Will Holes in a Wall Affect Its Soundproofing?

The short answer is; yes. When it comes to basic soundproofing, any gap, crack or hole (like those left after an electrical re-wire) can significantly reduce the performance of an otherwise soundproof partition.

Sound insulation is used to reduce any sound that can pass through a structure. Sound is carried between two spaces via two different routes; the wall/floor and also indirectly, as it travels through the structure which surrounds it – this is known as ‘flanking’.

Flanking can often take a more complex and less obvious route around structures, like floors or walls which flank objects such as an open window or a partition, doorways, corridors, air ducts etc. This is the main reason why it’s so important to make sure everything is airtight when you’re building an acoustic partition; even the smallest hole or gap can mean a lot of sound escapes through.

To give you an example; a single square hole around 25mm in size can affect the performance of a otherwise soundproof partition by as much as 15db. Sound leaks that are around one-tenth of a percentage point of an overall partition can limit the partition’s effectiveness to about 30db, even if that same partition had been rated at around 55db.

Any noise problem you have should first lead you to the weakest part of the structure you’re looking at. When talking about walls, sound insulation is normally purely related to airborne sound, such as music, television or speech, whereas floors also need to be soundproofed against impact noise such as footsteps or things being moved from one spot to another.

The average sound insulation when protecting against airborne sound, when talking about solid structures, usually depends on mass. So the heavier the material which can be used for transmission the greater it can resist any airborne sound transmission. Which explains why it’s easier to hear what other people are saying or doing when walls are thinner.

The soundproofing in any structure will always perform better if any higher mass layers can be isolated from your existing structure.

If you are experiencing problems with noise pollution from an existing wall partition, you must first inspect your wall and any adjoining areas/abutting walls carefully to check whether sound insulation is at optimum efficiency.

If possible, also examine the area of the wall within the roof space for any problems such as missing bricks; if any are missing, they should be replaced. Also check for cracks, small holes or any unfilled mortar joints, which can then be sealed with cement mortar mix. It’s also wise to check for gaps, cracks or any bad mortar joints behind skirting boards or in spaces between floorboards.

Calligraphy – The Beautiful Art

The art of making beautiful and elegant handwriting is called Calligraphy which requires skilled penmanship.

The literal meaning of the word calligraphy is beautiful writing. Books were written in calligraphy up until the invention of printing machines. Using quill and ink the handwriting was written onto materials like parchment or vellum. There are three main styles of calligraphy which are prevailing now. Arabic, Chinese – known as oriental style and Western or Roman are most popular modern calligraphy styles.

The range of calligraphy includes simple hand lettering to fine art pieces where the expression of the handwritten mark may take precedence over the legibility of the letters. Typography should not be confused with calligraphy.

Wedding and event invitations, maps and other works involving writing, use modern calligraphy. Today’s calligraphy has little to do with the artistic discipline of each character. It is simply good penmanship that attracts attention and has a distinct style of its own. This type of calligraphy is referred to as “modern calligraphy” or “New York Calligraphy “, created by the New York calligrapher Anne Robin. Find more info at []

Latin calligraphy or the writing system along with Greek and Cyrillic writing system is known as Western Calligraphy. Early alphabets had evolved by about 3000 BC. Long, heavy rolls of papyrus were replaced by the Romans with the first books, initially by simple folded pages of parchment made from animal skins. In the beginning reed pens were used for calligraphy which was subsequently replaced by quill pens.

Prolific copying of the Bible, particularly the New Testament and other sacred texts gave a boost to the development of Calligraphy. Monks in Ireland and Scotland used Uncial letters in their calligraphy which is also known as Insular Style of Calligraphy. Illuminated manuscript was considered the zenith of western calligraphy in Northern Europe during 7th to 9th Century.

Alcuin, the Abbot of York undertook a major revision of all styles of script and all texts to spread the art of beautiful writing. He also developed a new style called “Carolingian Minuscule” style named after his patron in Charlemagne.

12th Century saw the growth of Blackletter also known as Gothic script. After the invention of printing by Gutenberg in the 15th century, hand-written and hand-decorated books become less common.

Using a sharp pointed nib instead of the flat nib a new style called copperplate was invented in 15th Century. It resembles the etchings of engraved copper hence the name copperplate.

Balliol College, Bodleian Library, Corpus Christi College, Jesus College, Magdalene College and St John’s College of Oxford University, converted major works considered as treasures in calligraphy, in digital format to preserve them over a longer period.

