Battery Design: Flat Plate Versus Tubular

The flat plate and tubular are the two types of UPS batteries that are available to the users these days. Companies such as American Power Conversion (APC) manufacture all sorts of UPS models, some with flat plate batteries and others with tubular batteries. Basically, it is the design of the positive plate that differentiates a flat plate battery from a tubular battery. The biggest difference is that the flat plate design comprises of a tough alloy grid, which contains a special compounded paste, while the tubular design comprises of parallel tubes that contain lead oxide. Learning how these two types of batteries are produced can help in understand the differences in their performance.

Flat Pasted Plate Batteries

A tough cast iron grid made of lead alloy that usually contains around three to six percent of antimony is used to produce a flat plate battery. A specially compounded mixture that contains lead oxide water, and sulfuric acid is used to paste the grids on an automatic machine. A process in which the active material is converted in the plate to the required composition is used to cure the plates once they have been pasted. As a result of this the paste sets to a hard mass similar to cement. The plates are very tough and striking them produces a ringing bell-like sound. Apart from being consistent, batteries made of flat plates possess the following traits:

– A flat plate battery performs excellently

– These batteries are quite long lasting

– These batteries are durable and tough

– The pasted material in the plates is also long lasting

– The plates in the battery also have a glass wrap over them

Tubular Batteries

The tubes in tubular batteries have a more complex design, and the manufacturing process used to produce them is quite different too. Firstly, the grid is produced, which comprises of a sequence of 15 parallel lead spines cast onto a bar or rods. Lead alloy containing six to ten percent antimony is used for fabricating the grid. A sequence of parallel porous glass fiber tubes is attached over the grid spines. A plastic fitting is knocked onto the ends once the tubes are filled. The lead oxides are then converted to lead sulfate by soaking the assembly in dilute sulfuric acid. Batteries made of tubular plates possess the following traits:

– A tubular battery performs decently, but not as efficiently as a flat panel battery

– Tubular batteries are as long lasting as flat-panel batteries.

– The active material and lead in these batteries do not last long

– Cell life is shortened due to sensitivity to active material shedding

– Plate area is significantly lost due to sensitivity to top bar breakage

– Spines can end up off center of the tube


While users do not pay much attention to their UPS battery, but flat plate and tubular batteries are significantly different from each other. From the mentioned facts, it is apparent that the flat plate design is more efficient, long-lasting and reliable. Nonetheless, companies like APC manufacture UPS models with both flat plate and tubular batteries.

Preparing Wood Stove Fuel

When choosing your wood, you must consider the different species of wood so to get full value for your time and money. Some species of wood are harder, or denser then other species. The denser the wood, the more heat value will be available to you. The hardwood species, for example oak and maple, will burn longer and maintain a better bed of coals in your wood stove, which will be very desirable for those long winter nights. Nothing is worse than waking up to a cold house and a cold stove. A cold stove can take a considerable amount of time and effort to fire up and get the house warm.

The area that you live in, often times will determine what type of wood that is available. If softwood is the is your only choice, you still will be able to stay nice and warm, especially if you own one of the new certified high technology wood stoves, as the air for combustion is more controllable. You will be refueling the stove more frequently, and possibly having to get up in the middle of the night to keep the stove burning. Ideally you would use hardwood for those cold winter month, then use the softwood for fall and spring. The softwood would have an advantage during the milder parts of winter as the wood will start easier and cool down quicker for those warmer days.

Getting ready for those cold winter days starts no later than the spring prior to winter. If you wait to long and you cannot acquire a seasoned wood, then you may as well turn on your primary expensive heat source. Unseasoned wood has moisture content of 35 to 50%. Seasoned or dry wood has moisture of 12 to 20%. By cutting no later then the spring you have the necessary time to season the wood. Cut the wood in the desirable length that enables you to load the wood stove easily. If you cut to long you will be fighting the wood to load the stove. After the wood is cut and split you will need to stack the wood in single rolls so that the summer sun can warm the wood and the breezes can blow away the moisture. Before winter starts, you need to store the wood in a dry place to ensure that the wood has the best chance for combustion. If possible it is even more desirable to bring the wood into the home prior to burning to allow the wood to warm up to room temperature allowing the wood stove to burn hotter and more efficient, which will benefit you by consuming less wood.

