How To Repair Your Car's Power Windows

As you're driving down the turnpike and approaching the tollbooth, you reach for the switch to lower your window and nothing happens. The switch moves but the window does not budge. Not even a noise from the window motor can be heard which strongly suggests to you that the device is not functioning. You must stop your car and open up the door to pay the attendant before continuing on your trip. Thoughts of an expensive car repair bill are dancing through your head, putting you in a foul mood and tempering the anticipated fun of your getaway weekend. Do not despair: you can repair the power window yourself and save a bundle over expensive dealership charges. Let's take a look at the steps you can take to fix the problem yourself and save a lot of cash in the process.

Assuming That the Before window regulator must be Replaced you shouldnt first rule out the Possibility of dirty electrical contacts. On most cars the main power for all switches goes through the master switch located at the driver's console. Sometimes the switch is dirty causing the window to malfunction. If this is the case, take the necessary steps to clean the contact and your problem should be resolved.

Should you determine that the contacts are clean and your switch is functioning, then it is likely that the motor has burned out and is in need of replacing. You are On installing Whether a Honda window regulator or a Volkswagen window regulator , or a regulator for any : other make the steps Involved in Replacing a window regulator are On Usually quite similar Retail :

1. Remove the door panel for the affected window.

2. Locate and remove the bolts holding the regulator to the door; it is likely you will have to manually lower the window in order to access the bolts.

3. Remove the old regulator, disconnect all wiring, and replace the old regulator with a new one you have purchased from a parts supplier. Shop online to find the best value as you will pay a mint if you order one through a dealership.

4. Tighten the bolts holding the new regulator and reinstall the moisture barrier. Make sure all the wires are put back in the door before closing the door panel.

5. Engage the power window switch and the new regulator should work unimpeded.

Of course, follow your car's repair manual for specific instructions.

I've given to you a general outline to convince you that this is a task that even a novice mechanic can handle – in other words: you can do it! By handling the problem yourself, you'll save plenty of money by avoiding garages who will mark up the replacement part as well as tack on several hours of labor costs to your bill. Shop online to compare prices and to receive the best shipping and handling arrangements available.

Smile Design

If you think that you do not have a beautiful smile, don’t worry just visit your dentist. Dentists can correct all your dental flaws through a host of techniques available to them. Some of the techniques are attaching porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, crowns, bridges, and bonding. Many of these procedures are performed by qualified Buffalo Grove dentist. This article briefly discusses these treatments.

Porcelain veneers

In this technique, a thin layer is removed from the frontal surface of teeth. Then a porcelain layer is attached to the teeth. Not only does this whiten teeth, it also alters the shape and size of teeth if required.

Teeth whitening

There are various teeth whitening kits that are available in medical stores these days. However, these kits are not always as effective as the procedures followed by dentists in clinics. This is because of two reasons. First, the compounds used in the teeth whitening kits that are sold in markets have low concentrations of peroxide. This makes them less effective than the chemicals used by dentists. Dentists also make the covering for the gums that prevent the bleaching agent from damaging the tissues of the mouth separately for each patient. This ensures that none of the bleaching agent spills out.

Crowns

If you have lost teeth, you will need artificial teeth. Porcelain crowns are attached to titanium posts fixed to the jawbone where the teeth are missing. These porcelain crowns are like natural teeth and last quite long. The color of the crown is matched with the color of the patient’s other teeth. This make them look completely natural.

Bridges

When people lose their teeth they may also opt for bridges instead of implants. In this case the artificial tooth or teeth are attached to an adjacent teeth rather than the jaw bone. This is a simpler process of getting permanent dentures.

Bonding

Often the problem is not the teeth themselves but the gaps between the teeth. These gaps can be concealed with material that looks like natural teeth. This also improves the overall shape of the mouth and makes the person’s smile beautiful.

