The Evolution of Transportation

People and things have always had the need to move or be moved from one place to another. People have always looked for more comfortable or quicker ways to travel. Transportation is a way people and things move from one place to another. Different environments require different methods of transportation.

People have invented machines, called vehicles or crafts, to travel. Some vehicles travel on the ground, like a train. Some vehicles travel on top of the water, like a jet ski. Some even help people to travel under the water, like a submarine. People use other types of crafts to travel in the air. A hot air balloon is an interesting way to travel through the sky.

Crafts such as rockets can help people to travel into space. Over the centuries, inventors designed machines or improved ways of traveling to move people faster and faster.

Ships and Boats

One of the earliest ways to transport people and things was by traveling in the water. Boats are small crafts generally used for a special purpose like fishing. Ships are larger crafts that might use sails or an engine to propel them through the water. They may travel on rivers, lakes, or oceans.

Boats With Paddles

People use flat wooden boards called paddles to row small boats. An oar is another name for a paddle. A raft is a simple boat with a flat bottom. We can make a raft using tree trunks or logs. Sometimes, flat pieces of wood called planks are bound together to make a raft. Some rafts are made of rubber or a plastic called vinyl. These rafts are often inflatable.

Early Native Americans made canoes out of tree trunks. They hollowed out the trunk and used a paddle to move from place to place. Today, an artificial substance, made by man, called fiberglass is a popular material for building a canoe.

A kayak is a sleeker version of a canoe with one or two small holes. The holes are where people sit. A rider may attach a watertight skin or enclosure to prevent water from getting in the boat. The boat can turn all the way over without sinking. Some people compete in kayak races. The Olympics have had a kayak event since 1936.

Boats With Sails or Motors

Other boats and ships use different types of power. A sailboat uses pieces of canvas or other fabrics called sails, which are filled by the wind fills and pushes the boat forward.

Ancient Egyptians used sailboats to move the stones for the Great Pyramids from Aswan to Giza. Pilgrims traveled from England on a large sailboat called the Mayflower to reach America in 1620.

A motorboat uses an electric motor and propellers. Propellers are turning metal blades that help the vessel to move through the water. A speedboat is a small, but very fast motorboat. Speedboats pull water skiers, help the Coast Guard or marine patrol on rescue missions, or might even compete in a race.

Larger Boats and Ships

Most large ships are made of metals like iron or steel. They use giant propellers powered by engines to move through the water. A steamboat is a large boat with paddles. A steam-powered engine turns the paddles to move the boat.

The biggest ships are tankers and aircraft carriers. Oil tankers can carry millions of barrels of oil inside huge cargo areas. Designers built tankers to travel long distances and other than oil, they may transport water, chemicals, or liquefied natural gas.

Aircraft carriers are long, flat warships designed to act as a floating airbase. Planes take off and land on the runways on the top of the ship.

A submarine is a metal ship that can travel underwater. A submarine can be small enough to carry one or two people and remain underwater for a few hours. They can also be very large, have a crew of over eighty people and remain underwater for a few months.


A train is a vehicle that runs on tracks, or rails. Passenger trains may have many compartments for people to travel from one place to another. Freight trains carry cargo, or things. Different cars transport different types of items.

Refrigerator cars transport food. Container cars need a crane to lift cargo in or out of the car. Tanker cars transport different types of liquids.

Light Rail

People sometimes use the term light rail to talk about trains that run on city streets. A trolley, also called a streetcar, is one type of light rail transportation. The first streetcars were pulled by horses or even people. Modern streetcars usually get their power from electricity. Electricity makes things run.

A subway is a light rail system of cars. A subway runs on the street and in underground tunnels. Many large cities have a network of subway tunnels.

Big Trains

Big trains have wheels that run on railroad tracks. They travel long distances between cities and towns. The first car on a train is the locomotive. The locomotive powers the train. The first trains used steams engines. Today, most trains get power from using gasoline or electricity. High-speed rail trains are electric trains that run faster than a regular train, sometimes called a bullet train. These high speed rail systems also transport people in Germany, Korea, and Spain. The first countries to build and use the bullet train are the countries of France and Japan.

The monorail is another type of train. Most monorail systems run on a single rail. Some monorails are suspended. The train cars actually hang from the track.

Motor Vehicles

People drive and are passengers in motor vehicles in most places of the world. Motor vehicles have wheels and a motor. They can be driven on many different land surfaces. Cars, buses, and trucks allow people and things to travel to certain places. They can travel where boats and trains cannot go.