Recipe for Sweet Potato Cobbler

This southern style dessert recipe serves six people and it tastes so good. The combination of sweet potatoes, nuts, orange, sugar, eggs, flour and more results in a really mouthwatering dessert. Serve it alone or with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, orange sorbet or whipped cream.

What you will need:

18 oz canned sweet potatoes

1 tablespoon orange juice

1/2 cup chopped pecans

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons melted butter

2 tablespoons flour

2 beaten eggs

1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons light brown sugar

2 tablespoons white sugar

1/2 cup evaporated milk

How to make it:

Drain and mash the canned sweet potatoes with the white sugar, 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar and 1/4 cup of the butter. Beat in the evaporated milk, eggs and orange juice. Lightly butter the slow cooker and transfer the sweet potato mixture to it.

Mix the flour, pecans and the remaining brown sugar and butter. Spread this mixture over the top of the sweet potato mixture. Cover the crockpot and cook for about 3 and a half hours on high. Serve hot.

5 Methods of Joining Plastic Parts to Each Other

Making plastic parts is one of the most efficient ways to design and manufacture parts. In numerous cases these days, it is necessary to join two or more plastic parts together. Fortunately there are a wide variety of ways you can do this. I want to show you five of the best ways to accomplish this just like the pros and not like the other guys.

Before we discuss the exact methods you will need some information about what you are trying to accomplish. Why is this important? To choose the best method to join two parts you must know exactly why the parts need to be joined. There is a big difference depending on your design needs how the part should go together. Here some examples of things to look at on your list of requirements.

  • Are the parts permanently or temporarily joined (example: a door for batteries
  • How often do the parts need to be separated (if not permanent)
  • How much dust resistance and/ or waterproofness are needed if any?
  • Is the product used where it will touch sensitive areas of the human body? (medical instruments, toys or eating utensils)
  • Will the part be subjected to heating and cooling? (like in a car parked outside)
  • How much time is required to assemble the parts?
  • Will the parts be machine assembled?

Make a list of your requirements which will help you find the best way to find out how to proceed. Now let us get to some solutions.

Using screws is a very common way to assemble plastic parts. The advantages are that anyone with the ability to turn a screw can assemble the parts. Screws can be used to join plastic parts to different materials like metals and composites. This is also easy for smaller volumes. That said one disadvantage is that it costs more time, money and labor as the number of parts increases. Assembly labor or expensive machinery is required for high volumes. Screws do allow for disassembly but wear out the screw pocket if the product is disassembled frequently. Using some adhesive will lock in the screw.

The general practice is to have the hole molded on one part for the screw to go through. The part to be joined to the first will have a pilot hole. The pilot hole is smaller than the screw threads. When the screw is first driven into the pilot hole it will cut into it. This gives a strong joint for the screw to clamp both parts together. Using a metal insert can increase strength of the joint and allow more frequent disassembly.

As a general rule use screws with fat heads like a pan head or button head screw. Flat head screws should not be used as the cone shape head will over stress the plastic. Be cautious if you are joining rubber parts with screws.

One of the most popular methods for joining two plastic pieces is using hooks. A hook, sometimes called a snap, looks like a barb on a fishing hook. This hook snaps into a slot in the part it is being joined to. A hook can be setup for either a permanent or temporary joint.

If the hook is shaped like a fish hook with a very pointed barb, and the slot is not accessible that is ideal for a permanent joint. Toys and small appliances frequently use this attachment method.

If you want a removable joint, like a battery cover, the hook should have no back angle so it acts more like a detent. A detent is better if the parts must be removed a put back together. One good example of this is a Fastex buckle which can be found at here. You probably have seen these on luggage, baby seats and outdoor gear.

Adhesives can be used to join parts easily as well. Adhesives, like epoxy, are not only good at bonding plastics but can be used to bond plastics to metal, composite, or ceramic. If correctly selected, the joint can also seal water, dust and other contaminates out. Since each adhesive is different, follow the directions and warnings given by the adhesive manufacturer. You should consider using adhesives as permanent.

