Re-Opening a Prior Social Security Disability Benefits Claim

There are a number of reasons why a claimant should hire a Social Security disability attorney to help with a disability benefits claim. The more common reasons include but are not limited to: no up front fees, free consultations, gathering medical records, dealing with Social Security, and arguing in front of an Administrative Law Judge. One of the rarely talked about, yet very important reasons for hiring a disability lawyer is their ability to “re-open” prior claims.

What does it mean to re-open a prior claim?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) routinely denies disability claims. In fact, at the initial application level it can seem as though SSA is only approving claimants that are on the verge of death. Since so many people are denied, many claimants are second, third, or fourth time applicants. If your claim was denied at the Disability Determination Services (DDS) level (where the initial determination is made) and was not appealed, a disability lawyer may be able to “re-open” your prior denial without having to start from square one. The advantages of this specific method are plentiful. Re-opening a prior claim can result in more benefits, speeding up the process, and less documents back and forth.

Re-opening prior Social Security disability claims is governed by 20 C.F.R. 404.988, which can be found on the government website. While there are a number of ways a disability attorney can re-open a prior claim, one of the more straight-forward options is to do so within 12 months of the date listed on the initial determination, for any reason. There should be an emphasis on for any reason.

The second way a prior claim can be re-opened is if it is within four years of the date of notice of the initial determination and if there is “good case”. Good cause is defined in 20 C.F.R. 404.989:

1) New and material evidence is furnished

2) A clerical error in the computation or recomputation of benefits was made; or

3) The evidence that was considered in making the determination or decision clearly shows on its face an error was made

Good cause for re-opening a case does not exist when the only reason is a change of legal interpretation or administrative ruling upon which the determination or decision was made.

There are many other ways that a case can get re-opened. If you have previously been denied disability benefits, you may have the option of re-opening the case rather then starting a new. It should also be noted that it is important to know whether you had originally applied for SSDI or SSI when you speak with a disability lawyer. Re-opening prior claims is one overlooked yet very important way a disability attorney can help you with your claim

Green Dental Office Design – Improving the Lighting

One of the biggest areas of concern in dental office design is making sure that there is proper lighting, especially in the operatories. Traditionally, fluorescent ceiling lighting has been used to provide general purpose lighting. One of the challenges, however, is to do so with color correcting lamps (bulbs) so that the lighting does not affect the color of the patient’s teeth and the best possible color matches can be obtained.

If the dental office was not built with a dental office designer involved that watched for this, often times low-cost general purpose fluorescent fixtures and standard lamps were installed and the dentist and hygienist have had to deal with the poor illumination and quality that they produce.

Today, as we move toward higher efficiency and green dental office design, there are better options. Moving to T5 lamp fluorescent fixtures can improve the energy by as much as 28%. For example, a 35W T5 lamp puts out 3650 lumens with an efficacy of 104 lumens per watt. This compares to a 40W T12 lamp at only 3,050 lumens and an efficacy of 81 lumens per watt, or a 32W T8 at only 2,700 lumens and an efficacy of 89 lumens per watt. (source: 1)

If your dental office design makes use of can lighting rather than tube, replacing the lamps with compact fluorescents (CFL) or LED’s is a great way to reduce your energy usage and “green” your office. LED’s generally score 92 on the Color Rendering Index as compared to 80 to 85 for other light sources, giving a “truer” white light. The sun is measured at 100 CRI. As far as efficacy goes LED’s can generate as many lumens at 15W as a fluorescent produces at 35W. That’s over a 50% reduction in energy usage.

Another green design advantage LED’s have over incandescent and fluorescent lighting is that they contain no hazardous chemicals. Most fluorescent and CFL’s contain mercury, lead, sodium, or other hazardous materials that can end up in land-fills and leach into the water supply.

Lastly, in addition to reduced energy usage LED’s last a long time. Since they don’t really burn out, their life is measured in lumen depreciation, and most LED’s can last 50,000 hours or more before their lumen output depreciates to 70% of its original output. This is the point at which the Illuminating Engineering Society says they should be replaced.