Cars are vehicles used by people to get from one place to another. Combustion engines are often the power source for cars. This type of engine burns gasoline or diesel fuel to run. Some people are concerned that combustion engines are contributing to pollution in the air.

Inventors are developing other types of power systems to make cars run. Electric cars have electric motors that run on batteries. Some cars use hydrogen to provide power. A hybrid car uses a combustion engine and battery power to make the car work.

Cars vary in their size. A limousine is a long car, which has space for many passengers and has a chauffeur to drive the vehicle. A micro-car, also called a bubble car, is very popular in countries outside of the United States. Auto makers designed the microcar to use less gas. It is also economical because a small amount of material is necessary to build the car.

Some people like to drive a sports car. The fastest cars are race cars. Some cars have special features, like convertible, which have a fabric or hard top that folds back.


Buses are bigger than cars. A bus has a long body with several rows of seats or benches for passengers. Buses usually operate on a schedule. A passenger bus can carry people long distances. They travel between different cities and towns. A tour bus carries tourists or people on vacation. Some people charter, or rent, a bus for special purposes.


Vehicle engineers designed trucks to carry materials of all kinds. Pickup trucks are a bit bigger than cars. They have a flat bed behind the passenger compartment. They can carry many things in the flat bed. Large trucks transport different kinds of heavier materials or equipment. They carry things to places where trains and boats cannot travel. An 18-wheeler is a very big truck. It has 18 separate wheels.


Hot Air Balloons, Blimps and Dirigibles

Aircraft are vehicles or machines that let people travel through the air. The first type of air transportation was the hot air balloon. It is the oldest successful human carrying technology for flight. It floats using a large bag of silk or nylon filled with heated air. People travel in a wicker basket called a gondola, that hangs underneath.

A blimp or dirigible is like a balloon. The gas helium fills up the balloon to help it float. It has a motor to push it forward. This type of craft was very popular before 1940.

As technology for airplanes improved, people stopped using blimps to travel. Today, advertisers use blimps to market their products. Some companies offer sightseeing tours in a blimp.

Airplanes, Gliders, Helicopters

An airplane is an aircraft that flies using wings and an engine. The Wright brothers receive credit for the invention of the first airplane in 1903. Airplanes can be small and carry only one or two people. Commercial airplanes can be large and carry many passengers a long distance in a short amount of time. A motor makes the propellers turn. Most larger airplanes have jet engines. This type of engine has many turning blades inside. They move air much faster than ordinary propellers.

Jet airplanes use turbines to make them move faster. The military uses supersonic aircraft, such as fighters or bombers, to move quickly with a great amount of power. A fighter jet is a small military airplane that can go very fast. The Concorde is one of the only supersonic planes used as a commercial airplane. It carried passengers from Europe to America in less than half the time it took for a regular airplane to fly the same distance. The Concorde was very expensive to fly. Due to rising costs, the Concorde was retired from use. The last Concorde flight was on October 24, 2003.

A helicopter is an aircraft with a large propeller on top. It can rise into the air, or take off, straight up. A helicopter can take off without using a runway.

A glider has a similar shape to an airplane. It uses only the wind for power. The military may use gliders to deliver troops. Gliders are very quiet because they don’t have an engine. Some people participate in glider competitions.


A rocket is a vehicle that travels into the air at a very high speed. It burns fuel to make thrust. Thrust pushes, or propels, the rocket upward. A rocket engine ejects the thrust out of the bottom of the rocket. A lot of energy is required to propel a rocket into space. Energy is necessary to make things happen. Astronauts and cosmonauts are people who travel into space using rockets. Rockets also transport the satellites into their destination orbit. Satellites study the Earth and other objects in the universe.

Rocket Design and Travel

Multiple sections or stages make up the design of most rockets. Each stage contains its own fuel supply and rocket engine.

When its fuel is used up, a rocket is released. This lightens the weight of the rocket. It allows it to travel faster. A rocket needs to travel at least 17,700 miles per hour, (28,500 kilometers) to make it out of the atmosphere into space, which is the so-called “escape velocity”. The part of the rocket that actually reaches space is often called a spacecraft.

Booster rockets

Some rockets get extra thrust from booster rockets. The scientists usually attach the boosters to the side of the main rocket. The space shuttle is both a rocket and an airplane. It releases two booster rockets. As the rocket uses up its fuel, it will also release an external fuel tank. The space shuttle lands like an airplane when it returns to Earth.

