The most popular set is this 5-Piece Diamond Drill Bit Set. These can be used on glass, masonry, marble, or concrete. These are super duty products made of nickel plated high speed still with diamond tips. These work better than the twist design you normally see because it allows greater surface area on the diamonds which means your cutting will be precise and reasonably quick.

Now when using these diamond bits, be sure to use them on low speed with some type of coolant (water or oil). Otherwise, these bits will get so hot that they will ruin what you are trying to drill and the bits themselves will be useless. This 5-piece set is made of #36, #50, #54, #56, and #60.

If you are looking for the more conventional type of diamond drill bits, look at the Northern Industrial Diamond Coated Drill Bits. This is a 10-piece set that are heavy duty and are great jobs that require extra strength. They work especially good for auto repairs because they are so tough. You can drill through steel, cast iron, or aluminum.

This 10 piece set has bits ranging in size from 5/64″ to 3/8″. Northern Industrial also has an 8-piece set you can purchase.

Now sometimes regular diamond drill bits won’t work for what you need. For many jobs, what you really need is diamond hole saw drill bits. In that case, take a look at this 10 piece diamond drill bit set that work great. They cut just like professional tools, and they last for quite a while. These diamond bits are perfect for glass, slate, marble, and tile. Of course, be sure to use them at a very low speed and keep them lubricated with oil or water. You aren’t cutting wood here, you know!

Now you need to be somewhat educated when choosing the right diamond drill bits for the job. First thing you need to figure out is exactly what you want to cut. They come in different sizes, shapes, and hardness based on what they will be used on. If you use the wrong bits on the wrong material, you could damage the bits, the material, and even yourself.

Just look on the packaging to find out what each bit was designed for. The list of acceptable materials will be given. Also look online for great deals and consider buying in bulk! You might be amazed at some of the awesome deals you can find online on diamond drill bits.

Also do a little research online to learn how to these product properly. Clearly, you need to use them slowly and carefully, and be sure to keep them wet to keep them lasting longer. Otherwise, the heads will dull very quickly, and you won’t make progress at all. You won’t have to look far at all to find in-depth videos showing you exactly how to drill properly. You know the adage, measure twice and cut once? Well, the same applies for drilling, so make sure you spend a little time planning ahead before you jump right in.

Plastic Pallets Versus Timber Pallets: Which Are Best?

What are pallets?

Pallets (also know as crates) are used to help transport goods around the country. They do this by providing a solid base on which to place and secure the goods, keeping from the sustaining damage. Also they provide a solid base to both stack and move goods using a forklift truck.

Traditionally pallets have been made of wood, but in recent years with the increase of developments in plastics, they have been made out of this material. But the big question is, which should you choose to use?

Should you use the traditional wood or the new plastic for your pallets and crates?

The advantages of timber pallets

If you choose wood, here’s what advantages it gives you:

Cost: Timber pallets made from common and easily available wood can be very cheaply manufactured, which means that can be cheaper to buy, compared to plastics which require a more sophisticated manufacturing process.

Easier to find: If you want to own the pallets yourself then wooden pallets are very easily sourced from most builders’ merchants or hardware stores. Plastic pallets are much more specialised and not so readily available to buy.

In fact, with timber crates you could even make them yourself.

Easier to fix: Pallets can have quite a hard life, so often get damaged. However, with wooden pallets you can often easily fix them yourself by simply replacing sections of wood or nails.

Strength: Wood can be very good at taking very heavy weights, which might place too much stress on some plastic crates.

Disadvantages of wooden pallets

Lifespan: Even though wood is quite strong, they will become damaged and wear out relatively quickly. Although they are easy to buy and fix, this can become costly if you need a lot of pallets and you use them constantly.

Storage: Wood can be damaged by water, so if you wanted to keep your wooden crates in top condition then you would have to keep them dry, otherwise they will become damaged even quicker.

Environmental issues: Because wood is a natural resource, and wood pallets have a short lifespan, they use a lot more raw material.

As you can see, wood can make a good choice for short term or smaller businesses. They are cheap and easy enough to repair. However, the bigger your business the more problems and higher costs wood will give you due to their short lifespan.

