Power Tools History

Since the ancient Egyptians began using a hand-powered lathe centuries ago, man has striven to make arduous building and assembling tasks easier, quicker, and more efficient through power tools. We’ve come a long way from those sand-covered turning machines, but the end goal is no different from our desert-dwelling ancestors. Today, nearly every home in every industrialized country houses and uses power tools.

Even though the concept of the power tool has been around for a long time, it wasn’t until the late 1800’s when the first modern-era power tools became possible. The advent of electric motors made highly-efficient stationary and portable power tool technology a reality, and high-speed assembly lines made power tools both affordable and profitable.

The Bosch company was at the forefront of power tool technology in those early years. Founded in 1886 Germany by Robert Bosch, the company initially focused on automobile components with integrated electric parts, and was responsible for such developments as the first low-voltage magneto ignition. Before long, companies in other industrialized nations began developing the first electric power tools, and Bosch introduced its first power drill in 1932. Today, Bosch still engineers and manufactures automotive parts, and its power tool division has grown to include nearly every household and assembly tool on the market – including power drills, belt sanders, circular saws, and more. As part of the company’s growth, it has acquired other successful power tool manufacturers that started during the same early 20th century era.

In 1923, American inventor Raymond DeWalt introduced the world’s first radial arm saw, a sliding circular saw that could make long cuts with accuracy. One year later, he founded the DeWalt power tool company in Baltimore, Maryland; another company that has grown substantially over the last 85 years. At the forefront of portable power tool technology, DeWalt’s power tools are revered by carpenters and homeowners alike for their long-life, durable cordless battery-styled power drill, circular saws, and other power tools; and the company currently manufactures over 200 types of power tools worldwide.

Founded in 1915 in Japan, the Makita Corporation has also staked its reputation on cordless, battery-powered power tools – most notably, the hand-held drill, which Makita introduced in 1978. Nine years later, the company had a full arsenal of cordless, professional-grade power tools for contractors. Today, Makita manufactures over 350 different power tools, both portable and stationary, and the pronounced teal color emblazoned on all of their tools is often mimicked by others trying to capitalize on Makita’s reliable name.

The early 20th century proved to be a hotbed of power tool advancements, and many companies worked hard to develop profit-turning innovations that moved their products off store shelves and into people’s homes. While the term power tool traditionally conjures thoughts of electric drills and sanders, machines like the pipe threader and utility pump are also considered power tools. This is the area the Ridgid company focused on when it was founded in Elyria, Ohio, in 1923. Still a leader in the plumbing tool industry, Ridgid now has a power tool division that focuses exclusively on contemporary power tools and has released its own saws, drills, and even air tools.

A.F. Siebert founded the Milwaukee Electric Tool Company one year later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known for manufacturing heavy-duty power tools, Milwaukee is best know for the ‘Sawzall,’ one of the most widely-used reciprocating saws in the world. Like their power tool manufacturing competition, Milwaukee currently produces portable and stationary power tools like circular saws, drills, band saws, grinders and sanders – over 500 different models in all. Unlike their competition, many of Milwaukee’s power tools are released in both 120 and 230 volt models, drawing the line between household and commercial/industrial power.

Best known for the Skilsaw they invented in 1924, the Skil power tool company evolved out of the Michel Electric Handsaw Company when they entered the power tool market. Fueled by the ingenious circular saw invention, the company elevated itself to the upper echelon of the small power tool industry with jig saws, grinders, sanders, and a whole slew of handheld, cordless power tools. In 1996, the Bosch company purchased Skil but still keeps its power tools on shelves worldwide as one of the most popular power tool lines on Earth.

The Delta company has changed hands several times since it was founded by Herbert Tautz in 1919 in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin garage. Tautz focused on small tools but when Delta was purchased by Rockwell in 1945, the company made a profitable shift to the stationary tools – like planers and bench sanders – it’s renowned for today. Delta isn’t the only name this line has carried, however; Rockwell enveloped the company on takeover before selling it to Pentair, which re-introduced the Delta name before selling out to Black & Decker in 2004.

A veritable power tool power house, the Craftsman brand was coined by the Sears company in 1927. At first, the company primarily manufactured common hand tools like hammers and screwdrivers; but soon jumped on the power tool bandwagon and is now one of the top-selling producers of all power tools, both stationary and portable.

S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker founded the Black & Decker small machine shop in 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland; and the duo found their niche in the power tool industry by inventing the electric drill seven years later. The pistol-grip and trigger style drill became popular and is now a staple on construction sites and in households alike. Realizing the profit potential of power tools, Black & Decker has grown and acquired several other popular power tool brands, including DeWalt, Porter Cable, Delta, and Kwikset.

