Second, they would say that it would give children a broader avenue for their references to which they could relate more; hence, making learning more fun and practical to them. The children’s learning and education would not be limited to what books and teachers say to them. Instead, lectures are illuminated and enlivened. Teachers would have an easier time getting the interest and attention of the children. Lastly, it is argued that children would have no need to spend much for the purchase of textbooks or for photocopying them. They would not need to bring heavy books and bags in school.

On the other hand, critics would say that popular media would make children lazy as they are being spoon-fed with readily available and accessible materials for their use. For example, children would be tempted to plagiarize and just to copy answers from the internet. This minimizes the practice of critical thinking and analysis among children. Second, this would give children unbridled discretion and leeway to use the available media to their own advantage and personal gratification.

Third, popular media is not appropriate especially for the use of young children because if not properly regulated, younger children will be more unduly exposed to pornography, crimes, violence, games and the social media, which is as yet beyond their comprehension or is unsuitable for their age. Their curiosity will be nurtured without proper adult guidance. As a result, they would be confused and demoralized by conflicting and inappropriate information. Fourth, the use of it would have a discriminatory effect because not all school children have access to all popular media. Lastly, classroom instructional teaching may eventually be replaced by machines and gadgets, and soon, there would be no more need for teachers.

Whether popular media is acceptable and effective to use or not is really up to the teachers and instructors to decide, as both sides of the arguments do have their respective good points. In any case, instructors are reminded of their responsibility to give their pupils the proper guidance and follow-up that are necessary and needed, being persons who have moral ascendancy over the latter in school.

The Difference Between Desk and Table Lamps

Table lamps also provide a nice source of light with which to highlight objects that are placed near the lampshade and effectively bask in the light of the lamp.

One thing to look out for when purchasing a table lamp is that there should be no glare emanating from the lamp and this is best checked when you are seated, given that most table lamps are placed on a table beside an armchair. Pay particular attention to the lamp height and also to the accompanying lampshade – as a fairly deep shade is needed to avoid glare.

The lower the mains pressure is, the less water that may be stored in the accumulator, so always remember to oversize the accumulator by at least one clear size more than your unvented cylinder or flow rate requirements.

Use Sleep Aids? Don’t Let the Wrong One Ruin Your Game

I guess it wouldn’t be fair if I told you the benefits of sleep without giving you advice on the best sleep aids available. There are a multitude of factors that lead me to believe that sleep aid use is quite common in the world of poker. They include: 1) the overuse of stimulants such as caffeine, Red Bull, Amp, Adderall, etc 2) the long duration of poker games, some lasting until the next morning 3) the increased play of on-line poker, lasting well into the night. I would imagine that poker players have their sleep schedules pretty screwed up. I’d even bet that their own circadian rhythm is probably a little off tilt. Don’t worry though. Hopefully after reading this section, you’ll be able to choose the right sleep aid for you so you can experience all of the great benefits of a good night’s sleep. You may even win more often.

Sleep aids

The majority of sleep aids are relatively safe and effective. Some are controlled substances, however their abuse potential is minimal compared to other controlled substances. The most important concept concerning selecting the best sleep aid is residual drowsiness. The last thing a poker play wants is to be drowsy the next day at the table. Too many bad things can happen if you’re sluggish. You need to pay attention to the sleep aid’s half-life. Half-life is really just a fancy medical term that describes the time it takes the body to eliminate half of the original concentration of the drug. Usually, it takes anywhere from 5-7 half-lives for the drug to be entirely eliminated from the body. Thus, if the original concentration of the drug was 10mg and has a half-life 2 hours, then after 2 hours the new concentration would be 5mg, and after 4 hours the new concentration would be 2.5mg, and so on. I’ll briefly discuss the most common sleep aids below. I’ve grouped them into the drug classes based on their mechanism of action. At the end, I’ll tell you my recommendations.

Prescription sleep aids

Non-benzodiazepine (non-BZN) sleep aids

These all work the same way. They bind to the benzodiazepine 1 receptor in the brain. The side effect profile is also similar. It includes drowsiness, dizziness, amnesia, headache, and GI problems. The difference between drugs in this class is their duration of action and potency.

