Fishing Strip Pits, Fishing Grave Pits

I already know what your thinking, warm weather and clear water! Indiana Gravel and Strip pit fishing.

Fishing these pits can be very frustrating, and sometimes almost impossible. All of us have been skunked at one time or another. I’ll provide you with what I’ve learned by fishing these areas.

First you need to learn the lay-out of a pit. Strip pits have very direct drop-offs and high vertical banks from where they blasted out the land. Most of these have been re-claimed and fish spawning areas have been added (shallow water). In these pits they just took a big scoop shovel after blasting and loaded the coal into trucks. Sometimes you can find an old roadbed where the loaded trucks came in and out of the pit.

Anything different can hold fish. Underwater structure, points, pockets in the weeds.

Gravel pits are often deep (can be shallow), and if you look around you can probably guess where the roads went down into and out of these pits. These old roadbeds are prime structure for big Indiana bass. Don’t forget that points, weed lines, pockets are also good areas. Keep these areas in mind when your fishing these pits.

To get on with the basic’s. All the pro’s will tell you to downsize your lures and use the lightest line you can get by with. That’s alright if your wanting to catch lots of small fish, but if your looking for quality fish use Muskie size lures! Sure, you won’t catch as many fish, but the ones you will catch will be quality fish instead of all the dinks.

Sound and vibrations can make a bid difference. One night bass fishing while I fished a spinnerbait for more than an hour, I got it hung up in a tree and lost the blade. Being to lazy to walk back for a new bait, I started tossing it out without the blade and the fish loved it! I never have caught a bass on a spinnerbait in that lake.

Try night fishing for bass. At night you can use floating baits such as the Rapala and have lots of success. If your catching to many small ones switch to bigger baits. At night I’ll be out prowling the banks searching for active fish. Pre-rigged worms rigged wacky style are excellent baits. I’ll also use a 6 to 12 inch Texas rigged worm with the sinker pegged to throw into tree’s, limbs, and other obvious structure. Remember to hit the old roadbeds, bass will use them as a highway when they get the urge to feed.

Basically the only two colors of lures I use at night are black or white, just what-ever the fish like the best. Crappie and pan fishing in Indiana gravel and strip pits. The crappie disperse after spawning and can be found along weed lines and downed structure. You’ve really got to be sneaky as all fish in clear waters spook very easy. Best bait to use is a bobber and minnows.

Live bait is an excellent choice of baits for all fish. Use minnows for bluegill and bass, shiners for bass, small live bluegill or goldfish for flathead catfish, and live shad, creek chubs for Muskie. Muskie are stocked in some lakes.

Night time fishing is a plus, and use big baits. No matter what it is, use big baits for Muskie!

Over-all, fishing at night can improve your odds of catching big Indiana bass, big Indiana Muskie, big Indiana walleye, big bull bluegill and slab crappie.. Just remember that fish can spook very easy in clear water! If bank fishing walk softly and keep a low profile!

The Upper Lip Lift – Shortening a Long Upper Lift Without Complications

The upper lip may get longer as one ages in some people. For others, they have a naturally long upper lip when gets more so with age. A long upper lip associated with a thin vermilion can be cosmetically treated through skin removal.

One option for shortening a long upper lip is a lip lift. With this technique, the skin is taken high up under the nose and the upper lip skin is shortened as the remaining skin is pulled upwards. This will leave a residual fine line scar along the base of the nose and only the central lip will have more fullness or pout. It is always slightly over-corrected as there will be some relaxation (mild re-lengthening) of the upper lip afterwords.

While this is a fairly simple procedure, complications have been reported from it. One complication appears to come from sewing the underlying orbicularis oris muscle up as well as the skin, presumably for better long-term stability. However, such a maneuver creates an unnatural stiffness and deformity of the upper lip as the orbicular muscle is somewhat restricted from acting like its natural sphincter. It is far better to run the inconsequential risk of doing a secondary tuck-up of the procedure if there has been some relapse.

Abnormal scarring has also been reported. This appears to come from an effort to hide the scars inside the nostrils. This sounds theoretically beneficial but that causes distortion of the nostril sill and enlargement of the nostril opening. Secondary correction of the nostril is difficult. This is not a good trade-off given that subnasal scars generally heal quite well.

