It’s been a truly amazing journey. I’ve been in the video and multimedia production business since 1981 and in my 30+ years in the business, I’ve seen some absolutely incredible leaps in the industry. To put video in historical perspective, it was only 22 years before I took the plunge into professional video that Sony, Matsushita, Toshiba, and JVC introduced helical-scan recording, which is the method used since to record on video tape recorders. It took almost the entire subsequent 22-year span to bring these helical scan recorders into the home.

When I started in video production in 1981, consumer video recording was in its infancy. Most American homes did not have a VCR. VHS was still battling Betamax (what’s that?!) for supremacy in the home video format wars. Tape (huh?) was the staple of industrial and advertising video production and 2″ “Quad” machines (what??) were what the “real” broadcast studios used for their best quality editing and studio work. Field cameras capable of producing the best broadcast-quality pictures cost more than most houses at the time. (And now these have been surpassed in quality by today’s consumer camcorders.) The CD-Rom had not yet come on the scene, and internet use was years away. Compressed video and streaming on web sites were barely the proverbial “figment” of someone’s imagination. DVDs? HDTV? You’re kidding!

Yet despite the incredible technological advances over the decades, many things have remained constant. The need to capture and retain audience interest, tell a story, and accomplish one’s objectives were all critical to effectively communicating then, and remain so today.

And as technological advances have brought affordable high-quality video and multimedia into the hands of the neophyte, the need to use them “correctly” has remained. Just because you’ve got a paint brush, that doesn’t make you Rembrandt!

Yet we often see companies approaching their video and/or multimedia projects with a “Ready, Fire, Aim” approach. They use a shotgun when a rifle is called for. They try to appeal to several audiences with the hope that the program will serve multiple purposes. Remember, when you try to appeal to everybody, you appeal to nobody.

While the same basic program can sometimes be used for different audiences, it is recommended that different variations or versions be developed for those different groups. It’s a simple matter to re-edit or re-narrate portions of a production. However, efficiency demands that this is planned from the beginning of the project.

So remember to plan the project with your audience in mind. Know what their level of expertise or experience is with the topic. This will avoid the problem of shooting too low (e.g. wasting their time showing or telling them something they know) or too high (losing them because you assume a level of expertise they haven’t yet attained).

MISTAKE 2. DON’T PRE-DETERMINE YOUR OBJECTIVE

This goes hand-in-hand with the first item. In addition to knowing who you are talking to, you need to know what you want them to do or feel after the program has been delivered.

Whenever possible, the objective should be quantifiable. It is certainly easier to measure results in the area of training. As any good training professional knows, pre- and post-training assessment tests can quantify the results of a training program.

Similarly, for sales and marketing or communications, detailed testing and statistics can be gathered about project awareness and attitudes before and after the presentation of the overall program package. But each of those probably aren’t the real desired results – the true goal is pumping up the sales figures.

As in training, it is desirable to measure the effectiveness the sales or communications program has in meeting the stated goals.

There is a problem, however. Measurement of the specific impact of the video or multimedia program is difficult, as the production is typically not used in isolation. Instead it is usually part of a package of other material delivered in conjunction with the video or multimedia program.

Ideally, we would like to emulate large consumer companies, where extensive market research provides detailed analysis of specific advertising and promotional techniques. They can isolate the effects of individual components of an overall brand marketing strategy, for example. But this requires an extensive historical background and a very large sample size to help isolate variables and establish causal relationships.

However, this is more problematic in the business-to-business world.

B to B companies rarely have the historical data to statistically isolate the cause and effect relationships of individual marketing components. This is compounded because a new product or service introduction is often where we see the merger of these packages of video, trade show booth, collateral and trade publication advertising. This renders historical comparisons largely irrelevant.