So, if you are planning a dental office remodel or a design for your new dental office, be sure to ask your dental office designer to make use of higher efficiency, greener lighting in the design. If your not currently doing a remodel but are looking for ways to green your office and reduce your energy usage, converting your lamps or fixture to T5 fluorescents or LED’s is a great place to start!

Know the Mechanism of Led Lighting

LED’s are largely used as signal lamps in many appliances and more and more people are increasing using LED lighting. LED means light emitting diode which belongs to semiconductor category. It originated in 1960 when it was used for producing low intensity lighting, but nowadays it is primarily used for ultraviolet lighting delivering powerful brightness and energy.

The mechanism or the functioning of LED lights is really simple to understand. Whenever you switch on the light emitting diode light series of electrons combine together with lots of electronic holes inside the appliance, thereby releasing energy. The resulting effect is called as electro-luminescence and it gives various colors depending on the semiconductor and its energy. Normally LED is very small and it occupies only 1mm of surface, however you can use many optical elements for designing its radiation. When compared with other traditional light sources LED lights are highly advantageous since it consumes very less energy. Though it is smaller in size, you cannot tell that it cannot work efficiently. It can work non-stop for long hours and is highly strong and robust in its efficiency.

Even a small light of LED can create brightness to the entire room. But it you compare the power of fluorescent lamps with LED you can understand its quality and efficiency. Light emitting diodes lamps are widely used in aviation industry and in automotive industry. Have you ever watched the brake lamps in your car and powerful turn indicators which emits flash of colored lights? They are nothing but LED lights. That apart you can also find these lights in traffic signals which are clearly visible even in misty weather conditions. Of late infrared LED lights find application in remote control devices which is used for operating television, DVD sets and recorders and many other domestic appliances.

The lights of LED are very small in size but big in capacity and functions. Owing to is efficiency and power saving nature many people use these lights in their home. Apart from domestic usage, it is also used in industries and organizations and any other business enterprise. You can also these lights as decorative lights and have brilliant effect in your garden. When it comes to party you can use several colors of LED lights to illuminate the event. In case you have not used LED lighting so far, it is time for you to switchover to these lights which are power saving and reliable for you. Since the light originates from solid object unlike other lights which come from gases these lights do not heat the surrounding even it burns for long duration.

Poor Listening Skills – A Major Barrier To Effective Communication

It is not possible to do the job or a routine work with out listening. Listening skills play an important role in overall communication process and are essentially important for sales personnel who directly communicate with customers. Not only the sales personnel but many people are poor listeners in their everyday life. Listening is often confused and interchangeably used with hearing. There is a major difference between listening and hearing.

Hearing is a physical act while listening is the act of hearing while also retaining and comprehending the information. Listening is active while hearing is passive. Though everyone knows the importance of listening skills when communicating to each other but very few pay attention to their listening skill and this often becomes a major barrier to effective communication. It is revealed by several studies that adults typically listen at only 25% efficiency level and experts agree that poor listening skills are the biggest contributors to poor communication. It is not just listening but skillful listening is what is needed in this competitive world. Skillful listening generally involves ability to evaluate ideas, recognize the difference between fact and opinion, use questioning and feedback to clarify communication, recognize loaded language, and recognize common listening barriers.

Listening may fall into any of the categories mentioned below:

Active listening: Active listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding. You listen closely to content and intent. You try to block out barriers to listening. Most importantly, you are non-judgmental and empathetic.

Inactive listening: The definition of this is the old adage, “In one ear and out the other.” Inactive listening is simply being present when someone is speaking, but not absorbing what is being said. You hear the words, but your mind is wandering and no communication is taking place.

Selective listening: Selective listening is hearing what you want to hear or what you expect to hear instead of what is being said. You hear some of the message and immediately begin to formulate your reply or second guess the speaker without waiting for the speaker to finish.

Reflective Listening: This is one of the most complex types of listening. It involves actively listening, interpreting what is being said and observing how it is being said. You work to clarify what the speaker is saying and make sure there is mutual understanding.

When one is involved in the communication process he may be engaged with any of the above listening skills or may some times combination of all.

