Shopping For the Perfect Cocktail Dress

Compared with other normal gowns, cocktail dresses usually have shorter lengths. There are occasions that need cocktail gowns, such as a prom, a cocktail party and an evening wedding. It takes time and effort to find the right one. Follow the guidelines below and you will end up finding the perfect cocktail dress.

Popular materials include satin, chiffon and silk. With so many options, it is suggested that you think about whether you want a red chiffon dress or a blue satin gown rather than searching for all red, blue, chiffon and satin designs to decide what you desire.

How to Make a Female Have a Clitoral Orgasm: This Will Give Her Powerful Orgasms

It could be very easy to learn how to make a female have a clitoral orgasm because a woman’s clitoris is undeniably one of the most sensitive places that you can ever touch a girl. There are many things that you can do to give a girl orgasm though the stimulation of her clitoris, but not many men know about them. And if you want to make sure that your partner is getting enough of the good thing, you have to learn just how to get her to her special place.

Bet you’re dying to know why, so here are some tips on how to make a female have a clitoral orgasm:

1. Clitoral orgasm can also happen without you even touching the clit. Actually, you can turn on a girl by your words and your actions, and it takes great communication skills to do this. Many men don’t actually have this certain and appropriate skill. You need to talk to your woman as if you’re having sex. Men are more aroused when they see something that turns them on. Women are more aroused when they feel and think of something that turns them on.

2. If you really care about giving a woman the sexual pleasure that she desires from you, it wouldn’t hurt to spend time in foreplay. Even if the clitoris is the most sexually sensitive part of a girl, it would still take her minutes to get fully aroused. Perform cunnilingus and don’t be afraid to spend time doing it too. However, there is such a thing as too much foreplay, and you might want to avoid doing it too. Half an hour should be enough for both of you to pleasure each other, though anything above this might be too much for her to handle.

3. Did you know that the nibbling and sucking on the nipples give a woman the feeling that is most similar to nibbling and sucking on her clitoris? The body is made up of nerves, and there are just too many feelings that it could differentiate from one another. As it turns out, nibbling and sucking on the nipples or on the clit is the same, as far as the brain is concerned. If you want to, you can stimulate the clit and the nipples at the same time, and this is very effective if you want the clitoral orgasmic effect.

4. Clitoral orgasm can also happen when you thrust deep inside her. This is called deep vaginal orgasm, and it is one of the most effective things that you can do to give pleasure to a woman. The sex position is a big factor when in deep vaginal sex, and you might want to get into a position where you could penetrate your partner the deepest possible for you. However, you also have to get into a position where you could apply friction to the clitoris. The straddling and the cowboy position are two of the best positions to get into if you want deeper penetration.

Knowing how to make a female have a clitoral orgasm is easy, but actually giving her a clitoral orgasm could be hard. You need to know how to give all of these when you are having sex, but you need to make sure that you do not over-think everything as this could affect your erection and the whole of the intercourse too. Relax, be yourself, and make your woman feel like she’s special. Pair these up with the tips that you have read above and truly your girl would always look forward to coming home to you.

Achieving "Goldilocks" Perfection in Your Fundraising Communications

Before you read any further, I have a confession to make- I am an English major.

Not I was an English major, but I am one. No, I'm not still working on my degrees- I finished them long ago (yay!). But, once a fusspot, always a fusspot-at least when it comes to language.

Which is why it might sound odd when I tell you that you need to be less formal in your fundraising communications, not more. When I say informal, I do not mean lazy, or imprecise-you're not excused from the rules of proper grammar. Those rules still matter, and they always will (sorry, but you really did need to pay attention in English class!).

What is important, is to make sure your writing is accessible and friendly. The last thing you want to sound like is a walking textbook full of arcane, lengthy, dense prose. Your donors have very limited patience for your writing, whether it's a direct mail piece, your newsletter, or your annual report. Now is not the time to impress your readers with how many years you've been reading the thesaurus. Your writing can be just as elegant and eloquent-more so, even-if you keep it simple and to-the-point.

One of the greatest compliments I ever got about the publications I write, was when a co-worker told me many years ago, "reading our newsletter feels like I'm sitting down and talking to a good friend." It was a casual remark, but I was very flattered, and many years later, I still smile when I think of it. She could not have said anything nicer, and the fact that we achieved one of our main goals-to make our marketing communications more likely to be read and remembered-was the icing on the cake.