Dry Stone Walling – Building A Wall Yourself

Dry stone walling was originally a popular method for creating boundaries due to the fact that dry stone walls are low cost and consist only of stones, which are easy to source in certain areas of the UK. Many people still use these stone walling techniques for these reasons, but also because of their natural beauty and ability to blend into the countryside. The popularity of dry stone walls is wide spread in the UK, but they are used mainly in Scotland, Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire. The walls themselves are made by using stones and rocks placed specifically so that they interlock, eventually forming a sturdy structure. They are often used for field boundaries, but also as a garden boundary, which is why it is useful for people to know how to build them for themselves.

The First Step
The first thing you need to do is to estimate how much stone you require for your wall. Once you have done that then you will need to find a source of stones. The best thing about stone walling is that it requires stones of various shapes and sizes, so that you can find them just about anywhere. You could go scouring through the countryside (although this could prove very time consuming) or find a recently demolished out-building and request use of the stones that are likely to be going to go to the tip! Alternatively you can buy stones from certain suppliers, limestone is a very popular choice for dry stone boundaries.

How to Build a Dry Stone Wall
Now to the building of the wall itself – this begins by digging a shallow trench in an outline as you want your wall to sit. Once you have done that you need to make the base of the wall from very flat and wide stones. It is important that these stones are all level with one and other. The next layer should have the stones place over the joints of the stones on the base. This is the technique you continue to use as you build each layer. The stones should get gradually smaller as you build a higher wall and remember not to use small stones near the base of the wall as this will cause it to be unstable. There are various dry stone walling courses around the country or if you are not sure that you are up to the job then call in an expert!

Belize – Land of Contrast

Belize: Land of the Mayan Indians

It does not take long to discover that Belize is a land of contrasts. From the poverty and disarray of the cities to the quiet countryside, many differences are soon found. With poverty and crime running rampant in cities such as Belize City and Belmopan, the traveler has to be constantly aware of his surroundings and protect whatever is being carried. Remember, that camera hanging around your neck is worth more than the average Belizian earns in a year. All that aside, the Mayan people are wonderfully warm people many of whom go out of their way to please visitors.

Traveling into the country side one discovers thatch roof homes with no doors or windows.With the warm climate, they can live comfortably all year with a gently breeze flowing through the open windows and doors. I was struck with the concept that although no utility lines were visible, a lot of homes had a satellite dish in the front yard. Asking my guide about this he stated that the TV's and VCR's were powered by a car battery. No wonder the video stores were the largest stores in town.

He stated that when the battery ran down, it would be taken into town and recharged at the local gas station. Jokingly, I asked why he just did not switch batteries with the tour van we were traveling in to re-charge it? His reply, "I could not do that, it would be stealing from my employer."

Too bad more people do not have that attitude! There are many things to see while visiting this tiny Central American country, including Mayan temples, many exotic animals and birds, including Jaguars, and a variety of snakes and parakeets.

The Cays, located just a short distance off shore are beautiful with white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. Some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving can be found along this, the second longest barrier reef in the world. The food was surprisingly good, the first evening, dining in a bread and breakfast frequented by Earnest Hemingway I enjoyed a Red Snapper wrapped in a banana leaf, whilst sipping on a quart sized $ 5 margarita. Although the sandwiches we consumed for lunch were not very appetizing. I finally settled for my old favorite, a peanut butter, mayonnaise, lettuce and cheese sandwich. As a child, it took me years to perfect this masterpiece. Not sure why, but the waitress turned green when I ordered it. And she was an African American, never saw that before!

Fillet Mignon was to be enjoyed several nights, and to celebrate the complete of our expedition, the grand finale! Sweet and sour lobster kabobs were enjoyed while over looking the Caribbean Ocean from the top floor of a waterfront hotel. With the Belize annual rainfall ranging from 80 inches to 180 inches a year, it was rather difficult to imagine a day without rainfall, due to the large amount of rainfall most of the roads are nearly impassable even in good weather. Be sure to take along a chain, after getting stuck five times, the closest thing to a chain we saw was a Texan cowboy driving a Ford Bronco 2 equipped with a winch on the front. The normal procedure is to wait along side the road until enough people come along to push the vehicle out of the ditch, with the ditches being quite deep, some times this can take a while.