Be careful when selecting adhesives if the product will experience hot and cold temperatures in regular cycles. Some adhesives will be better choices depending on the conditions the product is subjected to. Be sure to look at which materials you are bonding and make sure the adhesive will work with all parts to be bonded. Special care should be taken with adhesives if the parts they are used on come in contact with sensitive body parts.

On approach that gets over looked is to not have separate parts at all. Storage boxes can use a living hinge to allow the box and lid to be molded as one part. One example is this battery box. Living hinges are a great way to simplify no matter if you plan to make a 100 or 1 million parts. Material selection is very important with living hinges so do your homework. Living hinges are generally a good way to attach parts but special steps must be taken if the hinge is permanently bent.

In a high volume production setting, sonic welding can be a fast and inexpensive method to joint two parts. In many cases the two parts are mirrored (they often are the left and right halves of some larger part) giving the parts a natural joining area. Sonic welding requires both parts to be specially designed for the task and requires a sonic welder. Once you have the proper machinery and setup, welding the material takes a few seconds. As with other methods, check to see if the materials will join together. Sonic welding makes good joints but can sometimes not align the parts exactly. The designer should make allowances for any misalignment that may occur.

Now that you know about these five methods of joining plastics part together and understand what you need to know before you choose one of them let review what I have said here. Make sure you know whether a joint is permanent or temporary. Check to see what the other requirements are. Select the method that best suits your needs.

How Can You Play Snooker Like Ronnie O’Sullivan?

There are several methods to use in order to increase your ability to play snooker. The traditional method is to put in 10,000 hours of practice time on a table and see how your form turns out. This method usually involves some coaching and watching how other people play. This traditional method causes a player to become as good as the players he surrounds himself with. The challenge of this is that a player ends up becoming as good as everyone that he plays snooker with. In this type of setting, a player can improve quite quickly until he or she reaches a plateau. This plateau then becomes the limit of skill that a player possesses and becomes incredibly difficult to surpass. Only through sheer grit, determination and constant practice can a player get their game up to the next level.

The reason for this is simple. If you can play good enough as everyone else, you end up believing that this is as good as you can become. On the other hand if you played with players who were running centuries very frequently, you would, just through thought vibration, morphic resonance and the influence of the environment on your subconscious mind, end up adopting the skills required to increase your ability and subconscious beliefs about what your snooker playing capabilities are.

This is why the Asians who were in the final 32 of the 2010 World Snooker Championships have been able to play so well. They have been practicing with Ronnie O’Sullivan. Just by hanging around with a genius of the game, will effect your playing ability. You would be able to see and hear how he hits the ball. You would be able to feel his energy and absorb some of his essence. This would have a far greater effect on your ability to play Snooker like Ronnie O’Sullivan than any other method.

Since you can’t always have the luxury of being able to play Ronnie O’Sullivan, are there any other effective ways to be able to absorb his essence into your own game?

One of the most effective means to creating change is through subconscious programming. Dr. Bruce Lipton Ph.D and author of the award winning book ‘The Biology of Belief’ says that 95% of all our behaviour and actions, or MORE, is directly attributed to the programs in our subconscious mind. Bruce Lipton has been a scientist since 1968 and I’m not going to argue with him.

So since our subconscious mind is in charge of at least 95% of what we do, doesn’t it make sense to do something with our subconscious mind to improve our Snooker game? Imagine how much better you would play if you could have the Ronnie O’Sullivan subconscious Snooker program in your head. How much better would you play? How much easier would the game be if you hit the ball and thought about the game just like he did? What if you could have this program running on automatic pilot? Is this even possible?

It is possible although our understanding of the human mind isn’t good enough to really be able to suck up all of Ronnie’s snooker brains. However, there are technologies that exist that allow us to capture some of his ability.

The ways to really capture as much of his playing abilities, comes down to just one thing. And that is to completely influence your subconscious mind with the belief that you can run centuries and knock in 147’s. If your subconscious mind had the information programmed into it that believed knocking in tons was easy, you would be making centuries.

Is that hard to believe? Consider this…there are ten year old kids who are knocking in centuries. More and more are doing it every single day. The more we are exposed to more and more people knocking in tons, the greater our belief system will support the idea of doing it ourselves.

Its just like Roger Bannister and the four minute mile. Before him, nobody could do it. After he did it, hundreds of people have been able to do it.

