Thyroid Brain Connection – Why Hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s Biggest Problem Is Brain Degeneration

People come in to my West Los Angeles Thyroid Institute every day with symptoms suggestive of a hypothyroid condition. It shocks me that these patients have very little understanding of the thyroid-brain connection. People think about low energy, thinning hair, and weight gain as the primary evils of hypothyroidism. One very common symptom is brain fog, these are the people who say “Dr. Beckingham I can’t remember things like where my keys are, why can’t I focus, I forget people names”. I have to educate these people that the weight and energy issues are valid but my real concern is the neuroendocrine component of low thyroid function, as well as the blood sugar issues. The blood sugar issue is for another story. I want to focus on the Brain and nervous system for now.

It has been clearly demonstrated that thyroid hormones exhibit very powerful microglia modulating properties. Microglia are a type of glial cell that are the resident macrophages of the brain and spinal cord, and thus act as the first and main form of active immune defense in the central nervous system (CNS). Microglia constitute 20% of the total glial cell population within the brain and spinal cord. Each neuron in the brain can have around 10 glial cells to work with it. Basically microglia kill bad things that should not be in the brain. Some studies go on to imply that excessive microglial reactions in the brain are associated with the lesions of neurodegenerative diseases. So brain degeneration is linked to excessive immune response in the brain.

I give patients the easy to understand example of a pimple. In a common pimple on the body the bacteria and oil present cause a noticeable immune response. The pimple becomes inflamed, red and tender to the touch. The same principle holds true in most immune reactions. So immune reaction in the brain causes inflammation in the brain tissue. It is this inflammation that causes damage. Clearly stated inflammation in the brain slows down the brain by blocking nerve conduction (communication) hence the brain fog. Microglia reaction causes inflammation that over prolonged periods causes brain damage.

If thyroid hormones help to regulate the brain immune response and keep in it check what happens if your thyroid does not work properly, brain degeneration! Thyroid hormones have been shown to promote neurogenesis (new cell growth), dendretic/axonal growth (the communication end pieces of nerve fibers), myelinnation (the insulation of a nerve), and synaptogenisis (the building of communication points of the brain). Thyroid hormones help promote serotonin reception which in turn activates the frontal cortex of the brain. So low thyroid could cause depression, lack of motivation, bowell issues, and poor coordination. How many thyroid patients have we seen with this presentation?

As we dig deeper it has been shown that T3 hormone (the active thyroid hormone) works hand in hand with acetylcholine and low T3 will result in poor brain function causing brain degeneration in particular the cerebellum (balance center, fear/pleasure response, posture control, coordination). So bad cerebellum function equals poor movement with balance problems. On top of that the things in life patients used to enjoy they do not anymore, I see this in my clinics all of the time.

Low thyroid function hurts memory by slowing hippocampus function by damaging glutamate receptor activity which also causes low dopamine levels. If you have low dopamine you are likely to get Parkinson’s disease. When I see my Parkinson’s patient’s they have been mismanaged because they have been diagnosed far too late. Parkinson’s for me functionally speaking has 8 stages with #1 being loss of smell, #2 loss of proper gut movement, all the way to #8 shaking of the body. A true text book diagnosis does not happen until stage 8, extremity shaking. My goal is to catch it early and modulate the Parkisonian reaction before too much damage is done. This is a whole other story.

The worst part of all of this is the previously mentioned brain neurotransmitters; Serotonin, Dopamine, and acetylcholine all play a role in helping the thyroid gland work. This causes a vicious cycle. Bad thyroid causes bad brain function which in turn causes worse thyroid. This is why just giving patients thyroid hormones without a full lab workup and brain assessment is borderline negligent practice. Remember most thyroid problems in the first place are autoimmune and the thyroid is just a victim of the body attacking itself.

To find out if you have an autoimmune disease I insist on antibody testing on all my chronic condition patients. An antibody is a protein marker. The body’s immune system produces antibodies in response to unwanted material like molds, virus, bacteria, and parasites. These substances are labeled antigens. Antibodies can be produced when the body has a reaction to a food it is sensitive to or comes in contact with a harmful chemical. Antibodies can mistakenly be produced against a bodies own healthy tissue when the immune system becomes confused. The antibody marks the tissue for removal and signals the immune response. This is the cause of autoimmune reactions. I like to check for gluten antibodies, myelin (fatty sheath around the nerves) antibodies, cerebellar (back part of the brain controlling balance, coordinated movement, and spinal muscles) antibodies.More examples of this could be antibodies to skin tissue often called psoriasis, antibodies to the thyroid tissue called Hashimoto’s disease, or antibodies to the nerve cells conductive coating known as multiple sclerosis.

In summation we have to focus on the whole patient not just one system, we have to look at the whole symptom presentation, we have to do full lab testing panels including antibodies, and we have to do a full neurotransmitter assessment. Educate our patients and help give them control over the condition without it controlling them.

J M Barrie (Author of Peter Pan) – Our Neighbour!

Since moving back to Dumfries, I was surprised to discover that the famous author of Peter Pan J.M. Barrie lived next door at number 6 Victoria Terrace during his years at Dumfries Academy. I was even further intrigued to discover that it was during his time here that the Peter Pan stories were vividly played out in J M Barrie’s young imagination whilst playing in a location that is now under threat of disappearing.

James Matthew Barrie was born on May 9th 1860 in Kirriemuir Scotland. He began writing many stories at an early age which he called “thrums” and throughout his life until he died on 19th May 1937 he wrote numerous highly acclaimed novels and plays, however his most famous work Peter Pan (1904) will ensure his place in history.

His story of a boy who refused to grow up, forever avoiding the world of adulthood is famous across the globe and is synonymous with stars such as Michael Jackson and Sir Cliff Richards.

James lived at 6 Victoria Terrace, Dumfries with his older brother Alexander whilst he attended Dumfries Academy from the age of 13 until he was 18. There is an inscription cut into the sandstone façade of the house which reads:

“Sir James Matthew Barrie 1860 – 1937. J M Barrie lived in this house, the home of his brother while a scholar at Dumfries Academy from 1873 to 1878. He regarded his stay in Dumfries as amongst his happiest days. His works include: Dear Brutus, The Little Minister, Quality Street, Peter Pan, The Admirable Crichton, Mary Rose. In 1924 Sir James was made a Freemason of Dumfries the town where Peter Pan was born”

On his first day at the academy he befriended the son of a local solicitor whose family lived at Moat Brae House near the school. One of the sons Stuart Gordon shared James’s vivid imagination for pirates and fairies and together with their imaginary pirate crew the large garden at the rear of the house shaped and inspired the story.

Moat Brae and the gardens latterly became a nursing home until it ceased in 1997 when it was sold to a private investor. From this date until April 2008 when it was sold to the Loreburn Housing Association little attention was paid to the fabric and condition of the building and unfortunately it has fallen in to a very sad state of repair, which culminated in 2009 reports that the house may be demolished.

Thankfully the Peter Pan action group are now in the process of establishing the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust to attempt to save the building and gardens in order that they can remain as a lasting reminder of the authors time in Dumfries and especially to preserve the place where the wonderful story of Peter Pan was born.

With 2010 being the 150th anniversary of J M Barrie’s birth and March 2010 hosting “Peter Pan Week” lets hope that this historical Georgian House and Gardens can survive and be a significant landmark in the Peter Pan story.

Identifying the Red Ring of Death

I am the current dissatisfied owner of an x-box 360 elite. If you are reading this, you probably are, too. Why am I dissatisfied? Well… I’m dissatisfied because my x-box is no longer a wonderful piece of disc-reading, entertainment-providing, stress-relieving technology. It is now a giant paperweight. With a fancy-schmancy “X” on it. Sitting on my living room floor and waiting for me to decide its fate.

The first step, of course, is to decipher what this horrible red mark means.

