I often hear from wives who ask me how husbands really feel about their mistresses. I often hear things like: “It’s bad enough that he cheated on me and had a physical relationship with someone else. But, the emotional cheating is the hardest to take. Because I don’t think I could bear it if he was in love with her.”

Or, “my husband claims that he loves his mistress. I don’t think this is even possible. They haven’t known each other for very long and she’s not the type of woman he would even typically find attractive. What in the world has gotten into him? He’s usually a smart man, but he’s acting so stupid.”

As I’m sure you already suspect, a husband’s feelings about a mistress can be a facade. There are many reasons why he may think that he’s in love with her. I’ll go over some of these reasons in the following article. And I’ll tell you why I typically don’t buy most of them.

Often, The Husband Wants To Love His Mistress So That His Actions Are Justified: Let’s face it. Cheating on your spouse is not the behavior that many people are most proud of. It’s deceptive. It’s immature. And, it indicates that you’d rather go behind someone’s back to solve a problem rather than handling it like an adult. So, often husbands will try to convince themselves that the action they took was based on strong, undeniable, and irresistible feelings that come along once in a lifetime.

So a husband will often say to himself “I didn’t plan to cheat. But she’s my soul mate. How am I supposed to turn my back on that?” Because he is looking for a way to justify his actions, he’ll often magnify how he feels about her. Imagine cheating on your spouse just because you think you might “like” someone. This doesn’t make as much sense, right? So he has to exaggerate his feelings both to himself, the mistress, and to you until his actions begin to feel justified or appear to make some sense.

A Man May Think He Loves His Mistress, But What He Really Loves Is The Way That She Makes Him Feel About Himself: A husband may look you right in the eye and tell you that the mistress “understands.” “gets,” or “appreciates” him in a way that you don’t. Of course he would like to believe this. Because often, she’s telling him that he’s wonderful, exciting, and does no wrong. Who wouldn’t respond to that?

She doesn’t see the man who trims his nose hairs in the sink or who leaves his underwear on the bathroom floor. It’s easy for her to be “into” him because she’s not seeing the real him. In time, this changes. But in the beginning, her attention and feedback likely makes him feel valued, exciting and unique. It’s not her that he loves. What he loves is how confident and alive being with her makes him feel.

The problem is that none of this is based on any form of reality. Eventually, she too will see his flaws and eventually she too will turn her attention back to real life. But in the meantime, he may tell you that he’s “in love” with her, but know that what he truly adores is how she makes him feel.

So where does that leave you? Well, knowledge can be power. Eventually, she’ll have to pick up those dirty socks or deal with his other issues and all that excitement and energy is going to start to fade. And when it does, the feelings are going to follow right along. And suddenly, along with his disappointment, you’ll also see those loving feelings begin to reveal themselves as what they really are. An affair usually comes out of some personal crisis or self esteem issue. He usually does nothing (other than have an affair) to address this. These issues are going to eventually affect the affair in the same way they affected the marriage.

It’s Highly Unlikely To Find A Soul mate Within A Sea Of Deception: When men claim that the mistress is their “soul mate,” you have to ask yourself about their logic. A relationship based on lies, deception, and imagination is usually destined to fail. How are they ever going to have a relationship based on trust, mutual respect, and admiration when you consider how their relationship began?

A loving and healthy relationship is based on history, honesty, transparency, and hanging in there for a long haul. The mistress doesn’t have any of these things on her side. Sure, in the beginning, everything may seem shiny and exciting but it can not and typically does not last. As these two return to reality, what’s real about that relationship will usually reveal itself. And when it does, so too do the feelings behind it.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that count. Depending on the type, a headphone jack costs anywhere from a fraction of a dollar to a few dollars. Technicians have stated that it is a shame that such beautifully designed devices fail because of a jack malfunction.