People who wish to visit a dentist for a better smile should find out if the dentist has the qualifications to perform the required procedures or not. Some clinics have their websites with the relevant information. The best thing to do is to talk to people who have been treated by the dentist. Hope you find a good dentist who makes your smile perfect!

The Meaning of Printing in Handwriting Analysis

How we connect our letters gives information on how we connect with other people.

When we don’t connect our letters, as is the nature of printing, we have trouble with our interpersonal relationships because, at the personality level, there is no true desire – or ability – to “bond” or “connect” intimately with another.

Printers are slow, methodical, creative, and intuitive. They plan through all the steps of a project, detailing each step thoroughly. They are open to the influence of the moment which results in their being impulsive and emotionally vulnerable.

Printers observe everything in their environment, as they are alert and even hyper-vigilant. They see the big picture and prefer to work with the conceptual view rather than having to deal with the details. They will work with the details until it is clear in their mind, then they are on to the big picture.

Generally, printers are:

  • 1. egocentric
  • 2. moody
  • 3. selfish
  • 4. cautious
  • 5. fearful
  • 6. unadaptable
  • 7. insecure
  • 8. independent
  • 9. sensitive
  • 10. rebellious

Printing is a facade writing (applies to those that need to print in their careers – such as architects, etc.) so you may not be aware of these qualities in the individual. You are more likely to see the surface charm, or the role of “the wise one.”

Beneath the facade is the pain, fear and anger from early life.

Because he was able to detach from painful feelings early in life and stay on a more mental plane to develop, he is generally intelligent. His intelligence and creativity allow him to devise a most persuasive facade.

Printers are individualists that often have trouble in their relationships. Personality conflicts consistently found in writing with extreme disconnectedness (printing is totally “disconnected” writing) are egocentricity, self-isolation, contact difficulties, ambiguity and sensitiveness resulting from unbalanced drives, inferiority feelings, nervous difficulties. These writers are highly inflexible. A research study supported that printers tend to be more controlled and less flexible than cursive writers. When a printer is in relationship, often he will do something to spoil it and may not understand his actions.

If printing is simplified and direct (no elaborations) it signifies his direct approach to business and directness in communication. His disconnections reveal his emotional isolation and difficulty in close interpersonal relationships, i.e. his disconnections from others.

Because they need control over their emotions, they often end up partnering/marrying someone that ‘does the emotions” for them. An example of this is Princess Diana’s writing, which is that full, rounded, and emotionally immature example.

Printers are often very anal-retentive meaning that developmentally they got stuck at the period in life around approximately 18 months – 3 years old. Difficulty moving through this stage can result in a person that is rigid, obsessed with details, and needs control. Often, too, this person has difficulties with their gastrointestinal and elimination systems as an adult. The holding in of emotions results in constipation – and all the issues that go along with it!

If you have a printer with large capital letters you have a very difficult person to try to relate to, let alone build a quality interpersonal relationship with! If the size of the writing is small it magnifies all of these traits.

In today’s society it seems as it the majority of young adults are printing – possibly not even knowing cursive. This goes hand in hand with the inability of many to not really connect. While there are many forms of communication – texting, computer, etc. – most people are not truly connecting on a meaningful, interpersonal level! Communicating is not the same as “relating.”

How to Foil Glass Nuggets and Other Embellishments to Add Dimension to Stained Glass Projects

Adding dimension to a stained glass project adds interest and depth. To create dimension you can add glass nuggets, jewels, sea shells, recycled glass and other items.

When choosing to add dimensional objects in a project, select or draw a pattern you wish to create. Lay out your pattern starting with the dimensional objects. These objects will need to be foiled and then tack soldered, if used in groupings or combination, then surrounding glass is added.

When choosing foil to wrap dimensional objects, you need to first decide if you will use patina on your finished project. For transparent objects, you will want to choose a copper foil that will blend in with your finished project. If you are going to use black patina on your finished project, use a black backed copper foil. For projects that will remain silver, use a silver backed foil. If a copper patina will be used, then use copper backed foil. For objects that are not transparent, the backing of the copper foil will not be an issue.