Advantages of plastic pallets

Lifespan: Plastic can provide a much longer lifespan compared to wood, so can be a much better investment in the long term. They don’t require the same amount of repairs or replacement.

Storage: Compared to wood, plastic is much easier to handle and store. Plus it’s not affected by water damage.

Environmental issues: Although plastic compared to wood sounds less environmental, it is when you consider that plastic pallets don’t need to be replaced as often as wooden crates.

Weight: Plastic crates can be significantly lighter than wood and so much easier to handle and work with.

Hygiene: Plastic is much easier to clean to a hygienic level compared to wood. This is especially important if you are transporting goods such as foods.

Disadvantages of plastic pallets

Cost: The initial cost to buy plastic compared to wood is higher. Although, you can use a pallet rental company and so not have to worry about the costs of ownership.

Repairs: Although less likely to get damaged compared to wood, plastic is much harder to repair and in most cases would need to be replaced.

Conclusions

The best type of pallet or crate for you would probably come down to your situation. If you were a small company dealing with limited goods then wooden pallets might prove to be cheaper as you can easily handle the repairs and replacements yourself.

However, for larger companies the longevity and easiness to use of plastic pallets might make better sense when you’re constantly transporting lots of goods. Plus you can find pallet rental (also know as pallet pooling) companies so you don’t actually have to worry about buying and maintaining your own pallet fleet.

Things To Remember While Opting Building Construction Materials!

In the fast moving world, most of the people don’t even bother to inquire about the materials being used in building their homes and structures. They always overlook the fact that the every tall or dwarf structure is standing due to the mingled support of the high quality building construction materials. People have made a common belief that cheaper is always better, but it is not at all true, when it comes to construction material.

There is a herd of building construction suppliers in the market, who will promise you to provide several high quality materials for the construction purposes on lesser rates. They might even offer you heavy discounts for bulk orders, but it is not necessary that they will last for years. For instance, if you choose a low quality iron it will deteriorate quickly and decay the base foundation of the structure. In fact, it will escalate the chances of collapsing the whole building. That is why, it is always suggested to carry out a detailed re-search of various companies and opt for the reliable one. Hereon some of the key factors which should be kept in mind while searching for the building materials suppliers.

Before taking any step, take a thorough visit of the land where you want to establish your dream project and then construct a blue print of it. You should be fully aware with the kind of architecture you want to develop, so that you can decide upon the quantity and quality of material needed for the structure.

Then, negotiate with the builders and bring each and every small point in lime light, before signing any contract. For instance, the time of payment, installments, in how much time they will accomplish the whole structure, time of working hours and the most importantly the type of materials being used in building. Through this you would be able to analyze the cost cutting of the budget. It does take a lot of time and efforts as there are many concerns that demands reconsideration while rejuvenating or remodeling the whole building.

Moreover, if you are a newbie and do not have acquaintance, who can guide you for buying material, you can take help from online suppliers. There is a gamut of websites that will help you in deciding engineered wood products, laminated veneered lumber, hardware insulation installation, lumber and metal products used, roofing, sidings, stakes, shims and much more. Compare all the available rates and detailed information of the products on different websites. Even if you mushroom your search you will find, some websites even allow customers to place bid on the bulk building construction materials. If you place any online order, you can track it with your order number. Basically, online suppliers create such hefty discounts to gain the trust of new customers. It does not matter that you are a builder or a contractors; if you are buying material in bulk they will provide huge discounts.

Although, it is very difficult for any individual to search a reliable supplier, always take advice from the known experts, as the quality should not be suffered from any point. Do some self-online research, compare the prices of top 10 companies and then decide up on any conclusion. That’s how an entire process of buying a construction material should be done.

Using Different Types of Dice in Board Games

Dice are one of the most classic elements of board games, dating all the way back to Ancient Egypt and the board game found there, Senet. Dice are a great way of representing a random element in a game, giving everyone the opportunity to either profit from good luck or suffer from bad luck. Just as random chance plays a large role in true life, the world that board games represent often tries to respect that quality. Therefore, dice can come into play with board games for any number of reasons.