The opportunity to measure program effectiveness is not impossible, however. Anecdotal evidence can be gathered from clients as to what portions of the total package made the biggest impact. This can even be formally quantified through the use of surveys. Mix in a good portion of industry experience and common sense, and the sales or marketing exec can often get a pretty good feel for the impact of the video or multimedia portion of the campaign, as well as the other individual components.

MISTAKE 3. JUST ASSUME THAT VIDEO OR MULTIMEDIA IS THE SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM

Not all problems can be solved through the use of video and multimedia, so that is why it is so important to understand the answers to #1 and #2 above.

In the area of sales and marketing, video and multimedia can be an important strategic component in the mix. In other areas, such a skills training, a video presentation might be just the ticket to be able to demonstrate proper technique to newly hired or promoted people.

In general, video and multimedia projects are best used where showing the product, service or process is advised. In sales and marketing, a particularly effective use is to show products in use that are impractical to bring to the prospective client for a demonstration. Over the years, we have done programs showing hotels, large assembly line robots, clean room processes, exercise programs, and many other areas where a demonstration in an office of the product or service is just not practical.

In areas involving interpersonal skills, such as management training, video might be a part of the solution. Establishing the groundwork in an area could be an excellent use of video, especially if there will be many employees over time who require this training. But for smaller groups, or for brief periods of time, role playing and other techniques could be warranted, whereas video and multimedia would not.

MISTAKE 4. TAKE THE ATTITUDE THAT “IT’S JUST A CORPORATE VIDEO”

Let’s face facts: your audience is comprised of sophisticated television and media viewers. According to Nielsen Research, the average American watches 4 hours and 35 minutes of TV each day.

With your viewers constantly bombarded with video images, they are quite jaded to “ordinary” video. They are sophisticated consumers of the media, so do not think that you they will excuse shoddy production values if you want to deliver an effective message.

The obvious implication is that the more important the idea you wish to communicate, the greater the reason to have your video or multimedia project professionally produced. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

I will be the first to admit that there are projects that are exceptions to the “it’s only corporate video” rule. If you are just recording a technical seminar or other “mind dump” for future new hires or people that are out of town, then by all means set up the camcorder in the back of the room and let it run. But even if that is the case, please see rule #7, below.

Now that we’ve addressed the pre-production issues, let’s examine some major production gaffes that will doom your production:

MISTAKE 5. SKIP THE LIGHTING AND OTHER EQUIPMENT THAT WILL REALLY MAKE THE IMAGE “POP”

The current level of electronic technology is truly extraordinary. Home camcorders are easy to use and affordable, and everyone fancies himself or herself a TV director. But as good as these cameras have become, a professional, high-impact look will only come when additional lighting and other equipment are applied. Even current reality shows are supplemented by lots of lighting instruments and other gear specially designed to make the shots look good.

Knowing how to light is a complete art and science unto itself. If you were to review the movie credits at the end of a major motion picture (without animation or special effects) over half the people would be involved in lighting and related areas to make the image look just right.

Of course, we’re not trying to duplicate “Gone with the Wind” here, but remember that the image that you show, is the image that represents YOU.

In addition to lighting instruments, some of the gear that might be called into play includes soft lights, gels, reflectors, bounce cards, cookies, scrims and light diffusion.

In one shoot we did featuring Steve Young of 49er fame, we used 2 big soft lights as the primary lighting source. We have also have other “harder” (e.g. not soft) lights above and to the left of this image – including fill and back lights.

A light cutter at the top center is used to keep too much light from flooding the background.

In another shoot outdoors, we sued a large reflector to the side of the subject along with a fog machine. The reflector is used to redirect sunlight for an outdoor shoot. We also used a half flag, used to block and diffuse some of the light coming from a large light (yes, you can use lights outdoors).

While such an array of lighting and grip equipment is typically not available for shooting corporate video on your own, it can enhance the image dramatically. And if your budget does not allow a complete video production crew to shoot the video, freelance lighting directors with rental equipment are available, and that could give a corporate video a look that will set it apart from other more amateurish efforts.