Ambien is the most common sleep aid prescribed today. The half-life of Ambien is around 2.5 hours. Thus, it takes around 10 or so hours for it to be completely eliminated from your body. It’s pretty good at getting you to sleep and keeping you asleep. It’s also generic so it’s very cheap compared to some of the other sleep aids. If you’re looking to get a good night’s rest of at least 8-10 hours, this is my drug of choice. Its effectiveness and price make it the best of all of the sleep aids. However, if you’re in a tournament and may only get 5-7 hours of sleep, there is a strong possibility you may have some residual drowsiness the next day.

Lunesta is a relatively new sleep aid. The half-life is around 6.5 hours. Thus, it’s going to take a long time to get out of your system. It also does not have a generic so it’s pricey. Because of its long half-life and high probability of residual drowsiness, I don’t recommend this drug for poker players. The only time you should use this drug is if you can sleep for a couple of days straight.

Sonata is my drug of choice for this class. Its half-life is around 1 hour. Thus, it will be out of your system in 5-7 hours. It may not be as strong as Ambien or Lunesta, but it should do the job. If you’re unsure of how much sleep you’ll be able to get, you should select this drug. The chances of residual drowsiness are the least of any of the other drugs in this class. Because of its short half-life, it can also be used if you wake up early in the night and have trouble getting back to sleep.

Benzodiazepine sleep aids

These drugs are not as selective as the non-BZN sleep aids. They bind to not only the BZN1 receptor, but also the BZN 2 receptor. Thus, there is a higher likelihood of side effects. Side effects include drowsiness, decreased concentration, cognitive impairments, anterograde amnesia, daytime anxiety, and rebound insomnia. The differences in drugs in this class are time to onset of action, duration of action, and potency.

Restoril is the most commonly prescribed BZN sleep aid. However, it’s probably the worst one for poker players. The half-life is between 10-15 hours. Because its metabolites are also active drugs, if used for consecutive days, the half-life of the drug will actually increase to even more than 15 hours. Thus, there’s a strong likelihood you’ll experience daytime drowsiness. Even though it is cheap, I recommend staying away from this drug. The half-life is just too long.

Triazolam isn’t prescribed much anymore, however it’s primarily used for insomnia. Because it’s more fat soluble than Restoril, it’s onset of action is quicker, and its half-life is only around 2 hours. It’s good at getting you to sleep and keeping you asleep. In fact, this was the drug of choice by my professor of pharmacology. Side note: This guy was involved in the creation of Gatorade. His memory was unbelievable. He never used one note during his lectures. The problem I have with triazolam is its high incidence of anxiety and amnesia. Because it’s so fat soluble, it is in and out of your system leading to a higher incidence of side effects. Still though, if I had to use a BZN sleep aid, I’d choose this one over Restoril.

Other prescription sleep aids

These sleep aids don’t fall into any of the above categories.

Trazodone was originally used to treat depression. However, because of its unfavorable side effect profile and the introduction of more effective and safer antidepressants, it’s mostly only used for insomnia. The half-life is between 4-5 hours. Because of its long half life, and its ability to cause cognitive slowing, I recommend staying away from this if you play poker.

Rozerem is the newest sleep aid available. Because of that, it’s pretty expensive. It works a little differently than the other sleep aids. It actually binds to and stimulates the melatonin receptors in the brain. It’s been nicknamed melatonin on steroids. Its half-life is between 1-3 hours. It’s really only used in patients who have a history of substance abuse because it has zero addiction potential. In my opinion, there’s cheaper and better sleep aids available for poker players.

Non-prescription sleep aids

Melatonin is probably the granddaddy of OTC sleep aids. It’s a hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland at night. It’s thought to help regulate a person’s circadian rhythm. Its secretion is stimulated by darkness, and inhibited by light. It’s commonly used by people who experience jet lag or midnight-shift workers. Because poker players may have a screwed up circadian rhythm, it would be beneficial to include between 0.5-5mg nightly. Why the wide range of dosage? Some people sleep fine just using 0.5mg and actually experience stimulation on doses of 3mg. However, others need 5mg to help sleep. Find the dosage that’s right for you. If you experience drowsiness the next day, you probably used too much. I recommend the controlled-release melatonin over regular melatonin. In my opinion, those poker players that stay up late at night, and sleep well into the afternoon could greatly benefit from melatonin.

Valerian root is thought to have a similar effect as BZN’s because it inhibits the metabolism of GABA. Because it is not as potent as BZN’s, it’s onset of action is a little longer. You should take it about 2 hours before you go to bed. Because of this inconvenience, I don’t know how beneficial this will be to a poker player. If you do purchase some valerian root, look for supplements that contain 0.4-1% valerenic acid. A typical dose is between 400-900mg 2 hours before bedtime. If you’re looking for a natural supplement to reduce anxiety and help you sleep, this is definitely your best choice.