So, what can be done to avoid and/or repair a problem with headphone jacks? If you think dirt or dust got into the jack, you could try blowing out the jack hole. You can blow into the hole yourself or buy a can of compressed air commonly sold in electronic and computer stores that are made specifically for cleaning electronic devices. If you think liquid or moisture got into the hole, just let it sit for a while in a dry warm place for a couple of days, the device might dry out and begin working properly. If none of these works and your device is under warranty, send it back to the manufacturer for repair.

Although not recommended, you could try a do it yourself fix. To do this, remove the cover of your device. This may require you to remove a number of screws around the perimeter of the cover. If you have soldering skills you can remove the old solder from the jack by heating up the old solder with a soldering gun and tabbing it off with a toothpick. Then apply new solder using proper soldering technique. If you do not know how to solder try cleaning jack connectors with an alcohol swab. Test your device to see if it works. If not, you may want to re-solder the connections. Soldering properly requires some skill.

If all of the above methods do not resolve your jack problem, your best bet may be to send it back to the manufacturer for a repair. Follow the instructions in your user manual for the repair process. But there are ways to avoid problems with your headphone jacks. Be gentle when inserting the male jack into the female receptor. Angling when injecting may cause the female connectors to spread, thus causing a loose connection, which may require constant jiggling. Use device clips to secure your device to your belt or pocket to avoid pulling on the jack if your device falls or is pulled.

Sometimes the best way to avoid jack damage is prevention. Some devices come with jack covers but others do not. Protect your investment, avoid dust and moisture and get a cover if you don’t have one.

This makes it an excellent joining process for most industrial construction needs. SMAW is also the most basic form of welding that is taught in the majority of schools as foundation to learning other types of metal joining processes.

TIG welding, or TIG, is an abbreviation for “Tungsten Inert Gas” but its proper name is “Gas Tungsten Arc Welding” commonly abbreviated and referred to as “GTAW”. Back in the day, it used to also be known as “HeliArc”. GTAW is a joining technology that uses a constant current power supply just like Stick welding. What changes is the way filler metal is deposited into the joint. TIG uses a torch that has a piece of tungsten to produce an arc. The torch also has shielding gas flowing through it to protect the weld area from air. Characteristics of tungsten allow arc temperatures to reach more than 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The way TIG works is that the arc is created and then a filler metal is added to the joint. Filler metals for this process come in wire form and are simply cut to length. The most commonly used shielding gas is Argon, which is used for welding more than 90 percent of metals. TIG welding is used for welding exotic metals or anywhere that requires high quality welds. This process is one of the most difficult types of welding to learn.

MIG welding, or MIG, is an abbreviation for “Metal Inert Gas” which is more formally known as “Gas Metal Arc Welding” or “GMAW”. The term MIG comes from the original shielding gasses used that were the inert, or Nobel, gasses. Today the gases used vary, so the name has officially been changed to “Gas Metal Arc Welding”. MIG welding is the slang term that is commonly accepted. It is also known as “Wire Wheel Welding”. This process uses a wire feed to feed solid filler wire to the weld joint. The wire feed is connected to a constant voltage power supply that creates the arc to melt the wire when it hits the weld joint. Before the wire creates an arc there needs to be a shielding gas feed through the system. MIG welding is done through a MIG gun that combines the wire, electricity and shielding gasses all at the same time. The MIG gun has a trigger that, once squeezed, starts the metal joining process. This process is considered semi-automatic because the filler metal is continuously feed to the weld joint. This metal joining process is typically used in factories where high production is needed. MIG is easy to operate but setting up the equipment can be troublesome for a less experienced operator.

FCAW, or “Flux Cored Arc Welding”, is technically considered a different type of welding process. The truth is that FCAW is a different type of electrode or filler wire used in a MIG welding machine. The electrode is a hollow tube that has flux in the center. What this does is allow the electrode to weld without using an external shielding gas. There are two types of electrodes used in FCAW; self shielding and dual shielding. Self is an electrode that does not need any shielding gas. It is very much like a Stick welding electrode turned inside out. What this does is allow welding in windy conditions. The down side of MIG welding is that wind or drafts cause welding defects. A self shielding FCAW electrode solves that problem. Dual shielding electrodes need shielding gas to work properly. The benefit of this type of electrode is the amount of weld it can deposit. FCAW is typically used in shipyards or anywhere that needs lots of welding to be done on thick metals.