MISTAKE 6. DON’T USE A TRIPOD OR OTHER CAMERA SUPPORT

The pros know that a steady camera is critical to getting a good, interesting image. If the camera is bouncing around, the viewer gets distracted and often, annoyed. If the viewer’s mind is busy following the subject around the screen, it won’t be concentrating on your message.

At certain times, a moving camera becomes an art form, such as is seen in music videos. But corporate videos are not music videos. Keep the camera on the tripod and keep the camera movements smooth.

When the pros shoot, there are a wide variety of camera mounts available for image stabilization. These include various sizes of tripods, jib arms, cranes, dollies and a Steadicam.

In some shoots we might use a dolly, with the camera operator on board, and the dolly grip pushing it on tracks. The dolly tracks movement smoothly, but due to the expense of rental and the two people needed to operate it, it can be a pricey addition to the program.

We often use a jib arm to make swooping and climbing shots of a store facade, a factory floor, etc. The jib can be rented in various sizes and can create an almost 3D look. It needs a trained operator.

While the jib can move extensively around a subject, for true 3D views, a Steadicam is called for. This is a specialized harness that needs to be used by an experienced camera operator. It can give dramatic looks at the subject, including moving smoothly around them for 360 degrees or more. Unless you have a Steadicam and trained operator, don’t follow your subject around with the camera – leave it to the pros.

MISTAKE 7. USE THE CAMERA MICROPHONE TO RECORD THE AUDIO

The rapid improvement and compactness of video is also manifested in the audio that accompanies it. Camcorders today record excellent sound. But there is a problem.

The problem is that the sound source closest to the camcorder microphone will be recorded best. And this may not be what you want recorded.

Have you ever set up a camcorder in the back of the room to record a live seminar and listened to the result? Isn’t it amazing how the comments, coughs and collisions in the back of the room sound so clear – and the speaker is unintelligible at those points?

I simply can’t count the number of times people have come to us to ask if we can enhance the audio from just such presentations, and other live events as well.

In short, the answer is unfortunately “No.” We can not bring out audio that essentially is not there.

What is the solution? It’s all just a matter of microphone placement. In such a situation, you should invest in a lavaliere microphone for the presenter to wear. The mic is then in place less than a foot from the presenter’s mouth and will record clear audio.

Another option is to use a mic on a boom pole just out of frame. We’ve done this often, such as in the Steve Young shoot I mentioned earlier. The boom mic is typically just above the head of the subject, but is cropped out of the shot by the video camera.

If possible when buying or renting a lavaliere, get a good wireless microphone. Don’t defeat the purpose by getting a cheap microphone that feeds buzzes and hisses to your recording system. A pair of decent, yet inexpensive headphones will let you listen to the audio that you are getting. If you don’t get a clean signal, take the microphone back to the store and get one that works for you.

Prices for good quality mics have come down dramatically over the years, so if you are going to do much of this type of “talking head” recording, it’s worth the small investment.

Microphones are obviously not just for amplification. You need a good mic close to the subject to get good clear audio.

MISTAKE 8. LETTING YOUR IN-HOUSE “TALENT” JUST WING IT

Let’s face it, your co-workers are not professional actors, and they need some help to remember all the things they need to say and do on camera. I discussed this recently with another producer friend of mine, and he commented, “If I had a nickel for every time I shot an exec who said he could just talk off the top of his head… What disasters!”

I agree. Use a teleprompter. It mounts in front of the camera. Your executive or employee can look right at the camera and read the words as if he were looking into the lens. After a couple of practice runs, amateurs are almost always comfortable enough to blast right through the script. It’s money well spent as it means faster shooting, less errors, and fewer frayed nerves.

And if your executive looks stiff or really doesn’t like the feel of “reading” the words, we can put up bullet points or PowerPoint slides on the prompter so that he or she can still appear to be looking at the audience. This avoids the problem of the presenter looking away to notes or cue cards and looking “shifty eyed” as a result.