Here is an example from George Orwell, the author of the classic novels "Brave New World" and "Animal Farm." He takes a well-known passage from the Bible, riveting not just for its message but also its lyricism, and "translates" it into modern-day gibberish:

I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Here it is in modern English:

"Objective considerations of contemporary phenomena compel the conclusion that success or failure in competitive activities exhibits no tendency to be commensurate with innate capacity, but that a considerable element of the unpredictable must invariably be taken into account."

Ask yourself: which passage would you rather read? And which one would you rather have written?

Keep it clear, simple, straightforward and elegant. You're not trying to impress your 11th grade composition teacher, you're trying to be sure your donors read what you're spending time, money and energy sending them.

Talk to them like a friend, and chances are good, they will-and they will be.

Chipmunks as Pets

As I was walking around a local pet store recently, I happened to see a Siberian Chipmunk racing around its cage, performing acrobatics that entertained a growing crowd gathered around its cage. It got me to wondering – do chipmunks make good pets? How would I choose one? What involves taking care of one?

Purchasing a chipmunk

First and most importantly, find a reliable and reputable breeder or pet retailer. A local veterinarian may be able to help you locate one. When you do find one that offers chipmunks, be sure to select an active one with bright eyes, a shiny coat and an undamaged tail. This will help ensure that your pet is healthy. Next, choose a chipmunk that is fully weaned, which means it is at least 6 to 8 weeks old, but no older than 16 weeks (as younger pets are more friendly and gentle, and can be acclimated more easily to you and your family).

You’ll also need to be sure a local veterinarian can provide checkups for your chipmunk.

Care of chipmunks

Chipmunks are very active and not at home in small cages. The best habitat would be a large outdoor area fenced with a fine mesh with an attached indoor section. Fencing should extend into the ground since chipmunks are known to be good diggers.

Chipmunks need a varied diet, with a standard seed-based food as a base. They’ll eat fruits and vegetables, too, so those should be provided at least once per week. The pets shouldn’t be fed every day, to encourage foraging behavior. Your chipmunk will store extra food when it is fed. Be sure that the food does not contain too many nuts or sunflower seeds, as these have high fat and calorie content. A standard rodent drip bottle will provide an adequate water supply, and you can also include a salt lick.

Handle the chipmunk often, but never handle the chipmunk by its tail! It could be damaged easily or break off. The pet needs a lot of human contact, especially when young, to become a tame and friendly pet.

So, to answer that first question, “Do chipmunks make good pets?,” yes. They’re not exactly low maintenance, though. They require a lot of attention, room, and a variety of food. As with any pet purchase, it’s best to do your research and make sure you have the time, money, and patience to provide a happy home to a new pet.

Fencing Strategy and Tactics II – Elements

In fencing the terms strategy and tactics are not well defined, and are often used interchangeably. Discussions of fencing tactics in the current literature address how actions are chosen and delivered in specific situations. The tactical tree (Szabo 1977, Barth and Beck 2005), the 4 or 6 category tactical wheels (Szabo 1977, Bradford, Thompson 2007), and various rules of thumb help the fencer make decisions about how to fight the next touch. However, these are not a well integrated, systemic view of how to fight the continuum of a bout, a tournament, and a season.

If we examine the elements of fencing, we can identify three different levels of activity: individual actions, bouts, and everything outside the bout.

(1) Offensive, defensive, counteroffensive, preparatory, etc. activities, typically termed actions or techniques or strokes. These are:

… recognized as single actions or combinations of actions within a fencing phrase,

… taught as individual techniques,

… executed in the moment,

… happen multiple times in a bout, and

… are the building blocks of phrases which have a start and ending.

(2) Bouts, whether 1 touch (modern pentathlon and classical epee), 5 touch (pool), 10 touch (veteran direct elimination), 11 or 15 touch (three weapon individual and team), best of 3 bouts (youth direct elimination), 15 touch (direct elimination), or relay (in team competition), are:

… a defined period of fencing, in time, space, and number of hits,

… a period in which the fencer must operate autonomously, with little outside advice,

… with problems that are highly dynamic in speed, timing, distance, line, and technique,

… in which the fencer must operate with his or her own capabilities, analysis of the situation, and choices of actions to defeat an opponent who is doing the same

… with time for analysis and decision making limited, forcing changes within the action or between phrases, while under psychological pressure, and

… constant pressure to perform at a level higher than the opponent with immediate consequences for incorrect choices

(3) Everything outside the bout – the pool, tournament, competition cycle, season, career period (high school, college, senior, veteran), career, differ in that:

… outside advice from a coach is available,

… pressure is relaxed, even if only briefly,

… more information can be analyzed and decisions made after more thorough analysis,

… time is available to change direction (between bouts), technique (between tournaments), physical performance, and even major objectives, and

… this period requires prolonged concentration and dedication.