The next consideration deals with the width of the copper foil. For very small glass nuggets, jewels or thin recycled glass, use 5/32″. Foil comes in 5/32″ to 1/2″. For most objects, 7/32″ copper foil will work well.

The last factor to consider is the thickness of the copper foil. Copper foil comes in thicknesses of 1.0 mil. to 1.5 mil. When foiling dimensional objects use 1.0 mil. This foil easily bends and conforms to the dimensional object without causing excess bulk due to creasing and bending of foil.

A tip for foiling nuggets and jewels is to wrap the foil around the edge of the nugget or jewel, then press down with your fingers. Rather than trying to burnish, simply place your nuggets and/or jewels in a plastic container and shake. The movement of the nuggets/jewels against each other will do all the burnishing for you.

To foil other dimensional objects, wrap foil along the edge of the object where it will be attached to the stained glass piece. Then using a burnishing tool, press the foil firmly to the object on the top edge and both sides.

Once your object or objects are foiled and burnished, lay them on your pattern. If you are using a group of dimensional objects such as glass nuggets, tack solder them together. Then cut the pattern pieces for the surrounding glass pieces. This will give you a more precise fitting.

Antique Floor Lamps – World’s Best Reading Lamps

First let us define antique floor lamp. Of course a floor lamp normally rests upon the floor as opposed to resting upon a table, the wall or the ceiling. The general definition of an antique means something from a bygone era. This places the term outside the legal arena and into common usage. “era” is general perceived and is defined as a long indefinite time period which also works out perfectly for this general definition. This general definition works perfectly since any identification of an “antique floor lamp” is fairly useless without some time period designation normally in the form of circa 1905 which literally means “about the year 1905”. So I will use the term antique floor lamp on this basis and often substitute it with the term vintage floor lamp. This discussion does not address modern reproductions of antique lamps which is another subject to itself.

More and more people are learning to appreciate the quality and styling of antique floor lamps especially as most of the ones being produced today are molded plastic and literally made to be thrown away. Most all floor lamp makers from the turn of the century made their lamps from heavy metals such as cast iron, brass, steel and cast zinc sometimes combined with marble, onyx, glass and stone. Our lamp shop regularly restores these antique floor lamps for resale as well as for our customers’ own use. From our 30 years of experience it is clear that many of these antique floor lamps will last for hundreds of years. The electrical components, the fabric shades and the painted finishes often need restoration but most were made with such fine quality, that they are a much better value than brand new high end lamps that sell for many hundreds of dollars. You will find some other surprises about these collectible works of art below.

High quality, beauty and function were powerful influences on the makers of antique floor lamps. Many people are aware of their outstanding quality and beauty but completely surprised about the highly developed functional and technical characteristics. There are far too many examples to list here but I will mention a couple of the more important ones.

The brightest lamp that you can purchase today in any store was designed and made circa 1920. It is also the most versatile lamp that you can buy anywhere. Further it will outlast most any modern lamp that you can find at any price. This antique floor lamp is known by a numerous names such as: 6 Way Floor Lamp, Reflector Floor Lamp, and “JUNIOR”. The design begins with a heavy metal base sometimes highly decorated with an upright tubing leading up to a central electrical socket surrounded by 3 arm lights (4 lights total). The central light takes a 3 way bulb (low-medium-high) that is often a MOGUL size which is larger than a standard socket with higher wattage (100-200-300 watts). The three arm lights are controlled by a switch that can turn on separately just 1, 2 or all 3 of the arm lights. Further, many of these JUNIORS had a small light under the base which provided a very subtle night time floor light operated by a foot switch mounted on the side of the base. As if this were not enough, the central top socket is encased in a large metal cup which holds a white waffle patterned glass bowl that reflects light upward to bounce of the ceiling. A fabric or silk shade (also called JUNIOR shade) rests upon the glass reflector bowl to reflect light downward for reading. A single arm light can provide a simple night light or at it brightest setting, it can light up an entire room. There is no brighter lamp or more versatile lamp available anywhere today and it was designed and made nearly 100 years ago!

