Synthetic Lawn Installation Guide

Here are the proper steps to install a synthetic lawn for your home:

1. Excavating: Standard operating procedure for the installation of a residential synthetic lawn is to first excavate the area to a depth of 3 ½ to 4 inches. If there is a irrigation system in the way, most companies will cap it off or redirect your water for free. Removing the soil should also be part of the installation cost. If you do not need any excavation, a per square foot price reduction should apply.

2. Install Bender Board: The top bender board is manufactured completely from recycled materials. The board should be waterproof and won’t split, chip or rot. It should measure 3 ½ by 1½, not 3 ½ by ¾. Installing the plastic bender board around the entire perimeter is the best way to go about it. This provides a secure edge for the installers to staple the grass to. The synthetic grass installation team should use galvanized staples placed at three inch intervals.

Some synthetic grass installers will only put bender board where there are no existing concrete borders, such as the soft landscape areas that border flower beds. However, this does not ensure that tripping hazards will not evolve or that bugs and insects will not burrow under the edges that are without bender board. This short-cut may save their company time and money but it is not best practice.

Some installers will use wooden stakes to secure the bender board. This is fine when the bender board is up against concrete boarders such as driveways and sidewalks because ultimately it will be pinned in place between the compacted substrate and existing concrete. However, wood is a material that will rot. Therefore, you should make sure that the installation team use plastic stakes, not wooden stakes, out in the soft landscape areas, otherwise, the wooden stakes will rot over time and the bender board may capsize and destroy your synthetic lawn.

Most companies guarantee their installation for five years. It may take five years plus for the wooden stakes to rot and you could end up paying for the repairs yourself. Again, the bender board and stakes should be part of the installation cost.

3. Install Substrate: Most companies will use crushed granite, which will be deposited, raked out and compacted to 100% compaction. The granite will provide excellent drainage for your lawn. The crushed granite should be installed in such a way that there is a slight crown in the middle which ensures proper water run-off. Some companies use two inches or more of base rock and top it off with decomposed granite. In fact, this is how pathways in parks are constructed.

The problem with this method is that the decomposing granite continues to harden over time. Artificial grass installed over decomposed granite feels like a carpet set over pavement. The crushed granite remains firm but never hardens, which results in a more natural feel. Crushed granite is an expensive material, which is why so few companies use it.

4. Synthetic Grass: Let’s begin with some basic info on the synthetic grass itself. Synthetic lawns are basically large carpeted areas. In fact, there are only seven manufacturers of synthetic lawns in the United States and six of them are located in Dalton, Georgia, (the carpet capital of the United States).

The synthetic grass comes in 15′ rolls and has a variety of backings. The best backing is made from polyolefin. It is also know as Duroflo. It has a number of advantages over the more commonly used urethane backings: it is completely permeable throughout, rather than relying on holes punched into the backing for drainage, which can become clogged. It also functions as a weed barrier, which the hole punch variety can not guarantee. Finally, the backing and grass fibers are 100% recyclable. Synthetic turf using urethane backings are not.

5. Synthetic Lawn Installation: The installers will roll out the synthetic lawn and install it with some of the same tools that a carpet layer uses. They will custom cut and fit the lawn to the designated areas as they go using carpet knifes and carpet kickers. The perimeter will be stapled in place with pneumatic staple guns and galvanized staples. The area in the middle, known as the field, will be anchored in place with six inch galvanized foundation spikes placed at one foot centers.

Some companies use u-shaped ground hooks to anchor the grass down. These wire u-hooks are most commonly used to hold drip system tubing in place. They are easy to put in but unfortunately they also come out easily. They are very thin and they are not galvanized so consequently they will rust away over time. They will not last for the lifetime of your lawn. Companies use them because they cost about three cents a piece which is about ten percent of the cost of the foundation spikes.

6. Blooming: Once the lawn is in place, the installers will use power brooms to ‘bloom’ the fibers to get them to stand up straight. If you have purchased a no-fill product, this is the final step. If not, the installers will fill in between the blades with sand and a top coat of rubber granules made from recycled tires.

A word about infill: it can be messy. It gets in your shoes and if you have kids, it will get in their shoes and clothes. If you have any pets, it will get their paws. Water and wind move it around. It migrates. The reason no-fill products don’t need it is because that have more blades per square inch and they also have an additional thatch layer which lives between the backing and about half way up the length of the blades.

Once your lawn is installed, the only tools you will need to maintain it is a nylon rake, which the synthetic grass company should provide, and a leaf blower.