Changes in the shape of the nostril can be caused by being pulled downward from removing too much skin (a few extra millimeters is all that it takes) underneath the nostril. This is why the cutout is wavy or bullhorn-shaped with the greatest amount taken centrally between the philtrums. Since skin can not be replaced, secondary correction can be attempted by a modification of the inner alar wedge technique.

Upper lip lifts can be a very satisfying procedure but it is important to not try and take too much skin or do modifications of the procedure that interfere with the natural nostril sill. In my Indianapolis plastic surgery practice, I take a central 4 -5 mms of skin removal whose pattern tapers out to the lateral alar rim. This approach produces consistent results with negligible risks of any of the aforementioned complications.

The Great Gatsby – Is Nick Carraway Gay?

In The Great Gatsby Scott Fitzgerald presents a study of wealth and ambition through the prism of pathetic characters for which one can find almost no socially redeeming values.

What The Great Gatsby portrays is the sordid story of small band of feeble characters engaged in cheating, adultery, deception, and debauchery. The lavish parties -Jazz-age style- that Jay Gatsby throws to recover Daisy Buchanan (his lost illusions and perfidious lover) are all but wild bacchanalians.

When one thinks about of the rest of the nation, we can breathe a sigh of relief to see that the rest of Americans are engaged in productive enterprise, in rebuilding the nation after the waste of resources that was the First World War. The sordidness of the story applies, almost in its entirety, to that small band of marginal, misguided, and unsavory characters. It isn’t a book about the spiritual dismemberment of America (as many have interpreted the book to be) that came in 1927 with the Great Depression.

While in Ernest Hemingway’s short story “The Killers” we experience the objective voice of a disinterested narrator, in the Great Gatsby we are deceived by the relentless biases of Nick Carraway, a likable character –and narrator– who not only has an interesting story to tell, but also has an agenda. His agenda is a laundry list of things “to clean up,” events to smooth over, and a guilty consciousness to cleanse. In a similar vein as the Confessions penned by Augustine, Rousseau, and Ben Franklin, Nick exacerbates other people’s crimes and misdemeanors while obscuring and diminishing his own.

From the outset of the narration, Nick Carraway makes it clear that the story he’s about to tell is a very personal story, and that he is going to be a protagonist. So, with these words: “In my younger and more vulnerable years…” he begins to tell the story about himself and about young people coming of age, people who at present are in the midst of finding their own identity, groping for goals and a more certain future. It is a generational story in which ambitious Dough Boys-having returned from fighting a world war–vie for position under the sun, vying for a spot not in the tedium of poverty or disenchantment, but for a share of splendor in wealth and love.

Although Nick makes the calculated decision to come East to pursue a career in Wall Street, his heart moves him in a different direction; his heart is in literature, and he lets us know what his intentions are: “I was rather literary in college-one year I wrote a series of very solemn and obvious editorials for the Yale News-and now I was going to bring back all such things into my life and become again that most limited of all specialists, the ‘well rounded man.'” (GG, 4).

Having attended Yale University, he is justified in calling himself a ‘well rounded man’ who is fully equipped by experience, education, and talent to become a writer, a literary man.

As he commences the narrative, he even indulges in the author’s pleasure of even knowing the title of his book: “Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction.” (GG, 2). He also engages in moments of meta-narration. When in the second book of Don Quijote the hero learns that he is the subject of spurious adventures by a spurious author, we can only enjoy the pleasures of meta-narration. Nick Carraway also engages himself in bits of meta-narration as when we read that he is reviewing his work as he progresses with the writing:

“Reading over what I have written so far, I see I have given the impression that he events of three nights several weeks apart were all that absorbed me. On the contrary, they were merely casual events in a crowded summer, and, until much later, they absorbed me infinitely less than my personal affairs.” (GG, 56).

Indeed they were but mere casual events, yet very much intertwined with his own personal life. Though Nick presents the Gastby life as the main thread, his own autobiographical strands of data are weaved into the fabric of the story.

While Meursault-Camus’ absurd-man narrator of The Stranger chooses a stark, hallucinatory jargon to depict his alienation from the world, Nick Carraway chooses a lyrical and often incantatory language to embellish the sordid world of a low-level American tragedy.