Most often, they will represent the movement of a player's token along the board. This can either take them to the end faster or help them to land on either beneficial or harmful spaces. Dice can also be used to represent other elements of chance, such as the outcomes of battles or the likely success of a gambling taken. One thing known, however, is that dice have a number of different forms and purposes depending on the game it might be used for.

The traditional form of dice has six sides and on each side is a representation of a number from 1 to 6. When rolled, one of these six numbers will land face-up and this is what determines the purpose of the roll, traditionally for movement purposes. However, many games will make use of dice which do not follow this specific pattern.

Some games have the need for dice which will fulfill specific purposes. These can be six sided dice that do not have the traditional number values on each side. Dice of this nature can be labeled with colors which might represent something in the game or special instructions, such as "Roll Again" or "Lose a Turn." Other possibilities are that the dice might not have simply six sides.

There are many dice available which have more than six sides, with eight-sided and ten-sided dice being some of the most popular. Dice with 20 different sides have been known as well, although rare, a 100-sided dice has been known to be used. These dice are more typical in role playing games, where a large number of factors can come into play based on the direction that the game might be heading.

As stated, however, the dice themselves might have any purpose of movement. Role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons, will use dice for multiple purposes. Sometimes dice are the best way to determine the outcome of a battle. Other times, they can be used to help understand what the outcome of a spell might be or to decide how many accessories could be equipped. Risk uses dice to determine specifically the number of dice which can be used for the outcome of a battle. Depending on how many armies are attacking or defending a certain territory, the number of dice rolled will be affected. Defending dice have an advantage over attacking dice, giving players a fair opportunity for defense. As shown, though, dice have any number of either sides or functions and can be used to enhance nearly any board game.

Modern Dating

Once upon a time long … long ago a young man would meet with the father of his prospective date on the front porch of her home. He'd ask the father's permission for the pleasure of her company each evening before taking her out. When, where and an appropriate return time, was discussed at length and agreed upon. No, let me rephrase that statement. The father would instruct the boy about his expectations and requirements. There was no discussion. The dates then where usually innocent enough. They were surrounded by a sodas, burgers, fries and or maybe just a shake at the local juke shop. These outings might be followed by a movie with the return home of the youthful flower to her respective abode. The couple might have been spent talking of school and the coming summer vacation on the front porch while under watchful eyes, threw strategically cracked drapes. As then, and perhaps even now, the date ended with the rhythmic flicking of the porch light that signaled a parental conclusion. A quick, innocent peck placed on the cheek of the responsible lad was followed by a hasty retreat of the young lady.

OK I probably went way too far back for some of you. But no doubt, you have seen this in a black and white movie or heard tale of it from an elder family member. Either way, modern dating has undergone tremendous change since your parents 'day – for that matter, your grandparents' courting years. The 60's ushered in the sexual revolution, the pill, and-FREE LOVE. Since the aprons came off and women were not tied to having children the traditional date has not been the same. Saving one's virtue for their honeymoon faded away, now relegated to movies and fairy tails. Let's face it. The best thing parents can do is educate their children and pray for the best. We've been made painfully aware that modern teens seldom graduate from their high school with an intact virtue. Today young people, joined by a growing number of adults, turn to the internet in hope of finding romance and meeting Mr. or Ms Right. Services range from free and often suspicious to hundreds, even thousands of dollars in service fees. Prior to the advent of the internet, people met, talked and discovered what brought them together or set them apart as individuals. Now services have you post pictures, create personal bio's and specify preferences such as eye color, weight, height, economic status, even which race you wish to engage socially. Introductions are initiated via e-mail, a "flirt", or a series of one liner comment methods.

With all of the technology at one's disposal you'd think dating would be that much less complicated. The answer: "WRONG!" Not only do dangers exist in the form of internet predators but scammers, both male and female, look for easy marks in the lonely hearts club. Their interest is to separate the unsuspecting from their purse or bank account. They create profiles that contain quality pictures, but little about themselves. They will claim to be local but soon write of some personal tragedy involving Nigeria or other in Africa or Russia. They are professional cons whose sole objective is to take your hard earned paycheck, life savings and threaten you …

The following is a composition of do and don'ts list comprised out of recent trends in the internet dating world. We are very far from the days of sipping soda and parental guidance .. The list below is meant as a source guide to the dating community. After suffering my own failures, due to little knowledge of the internet dating jungle, I urge you to read it and arm yourself. Your search will be more successful and you'll be armed with information that can help you avoid financial and sexual predators.