So. Lay your x-box down on its side. This is the proper orientation for identifying the red ring of death. Your power button has a circle around it that is divided into four quadrants. For simplicity’s sake, we’re going to label them. The top left is quadrant one, top right is quadrant two, bottom left is quadrant three, and bottom right is quadrant four. Got it? Good. Hit the power button.

Now… What do you see?

1. Green lights on any or all quadrants – This means your xbox is functioning properly. Put in a disc and see if it randomly has started working again. Stranger things have happened. But most likely the disc will cause your red flashy lights to come back.

2. Quadrant 4 is flashing red – Hardware Failure. I’ve found very little information about this particular error. It is not as common as the other errors. Microsoft’s website says to unplug everything, pop out the hard drive, wait for a while, and then plug it all back in. If that doesn’t fix it, the next solution is to send it in for repairs.

3. Quadrants 1 and 3 are flashing red – Your unit has overheated. Leave it alone to cool down. They say five minutes, but do you really want to risk it? Leave it for at least 20 minutes, and find a place with better airflow to put your machine.

4. Quadrants 1, 3, and 4 are flashing red – General Hardware Failure. This most likely means that a hardware component has actually become disabled. This is, a lot of the time, caused by the cold solder on the graphics chip cracking due to the dramatic temperature fluctuations inside the machine.

The three flashing lights can also mean that your console is not receiving all the power that it should from the power supply. Make sure the supply is all the way inserted into the machine. Check that the light on the power supply is green when the console is turned on. If it is red, you may need a new power supply. However, before you run off and purchase a new one, try unplugging the supply from the wall and from the console. Let it sit for 20 minutes or so and then plug everything back in. If it worked… great! If not, find a new cable. Maybe from someone else who lost their x-box to an untimely red ring of death.

5. All quadrants are flashing red – AV Cable Error. This warning actually does not show up on systems that have an HDMI connection. But if you don’t, and this shows up, double-check that your AV cables are fully inserted into each connection.

So… now you at least know what kind of red ring you have. That’s about where I am right now. Since I don’t have any desire to send my box away and pay $150 to have it fixed, I’m researching my other options.

Your VPN Doctor for Virtual Private Network Troubleshooting VPN Guide

Here are some troubleshooting guides for particular topics.

(1) Your Virtual Network Connection

(2) VPN Troubleshooting Error Messages

(3) VPN Modems Troubleshooting Guide

(4) VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide.

(1) Your Virtual Private Network Connection

Having trouble connecting to the Internet at home try these steps before calling for help.

1. Do you have an IP address? Try ipconfig /all. If you do not have an IP address reboot your PC. If that doesn’t work power cycle your Cable/DSL modem and routers and reboot your PC again after the network devices are up and stable. Be sure all of your network cables are plugged in tight.

2. After your PC reboots check that your network adapter is active and packets are flowing. Perform the ipconfig /all check again.

3. Check your connectivity by pinging several Internet sites. If that does not work, ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1. If that fails, your adapter may not be working or it is not properly configured.

To check your IP address. From command prompt enter ipconfig /all (as shown in the picture) you should see an IP Address and several DNS Server addresses. The domain name system (DNS) is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into IP addresses and is required for browsing the Internet.

Ping 127.0.0.1 – loopback Test (as shown in the picture). The loopback test is used to check if the IP stack is responding. If it times out or you get an error the problem may occur if any one or more of the following conditions is true:

*The TCP drivers are corrupted

*The network adapter is not working

*Another service is interfering with IP

Check your network adapter, click the Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, and select Network Connections. Double click on the Local Area Connection or the Wireless Adapter whichever one you are using. Be sure its Connected. If you have multiple network cards disable the one you are not using.

There should be Packets displayed in both the Sent and Received counters. If the Received counter is 0 check that the adapter has an IP address. Select Properties.

Click the check boxes for Show icon and Notify me below. A twin PC icon will appear on the lower right portion of the taskbar in the tray area and will flash while sending and receiving packets. You can place your mouse over the icon to get the status and click on it to get more details.

Tracert displays the connection path to the target location and the number of hops. Each hop is the trip from one router to another. Tracert is a handy tool both for understanding where problems are in the network and for determining latency between hops.

Ping is used to determine whether a host exists and is active on the network and can determine the round trip time to the device. You can enter a host name or an IP address if you know it. If the request times out then the host is not reachable because it’s offline or there is a problem with the connection. Try several sites, if none work then ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1 Also, if your DNS is not working or properly configured you can only ping the host with an IP address and you will not be able to browse the Internet.

If you are having intermittent problems, perform a ping -t for 5 to 6 minutes then hit CTRL C to see the results of the test to determine if you are dropping network packets (lost packets). If you are, this usually indicates an ISP problem or Cable/DSL modem problem. See VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide

(2) VPN Troubleshooting Error Messages

Q1 Error Message: Remote Host not responding: or Unable to Resolve the IP address of the Remote Server

Cause: This indicates that the Contivity VPN Switch never responded to the connection attempt. The problem could either be with the Contivity switch itself, (switch may be down) or your machine may be having a problem resolving the IP address.

Action: Try pinging your destination name (Example: VPN.something.com). If you received a message that says “Request Timed Out” from the ping command, call your ISP to make sure that their DNS is functioning correctly.

Q2 Error Message: Maximum number of sessions reached

Cause: This indicates that the maximum number of users for the account you are using are currently logged on.

Action: If you are the only user with VPN to your account, it is possible to get this error if you restarted a connection immediately after losing the dial-up connection to your ISP. This is because the Contivity VPN Switch takes up to one hour to determine that your connection has been dropped and log you off from your account.

Q3 Error Message: Login failed, Please consult the switch log for further information

Cause: The User Name or the Password is incorrect for the user name entered.

Action: Verify that the User Name you entered is correct and retype the Password before trying the connection again.

Q4 Error Message: The physical connection has been lost

Cause: Your connection to your ISP was disconnected.

Action: Re-establish your connection to your ISP before you re-establish the Contivity connection to the remote network.

Q5 Error Message: The secure Contivity connection has been lost

This message can result due to a number of different reasons, and there are several recommended actions you can take to try and re-connect.

Cause(s):

If you receive this error before the client connects then something is blocking a necessary port (such as ESP port 50). This can result if your firewall is not configured properly and is restricting the necessary port(s).

If you receive this error during a connection and you suddenly get the error it may mean one of the following:

1. Something closed the connection;

2. The VPN Contivity switch where you were trying to connect to thought your client was down or timed out;

3. Your local ISP did something that interrupted your network connection long enough for the VPN Contivity switch to identify your client was not responding;

4. The VPN Contivity switch that you are connected to has either logged your connection off or the Switch is no longer responding, or a device that does not support IPSEC NAT Traversal is causing the connection failure.

Action(s):

1. Try re-establishing the Contivity connection by clicking the Connect button. If this works, the connection was probably lost due to the Idle Timeout configured on the Contivity VPN Switch. If no data is transferred through the Contivity connection for a long period of time, 15 minutes or more, the Contivity VPN Switch automatically disconnects the connection;

2. If you were unable to successfully re-establish the Contivity Connection, the dial-up connection may be preventing data from traveling between the Contivity VPN Client and the Contivity VPN Switch. Hang up the dial-up connection and reconnect before you try to re-establish a connection to the Contivity VPN Switch;

3. If you are still unable to connect to the Contivity VPN Switch, open a Command Prompt and try pinging the Contivity VPN Switch using the host name or address that you specified in the Destination field.

(a) If you receive a “Destination Unreachable error” there is a routing problem at the ISP.

(b) If you receive a “Request Timed Out” error message, the Contivity VPN Switch is probably not available, and you should contact your Network Administrator.

4. If you keep getting this message and are unable to connect, then it may indicate that the Contivity VPN Switch is unable to communicate with the client because it is behind some kind of NAT (Network Address Translation) device. NAT (Network Address Translation) Traversal allows a number of devices on a private network to access the Internet simultaneously without each requiring its own external IP address. Most hotels and airports that provide Internet connectivity use NAT to connect to the Internet.

