Safe Sex – Is it Really Safe?

Safe Sex is Good For You . . .

Safe sex is good for you – it’s official – medical science says so, everyone wants it and billions of dollars are made through talking about it and selling it in one form or another. However, in the world of bioenergy – where we look at what’s happening to your energy and how it affects your life – things aren’t quite so simple.

According to science, sex stimulates your hormone production, relaxes you, makes you happier and improves your health. But, the problem with biological or medical science is all the other things that are going on that it fails to notice because it isn’t looking for them or simply doesn’t have the means of finding them.

. . . Or is it?

Take Alison for example. She came to see us, suffering from depression, skin problems (dryness, rashes and itching) and fatigue, as well as work, relationship and money problems. She’d tried the usual solutions for her health problems but hadn’t experienced any improvements.

One way we look at any kind of human problem is in terms of the presence of foreign (i.e. other people’s) energies in the body. This is because, when your own energy is properly integrated, you don’t make choices that generate problems in your life. But when your energy is compromised by the presence of a harmful foreign energy (any energy not native to the body is toxic for it), you start creating future problems as a direct consequence of its damaging influence on your words, thoughts and feelings and thus on your life decisions. Although foreign energies are usually unfelt and unseen, they have an ever-increasing negative impact on most people’s life and awareness as time passes.

With one exception (see below), all foreign energies inevitably cause future problems for their ‘owner’ – and not just health problems. Because of the time delay between first receiving a foreign energy and the start of a future problem, it’s impossible to perceive with normal awareness or scientific tests, the connections between new problems and their original, energetic causes. Thus, foreign energies are not unlike invisible time bombs lurking inside you – often for years – before making their presence felt.

In Alison’s case, she had a foreign energy in her 6th chakra, which is found in the same area as the frontal lobes of the brain. This energy had a male polarity and had been there for several years. It was affecting Alison’s choices in areas such as diet, relationships, work, home environment and so on. She told us she’d had a brief affair almost five years previously, with a friend at work. Now that she thought about it, she’d first started getting rashes a year or so after the start of her office fling (the 6th chakra controls the health of the skin).

Having sex is the most invasive route for a foreign energy to enter your body. Even though your natural energetic immune system will eliminate most of your partner’s energy, some of it will remain behind. It will then start causing losses of energy from one or more areas of your life – your health, relationships, wealth, happiness, inner strength, etc. – depending on where it becomes stable. Your own energy – which enables your body, mind and life to function well – is displaced wherever a foreign energy stabilises in you.

Fortunately, Alison eventually overcame her problems by changing her life in ways that eliminated the foreign energy from her body. The changes she needed to make included moving to a place that was resonant with her energy and developing, with the aid of certain exercises and life practices, one of her innate but dormant abilities or “talents.”

Any Effective Remedy Must Eliminate the Underlying Foreign Energy

Of course, problems can often be overcome simply by taking the correct medication. But it’s true to say that any fully effective remedy for any problem – whether it’s a herb, an antibiotic or a therapy session – always eliminates the underlying foreign energy even though the doctor or practitioner will, more often than not, be completely unaware of it.

Having said this, the more energy aware you become, the easier it is to deal with the foreign energies underlying the challenges in your life. One good way is not to pick them up in the first place!

For example, in Hidden Secrets of Real Health (page 198), we describe a simple test for determining if your current sexual relationship is causing your body to accumulate a harmful foreign energy; or (the one exception) a foreign energy that is positively challenging.

A “positively challenging” foreign energy is energy received from someone else that provides you with more of the resources you need for developing your life, awareness and future well-being. This is the energy of an empowering heart [chakra] relationship. The heart chakra is an energy organ located at a slight indentation about two inches up from the bottom of your sternum. A “heart relationship” is so-called because it includes a resonance between two people’s heart chakras.

The heart chakra is sometimes called the “seat of the spirit within.” This is because those with sufficient energy awareness have observed over thousands of years, a very small yet very bright light at the central root of the heart chakra. This is commonly called the “spirit within.” And it is the only part of the human energy body that is invulnerable to foreign energies.

When a resonance exists between two people’s heart chakras, they have the innate capacity to rise to the challenges that naturally appear from time-to-time in any relationship. By appropriately responding to the challenges that appear, they become stronger and more integrated. Without a heart resonance, a relationship will eventually develop issues that cannot be resolved. Then it will either collapse or some issues will continue to poison or damage the relationship, and thus the people in it, no matter how long it may last.