Nick takes licenses and reports hearsay, a narrator’s sin that endangers his credibility. What is disgusting is that in the end, Nick doesn’t denounce his cousin Daisy, even though he’s privy to the knowledge that Daisy was the driver that fated night, and that Daisy kills Myrtle Wilson (Tom’s mistress). Was this really an accident? Or did Daisy actually run over Mrs. Wilson intentionally? We can only go by Gatsby’s recollection of the accident as he recounts it to Nick.

That Daisy was driving and that she was maneuvering to pass a car coming the other way is clear. What follows is that Daisy first attempts avoid hitting Myrtle, but it is possible that as she recognizes Myrtle she changes her mind and runs over her. After all Myrtle Wilson has been a constant thorn in her flesh throughout the summer, causing her much pain, anxiety, and depression.

While Nick tells us there was an inquest, he omits telling us that he didn’t testify, despite the fact that his truthful testimony would have implicated his cousin Daisy. Nick then is complicit in the cover up of a hit and run crime. Furthermore, the night of the accident when Nick plays peeping Tom, he observes Daisy and Tom in a conspiratorial tete-a-tete:

“The weren’t happy, and neither of them had touched the chicken or the ale-and yet they weren’t unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together.” (GG, 145).

In Garcia Marquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, when Remedios the Beauty ascends to heaven, the reader accepts this fact because the woman in her simple mindedness never sees that her beauty hurts people; or even kills them. But when Nick Carraway paints Daisy as a southern beauty filled with charm and innocence, he scratches a discordant note, for her actions belie that.

Is Nick Gay or Bisexual? Nick has a fixation with noses and we see this under-text surface throughout the narration, and the only way to break the habit is by actually “breaking” it violently just as Tom Buchanan does when he breaks his mistress’s nose. In addition, Daisy compares Nick to a flower: “Nick, you remind me of a–of a rose, an absolute rose.” Is she implying Nick is a closeted gay? Well, Nick never pursues Jordan with the vigor of a male in heat. And there’s a scene in which another male removes his garments.

During a get-together in New York, Nick meets Mr. McKee, a photographer: “Mr. McKee was a pale, feminine man from the flat below. He had just shaved, for there was a white spot of lather on his cheekbone (30).” Afterwards McKee takes Nick to his home where they spend the night. Nick later remembers: “I was standing beside his bed and he was sitting up between the sheets, clad in his underwear.”

To confirm McKee’s homosexuality and by implication Nick’s, we see a phallic image as the elevator boy warns “hands off the lever.” To which McKee responds “I beg your pardon…I didn’t know I was touching it.” Was McKee touching the lever or the elevator boy? Early in the Twentieth Century, American literature had certain taboos that an author could only approach and conquer as the Jew conquered Jericho-around and around and with noise. The noise being the carefully selected word-codes and phallic imagery.

Can anyone imagine a heterosexual man obssessing about another man?:

“Mr. McKee was asleep on a chair with his fists clenched in his lap, like a photograph of a man of action. Taking out my handkerchief I wiped from his cheek the remains of the spot of dried lather that had worried me all the afternoon.” (p.36)

Nick Carraway, the narrator, never acknowledges that he is an amiable pimp. Nick rents his West Egg house with a male, “when a young man at the office suggested that we take a house together in a commuting town, it sounded like a great idea. He found the house, a weather-beaten cardboard bungalow at eighty a month, but at the last minute the firm ordered him to Washington, and I went out to the country alone.” (p3).

If Nick isn’t gay, then he is bisexual: “I even had a short affair with a girl who lived in Jersey City and worked in the accounting department, but her brother began throwing mean looks in my direction, so when she went on her vacation in July I let it blow quietly away.” (p56).

And as he meanders through midtown Manhattan, he fantasizes: “I liked to walk up Fifth Avenue and pick out romantic women from the crowd and imagine that in a few minutes I was going to enter into their lives, and no one would ever know or disapprove. Sometimes, in my mind, I followed them to their apartments on the corners of hidden street, and they turned and smiled back at me before they faded through a door into warm darkness.” (p56).

