Tremec TKO Transmissions Part 1 – TKO-500 and TKO-600 Features and Background

Tremec is an OE transmission supplier that manufactures manual transmissions for Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Aston Martin, TVR, and many different medium and heavy duty truck applications. Their TKO is a high strength 5-speed overdrive manual transmission that was originally designed to be retrofitted into Mustang Fox body cars to replace the weaker T5, but will also bolt up to the standard Ford four speed passenger car bellhousing. When Tremec realized that enthusiasts were adapting it for GM applications, they decided to make it a little easier for folks (and capitalize on a huge opportunity, too) by producing a GM version of the TKO.

The GM version will bolt directly up to almost any standard Chevrolet/Buick/Olds/Pontiac passenger car four-speed bellhousing. Though only Ford and GM versions of the TKO are available, Mopar enthusiasts can get all the custom parts they need to adapt a Ford version TKO to virtually any Mopar V8 engine. The TKO has never been OE equipment in any production car, although its great-grandpa, the Tremec TR-3550 was in a limited-production Ford Mustang Cobra in the mid 1990s. The TKO is purely an aftermarket transmission designed for high-performance cars.

There are three basic models available, the TKO-500 and two variations of the TKO-600. The wide-ratio TKO-500 is rated for a continuous 500 lb.-ft. of torque, and offers a deep 3.27:1 first gear ratio and a 0.68:1 overdrive ratio in fifth gear. The close-ratio TKO-600 is rated for a continuous 600 lb.-ft. of torque, and has a 2.87:1 first gear and either a 0.82:1 overdrive or a 0.64:1 overdrive ratio in fifth gear. The rated torque capacities are said to be quite conservative, as there are a significant number of cars in the field with engines that exceed the torque rating by a large margin, and failures are rare.

The TKO uses a three-rail internal shift mechanism, eliminating any external linkage and the problems that go with it. The short throw billet aluminum shifter can be removed, flipped 180 degrees, and then reinstalled to provide an additional shift position. Optional custom shifters are available in several different configurations to mimic the shift positions in various musclecars. The TKO utilizes cast iron shift forks, a one-piece counter shaft, and tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and counter shafts for added strength.

Every TKO transmission provides both mechanical and electronic speedometer outputs. The mechanical output is a Ford design, but you can get hybrid speedometer cables for GM or Mopar applications. They also feature a reverse light switch and a neutral safety switch that can be wired into your vehicle’s existing harness. The transmission has an internal reverse lockout feature that prevents you from accidentally going from fifth gear into reverse. You have to go into the center of the “Neutral” gate before it will allow you to shift into reverse.

The Tremec TKO is an excellent choice for the musclecar or street rod owner that enjoys rowing his own gears and wants to drive his car to distant car shows or other events. I have one in my 1967 Pontiac Firebird and have driven a number of other cars with TKO transmissions installed. The overdrive makes a huge difference on the highway, and there aren’t many other transmission choices out there with overdrive that will stand up to the kind of power that the TKO can take. None of the other overdrive transmissions available at this time offer as much versatility as the Tremec TKO.

The Best Hair Replacement for Men

Choosing the right type of hair replacement procedure depends on the severity of the baldness that an individual is experiencing. How do you know if you are qualified for hair replacement?

Although it’s true that hair replacement surgery can improve appearance and boost self-esteem, there are cases in which the results of the surgery don’t measure up to the expected results. The smart thing to do before undergoing hair replacement surgery is to discuss all your expectations with your doctor. Don’t be afraid to offer suggestions on how you want your hair to look. Remember that your appearance will be greatly affected by your new hair – they say that the hair is a person’s crowning glory. so make sure that it will really enhance your looks before committing to a surgical procedure.

Another important thing to understand about hair replacement procedures is the need for an existing area of thick, healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head since these areas will serve as the donor areas for the hair replacement. It’s these areas from which the “donations” will be taken, and the outcome of your hair replacement procedure will depend on things like hair color and texture.

In the cases of men who suffer from a thin frontal hairline while also being bald on the crown, surgeons will sometimes use multiple hair replacement techniques in order to get better results.

Most men, after reviewing various hair replacement procedures, opt for hair transplantation. It’s important to understand what the process of hair transplantation entails to understand why it’s preferred by most men.

Hair transplantation involves moving small sections of scalp where hair still grows from the donor area of the head to the bald or thinning area, usually at the top of the scalp. This procedure also includes modern techniques in hair grafting which are performed by expert physicians in most hospitals or clinics.

Moreover, in hair transplantation no new hair is added, only existing hair and skin that is relocated to some bald or thinning areas of the head. The skin grafts used for this type of procedure vary in size and in shape. There are actually five types of skin grafts used in hair transplantation: punch grafts, mini-grafts, micro-grafts, slit grafts and strip grafts.

Hair transplantation is not a quick hair restoration procedure, as it involves several surgical sessions before an entire bald area is transplanted with skin grafts. Aside from that, a recovery time is required in between sessions – for some major cases of baldness it can take years before you’ll get to see the final results of the series of transplants that you have undergone.

Even though hair transplantation takes a much longer time to complete, you can be sure of the quality of the results. This is probably the reason why most men prefer this procedure.

George Wallace: An Enigma

People who saw George Wallace as a racist populist may have missed the complexity hiding behind a facade. The man had many faces.

George loved the limelight, so he was compelled to continuously run for office, aiming for the top: first, to be Alabama’s governor; next, to be the United States president. But holding office wasn’t as important as winning it. George thrived on the thrill of the chase, even when it took him away from his duties as governor. He also needed power, so much so that he had his terminally ill wife Lurleen replace him when he was no longer eligible to serve as Alabama’s governor.