Magnesium is probably the hidden jewel when it comes to OTC sleep aids. It not only calms your nerves, it also helps improve the quality of your sleep. The majority of the US population is deficient in magnesium. It’s involved in hundreds of chemical reactions in the body, everything from anxiety to heart problems. Entire books have been written about the benefits of magnesium. Like fish oil, this should be a staple in every poker player’s nutritional regimen. Do not buy magnesium oxide due to its poor absorption. Take anywhere from 400-600mg of magnesium citrate or glycinate an hour before bed. Orange juice, apple juice, or tomato juice increases magnesium’s absorption while calcium or other diary products decrease its absorption. I cannot stress enough how important magnesium supplementation is.

Benadryl and other sedating anti-histamines should not be used by poker players. The increased likelihood of residual drowsiness and the lack of efficacy of improving sleep quality make these a poor choice for poker players. There are too many other sleep aids out there that are more effective.

I just wanted to give you an overview of some of the most commonly used sleep aids available. There are hundreds of others out there. There are plenty of Chinese teas and herbals that are purported to help improve sleep. My best recommendation is to read the science and research for yourself. You may even want to try a couple out. Only you will know if it works for you.


Hopefully you’ll take the above recommendations to heart. Remember, my recommendations are based on not only real-world feedback, but also on research. These aren’t just opinions. If you have any questions about anything I’ve said, please ask.

So the bottom line is to avoid sleep aids with long half-lives because the likelihood of residual drowsiness is much greater. Also, one thing I forgot to mention. If you take any of the above sleep aids with a meal high in fat, it’s going to take longer for the sleep aids to work. Fat actually slows down digestion.

If you think you’ll get 8-10 hours of sleep: Ambien

If you’re circadian rhythm is off from too many late-nighters: Controlled-release melatonin along with a sleep aid.

The drug everyone should take: Magnesium citrate or glycinate

Remember, don’t take multiple sleep aids. When taken by themselves, they are relatively safe. However, when combined, they can be deadly such as the case of Heath Ledger.

Step One – Clean and Dry

When teak wood furniture is made it usually has been mechanically sanded with causes the fine particles created by this process to actually clog the pores of the wood giving it the soft, silky texture that makes it so appealing for furniture. If you are going to apply a treatment to this type of furniture, you must first clean away this residue. You can use a mixture of laundry detergent and water to wash away the waxy coat that is created by the sanding process. Once the waxy coat is gone and it is completely dry you can begin to apply a teak sealant.

Step Two – Apply Sealant

You may find teak wood sealants come in a variety of shades to allow you to create the perfect coloring for your furniture. To apply a teak sealant to your furniture you will want to use a foam brush applicator and liberally apply the sealant, allowing the furniture to soak up as much as it can. In dry weather, the furniture will be dry to the touch within an hour and ready for use in 24 hours.

Examples of Defensive Driving

This article outlines possible situations which could happen at any time, when least expected, during your driving career. The defense suggestions are merely recommendations for the situation. Each problem varies as to detail, so the defense must vary according to the situation. Below are some specific situations and specific solutions.

Safe Driving Spells Survival

Situation 1

You are driving down the highway at 60 miles per hour approaching a curve when another car approaching from the other direction at 70 miles per hour crosses the solid center line heading straight for you.

Defensive Driving Tactic 1

Do not steer to the left across the solid line. Brake, and steer out of the way onto the shoulder to the right. Sound horn. Do your best to avoid fence posts, trees, etc.

Situation 2

You are driving a vehicle down a slight grade on a main highway at 50 miles per hour. Suddenly the rear right tire blows without warning, and the vehicle swerves to the left and heads for the center white line. A car is coming the other way at 60 miles per hour.

Defensive Driving Tactic 2

Do not brake. Gain control of the steering and bring the car back on the correct side of the road. Let the car slow down without using the brake. Pump the brakes very gently at 10 or 15 miles per hour, and stop the car at the side of the road, off the pavement if possible.

Situation 3

You are driving down the highway in a 60 mile per hour zone when a car approaches from behind. This car tailgates but does not pass.

Defensive Driving Tactic 3

Slow down so that the vehicle may pass. If possible, merge into the lane to the right allowing the driver to pass. Get off the road if necessary.