If this analysis is essentially correct these three major arenas are those which the fencer operates – the action or technique level, the bout, and a long term (everything beyond the bout), Each level’s characteristics call for a different approach, approaches that can be defined by three key terms – actions, tactics, and strategy.

Biscuit Joinery

Biscuit joinery and dowel joinery are two easy ways to connect two boards together. These techniques are particularly useful when constructing cabinets, shelving or joining boards together to produce a flat surface, such as a table top. They are most popular when joining flat woods, such as plywood, particle board, or MDF (medium density fiberboard). You may want to join two boards together to make a custom width board for shelves or other projects. Here we will discuss a few tips for making your doweling or biscuit joining job a success.

First, we'll discuss what a biscuit is. A biscuit is almost like a flat piece of dowel. It is usually two to four inches long and is shaped like a football. A slot is cut into a piece of wood, the biscuit is inserted with glue, and then joined with a corresponding slot in the opposing piece of wood. The two pieces are clamped together and allowed to bond. Be careful not to squeeze out all of the glue when you use clamps.

Most woodworkers prefer to use a plate joiner tool to drill the holes for biscuits. You can use a router, but many people consider using a router more dangerous. Using a plate joiner keeps the blade encased behind a blade guard so that you can not cut yourself. Make sure that you study the safety rules and follow the usage instructions that come with your plate joiner, exactly.

To use the plate joiner, start by making your marks. Put your two pieces together and make a pencil mark where you want your biscuit to go. Remember that the biscuit will be hidden, so there is some play room with the placement. Simply set the depth of the blade to where you want it and line up the guide with your marks. You can set the bevel angle if you are not making a simple right angle cut. The motor should be running at full speed before you begin your cut.

You will notice that the cuts are slightly longer than the biscuit itself. This gives you a little extra room for error and makes a space for the glue to set. Simply position your boards together and line them up before you clamp them down to dry. Dry the Once, the joints will be almost color : as strong color : as a Dowel joint.

Using dowels for joinery is a little trickier, as lining them up must be precise, but it is still the preferred method for many woodworkers. Once you master biscuit joinery and doweling, you can move on up to learning mortise and tenon joints.

St Louis Weight Loss

As a child of the Show Me State and someone that spent their first six years of life in St. Louis, I thought it would be neat to pay tribute to my birth city. St. Louis is a wonderful city with a tremendous heritage. One usually does not have many memories from age zero to six years but I recall the Budweiser presence, the Purina smoke stack, the Golden Arch and the St. Louis Cardinals (football).

This article will touch on some interesting aspects of St. Louis, as well as provide an empowering view on Weight Loss. So if you are looking for that perfect body image, or simply trying to stop the insanity of being so out of shape, this article will prove worthwhile in the end. Or maybe you are trying to get over a poor body image. So read on about my days in St Louis followed by a quality weight loss insight.

Forty some years later and one of the great things that I attribute to St. Louis is their passion for soccer. Of course, the local MLS (Major League Soccer) franchise is in Kansas City but the amateur, collegiate and youth ranks of soccer in St. Louis is some of the best in the country.

As an adult, I managed some accounts in St. Louis while running a sales team in the technology sector. My favorite customer was Software Plus and their wonderful leads – Larry & Patty Malashock. Their Purchasing Manager (Blake) worked me over for low ball pricing on a daily basis but as a business partner and customer Software Plus was a real blessing in my life and to this day I am very grateful.

Other things that I love about my birth city include: Forest Park, Mother Roads, Anheuser Busch Brewery, Magic House, Cahokia Mounds, City Garden, The Museum of Transportation, Black World History Museum, Six Flags, Purina Farms, St Louis Zoo, World Bird Sanctuary, Cathedral Basilica and many other cool things like the Mississippi River.

Educational offerings in St Louis include University of Missouri and the St. Louis College and probably dozens of others.

Major sports teams in the city include the St Louis Rams and the St Louis Cardinals.