As industrialized nations become increasingly technology-driven, power tool production stands to increase as lightweight, powerful, and longer-lasting batteries try to match the power and reliability of corded power. Versatile contemporary models and thousands of accessories continue to make everything from woodworking to metal machining easier, more efficient, and more profitable for manufacturers, contractors, and homeowners alike. As power tools have become affordable for nearly everyone, only the hammer has resisted an electric redesign destined to change the way we work forever.

Working As a Food Engineer

Food engineers perform a wide variety of jobs, and these jobs are incredibly important in terms of food safety and quality. Students who wish to become food engineers often complete a bachelor’s degree in agriculture or food science before entering the field. They must learn the rules of safety, preparation and storage, and the chemical processes that result in the creation of new products. Since these jobs are so important to the health and welfare of the general population, food engineers actually play a much more important role than many people believe. They tend to work for companies such as Frito Lay, Nabisco, Tyson, and other large processing companies to ensure that the food put on the market is of high quality and is safe to consume.

Other engineering jobs for food engineers involves working for agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These regulatory agencies provide jobs in engineering to professionals who can help them monitor the quality of new products and to make sure that farmers and other agriculturalists are following food safety measures. Other engineering jobs may be offered to individuals looking to create new products such as pharmaceuticals or supplements.

Another popular area for jobs in engineering for food safety specialists involves creating new storage equipment that will help maintain high-quality products for longer periods of time. These individuals may work with companies like Walmart or other food distributors to consult on new methods for food preservation and quality control. They may also conduct research on certain foods to see what the ideal storage conditions are for these items and design plans for implementing these conditions in the stores.

Working as a food engineer requires several important skills, including organization, attention to detail, creativity, and excellent analytical skills. Food engineers may have to create reports about food safety precautions, regulatory measures, or reviews of restaurants and their food safety hazards. Therefore, strong writing skills are also an advantage in this field.

Detachment – A Key to Faster Manifesting

"When you want nothing, you can have everything". Wanting nothing means you already are in a state of having it.

I realize that the most challenging step in manifesting a magical moment is detachment.

You intend, you visualize, and then you let it go and you repeat this process again and again until what you desire manifests in the material world.

There is a gap between the thought process and the actual manifestation in the physical world. That gap is your safety valve. In that gap, you can perfect the vision of what you have intended. After you have perfected the vision, you let it go. Much like encircling it in a bubble and then releasing it. We all have played with this when we were little. This is what detachment is about.

What detachment calls for is faith. Not blind faith but the intuitive knowledge that if something is good for you in the long run, it has to manifest.

The only discipline you need is sustained focus on that which you desire the most. However you also need to let go. To let it go, you need to go into the space of infinity where lies unlimited potential.

There is only one thing that the sages keep repeating in the books. There is nothing that is not contained in you. You simply have to access it. To access it, you need to be internally still. To be internally still is to trust. To trust in yourself.

I quote the excerpt of my book for those of you who have not yet read it.

Synopsis of My Journey to an Integrated Life

We look deep within and figure out what stirs our soul.

Once we make the decision of what is important in our lives, the universe opens up possibilities to get there, but we have to take a leap of Faith, where ever and however we find it, that we will be supported in our decision

Book Excerpt

The cube is a symbol of stability. It is also a symbol of total balance. Sometimes it is used to symbolize truth.

To me, the cube is a symbol of perfection, it is a symbol of an integrated life. An integrated life is a life led by an integrated person.

In it, there is perfect harmony between wants and needs, be they spiritual, financial, physical, mental or relationship needs and wants. For each individual, such a perfect balance exists, and such balance can only be determined by the person living his or her life.

Paradoxically, achieving balance in all areas of our lives is not a static process but rather a very dynamic one. Our needs and wants change.

Everything outside of us changes. Our bodies change. How then do we achieve this balance when everything changes? We must bring ourselves back to that which is immutable, our divine Self which is unchanging.

It is pure, perfect, endowed with infinite wisdom and has within it all the knowledge required to make sound decisions. All we have to do is remember it.

When we remember this Self, we are in the moment, and all of our thoughts and actions or inactions are perfect for that moment.

An integrated life is a series of perfect moments, arranged like pearls in a necklace that has no clasps.

Blown-in Cellulose Insulation

Maximizing the insulation for your green home is the most important step you can take towards reducing the heating and cooling energy requirements of your home. Many options are available to you, such as fiberglass batt, rigid or blown-in insulation. Let’s look at cellulose blown-in insulation, which, in my opinion, is one of the greenest options available today.

Why Use Blown-in Insulation?

Cellulose blown-in insulation is made of post-consumer, recycled paper, most often newspapers. With the new blowers available today, the insulation can be blown in and compacted to a high density. This will eliminate the settling of the insulation, which is what has happened with blown-in insulation applied 10 or so years ago.

