Six Steps For Developing a Strategic Communication Plan to Target Internal & External Stakeholders

Like all functional areas of a company, the Communication Department plays a key role in helping an organization reach its objectives. It makes an organization understandable; it emphasizes its differences; it prioritizes messages for its key audiences. Ultimately, Communications works to package and position an organization – to make sure its messages are clear, coherent and consistent only then, can stakeholders be most supportive.

This packaging and positioning takes the form of a Strategic Communication Plan. Whether it’s focused on the organization in its entirety or its products or services, it addresses two important areas: Internal Communication and External Communication. Internal communication is concerned with creating and promoting a positive, productive workforce. External communication is concerned with the messages directed to outside audiences, with a goal of increasing visibility, enhancing reputation, and influencing perception.

Following is a six-step process for developing such a plan. Every organization, no matter its size, needs to go through these steps.

1. Understand the Challenge.

Don’t guess. It’s important to start by taking the time to determine your mission âEURo the real communication concerns and opportunities for improvement. Are stakeholders confused and can communication clarify the mystery? Have internal or external audiences been neglected? Is this the year to increase awareness and ramp up media relations efforts?

2. Conduct a Communication Audit.

If objective research isn’t done, the plan won’t be customer focused and will tend to be based on past experience, historical knowledge, or hearsay. Look at existing communication tools and messages being sent. Talk with folks inside and outside your organization about their perception of the organization. Consider competitors. Who does it make sense to emulate?

3. Package and Position.

Formalize your messaging. How will you talk about your organization so your internal and external audiences will understand what you do? What are the differential advantages you need to accentuate? Make sure you create official corporate communication tools to ensure consistency, e.g., a Brand Positioning Document, Key Messages and an Elevator Pitch.

4. Map the Audiences.

Determine your audiences that need to be reached and lay out a plan to connect with them. Think about existing channels of communication and current messages. Leverage what’s already in place.

The objective of a Communications Department isn’t necessarily to create new communication tools or establish new channels, but rather to make communications more effective.

5. Plan for Improvement.

Determine how to measure success. What quantitative and qualitative data will demonstrate that your communication strategy is on track? Be sure to have a consistent, sustainable process for connecting with your audiences, measure it, and don’t forget to link your results to your initial communication plan objectives.

6. Execute the Plan.

Create an implementation plan, work it, and stick with it! It’s as simple and difficult as that.

An important point to remember throughout the development of your plan is that it’s not necessary to focus on all your stakeholder groups at once. The best strategy is to target those that will have the most immediate and positive impact on your business, and those that are a source of specific concern.

For example: Do your employees have a thorough understanding of your mission so they can work productively toward your goal? Do your customers have sufficient information about your products or services so they know when to call? Do your media outlets understand your business enough to use your executives as subject matter experts? Is there potential for your company to have a negative impact on the community?

The last thing you want to do is develop and commit to a process only to realize that it can’t be sustained because of limited company resources.

Clearly your strategic communication plan will become a useful and powerful tool. It will focus your stakeholders on what’s truly important in the eyes of your organization and will create reality, simply by putting words on paper and sharing information consistently and predictably. Your plan will be an important catalyst for change and will ultimately lead to organizational development, enhanced productivity, greater employee satisfaction, and improved performance.

Wedding Cakes – How Traditional Tastes and Customs Have Changed

For centuries, cakes have been one of the main ingredients of a wedding celebration. However, the traditional wedding cake has not always been the rich variety, heavy with fruit, like the ones now generally favoured. In years gone by it was a simple confection, made from just flour, salt and water. Early British cakes were round and flat, and later began to contain fruit and nuts to symbolise fertility.

In Roman times, the cake was even shared during the actual ceremony, although in those days it was more akin to a thin loaf of bread. At the close of the ceremony it was broken or crumbled over the bride’s head to symbolise fertility and guests scrambled to gather crumbs as good luck charms. In Fiji the cake is still incorporated within the ceremony today.

Symbolism is an important element of British wedding celebrations and the actual cutting of the cake is one of the traditional rituals. By joining hands to make that first cut together, the couple are symbolising the sharing of their future. An old Yorkshire custom was to take a plate of wedding cake and throw it out of the window as the bride was making her way to her parents’ home after the ceremony. The couple’s future happiness depended on whether the plate broke or remained intact.