Poor listening usually occur due to lack of control over the speed at which speakers speak, not being able to get things repeated, the listener’s limited vocabulary, failure to recognize the “signals”, problems of interpretation, inability to concentrate, and even may be due to some established learning habits.

A 10 Step Formula which will help to listen better.

1) Face the speaker and keep an eye contact

2) Keep an open mind

3) Listen to ideas/concepts and not just words

4) Don’t interrupt the speaker

5) Wait for pause for questions

6) Ask questions

7) Be attentive

8) Feel speaker’s feelings (empathize with speaker)

9) Give feedback

10) Pay attention to what is not said.

Although it is tough to be a good listener consistently the 10 step formula would always help one to improve their listening skills.

Exterior Doors – Wood, Fiberglass Or Steel?

There are many choices when it comes to exterior doors for your home. The three most popular door types are wood, fiberglass and steel. Factors such as where you live, the exact style or design you want and your budget will all affect your decision. If you are thinking about replacing your exterior front entry door then you should think about all the great benefits to a new front door such as adding curb appeal and value to your home. A new door will also give the exterior of your home a quick update for a relatively low price. In fact, you can purchase a really great quality steel door (which is one of the best door types on the market) for about $250.

Wood Doors

Wood doors have been around the longest of all doors and provide the most decorative and personalized options. These traditional doors have other beneficial characteristics such the ability to be painted or stained, a project you could probably handle on your own. Wood doors are made better and stronger today then they used to be. While wood doors do provide a sense of security (being that they are thick and heavy) they are not as secure as fiberglass or steel doors in that they have the potential to be kicked in. You can also choose from a variety of finishes for a wooden door and easily customize decorative glass for the door. If you live in a hot climate such as Las Vegas or Palm Springs then a wood door may not be best for your home because the wood can swell and end up costing you time and money from having to maintain and fix the door. If you want a warm and traditional feel to your home and top security isn’t a priority for you, then wood doors are an excellent option.

Fiberglass Doors

If you are looking for a strong, very secure and very energy efficient door then a fiberglass door is a great option for you. Fiberglass doors look and feel like wood but won’t crack, warp, scratch, peel, swell or expand like wood and are three times stronger than wood doors and in some cases can be easily painted or stained. These doors have a wood grain texture molded into them which gives the appearance of a real wood door when painted or stained. Fiberglass doors resemble wood doors so closely that it is hard to differentiate between which one is real wood and which one is fiberglass. These doors provide added security protection and greater insulating quality- while keeping to a traditional theme with less maintenance than wood doors.

Steel Doors

Steel doors are the most energy efficient of the doors discussed here but do not have as much decorative options as wood. Steel doors are the best option for those who live in areas that are subject to harsh weather such as hurricanes or tornados since they are so tough and strong and also hold up to all the elements (such as heavy rain and snow) well. Another great benefit to steel doors is that they don’t chip or crack or even warp. Another perk is that many steel doors come with a fireproof option. Keep in mind that steel doors can get dents but can also be easily repaired if needed. Being that steel doors are so strong and secure and the most cost efficient, they will probably continue to be one of the most popular door choices.

Whatever door you choose for your home, make sure that you weigh out the advantages and disadvantages of each door type to find the one that suits you best. If you are looking for other door types for your home, such as a garage door from any of the materials discussed above, then make sure you find a professional contractor to install it for you.

Goal Setting – How to Turn Your Desktop Wallpaper Into a Motivational Aid Using a Picture Collage

Although you may already have a number of goal setting strategies in place, I’d like to share another one with you that I recently incorporated into my day. The seed for this article was planted on Oct 29, 2008 while attending the Success Blueprint Workshop put on by Master Certified Coach Andrew Barber-Starkey of the ProCoach Success System. Andrew indicated that one of the best ways to build self confidence and to reach your goals is to always look for ways to “Impress Yourself”.