CONCLUSION

As always, the motto of “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well” applies to your productions. But there are times when a large full scale production is not warranted. Fortunately, it is no longer a matter of all or nothing when it comes to bringing professional production values to your work.

You do not have to spend tens of thousands of dollars for a program.

It surprises many people that are considering the production of industrial video or multimedia that there is an efficient middle ground that can be used. This can be a tremendous cost saver. This includes hiring one or more professionals to assist. This could be:

  • a producer/director to oversee your production,
  • a lighting director with equipment,
  • a teleprompter operator with equipment,
  • a make-up artist to make your executive look “just right”
  • an editor to bring together the footage you’ve shot into a crisp, effective program,
  • a graphic artist or animator to punch up your graphics,
  • a duplication facility to make mass quantities of your videotape, DVD or CD

Through the use of experienced professionals in some or all areas of your next production, you can ensure that you create a program that meets your objectives in an efficient and effective way.

America’s Haunted Lighthouses – South Carolina & Georgia

South Carolina and Georgia have many popular tourist attractions and three haunted lighthouses.

Fair Haired Annie, the Keeper’s Daughter

Georgetown (North Island Light)-South Carolina

This story is one of the saddest in haunted lighthouse history. The lighthouse keeper and his young daughter lived at North Island Light. On their way home from the mainland, fierce winds and high waves struck their tiny craft, flooding it. The keeper, with his beloved daughter tied to his back, swam back to the lighthouse.

The trip left him so shocked and exhausted that he couldn’t remember reaching shore, and awoke from his ordeal with his drowned daughter still tied to his back. Georgetown residents reported seeing the grief stricken keeper roaming the streets calling for his lost child. Sailors reported seeing a sweet blonde child on their boats as they headed out to sea. Even on sunny days, she warned them of danger, urging them to “go back.”

While working at his station, a young hand told his captain he saw the image of a young blonde girl dressed in pink, pointing at the jetties, and insisting he “go back.” The captain thanked him and headed back to shore. A strong wind and high seas came up almost hiding the jagged lighthouse rocks. As the boy stared intently at the beacon, the captain told him about the keeper’s fair-haired daughter, Annie who warns sailors of approaching storms.

The Ghost Who Told Stories

Haig Point (Range Rear) – South Carolina

Haig Point was the sight of a British massacre of Native Americans during the Yamasee Indian War in 1759. During WWII, a Nazi submarine was spotted off Daufuskie Island. In 1865, General Sherman gave the island to freed slaves, and until 1985, blacks who developed their own dialect and remained cut off from the rest of the world populated it.

Fast forward to recent times and meet Nick Beatty, the lighthouse keeper’s son. Nick was fascinated with Daufuskie and he, his sister and brother enjoyed exploring the beach and nearby cemetery. Each time Nick’s parents visited the main land they left their friend, Sal in charge of the lighthouse and the children. Nick and Sal were alone at the light when they suddenly heard footsteps coming down the stairs. They counted the number of steps, and realized that someone was coming from the top floor into their room. They saw no one, but the rocking chair started its back and forth motion, and stopped as soon as Nick got close enough to touch it.

Weeks later, Nick told his mother tales of shipwrecks and the Indian massacre at the hands of British solders. When his mother demanded to know where he got these tall tales, Nick described a white haired, white bearded man named Arthur. Nick’s mother, having never heard of Arthur asked the islanders if he were familiar to them. Sure enough, Arthur was a former keeper whose simple gravestone was in the cemetery where the children played. Nick and Arthur enjoyed a wonderful friendship and on occasion, the rest of the family saw him in the kitchen or walking through the yard.

Nick loved that he had a great friend who told him the most thrilling stories!