Q6 Error Message: Cannot Alter Routing Table

Cause: Message means the you the user, an application on your machine, or your ISP attempted to change the routing table via an ICMP redirect attempt and it was not successful. The client detects the attempt to make the change, determines it’s a security breach and shuts down the client’s connection. Any time you make a VPN connection, you cannot change the routing table, because the VPN Client views this as a security risk and you will get disconnected.

Some applications require an ICMP redirection in order to work such as a game or other third party software.

Action: If you receive this error and cant connect due to an ICMP redirect attempt, shut down any other applications you are using which may be causing the ICMP redirect attempt. If it is the ISP that is doing it, you will need to block the ICMP redirect request. You can identify that ICMP redirect has occurred, by seeing a message saying there has been an IP address routing table change.

Q7 Error Message: Receiving Banner Text Information

Cause: Message means you are experiencing a Banner Sock issue, and will see a window displaying the “Receiving Banner Text” message and then gets disconnected.

Actions:

1. Disable the firewall completely to test. This is a port 500 issue and often means that the you have a personal Firewall that is blocking port 500 or you have a router that does not support IPSEC pass-through, and the you are connecting to a VPN switch that does not have NAT Traversal enabled.

2. If using wireless, temporarily remove Wireless from the picture and focus on the Ethernet card. Check the Ethernet card speed and duplex parameters and then make sure that the hub, switch, or router that is on the other end has the same parameters. If not, the VPN connection will drop as the link goes up and down, or due to a large number of errors on the port from a duplex and or speed mismatch.

3. Firewall that blocks the connection, such that system will crash. (This will rarely happen) NSDF (Norton Symantec Desktop Firewall) and NSPF (Norton Symantec Personal Firewall) can do this though, if you do not trust the IP address of the VPN connection.

If you do not trust the VPN address of the VPN client, the firewall will cause you to crash. In your Internet browser click on “Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites” and add the destination VPN address(es) to your trusted sites.

Q8 Error Message: You already have the maximum number of adapters installed

Cause: You may have installed to many virtual adapters in your IP Stack

Actions:

1. Remove any unnecessary adapters;

2. Create multiple boot scenarios disabling the adapters that are not required for that function;

3. You may also get Banner Sock errors on Win 95 & 98 units with this condition;

4. For more information, see this Microsoft article: KB217744: Unable to Bind Protocols to More Than 5 Network Adapters (copy and paste into the search tool bar > enter).

Q9 Upgrade Errors: The following are some errors that may occur when trying to upgrade / install the Nortel VPN Client 4.65

Error (1): Failed to get Registry key value for NT_IPSECSHM

Cause: This is caused because an important registry key that cannot be found in the system registry.

Actions:

1. Uninstall and Reinstall the VPN Software

Error (2): Login Failure due to: Driver Failure

Cause: This is generally caused by either not having Admin rights to the PC or by trying to install/use a Nortel VPN client that predates the operating system.

Actions:

1. Ensure that you have admin rights to the PC.

2. Update/Install the most current version of the Nortel VPN client.

Error (3): Create socket failed with 10048.

Cause: This problem generally will occur whenever you have another VPN client software installed on the system. The most noted conflicting clients are: AOL, Cisco VPN Client(s), SSH Sentinel and PGP.

Actions:

1. Removing these clients will in most cases, resolve the issue.

(3) VPN Modems Troubleshooting Guide

Q1 Are Cable Modems supported for VPN Access?

Yes, you can use cable modems for VPN access. However you must be aware of the following conditions and be able to work within them:

*Some cable modems require that you log into an NT network to get authenticated.

*Some cable modems use a client similar to the Extranet Client for VPN and both will not run at the same time.

*Some cable modem Contracts/Acceptable Use Policies specify that you cannot use them for business purposes or they want to charge you another fee to use them for business purposes. Make sure you read your contract thoroughly.

*Your Cable modem provider is your ISP. Please see the VPN-connection-guide.html”>ISP Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Q2 Why does my modem seem to perform erratically?

Always make sure that you do not let the operating system select a generic modem. If required, go to the appropriate web site for the vendor of the modem and get the updated INF file so that the proper parameters are configured for the modem.

Q3 Why do I always seem to get a slower connection speed than others with the same modem?

1. Always check the modem configuration to verify that its maximum speed has been selected.

2. It is common when auto-installing modems that the highest speed is not selected automatically.

3. Do not check the box that says run at maximum speed only.

Q4 I plugged my modem into the phone line at the hotel or customers office and now it does not work.

Always make sure that the phone line you are plugging into when visiting somewhere is an analog line not a digital one. Plugging into a digital line can permanently damage your modem, requiring a replacement unit. To avoid these situations please contact the local site phone support personnel.

Q5 Why cant I get a 56Kb V.90 connection from some locations that I go to?

Here are some of the reasons why you might not get a 56K connection:

1. You are located more than 3 ½ miles from your telephone companys central office (CO).

2. A SLICK or Subscriber Loop System is used in your area.

3. You are calling from a digital PBX system, which creates a Digital to Analog conversion and then an Analog to Digital conversion.

4. Your line contains digital pads or Robbed Bit Signaling (RBS), which can degrade your connection speeds.

5. Your wiring may be of poor quality.

6. Your modem’s firmware may not be up-to-date. Check that your modem has the newest V.90 code installed with all the patches from the vendor’s web site.

Q6 Why cant I get higher speed on my 56K v.90 modem into some NAG?

Here are some possible reasons:

1. A 56k v.90 modem is asymmetric by design where download speed can be as much as 56k but upload speed will be up to 33.6bps. For 56k to work, there must be only one analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion in your local phone loop. Thus when modems at both ends are analogue, 56k speeds will never be achieved as most PSTN exchanges run digital routing between the exchanges.

2. Some NAG sites use analog phone lines with Cisco and standard 56k modems, and most PC’s dial-ups use a similar modem. Between the two modems, it limits the download speed to about 33.6kbps maximum.

3. Also, many users might experience lower connection speeds due to other reasons, such as more poor line quality. These factors will also contribute to the quality and speed of the line.

(4) VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide

Q1 If you are getting the message “Unable to Resolve the IP address of the Remote Server. Verify the Host Name in the destination field is correct.” when trying to connect with the Extranet Client.

Try pinging your destination name (Example: VPN.something.com) and if it fails call your ISP to make sure that their DNS is functioning correctly.

Q2 Why do I get No Domain Available when dialing my ISP?

On your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection. Right click the mouse and select the properties button. Click on the Server Type tab and make sure that the Log On To Network box is unchecked.

Q3 Why do I seem to be running slowly through my VPN connection?

Try turning off the Software Compression option on your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection as the VPN client has it’s own compression. Right click the mouse and select the properties button. Click on the Server Type tab and uncheck the

Q4 I keep getting busy signals when trying to connect to my ISP, what should I do?

Contact your ISP giving the numbers you are trying to connect to. Many times you will find that can give you an alternate number not published yet that will work just fine. If not you may need to find another ISP that provides better service.

Q5 When configuring the dial icon for my ISP what should I put in the DNS/WINS settings?

Your ISP should supply you with the DNS/WINS settings of your dial connection. Most only give you DNS, in this case just leave the WINS settings blank.

Q6 Why when I load the Extranet Client on my PC and Winpoet is installed on my machine it crashes or does not work properly?

There are issues running Winpoet software on the PC with the Nortel Extranet (VPN) Client.

To repair your system, boot in safe mode and uninstall the Winpoet Software.

A simple solution is to install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router. It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates Winpoet from the PC and provides the added benefit a NAT firewall with the ability to hook up to three other PCs.

A second option is to find a PPPOE Client that does not interfere with VPN Clients.

Are You Thinking of Opening Multiple Chiropractic Practices?

You have been in practice for many years. You have been successful in building and maintaining your practice. The professional goals you established upon graduation have been far exceeded. Now you have ten, fifteen or twenty years before you complete your career. What are your options to grow personally and professionally?