Underneath the shield of simplicity was a unique man with the ability to adapt to any situation and make it work to his advantage. He was so adept at being “the boy next door”, people did not look beyond that. When he dealt with bureaucrats, however, his personality changed and he acted in a manner suitable to the occasion.

He served in difficult, controversial times. Like other politicians of his ilk in the Civil Rights era, he did what was politically expedient, passionately attempting to hold onto norms of the past, especially white supremacy. Much was done under the guise of States Rights. He knew his infamous “stand in the schoolhouse door” was futile, but he kept his campaign promise made in a speech when he said, “I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever.” Later, he claimed the word “segregation” was a misnomer; he’d intended to say “States Rights” in all three places. Then, he changed with the times and made amends by apologizing to relatives of four children who were victims of a bombing at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in 1963.

A determined man, being shot in an attempted assassination did not stop him from continuing to pursue his goals. His passion endured, and he didn’t waver after what he called his “accident.” His mantra was “Keep on keeping on,” even though being confined to a wheelchair meant he could no longer stand up for Alabama. He had supporters and opponents. People who loved him were fiercely loyal, and those who didn’t constantly harped on his faults.

Although George had three wives, he chose to be buried beside his first one, Lurleen. Their bodies rest in the Circle of Life Section of Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery. Both past governors are still not too far from the Capitol of Alabama.

Lost Treasure of The Cross on the Rock

The LEGEND speaks of how it is valued at over $350,000 or probably more given the recent spike in the price of gold and it mentions how Native Americans knew of the tale of the “Cross on the Rock” as handed down by their elders. Also known as the lost treasure of Borie it is conjectured to be one of the little known caches of hidden wealth yet to be found in America in the center of a woodland paradise known as God’s Country, Potter County, USA.

Could this treasure still exist?

Intrigued by the legend I embarked upon a journey of discovery searching for the source of tale; determined that if it existed it was to be mine.

When this treasure was hidden, America was yet a vast wilderness in the 1600’s. Few other than the hardiest explorers and fur trappers had ventured further inland than the coastal colonies. However when Louis Frontenac arrived in 1672 Canada was no longer the infant colony it had been when Richelieu founded the Company of One Hundred Associates. Through the efforts of Louis XIV and Colbert it had assumed the form of an organized province and Frontenac as the new governor sought to create regulated parishes and trade opportunities from Montreal to New Orleans in “New France”. Through armed conflict Frontenac expelled English Colonists and subdued the Native Americans claiming a vast territory for France which was later marked by lead plates buried in the ground as identified by Celoron de Beinville and mapped by Father Pierre Bonnecamps, a “Jesuit Mathematician. The fur trade in particular flourished creating the wealth that Frontenac sought and the expansion of “New France” was progressing rapidly.

My research yielded that mid in the 1680’s, almost a full century before white settlers began to permanently occupy what is now Potter County, a small party of French Canadians from the fur trading establishment that belonged to Louis Frontenac and Robert Cavelier left New Orleans by boat, for the return trip to Montreal. I quickly discovered errors in the legend as recorded by others. I had been deceived in the details of the trip; most deliberately by someone desirous of keeping the secret of this treasure cache to themselves.

The original tale states [The planned route was up the Mississippi to the junction of the Ohio and then up the Beautiful River, as the Indians call it, to the Allegheny and then northward to the mouth of the Conewango near present day Warren. From that point, a short run would bring the expedition to Chautauqua Lake near the present day Jamestown, New York. From this point, the party could practically roll down hill by the way of Prendergrast Creek and then home free by the way of Lake Erie into Lake Ontario and Northward to Montreal. Nearly the entire trip would be made by water, without the danger of long overland, backbreaking portages.]

I soon came to learn that a trip down the Mississippi was a one way ticket in the late 1600’s. A folly to think that one could pull rafts or paddle canoes counter current for over 3000 miles back to Montreal in an expeditious manner through a hostile and unsettled wilderness! The return trips were always accomplished by means of sailing ships from the port of New Orleans to the port of Baltimore and then by ascending the Susquehanna River in canoe to the West Branch and Sinnemahonning Rivers and onward to Jamestown N.Y., up the Great Lakes to Montreal. The rivers were the highways of the 1600-1700’s with the only trails being those of the Native Americans; roads had yet to be created in any of the interior colonies.

[And so the coureur de bois left New Orleans on rafts loaded with provisions and a number of small kegs, each of which were loaded with gold coins covered with a thin film of gunpowder, and anchored securely to the crude log transports by means of ropes and iron nails. The gold was to be delivered to His Most Gracious Majesty’s Royal Governor in Montreal, (Gov. Frontenac) and the party was instructed to guard the valuable cargo with their lives. Under no circumstances was it to fall into the hands of the English, the Americans nor the hated Senecas, who were always at war with the French. ]

The party made the uneventful trip around the tip of Florida and up the East Coast of America to the Chesapeake Bay and began the second leg and more arduous portion of their journey. The Susquehanna River a relatively shallow body of water snakes languidly through Pennsylvania interspersed with white water and rapids that are known to wreak havoc on Northward voyages depending upon the season. The hazards of ascending rapids, portaging small waterfalls and evading hostile Indians through Pennsylvania’s Wyoming area were well documented. As the rivers narrowed avoiding Indians became increasingly impossible. Greatly outnumbered and pursued through the wilderness the Frenchmen became increasingly wary realizing that they had become the prey in much more than a cat and mouse game along the West Branch River.

With position fixed and mapped by the Jesuits the exasperated Frenchmen buried their treasure for safe keeping near the confluence of two rivers deciding that it was safer to secret it temporarily and return for it with a larger expeditionary force than to risk losing their lives and the treasure to the Seneca war party. The exact spot of the treasure was marked by the Jesuits by chiseling a large cross into the rock beneath which it lay.