One of the best reading lamps in the world was also designed circa 1920. It has been highly imitated but it still remains unchallenged. The Bridge Arm Floor Lamp or Bridge Lamp has a typical floor lamp design with metal base and upright standard which can take the form of various types of decorated tubing, twisted iron rods, etc. At the top of the standard is a decorative cast metal arm with a graceful arc or curvature which ends with an electrical socket pointing downward and covered by a fabric or glass shade. This has the effect of offsetting the light by about 14-18″ from the upright standard at the same time lowering it so that it is closer to the reading material or work project. The result is an excellent reading lamp or work lamp which places the light bulb very near the task at hand. Many of these Bridge Arm Floor Lamps have convenient pull chains which hang below the bottom of the lamp shade for ease of operation.

Of course there are many other kinds of antique floor lamps such as torchiere, two light, curved arm, swing arm, etc. Even the oldest and most dilapidated of these well built heirlooms can be brought back to life with some scrubbing, sanding, painting, rewiring and sometimes soldering or welding.

If you want to buy a lamp that you can give to your grand kids, consider buying an antique floor lamp.

What Causes Your Circuit Breaker to Burst

Circuit Breakers are electrical components designed to protect us against the risks of electric shock and our homes against fire and other types of damage that can be caused by electrical faults. Each circuit breaker in your electrical switchboard usually protects one or more related circuits against overload, short circuit and earth leakage.

In order to understand what causes a circuit breaker to burst (or more commonly known as trip), we first need to understand what a circuit is and what the terms overload, short circuit and earth leakage mean.

What Are Circuits?

The electrical installations in our homes are divided into electrically separated segments known as circuits. Each circuit provides electricity to equipment in a very well defined and specific group. All the light fittings and light switches are found on one circuit known as the lighting circuit. Air-conditioners, heating and ventilation equipment are grouped on another circuit known as the HVAC circuit. And last but not least, socket outlets are grouped on a circuit known as the power circuit.

Each circuit is made up of cables, switches, connections and other electrical equipment designed to carry only the maximum electrical current specified by the manufacturer. When exposed to current exceeding this maximum, the electrical component may break down, melt or catch on fire. Circuit breakers were introduced to ensure this does not happen by disconnecting the electricity supply when the electrical current that flows exceeds the maximum capacity that the circuit components can handle.

Overloaded Circuits – The Main Reason a Circuit Breaker Trips

Have a look around your house at all the socket outlets. How many appliances are plugged into each socket outlet? Chances are you’ve got more than the circuit is designed for. Our increasing use of electrical and electronic devices puts more pressure on our electrical installations every day – sometimes to the point where the amount of electricity we use exceeds the amount that the circuit can safely give us without overheating or getting damaged. When this occurs, the circuit breaker in your switchboard will disconnect the circuit from the electrical supply.

Short Circuits – When Things Go Really Wrong

Whether you’re digging in the garden for the great new flower box, or drilling a hole in the wall to put up that lovely family picture, each time you make changes to the house you run the risk of damaging electrical cables concealed behind walls or in the soil. When you drill a hole through a cable or cut it with a spade, direct contact occurs between the individual wires in the cable. This is known as a short circuit. Electrical cables aren’t designed to withstand the current flowing in such a short circuit situation. In cases such as this, the short-circuit protection mechanism in the circuit breaker disconnects the electricity supply to ensure that the cable does not melt or catch fire.