Turning one practice into multiple practices would define growth by many mid-career Chiropractors. To be able to serve more of the community and in turn increase your passive income, lessen doctor/ patient time and increase practice equity would further expand the definition of your success.

As a co-owner of six Chiropractic practices my experiences can clarify, if multiple practice expansion is a viable option for you to reach a higher professional satisfaction. If asked, most Chiropractors would say they would love to own multiple practices and reap the rewards, but most Chiropractors that attempt expansion fail.

A common business plan is to open a second office and work in it on your days off. Build a small patient base and then an associate can take over the existing patent base. What invariably occurs is the existing practice decreases in profitability, a small practice is built at the satellite practice, overhead costs almost double, and the doctor is working an additional two days, in addition to the regular work week, with zero financial ability to hire an associate. The doctor now finds him or herself bleeding until they hemorrhage. The reality is every hour they spend at the satellite office they are losing money and enthusiasm.

This failed plan plays over and over. I have benefited by purchasing many of my satellite practices from doctors at the hemorrhage stage. The doctors all felt that selling their practices at an undervalued price is better than continuing to loose money and energy. For them, it was to sell or close the office completely.

The fundamental mistake these doctors have made is they have worked in their practice, not on their practice. This statement by Michael Gerber in the E-Myth must be understood completely before attempting any expansion.

Doctors tell me all of the time that they are working harder then they ever have before, spending time traveling from one practice to another, training new staff, and seeing more people. They are not accomplishing their goal of multiple practices; they are just doing more of what they’re already doing with a lot more overhead. They are working in their practice.

The Chiropractor whose goal is multiple practices must work less as a Chiropractor and more as a visionary, administrator and motivator of staff. A transformation must occur from the practice of Chiropractic to the business of Chiropractic. A shift in thought from “This is what I do, I will do more of it myself” to “I must delegate responsibilities to grow” is a necessity for growth. Your interest will increase in other related areas such as computer technology for higher efficiency, human resources for quality hiring and training, and improvements in basic business modus operandi. Your responsibilities will include investigating the best purchasing opportunity for printing, phone, x-ray sales and service, malpractice and business liability insurance and durable Chiropractic supplies. The doctor that puts their energy into implementing specific systems that can evaluate productivity and efficiency within their practice is working on their practice.

There are three interdependent traits I have found that define success in any project but definitely in multiple office expansion; vision, motivation and system implementation. The vision you create will be the motivating force that develops quality systems that can be highly executed.

You, the Chiropractor must be the visionary; the leader that has a burning desire to climb this mountain. Your employees must understand, agree and follow this vision. Ideally, the Chiropractor, staff and patients should all be aligned in the mission of the practices.

This vision must encompass satisfaction for all involved. Each person working with you must have a communal as well as a personal interest in reaching the goal. By serving the community, the practice, and oneself professionally and financially, solidifies the entire organization with the vision.

No one person can execute all of the needed tasks to build and sustain multiple practices; it is a true team effort. To acknowledge this statement exemplifies the need to motivate your team. Not all employees are motivated by the same compensation or by the same management style. My experience has found that evolving into a well defined corporate culture enables the leader to anticipate the needs of the team. High employee diversity leads to an increased difficulty to motivate and manage. Similar personalities are motivated with similar and predictable ethics, expectations and rewards.

As the organization grows the talent it takes to manage and motivate must increase equally. My basic theory to successfully manage staff is to clearly define what is expected from the employee, have them agree to that level of competency and then motivate and manage them to accomplish that expected level.

“Success is in the system” and, “the system is in the solution” are common phrases in my offices. We live by them and grow by them. The most famous illustration of the concept is McDonalds. With a personnel turnover of three hundred percent they rely on systems to accomplish a predictable standard of quality and service. Once the system had been established replicating the service to over 25,000 worldwide locations was history.

In many one doctor multiple staff practices the Chiropractor has the least knowledge on the systems within their practice; the office manager runs “the show”. This doctor is reliant on that person to the point of being held hostage. The doctor that peels away each major task within their practice and develops a system to complete that task by others will be able to grow into multiple practices. That doctor must first master the task, document the process or system and then put it in stone for all to use. Each system must have a component that evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of that specific system for constant improvement. This allows the doctor to delegate with the ability to monitor. The result of this process is growth; growth by organization, not by individual.

The most difficult challenge is to commit to multiple practices, financially and emotionally. Truly commit, not go into the plan by stating, “I will open a second office and see how I do”. Once committed you become the architect, designing the business plan with your talents. Drawing from your past experiences you will transition concept into reality.

Personally, growing from one practice to six has been one of my most challenging and satisfying professional experiences. I can relate it to mastering a video game. In a video game, at first each move you make you hit a landmine that brings you close to death. As you begin to understand this new environment you develop a plan or vision to win. It soon becomes evident that a motivated workforce with a plan or system will conquer your opponent. Further repetition of the needed tasks increases your ability to perform at a level of excellence. With all of these forces behind you to gain intellectual strength, political influence and financial independence, you crush the opposition. Unfortunately, life doesn’t imitate video games exactly.

Remodeling Your Bathroom – What Does a 4 Inch Spread Faucet Say About Your Home?

Before I entered into the Kitchen & Bath industry I never thought about the difference between a 4″ spread faucet and an 8″ spread faucet. I grew up in a small, rural town and honestly can’t remember the type of faucet in any house I had seen, including my own. My parents built a new house in the late 70’s so I’m sure all the faucets were 4″ spread or also known as mini faucets. I really never looked or knew the difference.

Even in my 20’s, I owned my home and did a low budget renovation. I had to aleve myself of the 50’s blue from Kohler. Oddly, I don’t really know the official name of the color. I went to Home Depot and bought a new pedestal sink. It had a 4″ spread faucet hole drilling. I thought I was really ‘upgrading’. It definitely was an upgrade but if I had known in advance with a little extra money it would have made a bigger difference.

What is the big deal whether you have a 4″ and 8″ spread faucet? And for many of us… what does that mean anyway! A sink or countertop will determine the faucet spread you need. Holes are drilled to accommodate the faucet. Look at the hole drillings. If you put a measuring tape up to the holes there will be either a 4″ or 8″ spread between them. Please note that in all plumbing situations, you measure from the center of the hole and not the right or left of the hole. All plumbing measures are made from the center of the hole.

The upside with purchasing an 8 inch spread or also know as a widespread faucet is that it tends to be known as ‘higher end’. It means you took your renovation seriously. Perhaps these issues are not important to you and that’s fine. So let’s look at the more practical reasons to choose between the two faucet types.

1. It’s usually harder to clean an 8″ spread faucet because there are three separate flanges to clean. With a 4″ spread faucet there is normally a single bottom plate to clean around.

2. The quality of an 8″ spread faucet is usually better than a 4″ faucet. I should state is more than usually better. Between the function and finish the 8″ spread should usually win in the long run. Also, 4″ spread faucets are normally available in chrome only.

3. Because of the first two points, a desire to achieve better things is the reason to get an 8″ faucet. Everyone wants to improve there lives and purchase nicer things when they are affordable.

Now it is time for reality. Buy the faucet that you can afford. Have a budget. It doesn’t matter if you have 4″ or 8″ faucet. You don’t have to impress your friend, family and enemies with having the best things. If you can afford it then go for it. If not, enjoy the water that runs out of it. It’s about water. There is no need to impress anybody; just enjoy. Family and friends are far more important than the faucet you choose.

Night Fishing For Catfish – Enticing Trophy Catfish Into A Feeding Frenzy!

Equipment you will need:

  • Boat
  • Boat Anchors
  • Separate 12v Battery To run lights
  • Night Lights
  • Submerged Lighting
  • Live Bait Keeper
  • Chum bag
    Rod Holders

  • Heavy Bait Casting Or Spinning Rig
  • Insect Repellent

Night fishing for catfish can be a very rewarding fishing trip. Trust me If you do it correctly you will catch fish, not only will you catch fish but some will be lunkers! Catfish feed at night and are very active, and when they get into a feeding frenzy fishing action can be incredible! Catfish are attracted to submerged lighting And have a very keen sense of smell. So If you can locate their nightly haunts you can entice them on to your hook with some simple methods I will explain here. But first you must be setup and prepared for night fishing it is totally different at night then in the day. Things you take for granted during the day, don’t apply at night.