Notice Nick’s self-examination that carry the despairing musings of old maids, spinsters, and old bachelors: “I was thirty. Before me stretched the portentous, menacing road of a new decade (p135).” As he looks down the lane of bachelorhood at this point in his life, Nick considers a life-presumably a sexual life with single men only: “The Thirty-the promise of a decade of loneliness, a thinning list of single men to know, a thinning briefcase of enthusiasm, thinning hair.” (p135). This is a poignant remark that confirms his loneliness and how he will comfort himself in his bacherlohood.

Nick Carraway presents himself as a simple, unassuming, and likeable character, who thrives in gaining the confidence of friends and strangers alike. Yet, there’s nothing simple about him. As his narrative progresses and we get to know him better, we conclude that he is a complex character with many facets.

While many sides of his personality are interesting, the reader cannot help being seduced by the moralistic preponderance of his judgments. On the surface, Nick presents himself as the voice of measure, reason, and virtue, but as we scrutinize his deeper strata we find an array of wild emotions, impulses, desires, and irrationalities that border on an unstable, sexually confused life, as he himself acknowledges: “Conduct may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marhes, but after a certain point I don’t care what’s founded on.” (GG, 2).

I recently heard from someone who was very interested in the Nutrisystem diet, but she worried that she wouldn’t be able to prepare many of the foods because she didn’t have a microwave. The Breakfast And Snacks: Of all of the food options, the breakfast and snacks are the least likely to need any preparation. The cereals only require your adding milk or fruit. Plus, some of the foods can be reheated in an over or toaster over.

I was sitting with Dr.Alka Srivastava,Head Of Department of Chemistry) at our College. She was sharing various delicacies prepared at her home at Banaras-the Land Of Gods and Banarasi Sarees (Varanasi).She was narrating her childhood experiences at Varanasi and how different kinds of dishes were prepared at her home. I heard the following dishes like Ghujaa, Daal Ka Dulhaa, Matar Nimona, Faraay, etc. That was the beginning for my introduction to the WORLD OF BANARAS FOOD. I started browsing various websites in order to know about these dishes which were exclusively new for me.

I was completely mesmerized by the dish called “DAAL KA DULHAA”.The literal meaning is “THE BRIDEGROOM OF THE LENTILS” (this is the name of the dish and especially prepared from Bengal Gram). The method to prepare it is easily available on some of the blogs on Banarasi food. I was impatient and tried my own hands in its preparation and learnt it. I do not know the reason why it got its name. However, my mind was pondering on something else!

Who can be the BRIDE? Ha ha ha!!! I did my research on various kinds of recipes illustrated in different blogs on Recipes or Cuisine of Banaras. I learnt about the basic ingredients and style of the cuisine-both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. I was restless till the time I discovered and prepared my own dish in BANARASI STYLE and called it “TAMATAR NIMONA KI DULHAN”. In this article, I would be showcasing the details of the ingredients and method to prepare this new dish.

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

SEASONING

  1. Panch Phoran-4 Tablespoons
  2. Asoefitida-1 Teaspoon
  3. Coriander Powder-1 Teaspoon
  4. Chilli Powder-1 Teaspoon
  5. Garam Masala-1 Teaspoon
  6. Cumin Seeds-1/2 Teaspoon
  7. Carom Seeds

MATERIALS REQUIRED

  1. Bengal Gram -1/2 Cup
  2. Tomatoes- 8
  3. Fresh Coriander Leaves-6 Twigs
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Wheat Flour-3 Cups
  6. Water for kneading
  7. Oil

METHOD

Knead the flour by adding sufficient salt and carom seeds with the help of the water. Cover the dough with the wet cloth and leave it for an hour.After an hour, prepare small balls of the dough and roll out small sized pancakes of diameter 10 cm.

Soak the Bengal gram in water for 8 hours. Wash it with the fresh water and grind it in the coarse form. Add chilli powder,salt and cumin seeds. Mix it well with hands. Take a small portion of it and place it into the above prepared pancakes. Slowly lift the four corners of the pancake and prepare the dumplings. In a similar manner, prepare around 10 to 12 dumplings. One can deep fry these dumplings or use them as it is in this particular dish.