The Jesuits led by Étienne da Carheil, well educated as a mathematician, religious scholar and cartographer and Father Ernest Laborde determined to stay behind to decoy and convert the savages to Christianity as the voyagers proceeded under cover of darkness up the Sinnemahoning River and onto New York eluding their enemies and escaping to Montreal.

Louis Frontenac was recalled back to France shortly after his fur trading party arrived in Montreal; unable to get to his money, and Cavelier died in 1687 at one of the trading outposts that he had helped to establish.

Frontenac returned to Quebec in the autumn of 1689, just after the Iroquois massacred the people of Lachine and just before they descended upon those of La Chesnaye. The universal mood was one of terror and despair. Quelling the warring redmen and securing his outposts from English squatters led Frontenac on a military campaign that lasted several years. Upon his victory he immediately sent solders to the Pennsylvania wilds to get his gold. With his health declining Louis Frontenac was unable to accompany his men and on the 28th of November 1698 Frontenac died at the Château St Louis. His fortune now destined to remain in the ground.

Frontenac’s enemies were fond of saying that he used his position to make illicit profits from the fur trade. Beyond question he traded to some extent, but it would be harsh to accuse him of venality or peculation on the strength of such evidence as exists. There is a strong probability that the king appointed him in the expectation that he would augment his income from sources which lay outside his salary. As a member of the King’s Court it was expected that to undertake such a desolate appointment in the new world it would go unsaid that any riches that could be garnered would be one’s to keep. Public opinion varies from age to age regarding the latitude which may be allowed a public servant in such matters. Under a democratic régime the standard is very different from that which has existed, for the most part, under autocracies in past ages. Frontenac was a man of distinction who accepted an important post at a small salary. We may infer that the king was willing to allow him something from perquisites. If so, his profits from the fur trade become a matter of degree. So long as he kept within the bounds of reason and decency, the government raised no objection. Frontenac certainly was not a governor who pillaged the colony to feather his own nest. If he took profits, they were not thought excessive by anyone except Duchesneau who was Frontenac’s rival in the King’s court who had been snubbed for the position of Governor. The king had recalled Frontenac not because he was venal, but because he was quarrelsome and returned him upon realizing that he was precisely the correct man for the job.

Native Americans knew of the rock and conjecturing as to its significance created their legend to explain its existence.

Near Keating until the railroad was built in 1901, could be seen the “Cross on the Rock” a great natural wonder a perfect cross of heroic proportions carved on a rock along the river. Fortunately an excellent photograph of the remarkable natural curiosity is in existence since it since has sloughed away.

Shoulder Impingement Exercises That Got My Shoulder Working Again

Shoulder impingement exercises are probably the last thing on your mind when you have a shoulder impingement. Any movement is painful so why would you subject yourself to further pain.

A shoulder impingement is a debilitating condition. I know because I managed to tear my rotator cuff at the end of last year and ended up with a shoulder impingement as a result of it. My supraspinatus tendon had become inflamed and was getting pinched every time that I tried lifting my left arm.

The pain was unbearable. At one point I was maxed out on pain killers and carrying a TENS machine around wired up to my shoulder just so that I could function. In case you do not know what I am talking about. The supraspinatus is one of the rotator cuff muscles.

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that surround the shoulder helping to stabilise it. They all hold the head of the humerus in place in the socket of the shoulder joint and all travel from the shoulder blade to the upper arm. They are relatively small muscles but vital to a healthy shoulder joint. Unfortunately they are also prone to injury especially for anyone who uses their shoulders a lot in sport or at work. Painters and decorators who are working above head height are prone to rotator cuff problems as is anyone who throws a ball in sport. The last group that are vulnerable are the over forties.

That is where I fit in!

A rotator cuff injury is a vicious circle. Once the tendon gets inflamed it can get pinched within a channel of bone that it runs through. Because it gets pinched it gets more inflamed, gets pinched more, gets more inflamed….see where I am going? Untreated the end result is that you could eventually snap the tendon altogether leaving you with a very nasty shoulder injury. After around four months of pain, I was on a short list for surgery but having already suffered a great deal of discomfort, I was reluctant to wait any longer so started researching shoulder impingement treatment on the internet.

I discovered that exercise is the key to recovery. Not lifting weights but exercises aimed at rehabilitating the rotator cuff. Start off with proper rest. That means avoiding completely any movement that causes you pain. The pain is an indicator that you are damaging the muscle more. This meant some fairly radical changes to my daily routine including giving up driving for a few weeks.

Treat the inflammation. I maxed out on anti inflammatory drugs and used ice packs to bring down the inflammation in the tendon. As things started to ease up I started some Pilates based exercises to gently stretch the muscles and stabilise the joint, gradually moving on to strengthening exercises. By starting slowly and building up gradually over a few weeks I was able to avoid any pain or further damage to my rotator cuff.

My shoulder returned to normal, pain free and fully mobile without the planned surgery! What do I put this down to? I believe that the over forties are susceptible to this injury because we change shape as we age. Our posture changes, we carry ourselves differently, sit badly and change the way in which we use some of our joints. We can get a bit lazy even. Our movements are not as fluid as when we were younger. All this has an impact on the body and leads to problems. Exercising properly gets things working again, sorts out our posture and gets rid of some of the problems that have crept in over time. This is not a revelation.

All of us know that we need to exercise to stay young. Sometimes it takes something like a shoulder injury to remind us how important it is.

7 Sales Steps When Opening New Accounts

Initial Sales Steps can make you a winner or loser with new accounts.

You must both know the correct sales steps and then do the correct sales steps. Anything less could impact your customer sales forever.