Boat Setup for night fishing

Before you even think about going night fishing for catfish you need to have the following items:, lights for inside the boat, either battery or Coleman fuel type lanterns with two mantles. Set up your lights so they distribute light evenly inside the boat. I personally fish from a 20 foot pontoon and I have 3 halogen battery powered lights hung 2in the front, left and right and one hanging from my canopy in the rear. (I have used my Colemans but they attract a huge amount of insects)

You also will need a secondary light on your person. This light is used for re-rigging your fishing poles. Trust me, no matter how prepared you are before your trip you will loose some tackle, from line crossovers, or snags, or fish snapping your line. (you can limit this by using heavy tackle and making sure your line is fresh) I personally use a led light that clips to the visor on my ball cap.

You also will need a light to illuminate the water surface I recommend 12v halogen light that can be directed outside the boat. Mount it on the side of your boat, in the center. I personally use and adjustable halogen that I can clip to the railing on my pontoon. Direct the light at a 60 degree angle from boat to water. This will illuminate the surface.

You will need a submerged light source. You are probably asking your self right now why do I need submerged lighting? The submerged lights will generate plankton swirls that will attract bait fish. Once the bait fish start schooling The big cats will come. attract schools Submerged lighting rigs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, the one I use is 36″ long about 4″ in diameter. Center the submerged light in the illumination pattern of the surface water lighting you just set up. Anchor your submerged lighting about 12 ” off the bottom, (without an anchor they will float on top of the water).. make sure the light completely submerged under the water. I recommend you use a 5lb weight as an anchor. If possible, anchor the submerged light about 2 to 3 ft from the boat.

You will need a secondary power source for the submerged light, the water illumination light and to operate your aerator pump for your live bait or live well.”do not use your boats power source” This will drain your battery.”you don’t want to get stuck on the lake at night right? If you take a well charged 12v marine battery as your second source it will last through the night.

You will need all Your poles pre-rigged If you have the rigs I would set up 3 poles, per person in advance of getting on the water. The reason I suggest this is because it’s real pain the “blank” To re-rig at night. You will end up doing it anyway, but if you have spare poles already set up, use them first before you have waist valuable time with poles out of the water.

Locating the cat’s nightly haunts

It has been my experience the bigger cat’s roam the shore lines or back waters in search of food at night. Every body of water will be different. I highly recommend you do some research on the body of water you intend to night fish for catfish on. At Minimum Get a topographical map of the area before you attempt your trip. These can be attained at any of the local bait and tackle shops in the area. (I recommend you visit one of these shops to get the local scoop anyway, if you dig deep enough these guys can pin point on the map Where to start fishing. This will save you lots of time.)

Enticing the Cats to your boat.

Once you have your water surface lights and your submerged lights set up and ready to go you don’t even need to do the next step, you are ready to start fishing. The submerged lighting will get the schools of bait fish coming, but I take it step one step further because if you play on the catfish’s extra sensitive sense of smell you can drive the Big cats into a feeding frenzy! OK You say how?

Well the answer is by introducing “chumming”. Chumming releases a slick of dead fish smells and fish guts that the small bait fish and catfish feed on. There are many commercial chumming systems you can purchase and they work very well, but I use a simple very inexpensive method that anyone can set up. First you will need a nylon netted bag that you can close tight. (a good example would the netted bags that you put golf balls in that have a string closure adjustment) This is what I use, works perfect, very inexpensive. Next, get some good size freezer bags, 3 should do for one nights trip.

Next, Purchase about 2 dozen good size chubs and cut them in 1″ to 2″ slices, make sure you do this in a pan that will not drain all the juices. Fill the freezer bags pieces and juice all together, and let them sit outside in the sun all day long. Yes it will stink to high heaven by the end of the day, but that is what you want! Now stick the freezer bag in side the meshed bag that can close. Close the bag tight and tie a line at the bottom of the bag about 2 feet long. Attach about a 2lb anchor to get the bag to the bottom. Now tie a line at the top of the bag with enough lead line to get the bag on the bottom. Now before you lower the chum bag to the bottom take an ice pick, or something sharp that will puncture the bag, but not tear the plastic. Punch the freezer bag numerous times, then lower to the bottom an tie it off on the side of the boat.

Now its time to fish! But before we go there lets re-visit Your catfish rigs. There are many catfish rigs you can use, and they all work in situations they are designed for. When you are fishing at night and you have submerged a lighting setup, you want get your line about 2 ft away from the light source, approximated on the outer edges of the source’s beam.

You will be fishing only a short distance from the boat, so your rigs need to be set up to fish in close proximity to the boat. You could fish tight line with a basic catfish hook and a small sinker. Or use a slip bobber system. I prefer to use the slip bobber system.

I use the single hook rig. Both rigs shown in the illustration work fine but I just have preference for the single hook rig. I do use the double hook rig when fishing for other types of fish. I use all heavy duty, open face, and spin cast rod and reels with 30lb test. When you do get a lunker on your line you want the tackle set up to handle the fight. You miss some smaller cats, but it’s well worth it when you catch your first 10lb plus catfish.

Baits To Use

both Channel and Blue catfish will eat just about any small fish like Suckers, small shad, or bluegills both live or dead. I use both live bait and dead “cut bait” I will normally set one pole up with a small live gill no more that 3inches in length. My other poles will be baited with cut bait, normally LARGE suckers 6″ or longer cut in 1″ to 2″ chunks.

Now Bait your rigs,Get Your Boat Setup and get ready for an exciting Night fishing for Catfish Trip! Once you catch a lunker 10 pounder + You will be Hooked for life! So have fun and good luck!

Interior Design Lighting Basics 101

Lighting is important! Without it, you’re just “in the dark.” That might be OK for a while, but sometime soon, you will want to “see the light!”

A lot of lighting in residential interiors happens without a vision, a plan, or a purpose. It is especially important in brand new homes or remodels; that a floor plan showing the furniture arrangements, is drawn up and that a “reflected ceiling plan” is done on top of that, so that we know where lighting needs to be positioned. This enables us to see what we want the lighting plan to accomplish for us. That all revolves strongly around developing the ambiance, mood, and feeling.

The idea is that we want to see the effects of the lighting, not just the lighting sources themselves. In certain cases like with chandeliers and such, the aesthetical value of the fixture is very important, just as the lighting is very important.

Another aspect is the more we can “zone” lighting and put different fixtures on dimmers or rheostats the better we are, because it gives us a broader range of play and control. With the proper lighting within the space, we can generate a broader range of emotional impact!

In order to accomplish that, we need to know how dark or light the space is going to be, what kind of textures and what kind of materials are we going to be dealing with, what is it that were going to be lighting; whether cocktail tables, seating groups, artwork, and sculpture etc.

I am going to cover briefly three different lamp styles or bulb styles. A “lamp” is what we call it in the profession, vs. a bulb that most everybody else in the world would call it.

  • Number One is the “A” lamp, similar to what Edison designed, and what most people put in a table lamp. With this lamp or bulb, light is emanating out in all directions. Therefore, there is no particular control of this type of lamp.
  • Number Two is the “reflector” lamp. These usually come in “spots” or “floods,” referring respectively to a tight beam spread or a wide beam spread. Since it is cone-shaped, it is very focused lighting, which emanates outward like a fan in 360°, because it has a base reflector.
  • Number Three is a refinement of the “R” or reflector lamp. It’s called an MR-16. It’s quite a bit smaller, with a mirror faceted reflector and it operates off a transformer, stepping the voltage down from 120 volts to 12 volts. This type of lighting is “low-voltage” lighting. There is much more control with these lamps and they are more “color corrected” in that they render colors better and with more balance in the warm and cool areas of the color spectrum.