Situation 4

Defensive drivers are always prepared for the unexpected. Imagine that you are driving down a main highway approaching an intersection with a secondary road which has a stop sign. Another car is approaching the intersection on your right at a high speed, and it appears as though the other driver will not be able to stop. What defensive action can you take?

Defensive Driving Tactic 4

Slow down. Put your right foot over the brake. Be prepared to make an emergency stop if necessary. This is why it is important to look far when driving in order to pick up potential hazards in your peripheral.

Situation 5

You are travelling down a highway at night when your car develops engine trouble and starts to lose power. The car speed reduces to 20 miles per hour and the engine stalls.

Defensive Driving Tactic 5

Pull completely off the road onto the shoulder, or onto a driveway or lot. Turn the emergency four way flashers on. Lift up the hood. Tie a white cloth to the antenna and use flares if you have them available.

Situation 6

You are driving down a highway when suddenly a car coming from the other direction pulls out to pass. It is apparent that he has not got sufficient room to complete the maneuver.

Defensive Driving Tactic 6

Brake immediately. Pull over to the right. Leave the pavement and go onto the shoulder if necessary. It may even be necessary to go into the ditch if the other driver does not return to his own lane in time.

Situation 7

You are driving alone at night through a mountainous area where there are no motels. You become very tired about 50 miles from your destination. Gradually your eyes start to close for lack of sleep and you feel that you can no longer drive safely.

Defensive Driving Tactic 7

Immediately stop the car in an area off the road. Shut off the engine. Get out of the car and take a short walk. Open the window part way down and lock the car. Sleep for an hour or two, providing that the temperature is not below freezing. When refreshed, drive on.

Defining Suicide and Suicide Attempts

Suicide can be defined in the following manner: An act is suicide if a person intentionally brings about his or her own death in circumstances where others do not coerce him or her to action, except in those cases where death is caused by conditions not specifically arranged by the person for the purpose of bringing about his or her death, (Tom Beauchamp, 1978).

In general it was believed that two populations (those who commit suicide and those who attempt suicide) are essentially separate, made up of different individuals. In a sense the words attampt suicide are a contradiction in terms. Strictly speaking, a suicide attempt should refer only to those who sought to commit suicide and fortuitously survived. A good example is a story in the New York Times, August 11, 2006. In September 2000, Kevin Hines climbed over the railing of the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco, and jumped. Mr. Hines fell some 250 feet and survived, becoming one of an estimated 1,200 individuals who survived the leap since the Bridge opened in 1937. According to this theory, Mr. Hines is a legitimate attempt suicide survivor.

The overlap of the percentage of individuals who commit suicide with those who previously attempted suicide is estimated to be 45 percent, whereas the overlap of those who attempt suicide and those who subsequently are successful is about 10 percent. To attempt suicide with less than total lethality might be called quasi-suicide except that this term has the unfortunate connotation that such individuals are malingerers or are simply seeking attention, and thus do not merit our full professional and sympathetic response. I believe that any event which uses a suicidal modality is a genuine psychological crisis, even though it might not, under strict semantic rules, be called suicidal event.

Attempted suicide should be used only for those events in which there has been a failure od a conscious effort to end the life. Those events are attempted suicide. All other self-mutilations, excessive dosage of drugs, and other events of this nature should be called quasi-suicidal attempts or probably, most accurately, non-suicidal attempts. An individual who holds a fully loaded gun to his temple and pulls the trigger but the gun does not fire, can legitimately be said to have attempted suicide or have committed suicide and fortuitously survived; or leap from the Golden Gate Bridge and survive.

We should also evaluate each suicidal event on a continum, say from 1-9, of lethality. The term suicide, committed suicide, or attempted suicide should be reserved only for those events in which the lethality is reasonably judged to be high-eight or nine. This may depend on the method used; shooting, jumping, hanging, immolating, and where cutting or barbiturates are the method used, evaluation is based on the risk to rescue ratio. A suicide attempt is an event where the risk of death is extremely high and the probability of rescue or intervention is extremely low. Shooting oneself with a gun, jumping from a high place present few theoretical problems for this paradigm; the difficulties occur mostly in relation to barbiturates. It is not what you do…it is the way that you do it. Thomas E. Hill (1983), recognizing that real life situations are more complex than any of our philosophic categories called our attention to four specially defined types of suicides as follows:

Impulsive suicide is prompted by a temporarily intense, yet passing desire or emotion out of keeping with the more permanent character, preferences and emotional state of the individual. We need not suppose that he is driven, blinded, or momentarily insane, but this act is not the sort that coheres with what he most wants and values over time. In calmer, more deliberate moments, he would wish that he would not respond as he did.

