Name Plate With M-Seal

Some time back when I had holidays from my school job, I was searching for some paintings and art stuff on Google and then I found this really beautifully made name plate. It seemed to be quite easy and so I obviously thought of starting it without giving a second though. I have some idea how they have made it.

Firstly, take a wooden board of the desired size. Mix equal portion of fevicol and Plaster of Paris and then add some water to make a paste so as to spread it over the wooden board. Take care that you do not add too much of water else it would not stay on the board and will keep flowing. Also, if it is too thick, it may be difficult to apply and have cracks in it. Now, put a thick layer of this mixture on the board and spread it all over. Now give some texture of you choice to it. You may use your fingers, spoon, scale, pen or anything for giving texture. You can make spirals, stars, circles, diamonds or anything that comes to your mind. Now allow it to dry completely for few hours or may be one full day. This is necessary because without drying you would not be able to take the further steps. Now paint the base using acrylic paint of your choice. Make it colorful as you want it to be or may be as simple as you think it should be. And now its time to decorate this coated board. Make some small flowers and leaves using m-seal and stick them on the board. You can also use some dry flowers or pot-pourri to decorate the board. Also make some small curls or stem like things and put them next to the flowers. There is no need to use fevicol to paste these m-seal made things as m-seal would stick itself when it is still wet. Make the face of Ganesha as you can see in the image and put it on top center. Leaving a space of few centimeters put two lines each of m-seal. Let to dry and once the m-seal hardens, you can then paint it.

Although in this image all the things seem to be made of m-seal but you can also try using other things like dry flowers, ready made Ganesha and whatever you feel like. Be creative and try something.

How to Light a Fire in a Wood Burning Stove


Wood burning stoves have a door at the front where the wood is placed and then lit. The smoke that is produced passes up the flue and through the chimney. It sounds very straightforward, however, it is important to use the right type of wood, not only because this affects performance but also because using the wrong type can be damaging.

For this reason it is imperative to use wood that has been dried out (or seasoned) for at least a year. This is a general guideline although different types of wood take varying amounts of time to dry out. Woods that are moist can cause a build up of resin in the chimney and once this resin reaches a certain temperature it can catch light, causing a fire hazard.

To season your wood, cut it to the required size and stack it. Ensure that it is covered but that the sides of the pile are open so that the air can get to them. The wood will also benefit from being kept indoors for several days prior to use. You can check whether your wood is well seasoned because the majority of wood will become split at the ends once dried out.


Kindling is the small pieces of dried wood that are used to start the fire. It can be prepared by chopping up some seasoned firewood into small, long pieces so that it resembles small sticks. Good woods to use for kindling are beech or ash. As well as being seasoned, you should ensure that any wood used in your wood burner has not been painted, varnished or treated with a wood preservative.

Types of Wood

Some types of wood burn better than others so it is best to be aware of the qualities of different types of wood. The suitability of a particular type of wood will depend on various factors such as how easily it lights, how fast it burns, how much heat it gives off and how long it takes to season. Additionally, some woods can be detrimental, such as pine and spruce when freshly cut, as they give off a lot of smoke and sparks, and can produce a thick layer of tar on the walls of the chimney.

Generally, soft woods burn quickly, with hard woods burning more slowly. All woods have different characteristics, but some good choices for wood burning stoves are ash, beech and hazel. Those that are of a low quality for burning include alder, larch, pine and poplar.

Building the Fire

Although there are different methods for lighting a fire in a wood burner, the following method is a good one. Start by removing any ash from inside the stove to ensure that it is not blocking the flow of air into the fire. You should then open the vents at the bottom of the stove as these allow air to circulate and will therefore help the fire to light.

Next, place some scrunched up paper at the bottom of the fire; old newspaper can be handy for this. It is best to use plenty as this will help the flames to spread along the base of the fire. You should then place a layer of kindling sticks on top of the paper so that the sticks cross over each other in different directions.

Lighting the Fire

Once you have finished laying the kindling sticks you can set light to the paper. It is best to do this in several places then shut the stove door. When much of the kindle has become lit, a few large pieces of wood can be placed on the fire. You should ensure that the oven is not completely full by only adding three to four large pieces of wood at a time. As the fire builds, gradually close the bottom air vents and open the air vents at the top of the stove. The idea is to reduce the air supply whilst maintaining a good level of flames.