Sports venues in the city include: All American Sports Mall, America’s Center and Edward Jones, Anheuser-Busch – St. Louis Soccer Park, Busch Stadium, Chaifetz Arena, Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex, Dwight Davis Tennis Center, Family Arena, Gateway International Raceway, Hardees Ice Complex, Korte Stadium, Ozzie Smith’s Sports Complex and T.R. Hughes Ballpark, Scottrade Center, St. Peters Rec-Plex, TR Hughes Ballpark and the U.S. Ice Sports Complex.

One of my best memories from St. Louis was when my grandparents visited and I tried to hide in the backseat of the car in order to go with them – I missed them so much. Another great memory is when we picked up a stray cat in the middle of the night and half asleep I responded to my dad saying what should we name it and I replied: Coconut. What a great name.

If you are trying to lose weight in St. Louis, then you need to be selective in where you eat. There are too many choices that have very little lite or healthy fare on the menu. However, new eateries have surfaced in the last few years and your chances are much better than they used to be. Be smart about where you eat and what you eat.

Some Healthy Restaurants that we have heard of in St. Louis include the following:

Blimpie Subs and Salads, Amighetti’s Bakery & Cafe, Govindas and Sqwires.

Weight Loss in any city is a matter of consuming fewer calories than you consume. Energy in minus energy out determines your weight loss. When considering diet and exercise, most people understand that the diet plays a significantly greater role in their weight loss battle than exercise does. It’s really simple math. You can consume a lot of calories quickly but even the most difficult physical challenges can only burn off so many calories. And it is not just what you consume, clearly if you are genuinely interested in weight loss, you need to consider what types of foods you eat and when. Many foods have a positive effect on our overall health while other foods have dire consequences.

And don’t forget to be sure and grab an empowering image of how you are going to look AFTER you lose the weight. Because one of the best ways to lose weight is to get an empowering view of yourself as to how you are going to look after you lose the weight. Hold that image at the center of your attention as if it were you standing on top of the St. Louis Arches.

How to Arc Weld and Stick Weld

Learning how to weld is not as hard as you might think.

All you have to do is simply follow a few basic steps, to get that welding down pat. It's like baking a cake or building a house. You need to follow a set way of doing things.

There are a few basic and easy to learn steps that you need to take into consideration before you even attempt how to stick weld or arc weld.

A lot of the time, people simply just rush in "guns blazing" and when they have a go at it half a dozen times and they can not do it, they give up. Listen, like I've said, stick welding might seem a bit daunting at first. But once you learn these basic steps on how to arc / stick weld the whole process will become a lot clearer to you.

How do I know? I've been there and done that. I know how hard it can be to learn how to stick weld for a person who has never welded before in their life. Often the first timer will make a few silly mistakes that can spoil their first time stick or arc welding experience.

Things like:

• How to strike an arc and keep it going. This is a big issue for anyone who is learning how to stick weld. How do I do it? Why does it keep sticking to the job?

• What size welding electrode should I use?

• What type of welding electrode should I use?

• What about welding safety. What should I be aware of when welding? What will hurt me and put me at risk of injury? If you are new to welding, you might not be aware of what to look out for.

• Which way do I move the electrode?

• What power setting should I set my machine at?

All these and many more questions are what the DIY'er or learner welder need to find out. You need to.

1. Learn how to stick weld and arc weld the right way the first time.

2. By following a set of easy to understand step by step instructions.

Which means …

3. By having a successful first time arc welding experience, you will never have a negative experience, therefore your ability to learn will not be ruined by a bad first time experience.

How to Properly Select a Compound Bow – Make Sure You Are Looking in the Right Direction

So you are looking to get yourself a new compound bow? Luckily for me, you have already waged most of the battle of the compound versus recurve battle that is typically where most people start. Now that you have chosen to go this route, there are a few things that you need to decide. The first thing that you need to figure out is how you will be using your new bow. Will it be for archery purposes only, will it be strictly for bow hunting, or do you want something that is good enough to satisfy the needs of both? Next, you will need to figure out what draw weight and draw length you will need to be successful. What is let-off and how much of it do you really need? Are there any other specifications that you should be looking for during your search? Continue reading if you are interested in finding out where you should be looking.

First things, First

The first thing that you will need to figure out when you are determining which compound bow to buy, is its intended use. If you have done any searching thus far, then you probably already know that there are so many options to chose from in this market. I will let you in on a little secret; they all cater to a certain type of shooter. There are companies out there that make hunting specific bows that offer the shooter enough power to snag a black bear. There are also companies that make the most balanced archery bows on the market for target shooters. So you must ask yourself, “how do I imagine myself shooting this bow?”

