Work Platform Or Mezzanine?

Facility Managers are contacting material handling dealers and purchasing mezzanines for projects when in fact they should be purchasing work platforms. What is the difference you may ask?

Mezzanines are elevated steel structures typically built between two main stories of a building. They are primarily used for storage of goods and have personnel walking on top of them frequently to access the product. They support pallet racking, industrial shelving, cantilever racks, and generally any type of racking system in addition to general floor storage. They may also act as a second floor office if modular offices are installed on them. Typically, they have a pound per square foot requirement of 125 PSF. As such, mezzanines have certain codes designed just for them.

Work platforms are typically built to hold equipment in a manufacturing environment. This equipment is typically above the ground level. Some examples of these are broaching machine platforms, conveyor platforms, etc. Typically a person would access this platform for repair or cleaning purposes only. They are not accessed on a daily basis and their main purpose is to support equipment above ground level.

While mezzanines have specific minimum height clearances and stair width/length regulations, work platforms have clear exemptions from most of these. For example, a mezzanine requires 7 feet 6 inches clear underneath if people are working under it, and the same above it for people walking on it. Also, when installing any type of plastic shelving, gondola shelving or steel shelving, most fire marshals require a 12 inch chase between every 48 inch deep shelving unit.

In the case of a platform being used to support equipment, vessels, etc., the clear height above the equipment may be such that it clears the equipment and has sufficient clearance to accommodate repair or maintenance activities. There is no minimum requirement. The same applies to the clear height above the platform as long as the equipment has sufficient clearance to accommodate repair or maintenance activities. Platforms need not be 125 PSF if a lesser amount will suffice. (Less PSF, less steel, less cost).

One stairway is needed for platforms unless the common path of egress exceeds 75 feet, then a second one is needed. However, you can use spiral stairway, alternating tread stairways or an industrial ladder to achieve egress. Also, stairways for platforms need not be designed for handicap accessibility. When designing and building mezzanines for general storage, International Building Code (IBC) 2006 requires continuous handrails, extended handrails and a 3-rail handrail/kickplate system. Thus, typically it is less expensive to purchase a work platform than a mezzanine of the same size.

There are other smaller differences, but the bottom line is this: define the use of the space you plan on adding to your building, then work with a mezzanine professional to determine the right type of mezzanine or work platform. This would include the weight capacities, footings required (if needed), stairways, work surfaces, access gates and railings.

Starting a Home improvement project no matter the size of it is very exciting but can also be overwhelming, especially if you don’t get professional assistance in this process and try to do everything yourself.

The first thing you need to do to start the permit process, before hiring any Builder, Architect or Designer is visit your local Planning – Building department and briefly discuss the plans you have in mind to see if your idea/s are in compliance with the Community development plans and Ordinances. This visit is not mandatory but highly recommended.

Here are some points that you might want to find out with the Permit technician before you start your building permit process:

  • What are the setbacks requirements (clearance to each side of the property line)?
  • What is the maximum building height?
  • Will you need to provide extra parking spaces?
  • What would be approximately the plan checking and Building permit fees?
  • Also, is very important to know if your property is located in any specific plan area. For instance let’s say your property is located in a historic district, changing completely the facade of your house will not be allowed.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing this step yourself most Architects or designers do this research for a minimal fee or even as a complimentary service included in their contract. Once you know what you are allowed to build, the next step in the building permit process is to obtain a set of construction plans preferably prepared by a local Architect or Designer.

Then you will be ready to apply for your building permit or formally submit these set of plans to your Building department for review, this step will take a few days or weeks depending upon the size, type of construction and load of work pending at the local office.

While waiting for your building permit to be issued, (which is the last step in your building permit process) you can start getting bids from local builders.

Reinforce a Stained Glass Window – Instructions For the Stained Glass Craftsperson

How to reinforce a stained glass window is something that anyone working with stained glass needs to learn. To prevent bowing and sagging over the years, windows that exceed 4 square feet in total dimension need to have as much stability as possible. When a window is less than 4 square feet, the need to stabilize will depend on the design and where the window is going to be installed.