Optimum Performance

For a wood fire to burn effectively it needs a good supply of air. However, it is important not to overheat the stove, as repeated overheating can cause damage to the metal. You can control the level of the fire by adjusting the air supply using the vents or the grate.

To check whether your stove is burning efficiently take a look at the flames through the glass door. These should be lively and visible. Indications of an inefficient fire are if the flames are slow or intermittent, the fire is smoky, or there is tar on the window. If the window shows signs of tar then there could also be tar deposits in the chimney, which represents a fire hazard. As has already been stressed, it is vital to ensure that the wood has been seasoned before it is used in a wood burning stove, as moist woods can also cause a build-up of resin or tar in the chimney.

To get the best from a wood burner it is best to use it regularly. If a stove is used frequently for slow wood burning then it is recommended to have a hot stove twice a week as this will keep the inside of the chimney dry and avoid an accumulation of tar deposits.

Slow Cooker Method Ideal for Freezer Burned Flank Steak

When meat goes on sale I stock up for the weeks ahead. We have a chest freezer and food items at the bottom can be forgotten. The other day I found a flank steak, (a pricey cut of meat) and saw, to my dismay, that it had freezer burn.

What is freezer burn anyway? It happens after food has been frozen for a long time. Meat develops white spots and the texture and flavor are changed. In fact, red meat may look gray or pale brown. These discolored areas are dry and one of the best ways to cook the meat is with a method that adds moisture — braising or using a slow cooker.

Seeing dry, discolored meat may make you worry about food safety. Don’t worry. According to the USDA, freezer-urned meat is still safe to eat. One edge of the flank steak was burned, but it was such a small area that I left it alone. But the USDA recommends cutting away badly burned sections. “Heavily freezer-burned foods may have to be discarded for quality reasons,” notes the USDA.

Though I had stored the steak i a heavy plastic bag with a zipper closing, over time, it had still developed freezer burn. To add moisture, I decided to cook the steak in seasoned broth. I defrosted the steak in the microwave and cut it in half to fit in my slow cooker. (I have the smallest size.) As it cooks the steak shrinks a bit, so you need to keep this in mind when you plan your meal.

A few hours later, my husband and I were feasting on some of the tastiest steaks we have ever eaten. The slow cooker method will work with balltips, round steak, and other tougher cuts of meat. Usually flank steak is sliced across the grain. With the slow cooking method, however, you cut with the grain or shred the meat. Everyone in the family will enjoy this flavorful recipe.


1 flank steak (1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds)

2 cups no-salt beef stock

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 tomato, chopped

3-4 green onions, white and green parts, chopped

4 ounces mushrooms, sliced

1/4 cup gravy flour (approximate – you may need more)


Salt and pepper to taste

Prepared mashed potatoes


Place cooking bag in slow cooker. Stir ketchup into beef stock. Lay flank steak in cooker. Pour stock mixture over meat and scatter vegetables on top. Cover and cook on high setting for 3 1/2 hours on low or 5 hours on high setting. Remove meat and set on cutting board. Whisk water into flour to make a slurry, making sure there are no lumps. With cooker in high, stir slurry into liquid, and cook until sauce thickens. Season sauce with salt and pepper to taste. Put lid back on slow cooker to keep sauce hot. Shred meat and lay on top of mashed potatoes. Top each serving with a generous amount of sauce. Serve with a green vegetable or salad. Makes 4 generous servings.

Properties of Acrylic Sheets (The Value of Plastic Products)

Have you ever looked at something made of plastic and wondered how it was made? It’s obviously not a metal, wood or plant based derivative. To the educated person, it could be assumed that it’s made by a chemical process, but not much more about it is as easily surmised. Clearly, acrylic thermoplastics have some very interesting characteristics and properties. Of course, they are well known for their crystal clarity and outstanding weather ability. But did you also know they are available in cast sheet, rod, and tube, extruded sheet and film, and compounds for injection molding and extrusion? Acrylic can be used to manufacture brochure holders, racks, counter displays, donation / suggestion boxes and point of purchase (p.o.p) displays among other products.

Below are some general properties of acrylic sheet:

o Strong and resists weathering

o Flexible when compared with glass

o Less breakable than glass

o Abrasion resistant

o Can withstand sunlight for long durations

o Resistant to most chemicals and industrial fumes

o Can transmit or filter ultraviolet light

o Can be cleaned easily

o Can be cut by various methods

o Corrosion resistant

o Good insulator.