Comparing the Watts Premier Recirculating Pump to the Metlund D’Mand System

The Watts Premier Hot Water Recirculating System

According to Watts, the Premier Recirculating system gives you hot water instantly at every faucet. Here’s the quote from their website: “Watts Premiers Hot Water Recirculation Pump brings convenience and saving to your home, giving you hot water instantly at every faucet, when you need it.”

Technically that’s not really true…

A luke-warm water circulating system

The Watts Premier system is what I like to call a luke-warm water circulating system. The system consists of a valve for placement under the sink, and a pump located at the water heater. The pump creates a pressure difference between the hot faucet and the cold faucet.

The valve connects between the hot and cold faucets, and when the temperature drops to below 98° water flows through the valve bringing the heated water towards the sink/faucet/valve installation.

When the valve senses a temperature above 98° the valve closes and the flow stops. In other words it operates identically to a traditional temperature controlled circulating system, except instead of hot it circulates warm water, and of course, uses the cold water line as the return line.

Wasting energy

The water may not be hot, but it is much warmer than with no premier system, consequently your water heater will have to consume more energy to keep the water in that big heat exchanger you call your plumbing system warm.

One nice thing about the Watts pump is that you can place a valve under every sink if you wish, and get instantly warm water to any or every fixture. However, you will at the same time increase the energy consumption of your system.

Won’t work with tankless water heaters

The pump is very small and does not consume much energy, however as a result it can’t pump much water either. It’s unlikely that the Watts Premier will be able to turn on even a small tankless water heater. According to the pump curves on the Watts website the pump cut-off pressure is about 1.5 psi.

Watts uses a Grundfos UP15-10SU7/TLC pump with a 1/25 horsepower motor which consumes 25 watts. The pump runs continuously, so running it for say 16 hours a day would consume 25 watts/hour x 16 hours/day x 365 days/yr = 146,000 Watt/hours per year in electrical energy consumption. That’s 146 kWh and at say 13 cents per kWh would be $19.00 per year. This would be substantially less than the energy lost due to circulating warm water.

The hot water will of course arrive more quickly than if the pipes were allowed to cool down completely because being colder, they would suck more heat out of the oncoming cold water as it flowed to the faucet. But it certainly can not be called “Instant”.

The Metlund D’mand Pump

The Metlund D’mand system is a demand type hot water delivery system. It only pumps the water to the fixture when you “demand it” by pressing a button. The D’mand pump mounts under the sink, and connects to the hot and cold water supply valves like the Watts valve. A power outlet is needed to plug the pump into.

When the button is pressed the pump begins pumping the water to the fixture returning the cooled off water in the hot water pipes back to the water heater through the cold water pipes. When the pump detects sudden increase in temperature it shuts off so hot water does not get into the cold water line.

No wasted energy

Since all the pump does is fill the pipes between the fixture and the water heater with hot water just as you would do by running the faucet, you don’t use any additional energy from the water heater with the system. Since the pump runs for a very brief time, it uses far less electricity than the Watts pump, about $1.00 per year.

Works with any tankless water heater

Some models will work with tankless water heaters. Since tankless water heaters typically take 10 to 20 seconds longer to get water to the fixtures, the Metlund pump is a very nice accessory for any tankless water heater, gas or electric. You get your hot water very quickly with no additional energy penalty and you save a lot of water.

The Metlund pump models range in price from about $350 to about $750 retail price.

Lean Six Sigma in Field Service Organizations – Identifying and Eliminating Waste

You have no doubt read various examples where Lean Six Sigma was used to identify and eliminate waste in both manufacturing facilities and service companies (i.e. financial institutions and hospitals). Most of us can quickly see how concepts such as inventory reduction and improved product quality are applied to physical objects or documents. But what about Field Service Organizations where the primary product (a completed service request) is often vaguely defined and the main component (technical expertise) is intangible? How can we apply the same techniques to obtain the same results (increased speed, reduced costs, and improved quality)?