The Differences Between OE OEM and OES Parts

OE: Original Equipment:  This part is either made by the car manufacture or is made by an automotive part supplier and is branded with the car manufactures logo and/or in the car manufactures box.

Car manufacturers do not make all their parts that they put on their vehicles during assembly or repair, they contract out to auto part manufactures to make parts for them. For the most part the car manufacturer makes the body, frame and major engine components the rest they ‘farm out’ to OEM/OES manufacturers. The car manufacturer provides the specifications to the OEM/OES manufactures for the parts they need. The OEM/OES manufactures the part to these specs, adds a logo and ships it to the car manufacture.

Bosch, Bilstien, Boge, Beru, Mann, ATE, to name a few, are all OEM or OES suppliers to the car manufacturers. They make parts from spark plugs to exhaust parts. The difference between OE and OEM/OES is mainly the OEM/OES usually don’t have the car manufactures logo, but they are the same exact part. Sometimes the logo is ground off the part by the OEM/OES company so as not to affect there contract with the car manufacture. Same part coming off the same assembly line as the OE part does.

The OEM/OES parts are less expensive because they do not go through the car manufactures part system. Every time an OE part goes through a depot, warehouse, dealer, there is a little more money added to the cost of the part. This is the major reason that OE parts cost more. OEM/OES do not go through this procedure, our buyers get them directly from the manufactures, keeping the prices down.  

Aftermarket: aftermarket parts are just that, aftermarket. They are not made by the car manufacturers. They can be made by one of the original equipment manufacturer companies or by a completely different manufacturer. The main difference is they are not made completely to the car manufacture specifications. This is not always bad. One example is Bilstien. They are an OEM/OES supplier, but they offer aftermarket parts also. There HD struts/shocks are original equipment, but their Sport struts/shocks and suspension kits are not made to OE specifications, better but not OE, so it’s now an aftermarket part. Another example is the Stewart EMP BMW water pumps. Stewart EMP is NOT an OEM/OES manufacturer but the pump they make is better and stronger than OE. It is an aftermarket part but a better part altogether.  

But still another example of an aftermarket BAD part is a counterfeit part. Counterfeit part manufacturers use backward engineering to get the specifications of the part without paying the car manufacturer. And almost all the time these parts are made with very low quality components. Sometimes these parts are very hard to identify because a lot of emphasis is put on the look and feel of the part and not what it is made from. One way to identify an counterfeit part is its unbelievable low price, the old adage you get what you pay for fits here. The best way to avoid these cheap low quality parts is to purchase your parts from a reliable source, one that offers a warranty and return policy.

Almost all Performance parts are aftermarket parts, again be careful with these parts also. Buy from a reputable supplier or/or manufacturer.  

Things You Need to Know About LED 2835, 3014 and 3528 – An Introduction to LED Packaging

LED lighting is characterized not only by consuming lesser amounts of energy in exchange for greater output, but also by having a longer life-span than other technical and technological solutions. Today we’re going to focus on the packaging process of LED 2835, 3014 and 3528.

Before we delve into details, it’s important to discuss a couple of technical terms. SMD LED stands for ‘surface mount LED’. The manufacturing process involves mounting the chip onto a small desk-like surface which eventually becomes an LED.

The packaging process consists of three steps:

1. Mounting the chip onto a desk with the use of adhesives

2. Connecting the chip to the core system with a bond wire

3. Coloring the chip with a phosphor-based color.

For better understanding on how the naming system works, there is a simple rule to be followed. It’s rather straightforward: each packaging process is named after its respective LED product dimensions. For example, ‘3528’ means the product dimensions are 3.5*2.8mm.

The packaging processes of 2835, 3014 and 3528 are all based on Epistar and chips of similar dimensions. Generally speaking, SMD 2835’s design is newer and more advanced than that of 3014 and 3528.

2835’s thermal dissipation system is substantially more efficient, because it has a larger heat sink on the back than the 3014 does and 3528 has no back heat sink at all. This enables 2835 LED to take higher amounts of current and generate more luminous flux.

1. The larger the chip, the better

If we take the 3528 as an example, its manufacturer could use a chip of either 10*16, 10*18 or 10*23 in dimensions in order to produce the LED. Although all of the three can be driven by 20ma, they each generate different luminous flux.

However, most of the lamp buyers will have a very hard time knowing the chip’s actual brand and dimensions, and the only real way for them to find out is to subject the lamp to an optical performance test.