Looking at a Belize map it can be realized how small the country really is, only approximately 180 miles from the southern end to the northern border with Mexico, it is hard to imagine the rainfall could vary that much in such a short distance. If planning a Belize vacation, be sure to bring along a rain parka and boots. And a chain.

Discovering Candles


The discovery of candle can date way back thousands of years ago. Where candles originated is not really clear. However, there were clay candle holders found in Egypt dating from the 4th century B.C. * Pillar candles. They are solid and self-standing. They are usually round but may com in other shapes. They can sometimes have more than one wick.

* Taper or Dinner Candles. They measure 3/4″ to 1″ in diameter and 6″ to 18″ tall. They should be placed on a stable candle holder to be in an upright position.

* Gel Candles. They are produced from gelled mineral oils or gelled synthetic hydrocarbons. They are transparent, rubbery and are usually poured into various shaped containers.

* Floating Candles. They have a low, stable profile and are designed to float on water. They vary in form from simple, smooth designs to elaborate, realistic shapes.

* Container or Filled Candle are non-flammable, heat resistant containers which are filled with wax and wick. Containers such as heat resistant glass jars and ceramic pottery are commonly used.

* Specialty Candles may be found in any three dimensional shape imaginable. They can be molded or sculpted by hand and are mostly for decorative use.

* Votive Candles are normally 2 1/2″ high and usually square or cylindrical in shape. They are burned safely in small, heat resistant, glass containers to control the liquefied wax, as the candles burn.

* Tea light Candles are usually about 1 1/2″ in diameter and around 3/4″ high inside a cylindrical metal container. These small filled candles are used in food warmers or as candles in a tea light holder.

* Luminaria Candles are for outdoor use. They are placed in a container which is filled with sand.


History tells us the different sources of wax used to make candles. Depending on the type of candle, the ingredient also varies. Most commonly nowadays, paraffin wax is being used. Paraffin wax is formed by combining certain chemical substances. Thus, it is a chemical compound that is colorless or white, somewhat translucent, hard wax consisting of a mixture of solid straight chain hydrocarbons ranging in melting point from about 48 to 68 degrees centigrade. It is obtained from petroleum by dew-axing light lubricating oil stocks. Inside a candle is a wick which is made of cotton. It is where the light is produced. Scented oil and colors can be mixed. Others combine leaves, beads, or sticks for an additional trick and decoration to the candle.

The usage of candles is basically as light. As the modern life develops, the need for candles has changed so much. Candles have been used as air deodorant, decoration, even as wedding favors. Candle as a favor can come into many unique shapes, colors and designs. It is also very artistic to be used as a centerpiece on the reception tables in any occasions.

What Does SEER Rating Mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a number (between 8-23) that describes how efficient an air-conditioning system works. A higher SEER means higher efficiency and lower energy bills.

SEER is calculated by dividing the amount of cooling supplied by the air conditioner or heat pump (Btu’s per hour) by the power (watts) used by the cooling equipment under a specific set of seasonal conditions.

These ratings are determined in a laboratory where the exact set of indoor and outdoor conditions-specified by the US Department of Energy-are guaranteed to exist. Because each piece of cooling equipment is evaluated using the exact same conditions, the rating can be used in comparing the performance of equipment from different manufacturers. Higher ratings can be achieved by manufacturers who use newer or better technology in their equipment.

That’s why these ratings have a big influence on initial equipment costs and also why SEER has become an important part of manufacturers and HVAC marketing programs.

In the United States, all air conditioners sold on or after January 1, 2006 are required to have a SEER rating of at least 13. Window air-conditioners that are mounted in windows are not affected by this law.

The government is also offering a tax credit until December 31st, 2010 on 15 seer and above air conditioning and heat pump systems. Get up to $1500 tax credit explains all of the requirements to qualify for the federal tax rebate.

It is possible to see significant savings in cooling costs by upgrading to a more efficient air conditioner, For example, an upgrade from a rating of nine (older unit) to 13 (base seer rating now) could translate into almost a third less energy used per season. F.- Field Adjustments. To your newly installed equipment.

A.Air Flow. Without proper airflow, the desired temperature change across the evaporator will not occur. Make sure your ductwork is sized correctly for your new system

C. Charge.- As in refrigerant charge. Most manufacturers now a days recommend charging your new system by the sub cooling method. If your new system is undercharged by 20% it can knock your new systems SEER rating down up to 1 full point, so you paid for the 14 seer but you are only getting the 13 SEER.