The size of the cake has grown over the centuries. During the Middle Ages the tradition was for the happy couple to kiss over the top of a pile of small cakes. Eventually, a baker came up with the idea of clustering all these together and covering them with icing, setting the trend for the tiered wedding cakes we know today. The shape of today’s three-tiered cake is said to have been based on the spire of Saint Bride’s Church in London. The top tier is often kept by the couple for their first child’s christening.

As well as throwing a plate out of the window, there was once the custom of placing a ring inside the wedding cake. Whichever guest found the ring in their slice of cake was guaranteed to be happy for the following year. Although these customs have become outdated and just become traditions of the past, some old wives’ tales still remain. For instance, if an unmarried guest places a piece of the wedding cake beneath their pillow they are said to help their chances of finding a partner. Similarly, if a bridesmaid does this, she is said to dream of her future husband.

Ford Windsor Transit Autosleeper: A Product Review of the Ford Windsor

If you want a luxury recreational vehicle or motorhome, the Ford Windsor Autosleeper may be a choice for you. This is a spacious RV that many families will find acceptable. Its interiors are inspired by Italian design and its engine is manufactured by one of the most trusted auto companies in the world: Ford.

The kitchen has the complete essentials of what one would need, with a gas stove equipped with three burners and a hotplate. It has a grill and oven and 77-liter fridge and a full-width freezer. Of course, there is a stainless sink and drainer completely equipped with dish racks, cutlery drawer, and waste bins.

There are also basic design features such as a shower mat, soap dispenser, and toothbrush holder.

Priced at $57, 000 USD, the Ford Windsor Transit 2.4 TDCI Autosleeper GB is not a good buy. There are many other RVs for sale at half the price with almost the same amenities like the Sterling Elite Searcher 2005. Personally, I would rate this a 3-star for meeting basic requirement of elegance.

An Introduction to Rice Cookers

Modern technology has afforded us a somewhat endless range of items geared toward making out lives easier. Indeed, almost every variety of food now has a specially designed preparation tool in order to make the process as simple as possible. In this instance we are looking at rice cookers which are, as the name may well suggest, items of kitchen or catering hardware specifically developed for the cooking of rice.

While such an item may seem something of an unnecessary or rather extravagant alternative to conventional rice cooking methods, they have become an integral and standard feature of millions of homes and industry environments across the world where they are held with a rather high level of reverence.

Although the term seems to suggest just a single entity for the job of cooking rice, there are in fact a wide variety of implements available in the way of pots, pans, steamers, containers designed for microwave use and self-contained appliances powered by gas or electric. The vast majority of rice cookers found in homes for private use these days tend to be the electric rice cookers, which are both incredibly easy to use and very affordable.

Commercial and industrial kitchens on the other hand are much more likely to favor large electric or gas cookers in the form of huge scale “rice boilers” and also fully automated options which handle every stage of the cooking process from initially washing the rice to finalizing and completing the cooking and preparation process. Although these appliances in such large-scale and technologically advanced forms are a truly modern creation, the concept of dedicated “rc” dates as far back at 1250 BC in the form of basic, ceramic examples.

The process of cooking rice has long been a process which demands a certain level of care and attention in order to ensure rice is properly cooked without the resulting product being too hard or soft. Automatic rice cookers have afforded the chef and home-cook alike a whole new world of convenience by controlling both temperature and timing with little to no input from the person using the device. Furthermore, as the units are usually freestanding as self-contained, they do not utilise a stove burner, freeing up resources for other use.

Despite what many people may think, the use of a specially designated rice cooker does not necessarily speed up the cooking process, but rather provide an exceptional level of convenience requiring little more than the correct measurements of rice and water adding, followed by the press of a button. Subsequently, the machine takes over and requires no further attention whatsoever to produce perfect results.

Safety is an issue the modern rice cooker also covers reassuringly well, usually by featuring an insulated casing and external walls which remain cool to the touch regardless of the current stage of cooking. As such, the best rice cookers are able to maintain a temperature which can keep cooked rice warm for an extended period without emitting a great deal of heat or potentially posing a burn hazard.

Trade Secrets for Replacing Double Glazing Glass in PVC Windows

Most of the customers that I visit think that by having a broken or misted double glazed unit (glass) the whole frame needs to be replaced. Unless the frame itself has been damaged in a burglary or by accident the glass can be replaced without fitting a new frame.