1.) You should never release personal banking information, SSN # or any type of financial information to an individual over the phone, internet or through another person who may coerce you to do so. For any pay services on the internet you will be asked for credit card or debit card information at a purchase. However, do insure that the site is secure and is well established and reputable. Check the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Affairs and internet reviews of the site you're choosing. Never give out your bank routing number or your bank account number for pay sites. If you want to verify a site and protect yourself against fraudulent charges set up an account through Pay Pal. At the end of this article there is a list of free sites as well as pay sites to which you can subscribe for internet meet-ups.

2.) Never schedule to meet anyone, regardless of their phone demeanor, for the first few times in a place that is not public where there are other people around. A person can sound nice over the phone and be charming but you have no defense against a predator when you are alone and there's no back-up. Insist upon this and do not compromise, especially women. Men, being male does not mean that you are safe.

3.) If a person focuses on sex either in jest or more seriously simply hang up! Also use phone numbers that have a block service. Usually cells are best as home numbers are easily traced to home addresses.

4.) Be honest in your profile and straight forward about who you are as a person and what you're looking for. If you make as far as meeting a person you'll be found out. Besides, you're wasting your time as well as the other persons if you're deceptive. It leads to heart break. Be original in your profile and thorough about yourself.

5.) Also be original in your profile and thorough about yourself and what you're looking for in addition to explaining what you're looking for.

6.) Stay away from negative subjects on the net and in person. You're attempting to attract Mr. or Ms Right. You do not want to scare them off before you have a chance to find out about them.

7.) If a service offers background checks you may opt for this but do it early before you invest yourself and your time. Heartbreak can be overcome in time, but the monetary expense of serious dating drains your coffer and limits your prospects to move on.

8.) This may sound out of the norm but pay attention to how the person speaks and uses grammar. What idioms do they use? This is a quick way to find out if you are compatible intellectually and a gage for honesty.

9.) As hard as it can be, allow plenty of opportunity for them to talk as much as possible. Do not dominate the conversation. The best way to get to know a person is listen not talk. You'll be able to determine a lot more about them, their if you are silent and attentive.

10.) Lastly, read steps 1-9 and do your research on internet dating as well as into the person you choose to spend your time with.

Selecting a Commercial Roofing Contractor

When you’re looking for a roofer for your commercial roofing project you need to find a contractor who understands the special needs of a commercial roofing project. For example it can be harder to work on a business during business hours so either the business has to be shut down for the repair or replacement or the job has to be done after conventional business hours. Is the roofer you are considering for the job willing and able to work around your schedule constrictions which might involve working weekends or evenings?

When you begin your search for a roofing contractor not only do you need to answer those questions but you also want to find someone that will do a high quality job without a lot of time delays. Going about finding someone can seem like an obstacle in itself but there are some ways to make the search easier.

Ask friends and family for referrals and try to find at least three contractors to give you written bids on your job. Before you go any further you need to make sure that the contractors you are considering are fully licensed and bonded. A simple search with the state contractor’s board will verify if your roofer is licensed and if there are any past judgments or claims against their license.

Once you select three or four roofers to place bids, you should prepare yourself for the bids to be widely varied. Roofers will have brand preferences that will vary and may factor in more or less than the next guy for a labor estimate. The more detailed a written bid is the more helpful it will be for you to see where the cost are going to be incurred. Don’t, however, select a roofer based solely on the bid price. Any low ball bids may be tempting to take, but if they are low because of poor quality workman ship it may not be worth it in the end.

As the saying goes, you generally get what you pay for, so if you can afford a mid-priced bid it’s always a good idea to go up in your price range rather than down. You also should select your roofer based on how professional they were and how comfortable you anticipate you will be working with them.