Apathetic suicide, sometime a suicide might result not so much from intense desire or emotion as from apathy. The problem is not overwhelming passion, but the absence of passion, lack of interest in what might be done or experienced in a continued life. One can imagine, for example, an extremely depressed person who simply does not care about the future…not intense shame, anger, fear, but rather emptiness.

Self-abasing suicide results from a sense of worthlessness or unworthiness, which expresses itself not in apathy, but rather in a desire to manifest self-contempt, to reject oneself, to put oneself down. One’s life is seen as having a negative value…contemptable like a despised insect one wants to swat or turn away from in disgust.

Hedonistic calculated suicide is decided upon as a result of a certain sort of cost/benefit calculation seeing that others will be unaffected by his decision, the hedonistic calculator regards his choice as determined by his best estimate of the balance of pleasure and pain he expects to receive under such option.

Acccording to Durkheim suicide is the result of society’s strength or weakness of control over the individual. Durkheim posited four basic types of suicide, each a result of man’s relationship to his society. In one type, the altruistic suicide is literally required by society. In this instance, the customs or rules of the group demand suicide under certain circumstances. Hara-kiri (in feudal Japan) and suttee (in pre-colonial India) are examples of altruistic suicides. In such instances the person seemed almost boxed in by the culture. Under those circumstances, self-inflicted death was honorable; continuing to live would be igominious. Society dictated their action and, as individuals, they were not strong enough to defy custom.

Most suicides in the United States would be called egoistic by Durkheim. Contrary to the circumstances of an altruistic suicide, egoistic suicides occur when an individual’s ties to his community are too few or too tenuous. In this case, demands to live do not reach him. Thus, proportionately, more individuals, especially men who are on their own, compared with men who are married or who are church members, kill themselves.

Durkheim’s third type of suicide is called anomic suicide from the word anomie which Durkheim may have developed himself to describe that special kind of aloneness or estrangement that occurs when the accustomed relationship between an individual and his society is precipitously disrupted or shattered. The shocking immediate loss of a job, of a close friend, or of a fortune is thought sufficient to expedite anomic suicides; conversely, a poor man surprised by the disruption of a sudden wealth have also been shocked into anomic suicide.

A fourth type, fatalistic suicide, is suicide deriving from excessive regulation of the individual, where the individual has no personal freedom and no hope.

How to Cook BBQ Ribs in Rotisserie Oven – Rotisserie Grilling Recipe

Yes, you can have deliciously cooked BBQ ribs in rotisserie oven. It is possible using a Ronco Rotisserie oven and I have a scrumptious rotisserie grilling recipe to prove it. But, let’s begin with parboiling of the ribs. Prior to grilling BBQ ribs in rotisserie oven, baby back ribs are best when they have stewed for 15 minutes and thicker ribs when they have stewed for about 15 to 20 minutes.

After parboiling, marinate them in either of the following marinades via cooks.com:

For a fruity tang:

About 3 1/2 lbs. pork spare ribs or pork loin

* 1 can (6 oz.) pineapple juice

* 1/2 c. soy sauce

* 2 tbsp. brown sugar

* 1 tsp. ground ginger

* 1 onion, chopped

* 1 clove garlic, minced

In a jar with a tight fitting lid, combine all ingredients except ribs. Shake well. Pour over ribs.

For a beefy boost:

* 4 lbs. pork or beef ribs

* 3 bouillon cubes (beef)

* 1 1/2 c. water, boiling

* 1/8 tsp. garlic powder

* 1/2 c. brown sugar

* 1/4 c. soy sauce

Dissolve beef bouillon cubes in boiling water. Add garlic powder, brown sugar, soy sauce. Pour over the ribs. With either marinade, place ribs in refrigerator. Marinate, turning occasionally, for several hours or overnight before grilling. Drain ribs; set aside marinade. Brush frequently with marinade while grilling BBQ ribs in rotisserie oven for up to 20 to 30 minutes, depending on thickness.

Finally, how does one put the BBQ ribs in rotisserie oven?