Identifying the Glazing System:

The first thing to do is identify if the frame is externally or internally beaded. This is done by looking at the beads where they meet the inside edge of the window frame and identifying if there is a join there. Most new windows are internally glazed.

Removing the beads on internally beaded windows:

Insert a stiff putty knife into the join between the bead and the frame at the middle of the longest bead. You may need to push or tap the putty knife to separate the bead from the frame. Remove all of the beads one by one and the double glazed unit should be free to be removed and replaced.

Removing the Beads on Externally Beaded Windows:

There are a few different glazing systems on externally glazed windows. The most common one is the internal gasket or back wedge system. The rubber gasket on the inside of the window needs to be taken out to enable the external beads to be removed. To do this, take a stiff putty knife and press it into the rubber on the inside of the window and flick it out. Then follow the instructions for removing the beads above. Take note of which way the gasket comes out.

The next most common external glazing system is double sided security tape. The tape is put on to the window frame during manufacture and the double glazed unit is then pressed onto it, allowing the external beads to be clipped into place. Use a Stanley knife / Box cutter to cut the tape. Hold the knife flat to the glass to avoid slicing into the frame. Cut all round the taped area and you should be able to get the putty knife in and slowly lever the glass unit out. Once the glass has been taken out you can then get a scraper and remove all the old tape from the window frame, taking care not to damage the frame. Then follow the instructions for removing the beads above.

The third and least common type of glazing system is the sort that has no gasket or tape on the inside of the window. The beads on this type of frame can be removed from the outside with a putty knife. One word of caution With this type of frame, and some of the others. Some Externally glazed frames have Glass Locks fitted to them. Glass Locks are right angle pieces of metal that are inserted into special holder clips attached to the frame. If you remove the beads and see these metal clips, call a glazier as these clips can be very difficult to remove without the proper tools.

Measuring the Double Glazed Unit:

After removing the Double Glazed Unit it is advisable to take it to your local Glass Merchant for them measure it and check for any special coatings that the glass may have on it. If the Double Glazed Unit was sitting on plastic packers when you removed it, take them with you and ask the Glass Merchant if they are the correct packers for the job, if not, get the correct packers. This is very important as the cause of most Double Glazed Unit Breakdowns (misty / condensation between glass) is that they have not been fitted on the correct packers. If your window is glazed on security tape you will need to buy some new double sided security tape.

Re-Fitting an Internally Glazed Double Glazed Unit:

Make sure the unit is square in the frame and you have it sitting on your two packers. Fit the two shortest beads first by tapping the in with a nylon mallet. Then fit the two longest beads in the same way. You may need to push one end of the bead into position and bend the bead to get the other end in.

Re-Fitting an Externally Glazed Double Glazed Unit:

Back gasket system – Fit the glass and beads as described above and then push the rubber gasket back into the frame on the inside of the window. If the rubbers have shrunk you can gently stretch then out and re-fit them with a small blob of superglue in each corner to stop them from shrinking back again.

Security tape system – Fit the new tape to your window frame, taking care to keep it flush with the frame edge. Remove the covering and Spray the tape with window cleaner. This will allow you to move and align the Double Glazed Unit. The window cleaner will evaporate in a couple of hours leaving you with a Double Glazed Unit that can only be removed by cutting it out from the inside. Fit the glass and beads as described above.

One word of caution: Some Externally glazed frames have Glass Locks fitted to them. Glass Locks are right angle pieces of metal that are inserted into special holder clips attached to the frame. If you remove the beads and see these metal clips, call a glazier as these clips can be very difficult to remove without the proper tools.

If you are not sure which system you have or are not confident enough to proceed with the job, call a glazier. It will be cheaper in the long run to get someone who knows what they are doing than destroying your windows.

Benefits of Calisthenics for Speed Training

Calisthenics Benefits for Speed Training Explained

Calisthenics are perfect for getting in proper shape for running and for gaining the break-neck speed you need to win trophies and make headlines. But some runners and speed training athletes feel that calisthenics aren’t necessary for getting faster. And some are under the misconception that calisthenics training actually makes you slower. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The following calisthenics benefits for speed training should clear the matter up nicely.

Introduces Variety Into Your Training

One of the best benefits of engaging in calisthenics is the fact that you are getting tons of variety in your speed training workout. When you incorporate knee raises, pushups, crunches and planks with very few rests in between sets, you are conditioning your body to be as fast as possible. Remember to keep pushing yourself and to keep trying out different exercises so that you can condition your body even more.