Think Twice about Sex if you’re not in a Heart Relationship

If you aren’t in a heart relationship, you are better off without an intimate sexual relationship. That way you avoid accumulating life and awareness-damaging foreign energies. And you also increase the space in your life for an empowering relationship to appear in your future – which could be tomorrow!

If you are someone who is interested in developing your energy awareness or higher awareness to see beneath the surface of your life – so it doesn’t seem to just be happening to you much of the time – no form of sex is inherently “safe.” Effective traditional spiritual disciplines don’t advocate chastity because they suffer from some quaint sexual hang-ups but, rather, because people who’ve developed a real awareness of human energy can clearly see how it is so often adversely affected by sex.

So, in reality, “safe sex” is a somewhat misleading term. It may save you from some nasty physical bugs but not from the energetic ones. Think twice about sex if you’re not with someone with whom you have a heart relationship. This will never be a popular message, but you will have a brighter and better future in many ways, if you wait for an empowering heart relationship – and avoid the rest.

Maya Ceremonial Centers

The content of Maya classic civilization is very rich and can be summarized only in a briefest way. They consist of large pyramidal mounds and platforms made of earth and rock fill. Many of the Maya buildings are tremendously high and amazingly steep. As examples, the great temple pyramid of Tikal rise tower-like to heights of over 60 meters above the plaza floors.

The buildings which surmount the pyramids and platforms also were constructed of rubble fill and stone-block masonry. In some, as in the northern lowlands, the dressed-stone facing were no more than a veneer set in stucco. Walls of the buildings were thick and rooms were relatively narrow; roofs were vaulted with corbelled arches.

Doors were usually small and windows very rare so that the interiors of those structures still intact are dark and cool. Small buildings, of from one to three rooms, placed on the tops of steep pyramids, likely were temples; longer and larger buildings, with many rooms and set on lower, broader platforms, probably were palaces.

The ball court, a Maya Late Classic Period feature, was the other principal building type. The basic plan of Maya ceremonial centers, particularly in the southern lowlands, was a rectangular plaza enclosed on three or four sides by mounds. These plazas were often artificially dressed hilltops, as at Uaxactun, or terraced hillsides, as at Piedras Negras and Palenque. By successive layers of construction, the plaza unit gradually assumed the aspect of an acropolis, of which the famous “Main Group” at Tikal or the “Acropolis” of Copan is good examples.

Carved stelae and altar stones were set up in the plazas, frequently at the feet of pyramid stairways. High above the plazas, the temples and palaces were ornamented with intricate roof-combs, flying facades, and carved and stucco-sculptured decoration.

The Maya ceremonial centers were constructed and supported by sustaining populations of jungle farmers, but the archaeological record of this people is now only beginning to be set down. The ordinary classic Maya dwellings were probably much like the wood, mud, and thatch huts of their historic or modern descendants, and such buildings have left little trace above ground. Fortunately, many of them were built on small platforms of earth or stone, and a number of these “house mounds” have been discovered and studied. These studies indicate that dwellings were not closely packed in and immediately around the ceremonial centers. Clusters of mounds have been found close to the main plazas and mounds of the centers, but equally large clusters were scattered along the river bottoms or around the edges of lakes and bajos (swamps) several kilometers removed from the ceremonial centers.

There are some debatable exceptions. Some archaeologists claim that Tikal is the Peten was truly urban in its proportions, as was Dzibilchaltun in northern Yucatan. But for the most part, the over-all settlement pattern of the Classic Maya was a scattered hamlet dotting most of the suitable farming land. Interspersed among these hamlets were minor ceremonial centers, and somewhat more distant from one another were the major centers with their elaborate architecture and monuments. Presumably, several hamlets coordinated their efforts to construct and maintain a minor ceremonial center, and in turn, the total populations tributary to such minor centers coalesced with other similar groups to support major centers.

Mini Fridge – Benefits and Drawbacks

Mini fridge has become an indispensable home appliance for many people. It looks good for your mini bar. You can choose from many designs, shapes and dimensions. Perhaps you’ve seen one that resembles a big coke bottle or can. Without a doubt, this model is eye catching but may not be as portable as you want. No matter what it is, you have to take a few factors into account before making your decision.