By the way, did you know that fiberglass batt insulation also settles, especially if it was not installed properly, which sadly happens very often?

Blown-in insulation is the best option to make sure that the insulation is applied tightly and continuously around electrical outlets, piping, wiring and ductwork. It can reduce air leaks considerably, compared to having batt insulation installed. All those special boxes you can buy to prevent air leaks around electrical outlets have been developed to fix improperly installed batt insulation.

Doing it right in the first place is better, cheaper and saves you headaches and money in the future. A tight, high R-value insulation will also increase the comfort of your green home, and will minimize the required energy use for heating and cooling. A solar heating system can be sized smaller and will therefore also be more affordable.

Most providers of cellulose blown-in insulation operate within a limited geographical area, because the transportation of the insulation beyond a certain range is not feasible, due to the high ratio of volume/pound of the insulation. This means that you would be fulfilling another critical green component: buy local!

Where would I apply Blown-in insulation?

Besides insulating all exterior walls with blown-in insulation, you can also apply it in the garage ceiling and the attic floor.

Those living in the cold climates are familiar with the dangers of having ice-dams form. The dams form when the attic insulation has gaps and leaks. The heat from the rooms below will escape upwards and melt the snow on the roof. It then freezes again and an ice dam forms. More snow is melted, ice builds up and thaws again. The ice dam grows. The water from the melting ice cannot run down on the roof, because it is blocked by the ice dam. The path of least resistance is through the roof and into your home.

It takes skilled contractors to install batt insulation correctly at the edges where walls, attic and roof framing meet. Often the contractors do not take the time, or don’t know how, to prevent gaps and leaks in the batt insulation they apply. Blown-in insulation will reach those nooks and crannies and fill them up with insulation, thereby preventing heat from escaping and ice dams from forming.

Additional Benefits of Blown-in Insulation

Highly pact cellulose insulation inherently also prevents air penetration. Fiberglass batt insulation relies on correctly installed sheathing, gaskets, siding, etc.. Unfortunately these are very rarely installed correctly.

In addition to providing excellent thermal insulation, cellulose blow-in insulation will also provide very good sound proofing between rooms, from noisy pipes, showers and bathtubs. The spaces around bathtub and shower basins can easily be filled with blown-in insulation. Family members coming home late and wanting to take a shower, will no longer wake everyone up when the water runs. Of course, they might still slam the doors…

Insulating the wall between the family room and adjoining bedrooms is another good application of blown-in insulation. You will be able to sleep, while other family members play music, watch TV, and laugh in the family room.

If you have a door to separate the family room, you can turn the thermostat down in this room when it is not used for longer periods of time. With the insulation in between the family room and adjoining rooms, you will not loose heat from the warmer rooms to the cooler family room.

Any room that is only used occasionally, such as guest rooms, rooms for children who are away at college, can be thermally separated from the rest of the house by filling the walls with insulation.

What about Mold?

Cellulose insulation is treated with non-toxic boric compounds to protect it from mold. This treatment also provides fire and insect resistance.

I believe that one of the best options for providing good, lasting, environmentally friendly, non-toxic insulation for your home is to use blown-in cellulose insulation.

Reduce Cellulite And Stretch Marks Naturally

The first days of summer never fail to reveal a few bathing suit and short-clad cellulite thighs. It is a natural fact of life for women especially due to hormonal shifts, lifestyle, diet and genetics. During adolescence, pregnancy and women are most prone to develop cellulite because of the inevitable fluctuation of hormones. The lumpy unsightly depressions in skin can also be a result of toxin buildup in the body that forces fatty tissue into the sub dermal layer.

Internal Cleanse

There are ways to diminish the appearance of cellulite naturally. For starters, we can remember to flush the toxins from our bodies by staying hydrated. An organic green tea cleanse is a great way to give your body an internal cleanse while managing your weight.

Applying Skin Care Oils

Neroli, juniper berry, geranium, orange and lime oil nourish the skin while stimulating blood circulation for reduced cellulite. When combined with mandarin and almond oils, Neroli promotes cell growth and strengthens thin skin naturally eliminating the appearance of cellulite. Sluggish blood circulation can lead to pockets of fat tissue to build in your skin, but these oils applied topically generate a natural flow that inhibits the formation of cellulite.

Move and Feed Your Body

Nothing gets your blood pumping like exercise. A daily workout that gets you sweating is a two-prong solution to the lumpy flesh syndrome. You will sweat releasing toxins, while building muscle that shoves cellulite to the sidelines– out of sight. A diet to match your exercise routine will usher in smooth "cottage cheese-free" skin. And by diet, I mean balance: sourcing all the food groups with a smorgasbord of organic whole foods.

Elastic Skin or Stretch Marks?