Finally your cost will vary based on what type of roofing material you choose as well as the cost to haul your old roof to the landfill. If you are looking for places to cut corners on your roof, instead of cutting labor cost you might want to ask about a metal roof option. Metal roofs can be cost effective and energy efficient making them overall money savers for the long run, and on commercial buildings they can be very low maintenance. Plus since they can be placed on top of an existing roof, you don’t need to have the old one removed and hauled away, which can make a big impact on your cost.

Guitar Sheet Music

As you take guitar lessons either on your own or with a help of a professional guitar player, you are most likely to encounter guitar sheet music. Guitar sheet music is a printed musical notation for guitar. If you are serious in learning how to play a guitar like a pro, you have to learn what guitar sheet music is, what it does and how it is used as early as now.

There are basically two types of musical notations for guitar: standard notation and tablature. These notations tell you which notes to play on your guitar.

Standard Notation

In this kind of notation, the notes are written in a five-line musical staff. You must be able to identify the notes in the staff and locate the equivalent note on your guitar. Each kind of note has its own duration – for instance, a quarter note lasts one beat; a half note, two beats; and a whole note, four beats.

Mnemonics are usually used to identify and remember the notes in the staff easily. Notes that are found in the spaces between the lines form the word FACE while the notes found in the lines form EGBDF, which can be easily recalled by the mnemonic "Every Good Boy Does Fine."

The note located at the ledger line below the staff is called the middle C. On the guitar, the middle C lies on the fifth string.

Tablature

This kind of guitar notation tells you exactly where to position your fingers on the guitar. It consists of six horizontal lines that represent the six strings of the instrument. If you look at the staff closely, you will see numbers on the lines. Each of these corresponds to a fret in the guitar.

Since a guitar tablature or a tab shows a clear-cut illustration of the fretboard, it is much easier to use. Also, a guitar tab avoids confusion since notes in a standard notation can be played in different strings and frets.

However, a tab may only be used for guitars while a standard notation is applicable to many kinds of instruments. Moreover, you can not identify the rhythm of the song if you are using only a tablature. For better appreciation of the music, it would be better to get a guitar sheet music with both standard and tablature notations.

How Social Media Has Changed Our Lives

We live in a world where social media has become the norm. More and more people get their news and entertainment from regular people than any other time in history. Since the dawn of television, networks have largely decided what people watch and how that material is presented. This left us at the mercy of what a few people thought was important or entertaining. Social media has changed all that:

Viral videos. It's clear that the world has embraced video as a killer app on the Internet. Thousands of videos on YouTube have millions and millions of views. Many of these videos are not professionally made, they are just events that people captured with their personal cameras either at home or out and about. By being able to share videos with a few clicks, they spread like a virus and become very popular very quickly.

One video on YouTube shows a man dancing to different styles from the different eras. It's called the Evolution of Dance and has over 140 million views at the time of this writing. Plus it's made something of a celebrity out of the man in the video and you can even book him to perform at function. If there were know way to share this video online he would just be able to show it off to his friends and family, and it would have remained largely a secret. He could have submitted it to America's Funniest Home Videos but they would not show the full 6 minutes of the video, they would only show a few funny parts.

Or consider the video called Battle at Kruger which shows a baby buffalo get chased by a bunch of lions right into the mouth of an alligator before being rescued by its herd that subsequently chases the lions off. This is a very powerful video showing a scene from nature that would normally not be shared with the world. Clocking in at just over 50 million views it's something that many people would not have gotten a chance to see if it were not for social media.

News footage. More and more big news companies are using footage from everyday people in their news coverage. When the Virginia Tech school shooting occurred most of the footage that was being used was people sending in video and picture from their cell phones from inside the campus and buildings. This sort of thing was not available just a decade ago, when there was no such thing as a camera phone, and digital cameras and camcorders were either nonexistent or big and bulky.

We can expect that any major news event from now on will contain elements of social media. We can also expect that more and more of our entertainment will come from each other rather than giant media outlets.

Cork floors are resistant to fungus and bacteria and are even good for people suffering from asthma.

Linoleum: Linoleum is a durable as well as bio-degradable item which makes a good pick for green floors. It is produced out of recycled natural contents such as linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins and ground limestone. Linoleum floors are easy to clean and offer good foot support.