One of the ways is using the kabob rods that are part of the accessory package for Ronco Rotisseries:

1. Arrange the spit rod assembly in the resting area of the rotisserie.

2. Place 4 empty kabob rods next to each other in the holes around the wheel with the spring ends on the left side.

3. Using another kabob rod, thread it through the first rib.

4. Take the last kabob rod and thread it through the last rib.

5. Wrap the ribs around the empty kabob rods already arranged in the spit rod assembly until you come to the end.

6. Insert the kabob rods attached to the ribs into the gear wheel, with the spring ends on the left.

7. For two racks of ribs, thread both racks at the same time, as described above.

(Please note that it is recommended to do 1 rack of BBQ ribs in rotisserie oven when using the Ronco Rotisserie Compact model and 1 or more racks when using Standard model and larger.)

Why My Clutch Is Smoking On My Go Kart

I have written several commentaries on this subject in the past, but I think it warrants rehashing, because there are two possible reasons why your clutch is smoking. I usually discuss one most likely reason, but in this article let’s talk about the two possible causes of why your clutch is smoking on your go kart.

First the fundamental understanding of go karts is needed. The drive line typically consists of a clutch driver and the driven axel sprocket. The driven axel sprocket is mounted directly to the rear driver axel which turns the drive wheels. This is a one step system, or a one ratio system.

The centrifugal clutch which is used on most go karts, uses weights that are mounted internally in the clutch that fling out and press against the clutch bell housing. The bell housing then in turn moves the sprocket driving sprocket teeth.

The typical clutch has 10 to 12 sprocket teeth. As a rule of thumb any clutch that has more than 10 to 12 sprocket teeth is going to give trouble to the drive line. Trouble as in smoking clutch.

The engagement of the weights to clutch bell housing occurs at a certain rpm. Typically this rpm is around 1800 to 2000 rpm. The engine needs to blast through this level of rpm and get the clutch pack to stick and finally engage to the walls of the clutch bell. The smoking aspect occurs when the clutch is engaging but is not fully grabbing. If the prolonged engagement occurs for too long, the clutch will start to smoke and eventually damage it to where the weights will only slip and perhaps even crack and break apart.

As I stated at the start of the article, the prolonged engagement occurs because of two possible reasons:

1.) The engine is not powerful enough to get past the engagement stage

2.) The clutch weight rpm is not high enough.

The engine not being powerful enough typically is the result of a mismatch in ratios to the rear drive wheels. So the real reason is that the ratio is not steep enough, and therefore the engine smokes the clutch.

(Another possible issue can occur and that is if the clutch is made to engage at lower rpm than the engine can grab at, the engine may not have enough power, and the engine will suddenly (more like violently) shudder and stop. It is not uncommon for the engine to be so overpowered that it rotates backwards momentarily.)

The second way the clutch will smoke is if the clutch rpm never reaches engagement speed, or it is in the neighborhood of engagement speed, but is not high enough above the engagement speed to get a lock. This will smoke the clutch and is prevalent in mismatched jackshaft systems.

The remedy for the first clutch smoking problem, is to alter the drive line so that the overall ratio is steeper. The simple method is to increase the rear sprocket diameter. Programs have been written that will estimate if you clutch will smoke or not, they typically are found on web pages or are available for purchase through various web pages. Typically what occurs is that the hp-ratio just will not be possible using the simple one ratio system. So a jack shaft needs to be added to make the ratio even steeper. In other words, making it a two ratio system.

This is where guys who install jackshafts need to be aware. The clutch typically cannot be put on the driver of the jackshaft, with a ratio in front of it. This will make the clutch rotate too slowly, even though the overall ratio is correct. So the clutch engagement rpm needs to be taken into account otherwise the clutch will smoke on the secondary jackshaft mounting position.

The bottom line is if clutch is not engaging because of either too little hp, or too slow of a clutch speed then the system need to be changed by altering the ratios either behind the clutch or in front of the clutch.

Power Tools History

Since the ancient Egyptians began using a hand-powered lathe centuries ago, man has striven to make arduous building and assembling tasks easier, quicker, and more efficient through power tools. We’ve come a long way from those sand-covered turning machines, but the end goal is no different from our desert-dwelling ancestors. Today, nearly every home in every industrialized country houses and uses power tools.

Even though the concept of the power tool has been around for a long time, it wasn’t until the late 1800’s when the first modern-era power tools became possible. The advent of electric motors made highly-efficient stationary and portable power tool technology a reality, and high-speed assembly lines made power tools both affordable and profitable.