After a bout of weight gain and loss; pregnancy, or adolescent growth spurts you may look at your skin one day to discover, you guessed it, stretch marks. As we age our skin does not quite bounce back the way it used to when stretched beyond its capacity: that's when the stretch marks show up. It may be hard to avoid in a long life of growing into our skin, but nature has provided some truly reliable botanicals to remedy your Elasti-Girl blues.

That same bottle of Neroli oil you purchased to treat cellulite can also be applied to minimize stretch marks in your skin. Dehydration can lead to loss of elasticity and that's when these marks take hold of your otherwise smooth skin.

With that in mind, lather and drench skin in moisture rich cocoa butter and Shea butters. These ancient skin care butters not only hydrate but help your skin to retain moisture for extended periods of time, more so than any moisture remedy. They naturally erase blemishes in short time and completely nourish far beneath the epidermal layer for supremely healthy vibrant skin that defies the visible signs of aging, as well as stretch marks.

Health Benefits of Bicycle Riding

I loved riding my bike as a kid. We would ride all around town and back and forth to school. After school we got together to ride bicycle and talk about what happened at school, our worries, our dreams. Bike riding kept us healthy, busy and happy. As an adult I realize bike riding offers many benefits for the body, as well as for the spirit. Now that I am in my 40’s I started again to enjoy it. One of the things the doctor ordered was exercise to be in better health condition.

Bicycling is a good cardiovascular exercise that could increase the health of your heart. A bike with several speeds will allow you to increase you fitness level as your cardiovascular function improves. Begin by riding at an easy speed over even ground. If what you want is a challenge change your terrain.

Bicycling is kind to the joints. As we get older we experience Joint pain especially in the knees as they Osteoporosis causes joint problems to worsen because of the lack of proper calcium levels in the bones. Bike riding offers exercise without pain. The aerobic benefit is comparable to jogging or running without the strain. Check that the seat height on your bike is adjusted to allow your legs full range of motion with each revolution. Full range of motion also promotes better circulation to the lower extremities which do the majority of the work in moving the bicycle.

Bicycling whips those leg muscles into shape. For muscular endurance, stick to a flat terrain, but adjust the speed of the bike as your strength improves. To avoid cramping, stretch thoroughly before and after each bike ride.

Bicycling increases your balance. Learning to ride a bike is all about staying upright. To do that, you have to find a balance between your body and the bike. Maintaining that balance strengthens the core muscles of the abdominal region. Tightening the core muscles keeps you from falling off of the bike. The lower abdominals pull your legs back towards you body from the bottom of the cycling revolution. The lower back is also kept pain free by a strong balanced core.

It’s also great way to release your stress from daily work either if you work at home or have a regular job. You can do it inside the house with an exercise bike, but also you can take your bike out and enjoy nature. Families, friends, can share the experience which can help you be together and give the opportunity to communicate with each other. I believe that we as families, friends, have to look for common grounds to share with each other as we do with friends. Feeling good with yourself and with your loved ones, is one of the greatest benefits you can get from this exercise.

Bike Repair and Maintenance

Keeping your bicycle at its optimum performance is basic for receiving the benefits of bike riding and riding safely. You can take it to a bicycle repair shop or do it yourself. Couple of things to keep in mind.

Take a good look at all bicycle systems and check for things that need to be fixed.

Brake system: Check that brake cables are not broken, brake pads should be in good condition and brake handles should work properly. Check the brake caliper.

Tires: If they had been flat for some time and look broken, consider changing for new ones. If the tire is all right consider changing the tire tubes. Before buying them check on the side of the tire its number. For example 20 x 1.50

Seat: Seat must be appropriate in size for you and comfortable. Consider cushioned seats.

Safety: Check that the bicycle has lights and reflectors to advice others you are on your way. Consider installing a bell or a horn to let others know you are moving through.

Prepare a small bicycle bag with tube patches or air filler, tools that can help in case you need to change a broken bicycle part when riding. Is recommended to have a frame bicycle pump. Have available a water bottle for hydration. There is one that you can install on the frame.

Other bicycle parts to check: bicycle chain, pedals, bike stand, handles grips,

Riding a bike is not just for kids. The physical benefits increase as you get older. Besides, bike riding is just plain fun. So, get moving!

Bar Code Label Makers

Bar code label makers are special computer programs that can design templates for bar code labels. These programs can perform tasks such as sizing the bar code, encoding the numerical information, database features and include other information such as name of company, product name, date of packaging and other customized details.

Programs to design bar code labels are similar to desktop publishing programs. Sizing, resizing and other tools decide label sizes, i.e. borders. Inputting a number will create the bar code. There are also tools to print bar codes in a sequential number format. The customized bar codes are then fitted into the border where required.

Bar code label makers have their own set of true type fonts. Sans-serif fonts like Unicode and Arial are popular in designing bar code labels. Required details such as the name of the company, name of the product, date, etc. are inserted. This text can be resized and properly aligned into the template.