I had occasion to make a sales call with one of my consulting clients to evaluate his work and see where I could contribute. My client is launching two new businesses, a manufacturing company and a distribution company. He will be offering his product with the unique selling proposition: the premier product in quality-100% guaranteed; the lowest cost product in the market; and the same day delivery. These are powerful benefits, for sure. Can anyone turn him down? Maybe so if he does not follow the right sales steps.

The prospect we visited is using a similar product from other suppliers. We learned that the prospect also is outsourcing some work that could be brought in-house if he built up a little more volume use of the product. And, significantly, he had good relationships with a number of large customer accounts and enjoyed broad relationships with value added resellers of his products. My client was excited. Starting a new venture, he may have found his first large client; let us call him, Mr. Big Client. What sales steps do we follow to land the account?

After our sales call, we debriefed; only to realize that we did not have a clue about how this prospect should be converted into a new client. We had opened the dialogue, toured the facility, obtained a sense of the prospect and his business. We even highlighted a few areas where we could work together. Beyond that we were no closer to a customer transaction than we were when we started out that morning. Since I am the consultant and I am on board to help his sales agent(s) capture this and other new accounts, it was time for me to come up with the sales steps we needed. So, here they are.

7 Sales Steps to Open New Accounts

1.) Find out how your prospect will profit. I proposed to my client that he personally call the owner of the prospect company who we met, and discuss what the top 3 opportunities might be from is perspective. I am certain that the prospective client would not have encouraged a follow up call if he did not already have in mind some profit-making ideas. These motivating thoughts from his heart and mind are the reasons he will move ahead if satisfied. Concentrate on what is in it for him; pick the easiest and most immediate opportunity to detail out some get-started steps.

2.) Learn about the customers of your prospect. As the dialogue continues, seek information about how the prospect provides his products and services to his end customer. What is his distribution method (sales agents, etc.)? What is valuable to his customer? Can you offer an enhancement? How will his product and service sales increase as a result of using your product? Who would be the best prospects for trying new approaches? How could you work together? What low risk trials could be put together into a get-started plan?

3.) Learn about the suppliers to your prospect. Since your prospect is already purchasing in some manner a version of your offered products and services, you should investigate what he likes and dislikes about the current situation. Quality, delivery, service, price, relationships, inventory, collections, volumes, other products and synergies or leverage are all topics of interest. Dislodging this supplier(s) may be a bit of delicate surgery. It is a disruption. It will cause backlash. You need to handle things properly as you replace their current suppliers.

4.) Create new visions and opportunity. In discussion, explore with the prospect how they would like to further use your products, services, support or other things that you can bring to the relationship. What ideas did they always want to do, and how can you help? Is there some knowledge or training that you can bring to the forefront that could help their people? Is there a marketing idea or new sales method that can increase their sales? Can you better organize their purchases, inventory, and billing?

5.) Write out a specific plan for action. Most important of all, engage your prospect with the development of an action plan draft. Point out to the prospect that you are jointly creating a possible plan that could be executed if all the pieces fit together and it makes good sense and value for both parties. Think about it. A sales transaction never occurs anyway unless it benefits both sides. So, do the detail work and figure out a good strategy that pays off for both. From the draft plan, at least one good solid implementation will surface. This is the first project, first order, and first business transaction. Execute it now. Then, prove out the value and go to the next one; or revise the plan to encompass even more opportunties for the prospective client.

6.) Build the communication. During the initial sales steps, do not underestimate the need for open and frequent communication. This is a new relationship. It needs built to reach know, like and trust status. Communication by phone, by letter, by email, by text all should be used to demonstrate your full engagement; and, used multiple times, especially the phone. There will be little things that pop up: concerns, objections, etc. These need to be handled before they become problem issues and derail your efforts. Remember fixing a problem could take 10 times longer than avoiding it with good communication.

7.) Be appreciative, under-promise, and over-deliver. Deep in your own mind, become the new prospect. Think; as if you were them. What extraordinary attention and benefits would you want? Then, offer those benefits to your prospect. The success of every enterprise is a direct result of meeting the customer needs and wants. If you are to succeed, your new customer must be number one; and, you are at their service. The more excellent service you render to them, the more they will appreciate you; and purchase from you; and refer you to other opportunities.

So that is the plan I propose. Now, go find a new Mr. Big Client for yourself.

Execute the 7 Sales Steps. They will work for you, too.

Above Ground Pools – Repair All Metal Side Wall Problems

This page will explain to you all kinds of steel side wall repairs, here are just a few: side wall rusted around the skimmer or return jet, rusted to the point of rupture, and actual rupture of wall.

OK, let’s get started, we’ll start with the most common of all side wall problems and that will be rusted around the skimmer and return jet. First thing to do is drain the pool to about six inches below the skimmer or return jet, while the pool is being drained, take off the top rails above and on both sides of the skimmer, you might have to take two sections off on either side of the skimmer or return jet. Once that is done, take off the coping (plastic piece holding the liner in place). By this time the pool should be drained enough to take the skimmer or return jet off the side wall. (All references to the skimmer, return jet and holes in the side wall, will be referred to as skimmer)

Now, that’s all done, gently pull the liner up and over the side wall and expose the rusted or damaged skimmer hole. Next you determine how much you have to cut out to get rid of the rust, example, let’s say you determine that you are going to need to cut a hole 12 X 12 inches then you will need a piece of galvanized metal 24 X 24 inches to cover the 12 X 12 hole. The galvanized metal should be at least the same thickness or the next size up. If your not sure take a piece of the wall you cut out, for sizing.