First of all, how small a fridge for you to call it a mini fridge? Most of them are portable enough that you can carry it with you while traveling or camping, especially when kids are involved. Thirst and hunger are two things you’ll hear often, and a mini fridge will be a perfect solution. Make sure it has both AC and DC adapter though so you can plug it in into the car’s lighter socket.

For college students and cubicles, this appliance doesn’t need much space at all. But beware, some of them only keep the contents cool enough. Others are capable of cooling up to 40 degrees below ambient temperature. The latter is able to prevent ice in your juice from melting for five to seven hours, depends on the day.

Are there any disadvantages? I hate to tell you this but there are. Obviously, the first one is capacity. You can only put limited amount of foods or drinks inside. On average, half a dozen cans of soft drinks. It may or may not be sufficient for your situation.

Also, it is important to point out that most small fridges do not come with freezer. Of course, what could you expect from a fridge of this size?

However, if there is meat that you would want to keep frozen, this option is far from ideal. In this case, you may need slightly larger and expensive models with tiny freezer. Research around for your options. Obviously not all mini fridge is suitable for everyone.

Mini fridge is an attractive option for those looking for the convenient of a refrigerator with limited space. It will save you many trips back and forth the kitchen when you are watching the big game and want to say hydrated. You can also use it to keep baby formula cold and handy when you are traveling with the baby.

The Rolling Stones at Washington, DC RFK Stadium July 4th 1972

I grew up in the late 1960s a huge Rolling Stones fan. My godmother’s daughter (does that make her my godsister?) was U.S. president of the Rolling Stones fan club in 1966. I had all of their records and I desperately wanted to see them perform live.

So imagine my delight when in the Spring of 1972 tickets became available for a July 4 concert at RFK stadium. They sold out quickly but I managed to score a couple. Time passed very slowly for me between that day and the actual day of the concert.

We all piled into my friend’s VW and headed out. It was festival seating so we wanted to get there early enough to get decent seats. As it happens we arrived about 1:30pm and got the perfect seats (for a baseball game – front row behind the 3rd base dugout) and as the stage was being set up at 2nd base excellent seats for that night’s show.

So there we were, with 5 hours to kill before Stevie Wonder was to entertain us as the opening act. The pungent aroma of whacky tobaccy wafted through the air and bottles of cheap wine were passed around. It was a splendid atmosphere and everything was going along swimmingly until we began to hear a loud disturbance coming from behind us. It was shouting and chanting and it was coming from outside the main gate. Apparently, some kids were trying to rush the security manning the entrance and crash the scene!

Well this was all mildly amusing until someone yelled out “they’re shooting tear gas!” Which got us all giggling right up until the wind changed direction and started blowing the gas into the stadium. We stopped giggling at that point and tried to hold our breath. This worked for awhile, until we needed to actually breathe, and then it was unpleasant to say the least. Our eyes were stinging and we were all suffering.

Finally the cops got a clue and stopped with the tear gas. The air cleared and the first act took the stage. Stevie Wonder was fine. Almost nobody cared about him (which was a shame) but he did his thing for about half an hour and then got off the stage much to the appreciation of the majority of the crowd. Such is the life of an opening act.

Then another 45 minutes went by and finally the Stones took the stage. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones” then that was the same tour. Probably their best tour ever. They were supporting their new album “Exile on Main Street”. Lots of good songs on that one plus they did all of their hits to date (the very same hits everybody wants to hear today). Mick noted the historic occasion (he majored in economics and history after all at the London School of Economics) and congratulated us all on our independence.

I have been to four Stones concerts over the years and every single one produced an atmosphere that was so thick you could cut it with a knife. I don’t know what it is about that band, but they do two amazing things every time. They create an amazing atmosphere as I said and they relate to the crowd as though you were an equal. Absolutely no sign of “hey I’m a rock star thanks for your bread man and we’ll play what we want or not play at all, whatever”. It’s uncanny but you really feel like they’re your buddies from next door and that they’re just hanging out with you for that 2 hour period.

Well they played for a little over 2 hours and 3 encores and then it was time to stumble back to the car and try to find our way home again. All in all just the best experience that a 20 year-old could have had back then that didn’t involve Robert Redford and the Mormon Taburnacle Choir. Oh come on, use your imagination.

Bird House Basics – Do’s & Don’ts

Like weather vanes and sundials, bird houses can be as artistic as they are functional. Bird houses come in many styles, from gaily painted wooden antiques to sleek metal models to plain old wooden ones. However delightful they may look to you, you’ll want to make sure the birds find them attractive as well. Learn the basics in housing wild birds here.