Security Lighting Techniques to Deter Crime

A simple way to enhance your home’s security is to install some lighting. There are three different techniques to use lighting for security purposes. They are dusk to dawn lighting, motion activated lighting, and a combination hi/lo lighting.

Dusk to dawn lighting the simplest, oldest trick in the book. The idea is that a lit home will discourage a burglar because they can no longer operate under the cover of darkness. It is both real and a psychological tactic that makes the burglar feel less secure. The lighting system uses a photocell control either external or built into the lights that detect light levels and switch on when lighting levels get low. The downside to this technique is that the lights are on all night long and the energy costs and lamp replacement costs can really add up. Also, it’s hard for neighbors detect unwanted activity since the lights always look the same.

The motion activated lighting is one of the more popular techniques. It is a very effect deterrent and since most of the time the lights will stay off and only go on as needed the energy costs as well as replacement lamps are much lower than the previous technique. Imagine the flood lights coming on while the would-be perpetrator is still 30 yards from the point of entry.

The last technique is a combination of the first two. The system is set to keep the lamps on at approximately twenty percent of full wattage from dusk to dawn. Then there is the motion sensing part that turns on the lights to full wattage when the sensors detect some motion. Its costs is not quite as low as the motion activated system but not as expensive as leaving the lights on all night. It also provides a nice glow all night which is comforting for most people.

When it comes to protecting your home and your family, security lighting does a good job as a simple yet effective prevention measure against intrusions or other criminal activity on or to your property. It will definitely aid in the detection of intruders, to deter intruders, or in some cases simply to increase the feeling of safety. However, it does not offer any real protection if something really does happen. Lighting security is a deterrent and should be used as such. Only a surveillance security camera can protect you and allow you to seek retribution against the offenders.

The Benefits of Used Plant Machinery

Every industry uses some sort of plant machinery or the other. They are needed to make great quality products that will stand up to the mark, and often are the only way to get the job done right.

However, building, manufacturing and constructing anything in today’s world can cost a lot. Everything involved simply keeps adding to the costs – the heavy machinery, the mortar, the raw materials etc. Many companies however have found a feasible solution to reducing costs that come with the construction business, which is to either rent or buy such machinery.

Here it is crucial to point out that the used plant machinery is increasingly popular in many industries because of a number of benefits. Few of the biggest benefits associated with such machinery are mentioned below.

Cost Effectiveness:

By buying or renting used plant machinery, a company can dramatically lower the overall cost of the business plan. Many firms have now capitalized upon the need for used plant machinery by providing a huge variety of good quality second-hand equipment to those who need it.

Eradicating Cash Flow Problems:

Aside from the fact that costs go down, sometimes there is no other option for some companies other than going with used plant machinery. This could be due to cash flow problems, common in small companies. But it only results in further advantages, because the money that these small businesses save can then be used for other things needed to complete a project that is underway. Or if a small manufacturing firm is thinking of expanding its horizons and acquiring more clients, it will need more plant equipment to deal with all the extra work.

Again, buying used plant machinery will save them a small fortune and still enable them to deal with their clients efficiently, and consequently their profits will go up since production costs had gone down. In addition to this, supposing a firm has been given a job that will last for only a couple of months and needs a specialized piece of equipment. The company can save a massive amount of money by simply renting good quality used machinery, and then returning it once the job is satisfactorily completed.

Similarly, with the demand for used plant machinery only going up, some companies can make a fortune if they sell off plant equipment that they no longer need. They can make even more money if they provide a warranty, giving customers total peace of mind.

What Are Thresholds and Transitions?

It’s often the little things in a flooring project that really finish the job, and that’s where thresholds and transitions come in! These little guys are the separation between one floor and another, or they can top up your tile edge to give it that professional look you want. So, what’s the difference between the threshold and the transition? Good question.

Thresholds are the spaces between one floor to another, normally around 4-6 inches in width. Transitions can be made of many different materials including, but not limited to: marble, granite, and stone. There are many ways to install a transition in the sense that there’s no right or wrong direction or style. What you are doing is separating one floor from another, usually from one room to another.

A good example of this would be a tile floor in a hallway, to another tile floor in a kitchen. You would place the 4-6 inch threshold in the doorway, allowing you to start the tile in the next room in any direction or type you wish. So if you had ceramic tile in the hallway, but wanted porcelain tile in the kitchen, a threshold would allow you to do this while still looking professional. Even if you just wanted to use the same tile in each room, but wanted a different pattern, adding a threshold will work very well.