Impress Yourself Screen Saver

I find “Impress Yourself” to be one of the better motivational quotes I have heard and wanted to have it somewhere highly visible in my everyday life. I thought the best place to put this motto was on my computer monitor as a screen saver. With this creative idea I would be seeing the motivational quote “Impress Yourself” floating across my computer monitor many times over the day. My plan was that this visual aid would remind me of my previous goal setting activities, so I could refocus my efforts and move forward.

The Generation of an Idea

While I found the screen saver to be a powerful technique, this next idea I found to be even more so! I went to Bob Proctor’s weekend seminar “Create Your Own Economy” in May 2009. Both Bob Proctor and Gerry Robert were at this seminar. I find these two entrepreneurs to be great educators and feel inspired and motivated by what they have to say. Fortunately, I was able to obtain a picture of myself with each of these men at this conference. I planned to use these pictures as one of my desktop themes. I knew seeing these pictures on a daily basis would help me in the area of self improvement and motivation.

This presented me with a dilemma. Up to this point, I had been rotating the desktop wallpaper picture on my computer screen on a semi regular basis, generally using my children individually or together at different events or phases of their lives. As I did not think my children would appreciate being displaced from my monitor, I decided to create a simple photo collage of my children and educators.

A Simple Picture Collage

In my first attempt to produce my own free desktop wallpaper featuring my children and educators, I used Microsoft Word. I added the pictures to one page of a Word document and then added the motivational quote “Impress Yourself”. I copied and saved the file in Paint as a .jpg and used it as my computer wallpaper. This simple picture collage inspired me on a daily basis as I saw it every time I was working on the computer.

The Big Picture Collage Idea

Around the same time as I was working on my simple Word collage, my nine year old daughter was making a massive photo collage using PowerPoint. She was pasting numerous pictures onto the same slide and overlapping them. As I watched her create her masterpiece, my mind raced to create one of my own. It became immediately apparent that creating a picture collage in PowerPoint was much faster and easier than using Word. You can easily drag pictures around the slide, arrange their layout as you wish and overlap the pictures.

Building My First Large Photo Collage

For my first large picture collage, I added about 75 pictures to a standard PowerPoint slide, but I soon learned that unless your computer monitor is the same length and width as a standard piece of paper the photo collage will be skewed. I changed the size of my PowerPoint slide to match the exact size of my computer monitor screen, added more pictures, a couple of motivational quotes and saved this picture collage as one of my desktop backgrounds.

For a standard 19″ LCD computer monitor, which has a viewing area of around 180 square inches, I estimate you could be looking at between 75 to 150 pictures instead of just one. My largest picture is about nine square inches while my smallest is about one square inch. You may think that a small picture one square inch in size is too small but I find that this is all you need to prompt yourself. For example, I have a small 1 inch square picture of a multi family house on my picture collage. As soon as I look at this picture, I immediately see and visualize a house I would like to build for low income earners. The rooms are small but it is a home which people can afford and with ownership hopefully comes the building of self esteem. While you may not totally be able to pick out the details in the photo, the purpose of the picture is to trigger your mind to remember your goals. I find pictures of this size address this concept very well.

Personal Goal Setting

I find that there are two major advantages of including your goals in your computer desktop wallpaper. First, all of your past accomplishments and future goals are right in front of you on a daily basis. Seeing what you have already accomplished assures you that you are capable of creating more for yourself. Second, the time required to review your goals in picture format is quite quick. For instance, I have a dream book which contains what I want to accomplish in the future. However, as I am generally under time constraints, I rarely look at my dream book. Yet everyday I am reminded of my goals when I am working on my computer through my computer wallpaper photo collage. In essence, my computer desktop wallpaper has become my vision board as well as my dream book.

Personal growth educators generally want you to review your goals as much as possible. By using this photo collage technique, I have my whole dream book and vision board in front of me every day. I think this is a great goal setting tip and a good self improvement and motivation technique. This simple idea is not only easy to implement but fun to put together. Additionally, it very quickly reminds me of my goals on a daily basis. This gentle reminder tends to stop me from doing things which do not advance me and focus me on what needs to get done to achieve my personal goals.