You’ll see MR-16’s used in jewelry stores because their balanced color rendering properties. A diamond splits light into the colors of the rainbow. This is part of what jewelers call “fire.” They want those gems to have a lot of “fire,” “sparkle,” and color.

Where we position the fixture, that actually holds the “lamp,” which actually does the work, is dependent on what we are lighting. Whether it be a painting or sculpture; we have to position the fixture depending on how low or high the ceiling is, the angle of “attack,” the beam spread of the lamp, the wattage of the lamp, and the distance the lamp is placed from the object being lit. This all falls under the subject or category of photo-metrics.

If you think of a flashlight, there is a reflector and a bulb or “lamp” at one end. You hold the barrel of the flashlight with your hand. Imagine the flashlight, as the fixture that holds the lamp. Your hand actually directs the light beam where you want it to go. On the other hand, consider the fixture analogous to your hand. Your hand just holds and directs the light. Some flashlights are adjustable as far as the beam spread. You can screw them down tight for a tight beam spread or loosen them up for wide beam spread. So remember, the “lamp” or bulb is what actually does the job!

In summary, we have to work the lighting plan backwards and determine the effects that we want to accomplish with the lighting, what kind of lighting illumination levels we want in order to bring in a lot of variety and interest, as well as enhance textures, so that objects and the environment really come “alive.”

Culture As A Barrier To Communication

Each of us is exposed to people from other cultures on a regular basis, in the workplace, in our social activities, at school, or even within our families. Our culture hinders us from getting our message across as well receiving the full message that others want to convey to us. This article expound on three aspects: what culture is, the main causes for cross-cultural misunderstandings, and the attitudes and skills that we need to communicate cross-culturally.

When we think about culture we first think about a country, and particularly about its food, art, customs, and patterns of behavior. These are the outward manifestations of a system of values, assumptions, and deeply rooted beliefs. Culture emerges as a group of people face and then react to the challenges of life. The responses to those challenges that are successful are taught and shared among members of the group and are passed on from the older to the younger members. Culture is then learned through experience.

You can think of culture as having three levels:

o The top level is the outward manifestations, the artifacts: visible behavior, art, clothing and so on.

o In the middle level are the values. These are invisible rules that cause the artifacts

o The most powerful dimension of culture is the implicit cultural assumptions. These assumptions lie so deep that they are never questioned, stated or defended

Culture also exists among Americans, but what are the implicit cultural assumptions of Americans? Some of the most distinctive characteristics of the American culture are: individualism, equality, competition, personal control of the environment, self-help concept, action orientation, informality, directness, practicality, materialism, and problem-solving orientation.

These American values and deeply rooted beliefs are very different from other country’s values and beliefs. The implicit cultural assumptions of Americans are often opposed to those of other cultures. When individuals from different cultures run into each other’s values and beliefs, cross-cultural misunderstandings take place.

People constantly interact with people who have similar views and who reinforce their beliefs. To be able to distinguish between the in-group and the out-group is of central importance for individuals because it allows them to find an identity as to who they are and who they are not.

In the book entitled Cross Cultural Encounters , Brislim states: “If individuals have out-groups whom they can blame for troubles, the in-group is then solidified since there is a common goal around which to rally.” Later on he says: “Individuals become accustomed to reacting in terms of in-group and out-groups. They continue to use such distinctions when interacting with people from other cultures whom they do not know.”

This in-group/out-group distinction provides us with the basis for ethnocentrism, which is the tendency to interpret and to judge all other groups, their environment, and their communication according to the categories and values of our own culture. We are guilty of ethnocentrism when we hold that our view of the world is the right one, the correct one, and the only one.

We are all familiar with stereotyping, which is one of the most serious problems in intercultural communication. Our tendency to hold beliefs about groups of individuals based on previously formed opinions, perceptions, and attitudes is often a defense mechanism, a way of reducing anxiety.

There are many other causes of cross-cultural misunderstanding: lack of trust, lack of empathy, and the misuse of power. All of us know what they are about and the turmoil that they cause. But, how can we do a better job at communicating among cultures?

The same skills that we need to communicate in general apply to cross-cultural communication. Lets look at some of those skills:

Know yourself: Identify your attitudes, your opinions, and the biases that we all carry around. Identify your likes, your dislikes, your prejudices, and your degree of personal ethnocentrism.

Take time: Listen to the other person and allow him or her to accomplish their purpose. Don’t jump to conclusions. Some times we finish the thoughts and ideas of the other person before he or she has finished talking. Some cultures non-verbal styles call for periods of silence and long pauses.

Encourage feedback: Feedback allows communicators to correct and adjust messages. Without feedback we cannot have agreement. First we must create an atmosphere where others are encouraged to give us feedback. Again, don’t be afraid of silence. It could be the appropriate feedback at times.

Develop empathy: The grater the difference between us and others, the harder it is to empathize. To develop empathy we must put ourselves in the other person’s place. By becoming more sensitive to the needs, values, and goals of the other person, we overcome our ethnocentric tendencies.

Seek the commonalities among diverse cultures: Despite our cultural differences we are all alike in many ways. We need to seek that common ground to establish a bond between ourselves and the rest of humanity.

Although our own ethnocentrism might have hindered us from getting to know people from other cultures, let us be more than ever committed to help ourselves and others overcome the barrier that culture creates. Let us endeavor to minimize the occurrences of cross-cultural misunderstandings as we develop the attitudes and the skills that are needed to communicate cross-culturally.

My Wife Takes Everything Out on Me! The Right Way to Handle This

When things aren’t going right in your wife’s life you’re the one she turns to. She’s not looking for comfort or words of encouragement. She’s much more interested in getting her frustrations out by nagging you, screaming at you or initiating an argument. If you’re tired of being used in this way, no one can blame you. You didn’t sign up for this when you agreed to marry her. You’ve likely tried talking to her about this in a rational way but that didn’t work. Maybe you’ve even threatened her with the idea of a separation, or more seriously, a divorce. If you feel that you’re running out of options, and your wife is still continuing this destructive behavior, you need to change the course your marriage is heading down.

You’ve probably heard the old saying about how people take things out on those closest to them. We often use that as an excuse when we take our partner’s feelings for granted. This is exactly what your wife is doing now. If she’s frustrated or disheartened by something that is going on in her life, she turns to you to vent her feelings. Unfortunately, in most cases, you’re not the cause of her negativity yet you are forced to bear the brunt of it. In order to stop her from doing this, you have to guide her towards dealing with those issues in a more productive and less detrimental way.

It’s important that you address this in a moment when she’s feeling calm and centered. If you try and bring it up while she’s in the middle of a rant about something that has gone wrong in her life, it will only add fuel to her emotional fire. She’ll feel even more justified in screaming at you and an all out argument will ensue.

Suggest to your wife that you want to talk about something that you feel is impacting your marriage. If you do this while she’s feeling content, she’ll be more open to working with you towards a solution. You need to begin the conversation on a very positive note. Many men don’t realize that if they approach their wife with a heartfelt compliment that she’ll be that much more receptive to hearing what comes next. You could say something about how much you really adore her or how proud you are of her for something she’s done recently. This will set the tone for the conversation. She’ll instinctively understand that you want to help her and not attack her.

Explain that you’ve noticed that she is under stress recently. If you know the source of the stress, mention it. This helps to show your wife that you’re invested in what’s going on in her life and you’re genuinely concerned. Then tell her that you are worried about how it’s affecting her. Point out if she’s seemed sadder than normal recently or if her temper has a hair trigger. Be compassionate while you talk about this and don’t allow your tone to become accusatory at all.

It’s vital that you tell her that you recognize that life can become overwhelming at times but you’re there to help her in any way that you can. If she’s struggling with all the work she has at the office, suggest the idea of her going in on a Saturday to catch up while you tend to the kids. If she’s a mom who works at home full-time, she may need a mini-vacation to recharge her emotional batteries so arrange a spa day for her and a friend.