Cavity-Nesting Birds

Only cavity-nesting birds (those that nest in tree hollows) use birdhouses. This group includes bluebirds, chickadees, nuthatches, swallows, and wrens. The type of birdhouse you install determines the kinds of birds you’ll attract. However, this is a most inexact science as a house may be intended for a wren or a bluebird, but it will be fair game for any birds of similar size that find it to their fancy. This can be a fun feature to providing bird houses in your backyard.

Small Birds

Small birds, such as chickadees, nuthatches, and most wrens, prefer a hole that’s 1 1/8 inches across. Medium-size birds, such as bluebirds, swallows, and purple martins, need a nest box with a hole 1 ½ inches wide. White-breasted nuthatches need a 1 ¼ inch opening.

Larger Birds

Larger birds, such as flickers and kestrels, take boxes with 2 ½ inch entry holes. Flickers usually like to dig out their own nests, but sometimes you can attract them with a large nest box. If you happen to fill it with wood chips, they’ll dig it right out.

Do’s & Don’ts

To keep bird houses safe from raccoons and cats, mount the houses atop metal poles. If you want to put a bird house in a tree, hang it from a branch. If you supply bird feeders in your yard keep the bird houses away from the feeders. Mealtime can make nesting birds nervous and scare them off. Wherever you plan on putting the house make sure the entrance is facing away from any prevailing weather. You can also remove the perch if it comes with one; they are unnecessary and house sparrows may sit on them to heckle birds inside the birdhouse. When choosing a bird house make sure it’s made of good insulated material. Bird houses made out of at least 1-inch-thick wood usually is good insulation. If you make your own bird house, steer away from using plastic milk cartons as they are too thin and have poor ventilation. The heat created with this kind of material can bake chicks inside or make them fledge too early from your birdhouse. You’ll want to make sure you can easily clean bird houses so look for an opening at the top or side of the house. Also drain holes in the bottom of your birdhouses and ventilation holes high in the sides of the house for summer heat are good things to watch for. Birdhouses should be up before migrant season begins around late February because they will be looking for nesting sites soon after they arrive. And lastly, if you decide to put up more than one birdhouse keep them well separated and out of site from one another. Just like humans, birds most like their space!

These birdhouse basics should get you off on the right foot. After deciding which types of birds you want to attract and choosing the right bird house for them, you should start to see a more active wild life in your backyard. Providing bird houses in your lawn or garden is a delightful hobby. Enjoy picking out your birdhouse because there a lot to choose from.

Plasma TV Maintenance

After you buy a plasma TV it is a good idea to learn how to maintain it so it will last you a long time – after all it is not a cheap gadget that you can change every few months without feeling a sharp pain in your pocket. So just make sure you know where the weaknesses are so you don’t abuse your TV in that area. Also it’s good to know the truth about some rumors like the one about refilling your plasma TV with gas.

The Recharging Myth

As a plasma screen television produces images, it uses electricity to burn xenon and neon gas in order to illuminate phosphors. Because of this, many people believe that the gas will run out over time. The notion of having to “recharge” your plasma screen television is a myth. The amount of gases consumed in normal use is minuscule, and they will last throughout the normal life of the screen.

Burn-in and Plasma Screen Televisions

If you leave a plasma screen television on for too long while it is displaying a single image, the television can suffer from burn-in. Burn-in occurs when an image is permanently etched on to the screen of the television, leaving a pale “ghost” of that image no matter what is displayed on screen. The burn-in was a major disadvantage of plasma screen televisions, one that wasn’t shared by LCD televisions. However, you don’t have to worry about burn-in if you have a new model of plasma TV or even if you have an older one and use it for normal television, DVD, and occasional computer use. Plasma screen televisions that suffer from burn-in are often found in corporate settings, where a single image, or a single channel with a news ticker, can burn into the screen.

Preventing Burn-In of Older Plasma Screen Televisions

Burn in will only occur in older plasma screen televisions that display the same image, or the same part of an image, for an extended period of time. Using the screen to display a single image, like a picture, for a long period of time will inevitably cause burn-in if your plasma TV is older than a couple of years. Using the screen as a computer display for long periods of time will cause the desktop of the computer to be burned in to the screen. Also, constantly viewing news programs that have stationary on screen objects (such as news tickers) will cause these objects to burn in to the screen. Most high-end plasma screen televisions have an option called “white wash” that will eliminate a burned in image. Using the white wash will shorten the life of your screen however so don’t abuse it.