In this article we will focus on just one element of Lean Six Sigma: Waste Reduction. While service managers may intuitively suspect that there are many areas of waste within their organization, they may not realize that the same tools used to streamline production assembly lines can be used to improve field service processes.

Let’s begin by comparing the fundamental activities performed in both a manufacturing facility and a service field organization:

System Inputs

  • Manufacturing: Product sales order is entered directly into the MRP
  • Field Service: Phone call or e-mail manually entered into SMS


  • Manufacturing: MRP checks parts stock lead times, current inventory, etc. before sending detailed demand to plant floor.
  • Field Service: Typically SMS only checks technician availability before dispatching (with limited detail).

Process Activities

  • Manufacturing: On plant floor – fabricating; assembling; testing.
  • Field Service: At customer site – replacing parts; troubleshooting; adjusting.


  • Manufacturing: Final QC inspection; Ship; Invoice.
  • Field Service: Customer Sign-off; Forward info; Invoice.

Although the specific tasks are different (along with the terminology), you can see that there are many parallels within the two processes. And, being similar processes they often are subject to similar sources of waste. Below we examine the most common areas of waste that are normally targeted by Lean Six Sigma projects.


Processing waste is often the results of over processing in both manufacturing and service. In manufacturing this refers to making products at higher (and more costly) specifications than required by the customer.

In a field service organization you can over-service a customer by exceeding the contractual Service Level Agreement (SLA). For example, you may provide an average one-hour on-site response when the SLA only specifies an average 4-hour response. While it is usually better to over-perform than under-perform on SLAs, it still represents waste as you are not matching the customer demand requirements – which can lead to higher costs or missed revenue opportunities.

TIP: Measure your actual response times separately for each service area and compare to the local competition. In some areas you may have a competitive advantage (e.g. lower than industry standard response times) that can be leveraged by your marketing team.


On a manufacturing floor, products are transported from station to station throughout the process. When these are mapped and measured carefully, you will often find the product moves great distances throughout the facility, and represent potential opportunities to reduce waste.

Transportation waste in a field service organization takes the form of miscommunication. Service request information is transported (communicated) from the customer to the call center, from the call center to the field technician, and (often in paper form) from the technician back to a central billing location. If you have a separate dispatching or triage help desk, there are even more handoffs. Each handoff represents an opportunity to introduce delays, errors, and non-value-add activities.

TIP: Create a pipeline report that shows the number and average age of service requests in each stage of the process (Opened – Not Dispatched; Dispatched – Not Started; Started – Not Completed; Completed – Not Invoiced; Invoiced). This will help you to identify bottlenecks that are caused by transportation delays within the process.


There are several Lean Six Sigma tools that focus on creating effective work areas by, among other things, reducing the unnecessary and awkward movements an operator may experience while performing their activities.

Perhaps ironically, motion waste in a field service organization is often the result of an attempt to improve quality. For example, if a Dispatcher needs additional clarification of a SLA requirement, they may physically walk over to the Contracts area to retrieve a paper file. Likewise – especially during an end-of-month billing frenzy – the Invoicing team may run to the Finance area to find a “live” person to check credit status.

TIP: How often do you observe call center personnel walking around the office while speaking to customers over their wireless headphones? Consider physically rearranging the work areas and/or creating electronic data marts where customer account information will be easily accessed by everyone in the office.


Spare parts inventories in either central warehouses or technician vehicles are often subject to management review and scrutiny. In fact, this may be the one area where you have already applied Just-In-Time or other Lean Six Sigma techniques.

However, inventory can also be thought of in terms of unutilized field service hours. These hours are typically non-productive and non-billable. Since Field Labor cost (excluding overtime) is essentially fixed, even minor productivity gains will have a significant impact on your bottom line.

TIP: Revenue-by-tech is an often-used and sometimes misleading measurement. Technicians can boost this metric by replacing more parts or increasing repair times. While your company may benefit from short term revenue, customer satisfaction and overall profitability will suffer. Technician productivity (hours billable / hours available) is a key metric for any field service organization and should be measured continuously and reported daily.