Transitions are close to the same thing, as they also separate one type of floor from another, though normally these floors are far different from each other. Transitions come in plastic and metal forms, metal being the more expensive, professional choice. There are many different types of transitions, depending on your particular application.

Are you transitioning from tile to carpet? There’s a transition piece for that. From hardwood to tile? There’s a transition piece for that as well. Even if you’re going from tile to tile, you can just use a transition piece instead of a threshold piece, depending on the final look you want.

Make sure you know your height of flooring you will be using or transitioning to, when you’re deciding what’s best for your floor. If you have a floor that’s very thick like hardwood and you want to come down to your existing vinyl floor, choose the piece that has a downward slope that allows your feet to easily slide up or down.

In the end, it’s dependant on you and your particular application and taste. There is no right and wrong decision for this. That being said, don’t put a transition piece down that’s meant for a carpet, when you’re going to tile, or use a ¾” thick stone to threshold beside a ½” ceramic tile. Common sense is important to use as well.

Have fun deciding what look you want, and if you can, check out other people’s homes to see what you like or don’t like. Either that, or purchase a book or magazine on flooring and see what looks good there. You’d be surprised at what’s out there.

What to Know When Selecting a Pressure Relief Valve

Don’t make the mistake of trying to pick the right relief valve for your application based on just the size of the pipe in the system or the set pressure.

The first thing to determine is the type of pressure relief valve you are looking for. There are two common types of relief valves. One is the “safety” or “pop off” valve that opens completely when the set pressure is reached, diverting all, or almost all, of the flow out the discharge port of the valve. An example of this type of relief valve, made of metal, is found on hot water heaters to protect them from damage should steam form inside the heater and cause over-pressurization.

The other common type of relief valve gradually diverts the flow out of the discharge port as the pressure is relieved. This type of valve is often used not only to relive pressure but also to control the flow in the system.

In this type of valve a spring pushes a piston down onto a seat. As the pressure exceeds the set pressure, the piston is moved off its seat and the flow is gradually diverted out the discharge port. More flow is diverted as the system pressure continues to increase above the set pressure. When the piston is pushed as far up into the valve body that its design allow, the maximum discharge flow is reached. These types of relief valves are use to control flow as well as pressure.

One application that we can use for an example is to use a pressure relief valves to protect a pump from operating against a closed off system or restricted flow piping system.

Let’s say you have a 3/4″ piping system that requires a flow rate of 20 gpm at 40 psi. The pump in the system is rated at a nominal 50 psi at 20 gpm. A plastic relief valve is to be installed in the system to prevent the pump from having to operate against a closed system should a valve downstream from the pump be closed.

A 3/4″ valve set at 40 psi (the required system pressure) will flow 13 gpm at 10 psi overpressure (the set pressure of 40 minus the pressure output of the pump of 50 psi). This size valve will not work. It will flow only 13 gpm, 7 gpm less than the required 20 gpm.

Since the 3/4″ valve won’t work because it’s flow rate is too low, we’ll next try a 1″ size valve. At 10 psi overpressure a 1″ relief valve set at 40 psi has the capability to flow up to 27.5 gpm. Since this is more than the 20 gpm that is required, the 1″ valve is the one to use.

Remember, all applications are different. Have a professional or manufacturer assist you in determining the correct size.

Lean – A Concept That Is Engineered to Work in Any Organization

Many belonging to the commercial world harbor the misconception that the concept of “lean” is something that is meant for only those organizations that produce their wares in bulk. If you, too, are one of such people, this is the best post that you are reading because it rightfully will change your perception.

One interesting fact

Let us begin with one interesting piece of information: The Toyota Production System, which has introduced the concept of lean to the world, was itself a product of low-volume requirements. This fact must legitimately put to rest all the false assumptions about lean.

The concepts of lean

The principles of lean enable a business to:

· Find out ways for eliminating different types of wastes

· Determine whether or not the customers (of a business) are satisfied by the services offered; if the customers are satisfied, the cash flow will definitely rise

Now, let us read up on the factors that motivate any company to apply the concepts of lean within its infrastructure.

Why lean can be applied in every organization?

The concepts of lean can be easily implemented within any company-regardless of its nature and size. Whether it is a hotel, a hospital or an insurance company, the lean principles can be implemented in any of these businesses. Now, here are the factors that make this implementation possible.