If you take an interest in helping your wife to better balance the things that are causing her stressful outbursts, you’ll be doing your marriage a huge favor. You’ll also be demonstrating to your wife that she can always rely on you. You want to be her hero, so show her that you can look past the pettiness of her frustrated moods by helping her find her inner emotional balance again.

Bamboo Flooring Problems – What Are the Common Problems Associated With Bamboo Flooring?

Although bamboo floors are lovely, environmentally friendly, and priced within the average person’s budget, there are still a few issues that may arise with this type of floor. It is best to know about potential pitfalls, so you can judge the risks associated with bamboo flooring, and the costs of maintenance and upkeep. This will help you make an informed decision before installing such a floor, and perhaps make it so you avoid these problem areas to begin with.

Very High Expectations

Because bamboo flooring is becoming trendier each day, with more and more home improvement shows and store sale people touting its wonders, people’s expectations of its performance may be too high. It is a very durable, affordable, beautiful, and “green” product, however, this does not mean it is maintenance free once installed. The key to being satisfied with your purchase is having reasonable expectations based on the specific product and or/line of bamboo flooring you purchase. It is also essential to realize the floor will need at least some minimal upkeep.

Manufacturing Problems

Besides having inflated expectations from the sale’s pitch, some manufactures produce a subpar product. You need to read reviews of specific products to see how consumer s rate companies, and how that specific floor is performing a few years after installation. These reviews are easy to find online. Some manufactures use shoddy workmanship and make inferior flooring. Do your research! Sometimes a price is too good to be true, and remember that you get what you pay for. Lower quality floors, made where manufactures do not have proper quality control in their factories, will often buckle with changes in heat and humidity, and visual imperfections will be more easily seen. Higher quality products not only last longer, they remain looking new and fresh through the years and increase the resale value of your property.

Maintenance Problems

Once you settle on the best quality floor you can afford, it is important to maintain it so that it remains the envy of your neighbors. If you believe every claim made about your bamboo floor’s durability and cleaning schedule, you may be more likely to be lazy and treat the floor as if it can take a huge amount of abuse – because this is what you were sold on! It is important to be diligent in the frequency of cleaning your floor, in the cleaning products you select, in properly padding heavy furniture with non-rubber backed coasters, and in placing door mats at the room’s entrances. There are a lot of maintenance guides out there to help you properly care for your bamboo floor, and these are worth reading. You don’t want to clean too frequently or use products that will void the manufacturer’s warranty, and these guides will advise you on such matters.

Moisture and Stains

Bamboo comes from Asia; it is grown in many regions with very tropical climates. Thus it has a built in resistance to water. Even so, it is important to not be overconfident about its potential. You need to make sure your room is not overly humid. If you ever spill anything, you need to wipe it up as soon as possible, and follow the cleaning instructions found in your guide. Too much moisture can cause the floor to expand and contract too much, and possibly even stain! Many people use a polyurethane coating or wax to protect their floors and keep them shiny and new looking!

Investing In Quality Pumps for Saltwater Disposal in the Oilfields, a Primer

Hi Alex, Thanks for your time today!

1-Can you tell our readers about your company and background? 2-With respect to SWD wells what should operators keep in mind?

M and M Pump and Supply consists of three companies: 1. M and M Pump and Supply Inc., Clay City and Mattoon, Illinois selling Oilfield Tubulars and Sucker Rods, Tanks both steel and fiberglass, downhole oilfield pumps, positive displacement and centrifugal pumps, pipe, valves and fittings and just about anything that is used to drill, complete, or equip an oil or gas well. We also service and repair natural gas engines, salt water pumps and have a complete inventory of fibergass pipe and fittings for salt water injection lines. 2. PD Service Co., Clay City, Illinois furnishing oilfield trucking, oilfield construction crews, tank trucks, tubing and casing testing and inspection crews, frac and swab tank rentals, steamers and oilfield threading services. 3. McCoy Machine and Gear Co., Flora, Illinois furnishing complete oilfield machine shop, new and rebuilt pumping units and mobile service trucks for field repair of pumping units and salt water pumps and manufacturing Miller Sand Pumps.

With regards to salt water disposal and injection wells I would recommend running a good string of Sealtite Plastic or CPVC lined tubing to protect against internal corrosion and being sure to protect the anular space between the casing and the outside of the tubing with a good corrosion inhibitor, oxygen scavenger and biocide in either liquid or pellet form. If you are water flooding be sure to choose a good producer for your injection well as these seem to make the best injection wells with the best waterflood results. Needless to say have a petroleum engineer analyze your field for recoverable barrels of oil and desired injection rates per injection well to improve you odds of the best results from your waterflood. Establish a good chemical program for your injected water for control of corrosion and scaling tendencies. Starting this program immediately is vital to minimizing problems down the road that could lead to excessive pulling of both producing and injection wells in a waterflood. Be sure to have a chemical company analyze injected and produced water for compatibility to prevent possible severe scaling and corrosion down the road.

3-What type of pumps work best for SWD wells? How do they work?

Everything with regards to pump selection for a salt water disposal or injection well is defined by barrels per day of water to be injected and maximum pressure required to inject the water at that rate. Because most injection wells require anywhere from moderate(300 to 700PSI) injection pressures to very high pressures(over 2000PSI) a positive displacement pump such as a plunger or piston pump or a diaphragm style pump is usually required. All positive displacement pumps require good water supply at the pump intake and it is very important to be sure this is achieved either by oversizing and flooding the pump suction or charging the pump suction with a properly sized centrifugal pump. Pumps of this type are usually powered by either an electric motor or gas engine with adequate horsepower to handle the maximum flow rate and pressures that the pump will be subject to. Brake Horsepower requirement is calculated by the following formula: Gallons per minute times Maximum Pressure times a constant of .000648 equals Maximum Brake Horsepower Required.

4-I’ve heard much about Hydra-Cell and Cat pumps, are there any other brands to consider?

Some of the more common brands of Positive Displacement Pumps are Gaso, Wheatley, Oilwell, Gardner Denver, Bethlehem(B-Master), Kerr, Myers, Union, Ingersoll Rand, Cat, Hydracell among others. The key to choosing which pump works best for your application once again depends on barrels per day to be injected and the pressure needed to accomplish this. Another key consideration would be having a distributor that stocks parts for and services the brand of pump you are going to purchase so that downtime for pump servicing and repairs can be kept to a minimum. Hydracell Pumps are in most cases less expensive than plunger pumps if you can find one that meets your volume and pressure requirements. These pumps will also probably require completea replacement after 5 to 10 years in service. Big plunger pumps such as the Gaso, Wheatley, Oilwell, Gardner Denver, Kerr, B-Master can run for 40 to 50 years if properly mainained and rebuilt every 3 to 10 years depending on service conditions.

Cat pumps fill the niche for low volume, very high pressure applications particularly well at a reasonable cost, but replacement part costs tend to be quite expensive when the pump needs serviced. Probably the most important thing you can do for any of the above pumps is to develop a good preventative maintenance program with particular attention being paid to the condition of the oil in the power end of the pump. Pumps in this service frequently run 20 hours a day or more so it is imperative that a daily preventative maintenance inspection is made and that fluid change intervals are followed religiously.

5-Do certain brands have pros and cons?

6-Any maintenance or ongoing usage precautions to take with these type of pumps?

#5 and #6- I partially answered these questions when responding to question #4. Other maintenance considerations. Be sure you purchase a packing gland wrench for tightening plunger packing on plunger pumps as well as a hammer style valve cover wrench for pumps with threaded valve covers. Some pumps use a deep socket packing gland wrench and some require a spanner wrench. In addition to daily power end gear oil inspection, plunger packing should be tightened if plungers are leaking more than 3 to 5 drips per plunger per minute, however it is imperative not to overtighten plunger packing as ceramic plungers which are usually used in salt water service will break if subject to heat over 150F and this can occur if packing is overtightened. It is usually best to let plungers run for several minutes after tightening packing, turn the pump off and then feel the ceramic part of the plunger and make sure it is not hot to the touch, if it is your packing is probably too tight.