OK! You got the galvanized metal and your ready to put it in place so all you have to do is cut the hole for the skimmer, you can use the skimmer as a template to cut the hole. Your next step is to position the replacement piece so that your skimmer hole is level, the easiest way to do this is measure from the top of the side wall to the replacement on both sides the measurement should be the same. Then use some duct tape to hold it in place. A little trick to keep all those metal filings from going between the wall and liner is to put an earth magnet on the drill bit while drilling and use a medium speed on your drill and the magnet will not fall off. Once in place you can get your drill and rivets ready, the size of rivets you should use is anything from 3/16 to 1/4 inch, get a big box because you will be spacing them 1 inch apart.

Let’s get on with the drilling layout, with a tape measure make a line 1 inch in from all edges and a second line 3 inches in, now on the one inch line put a hole in each of the corners, next from each corner hole you measure 1 inch both horizontally and vertically. Now from here we measure three inches from each corner hole and drill another hole, but before we drill anymore holes we want to put in a couple rivets to hold the replacement in place solidly. As you noticed the holes are two inches apart continue from each corner until you reach the center.

Now for the three inch line we put a hole in the corner and one hole in each direction two inches from the corner hole if you have done it right it should be in between two rivets on the one inch line so that all the rivets are staggered. Once you have all the rivets in place you can drill the holes for the skimmer. The final step is to duct tape all the metal edges so their is nothing sharp to pierce the liner when put back in place. Now all that is left to do, is to put everything back together the way it came apart.

This concludes the instruction for repairing the rust around the pool skimmer and the return jet and any hole in the side wall, for instruction on how to replace a whole section please read on.

Heaven forbid, you actually have had a blow out, if your liner got ruined then it is an easy task to take it out and repair the section before putting in a new liner, if you were lucky and your liner just got stretched a bit then things get a bit trickier. If you were really lucky you probably noticed a soft spot in the wall and checked it out and realized it was going to need repair soon. If any of these scenarios fits your problem then the remedy is at hand. Read on.

First, you will have to take about half the pools top rails off. Of course if you are replacing the liner than they all have to come off. Next remove the coping and lift the liner over the side wall. Now depending on the size of the hole, you will need an extra two feet of galvanized metal the same size in height as the existing metal. Cut out the rusted piece and put in your new piece. Now from the end of the new sheet of metal measure in three inches and score a line from top to bottom on both ends, and a similar line nine inches in from the ends.

Also, make sure your lines don’t line up with one of your upright supports, if they do slide your panel one way or the other so that they don’t line up, OK, starting from the top measure down one inch on the three inch line and two inches down on the nine inch line and mark a drill hole, and you continue on both lines two inches apart till you reach the bottom. Drill three or four holes, then put in some rivets from the inside out, you want the flat part on the inside of the pool, and then continue drilling. When you have finished with the rivets put some duct tape on them and on the edge of the metal and put your Pool back together again. I hope these instructions helped you get more years of pleasure out of your pool.

If you have any questions please submit them at Above Ground Pools and Decks

Homework Hints – The Five "P" Strategies For Successful Test-Taking

Lots of kids are afraid of tests.  Some think that the evaluation is going to judge who they are as a person–are they capable, smart or good students?  It is useful to remind a nervous test taker that the test is about knowledge and skill.  So, the trick to successful test-taking is to follow the five “P” strategy:  Plan, Prepare, Practice, Be Positive and Punctual.  These strategies assure that a student is able to effectively demonstrate his/her grasp of a subject.

Plan — At least a week before the test date, Set aside time each day to spend a little time reading,  reviewing, and remembering.  Break the expected information (chapters, ideas, techniques) in to sub-sections and plan on focusing each day on just one sub-section.  This step is important because it allows students to mentally prepare for the test.  The pre-test jitters are reduced because the student is aware of the time put in and the effort to learn boosting his/her confidence.

Kids know when they haven’t done their best.  Students who don’t plan for the test often feel unprepared because they know they may have shirked their responsibility avoiding the nose-to-the-grindstone time spent.  And, their self-acknowledged lack-of-effort undermines the confidence that is required for successful test-taking.

Prepare — Some kids can just read the material and “get it”.  Others need additional modes of information input.  Outlining the chapter or rewriting notes from class in an outline form can help kids organize the information.  Outlining also helps to illuminate what pieces of information are missing.  Plus, for “visual” kids, a visual snapshot of the outline creates a picture that the student can access visually during a test.  Sometimes talking about what you know helps cement it into your memory.  Reading through an outline out-loud and telling someone else between-the-lines information, helps “auditory” learners store the information.  They’re thinking, talking and hearing their own words, making them more memorable and available during a test.

Practice –Making up test questions can often help students practice before taking the test.  When important information is formed in a question, the key ideas can be emphasized.  When taking the test, students are wise to “highlight” (in their minds if not on the test paper), the key words that determine what the question is really about.   Practicing the process of breaking questions down into their key words makes the process easier and more accurate when taking tests. In addition, having some idea about what might be on the test and how it might be worded can ease the jitters and build confidence during the actual test.

Be Positive — Remember: You can do it — others have done it — and most have survived!  And, if the student has planned, prepared, and practiced for the test, he/she has the best chance of doing well.  A little like Dumbo’s feather, kids who have done the work have more confidence because they believe they are prepared.  Unlike Dumbo’s feather, it is legitimate confidence based upon real study skills.

Be Punctual –to prevent feeling rushed or hurried.  Student’s anxiety creates a physical state of anxiousness (nervousness, sweating, heart palpitations, rapid breathing).  Then when kids “feel” anxious, they think they “are” anxious.  This mistaken belief can often block a student’s ability to relax during the test –with his/her mind open and available for the questions on the test.  Being relaxed before the test begins (by being on time) helps keep students relaxed and attentive during the test, confident they are ready to do their best.