Earth Leakage Currents

Sometimes known as ground fault current or residual current, this is electricity that flows from the electrical installation to the ground or other conductive materials of the house. Electrical systems are designed to pass current between the live conductors of the installation. When appliances like kettles, refrigerators and washing machines become faulty, they can allow current to flow through their metal parts into your body and down to the ground. This is a dangerous situation known as an earth leakage. Certain types of circuit breakers known as Residual Current Devices or Ground Fault Current Interrupters trip when they detect this current flowing to the ground to protect you from electric shock.

In summary, there are only 3 very simple reasons why circuit breakers trip:

1.) A circuit is overloaded, i.e. there are more devices connected to it than the circuit can actually accommodate.

2.) A short-circuit is present. Although less likely than an overload, a cable or other part of the fixed wiring may be damaged. You’ll need a qualified electrician to repair this fault and make your home safe again.

3.) An appliance is causing an earth leakage current to flow. Of all the scenarios, this is by far the most likely cause. Appliances become faulty all the time, and the result is a circuit breaker that keeps tripping.

What should you do if your circuit breaker keeps tripping?

Contact your local electrician to help you find out what the cause is. If you’re from Perth, Western Australia, contact a Perth electrician or one of the Perth electrical contractors.

Opening Credits and the Importance of Opening Credits in the Film Industry

We all know that each particular TV show at the beginning, has a short video for presentation. Well this short videos at the beginning of every episode that we like so much, are called opening credits.

This sequence of video is necessary to public display a TV show to brand a show and to present the performers, in one sentence this little intros, opening credits are extremely important for the rating and the position in the film industry.

In a gesture picture, television program, or video game, the opening theme is shown at the very beginning and list the most of important members of the production.

They are now shown as text superimposed on a blank screen or static pictures, or sometimes on top of action in the show. There may be accompanying by music. Where opening credits are built into a separate sequence of their own, the correct term is title sequence.

Normally a television title sequence, will at a moment badge the TV show with a typographic logo. Around this basic element can be incorporated screen shots, video shots of highlights from earlier episodes, video shots from the last season or shows and major presenters or cast member’s names. Opening Credits musical addition can be either song or instrumental and aided by the visual behavior of the images helps to convey the tone and mood of the television program.

Generally in the case of serials, for the reason that a title sequence is produced at the outset of a TV series, opening credits it will ordinarily include scenes from initial episodes already shot once the sequence was prepared. Quick clips of fundamental characters will often climax in a freeze frame with the intention of superimpose the cast member’s name typical opening theme. Around these essential elements will be other footage depicting the locale in which the TV series is placed and therefore its era. We know that a title sequence might can as well to explain the premise of a series, usual utilizing clips from its previous episode.

Optional a title sequence may be modified through a TV series to renew cast changes or incorporate recent best intriguing shots from preceding episodes, it will attend to stay largely the same for an complete season. Such is the power of a title sequence in expressing the perception of a show; it will occasionally be the fundamental element a producer will target in order to revamp a television program among seasons. Therefore serval shows suffer several changes in the opening credits and theme music during their runs, while in contrast more or less ever-popular shows hold their primary title sequences for decades with just smallest alterations. Retaining a TV series’ original opening credits or title sequence can allow a producer to modify many major elements inside a program itself, devoid of losing the show’s on-screen identity feel and look. More dissimilarity include changing just the theme of the title sequence melody whilst keeping the design visuals or vice versa.

Many major media and film companies use this art of brand and they are doing very good proof and fact is that every person on this planet can remember a opening credits or a part of a particular opening theme video that the person see in the past.

For a batter understanding we can quick study the opening credits of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an example that we can inspect.

These opening theme is very focus we can see that the music is very theme related respective old myth (vampire, werewolf) associated; the theme song is also with a rock influence just perfect for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer opening theme.