Improves Coordination

When you speak of calisthenics benefits for speed training, you can’t leave out coordination. Coordination plays a huge role when it comes to how fast you are, and if your coordination is off just a little bit you won’t be able to increase your turnover rate and other runners will eventually blow right past you. But if you engage in various calisthenics a few times per week, you’ll become much more coordinated and your speed will increase as a result.

You’ll Get Stronger

One of the most obvious calisthenics benefits for speed training include the fact that you will be getting stronger with each session. Of course you’ll need to make sure you’re getting plenty of fuel in the form of healthy foods and beverages and that you’re getting plenty of rest, but if you do calisthenics in the form of pushups and leg raises and all the other exercises you tend to do when you’re training, you will get stronger and that will increase your power and, ultimately, your speed.

What Does It All Mean?

Hopefully by how you are convinced that you need calisthenics in your training regimen if you want to develop the kind of speed that makes others, including college scouts, take notice. You don’t want to be the slowest person on the field and you certainly don’t want to be second place. You want to win, and that’s why you train every chance you get, using all the tools you’ve been taught in order to carry you towards your winning goals. But if you don’t include calisthenics with the rest of your tools, you will eventually reach your glass ceiling and that’s where you’ll stay. So instead, realize the calisthenics benefits for speed training and train the way the experts do. Calisthenics are not ‘old-school’ or outdated, and they certainly won’t make you any slower. Instead, they’ll make you more coordinated, stronger and faster than ever. If you don’t believe it, try incorporating calisthenics into your normal routine and you’ll reach any speed-training goals you reach for yourself, guaranteed.

Credit Repair Business Plan

Here’s the executive summary of a Credit Repair Business Plan:

  • a description of your company, including your products and/or services
  • your mission statement
  • your business’s management
  • the market and your customer
  • marketing and sales
  • your competition
  • your business’s operations
  • financial projections and plans

For someone looking for a credit repair business plan, a simple description might be “Ace Credit restoration provides credit restoration services to help consumers attain good credit and therefore have more attractive financing options. The company provides credit repair on a fee-for-service model charging $800 to $2000 per client and reaches new clients via relationships by credit-dependent professionals (real estate, car dealers, etc.), financial professionals (tax, insurance, financal planners), consumer direct marketing (internet, radio, tv, postcards), and past-client referral cultivation.

Any business plan should then talk about management, which refers to your experience. If you have experience managing a team, attention to detail, and/or financial experience, this is relevant and should be included.

When writing about your client, the consumer, you’ll find there are about 70 to 80 million americans with bad credit, many millions of whom will need to finance a home or car or other purchase and will therefore be interested in purchasing credit repair services. While some people do attempt credit repair on their own, credit is becoming increasingly complex and important. Fewer people succeed or event attempt it, and like dealing with plumbing or auto repairs, most are willing to pay a professional to get it done right.

Next, you should include a specific marketing breakdown. We have found that at first, referral relationships are a great place to start. By offering “credit repair seminars” or “lunch and learn” events to local real estate agents or car dealers, you can quickly position yourself as an expert, develop referral sources, and help them sell more homes or cars. As your business grows, you’ll want to branch out into mass media, internet marketing to increase your visibility and scale up your operations.

The next section generally will cover competition, which of course varies by market. Currently, the credit repair business is still open and largely driven on referrals at time of need, meaning people often get their credit restored when preparing to buy a home or car, or after being declined for some type of financing (i.e. a credit card at better terms than they have presently). Longer term, the internet is a massive source of business that still has substantial opportunity. One still largely untapped area needing someone to execute their credit repair business plan is in the area of social marketing (i.e. Facebook) and joint ventures with point-of-need media i.e. a referral relationship with leading real estate websites, car dealer websites, etc. who depend on attractive financing.

Next, your plan should cover operations. You can run a credit repair home based business, or you can use office space. One under-used idea is renting a desk inside a busy real estate office. This can provide more than just a professional meeting place, but the proximity of agents who depend on their clients having good financing will virtually guarantee some clients are delivered to you. This can also help embed your credit repair business into the local ecosystem of potential referring businesses such as mortgage, insurance, and financial professionals. Most real estate offices would be open to renting a desk or office within or nearby the facility. Another option for your credit repair business plan is to run a home based credit repair business, but have a set schedule at local real estate offices or car dealers to review any new files and answer questions the agents or dealers might have.