  • Reducing inventory
  • Bringing down the delivery time, set-up time and cycle time
  • Minimizing wastes

These three requirements are felt by every business; and the principles of lean can be put to work for meeting such requirements

How to implement lean?

However, the approach to lean may differ from one organization to another. Despite the difference, there are a couple of basic steps that is largely used to implement lean.

  • Ensure to implement the technical change, and then take care of the cultural changes.
  • Make sure that every staff member is coached well to embrace the changes-whether technical or cultural.
  • Implement well-designed Kaizen workshops for not only teaching the relevance of changes but also making a few quick ones.
  • Develop a robust communication channel for everyone working with the organization.
  • Prepare the leadership to sign up for long-term learning programs.
  • Empower the top brass to tackle every short- and long-term resistance (to change) issued by the firm’s mid-level management.

However, each of these steps is pretty critical; and the business can ill afford to execute any of them incorrectly. Which is why, it is apt to have the support of consultant teams, which can offer the business exceptional lean manufacturing assessment and can let it know where and when to execute these steps.

Text Neck and the Heads Down Generation

There’s a new “buzzword” circulating the health news: Text Neck – a term used to describe pain and damage in the neck caused by looking down at a mobile phone.

Text Neck is on the rise!

But why is this modern condition causing pain and discomfort when people have always bent their necks to read?

Texting adds yet another activity that relies on the neck and head tilting forward and people tend to do it for prolonged periods. What’s even more concerning is the fact that adolescents and children could be risking permanent damage to their necks which could possibly even lead to lifelong discomfort.

So what are the signs and symptoms of this new age complaint?

Text Neck usually presents with neck soreness and pain but can sometimes cause severe and acute muscle pain in the upper back. Other symptoms may include:

  • Sharp pain in the upper back or shoulders
  • Tightness and pain in the shoulders
  • Shoulder muscle spasms
  • Pinched nerves in the cervical spine, leading to pain and neurological symptoms
  • Early onset arthritis

So why is excessive texting so harmful to our neck health?

When we use our phones to text, our posture adds stress on the neck that can go on to cause a lot of wear and tear. Our heads weigh between 10lbs and 12lbs yet this weight is significantly increased as we angle our heads to look at our mobiles. With many Smartphone users regularly spending hours with their heads tilted, frequent excess pressure is being put on the cervical spine. People often get carried away when they text or use their Smart devices. Regular breaks from being in the tilted head position are often missed or forgotten about.

In a normal standing position, the head faces forward and the curves of the spine and neck stay in their proper alignment. When the chin is dropped to the chest, the whole cervical structure is stretched.

So how is Text Neck treated?

Prevention is better than cure when it comes to treating Text Neck. Below are some effective tips for preventing the onset or worsening of the condition:

  • Make sure you hold your mobile phone at eye level as much as you can. Just like you would do with a laptop or desktop screen, your mobile phone or tablet should be placed in a position that is naturally comfortable for you. If you need to tilt your head forward or look down to see the screen, adjust the position until it is at eye level.
  • Take frequent breaks away from your mobile or tablet. If you think you are likely to become distracted then set your alarm to remind you to put down your device and walk around every 20 to 30 minutes. It’s also a good idea to implement some strict “mobile free” time into your day. Switch your phone off; put it aside and out of your mind. This will soon become a habit and you will probably find that you actually enjoy the break away from it!
  • If you work at a computer, make sure you adjust your screen so that your head is positioned in alignment with your shoulders and spine.

Remember that it’s not just your mobile that may put you at risk of the symptoms associated with Text Neck. Think about the posture you adopt when you undertake other daily activities. Do you bend your head forward when you drive? Do you tilt your head when you watch the television? Anything that causes you to look down for prolonged periods of time may put you at risk of developing painful and uncomfortable symptoms.

Take a moment to check and adjust your position. Take regular breaks and walk around. These small changes may just save you from developing chronic pain.

Vinyl Decking – Advantages and Disadvantages

Vinyl decking has become really popular lately owning to its flexibility and low cost. Vinyl is an artificial substance that has two advantages over traditional hardwood – its easy to clean, and does not require daily cleaning.

Like hardwood decking, vinyl too is quite strong and can withstand a large range of temperatures. It doesn’t crack, decompose or decay easily. It can stand a lot of moisture, so if you live in a rainy area, you can rest assured that your decking won’t decay and rot (vinyl is water proof by nature).

Besides, vinyl decking is also comparatively safer as it doesn’t have any edges or nails sticking out. This is something that you should keep in mind if you have young children in the house.