Unfriendly Neighbors

St. Simons Island Lighthouse – Georgia

During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers destroyed both this light and the keeper’s house with black powder, preventing Union soldiers from using it. It took ten years to rebuild, but stagnant ponds of water caused resulting malaria to claim many lives. Foot thick walls protected the new lighthouse from the constant lashings of stormy seas, but storms can brew from within walls as well as from without.

St. Simons Light contained two apartments housing the keeper and his assistant. One would think this the ideal solution to the nerve-racking isolation, long hours and dangers of keeping the light, but not for Keeper Fred Osborne and his assistant, John Stevens.

Osborne was so meticulous in his care of the light that when word went out for an assistant, very few men applied for the position. Osborne finally hired John Stevens, and although he trained him, Stevens never completely won Osborne’s trust. Stevens befriended Osborne’s wife, sending Osborne into a jealous rage.

During a fight, each man pulled a gun, and Stevens mortally wounded Osborne. He rushed Osborne to a mainland hospital, insisted it was an accident and returned to tend the unmanned light. When Osborne died the sheriff questioned Stevens further, and allowed him to return to the light until his trial, or they found a replacement. Stevens claimed self-defense and all charges were dropped.

Suddenly keepers, locals and visitors reported hearing strange sounds. When Keeper Carl Svendsen’s wife reported hearing footsteps, he dismissed her claim as the price of loneliness and isolation, yet he too heard them. While setting the dinner table, Mrs. Svenden heard the door open, but instead of her husband, she felt an eerie cold that frightened her and her dog.

Could Osborne, still not trusting anyone, continue to perform his keeper’s duties?

Collecting Antique Axes

Edge tools are among the earliest tool forms, with surviving primitive axes dated to 8000 B.C.. Early axes were made by “wrapping” the red hot iron around a form, yielding the eye of the axe. The steel bit, introduced in the 18th century, was laid into the fold at the front and hammered into an edge. The side opposite the bit was later extended into a poll, for better balance and to provide a hammering surface.

The handles took on a variety of shapes, some indicative or origin, others relating to function. The length of the handle had more to do with the arc of the swing that was required. Felling axes took a full swing and therefore needed the longest handles. Early axes have their handles fitted through the eye from the top down and the handles remain in place by locking into the taper of the eye, so they can be removed for sharpening.

Later axes, however, have their handles fit through the eye from the bottom up, and have a wedge driven in from the top. This permanently locks the handle to the axe and was much preferred by American woodsmen. Many axes found today had been discarded because the handle was split or broken off. In most cases they can be bought at a fraction of their value and, with another handle, can be restored to their original condition. Most axe collectors have a stock of older flea-market handles that they use for this restoration. Like plane blades, axe handles might have been replaced two or three times throughout the life of the tool. As long as the handle is “proper,” meaning, the right shape and length for its function, it won’t detract that much from its value.

Pricing of antique axes runs the entire gamut from a few dollars to several hundred. Examples of well-made axes would include the Plumb, White, Kelly, Miller and numerous others. Beyond these were axes of sometimes lesser quality, but built to a price, and sold by the thousands. Exceptional examples might include handmade axes, possibly from the local blacksmith, or from a factory that specialized in the handmade article, regardless of price.

There are several types of axes out there such as:

SINGLE BIT FELLING AXE:

This axe is considered the workhorse of the axe family. It is a simple design, varying from a 2 ½ lb. head used by campers to the 4 ½ to 7 lb. head used for forest work. There are heads used in lumbermen’s competition that are up to 12lbs.. With the advent of the two-man crosscut saw, and later the power chain saw, tree no longer are taken down by axes. The axe is more a utility tool for clearing branches off the downed tree, and splitting firewood.

DOUBLE BIT FELLING AXE:

Double bit axes always have straight handles, unlike any other modern axe. Almost all axe handles are hickory. Hickory has both strength and spring, and was found very early to be the best for axe handles. Starting in the late 1800’s a number of axe manufactures adopted intricate logos that were embossed or etched on the head of the axe. Almost 200 different styles have been identified to date and these have also become an interesting collectible.