So how can we get this reprogramming mind stuff into our heads if we’re not a ten year old kid?

First of all, the reason kids can learn so much is because between the ages of 2 and 6, children are primarily in a theta brainwave frequency. Theta is the brainwave that allows the subconscious mind to download new information. This is why children can learn 3 languages at once and learn to play pianos, chess and golf. Look at Tiger Woods, Bobby Fischer and Mozart. Are they geniuses? Yes and their parents took advantage of their kids hyper learning state. This hyper learning state known as a hypnogogic trance or a theta brainwave state is what allows them to download all that information.

Since we can’t go back to our childhood, what we can do is get our brains into a theta brainwave frequency by means of an entrainment audio. There are several other methods to get into a theta brainwave frequency such as taking a super hot bath or shower. This is why people have so many great idea when they are taking a shower. Their subconscious mind is being accessed and all that subconscious creative information is allowed to flow out due to their brain being in this theta brainwave frequency.

So once you’re in a theta brainwave you can learn stuff much faster.

So how does this relate to being able to play Snooker like Ronnie O’Sullivan?

In Snooker-Cybernetics there is a sample module that allows the listener to go into a theta brainwave frequency.

While you are in this hyper learning state, you would hear Ronnie O’Sullivan giving you the suggestions required to play like him.

That would mean your subconscious mind would be programmed while you’re in a hyper learning hypnogogic trance just like a kid, while hearing Ronnie O’Sullivan giving you his own personal advice on how to play Snooker like him.

Switch to Healing – Part 3 – The Story of Observed Experiential Integration (OEI)

In this series of three articles titled Switch to Healing, I discuss trauma and outline a path that a trauma victim could take to get fast relief from trauma, however small the trauma might have been that still keeps them in a psychic prison. In parts 1 and 2, we discussed the nature of trauma experience, the symptoms that arise out of unresolved or trauma that has not yet been effectively treated, the types of trauma, trauma triggers, night school and brain magic, trauma treatment and treatment hazards. In part 3, we will look at the characteristics and benefits of a new, modern power therapy for fast trauma relief.

Roots of “One Eye Integration”

In the past 12 years, a series of psychotherapy treatment techniques have been developed by two innovative clinicians in Vancouver, B.C., under the title, Observed Experiential Integration, formerly One Eye Integration (OEI). Since those first developments, hundreds of clinical counselors, psychologists and physicians all over the world have been using OEI techniques with great success. One of the techniques is called “switching” which lends us the title of this report.

You may have heard about EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as an effective treatment for trauma. OEI is a progression from EMDR which is an excellent treatment modality for trauma that most people respond to when they think of an upsetting event and process the feelings and sensations with both eyes open. As with EMDR, OEI is well researched and is a proven effective treatment for trauma and trauma-like symptoms.

Overwhelming symptoms

Not all trauma sufferers can bring up the sensations, feelings, thoughts and images associated with the trauma with both eyes open, and still function in therapy well enough to experience forward movement and healing. For them it is more effective to work with one eye at a time, compared to EMDR which works with both eyes open. In all experiences that impact our brains, each hemisphere is impacted to a greater or lesser extent. In most cases of trauma, the right hemisphere is impacted more severely, and with OEI the trauma sufferer can work with the left, or less intense, eye first, to lower the intensity to a level where the right eye can be open for processing.

Unable to talk or use language

OEI is also effective where a person cannot even bear or is unable to put into language the thoughts, feelings and sensations they are experiencing when they float back to the traumatic incident(s). With OEI they can merely bring up the memories without speaking and the healing can take place.

Becoming unstuck at any age

OEI is an amazing trauma therapy that uses our visual pathways from the eyes to the brain and which works for all ages. I have used it successfully with clients from 9-86. It helps us deal with being stuck, where we are doing something we don’t really want to do or not doing something we would really like to do. It also helps us deal with emotions that are stirred up such as fear, anxiety, sadness, guilt, shame, anger or conflict. OEI will help you change memories from present upset to past perspective.