Financial projections and plans in your credit repair business plan should address startup costs and revenue, and possibly even exit such as sale of the company. Since there are systems that provide more than just software, but complete turn-key systems (similar to a franchise) including training to make you the expert, unlimited paralegal support, annual conferences, marketing support, legal support, and much more you should investigate your options.

Obviously success varies by talent, work, resources and abilities with any business opportunity. That said, we know of affiliates who have taken their credit repair business plan and executed on that plan, grossing over $100,000 per month. If you like the idea of being your own boss and earning an executive level income, we encourage you to take look at your business plan as just the first step an an exciting new venture.

Patio Cushions – Easy To Dry, Easy To Love

Ahhh, the springtime joy of plopping down on a cold, wet patio cushion…is a feeling I can do without. But, what makes the best, quickest drying cushion?

Patio cushions are not all made to dry quickly, nor do they need to be. If you have a wicker bench on a deep porch, chances are it will see little rain. But, if your furniture sits out in the sun, it also sits in the rain. Therefore, you need a quick-drying seat.

Patio cushions come in natural and synthetic fabrics. Most are treated with a water-resistant coating kind of like an industrial strength Scotch-guard®. In most cases, this means the water tends to roll right off of well-treated fabric, especially if it is at a slight angle.

Regardless of how well the water rolls off of it, some fabrics are more prone to mildew. Mildew can form on cushions from repeatedly dewy nights and mornings. So, if you live in a humid climate, you should consider a synthetic fabric over natural fabric. Natural fabric is more prone to mildew. Another reason many recommend synthetic over natural fabric is for fade-resistance. Many synthetic fabrics are formed with the color in the strands before they are spun out and are still in liquid form. This allows for almost 100% color saturation. Most quality synthetic fabric has a three-to-five year color-fade guarantee.

The filling of your cushions also make a difference in how quickly it dries. Foam takes forever, some fillings take slightly less time than that, and some seem to dry as soon as you want to sit in them. Many companies just list their filling as 100% polyester or 100% acrylic. Compressed polyfill is said to dry quicker than loose fill. If in doubt, unzip the zipper and check the filling out. Compressed polyfill should look dense and fibrous, similar to what fiberglass insulation looks like.

Cleaning your patio cushions should consist of a good hosing off two or three times a season, unless you encounter a stain. If you do, refer closely to the manufacturer’s cleaning directions. Any cleaning agents will lessen your cushions’ water resistance. The manufacturer’s directions should also explain how to restore the water resistance after cleaning.

To keep your patio cushions in their best shape, here are a few words of advice.

Clean them by spraying them off well with the garden hose and letting them dry completely at least twice a year.

Clean them when you bring them out of storage and before you put them into storage.

Store them in a breathable container that still protects them from dust. Some of the companies that make custom and replacement cushions might make a custom storage bag for you. Ask if they will consider it before you place your order and use it as a negotiating point if possible.

Finally, to dry your cushions as quick as possible make sure they are getting airflow on all sides. If they are on a wicker or open-metal design seat, they will get air on all sides. If your patio cushions are on a wooden seat, I would suggest tilting them on edge, or hanging them up by their ties. If you are really desperate for a dry seat, use a hair dryer on low or medium heat with high fan speed. Move it steadily over the seat, side to side, from top to bottom.

Sometimes, it is difficult to choose a device that would be ideal for both work and entertainment. But the option is still there. In order to solve this issue, many manufacturers made massive efforts and have launched the 2-in-1 notebooks. The new released HIPO i101 is such an innovative laptop/tablet hybrid that combines the best bits of both in one versatile device. It perfectly decides the issue of choice.

HIPO i101 is an Intel Baytrail-T (Quad-core) Z3735F powered 2-in-1 notebook with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. It has 2GB DDR3L of RAM and runs the operating system version of Windows 10 on a 32GB eMMC. In addition, it gets a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 IPS screen, which has a 16:10 aspect ratio.

How to Replace Your Ford Expedition Tail Light

The Ford Expedition is a full size SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) which was built by Ford Motor Company and introduced in the market in 1997 as a replacement to the earlier model – Ford Bronco. The Ford Expedition is Ford’s flagship SUV. The current third generation models of these vehicles are produced in Kentucky from its earlier base at Michigan.

The Ford Expedition, just like any other vehicles, need proper maintenance in order to realize its full capacity.