Vinyl decks are pre-modelled and you can order them for any particular size that suits your requirement. The planks are usually patterened after wood or some other natural substance. Most manufacturers will have a plethora of options to choose from and you can even pick out a custom pattern that goes well with the overall theme of the house.

A great advantage of vinyl decking is that it is relatively very easy to install. While wood decks require professional expertise and can take a few days to weeks to install, a vinyl deck can be up and running in no time (keep in mind that these come pre-modelled). The other advantage is that you can get it in any color or pattern, unlike hardwood which has only a fixed pallette.

But of course, there are some disadvantages too. For one, it can give your deck a cold, artificial feeling. Nothing can really replace wood, which gives a natural warmth. Vinyl decking can end up looking very artificial, as something of an after-thought, detracting from the overall look of the house.

On the other hand, vinyl decking is more environment friendly than wood since it is usually made from recycled materials. So if you are environment conscious, this makes a good choice, even though most of the hardwood used in decking nowadays is sourced from ecologically managed forests.

Vinyl is a great alternative to hardwood decking and you should definitely consider it, especially if you want a custom pattern or color and don’t want all the hassle associated with wood.

How To Remove Common Stains From Bluestone Pavers

Even though the dense and hard characteristics of bluestone make it a very popular choice for interior and exterior paving projects alike, it is a stone that is prone to developing stains over time. This can have a very detrimental effect on the appearance of your stone, especially if the stains are left for long periods of time to fester and further ingrain themselves into the surface of the bluestone pavers. Use this guide to help you remove stains as soon as you see them.

You should always begin by giving your bluestone pavers a good clean – you never know when this simple method is actually going to succeed in removing that pesky stain. Use a neutral cleaner that has been specially made for use on natural stone (even better if it has been designed for bluestone), a special stone soap or a mild liquid detergent (the kind you use to wash the dishes). Add this to a bucket of warm water and use either a mop or a soft cloth to apply the solution to the pavers.

Stain Removal

If simple cleaning was ineffective in removing the stains your bluestone has developed, one of these methods should be able to do the trick.

  • Organic: These are pinkish-brown stains that are caused by coffee, fruit and leaves being left on the surface of the bluestone. On outside surfaces, simply remove the offending material and let the sun bleach the stain away. On inside surfaces, use a solution made up of water, a few drops of ammonia and some 12 percent hydrogen peroxide to remove the stain.
  • Oil: These stains often appear greasy and are caused by cooking oils and greasy foods being left on the surface of the bluestone. Use a liquid cleaner, such as dishwashing liquid, mixed with water to remove.
  • Ink: These stains can be removed on lighter bluestone using bleach or hydrogen peroxide. For darker stone, use a lacquer thinner or acetone to remove the marks.
  • Biological: These stains are caused by mildew or algae growth; you will need to kill the bacteria in the bluestone to effectively remove it. Use half a cup of ammonia, bleach or hydrogen peroxide that has been diluted in water (only use one and never mix these chemicals).
  • Metallic: These stains are caused by rusted furniture leaking into the bluestone below and are very difficult to remove. You may need to mix together a poultice to leach the stain out.

Regardless of the dense and hard nature of bluestone, it can still be stained if it is not handled or maintained correctly. If you notice that your stone has developed stains as a result of a spill or weathering, try using one of the above techniques to remove it and restore your bluestone to its former glory.

Are You Superstitious?

Do your throw salt over your shoulder, avoid walking under ladders or leave something behind for good luck when you move house? Do you ever wish upon a star? Superstitions have been handed down from generation to generation from time immemorial. Here are some you may recognise and some which may be new to you. Some you’ll believe, some you’ll reject others you can have fun with.

Apples: You’ve heard: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Or, that if you peel an apple in one long strip and recite the letters of the alphabet as you do so, the letter you have reached when the peel breaks is the first initial of a future lover! Or, if you slice an apple in two, without cutting a seed your wish for love will come true.

My Husband Is So Cold And Distant To Everyone After His Affair (Including Our Children) – What Now?

I often have women tell me that they can’t help but notice some very troublesome personality changes in their husband after he cheated or had an affair. Sometimes, the wife isn’t the only one who is noticing these changes. Often, the children involved or other family members can’t help but notice as well. Sometimes, even the husband’s boss or coworkers will mention noticing a difference.