Holiday Ladder Safety

The holiday festivities are here. The annual hanging of lights and decorations from eves, gutters, walls, banisters and any other surface we can reach on our home begins.

For some, this is the only time of year the dusty ladder is pulled out of hiding. Little thought is given to how this tool is purchased or used safely.

Ladders are labeled with duty ratings. Type I, the industrial ladder, holds 250 pounds. Type II holds up to 225 pounds. Type III, the household ladder, holds up to 200 pounds.

Remember to include the weight of the tools or materials you plan to use. If you work around electrical wires, do not choose a metal ladder. A number of accidents occur each year because power lines and equipment wires contact metal ladders. Use a dry wooden or nonconductive fiberglass ladder for this kind of work.

Using a Ladder

  • Make sure the ladder is suited for the type of job you plan to do (see the types above).
  • Before using a ladder, especially a ladder that has been stored in the garage for a while, inspect it for cracks or broken joints.
  • Place your ladder on a stable, even, flat surface. Never place a ladder on top of another object.
  • Use the 1: 4 ratio to ensure a stable working platform. Place the base of the ladder 1 foot away of whatever it leans against for every 4 feet of height to the point where the ladder contacts at the top (see graphic).
  • When using an A-frame stepladder, make sure the brace is locked in place.
  • If climbing onto another surface (like a roof,) make sure the ladder extends at least three feet past the platform you're climbing onto.
  • Secure tall ladders by lashing or fastening the ladder to prevent movement.
  • Always face the ladder when climbing or descending.
  • Keep both feet on the ladder – never put one foot on a rung and the other foot on a different surface.
  • Do not climb higher than the second rung on stepladders or the third rung on straight or extension ladders.
  • Never stand on the top or the paint shelf of a stepladder.
  • Keep your belt buckle (if you have one) positioned between the rungs so it does not catch.
  • Never leave ladders unattended – kids love them.
  • Never over reach, climb down and move the ladder.
  • Do not place a ladder on an icy surface.
  • When working with electricity, use a ladder made of wood or fiberglass.

Maintaining Ladders

Inspect ladders regularly. Stepladders and extension ladders should be inspected for broken or frozen joints or latches. Aluminum ladders should be inspected for cracks and broken welds. Aluminum ladders should also be inspected for rough spots and burrs before first use.

Wood ladders should be inspected for cracked wood, splinters, and rot. Look for broken or loose hardware. Protect wood ladders with linseed oil or clear sealant. Never paint a wooden ladder – the paint may hide imperfections such as rot or cracks.

Fiberglass ladders are protected with a clear sealant. If the fiberglass is damaged through the sealant, sand lightly before applying another coat of lacquer.

Dealing With Death

Losing a loved one is one of the most traumatic events that someone can experience. It is inevitable, as we will all die at one point or another, that you will at some time in your life lose someone that you care about. You never know when that time will come that will unavoidable change your life. For me, I was 16 years old.

It was a week before my junior year spring break was scheduled to begin. It was late. I was at home, asleep. I kept having dreams of bells ringing. Not like a doorbell, or a phone ring, or anything like that. It was the ringing of church bells, over and over. Suddenly, I awoke to a light in the stairway that I could see from my bedroom door. My mom appeared in my doorway seconds later, sobbing. She was trying to talk to me, but I could not make out what she was saying. Maybe it was because I had been woken up suddenly, or because my mother's sobs would not allow for the words to come out. I was immediately wide awake, confused, heart racing, and already hurting before even knowing what was to come.

She could not say it. She could not tell me, or say for the first time that her son had died. My brother, my only sibling, had died. She told me that my dad was on the phone and that I needed to talk to him. As I listened to my father start, "There was an accident …" I instantly asked in a frantic, "Is he ok? Is he ok? Where is he? Is he ok?" I knew that it was bad. I knew that it was my brother, and I knew that it was bad. Then, the life altering words left my father's mouth. "Paul died."

For me, living in a world without my older brother had been unknown for me. How would I survive without him? What would I do without my protector? He was my family, what would I do without my family? I was so empty and disoriented; I did not know what to do next. I had to begin to rebuild my life without my older brother. For the longest time, my memories belonged in one of two categories: before he died, and after. People always say that time heals all wounds. It does not. You learn to live with the loss, and eventually you become good at it. As days pass, and the rebuilding begins, life will get easier.