Scientific research for evidence-based treatment

As with EMDR, OEI is evidence-based in that it is backed by recent properly conducted scientific research. In a 2002-2003 study, the participants who received OEI treatment for 3 1-hour sessions experienced a significant reduction of their trauma symptoms. In a 2004-2007 study, which included a 3-month follow-up, participants who received 2-3 OEI treatments demonstrated significant reduction in trauma symptoms compared to 2 other interventions.

Simple techniques of OEI

OEI uses a variety of techniques from “switching” to “massaging glitches” to “sweeping”. These terms may sound “weird” to the reader, yet they exemplify the simplicity of the processes that will help you find fast relief, and research supports that a “weird” therapy works.

As an advanced certified OEI therapist, the author is able to help you process the present upsetting symptoms of past trauma safely and quickly.

Use OEI soonest for easy relief

OEI (and EMDR) work best when delivered as soon as possible after a disturbing event. There are less layers of complexity for you to work through so therapy will be easier and quicker than if left for a long time. The best approach is to act soon.

Use of OEI at home

Once you have experienced the fast positive relief that OEI brings by working with an advanced certified OEI therapist, you will be able to “take-out’ these techniques to use at home for immediate relief when you are triggered and not in session. Your advanced certified therapist should advise when a procedure is safe for you to use outside of a trauma therapy session.

ADHD Teens: What the EF! Executive Functions Skill: Goal-Directed Persistence

Executive functions (EF) skills are skills required to help perform or accomplish everyday life tasks. These skills are controlled by the frontal lobe of the brain just behind the forehead. The frontal lobes are the last areas of the brain to fully develop. Executive functions skills begin to develop in infancy and continue to mature into early adulthood.

Goal-directed persistence is an executive functions skill. It is the capacity or drive to follow through to the completion of a goal and not to be put off by other demands or competing interests. You may not realize that you have used goal-directed persistence many times. You used it when playing with toys (i.e., LEGOs®), learning to make your bed, brushing your teeth, playing a sport, finishing a long-term project, etc. Remember when you were learning to tie your shoes? You wanted to tie your shoes all by yourself. They were steps to be learned. The steps had to be performed in a certain order. You willingly practiced over and over. You persisted until that one special day it all came together and you tied your shoes all by yourself!

Even after you were first able to tie your shoes by yourself, once in a while frustration would set in if tying your shoes didn’t always happen on the first try. In spite of this frustration you stuck with the task that you completed it. You able to rely on your memory and self talk to get to the process of successfully tying your shoes.

When a teen has difficulties with goal-directed persistence, it is hard for them to:

  • complete a homework assignment
  • finish a chore
  • read a novel
  • start a task
  • stick with a task that is boring (to the teen)
  • get back to a task if they get interrupted (by themselves or others)
  • delay gratification (i.e., save money over a certain period of time for something specific)

We can help our teens strengthen their executive functions skill of goal-directed persistence by using the following strategy, PERSIST:

Purpose of goal

Establish steps to goal

Reward yourself as you accomplish steps along the way

Electric Golf Trolley Maintenance

So what can go wrong with your trolley I hear you ask?

Well a short list would include starting and stopping, not completing the round, maybe quitting all together! So how to identify possible problems early and save you more cost of repair on major electrical components.

Intermittent Faults.

If you find your trolley has an intermittent fault this can normally be cause buy a break down of one or more electrical components, example the roller switch fitted in the handle to control speed is a carbon track potentiometer which over time will wear. This wear will make or break your trolleys electrical circuit causing a starting or stopping action and you should change this part straight away do not continue to keep playing with your trolley which could result in a controller fault.

In addition you may have worn or low brushes in the motor, you will normally find symptoms of your trolley not starting at all, if you give it a shake or kick (not recommended) the trolley will start and run for some time then stop again. Unfortunately most trolleys today have the brushes built inside and can be an expert job to change but you should change them before more damage can occur.

Other less known starting and stopping issues can come from wiring or the safety on/off switch. This will take some more sorting out a process of working through your cart bit by bit until you find the weak area you may even want to do away with some of the plugs and solder some of the wire together. Again I would recommend expert advice in this area.

Battery Faults.

Battery’s cause some fake trolleys faults, for example you may find your trolley runs along fine for 9 holes then all of a sudden stops. You turn off your cart then back on to find your trolley working again. The first thing you think about is ahhh I have a trolley fault but in fact you may have a low battery voltage issue.