Coloring the bar code label is also possible. Label makers have their own custom colors. Some of them even provide palettes to create any desired hue.

Once the label is done, it is sent to a printer for printing. A laser printer is preferred for its high quality and fast speed. The labels are usually printed in rows and columns on a special A4 sized paper that has a shielded adhesive surface beneath. Individual labels are cut and removing the shielding paper, the prepared bar code labels are stuck on the inventories.

Designing a bar code label using a program is a very easy process. It requires very little or no training at all. The interfaces of these programs are generally kept very simple and with a few clicks of the mouse, desired labels can be made.

Hitting Long Irons

Long irons are the golf clubs from the 1-iron to the 5-iron. These clubs have relatively long shafts with the 1-iron having the longest shaft. The club shafts get progressively shorter as we go down in clubs from the one through the five iron. The lower the number of the club – the longer the iron and the less angle the club head has to it.

The longer the shaft of any golf club, the more difficult it is to hit. Golf clubs with longer shafts force the golfer to stand farther away from the ball. Standing farther away from the ball makes it more difficult to hit correctly and accurately.

The best grip is a neutral one that is not held too tightly.

Stand far enough away from the ball to compensate for the longer shaft length. Ensure the ball is not too far back in your stance. Your ball needs to be in the middle of your stance for you to hit a low shot. Putting the ball inside the left heel will lead to a lifting strike.

The stance for the long irons is slightly wider than for medium irons. Set yourself up over the ball in a “square” position with your feet, hips, and shoulders on a parallel line toward your target. Flex your knees slightly to help keep your balance throughout the swing. Your weight should be evenly distributed between both feet. The hands are slightly ahead of the ball, and the arms are tucked in close to the body.

Swing the clubhead back along the ground for the first 30 centimetres, utilizing the body and shoulder turn. Gradually lift and cock your arms and hands when they pass outside your right leg. Cock your wrists when your hands get to hip level. The clubhead should point towards the sky. At the top of the swing the weight is almost entirely on the right side. The wrists are fully cocked, the left arm is straight and the full shoulder turn is complete. The club head should be directly over your rear shoulder once you get to the top of your back swing (for a full swing).

Lift the left heel off the ground about three centimetres during the turn from the ball. This prevents straining the hips and shoulders.

Begin your forward swing by unwinding from your hips. Keep your head down. If your head moves too much or comes up, the club head will bottom out before it strikes the ball resulting in hitting the ball fat.

As soon as the hips start the downswing, plant the left heel firmly and purposefully on the ground.

Strike the ball from inside the target line. A shallow arc allows you to sweep the ball with the club as opposed to hitting through the ball. A descending and even stroke takes advantage of how the club is angled. Keep your left arm straight.

Halfway through the downswing the wrists are fully cocked and the right elbow is tucked in against the right side. At this point, the weight is moving to the left side and the right side is beginning to drive into the shot.

Start activating the right hand and forearm close to impact with the ball. Once the club is parallel to the ground the right hand and forearm can stop the arms and club from rotating past palms perpendicular to the ground and club toe up, and make the club go straight up vertically. The right hand must force the club up in the vertical plane in order to hit the ball solid, straight and longer.

The longer the club, the more energy and emphasis needs to be applied.

Hit the ball with a descending arc ensuring that the ball is struck prior to hitting the ground.

At the point of impact your head must be behind the ball, your hips must be open and your hands together with the shaft of the club must be forward of the ball.

Swing the club level through impact making sure that you stay tall and your arms swing around your body. To keep your shot accurate and clean when you hit long irons you need to immobilize your head and keep still.

Your swing must produce a club face that is square at impact. Aim the bottom edge of your long iron just beneath the mid-point of the golf ball. The bottom edge of your long iron must contact the ball just prior to contacting the ground below the equator and the result will be a good flight path for the ball with proper loft. Make sure that the club face impacts the ball squarely.

Follow through

Complete the swing with a decisive follow through following the path right to the target.

Don’t forget to rotate with your hips completely after coming through the ball.

Looking for the Right Mobile Home Insurance

Finding mobile home insurance can be difficult, there are a limited range of insurers who provide a stand alone policy. Most insurers will provide mobile home insurance as an extension to your existing policy, however this can sometimes prove expensive. Finsure who are Irelands leading specialist Insurers offer a policy that provides a wide range of cover.

When researching the market for Mobile Home Insurance check the following prior to buying your policy:

  1. Does the policy provide cover to include your decking, shed and satellites?
  2. Are your personal effects covered while you are residing in your mobile home?
  3. In the event of your mobile home being destroyed does your insurer cover debris removal?
  4. Does the insurer provide cover for fire brigade charges?
  5. Is public liability cover under the policy?
  6. Can the policy provide cover should you decide to let the property?
  7. Are you covered for accidental damage?
  8. Are there any requirements that you must adhere to during the winter months?