The Essential Benefits Of Emergency Lighting

Life without light is definitely not possible these days. Light has become a custom part of our life. If in case there is a power crash, which happens very often, it is quite difficult to manage any work for that matter. In this case, emergency lighting will prove handy. Emergency lighting is available in several shapes and dimensions based on its usage and space. Its finds its use mainly during situation where there is a power outage. It serves as a backup light; therefore, you need not be harmed by obscurity in any situation. There are different types of emergency lighting fixtures available for people to choose from. Safety lighting, emergency standby lighting, escape route fixtures are some of the common varieties of them. Each of them is designed in such a manner to provide lights in case of emergency situations. Out of these, escape route light is highly reputed product which finds its place in hospitals and offices. Emergency lights are generally battery operated; therefore, one can easily operate them without any hassle. They are usually placed over emergency exit doors in order to maintain safety at times like power break down.

LED bulbs are used in roof top emergency lights. These LED bulbs are brighter when compared to other traditional bulbs and therefore sufficient to light up dark safety passage or office building. Standby lights are most often used in hospitals as they provide adequate amount of light in spite of any power outage. The only disadvantage of standby emergency lights is that it requires a special source of independent power house. This makes it difficult for people to install it in their house. They need to be connected to electric wiring that is backed by a generator. When there is a power breakdown, they will be turned on mechanically and continues to light until the power restores. Therefore, these types of lights are often used in commercial applications.

Among other lighting sources, safety lighting forms an essential source of emergency lighting. It is primarily used in critical applications where heavy machinery work is carried out. It plays a crucial role here. They are placed in areas involving large machinery works. Therefore, when there is a power crash, the machineries could be switched off quite easily. The situation is thus dealt safely. Additionally, it can also be used in areas inside your home like fuse box. If in case there is a short circuit, you can turn off the main switch without any hassle. Due to its high-end usage, safety lights are becoming beneficial in many scenarios, forming a reliable source of lighting. Although emergency lights are used only during power crash, it can help save during critical situations. Bear this in mind and make it a point to have them at any cost to ensure proper safety.

Warehouse Equipment – A Variety of Types and Their Respective Applications

A warehouse is more of a storage building where raw materials, goods and other commodities are kept. It may also refer to a large store where wholesale products are stored. Considering the space requirements of a warehouse, keeping track of inventory as well as lifting the items into taller stocks may only be made possible with the aid of a machine. Here is where the concept of warehouse equipment enters the scenario.

There are different purposes served by warehouse equipment. One may use it for the purpose of lifting objects inside the warehouse or carrying items from the outside of the building. There are also machines that may be used in unloading and loading purposes. To get a clearer view of these different machinery, here are some items included in the list.

Forklifts and dock lifts

Forklifts are machines engaged in the transfer of loads of materials for warehousing, construction, manufacturing and handling purposes. Pallets or platforms of loads may be placed inside a forklift as long as the equipment’s capacity permits it. It is subcategorized into three types namely the manual drive, fork truck and motorized drive.

Dock lifts on the other hand are types of work platforms relevant in order to lower or raise a certain set of materials, work pieces and even people to position them in their proper places. These items are very important in automotive and garage services, construction, telecommunications, inventory management and cable industries. These types of equipment are bought according to lift capacity and travel as well as platform length and width.

Industrial carts and trucks

These are types of warehouse equipment whose main purpose is to transport not only materials but another form of equipment. There are cabinet carts with drawers and doors placed on a compartment. Container or utility carts are also found on the list and are often used in a wide array of applications. Drum carts are also popular types designed specifically to lift drums. These items may also be further classified according to its features. These items are used in: janitorial activities; appliance transports; office materials, mails and file organization; and for waste recycle and removal.

Other forms of equipment for warehouses

There are still other forms of warehouse equipment. One example is the dock equipment used in assisting loading and unloading activities. This machine starts getting materials from trucks then delivers them to buildings. There is also the pallet jack. This one is a device utilized in order to lift and transport pallets. It works by gradually lifting the pallet but not in a level as high as forklifts and dock lifts can manage.

The Difference Between Western & Country Home Decor

Western decor includes cowboy, horse, and even buffalo theme items. Western decor is not limited to the cowboy theme, even though it is extremely popular. Western decor can also include lodge or cabin decor.

Cabin decor includes bear, moose, deer and elk design items, whereas, cabin decor includes trout, pine tree, fishing, oak leaf and duck items.

You don’t have to live in the wild west or even own a horse to surround yourself with western furniture and accessories. Western home decor can convey a western outdoorsy charm and appeal. With western home decor you may comprise an outdoor scene featuring forests, wildlife, horses, and cowboys.

The colors used in western decor tend to be darker and warmer, reds, oranges, and yellows are used to convey the idea of a western sunset. Many people like the walls in the house to be somewhat of a neutral color. An off-white, light tan, or sand color works well western style decorating since these are subdued earth tone. A few colors that will match the natural landscape are skyblue, forest green, or dusty rose color.

Another area of western home decor are the rugs. Rugs that go great with the western style are rugs with a southwestern design, sheepskin rugs, and rugs that depict wildlife such as horses or bears.

Some other things you want to consider in western home decor are horseshoes, stars, and plenty of cowboy decor. No western wall would be complete without several old brown tinted photographs.

Country home decor includes candles, sunflowers, wicker, pottery, dried flowers, handmade quilts, and red or blue gingham curtians. Country home decor brings about a warm and cozy atmosphere. Decorative country accents can bring a sense of farm life, family, and a relaxing feel to any room in the house. Using antiques, homemade craft items, and country-style accessories will add charm and character to your home.

Country decor should reflect floral prints, comfy sofas with ruffled skirts. The use of natural wood and products that reflect a natural earthy style protray country living. Natural wood floors, light wood furniture as opposed to dark, or wicker furniture gives off that country charm.