My Results

One of my main goals is to become a better stock trader. Since viewing the phrase “Impress Yourself” and looking at my photo collage on a daily basis, I have tried very hard to always use extreme discipline when trading stocks. I find I can do this best by controlling risk, always having stops in place and by generally limiting the time I am in the stock market. For me, just a slight shift in mental attitude has improved my ability to trade stocks.

Your Challenge

What small shift in thinking do you need to dramatically change your life around? What goals are you searching for? Can you use this self improvement and motivation technique in your life?

Are you ready to start to build your first picture collage and use this simple idea to inspire you on a daily basis which hopefully will lead you to an improved life? When building your photo collage include the pictures that you think will best motivate you to succeed. You can also include inspiring, motivational quotes to further guide you.

In a picture collage, you can put a large picture on the bottom and then put a number of pictures on top of it. Simply send the large picture to the back. In this manner you can increase the number of pictures on the slide. If you are unsure about how to build a picture collage in PowerPoint or Word I have put the required information on my website.

I hope looking at this type of photo collage on a daily basis is as inspirational to you as it has been for me.

Metal Roofing Materials – Advantages And Disadvantages

Over the years, more and more home owners and home builders have become aware of the benefits of using metal roofing materials. This is proven by studies conducted by the National Roofing Contractors Association. Metal roofing usage has increased over the past ten years.

Because of this, more metal roofing materials are distributed in the market. These are very different from the tin barn roofs home owners and home builders have used in the past.

Due to the need for a stable home, high technology has provided the answers for the customers’ need to a fire-resistant, durable and lightweight roofing material that at the same time will look good when installed in their home.

Advantages of Metal Roofing Materials

There are many reasons why home owners opt for metal roofing.

Durability. Once metal roofing has been properly installed, it can last as long as the house can. It completely seals out water from entering. It can also survive high wind and can shed snow easily. Metal roofing resists fire, insects, rot and mildew. That’s why most metal roofing come with a strong warranty. That is because companies know that their products can last from 20 up to 50 years.

Light Weight. Metal roofing is lightweight when compared to other materials such as tile or concrete. Generally, metal roofing is from 50 up to 150 pounds for each square. In fact, some types of metal shingles can be applied over an existing roof without tearing it off, thus adding support for the structure.

Ease of Installation. Metal roofing is so easy to install that the next thing you know, you have already done it. Accomplished contractors do not have to waste too much time on the job because metal roofing can be installed fast. This is perfect for emergencies, such as when you need to install a strong roof quickly because a huge storm is on the way. The process of installing it only takes a day or two.

Fire Resistance. Metal roofing is given a class A rating because it is non-combustible. You should ask your contractor whether the roof you chose is classified under the group of metal roofing materials that will not ignite under intense heat.

Low Heat Absorption. It has been mentioned that metal roofing can reflect heat effectively. Because of this, it minimizes the heat that is absorbed during midday. Metal roofing also has a structural system that uses dead-air space found between the roof deck and the metal which increases the energy efficiency.

Disadvantages of Metal Roofing Materials

You should also be aware of the disadvantages in choosing metal roofing for you to to make the right choice.

Cost. Generally, metal roofing prices are similar to other materials that are sold for about $150 up to $600 for each square. The idea is that you get what you pay for, therefore you can invest on more expensive materials, as long as you know that you would be staying in your house for a long time to come.

Noise. Take for example the sound of the falling rain. For some people, this is romantic while for others, this can be annoying. Therefore, you have to remember that having metal roofing means that the noise is louder compared to other roofing materials. However, noise can be regulated by using roofing materials that contain structural barriers which minimize the drumming effect.

Factors to Consider When Buying Asian Walnut Hardwood Flooring

Asian walnut Wood, known in Asia as Acacia, has become increasingly popular in the recent years. Although it won’t be supplanting oak as the number one bestselling wooden flooring, it is steadily rising up the ranks alongside other exotic varieties such as Brazilian cherry. Before selecting your hardwood flooring, you should know a little more about this beautifully elegant variety of wood.