BROAD AXE:

The broad axe is not as common as the felling axe, and is a lot larger. It’s purpose was to square up logs into beams. It used a much shorter swing that the felling axe, therefore required a much shorter handle. The identifying feature of many of these axes is the chisel edge, that allowed the back side of the axe to be dead flat. Because of that, it posed a problem of clearance for the hands. To keep the hands from being scraped, the handle was canted or swayed away from the flat plane of the axe. This is the feature that should always be looked for when buying a broad axe. If the edge is chisel-sharpened, then the handle should be swayed. As with the felling axe, the broad axe heads have a variety of patterns, mostly a result of geographical preference.

GOOSEWING AXE:

The goose wing axe is one of the most artistic looking tools out there, and it takes it’s name from its resemblance to the wing of a goose in flight. It functions exactly as the chisel-edged broad axe, except that the American version has the handle socket more heavily bent or canted up from the plane of the blade. These axes are large and difficult to forge. Many show cracks and repairs and an original handle is rare. Signed pieces, particularly by American makers, mostly Pennsylvania Dutch, are considerably more valuable. Also of importance is the difference in value between American and European axes, the American ones being worth considerably more. A few well-known 19th century American makers whose names appear imprinted on axes are Stohler, Stahler, Sener, Rohrbach, Addams, and L.& I.J. White.

SHIPWRIGHT’S OR MAST AXE:

This axe is used for shaping ships’ masts and timbers, and is usually ground on both sides. It varies in length base on local usage. The double pointed ears or lugs are common with this axe.

COOPER’S AXE:

This axe has a lighter handle socket, well canted and carries a very short handle. Although the general differentiation between an axe and a hatchet is that an axe is used with two hands and a hatchet with one, the cooper’s axe is one of the exceptions to the rule. It was used mostly for shaping barrel staves, and was almost always used with one hand while the other held the stave.

COACHMAKER’S AXE:

This is an asymmetrical axe used for shaping coach parts in almost a paring manner. The heads vary in size, some styles taking on a “bearded” effect, hence the nickname “bearded axe.” These axes are almost exclusively of European origin.

ICE AXE:

Back in the day, ice was harvested in the winter from ponds and lakes and stored in ice-housed for summer use. This was an important winter cash crop for many farmers. There was a whole family of tools developed to serve this industry, among them was the ice axe. Again, local patterns create a variety of styles.

FIRE AXE:

These are sought-after collectibles, because many of the older ones have the fire company’s monogram on the head. All have rear pikes used for clearing openings or creating ventilation.

MORTISING AXE:

The blade on these axes are long and narrow to accommodate the size of the mortise hole it was designed to cut, most often for post and beam construction or for post and rail. Some have double bits, one bit sized for the length and the other for the width of the hole.

TRADE AXE:

Trade axes were originally brought over by the French and Spanish and later by the English and were traded to the Indians who held them in very high regard. They were poll-less and small enough to be carried at the belt and used with one hand. The larger variety were known as squaw axes and were used by the women for chopping wood.

TURF or BOG AXE:

Used for cutting turf and peat, these axes are not heavy enough to cut wood.

HATCHET:

Hatchets are small axes used with one hand.

Hymen and Virginity: A Social Humiliation

Nature discerns individuals of all the species enduring on the planet earth either as male or female who live together for a shorter time span or for a life time partaking in building up of a population by courtship and mating. Both male and female individuals are well-appointed with an exceedingly advanced reproductive system that becomes fairly intricate and condensed in females in comparison to males as females bear the child load in their wombs. Although females play a vivacious role in raising a child from birth till adulthood they face copious hardhips some are known and some unknown. In the human society life of a female undergoes incredible prompt changes since she is a little child. Life becomes radically multifaceted with every step as she grows further reaching adulthood. Her life experiences an abrupt turn right after marriage when her husband asks her “Are you a virgin?”.