Some tips that may prevent you having to make a claim on your insurance

  1. Ensure your water system is fully drained down between the 1st of October and the 31st March and the water turned off by a stopcock.
  2. Inspect your unit on a regular basis.

And finally it is important that you review your sums insured each year on your mobile home insurance. Most premiums are calculated by your sums insured, so it is important to review your sums insured each year as this is sure to reduce your premium!

You will end up spending some money on you holiday home, so you want to make sure you have all your angles covered when it comes to insurance. It is crucial to look for a provider to tailor for your specific needs.

The problem is most people do not consider insuring their second homes, holiday homes, or caravans, more often than not when it is too late! There are many simple maintenance tips that could prevent you from getting involved in a disaster when you turn the key on your holiday home on the first day of your summer holiday. Turning off the water for the winter is one tip, as well as straplocking up your water pipes. Make sure you have it well protected if the location is prone to storms in the Winter. For example, you could board up the windows.

Just be aware of the pitfalls before you consider buying a mobile home, not to mind insuring one.

Wood Paneling

Wood paneling has a way of screaming “the 1970s” when you enter a home. While many homes may still have the outdated paneling, dressing it up and giving it a fresh look can easily be accomplished on a limited budget. If an entire room or wall is covered with paneling, it can feel a bit overwhelming. But, taking the time to paint, refinish or replace is an easy update that can make your home more appealing.

Wood paneling has a way of making any space appear darker and gives the impression of the room being smaller than it actually is. In the right space such as lake or mountain cabin, wood paneling can create ambiance and provide a cozy atmosphere. But in other homes, it can just appear dated. Let’s further explore some simple ways of updating a paneled room.

Solid Wood vs. Plywood Paneling

Solid wood and plywood are the two primary types of wood paneling. Whichever type you have will dictate how to update it as painting solid wood differs from painting plywood. Solid wood paneling won’t allow you to fill in the grooves as it will eventually fall out or crack (this wood expands and shrinks with the weather conditions). Plywood paneling offers a few more options for updating.

Tips for Updating Wood Paneling:

Tip #1: Paint the paneling. A paint job will require sanding, priming and painting which will dramatically change the look of any space. The paneling grooves can easily be covered with wood putty or caulking to create a smooth surface. But, just painting the paneling can dramatically give the room a different look. Any online search for ‘updating wood paneling’ will return a wide number of results with varying tips on preparation of the panel surface. Some will suggest to lightly sand the surface while another suggestion is to utilize a chemical de-glosser. By doing either of these methods, the roughened surface will allow a better surface for the paint to adhere to.

Tip #2: Rotate. By simply turning the wood paneling 90 degrees on the horizontal it can dramatically change the space into a modern design.

Tip #3: Refinish the paneling. If the paneling is solid wood, then it offers the potential to sand, stain and varnish. If the paneling is laminate, it does offer the option to refinish. However, the stain may not be able to be evenly applied. If you are unsure of what the paneling may look like after being refinished, simply finding a corner or a spot that is hidden by furniture will allow for a good place to test to see if the refinish technique will work.

Tip #4: Dress up the paneling. Simply adding a trim detail can add a new element to any wood paneling. Decorative molding can be utilized to create frames, be used as a baseboard or as a crown molding around the ceiling. Other homeowners have dressed up paneling with wallpaper.

Tip #5: Completely remove the paneling. If updating the paneling isn’t an option, then completely removing the paneling can change most spaces for the better. Paneling can be difficult to remove if it was glued onto the wall surface. Drywall joint compound can help to restore the existing wall or install new drywall directly over the paneling while leaving the paneling intact.

Wood paneling conjures up a mental image in most people’s minds of homes built in the 1970s. With a little time and a little cost, any room that features wood paneling can easily be updated to a sleek and modern space that fits with the trends of today.

A History of the T-shirt

Know the history of the tee? How did the t-shirt get its start in the beginning of the twentieth century? How did the t-shirt become an American favorite? We’re now into the twenty-first century, and the t-shirt remains as popular as ever.

T-shirts of yesteryear were nothing like the t-shirts you know today. It was common knowledge that the first t-shirts, as you will learn, were clearly considered something to be worn underneath clothing. Certainly, the t-shirts of old were not part of a stand-alone industry, nor were they a mode of advertising.

Believe it or not, before the 20th century, there was no consensus that underwear should be included as an essential part of one’s wardrobe. Most late 19th century folks wore something like an extended shirt called the “Spiral Bustle.” Then in 1901 the predecessor to Hanes introduced for sale through catalog men’s underwear, a two-piece set.