The Asian walnut tree does not grow as high as other hardwood trees. Consequently, its boards are slightly shorter than that of other hardwoods. The typical floor board is ¾ inch think and averages around four feet in length. On the other hand, this hardwood rates high on the Janka hardness scale, which measures the amount of force needed to embed a steel ball within the wood. The Asian walnut hardwood has a Janka rating of 2,300 pounds-force, which is a lot higher than that of the common oak, which rates at 1,300 pounds-force. Although this does not mean that flooring made of Asia walnut hardwood will be scratch-resistant, you can safely conclude that the flooring will definitely last.

Most hardwood floors are sold with some form of factory finish. These consist of protective coats of polyurethane, aluminum oxide, or a combination of both, that are applied to protect the wood from wear and tear. The latest available factory finishes have been formulated to make hardwood flooring more scratch-resistant. In case you purchased unfinished flooring, it will still need to undergo finishing once the floors are installed. However, the quality of the finishing will not be as good as if it were finished in a factory.

Asian walnut hardwood usually comes stained in three different colors. Natural pertains to wood that has only been given a clear, protective finish in order for the natural color to be appreciated. This can range from a light shade to the more common darker hues. Cinnamon-stained, otherwise known as cherry-stained, Asian walnut hardwood boards have a vibrant, reddish hue. On the other hand, smoke- or toffee-stained hardwood has a slightly darker hue similar to the natural color of the black walnut wood. Because of this, Asian walnut hardwood is often used as an alternative since it is relatively more affordable than its cousin.

Natural Variety in Color

Since the Asian walnut hardwood exhibits a naturally wide variety in color, it’s better to request for two sample boards so you can envision how the finished floors will look like. Some individuals expect a certain level of uniformity in their flooring, while others enjoy the distinctive color gradients that Asian walnut hardwood flooring usually exhibit. For a more comprehensive peek at how the finished product will appear, you can try buying a box of boards and go about arranging them on your floor. This way, you should be more or less sure on whether or not you will be using Asia walnut hardwood for your home. If you decided otherwise, you will have only spent a fraction of the actual cost of flooring for the entire project.

Natural Grain

Its unique loose, whirling grain pattern is another distinctive feature of Asia walnut hardwood. Depending on your preference, this can tempt you to use this type of hardwood for your flooring, or cause you to seek out other alternatives.

Once you have committed to installing Asian walnut hardwood floors and have selected the type of stains and finish you want, the next step involves selecting the supplier of your flooring boards. Basically, you can purchase hardwood flooring from local dealers, branches of a commercial chain of home improvement establishments, liquidators, and hardwood flooring wholesalers.

The cost of hardwood flooring is usually higher if you source them from home improvement establishments and local dealers. The latter has the advantage of possible price negotiations and typically offering free samples. Liquidators and flooring wholesalers both offer competitive prices. However, the latter’s supply of hardwood flooring cannot be guaranteed and no warranty is usually offered. Floorboard wholesalers offer hardwood flooring at more affordable rates and are more reliable stocked. Furthermore, most will ship free samples to prospective buyers. Make sure to compare suppliers to be able to get the best deal possible.

Rock Climbing Techniques – Avoiding a Flash Pump

It’s an old, familiar, rock climbing story. “I went to Millstone (a cliff in the UK’s Peak District) and headed straight for Bond Street (a classic HVS/5.8 climb). I was worried that, if I didn’t get on the climb right away, I’d wimp out.” “So how did it go?” I asked curiously. “A horror show,” my friend grinned ruefully. “For a start, I misjudged the size of the crack and tried to place the wrong pieces for protection. Before I knew it, I was horribly pumped.” He grimaced. “You can guess the rest. A minute later, I was sitting on the rope. I’d just blown the onsight. Game over.”

My friend had fallen prey to one of the rock climber’s greatest enemies – the dreaded flash pump. It doesn’t matter whether you’re cranking 5.7 or 5.14. A flash pump will close you down almost as fast as you can yell, “Take!”

What causes any pump in rock climbing? The simple answer is a build-up of lactic acid in your muscles to the point where they just don’t work properly any more. Imagine someone throwing pig slurry into your petrol tank. Step on the gas and… you grind to a halt. It’s demoralising, that’s for sure.