If you imagine yourself shooting out of a hunting blind, then weight is not going to be the biggest issue, but you might want something that is going to have a smaller axel-to-axel. If you want something that can be used in a tree stand you will need something that is lightweight and balanced to help you zero-in on that shot. Looking to shoot at targets? Make sure that you get a compound bow that is balanced, has smooth cams, and can accept the use of an archery bow sight.

Draw Weight and Draw Length

The next thing that you want to figure out in your search for your next compound bow are the specified draw weight and the draw length that aligns with your frame. I cannot express to you how important this step is to your success. If you choose a bow that is too light then you are not going to allow the arrow to reach its full potential. If you choose something that is too heavy, then you will need a water break every 5-10 shots–if you can even take that many. Getting a draw length that is too short will not help your accuracy one bit, and a draw length that is too long won’t allow you to take the shot in the first place.

There are a few tests that one could do if they were trying to figure out their draw length and draw weight. If you want to figure these out a quick search will turn up the newest methods, but I believe that adjustable bows are the future. A compound bow that has an adjustable weight from 40-65 will get you all the power that you need for archery, as well as bow hunting. Also, if we are taking the average height [and its correlation to wingspan] of the average person, then getting a compound bow with a draw length that is adjustable from 27-29” should suffice. Remember that these are all based on averages so if you want to know exact figures for draw length then you can use the following formulas:

1.) Your arm span measured from tip-to-tip ÷ 2.5–this will get you in the ball park

2.) Length of the distance at full draw from the nocking point, to the pivot point for the bow on the grip of the riser + 1-3/4”– this will give you exact draw length, as well as arrow size!

The reason that 40-65 pounds is the optimal draw weight is because it gives you the needed kinetic energy to obtain a lethal (and ethical) shot when you are bow hunting. It also allows the bow to have enough speed to travel long distances for archery competition. To ensure you have the best draw length for yourself, the “sit test” should be done. During this test, you pull the bow string back to the full draw position while you are seated. If you can do this comfortably 5 times, then you are capable of using the bow standing. If you struggle, then you would be better off going down a weight class. Getting a bow that is adjustable will help relieve many of these headaches.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for something to get you in the vicinity of what you should be looking for; there you have it! If you are looking to hone in your skills a little bit further, then there are a few more specs that you should be taking into consideration.

You should make sure that you are comfortable with the brace height. The shorter that your brace height is, the more speed that you will get. Keep in mind that the shorter the brace height is, the harder the bow will be to control. If you are in a make or break situation against a mature buck, you are going to want a compound bow that will be easier for you to control.

Figure out how important a let-off is during your decision to buy. Let-off is the amount of weight that is “let off” of the bow when you have it at full draw. This means that is you have a 65 pound bow with a 65 percent let-off then you will only have to hold 22.75 pounds at full draw. If you are taking a lot of shots, such as at a competition, then you will want this number to be as high as you can get it, but 65 is an average in the industry. If you are looking to go out bow hunting, then this number does not particularly matter as much.

You guys may have noticed that I did not mention speed as a primary factor when choosing a compound bow. The reason that I did this was because that is usually where you find most of the price difference. If the bow is faster, then there is a good chance that it is going to cost you a bit more. I love a speedy bow, but when you are relatively new to archery and bow hunting, speed isn’t what matters most. If you are hunting, then what matters most is kinetic energy to get your arrow to pass through the animal’s body. If you are shooting in the sport of archery, then what will have the greatest benefit will be a bow that is precisely fit to your body, that is balanced. If the readers need a number, then I will say that 235 feet per second would be a good speed that will satisfy either of your shooting needs.

How Do You Install Your Own Plumbing And Drainage System?

The first thing that you will need to consider when undertaking any DIY plumbing and drainage are the regulations issued by your Local Authority or State Department covering these.

If you are altering your existing drainage, or installing a new drainage system you must always inform the local Building Control Department at your local council offices. You will almost certainly need to present detailed plans of the work that you intend to undertake and it will need to be inspected as the work progresses making sure that it complies with local building regulations. If you are simply replacing damaged sections, in most circumstances they do not need to be informed. However, if in any doubt – check it out. A simply phone call should suffice.

To begin with we will take a look at drainage systems.