‘The Tech Bit’ Modern carts are designed to cut out the circuit board at 9.7 volts giving that your 12 volt battery starts at about 13.8 ish volts and drops under load over the round to 10 ish volts you have no problem if you battery is old then it may drop below 9.7volts were your cart will stop. Turning off the cart re-sets the cart and allows the battery voltage to recover, so the cart will start again making it look like a trolley fault!!!!

If this is happening then its a good idea to have you battery tested using only lead acid battery test equipment never ever ‘drop test’ your battery.

If you do not have a tester or cannot get the use of one then best to borrow an already good battery from a friend or Professional.

This brings me to my next part the borrowed battery. Almost all of the carts now that I see about 70% say have the Anderson Torberry Connections fitted to the battery and cart for attachment and removal. The biggest problem with these connections is that they can fit black to red and v’v. If you reverse the poles then you will for sure blow the controller (unless polarity protected). How can this happen I hear you ask, well its simple the Anderson Connectors can switch sides when putting them together so red on right and black on left and other supplier red on left and black on right. If you borrow a battery with opposite connections and plug into your cart then BANG controller is gone and this can be expensive about £60 to replace in my workshops.

For a Perfectly Cut Lawn – How to Sharpen Your Reel Lawn Mower Blades

If you have determined that the blades of your reel lawn mower need sharpening, there are several ways you can accomplish this. Which method you choose will depend on your personal preference. If you have lots of good arm strength and your reel lawn mower is pretty clean, go with the One Wheel Off Method. If your mower is dirty, use the Two Wheels Off Method so you can clean the parts and re-grease the reel shaft. If you aren’t physically very strong but are handy, you may wish to try the Push Sharpening Method. And finally, if you have drill and socket bit set, give the Drill Bit Method a go.

All Methods

To begin, you will need your push lawn mower, a flat head screwdriver and your sharpening kit.

You may wish take the handle of the mower off, but we found that leaving it in place gives us more stability when we are turning the reel. You may have to try both ways to figure out which is the easiest way for you. Turn your mower upside down. Take the screwdriver and slide it under the wheel cover to pry them off. This will reveal the axle or reel shaft. The wheel is clipped on the shaft by a E ring, sometime also called an C ring. There is a flat spot in the E ring where you can insert the head of the screwdriver and just pop it off.

Pull the wheel off the shaft. Remove the gear that sits on the shaft just inside the wheel. Slide the gear off the shaft and keep it in a safe place. Behind the gear you will find a small piece of metal called a pawl that fits into the shaft. Be careful that the pawl doesn’t slide out without your noticing or you may lose it. From here you may read on or skip to your preferred method of sharpening.

One Wheel Off Method

Seat the sharpening crank over the shaft and pawl. Apply the lapping compound to the cutting edges of the blades. Apply sparingly or it tends to run off the cutting edge, but ensure all cutting surfaces are well covered. Apply to all blades, turning the crank to turn the reel as needed to expose all of the blade. This time you will be turning the reel backwards, or the opposite way from the way it would turn if you were mowing.

Once all the cutting surfaces have been covered with lapping compound, turn the crank to turn the reel backwards for about 7-8 minutes. In some cases, the lapping compound will begin to change colour. You want to see that the cutting edge is bright and shiny with a smooth edge. This is hard work! Take breaks, Tom Sawyer your children into helping, or try using a drill bit (more below) to turn the reel.

Once you think the blades are sharp, repeat the paper test to ensure all cutting surfaces are sharp. If the paper is cut cleanly and easily then you are finished. Adjust the blades if needed.

Replace the gear, the wheel, the E ring (this will be harder to get back in than it was to pry off) and the side cover.

Two Wheels Off Method

With the mower upside down, remove the wheel cover, E ring, gear and pawl from the second side. Keep the pawl in place on the first wheel. Clean out any dirt as needed.

Seat the sharpening crank over the shaft and pawl. Apply the lapping compound to the cutting edges of the blades. Apply sparingly or it tends to run off the cutting edge, but ensure all cutting surfaces are covered. Apply to all blades, turning the crank to turn the reel as needed to expose all of the blade. Push Method

This method initially seems more complicated, but once we experienced the hard work of arm sharpening, the ease of push sharpening seems to far outweigh the slightly longer dis-assembly and reassembly time.