When it comes to the walls, whether using wallpaper or paint, use colors that reflect the country feel. You can even use stencils with flowers or country scenes to bring the country comfort into your home. No country home would be complete without a braided rope rug or a wooden rocking chair with a handmade quilt draped over it.

Another design style much like country decor is shabby chic. Shabby chic gives that comfortable, worn, old, vintage look. A country shabby chic theme could work well with county accessories that have an antique worn look.

It’s whatever your personal taste is, whether you prefer the traditional ranch style western home decor or the comfortable coziness of country home decor for your home decorating. You can be assured that you will have plenty of accessories to choose from that have the charm and down-home appeal.

Add Value to Your Home With a Garage Floor Epoxy Coating

To sell a home today requires every edge possible. Remodeling the garage is an inexpensive way to get the edge. When a prospective buyer opens the garage door seeing a nice floor, cabinets and wall organization shelving they get excited. The house has credibility giving the prospective buyer confidence that the home is solid.

Start With A High Performance Coating

There are lots of options available. You may have seen kits available at home improvement stores. Don’t be fooled by the nice labeling on the box with a nice yellow or red car sports car. Inexpensive epoxy paint doesn’t have the capability to perform on most concrete floors. Moisture which is in every piece of concrete is continually emitting a vapor and pushes salts to the surface. This is what causes chipping and demanination. It’s caused by capillary pressure or in extreme cases hydrostatic pressure.

The inexpensive coatings are very thin with every blemish bleeding through. A high performance epoxy is a thick coating of approximately 11-15 mils. Thin, inexpensive floor paints might be only 4-5 mils when wet and less when they dry. Ask about mil thickness before you buy.

Surface Prep Is Critical For Long Term Performance

80% of all floor coating failures is due to improper surface preparation. Make sure that you use a high quality crack filler or patch product. Cutting corners on quality means problems later. If your patch or crack delaminates so will your coating. Again, just because the product says crack filler on the label doesn’t mean it works.

Make sure that you etch the concrete surface first. Professional applicators use a shotblaster which is a walk behind machine that shoots tiny ball bearings at the surface. This abrades the concrete making the surface feel and look like coarse sandpaper. This process increases the surface area for the epoxy to adhere to.

As effective is etching the concrete with an acid. There are two types, gel and liquid acid. Liquid acids are typically very weak, inconsistent and overly saturate your concrete with water. Again moisture is the enemy of any coating. You can get the same result etching your concrete with a gel acid. Gel acids have been a big breakthrough for the Do It Yourself epoxy market. They are safe and easy to apply by just rolling on and they work. The results are just like shotblasting.

Hot Tire and Chemical Resistance

You’ve probably seen painted garage floors that are peeling off the floor where the tires travel. Some times you’ll even see a path that follows the tires with extreme failure where tires stop. Tires get hot from friction with the road. This extreme heat will cause all but high performance epoxies to break down. When epoxies are mixed the chemicals cross link like a chain which gives them strength. Inexpensive products don’t have the capability to handle the extreme heat from tires. Their cross linking is weak.

Decorative Chip Systems

Concrete floors are never flat. They have highs and lows that are the result of human imperfection and how concrete cures. When you apply decorative chips into epoxy it takes your eye away from imperfections and adds a decorative result. You can apply a light chip broadcast which lightly scatters the chips or a full chip broadcast that gives complete coverage. Only a thick high performance epoxy will enable you to apply a full broadcast.

Cabinets and Shelving

Once your floor is complete you can think about adding cabinets and shelves. The full package of flooring and cabinets really creates the wow factor if you are looking to add value to a home. The garage remodeling market is huge but not everyone has made the investment. If you are a seller looking for a solution to make your property stand out a few thousand dollar investment in your garage will make all the difference.

Tips to Prevent Fuel Pump Failure and to Extend Its Life

The fuel pump is an important part of your car’s fuel delivery system. It delivers fuel at optimal pressure from the fuel tank to the engine. A well-functioning fuel pump helps your car run efficiently. However, due to various reasons, it is prone to wear and tear. In order to prevent this, you need to take some preventive measures, which not only help you avoid sudden failure of the pump but also to increase its life. Following are some preventive tips.

Avoid using contaminated/low quality fuel:

Contaminated or low quality fuel affects the performance of the engine. Research shows that it is the main reason for half of the engine failures. Contaminants affect the functionality of fuel pump and therefore the engine. They put more load on the pump and hence cause excessive wear.

Avoid using low quality fuel that does not meet optimality parameters such as viscosity, heat value, flash point, etc. It is sensible to follow manufacturer’s guidelines in this regard. Also, make sure that you refill your car at reliable and trustworthy gas stations.

Don’t run vehicle on low fuel:

This is important because running the vehicle on low fuel will lead to sedimentation of the contaminants (at the bottom of the tank). This clogs the fuel filter and leads to fuel pump failure.

It is also important to make sure that the fuel tank is not near empty. Running the engine in such a condition may make the fuel pump get exposed to heat, which eventually affects its functionality.

Avoid using cheap additives:

Car owners try to use additives assuming that these additives will improve their vehicle’s performance and mileage. But the fact is that the additives don’t do much good if you already have a healthy vehicle and are using the right octane level required by your vehicle.

Some cheap additives may contain corrosive chemicals that may damage the sensitive parts of the engine system such as the fuel filters, injectors and the pump. Therefore, it is sensible to avoid using cheap additives.

Replace filters and strainers periodically:

Replace the fuel tank filter and one that is associated with the injectors. Make sure to replace these filters once in 3-6 months or whenever they get blocked.

Also, replace the fuel strainers. They help filter debris. Over time, debris accumulated in the strainers can block fuel flow, and can result in suboptimal functionality of fuel pump and even failure. Follow manufacturer’s guidelines while replacing the filters and strainers.