The term ‘flash pump’ refers to the first time in the climbing day when your muscles are engaging in strenuous activity. My friend wanted to get on his onsight project, Bond Street, before he got psyched out. Fair enough. But he also thought he was going on it fully rested, with maximum physical advantage. Big mistake.

How does one avoid the dreaded flash pump? It’s simple. You warm up before you climb and again before you climb anything hard. There are many, many ways of warming up (and I’ll discuss them in other articles) but virtually any warm-up which doesn’t strain muscles is better than none. Your warm-up should be general (e.g. running on the spot) and specific (climbing). I’m one of those climbers who needs a long (long!) time to warm up, so I’ve learned to do it slowly. It takes me three or four pitches to get into my strike. My best onsight is done after a short rest, but I may have stiffened up (old age!) so another warm-up might be in order. The best time for my onsight certainty won’t be the first pitch. It may be pitch five or six. But experiment – find out what works best for you – and stick with it.

A crucial point for avoiding a flash pump. In your climbing warm-up, it’s tempting to just stay with routes grades easier than your onsight challenge, on the basis that you don’t want to get tired. Don’t do this. It’s better for your third or fourth route/pitch to be near the onsight level. You need to ‘wake up’ your muscles and ‘fine tune’ them for the coming challenge. It’s as though they develop a ‘memory’ for just the right effort, the right approach.

Everybody – even the world’s best climbers – can succumb to a normal pump. But none of us should fall victim to a flash pump. It’s eminently avoidable, once you know how. And now you know how. So warm up – sensibly and thoroughly.

Lean Thinking and the Eight Sources of Waste

The phrase “waste not, want not” is incredibly accurate when applied to organisations. Even in the best run companies, waste is everywhere.

Some Lean practitioners use the analogy of putting on their waste goggles, when they do this, they say they see waste everywhere!

  • Use of more raw materials than needed
  • Rework-making mistakes
  • Using more space than you should
  • Excess inventory
  • Taking too long to develop and produce your services
  • Using more equipment than necessary
  • Using too many people.

Muda is the Japanese name for waste and waste is all around you, in the company you work in, in your own company and in your everyday life.

You waste your time in the queue at the post office or bank, you waste your time in traffic, you waste your time and energy looking for things in your office, throwing things out of your cupboard and fridge because they are past their sell by date is waste!

Lean talks of eight types of waste

1. Transport-Movement of product or materials between transformational operations. More movement= more waste. Poor layouts, whether its a factory floor, office or desk.

2. Waiting-Any time that an employee (or you) is idle is waste. Poor paperwork, lack of instruction, poor workloads etc.

3. Overproduction-Producing more than the customer wants.-inventory costs, transport, manpower, raw materials costs etc etc.

4. Defects- Anything that fails to meet specification. Any process that fails to transform/alter the product/service in some way is considered non-value added. However, some non value adding processes are sometimes a requirement.

5. Inventory- Inventory is non-value added. It may be needed but is waste nonetheless. It consumes finances, space etc and is at risk of becoming damaged or obsolete. Food for instance could spoil, some products could become obsolete. It can also cover up other inefficiencies such as inefficient processes and bad work practices.

6. Motion-Any movement of a person that does not add value is waste. Walking is the obvious one but it also includes bending, lifting, twisting, reaching etc.

7. Over processing (sometimes called extra processing) This is talking about any process that does not add value to the product. So things like, protective packaging between processes or say fettling after galvanising.

8. Unexploited knowledge/intelligence-Not using the knowledge/ability of people within the business.

Identifying All Important Forklift Parts

Forklift trucks are not just known for lifting materials but also for being a flexible machine that has different functions depending on the attachment you connect to it. There are various attachments available there that you can use as an alternative function of a forklift, such as rotator, sideshifter, pole attachment and many more. However, the forklift parts would consist of truck frame, cab, overhead guard, power source, mast, load back rest, counter weight, and tilt cylinders. These are the forklift parts that are responsible in making it a useful device.