These can be described as Foul Water systems and Surface Water systems. Foul water is anything that comes from bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, car washing areas etc. Waste from these sources must always go to your foul water drain system.

Surface water is basically rainwater. This can discharged into a soakaway, watercourse, surface water sewer or, particularly in older properties, into the foul water drainage system. In a combined system, the rainwater pipes are discharged into the foul water drains via gully traps which stop foul air escaping from the drains. However, modern systems are designed to keep the foul water and the surface water apart. It is extremely important to ensure that you do not connect foul water to a surface water drainage system. If you are unsure about the drainage system around your house get advice from the Building Control Department before you start any work.

Remember – If in doubt – check it out!

Planning

Before you begin, you will need to plan the route of the waste pipes. The main things to consider when planning the route of a waste or soil pipe are to keep the route as straight and short as you can. You must avoid making your pipe runs too steep. A soil pipe is normally laid to a fall of 1:40. This won’t seem very much but it is plenty. The rule of thumb for pipe laying is ‘a touch on the bubble’. This means that the bubble on the spirit level has moved to the higher end, but part of the bubble is still contained between the level lines on the spirit level. Remember – this is only a ‘rule of thumb guide. You can calculate the fall of a drain over a distance using a surveyor’s site level. If you do not have one of these available, establish a datum point and use a hosepipe filled with water to establish levels and calculate the fall from the datum this way. (If a hosepipe is filled with water, the level of the water will equal out at each end, measure to the trench floor from the end away from the datum to enable your calculations.)

Your local authority will be able to give you the recommended falls for pipework.

Putting in drainage:

Preparing the trench:

When installing your drain trench, you will need to make sure that you do not impair the stability of the building. If you are laying a drain run parallel to the building, you must ensure that any foundations are not undermined.

Do not dig the trench too long before laying the pipe when installing a new drainage system. Make sure that you get the pipes laid as quickly as possible and then backfill the trench as soon as the system has been inspected and tested.

The trench may need to be supported depending on the depth and soil conditions. Do not take any risks. If in doubt – add support to the trench to prevent it from collapsing. Keep the trench as narrow as possible, but allow room to work in the trench – say the width of the pipe plus 150mm (6″) on each side. The base of the trench should be clean and even and free from protruding stones or bricks etc. You may need to import a suitable material for the base of the trench if the existing material is unsuitable. Your local inspector will advise you.

Never use bricks and/or other hard materials to support the pipe in the trench. This will damage the pipe and must never be used as temporary or permanent support. The bedding should be properly compacted with hollows made to accommodate the joints in the pipes. You will need to provide a continuous and uniform support for the complete length of the pipe. Once the laid pipes have been inspected, granular material should be evenly backfilled and compacted to a depth of at least 100mm above the pipe. 10 mm shingle has often been used as a backfill material as, not only is it a uniform medium but is also a visual warning to anyone excavating in the area of the drains that there are drainage pipes immediately below. Above the granular backfill material, the original dug material can be used to completely backfill the trench. This should be compacted in 300mm layers. Be sure not use heavy compactors until there is at least 300mm of cover. Light vibratory tampers could be used sensibly to help with the compaction.

You will need to protect any part of the drain system that is less than 600mm below a garden. This is because of potential damage from garden activities and gardening tools. A 50mm layer of lean concrete laid 100mm above the pipe will be adequate to do this. However you could use preformed concrete slabs as an alternative.

It is important that all parts of your drainage system are designed so that all parts of the pipework are accessible to a set of drain rods. Therefore, a run of drains should be as straight as possible between two points. As a general rule, any change in direction of the pipework should be provided with an inspection chamber to allow rodding access. This will also apply to changes in gradient, all drain junctions that are inaccessible to a set of drain rods, changes in pipe diameter and at the head of each run of drain. Where a junction between two drains does not have a manhole, access should be sited on the branch drain within 12 metres of the junction.

DIY plumbing and drainage is certainly within the bounds of most DIY enthusiasts. However, you must remember that it is important to follow local building control regulations and, as always, it is ‘hard graft’!

Clogged Drains and Clean Outs

From time to time our homes may need to have it's main drains cleared due to a major back up at a toilet or tub / shower, etc. Even though this is not a glamorous job, it can be accomplished by the homeowner, if you have the time and the tooling.