2. A controversial design

Higher drive currents will produce more luminous flux and heat inside a chip.3528, 3014 and 2835 all use the 10*23mm chip, but the drive currents are different. It is controversial in the sense that although 3014 and 2835 have a larger heat sink, one chip in these packagings could be driven by higher currents. Still, it has become the most popular design by far.

Reading Strategies Good Readers Use

A few years ago, educational researchers David Pearson and Nell Duke asked the question, “What kind of thinking happens when proficient readers read?” This question led to ground breaking research results that have changed the way teachers teach children to read.

They discovered seven key strategies that good readers use during the reading process. Innovative teachers teach the strategies directly using metacognitive thinking (thinking out loud about your thinking) by modeling their own thinking out loud during the reading process. Students apply the new strategies by practicing their own thinking orally and in writing. Books like Mosaic of Thought by Zimmerman and Keene, Strategies that Work by Harvey and Goudvis, and Reading with Meaning by Miller explore these ideas in great depth and apply best teaching practices to teaching reading strategies.

Strategy One: Making Connections

Readers bring their own experiences and background knowledge to the text. They make personal connections, they connect one text with another, and make connections with the world. These connections enrich the text and helps the reader to understand the text at a higher level of meaning. Teachers teach these connections directly: text to self connections, text to text connections, and text to world connections.

Strategy Two: Visualizing or Envisioning

Readers see pictures in their minds when they read. The best part of reading is watching the “movie in your head.” Good readers experience seeing strong visual images. Children can be taught to visualize as they read. Often poor readers do not “see” when they read. We live in a visual world, yet it’s the visuals that many readers lack when they read.

Strategy Three: Questioning

Readers are constantly questioning, predicting, confirming their thinking, and adjusting their thinking. Good readers have a purpose for continuing to read. The purpose lies within their ability to question and predict throughout the reading of the text. The adjustments made helps readers to understand the text at a deeper level. Their basic and deeper comprehension soars when their minds are constantly making meaning through questioning.

Strategy Four: Inferring

Good readers read between the lines. The answers are not always black and white, and good readers are able to infer meaning based on background knowledge and text clues. When a reader is inferring they are thinking, predicting, adjusting, and confirming. This leads to deeper understanding of the text.

Strategy Five: Determining Importance

Good readers understand the main ideas of a text and can determine what is important. Readers are answering questions, determining key points, and stretching their thinking as they connect the important ideas with their own knowledge.

Strategy Six: Synthesizing

Good readers are able to synthesize their reading and produce their own ideas or products from their knowledge. Synthesizing is a higher order thinking skill that requires you to reach beyond basic knowledge and create new thinking.

Strategy Seven: Fix-Up Strategies

Good readers know how to tackle difficult text. If they run across a word they don’t know they chunk the word and use context clues to determine the meaning. If the just finished a paragraph and don’t have a clue as to what they just read, they reread the paragraph and focus on thinking about its’ meaning. They identify what they don’t understand and read back or ahead to try and clarify meaning. They look at pictures or other text features (like graphs or sidebars) to help them understand the concepts or ideas. Fix-up strategies can be directly taught to help students break down a piece of text and find its’ meaning.

These strategies are often taught separately, but they must be integrated and automated in the reader’s mind. Once students are aware of these strategies and learn to apply them during their own reading process they begin to become an automatic part of their thinking. The strategies help readers to understand text and gain meaning by applying their own background knowledge or schema, as well as understanding the author’s message.

His Most Famous Painting (Metropolis) – Otto Dix

Famous Expressionist painter, Otto Dix (1891-1969), was born in Unternhaus, Germany. After finishing elementary school he went on to work locally as an apprentice and then in 1910 joined the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts. While his early works were ‘Expressionist’ & colorful, the World Wars and their aftermaths had majorly influenced Otto’s later strong works. The most significant influencer was his experience as a machine gunner in the German army during World War I. Many of Dix’s post war paintings show what Germany looked like in the 1920s, a reality not everyone was comfortable looking at. Dix’s grotesque depiction shocked most of German society, following the war. Two subjects he particularly focused on were soldiers crippled, killed, and forgotten in the war and the large number of prostitutes spread all over German cities, with the revelers having optimal fun. His most famous painting is the triptych “Metropolis” (1928), depicting the major elements of the German society post the World War I.