The Bosch company was at the forefront of power tool technology in those early years. Founded in 1886 Germany by Robert Bosch, the company initially focused on automobile components with integrated electric parts, and was responsible for such developments as the first low-voltage magneto ignition. Before long, companies in other industrialized nations began developing the first electric power tools, and Bosch introduced its first power drill in 1932. Today, Bosch still engineers and manufactures automotive parts, and its power tool division has grown to include nearly every household and assembly tool on the market – including power drills, belt sanders, circular saws, and more. As part of the company’s growth, it has acquired other successful power tool manufacturers that started during the same early 20th century era.

In 1923, American inventor Raymond DeWalt introduced the world’s first radial arm saw, a sliding circular saw that could make long cuts with accuracy. One year later, he founded the DeWalt power tool company in Baltimore, Maryland; another company that has grown substantially over the last 85 years. At the forefront of portable power tool technology, DeWalt’s power tools are revered by carpenters and homeowners alike for their long-life, durable cordless battery-styled power drill, circular saws, and other power tools; and the company currently manufactures over 200 types of power tools worldwide.

Founded in 1915 in Japan, the Makita Corporation has also staked its reputation on cordless, battery-powered power tools – most notably, the hand-held drill, which Makita introduced in 1978. Nine years later, the company had a full arsenal of cordless, professional-grade power tools for contractors. Today, Makita manufactures over 350 different power tools, both portable and stationary, and the pronounced teal color emblazoned on all of their tools is often mimicked by others trying to capitalize on Makita’s reliable name.

The early 20th century proved to be a hotbed of power tool advancements, and many companies worked hard to develop profit-turning innovations that moved their products off store shelves and into people’s homes. While the term power tool traditionally conjures thoughts of electric drills and sanders, machines like the pipe threader and utility pump are also considered power tools. This is the area the Ridgid company focused on when it was founded in Elyria, Ohio, in 1923. Still a leader in the plumbing tool industry, Ridgid now has a power tool division that focuses exclusively on contemporary power tools and has released its own saws, drills, and even air tools.

A.F. Siebert founded the Milwaukee Electric Tool Company one year later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known for manufacturing heavy-duty power tools, Milwaukee is best know for the ‘Sawzall,’ one of the most widely-used reciprocating saws in the world. Like their power tool manufacturing competition, Milwaukee currently produces portable and stationary power tools like circular saws, drills, band saws, grinders and sanders – over 500 different models in all. Unlike their competition, many of Milwaukee’s power tools are released in both 120 and 230 volt models, drawing the line between household and commercial/industrial power.

Best known for the Skilsaw they invented in 1924, the Skil power tool company evolved out of the Michel Electric Handsaw Company when they entered the power tool market. Fueled by the ingenious circular saw invention, the company elevated itself to the upper echelon of the small power tool industry with jig saws, grinders, sanders, and a whole slew of handheld, cordless power tools. In 1996, the Bosch company purchased Skil but still keeps its power tools on shelves worldwide as one of the most popular power tool lines on Earth.

The Delta company has changed hands several times since it was founded by Herbert Tautz in 1919 in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin garage. Tautz focused on small tools but when Delta was purchased by Rockwell in 1945, the company made a profitable shift to the stationary tools – like planers and bench sanders – it’s renowned for today. Delta isn’t the only name this line has carried, however; Rockwell enveloped the company on takeover before selling it to Pentair, which re-introduced the Delta name before selling out to Black & Decker in 2004.

A veritable power tool power house, the Craftsman brand was coined by the Sears company in 1927. At first, the company primarily manufactured common hand tools like hammers and screwdrivers; but soon jumped on the power tool bandwagon and is now one of the top-selling producers of all power tools, both stationary and portable.

S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker founded the Black & Decker small machine shop in 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland; and the duo found their niche in the power tool industry by inventing the electric drill seven years later. The pistol-grip and trigger style drill became popular and is now a staple on construction sites and in households alike. Realizing the profit potential of power tools, Black & Decker has grown and acquired several other popular power tool brands, including DeWalt, Porter Cable, Delta, and Kwikset.

As industrialized nations become increasingly technology-driven, power tool production stands to increase as lightweight, powerful, and longer-lasting batteries try to match the power and reliability of corded power. Versatile contemporary models and thousands of accessories continue to make everything from woodworking to metal machining easier, more efficient, and more profitable for manufacturers, contractors, and homeowners alike. As power tools have become affordable for nearly everyone, only the hammer has resisted an electric redesign destined to change the way we work forever.