When a clogged drain needs to be cleared, and you have already done some clearing of pipes on the inside of your home, then you may need to clear the clog from the outside. There is usually a drain clean out (s) on the outside of the structure. These clean outs are located (or at least should be) outside of the room or area where the clog is occurring, on the exterior wall. Look around your structure and you should notice piping at ground level or it may be just below the grade line, meaning you may have to dig a little dirt away to access the clean out. The drain clean out is normally a 2 "pipe and will have a plug or cap on it that will have to be removed to use an auger / snake for clearing.

Normally, depending on where the back up is, a simple plunger can take of some of the common or reoccurring clogs. Keep in mind that hand plungers have different styles … flat or throat-ed, (flat for tubs, sinks, etc. – throat-ed for toilets and areas that are not flat).

For a deeper approach, you may need a snake 'style' auger. There are many different types of augers available. When dealing with augers, they have a snake end that you run into the drain pipe. Depending on the auger being used, the tip of the snake is the part that does the work. They come in hand crank style, with a non-removable tip, sold at most retail outlets. There are powered tool type augers, that can be attached to a drill motor. Then there's the big augers that the professionals use. These type of augers can be rented or purchased and come in different sizes to accommodate different pipe situations and the tips are removable / replace-able.

Note: You may have to move some plumbing (pipes) to access the drain pipe coming out of the wall inside the cabinetry. This is the starting point for clearing your drain with a snake. Do not try to snake down a sink, due to it can cause damage to the sink / pipes below before they go into the wall. You need to take some plumbing apart. (Hey, you may find the clog in those removed pipes)

Cordless Drills: 6 Safety Tips

Most home owners own a drill. And if you are a woodworker, you probably have one or more cordless drill in your garage. Why not? They are versatile, need little care and affordable.

But unlike certain obviously dangerous tools like a chainsaw, many people thought that a drill is safe enough to be used without reading the manuals or taking extra precautions.

Do not take this power tool lightly. They can be very dangerous if not used properly. Follow these tips to make sure your drills work for you and not on you.

1. Read Your Manual

Sure, when unwrapping your new drill, the manual is the last thing you would look at. After all, who needs a manual for a drill right? Actually, if you fall under this category, you’re wrong.

A drill manual will let you know the specific uses of your bits, the limitations of your tool as well as other important details – like how long a dead battery needs to be recharged and what temperature or conditions that your drill is safe for use.

2. Use Common Sense

How common do you see a handyman leaving a drill unattended in areas where there are children and pets? Or use a drill with damaged parts?

Yes, you know that you should not do them as they are common sense, but few people actually follow them. Just like many peoples burn their fingers for touching the end of their bits after a long, tough drilling work. They know it is not a good idea to touch it, but they do it anyway.

3. Wear Proper Outfit

Always wear goggles or safety glasses when using a drill. There’s no excuse for not wearing goggles since they are inexpensive and the only things that could provide covers for your eyes.

Secondly, try not to wear loose clothing when using a drill. It could get tangled or snagged on the bits and causing injury to your bodies.

If you don’t mind being taken for a John Wayne impersonator, get a drill holster. Not only it helps keep your drill at your side at all times, it also helps free your hands when you need to work on high grounds.

4. Check Your Drill Occasionally

If you are still using a corded drill, make sure you inspect your cord. Look for cuts, splits or cracks in the cord. The least harm such damage could do is stop your drill from working. But touch wood, such damage could also give you quite a shock.

Occasionally, check on your switch. They are the one part of a drill that will show enough wear that you need to consider a replacement. But replacing it is simple. Just disconnect your battery leads and reconnect your new switch.

5. Watch Where You Drill

It does not matter if you use goggles if you do not watch where you drill.

For example, you should not drill directly above or below electrical sockets because chances are, there are wires hidden in the wall. You should also put extra care when boring holes in walls that are shared with your bathroom. You do not want to hit the pipes in the wall.

6. Keep informed

Once in a while, when connected to the internet, browse for news of cordless drill recalls and see if your model or the model that you are thinking of buying are recalled due to manufacturer defects.

Like cars, phones and other man-made gadgets and tools, drills get recalled too. The famous drill manufacturer, Dewalt has recalled their tool before. So do the company called Harbor Freight which recalled its drill because the switch could get heated, posing a fire and burn hazard.

These are simple, yet important safety tips when using a drill. Sure, skip them if you want, but you’re doing so at your own peril. A cordless drill is an amazing power tools, but not only can it help you in your work, it could also be dangerous if taken lightly.