We have not tried this method ourselves but came across it while reading reviews. His suggestion “Remove both wheels, remove and switch ratchet gears from L to R and vice versa, flip over pawls, apply compound and push the mower backwards for about 5 minutes”. From reading this we assume he means to put the left gear and pawl on the right side of the reel shaft and vice versa. We also assume that you would need to replace the wheels to push it backwards.

Once you think the blades are sharp, you would then need to disassemble the wheels, repeat the paper test to ensure all cutting surfaces are sharp. If the paper is cut cleanly and easily then you are finished. Adjust the blades if needed. Switch the gears and pawls back to their original sides and then replace the wheels. We will update you if we try this method to let you know how it works. I think that once it was done once, it wouldn’t seem as confusing and would be a lot easier than cranking by hand.

Drill Bit Method

There were many mentions of turning the reel with a drill. You will need to find a socket attachment that fits over the reel shaft; a 16 or 17 mm socket size were mentioned most often. We would recommend removing the pawl as it might fly out while the drill is turning the shaft. Follow the instructions for dis-assembly as for the One or Two Wheel method. If you removed both gears, we recommend you remove both pawls. Fit the socket over the reel shaft and let the drill do the work for you. No one seems to mention how long to do this but we imagine it would take far less time than by hand. Visually check your blades for sharpness after 3 or 4 minutes. Re-assemble the wheel(s) as for other methods.

That’s it! It may seem complicated at but after the first time you will be a pro!

Starting or Building a Hotel or a Resort is different from other Real Estate Development, due to the amount of capital investment involved, time required to complete the project and the number of specialties and processes involved.

Hotel Development involves careful planning and coordination of various aspects, ranging from the Selection of Land (which can either be purchased or leased) to the final Grand Opening of the Hotel.

Conducting Market Feasibility study and projecting the financial viability of the project is very important to ensure if the project can really generate expected return on investment (ROI).

Formulation a well prepared Business Plan plays a vital role in giving the right direction to the business and also in convincing potential investors, to raise finance from different sources, for Hotel Development, Construction and Operations.

Another important aspect is to contemplate, if the hotel can be run and managed on its own, under its own banner, or is it beneficial to have a Franchise or a Hotel Management Agreement/Contract with a reputed Hotel Operator and the benefits/drawbacks associated with it.

This is followed by getting the whole Project Team on board and formulating and developing a concept, which uniquely identifies the property in the target market and to finally get the preliminary sketches and drawings done for the project.

Hotel Development and Construction process involves various Approvals, Permits and Licences at various stages of the project: before, during and after Hotel Development and Construction.

Next step is designing the various Front and back house areas of the proposed Hotel, including Hotel Exterior, Hotel Entrance, Lobby, Guest Floors and Guest Rooms, Food and Beverage Outlets, Kitchen, Laundry, Technical Areas, Swimming Pool, Spa and other Front and Back of House Areas.

That’s only half way through, which is followed by Hotel Project Cost Estimate, to stay with in Budgets, which subsequently leads to Hotel Construction Scheduling and Planning, to the actual Hotel Project Management.

The whole construction process ends with the handing over of the Project to the Operations Team from the Projects Team, after the clearance of Punch /Snag List.

Selection, Procurement and Installation of various Furniture’s, Fixtures and Equipment (FF&E) for various departments of the hotel is very important too.

Another important aspect is to apply for and get the relevant Star Classification for the Hotel.

Then, its time for the Hotel Pre Opening process of actually getting the Hotel Management and the Operations Team on board.

Hotel Pre opening process involves conducting Staff Training, starting the Marketing and Promotional activity of the Hotel, Formulating Systems and Procedures, Conducting Trial runs and to get all the Operational Supplies and Equipment (OS&E) ready, for smooth operations.

Then, finally, there you go: Hotel Soft Opening before the actual Grand Opening. Soft opening is always recommended before the actual Grand opening, to correct any deficiencies in the systems and processes, before the hotel finally opens, fully.