If you have an injection well that goes on vacuum and want to suck your tanks dry, install a check valve with a heavy spring which will not allow the well to suck your tanks down. This will prevent plunger breakage due to the pump going on air and sucking any BS on top of your water into the pumps valves. I would also recommend installing a Y-strainer on the intake line to the pump to prevent debris from plugging the pumps valves. Be sure to inspect this strainer on a regular basis and after the initial hour of pump operation and after 24 hours of initial operation, as there is likely to be debris in newly assembled lines that could plug the strainer. When running Hydracell Pumps check the gear oil daily as if you poke a hole in one of the diaphragms salt water will have direct access to the pumps powerend. Finally be sure to oversize the pumps intake(suction) line and use as few 90 degree els as possible to insure adequate fluid supply to the pump. Remember the old adage that 6-90degree els nearly equals a bull plug!!

7-Should an operator over compensate and buy a pump that is much higher Horse Power than is indicated?

A certain amount of safety factor needs to be built into all pump and motor design in the event injection volumes exceed original estimates or more pressure is required to dispose of injected water than was originally estimated. It is also wise not to run any pump at its maximum recommended RPM as this will lead to higher maintenance and rebuild costs than a pump being run at 80 to 85% of its maximum capabilities. I would recommend designing your pump system at 75 to 80% of a pumps volume and pressure capabilities. This will allow for some additional volume and pressure if needed without causing maintenance headaches down the road.

8-What is a common problem you see in the field?

Frequent problems which I see in the field are: A. Failure to properly maintain powerend oil quality leading to expensive powerend overhauls. B. Failure to oversize pump suction lines and allow for adequate water supply to the pumps intake valves leading to premature valve failure. C.Failure to install a bypass valve on pump discharge lines leading to catastrophic falure such as a broken pump crankshaft is someone forgets and turns the pump on against a closed valve. D. Failure to screen incoming water to pump and failure to regularly inspect screen in suction Y-Strainers, particularly when water is being hauled into the lease by tank trucks(Note; A settling tank is best used when water is being hauled into the lease by tank trucks.) E. Failure to install a bleeder valve on pump discharge line to allow for bleeding any trapped air out of the pump. Failure to religiously follow a daily and weekly pump inspection and maintenance schedule.

9-Please Tell our readers about how to handle corrosive fluids in the pump?

In order to properly prevent corrosion in a salt water pump, the fluid end of the pump should generally be cast from either aluminum bronze or 316 Stainless Steel which are highly corrosion resistant. In some brines which are not too corrosive and where pressures are not to high a bronze fluid end will provide satisfactory service at a price which is significantly less expensive than aluminum bronze or stainless steel. However, standard brass has limited resistance to hydrogen sulfide and will often wash out quickly when handling brines that carry H2S. It is also a good idea to chemically treat injected water for both corrosion and scaling tendencies as this will prevent your injection well from plugging off and protect your downhole tubulars.

Get The Lean GQ Look Rather Than The Bulky Body Builder Look

Guys, when it comes to your body, what would you like it to look like in turns of physical build? Do you want the bulky muscular “Arnold” look or the lean muscular “GQ” look?

There is no right or wrong answer as it’s all personal preference. BUT, you really need to understand how to achieve both if you want to achieve either.

What we’ll outline in the articles are the basics for the GQ look.

To understand the “look” I’m referring to, open up a GQ magazine or picture the Calvin Klein type of male model. they have more muscle mass than the average person but they have a lot less body fat in terms of percentage. Also notice, their muscles look like they are constantly flexed, right? (the proper term for this is muscle density)

If you are a gym goer, you’ve probably noticed that most people who constantly go to the gym don’t have this “muscle density” look, right? So, why do these models have this constant look? I say they have this constant look because most of those types of models have to be ready for a photo shoot at any given moment.

Maybe it’s genetics. Maybe it’s their trainer. Maybe it’s their diet. Maybe it’s none of these things.

Do you know you can achieve this look as well, regardless of how you look now. to achieve any look, you just need to have the proper muscle building program to get you to the physique you’re looking for. Here are some tips on how to do it.

Eating Habits

First of all, eating. Now, before you take things what out of whack, learn to eat smart. If someone says eat 6 times a day, they do NOT mean 6 big meals a day. A snack, such as an apple, could be considered 1 of the six times a day, get it?

So think about it, if you want your body to be leaner, then you must eat leaner. Fasting every so often is good, but fasting too often is bad. You need fuel for your body, but the kind of fuel you put in determines how you may end up. Starving yourself is counter productive, so make sure you do eat while getting that leaned out look, ok?

Abs

Yes, the six pack abs. You’ve read about them before and you will read about them again and again. They key to a nice lean look is the six pack abs. Doing crunches and sit ups may not get the results you’re looking for. Planks and hanging leg raises is an exercise you should focus on. These strengthen the ab muscles without getting the bulk muscle look. then, when you eat right and lower you body fat percentage, the strong muscles will show through.

Lower Body

If you want the leaner look, then you may want to consider NOT doing squats and dead lifts. Oh sure, some say those are great for toning your rear end, but the also create the bulky leg look, so you may want to shy away from them. An alternative may be intense cardio of some sort. You may even consider an HIIT cardio workout or a Fartlek type of cardio workout 3 times a week. You’ll achieve proper tone without the bulkiness in the lower body.

Upper Body

A trick some of the leaner body folks do is to skip the traditional bench press altogether. Start doing chest workouts that most body builders avoid, like incline bench. Your chest will get a different look that is more in line with the model guys then the bodybuilder guys, which is what you’re shooting for to begin with, right?

But, there is also your arms and shoulders. Make sure you work them out, but don’t over do it. Working out to fatigue isn’t always beneficial for the lean muscle look.

Understand what and how to work out and you’ll be well one your way to that lean look. Couple that thought process with the other tips I outline will give you a nice foundation to get where you need to go!

Zumba – A Great Way to Burn Calories

ZUMBA is a great form of exercise that feels like it isn’t exercise when you’re doing it. OK, maybe that depends on your instructor. The basic premise of Zumba is to ramp the heartbeat up and down at controlled points to maximize your calorie burn. Zumba does this by incorporating Latin dance steps (such as the Cha Cha, Mambo, and Samba) with Hip Hop dance moves and finally a bit of Belly Dance moves. Your instructor really depends on how much of each style you receive during the class. In my experience, an instructor whose background is aerobic exercise, you will find a more aerobic workout and not so much of a focus on specific dance steps. An instructor who has a dance background will tend to incorporate more specific dance steps into their routines.

Zumba participants generally wear comfortable workout clothes and perhaps a hip scarf. The clothing varies from participant to participant. Some like to wear long sleeves and sweat (or they are new to Zumba), some like to wear shorts and a tank top, some like to get into the grove and wear fancier workout clothes. The hip scarves also vary, from those who prefer to wear a hip scarf that makes noise via jingly coins to those who wear a hip scarf with a bit of sparkle and no jingle. A Zumba class full of participants wearing coin hip scarves increases the energy intensity in the class as you can hear/feel your movements as you go.

The calorie burn one receives from a Zumba class is insane. Depending upon how hard you push yourself, your calorie burn can reach up to 900 calories in a one hour class. To intensify your workout, try things like bringing your legs higher when you jump or tilt your pelvis in when doing an ab workout to get a little extra crunch. If you are just starting out, you may want to test your abilities in the first Zumba class you take. How comfortable are your joints when you jump? Does anything hurt when you move a certain way? Zumba allows the participant to customize their workout to fit their level. By all means, do not injure yourself while working out, but try to increase your intensity each time you participate in a class to maximize your calorie burn. What other form of exercise out there provides fun while getting a great workout? Try out a local Zumba class in your area. Search for them in Google, local gyms and dance studios. Have fun!