Other general properties include the ability to transmit and control light. They are also stable against discoloration, and have superior dimensional stability, as you would notice if you have an acrylic brochure display, counter display, donation / suggestion box or point of purchase (p.o.p) display. Possessing an excellent combination of structural and thermal properties, clear acrylic plastic is as transparent as the finest optical glass:

o Possess a light transmittance of 92%

o Low haze level of approximately 1%

o Index of refraction of 1.49

It also has the ability to be injected with color, producing a full spectrum of transparent, translucent, or opaque colors depending on your needs. This process does no harm in terms of long-term durability; colored acrylics can be used outdoors for a long time. Why? They are formulated to filter ultraviolet energy in the 360-nm and lower band. Other acrylic formulations are opaque to UV light or provide reduced UV transmission.

And how about mechanical properties? Although not known for having many, acrylics can be used for short-term loading. If the intended use is long-term, stresses must be limited to 1,500 psi to avoid surface cracking and deterioration.

Acrylic does well in the cold, as the impact resistance of standard formulations is maintained in these conditions. It should be noted that high-impact acrylic grades have greater impact strength than standard grades at room temperature, but impact strength decreases as temperature drops. Some types of acrylic are even known to resist bullets!

Acrylic plastics are highly scratch resistant, especially among other thermoplastics. It’s a good idea, however, to ensure proper maintenance and cleaning. Keep in mind that abrasion-resistant acrylic sheet is available and has the same optical and impact properties as standard grades. You will see this in many of our brochure displays, racks, counter displays, donation / suggestion boxes and point of purchase (p.o.p) displays.

This brings up a good point – its versatility and adaptability. Are you aware that Jet-aircraft cabin windows are made from acrylic sheet? They do this by inducing molecular orientation during forming. This proves the potential strength of acrylic sheet. How do they react to other chemicals and compounds? Acrylic sheet and moldings resist solutions of inorganic acids and alkalies and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as VM&P naphtha, as well as most detergent solutions and cleaning agents. They are attacked by chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones.

Sir Tom Stoppard, the Early Plays – Dogg’s Our Pet

8. Dogg’s Our Pet

Before looking at one of Sir Tom Stoppard’s major plays, Travesties (1974), it is worth glancing at his short play Dogg’s Our Pet (1971) (Revived to support Cahoots Macbeth 1979) in which the basic idea of Travesties is illustrated. Although a very short and simple play Dogg’s Our Pet is a useful landmark in the evolution of Stoppard’s ideas about language. His interest in the way different forms of language have implicit meanings of their own, distinct from their content, was evident in earlier works, for example, the contrast between poetry and the speaking clock in If You’re Glad I’ll be Frank (1966), and the contrast between Shakespearean and modern language in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1966). In these cases the different languages reflected different ‘mentalities’ or different approaches to life, and this is the starting point for Travesties. At the same time Stoppard has an interest in the philosophy of the relationship between language and meaning, which is the subject matter of Dogg’s Our Pet, indicated, for example, by this speech of George’s from Jumpers (1972):

‘This confusion, which indicates only that language is an approximation of meaning, and not a logical symbolism for it.’ (p.24.)

This is the kind of problem Wittgenstein deals with in the first part of his Philosophical Investigations, and Dogg’s Our Pet is virtually a dramatisation of the opening paragraph of Philosophical Investigations.

Wittgenstein starts by distinguishing between the meaning of a word, and the way a word is used. One of the examples he uses to illustrate his theory is a builder who is constructing a platform and calls out to his mate, “brick”, “block”, “plank” etc. Stoppard lifts this example straight out of Wittgenstein and puts it on stage. The builder is working at a school, his assistant being one of the schoolboys who have a private language of their own. (The boys are public school types, and the builder is working class, so they are people who ‘do not speak the same language in more ways than one. This social theme is not developed in this play, but is taken up again and expanded in Professional Foul).

Sometimes when the builder calls out, “plank”, “brick” etc. the appropriate items are thrown to him, but sometimes an unexpected item is thrown. It is evident that the boys have the same words in their vocabulary, but they use them in a different way. Hayman (R. Hayman: Tom Stoppard: Heinemann) provides a translation: Plank = Here, Slab = Ready, Cube = Thank you etc.