T.Tight ducts. As discussed in Don’t waste your AC in your attic. Duct leakage can have a SERIOUS negative impact on your overall SEER rating.

Mercedes 126 Repair – The High Idle Saga

One of the most common Mercedes 126 repair challenges is a high idle. Generally, the culprit is electronic, but sometimes a simple mechanical adjustment of the throttle linkage will solve the problem. Of course, older engines are likely to suffer from intake vacuum leaks of varying severity, and these also can cause idle problems. We shall look at vacuum leaks in another article.


  1. The idle control module, located behind the false bulkhead next to the ABS control unit, is the most common cause of problems. The module processes a variety of inputs and controls the voltage sent to the idle control valve, which physically regulates the amount of air supplied to the intake ports whenever the throttle valve is closed. It is definitely useful to have a known working unit available for diagnostic purposes. While there is no one area of the circuit board that we can point to as a frequent location of cracked solder joints, there are four capacitors which tend to die with age. New units cost well over $200 and even rebuilt units are pretty expensive. I strongly suspect that, in most cases, all the rebuilders do is replace the capacitors.
  2. The idle control valve can suffer from two problems. The electrical solenoid can fail or, more commonly, the valve simply becomes gummed up with oily deposits. (Some of the crankcase ventilation fumes are routed through the valve.) A good soak in carb cleaner will usually cure this ailment. Be careful not to expose the electrical part of the valve to the solvent.
  3. Very rarely, there is an issue with the lambda control unit, the closest thing these cars have to an ECU. The idle control unit is connected to the lambda controller and “looks for” signals therefrom. Usually, if there is an issue with lambda control the engine will be running poorly anyway (due to incorrect fuel mixtures). If the lambda controller is not functioning at all, the most common reason is a failure of the over-voltage protection relay (OVP) located in the fuse box. There may also be a poor ground connection. The unit itself appears to be extremely reliable, possibly because it lives in a cooler climate — next to the front passenger’s feet.
  4. If the idle problem occurs only when in one particular gear, the starter-lockout switch on the side of the transmission may be faulty.
  5. If the problem occurs only when the A/C is used, there may be trouble with the delay relay in the fuse box, which is intended to boost engine revs when the compressor engages, thereby stabilizing idle speed under heavier accessory loads.
  6. Finally, the throttle position switch (TPS) on the side of the throttle body may be defective. This is very unusual and we should be grateful for that, since replacement of the TPS requires removal of the whole intake manifold. Sometimes the switch is simply out of adjustment and can be tapped back into the right position with a long punch.

The TPS informs the idle control unit when the throttle valve is closed, partially open, or wide open. Electrical continuity exists across one pair of three pins, across another pair, or not at all. If the correct signals are not being sent, the switch itself might be perfectly fine; the problem may simply be that the throttle linkage is out of adjustment. The switch is extremely sensitive; even the slightest opening of the throttle is enough to break continuity across the pertinent pins. So it doesn’t take much excess pressure from the linkage to disrupt the system. Ensure that the throttle valve is in fact closing against its stop.

One other basic factor to consider – and one which tends to be neglected in this context – is your ignition timing. Too much ignition advance will most definitely have an effect on idle speed. On the Gen I cars, there is a lot of scope for adjustment, and the engines can handle quite a bit of advance before they start to detonate (ping). Around ten degrees of initial advance is optimal. Bear in mind that the vacuum advance unit adds about 16 degrees of advance at idle (when manifold vacuum is high). Occasionally, the advance unit can cause problems, the main one being a rupture of the internal diaphragm and creation of a vacuum leak at that point.

Finding Work Life Balance – Knowing Your "Why" in Starting a Home Business

This article is about work life balance, something most everyone in the workplace is seeking. I know for myself the demands of work always seemed to be at odds with life and vice versa! Most of the key points that I developed for determining what balance would mean for my household I have placed here. Planning your life seems strange to many but I believe having a work life plan that describes what is important to you is essential to happiness and contentment. I hope these observations help you think and write down ideas that are appropriate for your situation.

I have focused on my why for doing just about anything and it has helped me structure what I was looking for and to pursue it with enthusiasm. I found that determining why I wanted certain things allowed me to determine their importance. Work life balance for me meant obtaining these goals while I maintained a full committed family life without interruption.