Maintaining Your Plasma Screen Television

One of the beautiful things about plasma screen televisions is that they require little or no maintenance. There are no gases to recharge or bulbs to replace like it is the case with projectors or DLP TVs. All you have to do is insure that the television is placed within a safe environment and used properly. Make sure that it rests in a clean, cool, and dry space. When you install it make sure you leave enough room around it so air can flow and cool the plasma TV. Clean the screen regularly and don’t use chemical solutions for that unless the manufacturer recommends it. Don’t leave the television on when its not in use. If you follow these steps, no maintenance will be required and your TV will last you a very long time.

The Development of Flashlights

Flashlights were originally invented by Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1898, but he did not intend it to be a portable lighting device. Instead, Cowen meant his design to be sold as decorative lighting to go with potted plants. Cowen met with no commercial success and ultimately sold his company to Conrad Hubert.

Hubert hired an inventor to use Cowen’s design to create what is known today as the flashlight or electric torch. In order to begin marketing this new product, Hubert gave these them out to police officers in New York City to be used on the job. These flashlights were very different from the ones we use today. They could only be used in short bursts of light due to poor power elements and the inability to sustain current. In fact, this inability to keep up a beam of light is where the name flashlight actually came from!

The first flashlights used incandescent light bulbs, and many lights on the market today still use this type of lighting. One of the most popular brands of incandescent flashlights is Maglite, which provides a high-powered light beam with many of its products. Of course, there are always those who want more than is available, and it is a common pastime among flashlight enthusiasts to replace the light sources or other parts in these products with items that will produce a much more powerful light beam.

In addition to incandescent bulb, the modern age has brought us many more ways to create light. Probably the next most popular light source among flashlights these days is the LED light. LED stands for light-emitting diodes. The first LED flashlight was put on the market in 2001, and since LED lighting is much more efficient than incandescent, many manufacturers have been producing LED flashlights since then. Besides a longer battery life, LED lights also have the benefit of being tougher than regular incandescent lighting, making them an obvious choice for manufacturers that want to produce durable products. For people that need a flashlight that can take a beating, LED lighting is a great option, and can be found in brands such as Maglite, Surefire, and Pelican.

Another lighting source that has been developed in recent years is the high intensity discharge bulb, or HID. An example of this type of bulb can be found in the Surefire Hellfire Weaponlight. An HID bulb is very shock resistant and incredibly bright. In fact, the 3000 lumens generated by the Hellfire Weaponlight can light up targets several football fields away! HID lighting has not yet made a big impact on consumer flashlights, however, because they are expensive and require large power sources, making them less portable that the standard handheld flashlights.

In addition to standard, commercial flashlights such as Maglite, there is also an entire market dedicated to high-end flashlights. These manufacturers provide specialty lights that are made from special materials, are waterproof, and provide a brightness that far surpasses that of the standard flashlight. These products are designed with specific uses or collectability in mind, and can range in price from just over one hundred dollars to several hundred dollars! Some examples of high-end lights include Streamline’s HID Litebox, which is a search light with a candlepower of one million, and Surefire’s M6 Guardian, which is often used by police as a tactical light. These types of lights are often collected and traded by flashlight enthusiast worldwide. In fact, there is even an Annual Flashlight Convention, and several museums dedicated entirely to flashlights!

As flashlight technology developed over the years, inventive people came up with more and more ways to use this product, which means that more and more types of flashlights were created. For example, years ago, someone came up with the idea to attach lights to helmets to be used in mining, and more recently, tool companies started designing smaller lights that could be strapped over the head for hands-free working. In the past century, craftsmen have seen lights that hang, lights that can be attached to the wall or working space, and lights with flexible cylinders which can be wrapped around bars or other things. In the very beginning of flashlight development, the lights reflected the times, and some of them even looked just like lanterns. As you see how flashlights have changed over the years with culture and technology, you can only wonder what the next generation of lights will look like!

Self Confidence – 5 Barriers That Hinder Your Self Confidence

Confidence is one of the most important traits that you must acquire for success. It is the development of confidence that will help you overcome your fear of public speaking or giving presentations. Without confidence, you can not be as effective as you would like.