Take a pressure cooker. Add 2 teaspoons of oil into it. Add panch phoran and let the seeds splutter for some time.Lower the gas burner. Cut tomatoes into small pieces and add them to the cooker. Add salt and mix them well. Cover the cooker and let there be 2 whistles. After some time, remove the lid of the cooker and mash the mixture to prepare good tomato puree. Sieve it through a muslin cloth or the siever. Take a deep wok, add 1 teaspoon of oil and cumin seeds. Lower the gas burner and slowly add the tomato puree. Add chilli powder, garam masala powder and coriander powder. Let it cook for some time. Later on, place the dumplings into the mixture and cook for another 15 minutes.Add ¼ cup of water in case it is required in the preparation.This is how one can prepare the dish called TAMATAR KA NIMONA KI DULHAN.

Whenever I plan for a thematic lunch or dinner in the Banarasi style, I make it a point that these two dishes viz. DAAL KA DULHAA and TAMATAR NIMONA KI DULHAN are always present. This is how I cannot miss my trail of compliments from my guests. They specially like the taste of the tamatar nimona. The flavor is absolutely amazing to one’s taste buds.

Replacing Thermofoil Cabinet Doors

I am a professional cabinet maker. For the past eight years I have carved a niche in the area of repairs and alterations to kitchens and baths. Among the many request for repairs which I receive, replacing thermofoil cabinet doors is high on the list. First let me say that there are two other popular terms used to describe this style of door, MDF and vinyl wrap. There are usually two types of damage that are the most common with this type of door. The vinyl peels away from the board due to excessive heat or the plastic coating begins to loosen because the manufacture didn’t get enough glue on the surfaces of the board when the doors were being made. In both of these cases, the doors are usually beyond repair and must be replaced. Here’s the problem though, many customers have no idea where the actual doors came from. There are literally hundreds of MDF door manufacturing companies scattered throughout the United States and Canada. So, here’s what I do to get around this minor set back. Most of the time if I remove a vinyl wrapped drawer front from the drawer and look on the back side of it, there’s a sticker on it. This label will have the companies name, date of production, door style and color codes on it. Once we have this information we then contact the company to find out if the doors are still under warranty. Some MDF manufactures offer a five year guarantee against discoloration and de-lamination. Please note, heat damaged doors will not be covered with the guarantee. The next step is to request a catalog and color samples. Once these materials arrive we are then able to identify the door style, match the color and order the replacement parts.

Tips for protecting your thermofoil doors against heat damage:

1) Remove the drawers and doors that are next to your oven when you are using the self cleaning feature. When cleaning is in process there is a small amount of extreme heat that escapes through the edges of the oven door. This will melt the plastic and cause it to shrink and curl.

2) Avoid placing deep fryers directly underneath of the upper cabinet doors. Here again the heat will affect the edges.

3) Either pull or push toaster ovens away from the door edges so that the rising heat does not cause any damage to the doors.

A few words about the warranty coverage on thermofoil cabinet doors.

It’s important to know that even though your doors may be replaceable at no cost from the manufacture, you will still have to pay a professional cabinet man to make the exchange. Just as an example, if your cabinet man charges $50 per hour from start to finish the cost of 21′ of uppers and 21′ of base cabinets should cost around five to six hundred dollars. The company who originally made the doors should cover all of the shipping costs. So if the cabinet man says you will have to pay for having the doors shipped, I suggest calling the company directly and finding out for yourself.

Hire A Professional

Replacing thermofoil doors should be done by a professional. So, “don’t try this at home.” If you hire someone to do the work for you, it will save you a lot of time and aggravation in the end. Professional cabinet men have special drilling machines and templates that allow them to produce excellent results when they are replacing MDF doors.

Absolutism In Shakespeare’s Heroes – Othelo, King Lear and Macbeth

Absolutism as a characteristic trait in protagonist was not an unknown concept in English grammar before Shakespeare used it very effectively for character-portrayal. It was none other than Marlowe who made it an important plank for his hero – study in Edward II (written in late 1591 or early 1592).

Steeped in Renaissance culture, Shakespeare saw the vast potentialities of this concept, broadened the scope of its application and projected it as a major component of character-concept in tragedy. We shall make here a study of three great tragic heroes of Shakespeare-Othello, King Lear and Macbeth-to measure the extent of their absolutism and relate it to their tragedy.

