarity to focus on the single most important activity for overcoming an impossibly bad situation: exploiting opportunities. What opportunities? The opportunities that are part and parcel of every “impossible” situation. Based on personal experience, I am convinced that the greatest opportunities lie in the eye of the storm – at the very center of your worst problems.

Use your will to detach yourself from your impossible situation and, instead, spend your time cultivating the opportunities it has brought into your life – keeping in mind that such opportunities may be heavily camouflaged. To paraphrase Napoleon Hill from his book “Think and Grow Rich,” In every difficult situation, there exists the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.