Facts About Cornhole

Cornhole is a game that has been played for a very long time now. Though its popularity may have decreased in the recent years, it still remains to be one of the simplest yet very fun games of all time. This game is played by many people in different countries. Many people loved it since it could be played by anyone and can be played in many different places with enough space. The materials used for the game is not that hard to find and can even be made by the players themselves if they want to. It is ideal for different occasions such as birthday parties, team events, and even a regular gathering of friends and family members. Even if you have not heard or tried this game, you can easily learn it. Rules are relatively simple much like other corn toss games and games like horseshoe and washer toss. Children will definitely have a great time playing it as well as adults.

The game is played by 2 opposing players or teams. A special platform is made for this game which is has an angle of inclination of about 45 degrees and has a hole. 2 platforms are placed on opposite sides and a string may or may not connect them together. The distance between the 2 platforms would depend on the players’ preference but they are usually around 15 to 20 feet apart. Each team would have 4 all weather bean bags each which are filled with corn kernels. Players take turn in throwing all their bags. If the bag goes inside the hole, the player who threw it will be given 3 points. If the bag does not go inside the hole but remains at the top of the platform, it is considered as 1 point. If the bag settles at the edge of the platform, the platform is lifted to determine whether the bag stays on top or falls off of it. No point is given if the bag falls off the platform.

In order to win the game, a team must score 21 points. A round is over when each team throws one bag each. In a round, the total score that is given to a team is the difference of the points gained by each team. For example in round 1 team A scored 3 points and team B scored 1 point, 2 points will be awarded to team A for that particular round. This game is usually played in a lawn but it could also be played in other venues which have sufficient space. It is great for team building activities and parties as well. It would also be ideal if you want to pass time with your friends.

Cornhole is a type of game that will be loved by future generations. Though it is old and simple, it is very fun to play. It is a great alternative to video games and it is also a way to have quality time with people who are special to you.

The Moon Phases and the Symbological / Spiritual Analogy of the Growth of the Seed

We have all looked up at the moon at some point of our lives and been in a state of awe at its powerful, majestical presence and magnitude. The moon illuminates the sky and appears as a beacon of light and mystery. It is always there, constant and intriguing in its changing forms. We know that not only does the moon affect the tides on earth, but also female menstruation. It has also been reported that the moon can affect human mental state, behaviour, and emotions. Natal, psychiatric, and general hospital wards are often busier on a full moon.

Scientific research has curiously found that as all matter has frequencies, including the moon, sun, planets etc, and these frequencies have the ability to affect humans and animals, even if it is on a subtle level. The frequencies of the moon can affect and influence the thoughts and impressions in our sub-conscious mind and cause things to surface to the conscious mind and thus bring them to our awareness. When there is a full moon, the frequencies are much more active, and so there is a heightened activity and intensity of the mind as well as behavioural tendencies.

Moon Phases

Every moon phase has its own special energy and magic. The constantly changing cycle of the moon can be analogised with the process of a seed sprouting into a full flower in bloom. See the chart below to understand the phases of the moon and its spiritual and symbological significance. By understanding the energy of each phase, you can begin to connect and work with the cycles and have a better understanding of how they affect you.

ANALOGISING THE MOON PHASES WITH THE GROWTH OF THE SEED AND ITS SPIRITUAL / SYMBOLOGICAL MEANINGS

New Moon

At this part of the moon’s cycle, it has no illumination and so appears dark and not visible (except during a solar eclipse). As it is dark, it denotes the beginning, with a primal instinct for birthing. The seed, as a symbol, is beneath the ground. So this is the germination stage, where you can initiate the emergence of something new by setting your intentions for what you wish to grow. A good time for starting anything new such as a project, idea, business venture etc.

Waxing Crescent

The moon is now partly illuminated by less than one-half, and increasing. The seed is now sprouting. Things are moving forward and there is the hope of more to come.

First Quarter

The moon is one-half exposed, and increasing in illumination. The seed is now presenting a root and plant structure on its way to growing and moving forward. This symbolises a period of decision, action and commitment.