Shakespeare’s treats the theme of division of kingdom in King Lear because the ‘horror of a divided kingdom was very great in Elizabethan England and the centring of a tragic hero’s weakness in such a division of England was a common device in Elizabethan drama

Marlowe does not make Edward II a Machiavellian superman like Tamburlaine capable of exercising authority over the body-politic, but Shakespeare’s heroes-Othello, Lear and Macbeth-evince a tendency to acquire, retain or expand power which is Machiavellian in character. In other words, the essence of absolutism in these heroes is a desire for unassailable control and tragedy occurs because there is a yawning hiatus between their desire and reality.

In Macbeth there is a reverse movement: from his failure to exercise control over his own body to his success in acquiring power, gaining control and retaining his hold upon the body-politic (the Scottish kingdom), albeit through bloody and foul means. His speech fails him in the direst moment of his need (after the murder of Duncan), as he ruefully admits to Lady Macbeth:

But wherefore could not I pronounce ‘Amen’?

I had most need of blessing, and ‘Amen’

Stuck in my throat.

Othello begins on a contrary note, with the Moor anxiously striving to establish a substantialist fixity in respect of his militarist credentials. Though there is no question of the abandonment of his primal values in respect of his services to the Venetian State (he goes on the Cyprus campaign even when his marriage is not consummated), there is definitely a clear shift in his loyalties. The valiant soldier who does not mince matters in his early assessment of love as ‘light-wing’d toys/ Of feather’d Cupid’ feels after a spell of separation from his wife during his Cyprus campaign that Desdemona is his ‘soul’s joy’ whereupon he exclaims in the most eloquent superlatives of passion:

Such an anti-life state of the body-politic spawns effective resistance groups which are what Malcolm, Macduff et al form to set things right and uproot the tyrannical usurper. The ruinous end of the usurper is the end-product of his erroneous concept of absolutism, as he gives the idea of the retention of power a warped shape.

But before the end comes (and what an end with the bravura image of Macbeth kept intact despite desertions from his army ranks and despite a sickening ennui gradually enveloping his psyche after all the murder and killing and tyranny!), Macbeth is limned into greatness ruminating upon the futility of his exercise at forced ascendancy:

My way of life

Is fall’n into the sear, the yellow leaf;

And that which should accompany old age,

As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,

I must not look to have; but, in their stead,

Curses not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath,

Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not.

In fact, remorse is the sine qua non of these great tragic protagonists; be it Othello’s unreasoned suspicion, Lear’s arrogance or Macbeth’s unmitigated butchery, each working in tandem with the protagonist’s absolutist tendencies, it is remorse that makes each what he is-a great tragic hero, not a remorseless villain like Iago.

Medicare Supplement Plan J – What’s Happening to it in 2010?

Medicare Supplement Plan J is one of the Federally-standardized Medicare Supplement plans. Much has been written and discussed about the upcoming June 1, 2010 changes to the standard Medicare Supplement plans. One of the major changes with the modernization of the plans is the elimination of several plans, including Medigap Plan J. It is important to note, however, that existing Plan J policyholders will not lose their current Plan J coverage with this modernization of the plans.

In reality, the elimination of Plan J is by default. The two benefits that J has to set it apart from Plan F, the most common Medigap plan, are Preventive Care and At Home Recovery. Those two benefits are being eliminated from all of the plans by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) due to lack of use. The elimination of these benefits means that J is a duplication of F, so it is thereby discarded.

The two benefits that are being abolished were not extremely popular, or frequently used, benefits, anyway. However, in some cases where J was very close in price to F, the J plan has made sense for some Medicare-enrollees.

To reiterate again, existing Plan J policyholders will not be kicked off of their current Plan J coverage or have to leave it. It is important to note, though, that existing Plan J policyholders will be in what is called a “closed” block of business. What this means is that there will be no new J policies sold after that June 1, 2010 date. Some speculate that this will lead to Plan J rates increasing more rapidly on Plan J than on other plans. While this does make logical sense (older policyholders equals more claims equals higher rates), it remains to be seen the true and lasting effect that the removal of Plan J will have on current J policyholders.

The course of action that I recommend, as always, is a careful, unbiased consideration of all options available in your zip code. Unless Plan J is within $10-15 of F (or other higher level plans), it generally will not make sense for you financially, based on the lack of use of the two distinguishing benefits and the uncertain future associated with J.