The constant opening and closing of a door will make a stained glass window bow if it isn’t properly stabilized. Therefore, any window, no matter what size, that is going in a door, including cupboards, needs to be reinforced. The same goes for a window that is installed as an exterior window and is exposed to the outside elements, especially wind, or near a door that is opened and closed frequently.

To determine the square footage of a pattern or window, multiply the width times the height, in inches, then divide by 144. To convert metric to square feet, multiply width by height in centimeters, then divide by 930.25.

When I say “depends on the design”, I’m talking about straight lines that make hinge joints. A hinge joint is a straight or fairly straight line that allows the window to fold in half. You will often find those straight lines in geometric designs, but they can appear in any design. If the lines doesn’t go all the way across the window, it might go far enough that it could not only fold, but break any glass that gets in it’s way. The folding can occur at any time the window isn’t laying flat on the work surface. It’s not fun seeing your just finished window fold in half, pulling the glass out of the lead or foil and perhaps breaking some glass in the process.

So what can you use to reinforce stained glass windows? It’s called copper restrip and it works with both copper foil and lead. Copper restrip is made by several manufacturers. Cascade Metals and Venture are the 2 that I’m aware of. I have always used Cascade Metal’s restrip, only because it is what is available where I buy my supplies. I have been using it for 20%2B years.

Restrip will bend and follow curves easily as you are using it, but it does not bend on edge. In other words, hold a piece in your hands with the edge facing up and try to bend it by moving both hands inwards (almost the same motion you use when you’re breaking out glass by hand). It won’t budge. If you hold it with the flat surface facing up, you can bend it with ease.

When using restrip to for reinforcement, it is important to remember that it must run from one edge of the window to the other. That is the only way it will do any good. It can go either horizontal or vertical, or both if it’s needed. When it goes both ways, one of the pieces of restrip will need to be cut where it intersects with the other. Then it will restart on the other side of the intersection. In other words, the 2 pieces

will form a cross (%2B) where they meet. Once the panel is soldered, the horizontal and vertical pieces will be joined together from the solder that runs through the lead joint or copper foil seam. There is nothing special you’ll have to do to make that happen. It’s a natural occurrence that happens when you solder.

Restrip can be used in both copper foil and lead work. With foil, the strip sits on edge between the foiled glass pieces. The glass will need to be cut a little bit smaller to accommodate for the thickness of the restrip. Restrip is about as thick as copper foil with the backing in place. If you will be using a lead or zinc border, follow the directions below for lead.

With lead, the restrip sits on edge, in the channel of the lead. Make sure it goes all the way from one outside edge to the other outside edge of the panel, with perhaps 1/8 inch sticking out beyond each edge. Bend the part that sticks out, up or down, so it lays flat against the outside edge of the glass. That will help the restrip adhere to the inside of the border lead once it’s soldered. The principles are the same for using restrip regardless of whether you’re working with copper foil or lead.

How to Tig Weld Using the Lay Wire Method

Pipe Welders and Boilermakers use a Tig welding technique called the “lay wire” technique.

What it means is that the tig welding filler wire is held in the weld puddle all the time instead of being dipped in and out as will traditional tig welding techniques used for sheet metal.

Pipe welding is different from sheet metal welding and pipe welders are a different breed than those who weld sheet metal.

For one thing, Pipe welders often use a technique known as “walking the cup”. This is a technique that works especially well for pipe and not a whole lot else.

Aerospace welders, motorsports welders, sheet metal welders, and most other job shop tig welders do not find much use for walking the cup. But the lay wire technique can be useful for lots of jobs.

Any tig welding job where the thickness is more than 1/8″ inch or.125″…or about 3mm might be able to be done using this method. Especially if pulse parameters are used.

A note of caution: There is always a risk of lack of fusion when you use this technique on fillet welds because leaving the rod in the puddle can chill the puddle and can conceal the leading edge of the puddle making it difficult to ensure proper fusion all the way into the root.

I have heard of recent failures in socket welds where lack of fusion in the root was a contributing factor to the failure and socket welds are very often welded using the lay wire method.

But a socket weld on a power plant that goes through thermal mechanical fatigue is much different that a bracket for your headers on a hot rod project.

So the bottom line is this: use the lay wire method scrupulously. Like when aesthetics are the important thing. When absolute complete fusion is required all the way down in the root of a fillet weld, the dip method rules.