Here are 5 Barriers to developing your self confidence.

Barrier #1 Fear

The number one barrier to having an unstoppable confidence is fear. It might be a fear of failure, a fear rejection or even a fear of success. That’s right, you might be afraid of success and all the responsibilities that come because of success.

But most of these fears are imaginary. The only place these fears exist are in your mind. So stop and think about your fears. Are they real or are you afraid of something that hasn’t even happened yet? If it hasn’t happened yet don’t let it stop you from doing the things you need to do. Face your fear head on and take action.

Barrier #2 Worry

The next big barrier to a powerful confidence is worry. You might be worried about being perfect, or about what others think or that you might make a mistake. All of these are caused by spending too much time thinking about you. So, stop thinking about you and start thinking about others who need your message. Once you begin to focus on helping others you stop worrying about you.

Barrier #3 Procrastination

Procrastination will rob you of your confidence by keeping you from being at your best. Every time you leave something to be done at the last minute, it will never be as good as it could have been. If you are going to be at your best you need to determine your priorities and plan your tasks according to your priorities.

Barrier #4 Indecision

The ability to make decisions is a must for building confidence. Indecision in many situations can paralyze you and render you ineffective. You can change this by giving yourself deadlines to make a decision and sticking to it.

Remember you can always change your decision if new information warrants a change, but waiting to make a decision until everything is perfect will immobilize you. The perfect time will never come.

Barrier #5 Doubt

Doubt is probably the under lying problem with the other four barriers. Your fear, worry and indecisiveness comes from your doubt in your own abilities. Why should someone believe in you if you don’t?

Acquiring confidence will not be an easy task. It will require patience, work and effort to obtain the confidence needed for your success. But, if you have a strong desire and are willing to make sacrifices you can have unstoppable confidence.

Engine Cutaways: How, Why, Who

Engine cutaways can be used for many applications; at a trade show booth, in a training session for engineers and technicians, at a sales call with customers, in a lobby to show off your latest design or in an investor relations meeting to emphasize the uniqueness of your product. Of the many ways available to explain the benefits and advantages of your product line to people, a hands-on experience can be the most effective. There is a great deal of value in getting the actual product into the hands of potential clients or investors. Using a cutaway as an educational tool you can get a “real world” feel using the actual product but with the advantage that the functionality is visible instead of hidden inside. Diagrams, exploded views and models can all show the internals but many people cannot visualize how they fit together. Once they see the product intact and are able to touch it and explore it the advantages become more tangible.

HOW: The Cutaway Process

To create a cutaway your product is disassembled, the components that differentiate your product are then exposed by cutting away the housing that covers them and cutting into any components that you want to be shown. This allows your audience to view the internal structure of the product and see how the parts interrelate and interact. A cutaway can have multiple areas cutout. Then each individual piece is cut, smoothed and reassembled. Every part of the product is either painted or plated so that it shines. Color coded painting can be used to designate certain functions or pathways. The cutaway is then mounted on a stand or rolling basemount so that transporting and displaying it is easy. Finally a custom-fit, permanent shipping container can be constructed to protect it during transit. Your cutaway can even be made into a moving, working model which will show the product and its parts in action, if desired.

WHY: Functions of a Cutaway

Engine cutaways make great showpieces, training tools and trade show displays, and are very complicated to create requiring intricacy and precision to make them look effortless. Much of the beauty of an engine is in the details. In order to see all of these details, such as the pistons, crank shaft and valve train components as well as how they function together, a cutaway is an ideal solution. With a cutaway you can not only see how the individual parts function but you can see how they interrelate. From the exterior many engines may seem similar; but once the interior is exposed with a cutaway, you can see the unique attributes of the individual engine inside and its configuration. These are the important elements that can mean all the difference in power, performance and efficiency. Direct and Indirect Boat Engine Cooling With the Use of a Raw Water Pump

Anyone that’s new to boating could easily be forgiven for failing to understand how our boat’s engine is cooled. Unless your engine is air or keel cooled (more on this later) its cooling system is very likely to involve a ‘raw water pump’.

Consider this. If your boat’s engine is in an engine room or buried under your decks, how can it be cooled? Your car will have a radiator and a fan. The radiator is a heat exchanger that relies on cold air passing through it to cool the water inside it. The engine hidden away inside your boat does not have this luxury, so we have to cool the engine another way.