The left-hand panel of “Metropolis” depicts a crippled war soldier entering a poor area of Berlin and welcomed by a line of prostitutes beckoning. A man, probably a soldier is shown lying dead on the street. The central panel of the painting shows the prosperity of the city in the so-called German “Golden Twenties,” influenced by American jazz and dance. The right panel of the creation reflects flashy and classy prostitutes searching for clients in the more affluent parts of the city, depicted by the elaborate architecture. Therefore, the two side panels of the painting reflect the contrasts coexisting in German society at the same time.

Following the war, Dix’s paintings had become increasingly political and reflected his anger on the manner in which war wounded and crippled soldiers were treated in Germany. His paintings, such as “War Cripples” (1920), “Butcher’s Shop” (1920), and “War Wounded” (1922) reflected his views clearly. Dix spent six years on what are regarded as two of his famous pieces of art, “Metropolis” (1928) and “Trench Warfare” (1932). He painted several portraits of prostitutes either in the brothels or on the street. “The Salon” is one of the more famous of his representations of prostitutes. Dix’s creations splashed the shocking aspects of German society on canvas. To add, no one could miss out the significant intricacies of the realities behind his creations. He also started doing portraiture that focused on the worse traits and the weaknesses of his sitters, irrespective of the class of society they came from. Otto Dix died in Singen, Germany, in 1969, but not before he had given the world extraordinary creations such as the “Metropolis,” which presently graces Galerie der Stadt, Stuttgart, Germany.

Your Murano Glass – Has It Really Been Made in Venice?

Murano glass has been made in Murano since the late 13th century – 1291 AD to be exact. With so many fakes on the market, how do you know that your Murano Glass is 100% authentic? When you look back in history, glass blowing in Italy in fact dates right back to the 7th century but it’s real popularity and the beginning of its immense worldwide reputation for artistic brilliance and sheer beauty really began in 1291. The then King of Italy was so concerned that the increasing number of furnaces operating on Murano would become a threat to the city, as almost all of the houses and buildings were made from wood. The King then made a royal decree that all furnaces must be relocated to Venice to protect the city from the threat of fire.

Shortly after this, the word about the incredible glass being made on Murano began to filter out to the rest of the world. The King then became concerned that the secrets and incredible reputation that Murano Glass had achieved around the world might leave the island. So the King then banned all travel to and from the Island of Murano to protect this incredible asset and the incredible world of glass that is Murano was born.

The Chinese in particular have seized on this and have attempted to tap into this incredible market by producing fakes in astonishing numbers. So let me now give you some tips on how to ensure that the glass you are buying is indeed 100% authentic and made in Venice.


Ask for the VAM or Vetreria Artistica Murano certification number of the company who produced the item you are looking at purchasing. Not all furnaces on Murano carry this certification.


Genuine Murano glass has a clarity and sheer artistic presence that is unmistakable. Cheap Chinese fakes are clumsily made, lack any depth of colour and are quite often lighter in weight than authentic Murano glass pieces.


Look for the Pontil mark on the base. All Murano glass will either have a distinctive ground Pontil mark. Ground flat bases are generally not Murano although again, this is not always the case.


ALL authentic Murano glass will carry either a label, diamond etched signature if made by a Studio artist such as Gianluca Vidal. Beware of items that carry acid etched signatures as these can sometimes be faked also.


Get to know the styles and production methods used by Murano glass makers such as Avventurine, Sommerso, Filigrana, Latticino etc. Only by handling or viewing authentic Murano glass, will you get to know what is right and what is wrong when it comes to identifying the fakes.


Look for distinctive expansion lines or bubbles on the glass. These lines are created as the glass is worked and expanded under heat leaving distinctive lines in the glass similar to what you would see in a tree trunk.


Almost all the cheap mass-produced glass made in China especially jewellery and beads are all made in molds so the visible expansion lines simply aren’t visible due to being mass-produced.


Items made anywhere else but in Murano Venice or mainland Italy are SIMPLY NOT MURANO GLASS. Only items that have been produced in Murano Italy are the real deal. No Murano glass is made in China so everybody based in China stating they are selling lots of 4000 Murano glass beads for 700 USD or so is IMPOSSIBLE. To give you some sort of guide, if the 4000 beads were indeed genuine and indeed made in Murano, you would need to consider 2 factors. The style and technique used to make the beads in question, and the size and complexity of the design. i can safely assure you that if these were genuine, a base price for these if they were made in Murano would be from $4000 USD upwards – this is the very bare minimum so you can see what I mean.