Surface Protection Issues: How to Remove Adhesive Residue From Carpet

When using adhesive surface protection products on a job site there is always a small risk of adhesive transfer. Improper installation, high temperatures, high traffic, and surpassing the recommended ‘remove by’ date can all result in problems with carpet masks and films. Following are a few recommendations to avoid any adhesive transfer.

  1. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using carpet films. Carpet film usage ratings range from 30 to 60 days. Leaving the film on carpets past the recommended usage rating invalidates all manufacturers’ warranty.
  2. Use films made in the USA for the best warranty protection and highest quality.
  3. Carpet films use either water based or solvent based adhesives. Water based adhesives are easier to remove if a problem occurs.
  4. Never install adhesive carpet protection on wet or damp carpet.
  5. Never install adhesive carpet protection over glue down carpet for a minimum of 72 hours to allow the glue to “breathe”.
  6. If carpet has been installed over a newly poured cement slab that is not fully cured, avoid using adhesive carpet protection as it can trap the cement moisture and discolor the carpet.
  7. In cases of extreme heat, shorten the recommended time of application by 50%.
  8. As stated on the installation instructions of every film manufacturer, there is no warranty offered for application on wool carpets.

If the above steps are taken, the chance of any adhesive transfer when using a carpet film is negligible. In the cases where steps have NOT been followed, one of these two issues may occur: 1) sticky adhesive residue on carpet, or 2) discoloration of carpet where the plastic was used. It is important at this step to know the type of adhesive used, water or solvent based.

Water based adhesive film residue easily removes with warm water and can be quickly removed via steam cleaning the carpets. Solvent based adhesive residue may also be removed via steam cleaning however it may take more than one cleaning to fully remove the adhesive. Citrus cleaners available at any hardware store can sometimes aid in the removal of solvent based adhesive residue. If further problems persist, contact your local surface protection supplier to discuss other potential solutions.

Discoloration of carpet is caused by the trapping of moisture under the film and the subsequent reaction of the moisture and the chemicals in the plastic film. Unfortunately this situation can only be remedied by removal of the affected area of carpet. This situation occurs most commonly in cases where users have carpeted over slabs that were not fully cured.

Update and Reset Your Adtran Netvanta 1224STR

Updating the firmware on an Adtran Netvanta 1224STR PoE switch can seem like a daunting task if you have not done so before. Following these steps will help walk you through the process

**NOTE** If using the enhanced feature pack you will need an Adtran account with valid purchase to validate the download of the enhanced feature pack.

In order to complete this How-To, you will need the following:

  • A computer that has a network connection and a COM port available. If no COM port is available, a USB to COM port adapter may be substituted.
  • A network switch with at least 1 free port for the Netvanta router is preferred, but a crossover cable can also be used.
  • A program you can utilize to console into the router.
  • A TFTP server solution for your computer. You will use this to transfer the firmware to the router.
  • An Adtran serial cable This is a requirement to gain access to the router.

The first thing you should do is download the latest firmware from Adtran. Firmware updates are available on their website. Once you’ve downloaded the firmware you’ll want to install PuTTY and Solarwinds TFTP if you have not already. Move the firmware you’ve downloaded to the TFTP-Root folder located on your computer’s C: Drive. Make sure that Solarwinds TFTP is running.

Connect the serial cable from your computer’s COM port to the Adtran router’s console port. You’ll want to run an RJ45 Cat5 (Ethernet) cable from your router’s Eth 0/1 port to your network switch. Go ahead and take this time to also find out your computer’s IP address. You’ll need this in a few minutes. An easy way to do this is to run the command IPconfig from Window’s Command Prompt. In our case, the computer is on IP 192.168.1.133.

Go ahead and start PuTTY up. Select a Serial connection type with a BAUD rate of 9600. Hit connect. You’ll want to do this before you boot up the router as you only have a few seconds to enter bootstrap when you first start up the router.

Now plug in the router and hit escape. You’ll load into bootstrap mode. From here you can begin to make changes to the switch. The first commands you will want to execute are as follows:

This will erase all files in the file-system. Proceed? [y or n]y

Erasing file system. This may take several minutes…

This will erase the old firmware on the netvanta. Do not do this if you have a configuration on the router you need! Once this is finished we can begin transferring a new version of the firmware onto the router. Use the following commands to transfer the firmware:

5 Examples of The Subliminal Evocation in an Edward Hopper Painting

This article is a treatment of five Edward Hopper paintings, the famous American realist of whom the art critic Clement Greenberg has said: “Hopper is just a bad painter. But if he had been a better painter, he probably would not have been such a great artist“.