Engineering Surveys

Engineering surveys are those that are associated with all aspects of engineering design, such as topographic, as-built and layout. Engineering surveys are usually much more advanced than those created by civil engineers and serve additional purposes.

They must be conducted by licensed surveyors. There are several exams and qualifications that a surveyor must attain before being able to practice engineering surveying in the USA.

What are they used for?

The main purpose of is to assess and determine the conditions of a building site either pre or post construction. They can also help assist builders, architects and civil engineers in preparing base plans.

Engineering and building surveys are an essential part of all large building constructions including roads, railways, dams, bridges and residential areas. Civil engineers in particular rely heavily on them.

Types

Engineering surveys are a very broad category and include a range of different types to suit different purposes.

Typically they can be divided into three survey categories: planning, design and construction.

Planning surveys are completed prior to construction work at a particular site. Within planning surveys there are also investigation and channel alignment surveys. Investigation surveys can include such elements as: vertical control, gully, valley and channel cross-section surveys, and reservoir area surveys. In many cases all these different types of engineering surveys will be required to get a full picture of the site situation.

Design surveys are a group of surveys that are done during the design phase of construction – after the planning have been completed. Types nclude: structure site and channel surveys.

Finally, construction surveys are a very important category of engineering surveys. These can be done both during and after construction has been completed. Their purpose is both to keep a check over the construction process as well as to maintain the buildings once they are complete. Embankment, principal spillway, existing channel and emergency spillways surveys are just some examples of construction surveys that may be required.

Methods

A variety of methods are used for conducting these surveys – and the methods will change depending on the particular job at hand.

One of the most modern and cost-effective methods of conducting engineering surveys is using a method called lidar surveying.

Lidar surveying uses three-dimensional scanners to provide high definition measurements for use. They provide the highest possible level of detail for both interior and exterior buildings. This method, however, is only suitable for use with already-built buildings, not prior to construction.

Engineering surveys can cover a wide range of features relating to a building or construction site, even including the underground waterways. The types of features they are required to add to their survey will influence what apparatus and tools they use.

Are On a range there of apparatus of used by vBulletin® professional surveyors , Including of theodolites, total stations, GPS and dopplers.

Some of the methods engineering surveyors may use include: differential leveling, which uses a tripod and mounted telescope to measure angles and lengths; and trigonometric leveling, using the mathematics of trigonometry.

There are also usually several people involved in the surveying process. Engineering and building surveys are very complex and can not be completed alone. Some of the workers that may be involved include: field engineers, hydrologists and planning engineers.

DIY Installing Laminate Or Hardwood on Stairs

The first thing your going to need is patience. Installing laminate or hardwood on stairs can be tedious and time consuming. This is a little different than installing solid stair treads. In a lot of cases folks want their stairs to match the surrounding laminate or hardwood flooring. If you decide to take on the task, the main objectives is are to cut the treads and stair noses as close as possible to the sides and make sure the stair nose, treads and risers are attached securely. (I use glue, construction adhesive and nails).

A lot of times the stairs have carpet on them, so removing the carpet can reveal some surprises. Such as the over hang on each stair (which may need to be removed) or the zillion staples the carpet guys used when install the carpet. Or maybe the treads under the carpet are warped or loose.

When preparing the stairs I remove all the staples, scrap any debris of such as drywall mud paint over spray etc. I also check for any treads that may not be flat. Sometimes this can be corrected with screws which are better than nails, nails tend to work loose. Or using a belt sander to get rid of high spots. Worse case would be to replace the tread with the same thickness board. And removing the over hang on each stair or fill in the space below the over hang.

Deciding on what type of riser is something that needs to be considered. You can either use the same flooring your installing on the treads or use a painted wood as a riser. 1 X pine or polar are good for this. Some folks like the stairs all the same, whereas others prefer the stairs to stand out more with the painted riser.