A simple way to achieve this is to take a standard water cooled engine and install a pump that takes water from the sea, lake or river and pushes that water straight through the engine and out again. This is basic ‘direct raw water cooling’. To add to the efficiency of this method some bright spark invented the water jacketed exhaust manifold. Instead of the used water being ejected immediately overboard, it is diverted through the exhausts water jacket and out through the exhaust. This not only massively improves the engine cooling but also removes the fire risk associated from an otherwise very hot exhaust. The big drawback to this method, particularly in sea water, is the build up of dried solids from the salt water. This can get so bad as to require an engine change. A further problem is the absence of antifreeze in winter.

A more elegant solution to cooling the engine is ‘indirect raw water cooling’. This method has a sealed water / antifreeze system, much like a car, but instead of a radiator it has a purpose made heat exchanger. This is a vessel with two chambers that are separated from each other by a suitably heat conductive material. Water from the engine is moved by the engines circulatory pump through one side of the heat exchanger, while a raw water pump pumps seawater through the other side of the heat exchanger. This removes heat from the freshwater circuit. The raw water then passes through the exhaust water jacket where it further cools the engine. The build up of solids can affect the heat exchanger over time, but many can be dismantled and cleaned, this is a much cheaper alternative to a possible engine replacement.

This method, used with a thermostat installed, gives us a sealed cooling system full of hot water that we can divert via a ‘calorifier’ to give us a free tank of hot water. A calorifier is simply a tank with metal coils inside that transports the hot engine water through the tank transferring heat on its way back to the engine. The engine cooling water never mixes directly with the water we are going to shower in!

The modern raw water pump is only a fraction of the size of the old inefficient pumps that used to be used, but they are very powerful. They contain a flexible impeller that ideally should be removed according to manufacturers recommended intervals, for careful checking and possible replacement.

Keel cooling, incidentally, is where the engine is cooled by a sealed system, but instead of using a raw water pump the hot engine water is diverted through metal pipes outside the boat where it is cooled and returned to the engine. This system can be affected badly if the boat grounds and the pipes are crushed or breached.

Yoga Arm Balance – The Crane (Bakasana)

I’ve always found it interesting that a specific asana can be loved by some people, while being despised by others. Bakasana, The Crane, is one of those postures which seems to split opinion.

I guess it’s only natural that we should be naturally drawn to postures which we are good at, or which are suited to our own specific strengths and abilities, while shying away from postures which our bodies are not so suited towards (which explains my aversion to upavistha konasana, Wide Legged Seated Forward Bend).

On the face of it that would explain my love of bakasana. To the uninitiated, the posture appears to rely heavily on upper body strength, but in fact, getting into and holding bakasana relies much more on focus and balance than on pure strength.

The name bakasana comes from the Sanskrit word baka meaning crane. It’s easy to see why the asana was given this name, as when seeing a yogi balanced gracefully on the hands with the body tucked in tight, one is reminded of a crane wading through a shallow pool.

To perform bakasana

1. After preliminary work to open the hips, and warm up the wrists, arms and shoulders, squat down from tadasana with the feet flat on the floor. Widen the knees and lean forward, so the torso comes between the inner thighs.

2. Bend the elbows, and place the hands flat on the floor, fingers spread, with the backs of the upper arms close to the armpits against the shins.

3. On an exhale, with the front of the body contracted, lift the heels and lean forward, taking the weight of the body onto the arms. Keeping tone in the abdomen, continue to lean forward and lift the tailbone until the feet lift off from the floor, and balance on the arms.

4. Straighten the arms as much as possible, gazing at a spot on the floor and slightly ahead, but do not lift the head so far as to compress the back of the neck.

5. The posture can be held for 10 – 60 seconds, then exhale and slowly lower the feet back towards the floor into a low squat. Bakasana rounds the spine, so a suitable counter pose would be an asana which takes the spine in the opposite direction, such as ustrasana (Camel).

Effects

Bakasana is of course strengthening to the upper body, particularly the arms and shoulders, and also the abdominal muscles. It massages the internal organs, and develops balance and focus. It’s also a great preliminary for handstand.

Contraindications

Wrist/arm/shoulder injuries, particularly carpel tunnel syndrome.

Pregnancy

Variations

A great variation is the side crow, parsva bakasana, which strangely many find easier than the regular pose. The asana can also be used in a sequence to/from a tripod headstand, or jumping from this posture back to plank or from downward facing dog.