Chop Suey

The window-panes in this Edward Hopper painting seem to resemble the interfaces that emphasize the interior of the restaurant. Geometrical color fields define the window in the background. The window on the right side only allows a limited view. Visible is a facade, a fire escape, a patch of sky and the neon sign of the Chop Suey restaurant. Due to their art nouveau style-like head-gear and their heavily made up faces, the women seem to have a doll-like and rigid impression. This concerns the posture of the woman in the foreground, facing the beholder, but is especially visible on the woman in the background, who has even a more rigid impression. We see her face in profile, like she is a figurehead. The man who is sitting at her table seems self-absorbed, his facial expressions disappear in the shadow.

The heavy made-up faces of the women also suggest temptation. The billboard of the Chop Suey-restaurant reminiscents an entertainment district, the powerful red of the board corresponds with the accentuated mouths of the women and the half-covered letters of the word ‘suey’ are easily associated with the word ‘sex’. The symbols for temptation, desolation and rigidity are directly linked; and just like almost any another Edward Hopper painting, this canvas requires a double vision.

Western Motel

In this Edward Hopper painting entitled Western Motel, the unusually large windows in the composition extend a typical Western scenery. The woman sitting on the bed is not watching the landscape, but in the direction of the viewer. In the whole of the composition she resembles a portrait for a background which seems to be fossilized into a painting. But strangely enough this motel scene connects elements of rigidness and movement. It is true that its signs, the car and street, due to the motionless posture of the woman who is the centre of the painting, have lost their dynamics at first sight. But as a reaction to this, the falling light into the room brings the warm colors as much to life as the landscape, in front of the window, fossilizes them.

While the interior suggests movement, the view on the American landscape changes into a view on a scenery. It recalls a lost domain, a vision on America in days gone by and to the memory of a direct encounter of nature and civilisation. It is the far-reaching experience of the technical civilisation in the New World.

Compartment C

An Edward Hopper painting, that reverts to his earlier designs and at the same time evokes a new effect and a certain surprise on the beholder. On the one side, through the window of the coupé a landscape is visible with the river, the bridge and the dark wood on the horizon showing a boundary of the civilisation within the natural landscape. On the other side, the painting gets his special dynamic through the oblique perspective.

Compartment C also remains ambiguous because of its theme of enclosure, that takes place in relative peace. The play of colors doesn’t intersect the relations between inside and outside completely, but creates contexts; the engrossed reading of the woman is determined by peaceful relaxation and concentration.

New York Movie

The New York Movie-painting has a parallel with the previous Edward Hopper painting Compartment C. Instead of the view through the window in Compartment C the focus here is on a movie screen: together with the audience in the room the admirer of the painting looks at a Alpine landscape. This sight determines only a part of the painting; it is almost lost in the monumentality of the interior which is divided in stage, gradually ceiling layered formations and lamps, columns, curtains, corridor and stairs.

The usherette has the same deepened impression of the train traveler in Compartment C. But apparently this woman is neither interested in the view nor the illusion of the cinema.

Nighthawks

This late and most famous Edward Hopper painting is his only painting that depicts convex glass and makes the glass visible: the space of the bar surrounds the people like a hermetically sealed container. Besides we see a separation of both the urban environment as nature. The night in town is only illuminated by the light in the bar. Because the light enters obliquely, the composition obtains a suggestive dynamic, in which the light becomes the centre of the painting.

Although Hopper points out that he unconsciously had painted “the loneliness of the big city”, at the same time he emphasized the simplicity of the painting, in which he only tried to depict “a restaurant at Greenwich Avenue”, where two streets come together. The canvas is characterized by a psychological tension. To the desolation in the cities and the loneliness of the third bar visitor, the gathering of the couple is added, and on that, the psychological effect is based. Although this Edward Hopper painting emphasizes, by contrasting the bar and the shop in the background, the social environment, it is above all things a projection plane for various fantasies.