Just like a worker on the production floor or a teller at the bank window, field technicians are generally paid even during idle times. But beyond this obvious cost concern, delays within a field service process are typically passed directly and immediately to the customer – leading to increased frustration and lower satisfaction.

There are multiple opportunities for waiting in a field service process including: Dispatching (technician waiting on service requests), Parts Shipping (technician waiting for parts to arrive at site), Invoicing (billing personnel waiting for completed paperwork from field technician), and Contract Administration (waiting for site audit information or pricing to enable contract set-up in SMS).

TIP: When measuring Time-To-Dispatch, make sure you measure from the service request Open time to the technician Accepted time (not when the call center first relayed the request to the field). This ensures you are measuring delays that impact the customer, not just when calls are “thrown over the wall” to the field.


Most manufacturing facility closely monitors product defects throughout the production process. The goal is to identify and correct defects before they are passed forward to downstream operations.

You are probably aware of (and currently measure) two of the most common and visible product defects in service organizations: Call Backs and Re-bills. But note that these are end-point defects, that is, they are often the results of other errors passed throughout the process. For example, the Call Center may mistakenly identify the wrong piece of equipment when the service request is entered into the Service Management System. This defect could lead to assigning/dispatching errors and/or the technician arriving to the site without the proper replacement parts. If the technician then returns the completed paperwork without correcting the product information, the Invoicing team may apply the incorrect pricing and payment terms. The same defect is passed through multiple operations causing multiple errors.

TIP: As a general rule, you should divide Call Backs into a least two categories: with and without parts. If parts were used, you may need to review stocking practices and policies. If no parts were used, it may indicate a technician training issue (insufficient troubleshooting or other repair skills).


Producing too much product is easily visible as excess inventory in a factory setting. But how does overproduction affect field service? Remember, your finished product is a completed service call. While it may seem counterintuitive that you could have too many completed service calls, you must consider this in terms of scheduling. For example, a technician may have four Preventive Maintenance (PM) visits scheduled over the next two days (two PM visits each day). If the technician completes all four PM visits on the first day you may feel you have gained some advantage. But what if these PM visits are performed at the expense of other non-PM service requests? What about the schedules of the other technicians in the same service area? Were their PM schedules affected as they covered the non-PM workload of the first technician? Did the service office as a whole experience more overtime expenses as the team scrambled to meet customers commitments?

Smoothing out field service production is as important as a manufacturing floor. Not only does it make you a more efficient organization, it also reduces the stress on the Dispatch Team, Field Management, and (most importantly) the customers by reducing the need to constantly adjust and communicate ETAs.

Tip: Segment the each field technician’s labor hours by Time-of-Day, Day of Week, and Service Type (PM, non-PM, Install, etc.). Then compare this information among technicians working in the same service area. If the hours-distribution varies significantly among technicians it could indicate a scheduling or performance issue.

The items noted above represent just a few examples where waste could be found throughout the field service process. There are many, many more – each which could have a significant impact on your service business. Also, you may have noticed in the comparison above that manufactured products are typically subjected to various quality checkpoints throughout the production process. This helps ensure defects are not passed to the next work station (an important Lean Six Sigma objective) or, even worse, to the customer. However, field service events have no final inspection – except by the customers themselves. This factor alone should encourage you to consider using Lean Six Sigma to proactively identify waste and other process issues.

I know this can be hard when you have salt water running up your nose, I recommend you open and breath though your mouth to help you relax more also if you keep you chin tucked in the water should not run down the back of your throat, When that nostril is done tilt your head the other way and repeat the process again.

The next part is very important and it basically just involves emptying the water out of your nose, To do this you need to bend forward a little and turn you head from left to right also another good method is too breathe out your nose as fast as possible. Try not to hold either one of your nostrils closed or you could end up getting the water in a place where it will not dry very fast. You can also hold a tissue on the outside of your nose during this process to help dry out your nose.