I recently heard from a wife who said, in part: “my husband is so cold to our entire family and social circle after his affair. I expected and hoped that he would be falling all over himself trying to make this right because that’s just the type of person that he has always been. My husband has always coached my kid’s sports teams. We’ve always been the house where the whole neighborhood hangs out. I’m not bragging when I say that most people think very highly of my husband. Before he had an affair, he was so loving, giving, fun loving, and outgoing. Now, he’s distant, aloof, and cold. He doesn’t even resemble the same person.

He no longer plays with the kids in the yard. He no longer seems to be willing to lend a hand at work. I can’t tell you how many people have approached me about the changes that they’ve noticed in him. One of my children had an assembly at school that was a big deal to him. My husband didn’t even show up. My child was crushed. I have no idea what to do about this. Maybe I could eventually accept this if it was only affecting me but it’s not. He’s being cold and uncaring to every one in his life. How can I make him realize what he’s doing and get him to stop? It’s like he’s distancing himself from every one who was ever important to him.”

This situation was so unfortunate. And it rises to an entirely different level when there are children involved. I strongly suggested that the wife in this situation seek out some counseling for her family. In the following article, I will discuss why you might see your husband acting very cold after he is caught in an affair and how you might consider handling it until you can get some professional guidance.

Sometimes A Husband Acts Cold After His Affair Because He’s Trying To Distance Himself From The Fall Out Of It. He May Also Have Become Used To Suppressing His Emotions: Sometimes, you will see a man sort of shut down when his whole world comes crumbling down around him. ( Of course, in this situation there was no way to know what the husband’s feelings and motivations were without hearing from the man himself,) but I do hear from a good deal of men on my blog and I am able to get a bit of insight into their thinking and their motivations.

Many times, they sort of shut down after the affair comes out because of some combination of embarrassment, shame, and uncertainty. Sometimes, the are quite sorry and ashamed. As a result, they feel as if they don’t deserve their family or acquaintances so they will back off as the result. Sometimes, they actually think that their family doesn’t want them or would be better off without them.

Other times, these husbands have some uncertainty about the future. They aren’t sure about the future of their family so they begin to think that it might be better for every one if they just hung back for a while. Sometimes, they aren’t sure how every one feels about them so they figure that it’s best that they don’t push.

Sometimes these men distance themselves emotionally because they just aren’t sure where their heart is. I have had men tell me that they weren’t sure if they were going to go back to their wives and their family so they hold back while they are making up their mind. They don’t want to deal with all of the questions or accusations so the emotional distance is one way to try to achieve a physical distance.

And here’s one more point that you may want to consider. Often, by the time a man has an affair, he is having some emotional struggles. Often, his attempts to deal with these emotions include his trying to push them down or deny that they exist (which is why he’ll often make poor choices like cheating rather than dealing with his problems and emotions.) This denying or pushing down his feelings can almost become a habit. So in a sense, these men start off becoming cold to themselves and this eventually becomes a behavior that spreads until it affects other people.

Also, because this husband’s behavior was so odd and out of character for him, it wasn’t out of the question that he was having some mental health issues or challenges that could and should be addressed by a professional.

How To Handle A Husband’s Cold Attitude After His Affair: Hopefully, you now might have some insight as to why your husband may be acting this way. Now let’s discuss what to do about it. Needless to say, this wife was very tempted to call him on his behavior. And, it was also very tempting for her to act in a forceful way that wasn’t typical of her just to get a reaction. He had been so detached and hard to reach that she felt she may have to pull out all of the stops just to get him to hear her. As understandable as this was, I felt that it was the wrong call. With the way that the husband had been acting, it was unlikely that calling him on his behavior was going to have a good result.

Instead, my most immediate concern was with the children. I strongly felt that family counseling should be pursued as soon as was possible. In the meantime though, I suggested that the wife set some ground work. She might approach her husband and address that immediate concern. She might consider a conversation like: “you missed our son’s assembly the other day and he was incredibly hurt and disappointed. I don’t want for what is happening in our marriage to effect our children. These are two separate issues and the kids are the most important of the two. Our children did nothing wrong and they don’t deserve to lose their father’s involvement over this. Can we discuss ways that you might get more involved with them? They need and miss you and I don’t want our issues to negatively affect them.”

In this way, you are laying the groundwork for future progress and you are placing your focus on what is most important – the children. You’re also letting your husband know that you have no intention of banishing him from the family because of his affair. This may help him to let down his guard somewhat. But this really is only a start. And I hoped that the wife would follow up on this issue as needed.