I ended up choosing to start a home business because it allowed me to find the balance between making money and fulfilling the commitments that were important to me! I had been part of ownership before in more traditional models and the time demands were no different than normal employment situations. In fact in those businesses I had less time for my family! My home-based business has allowed me to be there for my family while making a comfortable income from my home office.

All of us that choose to start a business have some reasons why! Some of these are main drivers and others just bonus features that draw us to self-destiny. To identify these drivers is very important and it actually belongs in your work life plan. For many, the reasons are easy, here are a few to think about:

1. Unlimited income.

2. All your time back under your control.

3. Control of your future.

4. The satisfaction of helping others find success.

5. Self esteem that comes from creating something yourself.

Finding balance for myself meant controlling my time while pursuing greater income. For others there are different priorities that motivate them, but the process of identifying these is the same. Plan your work life as a component of your total life plan!

The list can go on longer as you might imagine. But for some the list is more specific, it applies today in the here and now, here are examples:

1. I want more time with my young son.

2. I need to care for my ailing parent.

3. I promised my spouse a better life and we have had many setbacks.

4. My job is endangered, in fact, my industry as a whole is not stable.

5. I am disabled and cannot work full time outside the home.

6. I need the hope of a better future, not 40 years and a watch.

There are so many reasons, that it is worth your time to ask some questions, recall some dreams. Take some time to really focus on what is most important to you. Many have stopped being tuned into their dreams and given up hope. It appeared there was no hope of achieving those lofty wishes.

Now owning your own business and its potential of unlimited income, time freedom and helping others is accessible to everyone that wants to dream again. It takes drive and great commitment to make it successful, but it is worth tenfold what you invest.

Hard work needs an ethic to be sustained. Balancing the pursuit of material success needs the right tools and a plan. Imagination needs underlying purpose to stay creative. The energy for not only yourself but also all involved in your life plan comes from a deep well. Your “WHY” is that well that feeds work ethic, creativity and energy. This makes this concept so important and it should not be taken lightly.

Take some time and think about how the income, time freedom and service to others would change your life. Write a list of how the three benefits I just mentioned would change life for you. Next incorporate some of your own goals for 6 months, one year and three years down the road. Look for how your efforts could build the work life balance that would meet those goals and a clear mission statement will emerge.

Refine these thoughts into a concise meaningful belief statement that you know is true for you! This is not just some piece of paper; it will become part of your marketing and a purpose that rests in the foundations of your success. Believe me when I say, you will share this with many, as you become a successful entrepreneur!

As you can see, the “Why” that motivates is unique to each of us. Finding your why and putting it into a statement is important. You can draw upon its empowerment and motivation whenever needed. This proclamation is the substance that molds and guides the business you create!

Golf Tips – The Takeaway

Although there is some similarity between Croquet and Golf (both are played on grass, or should be anyway, both use balls, both are played by using some sort of club or mallet to move the balls, etc …) most people don ' t usually associate the two. However there is one way to relate the two sports in a way that may help you on the golf course with your takeaway.

Even if you've never played croquet it's easy to understand that if you want to roll the croquet balls accurately you must swing the mallet in such a way as to have the head very very close to the ground as you approach the ball and even for a few inches past the point of contacting the ball. This is why many, if not most, croquet shots are executed by swinging the mallet between your legs like a pendulum. It promotes an arc that is "flat" at the bottom.

When taking the club head away on a golf shot you need to do the same thing. That is, do not pull the club head up to quickly, but rather try to take it away slowly and smoothly so you flatten the "arc" at the bottom of the swing. This is especially important any time you are hitting off a tee with a driver or fairway wood.

To promote the feeling of a long, slow, flat arc on your tee shots imagine that your club (driver or fairway wood) is going to try to roll a croquet ball backwards from your golf ball. Your objective is not to hit the imaginary croquet ball a long way, but rather to start it rolling smoothly. This way you improve the motion of your takeaway which gives you a much better chance to return your club head on the correct swing plane to your golf ball.

How Would I Sell A Brick?

Well, I created a lot of discussion about OgilvyOne's contest to find the world's greatest sales person in my post. We've started a great discussion about professionalism in sales.

But the competitor in me has been whispering in my ear, "How would you sell a brick?" I've been thinking about it, using all my sales professionalism. There's something about sales people wanting to step up to every challenge.