Regularly clean and maintain fuel tank:

The fuel tank accumulates dirt, debris, water, fungi over time. The sources of these contaminants might be different. Further, storing the vehicle in areas that are prone to water logging could be a cause of water getting into the tank. The fuel itself leads to sedimentation at the bottom of the tank because of rusting. All these lead to failure of filters, and the fuel pump. Make sure, therefore, to clean the tank on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer.

The fuel pump functions in a way similar to human heart that delivers blood across the body. Its failure causes death. Similarly, the fuel pump in your car is a vital component in the engine system. Following the tips we just discussed is likely to prevent failure of the pump and increase its life.

Lean to Carports Or Single Slope Carports

Lean to carports which is also called single slope carports are generally used when the carport needs to use an economy of space.  The other type that can be used is a flat roof carports. When choosing a carport that is attached to your house you might want to consider a single slope carport  If the only practical location for your carport is adjacent to your house or another existing structure such as a storage building then you might find yourself limited in the type of carport you are able to build.

Multi slope carports don’t work for many reasons. A major reason is the appearance of these structures in relation to the house or existing structure. The delineation between house and carport should not be clearly marked or it will look like the carport is not an integral part of your house. You want your home and carport to look as though they blend together as one.  Another reason is related to functionality of the roof line. If you live in an area that has a great deal of annual snow fall you will want to make sure that the ice will not gather between your house and the carport. In the spring thaw, the runoff melted snow will need a clear and direct path to escape to the ground. You do not want the water from the melted ice to puddle against your home. Exposing your masonry work to standing water is a sure way to prematurely age and damage your brick work.

Lean to carports tend to look more natural and blended into your home than a flat roof. Matching the pitch of the roofs is very important. If the roof lines march then the two roofs look like they are meant to be together. This element of the carport design is particularly important for older homes.  With respect to heritage homes the chose of carport is critical and those areas will have strict zoning by-laws that restrict any addition.  Most additions in those areas will need to fit with the original look of the house

Flat roof carports have one undeniable benefit over the other types of carport roofs. These structures can be used as a base for a second story. An experienced contractor could probably do the job in one day.  Using the roof as a deck or even the base for a second story addition is made easier if there is a pre-existing window over looking the carport location. Changing this window into a doorway is a easy proposition both work-wise and financially.  These structures are also not limited to small spaces and be stand alone structures.

Consider location of your new carport in relation to the purpose. Building in a small space might limit your choices.  Once the carport is constructed you will have to look at it for a long time.  Make a careful choice.   A lean to carport or a single slope carport might suit your needs best.

Top 10 Best Mouse and Rat Traps

Mouse and rat control is a lot easier than most people think. Preventive maintenance such as keeping lids on trash cans, eliminating entry points into your house and most importantly, sanitation, are crucial to controlling these pests. Uneaten pet food and piles of debris in and outside the house are havens for rodents. Sometimes elements outside your control, like having slobs for neighbors, or new construction in the area can easily attract rats and mice. So, when it’s time to get rid of mice or rats, mouse traps and rat traps are the best way to rid your home of these nasty creatures.

Before you implement a mouse or rat control program, it’s always best to know the signs of a rodent infestation. Seeing a mouse or rat run through your garbage is an obvious sign, but more telling signs you have a mouse or rat issue are rub marks along walls, strong urine odors, gnawing and droppings.

What to use for bait it also key. Most people believe cheese to be the best, but unless you’re trying to catch Jerry, use peanut butter on mouse traps; Fig Newton’s work great too. Using raw hickory smoked bacon has proven to work great for rats.

Below you’ll find the best traps to kill and get rid of mice and or rats. Using traps, if positioned and used correctly, is the best form of mouse and rat control, especially if you have animals and or children.

1. Paper and Tray Glue boards – This is, hands down, the easiest and safest mouse and rat trap. Especially if you have children and pets. Just place these traps along a wall or in a corner until a mouse or rat comes along.

2. Mouse / Rat Snap Traps – There are many types of snap traps on the market, but the most common are the basic pull back and set style, and the all so popular, and very effective expanded trigger versions. The wider trigger paddle increases the catch rate immensely.

3. Auto Set Snap traps – These are great for the people who are deathly afraid of setting the standard snap traps. The easy quick set mechanisms make this trap ideal for the novice mouse hunter.

4. Bait stations with T-Rex – Basically a black box with a trap inside. Mice and rats never see it coming. The most popular bait box / station trap combination is made by Protecta with a T-Rex trap. The bait box acts as harborage and safe haven for mice and rats, and this style of trap plays a safety role when children and pets are present.

5. Tin cat – This trap acts as a monitor / mouse trap that uses the peel off mouse glue board by Catchmaster. Widely used in used food packing plants and stores, but can easily be used in your home. Tin cats are enclosed which helps you to avoid have the rodent being stuck to an exposed glue board.

6. Ketch-All wind up – A wind up multi catch trap that doesn’t kill, at least most of the time. Mice crawl into an opening and the spinning paddle swoops them into a holding cell.

7. Live trap – A lot like the Ketch-All, a live trap is a lot smaller version of standard live cat and dog traps. A Fig Newton or peanut butter in the back behind the trigger plate does the trick every time.

8. Cube Tilt Trap – A cube trap is a gravity trap with a door on one end. When the mouse enters, the cube tilts causing the door to close. Peanut butter at the back of the tube works great.

9. Electric Trap – This trap speaks for itself.

10. Homemade – This is for the guy who wants to make a better mouse / rat trap, or wants to try something different. The most common is the 5 gallon bucket and soda can with wire stretched across the top. Don’t forget to place the board on the lip of the bucket (AKA plank), before you send the local mice and rat populations to their death.