The birth of the t-shirt appears to be accredited to the navy (and lots of sailors). No one seems to know for certain when the first t-shirt was made. As early as 1913 the U.S. Navy adopted a revolutionary new garment, a short-sleeved, crew-necked, white cotton undershirt. This garment was to be worn underneath a jumper. And what was the purpose of this undershirt? One must avoid scandalous sights, otherwise known as sailors’ chest hairs. The standard issue shirt had somewhat of the silhouette of a “T”, thus the name “t-shirt” was born.

It is also notable that during WWI while European soldiers were wearing cooler, comfy, lightweight, cotton undershirts in the humid, hot summer days, that American troops took notice. These duds were nothing like the American wool uniforms soldiers wore.

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary listed “T-Shirt” as an official word in the American English language by the 1920’s. Around the late 1930’s that companies including Fruit of the Loom, Hanes and Sears & Roebuck began the marketing of the t-shirt.

As of W.W. II, the Army and 12 million Navy sailors had t-seasy rider, hirts as standard issue underwear. “Skivvies”, these new, inexpensive undergarments became known as. America saw, began to get comfortable with, and reveled secretly, daily news images of their wartime sons, wearing t-shirts (dressed barely, but with pants of course). Underwear was being worn as outerwear. Rules were flaunted about undergarments. Taboos were violated with this show of male sexuality.

Still, by and large, the t-shirt was an undergarment meant not to be seen. In 1934, however, Clark Gable shocked everyone, as he stripped off his dress shirt in the movie “It Happened One Night,” to reveal no t-shirt at all. Women swooned, and men as well. Still, the t-shirt kept itself under wraps, to be worn primarily underneath a work or proper dress shirt.

The idea continued to quickly catch on, and due to simple design, a few years later, with the leave of many sailors during the war, the popular civilian “union suit” was reduced to a “singlet” or “jersey.” In 1938, Sears introduced a t-shirt they called a “gob” shirt (named after sailors). A “gob” shirt cost 24 cents. The t-Shirt would become an empty canvas, which was allowing men to present themselves in an erotic sense and show their gender.

The t-shirt was becoming appropriate to wear as an undergarment or as an outer one. The Marines standard issue white t-shirt was replaced with sage green for camouflage purposes. In 1944, the Army surveyed enlisted men as to preference of sleeves or sleeveless. Most preferred sleeves, due to better appearance, absorption under arms, among other reasons.

The t-shirt would never be the same. Along with worldwide upheaval, WWII brought along as well the first printed t-shirts. On display at The Smithsonian Institute is the oldest printed shirt on record. This t-shirt is from Governor of New York Thomas E. Dewey’s 1948 presidential campaign and sports “Dew-It with Dewey”.

After the end of WWII, the t-shirt became the garment able to clearly display and advertise it all: cultural affiliation, class, and sexual orientation. 180 million t-shirts were sold in 1951. The rise of the t-Shirt can be traced back to the movies, and of course those big-screen movie stars: Marlon Brando, John Wayne, James Dean, and a young Elvis Presley who did their part to make the t-shirt, outerwear appropriate, or sexy to say the least.

1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” featured Marlon Brando’s portrayal of Stanley Kowalski, lovelorn, brutish, and primitive, riveting viewers as his buff pectorals and abs revealed themselves as unveiled by a stretched, paper-thin t-shirt. Some felt the picture created was one of a dangerous, incoherent kind of manhood, a sexualized brutality.

1955’s “Rebel Without a Cause” showed James Dean wearing a t-shirt without another shirt overtop. He made the t-shirt cool, a contemporary symbol of rebellious youth. Still, t-shirts were meant primarily for men.

In 1959, Plastisol, a stretchable ink was invented, starting a revolution in t-shirt design. After that came the iron-on transfer, and finally litho transfer. Thus was the birth of the t-shirt industry. Now marketing geniuses, like Walt Disney, “flocked” letters and simple designs onto t-shirts to be sold as souvenirs to both men and women.

Still the advertising evolution of the t-shirt would be slow. The military was first to stencil company and rank on their t-shirts. Also, Ivy League Universities made clear advertisement of fraternities on their tees. Budweiser was the first to do actual “corporate-advertising” in the late 1060’s, when they sported a Bud can on their company tees.

During the ’60s, the hippies abandoned traditional dress for tie-dye. Of course, the t-shirt became one of the cheapest and easiest garments to purchase and dye. Folks began tie-dying and screen-printing basic cotton tees, helping it to even bigger commercial success. In 1969, t-shirt wearing hippies took on the Establishment in Easy Rider. Also, advances in printing and dying allowed more variety and the introduction of muscle shirts, scoop necks, v-necks and tanks into modern fashion.