Let's see, I've got to target a certain customer set (segmentation), within that customers set I have to find a customer with a compelling need to buy (prospecting and qualifying), I've got to understand that customer's needs, then I've got to present my solution and compelling value proposition.

I know all this stuff, so how would I sell a brick? Focus is important, so I've decided on three target markets: Civil Disobedience, Disaster Preparation / Relief, and Empowering Those To A Quicker, More Certain End.

Civil Disobedience: I went to college at Berkeley in the mid 70's (I think I've managed to suppress those pictures of me with a ponytail). In the spring, we'd always find some reason to protest and riot. None of us knew the mission, but we would be swept up with the crowd, and their enthusiasm. Prying up those chunks of concrete and asphalt to throw or build blockades was really a pain-it dampened our enthusiasm, we'd give up and drink beer.

That experience has made me realize I have a terrific solution for the Civil Disobedience market. Think of it, we have customers with a high sense of urgency, a real need to buy. We have a compelling solution and value proposition-save your finger nails, save the hassle, just buy my brick. Our value proposition is extended by the immediacy of supply-give me a few dollars, I'll give you a brick. Given the level of emotion, the sense of the moment and urgency, I do not think this would be put out to tender, so until other brick vendors come into my market, I can probably keep premium margins and avoid discounting.

I've even gotten the beer argument solved-yes you'll take some time to try to pry up asphalt, you will get frustrated but keep trying, eventually you give up and drink beer. I can shorten your cycle time by at least 50%, buy my brick, throw it, drink beer-which reminds me, I need to modify my product portfolio and make sure I have a good supply of Rolling Rock or PBR to sell as well .

Disaster Preparation and Relief: We've seen a number of tragedies recently-Haiti, Chile. We remember New Orleans. And more compelling than anything, we remember the story of Red Riding Hood and The Three Pigs. That one pig was prepared, and the secret was in one word: Bricks! Need I say more, the value of my bricks is obvious, now where's that order form?

Empowering Those To A Quick / More Certain End: I cheated on this one, Christopher Ryan was the inspiration for targeting this market in his comment on my aforementioned post. Some of you may find this a little distasteful, but we know there are those who are trying to put a quick end to their lives by jumping off a bridge or building. Often, they are clumsy, screw it up and end up with a simple splat. It is a market, I have not done the sizing yet, and the targeting may be a bit of a challenge. But the beauty of this market is it is a true solution or system sell. See if I just sold them a brick, they would hold it when they jumped, but they might drop it in their fright (we prefer to call it buyer's remorse). I wanted to come up with a better solution and pursue a larger revenue, and margin opportunity.

My concept is to sell a total solution, the rope or chain, and a bunch of bricks. We'd tie a whole bunch of bricks together (This creates a particularly great value proposition when jumping off things like the Golden Gate Bridge.) We'd need a rope or chain to tie those together. We can create even more value and differentiation by further enabling the customer to tie the rope or chain around themselves, ensuring they do not drop the ball (so to speak) when they jump. Now we've gone beyond a simple brick, we have sold a complete solution, again, I think with a compelling value proposition. Even though the market may be smaller and harder to find, the vastly superior revenue per transaction and margins might make this a real money maker.

Well, I've got my ideas sorted out, where's my video camera, got to pitch my solution!

It's very important that your home's attic is properly ventilated. If your roof does not have enough attic ventilation, both intake and exhaust, heat from your home will build up in your attic. Like I mentioned above, if you have snow on your roof the heat from your attic will warm up the shingles on your roof and melt the bottom layer of snow. Letting it run to the eaves and refreeze, creating an ice dam.

With proper ventilation, however, the heat in your attic will be vented out, keeping the surface of your roof much cooler. This will prevent the snow from melting as fast, slowing down the forming of these dams on the eaves.

The 2009 Building Code requires a roof to have 1 sq. ft. of attic venting for every 300 sq ft of attic floor space. It's best to have a 50/50 split between intake vents (usually in the soffits) and exhaust vents (either roof louvers, ridgevent, or other roof venting). While this is the minimum, studies have shown that doubling the ventilation in your roof to 1: 150 can lower the attic temperature 150% more than the minimum requirements.

We recommend getting as close to the 1: 150 venting ratio as possible to prevent ice dams from becoming a problem for you. It also has the added benefit of keeping your attic temperature lower in the summer, keeping your home cooler, and lowering your energy bill. Keeping soffit vents clear or insulation is vital to be sure your attic is being properly vented.