Well, that’s only when the real challenge starts for the Hotel Owners and the Management, to rightly position the hotel in the target market, create product awareness, setting and maintaining standards, and finally the all important aspect of realizing the expected return on investment through good Gross Operating Profit (GOP), by the right mix of good occupancy and high average daily rate (ADR) and at the same time optimizing the revenue from Food and Beverage Outlets, Conference, Weddings and Banquets.

Why Molds Need Sprues and Vents

Mold making and casting are relatively simple processes. Make a mold of the model you want to reproduce and then pour the casting material into the mold. Wait for it to cure properly before extracting, and viola your artwork is ready!

However, certain technicalities also creep into the picture. For instance, you have to choose the right mold making and casting products that are suitable for the job. At times, release agent, fillers and other items are also required.

Another important point is that as the casting material poured through the sprue, displaces the air in the mold, some air can easily get trapped inside and the casting material will be unable to completely fill the mold. These air pockets cause hollow spaces which can result in an unsightly and deformed cast.

So, how will you get rid of these air traps and pockets when casting silicone rubber or polyurethane resin?

The answer is simple – make vent holes! These are holes that are created in the sides of the mold usually on the high spots of the mold where air tends to first migrate. This allows air to escape from the mold when casting material is being poured inside. Now the casting material can reach all the corners and spots in the mold sans any gaps.

The location and number of vents is important. The holes are ideally placed along the top surface of the mold as air tends to rise to the top of the mold. It’s best to create vents all along the top perimeter of the mold while ensuring that you cover all the high spots. Keep them an inch or so apart. If you are making sprues on the sides of the mold, ensure that they taper up or else the casting material will easily flow out of the mold!

How to?

Vents are made by drilling holes in the surface of the finished mold. Alternatively, you can even insert hollow tubes during the mold making process itself. When removed later, the tunnel will serve as a sprue.

The same vent holes can serve a dual purpose. Apart from working as a vent for air to exit the mold, the hole can also be used as an alternate sprue, to add liquid casting material into the mold. Think injection molding!

In case the same vent is used as a sprue hole and vent, it should be located at the highest point of the mold and be large enough to allow the air to escape even while the material is being poured.

Carefully pour the silicone rubber or polyurethane resin into the sprue hole and continue till it overflows from all the vents. This shows that the material has displaced all the air inside. The material will cure in the vents too and can be cut be cut off after demolding.

Please not that only closed molds require vents. If the mold is open at the top (will become the flat bottom of the cast), the air can escape easily and the material will fill out without requiring any vents.

What’s an LED Light Made Of?

An LED or light emitting diode is an optoelectronic device, which can emit light when it is properly biased. The early light emitting diodes used to emit a light beam of rather low intensity, but the modern ones make up for this set back by proper illumination or emission of light. The light emitted by modern LED’s are in numerous wavelengths, and hence they offer a wide range of colors for us to choose from. The main advantages of LED’s are their limited power consumption and very high efficiency. They are pretty robust, rugged and tough enough to withstand mechanical shocks given to them, they have a very quick switching response and they are very compact.

A light emitting diode is almost similar in construction to a p-n diode; the light emitting diode is made of a semi-conducting material such as silicon or germanium, which is doped with p-type and n-type impurities in order to get a p-n formation. The LED usually consists of the following parts, an epoxy lens or case to cover the semi conducting material, wire bonds, reflective cavity, semi conductor die and anvil post which is also known as the lead frame.

When a potential is applied to this device a current flows through the junction resulting due to the recombination of the holes and electrons, the recombination results in the release of energy in the form of light photons.

The production of the LED’s actually began with red and infrared devices, which contained gallium arsenide. Now many ranges of colors are available when we look for a particular type of LED. Advancements in material science and physics have lead to the manufacture of LED’s with wavelengths shorter then ever.

The light emitting diodes are built upon an n- type substrate with an electrode attached to the p- type layer deposited on the surface. Sapphire substrate is of common use in modern light emitting diodes. Most of the materials for the manufacture of light emitting diodes have a high index of refraction. Much light is reflected at the material air surface interface.

The usual red LED’s most of us have come across are made up of gallium arsenide phosphide, the orange ones can also be made up of the same material, zinc selenide is used for the manufacture of blue LED’s, in this way many chemical compounds form the raw materials for the manufacture of LED’s of different colors.