Throughout the late 60’s and 70’s, the American Tee was in full bloom. Rock and Roll bands began to realize that they could make significant amounts of money selling their t-shirts. Professional Sports caught on and soon the officially licensed t-shirt became hot merchandise. 1977’s “The Deep”, helped to form the sexual revolution of the 1970’s by means of Jacqueline Bisset’s wet tee.

What about the t-shirt in the ’80’s and ’90’s? Remember Don Johnson’s designer-tee and Armani suit combo ala Miami Vice? And what about the most memorable recent tee-film from 1996 “Mission: Impossible”, just a bit of Tom Cruise, clad in tee, doing some serious hanging from a wire. The 80’s and 90’s both saw amazing production of t-shirts with improved mechanics of printing them in increased volume for increased availability. The American t-shirt has now become known as a commodity item. More than one billion t-shirts were sold in 1995.

And now, with the advent of the internet, the t-shirt continues to become even bigger. Tee art symbolizes the cultural and social climates of our generation. Tees tell the story perfectly, and now more than ever, the t-shirt is becoming an even more individualistic mode of personal expression.

Black Chain Link Fence

Stratification began when people started building fences. It has been a source of security for many and eventually, it also evolved as a means to add beauty to a place. Thus, nowadays, when choosing a fence, there are two main things that people consider: safety and beauty. Other factors, such as cost, may come into play and could also be among the topmost priority of homeowners. If you are among those who also take these into account, a good option for you is a black chain link fence.

There are many ways to provide enclosure to your place and different materials can be used to do so. You may use steel, wood, cement and you can customize it anyway you want. With a black chain link fence, you can guarantee that your place will be protected from stray animals and even people and you can be sure that it will last a long time, which is also an important matter. This type is also a budget-saver, it is cheaper than the counterpart and since it can stand a lot of negative elements, it can stay with you for a long period allowing you to avoid changing fences again and again.

It is important that you opt for the color black if aside from the above requirements, you also are after style or beauty. Black complements any color so no matter what the background will be, it will not look out-of-place. It also has an elegant appeal and should you choose to add accessories to it, you will not have a hard time choosing because almost everything can go with it. Admittedly, chain link is not a crowd favorite especially to those whose main concern is privacy. However, knowing the right tricks, such as using slats or planting ornamental plants can provide the same amount of confidentiality that other types can give.

You do not have to spend a fortune to acquire security and to beautify your place. A black chain link fence can serve these purposes and more. Moreover, should you not need it anymore; you can actually use it for other things because its parts can be reused or recycled – that is just so practical! If you want to learn more about it, you can search online and see how else you can improve its appearance. You can also find there the best deals available so that you can be sure that you will get the right value for your money.

A List of Popular Police Shows on Television

Positions in the field of law enforcement are some of the most publicized in the world. Almost everybody is fascinated with how police officers catch the criminals and the amount of thinking and hard work that goes into their jobs. There are a multitude of shows on television that feature police officers. These cop shows range from complete and utter fiction to more real shows that involve actual police officers rather than just actors. Often times on these shows officers will get into foot races with their suspects that involve the alleged criminals hopping over CT fencing and CT fences to try and get away from their pursuers, which more often than not still results in them getting caught.

The classic cop show that really got the ball rolling so to speak is Cops. Nearly everybody in the country knows what Cops is and it has turned into a very successful and long running show. The show centers around a camera crew following police officers in their cars all across the country and filming them doing their job. Of course the job entails lots of different things and sometimes the police are called to settle some kind of dispute, sometimes they have to pull people over in their cars and other times they have to make arrests and break up fights. Some really funny things happen on the show such as one episode where a man had manufactured and smoked drugs in someone's home, then decided that he would hide in the trunk of his car. The police spent a fairly lengthy amount of time figuring out how to get him out of the trunk and, to everyone's surprise, when they got him out charged him with crimes related to producing drugs.

Another popular show about police falls under the genre of comedy and is essentially a fictional, humorous take on the aforementioned Cops. Reno 911 also features a camera crew following around the police, this time only in the city of Reno. The characters on the show are all very funny including the Lieutenant Dangle, a down on his luck head of the department who can not control any of his employees. The officers on the show do ridiculous things and meet ridiculous people, such as one man who plays Dungeons and Dragons in his backyard and continually assaults people, and then tries to justify it within the context of the game.

Finally, another hit police show from the current decade is called, "CSI", and it is various and seemingly never ending spin off shows of the same name but with a city attached. "CSI", obviously to anybody who has ever seen it, is not funny but takes a look at the world of crime scene investigation and the use of forensics to track down criminals. Although the show is of course not entirely accurate, there are a few true things involved in that forensic evidence is often very important in solving crimes.

The world will probably not ever end its fascination with police work and watching TV shows that, sometimes accurately and sometimes inaccurately, display it.