Some of the most important parts that need apposite care include the exterior and the rare lights of the vehicle. Ford Expedition is therefore no exception to this maintenance and care. Tail lights (Rear lights) of Ford Expedition are of outmost importance and every driver of the vehicle should make sure they function all properly all the time.

Replacing the tail lights in Ford Expedition is often regarded as a tasking job and many a times, people seek expertise assistance. However, this can be made simple by following the below simple guide. With practice, it is likely that one can become an expert in tail light replacement on all Ford Expedition vehicles.

The tail light is located in the same place of the vehicle rear, one just below the other in the Ford Expedition. The only tools required here are either a T – 20 torx or a 9/32 socket. The first step is to open the entire lift gate, not just the glass to expose the lamp assemblies. There, you will see two or even three Phillip screws holding the tail lamp/lens assembly in place. Unscrew them and set them aside.

Carefully pop the lens off and to the light. There are normally three “push ins” that hold the lens. It may feel like more bolts, but if you pull evenly and diagonally away from the vehicle, they will pop out just fine. There are normally two light bulbs in the assembly on all Ford Expedition.

The top one is the brake light/ turn signal bulb and the other one is the back-up bulb. Normally, there are two groups of wires once you get the light out. These wires are the light bubs and they come out by turning counter-clockwise and then pulling up on them. Get rid of all the remnants of the lens out.

Once the area is clean, pop in the bulb in the new lens and turns it clockwise to snap it into place. Secure the two screws which had been set aside. The Ford Expedition auto parts stores recommend a 4157LL rather than the Sylvania 4157K and this works out perfectly.

This process should take you at least ten minutes and you are ready to bring back your ford Expeditions to the road. It is always advisable to replace the tail lamps as soon as they get broken. This will of course avoid facing the wrath of law enforcers as well as for safety purposes. This process should therefore be considered easy to learn by every Ford Expeditions driver.

What Equipment Do I Need To Open A Salon Or Barber Shop?

Opening a barbershop or even a salon can be a challenging job. There are many rules and regulations governing the industry usually set by the state boards and by the city codes and ordinances. Many cities have barbering educators who are licensed to teach in their shop or school and who have a wealth of knowledge of what’s required in your city to be able to run a violation free shop. They typically love the business and love talking about it. If you can seek out their support you will have an advantage in getting started.

Now lets talk about learning the old fashion way and researching it yourself by reading the rules and regulations. The best sources for finding information regarding specific requirements is from your State Boards or Regulatory Commission. But you still have to deal with your city or town building and occupancy codes to get a “C of O” approval (Certificate of Occupancy). We have compiled an alphabetical list by States and their web addresses related to the regulation of barbering and cosmetology. Remember each state requires different things but some important safety items have been a Sharps Container (used razor blade disposal), certificates / licenses displayed and have on file a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for every chemical you use.

Lets start with the Basics or MUST have items:

· A shampoo sink / chair combo with hot and cold running water

· A styling chair, all purpose chair or barber chair, one per person

· One hand held or hood dryer with or without the chair

· One work station (wall mount, stationary), per person

· A disinfectant container with disinfectant or sterilizing solution

· Seating accommodations in reception area

· Cabinet for clean towels and supplies

· A receptacle for used towels

· Reception Desk

· Floor Mats

· Child Booster Seat

The best places to get the information you need on the equipment requirements for a Salon or Barbershop is your local Chamber of Commerce and your state board.

Differences Between Extractor Fans

These days when you put in a new bathroom, toilet, utility room or kitchen, building regulations say that you need to install an extractor fan. But what type of extractor fan should you buy from the thousands on offer?

There are 3 main “families” of fans to choose from: axial, centrifugal and inline fans. Axial fans are the most common type of extractor fan that you see. They are ideally suited to being placed on a wall and ducted straight outside. This means you cut a hole in a wall, fit the fan, and the air goes straight out the back and outside. Axial fans are therefore best suited to installation on walls.

Centrifugal fans are generally used where you need to duct the fan over long distances, often up to 50 metres. They work by turning the air through a 90° bend within the fan itself, which increases the air pressure and thus the power of the fan. As a result, centrifugal fans are normally more powerful than axial fans, but also noisier. As well as being capable of being ducted over longer distances, they can also cope with bends in the ducting. Centrifugal fans are suited to installation on walls and ceilings.