The play is essentially an entertaining puzzle to stimulate the audience into thought about the way we use language. But it also has a significant meaning in that the boys and the builder, working together, do actually manage to construct a platform. Hence although each has a language of his own and is therefore, to an extent, living in a world of his own, their languages and worlds overlap enough for them to communicate and work in an intermediary ‘real world’. This is the central concept for understanding Stoppard’s major play Travesties.

By placing living space on the upper most level within the house, views are more easily captured or perhaps made visible when they might be partially or fully blocked on lower levels.

Within a reverse living floor plan, bedrooms are relegated to the most inactive areas of the house. In some reverse living floor plans, the master bedroom may be included on the upper most level of the home, if the homeowner wants to appreciate the views in the privacy and serenity of its bedroom.

How to Test Whirlpool Refrigerator Defrost Thermostat-Bi-Metal

In order to complete this job you will need the following tools:

Needle nose pliers

phillips screwdriver

1/4″ nut driver

Ohm meter/voltage meter

Please Note: The process for changing a defrost heating element applies to all three styles of refrigerators. The three styles are, side by sides, top freezer mounts, and bottom freezer mounts.

The very first thing that you need to do before you begin your installation is to disconnect the power supply to your appliance. Sometimes there can become a build up of frost on the evaporator panel. If this has occurred on your evaporator panel, you will need to defrost it first. The preferred method is with a hairdryer. DO NOT use a heat gun. It will give off too much heat, and could warp and deform your plastic liner. Once you have defrosted it to the point that you can see the screws, you can stop defrosting. Now you should be able to remove the screws along with the evaporator panel.

After the evaporator panel is removed, you will need to defrost the evaporator as well so that you can locate the defrost thermostat.

Note: If you have a top or bottom mount freezer that contains your icemaker, it will need to be removed as well. After you have removed the evaporator panel, you also have to defrost the evaporator. You must do this so that you can locate your defrost heating element. It will be a black cylinder heater, or a glass cylinder that contains a coiled wire inside of it. The glass tube style of defrost heating element is VERY FRAGILE, and if broken is very dangerous.

Note: Do not totally defrost the evaporator coils. You need the defrost bi-metal switch to stay cold. It needs to be cold in order for you to test it. The defrost bi-metal switch contact is closed when it is cold, and open when it is warm. You will find the defrost bi-metal switch fastened to the top right, or left corner of the evaporator coil.

Now that you have located the defrost bi-metal switch, now you need to locate the wire ends or wire harness and unplug them. Set the Ohm/Voltage meter to Ohm. Attach one lead to each of the wire ends, to test the bi-metal switch. If the meter reads zero on a digital Voltage meter, or if the needle moves to the right on standard Voltage meter, then your bi-metal switch is good. (If the bi-metal is still cold) If the meter reads one on a digital voltage meter, or the needle does not move on a standard voltage meter, then the bi-metal switch is bad and it will need to be replaced.

Once you have completed testing the defrost bi-metal switch, put the evaporator panel back on and you also need to reinstall the icemaker(If applicable) You have completed the job!

One of the most confusing aspects of homebuilding can be the

rough opening for an overhead garage door. It is one of the

most frequent questions I am asked.

The rough opening for a garage door, simply put, is the

actual size of the door itself. For example, if the garage

door is a 7’0″ x 16’0″, then that is the size the rough

opening should be framed to. This is also what the opening

in the foundation should be. The studs and cripples will

then stop right at the edge of the foundation.

The foundation usually drops 8″ to allow the concrete floor

to be poured over the top of it. This has to be accounted

for when figuring the length of the cripples to get the

right height of the overhead door header. Normally the

floor is poured 3″ below the top of the foundation wall. If

the overhead door is 7′ then 4 and 1/2″ is subtracted from

that height. This is the 3″ drop and 1 1/2″ for the bottom

plate. Your total cripple length would be 6′ 7 1/2″.

Once the floor is poured, the door jambs can be installed.

The width of these jamb pieces vary with the size of the

wall and what the wall is finished with (brick, siding,

dryvit, etc). The header piece is installed first, then the

two side pieces. These go from the header to the finished

concrete floor. Once the jambs are in the door can be

installed. With the door installed the door stops are then

put on either with or without weatherstripping.

If you know the door size of your overhead door, you know

the rough opening. From there its determining where to start

and stop your framing.