Each of the forklift component has its identified function. The truck frame is the most visible part since it is the base of all the other forklift buddy parts. It is where the axles, counterweight, mast, and the power source are connected. Some truck frame of forklift already has its tanks as part of the frame but there other model of forklift that as a separate part for the fluid tank. The counterweight serves as a counterbalance of the machine. It is a cast iron that has a very heavy weight attached at the rear part of the forklift truck. The part that has the pedals, levers, switches, steering wheel, and the dashboard, which contains the operator red outs, is called the cab.

The power source is where the internal combustion is located, which can be powered using an LPG gas, gasoline, or the CNG gas. The part that protects the driver from falling objects is the overhead guard. The hydraulic cylinder that is connected in the truck frame is called the tilt cylinders. The mast is responsible in raising or lowering the equipments that needs to be transferred. The part where the fork is connected is known as the carriage and the part that prevents the equipment from moving backward is the load back rest. These are the different forklift parts with its function.

Forklift parts can also be replaced in case it has been damaged or does not function well.

The Best RV Covers Are Made of Ripstop Fabric

The sporting goods community has a new term when it refers to the material used to make heavy duty tear resistant equipment. That term is ripstop and it refers to 100% woven fabric that is lightweight and has a nylon-threaded interlocking design that resists tearing and ripping. Ripstop fabrics are made by weaving and interlocking the nylon in a cross-hatch pattern with the base fabric. Various types of fabric can be used as the base fabric: cotton, polypropylene, silk and polyester. The nylon is then crosshatched with the base fabric making a fabric that is ideal for resisting tears and fraying. The fabric is only labeled as ripstop if nylon is crosshatched and interlocking with another base fabric.

Ripstop fabrics are very easy to identify because of the interlocking hatching of nylon threads throughout the material. In many cases the material has the feel of a barely raised box or diamond pattern. It is so versatile that ripstop fabrics have been used to make fire safety uniforms as well as camouflaged uniforms & equipment for the military. One of the best attributes of this material is that it is thin, lightweight, and even breathable- ideal for sports attire like jerseys and running shorts.

Ripstop fabric is being used when the design calls for a fabric used in the sporting goods area. Any recreational use of a heavy duty tough fabric that requires the material to stand up to rough conditions like heavy use as well as torrential winds and rain and yet the material still remains in tact under those stressful applications would benefit from a ripstop fabric. Since it is a water repellent fabric it is usually used when making camping equipment, tents, sails, parasails, parachutes, hang gliders, hot air balloons, kites, banners, sports clothing and now RV covers.

This ripstop fabric could not come at a better time for the RV cover industry. Because RV covers are used to protect large surface areas they are prone to tear. The covers are in contact with the RV’s ladders, awning, AC units, TV antennas, bumpers, etc. that could snag the cover during installation. Then while in storage they are exposed to the forces of nature like winter winds and increased water weight due to snow and rain. Little wonder that tearing is an issue. With a ripstop fabric, RV covers will last longer and will not need to be replaced as often as they are now.

As a dropshipper, I have found that many of the discount RV covers that are sold today cannot withstand the strong winds that come during the winter when most of us have our recreational vehicles covered and stored. Up until this point the best cover I have been able to sell and recommend was the Goldline cover from Eevelle. The Goldline cover is made of a strong supple water resistant Tru-Weave fabric with a Durapel finish that outlasts any cover on the market up to this point.

In June 2012, Classic Accessories came out with a new line of RV covers called PermaPRO. This line of covers is made of a ripstop fabric that promises to rival the Goldline cover. The PermaPRO fabric is one ply 100% woven polyester with the nylon hatching that makes it a true ripstop fabric. The PermaPRO RV covers are made of an extra strength ripstop fabric that repels water, protects against bird droppings, dirt, dust & scratches, provides UV block protection from sun damage, as well as being the best winter snow storage cover that will not tear or rip in the blustery winter winds or the increased water weight of melting snow. Small tears will not turn into large rips when exposed to the elements with the ripstop fabric on the PermaPRO line of RV covers and the fabric will be able to support the weight of melting snow and ice.

Check out the new line of RV covers sold by Classic Accessories at and see why ripstop is the new wave of the future for RV covers.