Inline fans can be either axial or centrifugal, but are not installed on walls or ceilings, but in the void or loft space above a ceiling. In general they are centrifugal. They are nearly always more powerful than wall or ceiling fans, and again are very good at ducting over long distances and duct runs with bends.

Some fans can be installed in windows, but you generally need to buy a window kit specific to that fan, and there aren’t many that are made, so make sure before you buy that the fan can be installed in a window! Window fans are becoming less and less common…as all glass is now double glazed, cutting a hole in the glass is a harder job than it used to be, and once the hole is cut, it needs to be sealed very carefully or condensation will get between the panes.

Also, make sure you get the correct size and extraction rate for the room you are renovating. For toilets the minimum rate required is 6 litres a second, for bathrooms it’s 15 litres a second, for utility rooms it’s 30, and for kitchens it’s 60, unless it is adjacent to the hob, in which case it’s 30.

As a rough guide, all bathroom and toilet fans are 4 inch, whereas utility and kitchen fans are 6 inch.

Chiaroscuro – A Dark and Light Blend

Chiaroscuro – The Concept

Chiaroscuro is a unique art form in which the use of light symbolizes various objects and gives them a three-dimensional feel. Chiaroscuro, an Italian term for light & dark, gives an edge to drawing, painting, and printmaking, done on a two-dimensional canvas.

The History

To trace the history, in 5th century BC, ‘Shadow-Painting’ was evidenced in Greece. The art form managed to survive through the Byzantine Empire (4th century-1453). Finally, Chiaroscuro emerged during the Renaissance Era (14th-16th centuries) in Italy and Flanders. Here, the artists used colored paper and pastel colors. The concept of Illuminated Manuscripts of the Late Roman Imperial Era (3rd century AD) was the key inspiration. In 1508, Chiaroscuro woodcuts evolved in Germany. First art works of the style were made in Italy. By the sixteenth century, Compositional Chiaroscuro gained momentum. It was heavily used in Mannerist and Baroque art works. Dramatic Chiaroscuro or Tenebrism was witnessed in 17th & 18th centuries, mainly in Spain and Italy. The art style touched Romanticism as well in the 19th century.

The Details

Typical Chiaroscuro works involve the use of bold strokes in striking contrasts. The movement usually is from light to dark. This way, the image looks deep and meaningful. The transition, though not strong, is enough to capture the imagination of the human mind. It is generally used to depict the human body where this light dark effect is found very useful. The exquisite use of shades to depict the various parts of the human body is the most renowned aspect of Chiaroscuro.

The Types:

o Pencil Shading – A simple form of Chiaroscuro, which most people have used in their lives at some moment, is ‘shading.’ Here, the same contrast effect is wonderfully captured with the help of pencil strokes.

o Chiaroscuro Woodcut – These are woodcut blocks, used with different colored inks.

o Chiaroscuro Drawing – Here, dark mediums are used to draw on colored papers. The highlights are done in white.

o Printmaking Techniques – Washes, Stippling or Dotting, and Surface Tone

o Other Fields – Apart from paintings, Chiaroscuro concepts are also used in cinema, photography, and prints, imparting a completely new dimension to the concept.

The Artists

The famous Greek painter and sculptor Apollodoros (430-400 BC) first used Chiaroscuro, as ‘Shadow-Painting,’ way back in the 5th century B.C. Other famous Chiaroscuro artists from Italy include Ugo da Carpi (1455-1523), Giovanni Baglione (1566-1643), and Caravaggio (1573-1610). Undoubtedly, Caravaggio was the most famous of them all. His followers, who made their own mark in the field, included Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640), Gerard van Honthorst (Italian, 1592-1656), Dirck van Baburen (Dutch, 1595-1624), and Jacob Jordaens (Flemish, 1593-1678). Even the famous painter Rembrandt was known to use the basic concepts of Chiaroscuro by painting images using candle light and its effects as a theme.

The Art Works

Among innumerable Chiaroscuro stunners, few of the most impressive and classical ones are ‘Annunciation’ (1545-46) by Domenico Beccafumi (1486-1551), ‘Crucifixion of St. Peter’ (1600) by Caravaggio, The Flight to Egypt’ (1609) by Adam Elsheimer (German, 1578-1610), ‘Nativity’ by Gerard van Honthorst, ‘Mary Magdalene’ by Georges de La Tour (French, 1593-1652), and ‘St. Peter in Prison’ (1631) by Rembrandt (Dutch 1606-69).