Consider the cost of the materials. Stair nosing can be costly, but you can usually get two stairs done with one length of nosing. Shop around for the best price of pine or poplar for the risers if you want that look. As far as the amount of flooring you will need, a typical stair is about 3 feet wide by about 1 foot deep. This is 3 square feet for the tread or 6 square feet if your doing the riser with the flooring also. Always add 10 percent extra when ordering your flooring. This extra flooring is needed for waste and when mistakes are made. Its good to have extra left over also in case of repairs that may need to be done in the future.

Using good quality tools can make the job easier. I use a sliding miter saw, nail gun, circular saw and table saw as well as various hand tools.

I will not use quarter round on the stairs to cover gaps. It does not look good and it makes your stairs smaller. If you have to cover gaps get some matching putty to fill them in. You will need some anyway to fill nail holes.

Anyway you look at it, its a lot of work. The more educated you are when you start, the better the finished job will look. It can be very rewarding when done the right way.

Modern Cold Stamping Foils

The development of modern cold stamping foils originated with the simple cold foils devised as a dieless technique for applying a metallic finish to self adhesive labels produced on reel to reel printing presses. There are many benefits of this process, and some disadvantages, although cold foiling has progressed a lot since then.

The benefits in reel to reel printing are obvious. If hot foiling is carried out in-line at the end of the printing process, then the press speed is limited by the foiling speed which is relatively slow. If the printing was maintained and the foil applied as a separate pass, there is a corresponding cost impact. Furthermore, the cost of hot foil dies is relatively high compared to a printing plate or sleeve and energy is needed to heat the die.

Reel to reel cold foiling involves printing a UV curable adhesive in the foil design needed, laminating the foil to the adhesive through a nip, curing the adhesive with UV lamps and separating the foil from the printed web. The foil that is removed from its carrier film is in the design of the printed adhesive, since that has been UV cured and so adheres to the foil.

By using a cold foil, the speed is limited only by the strength of the UV lamps or the optical density of the foil. The aluminium layer in the foil has to be thinner than that normally used in a hot stamping foil to allow sufficient transparency to the UV light. True, this is irrelevant when the foiling is carried out directly to transparent films since the light can be directed through the back of the film onto the adhesive, but this is frequently not the case. The foiling is often carried out over an opaque white ink which can be silk screened onto to the label prior to the adhesive and then the foil applied. This places an opaque layer between the film and the foil, so that the beam has to pass through the lacquer layer or top coat of the cold foil.

The UV beam passes through the lacquer and aluminium layers to reach the adhesive, so the aluminium must be as transparent as possible. The more opaque it is, the more lamps are needed or the slower the running speed. Since printers want the lamps set in a fixed position, and not changed around for each type of job, all curing is generally carried out through the foil than through the film being printed.

Given that this can be done, then cold foiling is much faster than hot foiling, and of course there is no need for a die, thus saving not only on die-cutting costs but also on energy. A very appropriate saving these days. So why are all reel to reel jobs not blocked using cold stamping foils? Mainly due to the quality. Cold foiling is generally not as brilliant as hot foiling, and also most stamping foil manufacturers offer a very limited range.

They have also tended not be very print receptive. If the overprint is small enough, it can adhere, though the cold foil surface tends to be fairly low in surface energy (low dyne level). Larger printed areas tend to have poor scratch resistance and tape adhesion, though many customers accept this in return for the lower costs. Modern developments, however, are tending to overcome these problems though truly overprintable cold foils are very difficult to find and depend very much on the type of ink being used.

Modern cold foil developments include sheet fed offset litho applications, whereby the adhesive is applied by traditional oxidation drying offset, and then the silver foil overprinted with oxidation drying offset transparent inks to produce an attractive coloured metallic effect. This process is currently patented. Further developments involve offset UV adhesives and inks, though the adhesion of the UV ink to the foil surface is still an issue here.

The volumes of cold foil being used world wide are increasing at a rapid rate, and much of this is in the offset field, where the major European printing machine suppliers are offering purpose build equipment, and add-ons that can be retrofitted to a printer's existing equipment. The printing quality is improving as more development work is carried by the hot stamping foil producers, and the quality modern cold stamping foils is rapidly approaching that of hot foiling.