Everyday millions of girls face analogous circumstances and at times conditions are so deteriorated that they are abused badly by their partners making the survival a burning hell. Nobody asks this question to a male who has slept with so many girls before marriage. Virginity is a very punitive social dishonor that has poisoned the minds of our societies throbbing the lives of girls. From where does this question of virginity crops up? The answer to this question is existence of a very elusive membranous structure “HYMEN” which is torn during sexual intercourse releasing a fluid allied to blood. Is it true that hymen makes a female a virgin? What if a female lacks hymen? Does it really breaks? There are plenty of such questions that frequently crawl in the minds of males and even some females. Inadequate knowledge, societal and cultural myths have actually hidden the truth lying between hymen and virginity.

The Hymen

The word ‘hymen’ is derived from a Greek signifying a membrane as well as the Greek god of marriage where science calls it a very gentle membrane covering the vaginal opening of a female that may or may not be shed off during the first sexual intercourse. Since times immemorial many cultures accentuate that a female experiences pain when during her first sexual intercourse as her hymen is broken. Some also believe that an examination must be carried out to detect hymen in order to ascertain whether a female is a virgin or not. However, many others believe bleeding occurs when hymen is shed off. It can be easily envisaged that new husbands are well pleased to see the bloody sheets right after having first sexual intercourse with their wives. From the scientific viewpoint hymen is not the key indicator of virginity of a female.

The anatomy of hymen exposes that it is an insubstantial tissue effusively or moderately adjoining the external vaginal opening creating a part of vulva forming altered shapes in different females but mostly crescentic in children. Sexual intercourse and parturition (child birth) contrarily affect hymen for instance, if hymen is elastic it may recuperate its original position while in other cases only fragments are accessible or it may also wane after recurrent penile penetration. A disease, an injury, medical examination, masturbation or any physical exercise may cast their undesirable shadow on this fragile membrane condemning the belief that it is pointer of virginity. Glaister Keen rod can ascertain the presence and degree of hymen rift.

Development of genital tract inaugurates from third week of gestation period to the second trimester where hymen conceals vagina of female fetus. Urorectal septum is formed separating the rectum from urogenital sinus in the seventh week. Müllerian ducts reach the urinogenital sinus forming uterovaginal canal joining the urinogenital sinus in the ninth week. Hymen of the newborn babies is pale pink, thick and redundant due to action of mother’s hormones which continues till the age of 2-4 years as infant’s body produces its own hormones making their hymenal opening annular. With further advancement of age hymen becomes thin, smooth, delicate as well as translucent becoming very sensitive to touch and liable to be ruptured. Later, diameter of hymenal opening amplifies approximately 1 mm every year which at puberty can be further inflated by tampon, pelvic examinations, physical activity or sexual intercourse. It is clear that once a girl reaches puberty the hymen becomes very elastic. A survey signpost that only 43% females underwent bleeding during first sexual intercourse signifying that hymen of majority of females is satisfactorily eclectic.

Hymenal opening procures different shapes in prepubescent girls proposing that it is austerely under hormonal control and life style where most common shape is crescentic. Estrogen and activity levels can make hymenal tissue thicker after puberty. In cases of rape or child sexual abuse, examination of hymen can be steered. Torn hymen heals hastily in younger children. After child birth vaginal opening often shows hymenal tags labeled as parousintroitus.

Hypoplasia, canalization defects, lateral fusion and failure of resorption cause various complications detrimental to the female reproductive system. Imperforate hymenal opening entails minor surgery if it fails to become perforated at puberty as it precludes escape of menstrual fluid. Cribriform or microperforate hymenal opening carries very small openings however, septate one bears countless tissue bands. Some cultures exceedingly value intact hymen at marriage as gage of virginity. Some women undertake hymenplasty to reinstate their dented hymen to verify they are virgins.