5 Ways to Remove a Stuck Screw

A stuck screw can prove to be the ultimate nuisance, the proverbial “thorn in one’s side” as craftsmen strive to complete a project or repair. Stuck and stubborn screws are generally caused by rust and corrosion that accumulates and sticks around the screw’s body. To release the screw, you must break it loose from the corrosion that binds it. To achieve this breakaway, try these five sure-fire extraction methods and you should have that stuck screw un-stuck in no time.

1.) Chemical Removal: Chemical removal methods are the first, most gentle techniques to try. To dissolve the binding corrosion you can apply a number of easily accessible products: lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, and even Coke or Pepsi can loosen a stuck screw. Any anti-corrosive solution works better when left to soak into the screw-hole, because of this, even if the chemical doesn’t release the screw, it softens it up for the next removal step(s). If you tap the screw while applying rust remover, it may help the chemical to penetrate further into the screw-hole releasing more of the screw. Once you’ve let your solution set into the screw, attempt to loosen it once more. Remember not to use a solution that could stain or damage the material housing your frozen screw.

2.) By Force/Impact: Before beginning this process be certain you have the correct sized screwdriver. Lock your pliers or vice grips to the top of the screwdriver shaft, and while keeping downward pressure on the screwdriver, and using the vice grips as leverage, try turning the screw. This additional leverage/force may break it free. You may also try hitting the screwdriver with a hammer (while the screwdriver is inserted into the screw’s head). Remember to do this lightly so as to not destroy the tip of your screwdriver. If you can, also try hitting the screwdriver while turning it – this combination of impact and rotation should break the screw free from adhesion.

3.) Heat/Cold: Before using temperature extraction methods, be certain the material housing the screw can withstand temperature changes. That said, you can use a propane or butane torch to heat and consequently expand the screw. You can also use a soldering iron or even a hot glue gun (without glue) to heat up a frozen screw. The expansion should allow you joggle and reverse the screw free. If the material around the screw can not tolerate heat, cold temperatures, although less effective, may work for you. Keep ice on the screw’s head – if accessible, dry ice is most effective. When the screw is sufficiently cold try turning again. Note: If you choose to heat up your screw – don’t apply lubricating oils (as they are flammable) to the screw until it has entirely cooled. You may need to repeat heat and cold cycles several times to break the screw loose. Always be mindful when using temperature extraction methods – both can cause severe burns when not careful.

4.) Destruction: If you absolutely have to get the screw out, and it still has not budged, you can attempt to destroy the screw. These methods are generally reserved for last resorts and craftsmen must be mindful to keep the screw hole intact. If the screw hole becomes damaged it is much more difficult to replace that stuck, rusted, and stubborn screw. First: place a steel punch or small chisel slightly off-center in the screw’s head-slots. Repeatedly hit (with a hammer) the top of the punch or chisel counter-clockwise (remember, righty tighty – lefty loosy). Several impacts should effectively loosen the screw. You may also try drilling out the screw. When drilling out a screw, keep your drill bit dead-center. If you have access to left handed drill bits these put more turning pressure on the stuck screw as it turns. Eventually the screw should begin to turn and release.

5.) Drastic Measures: These are definitely last resorts, however, screws with a totally stripped or broken head may be impossible to remove without a “screw extractor.” A screw extractor is a marvelous little device (only about $5 – $10) with a square head and reverse tapered cutting screw threads on the other end. The square head is built to be fastened to a T Handle but also works with an adjustable wrench or vice grips. After a pilot hole has been pre-drilled into the stuck screw, the counter-clockwise threads are designed to screw backward into the screw’s body. The extractor digs into the damaged screw, begins to turn it, and ,at last, releases it from the grasps of corrosion. Be extremely cautious not to break-off the screw extractor inside your stuck screw. If this happens, you’re basically, well… stuck. If a screw extractor can’t get the job done, and you are now more hell-bent than ever to get that screw out, there is one last option. Spark erosion. Spark erosion, or electrical discharge machining is a technique that utilizes rapid repetitions of electrical discharge to disintegrate metals. This method effectively melts, or dissolves the screw while leaving the screw hole and surrounding materials unharmed and intact. Spark erosion machines are truly impressive, but are also pretty difficult to gain access to. In order to utilize spark erosion you must find a service that provides this type of machining. In the long run it may not be worth the hassle. Keep trying, show that screw who’s the boss, and persistence will prove the most effective method for success.

Removing stuck screws can be an immeasurable hassle, but one of these methods is bound to loosen that pesky screw. Good luck, and always be cautious!