Waxing Gibbous

More than one-half of the waxing of the moon is showing and increasing in illumination, therefore it represents the sense of gaining and attaining. So this can be applied to what you wish to gain and develop, such as friends, wealth, skills etc. Now the buds are preparing to bloom. This is the developmental stage where ideas and plans can be cultivated and fine-tuned before the next stage of manifestation.

Full Moon

The moon is full and round in all its glory. It appears to be completely illuminated by direct sunlight (this lasts for three days before and after the full moon date). As the moon is fully luminated, it represents fertility, abundance, transformation and completion. The seed is in full bloom. It is a potent and powerful time for healing, guidance and magic, as well as any positive intentions, including improving your psychic abilities. The moon will act in your favour and you will achieve good results. As the sun and moon are directly opposite each other, it causes tension or polarity. There are associations with the Goddess mother aspect, so you can honour and connect with Goddesses such as Isis, Cerridwen etc.

Waning Gibbous

The moon is more than one-half showing, but not fully illuminated, and decreasing. As the moon appears to be getting smaller, this is a good time to focus on ridding something such as bad habits, stresses or negative thinking.

Last Quarter

One-half is showing and it is decreasing in illumination. This is like a half-way point, a kind of contemplative time of introspect & (re)evaluation. The seed has now planted fully and all harvests have been reaped. There is a sense of shedding of the old before the new can come into place.

Waning Crescent

The moon is partly illuminated with less than one-half showing, and it is decreasing in illumination. The old cycle ends and the new one is near. This is the final releasing & purging stage, completing anything remaining, and banishing anything not required, before the birth of the new seed.

WORKING WITH THE MOON CYCLES

Take time to observe the moon and pay attention to it’s changing cycles. Think about taking an inventory of how the moon may be affecting your life. Are you in sync with its natural rhythms and symbological cues, or fighting them? Learn to honour and work with the moon’s energies.

The Importance of Selecting Proper Bathroom Lighting

Bathroom lighting is critical. This is usually the first room we enter in the morning, setting the mood for the remainder of the day. It’s also the room we enter when we are half asleep in the middle of the night.

Washing, putting on make-up, shaving, grooming, and taking medications are but a few of the daily routines in the bathroom. There is no other room in the home where optimizing both daylighting (natural outdoor light) and lighting (light bulbs) is more critical.

Daylighting is important for our overall health and emotions as it sets our circadian rhythms (how natural light affects and resets our biological clock and consciousness). Lighting is critical for our safety (80% of all falls for older adults occur in the bathroom) and personal grooming.

Daylighting

Nothing comes close to beating the warmth, beauty, and emotional value of windows and skylights. These brighten your mood helping you feel more refreshed and energized. They make a smaller bathroom look much bigger. They also have the added value of fresh air and help reduce moisture levels (high levels of moisture can create harmful levels of mold and bacteria and destroy your walls and ceilings).

Windows provide free, energy-efficient, cost-effective lighting and ventilation. They are actually good for you. It has been shown in several prominent studies that daily exposure to natural light can enhance mental and physical well-being, boost concentration and energy levels, and offer a variety of other unexpected perks.

Multiple windows allow for balancing the natural light, cross ventilation, and “opening” the bathroom to the outside. Larger windows can have bottom-up / top-down shades for privacy. Windows can also open in various combinations. Skylights, especially the tube type, offer tremendous opportunities for natural light in small spaces where a traditional window is not practical. A 10″ tube type skylight lets in at least 5-10 times more light than a typical 2×3 sliding bathroom window.

Lighting

Recess lights, especially LED, are terrific for adding task lighting in the general space, including the water closet. For most bathrooms, LED recess lighting on a dimmer is best. It’s always better to “over light” and use dimmers to adjust. Never use fluorescent lights – the bathroom is not a warehouse.

A light over the tub and shower is ideal for providing both mood and grooming lighting. Shaving legs is so much easier when you have overhead lighting.

For vanity areas, wall sconces mounted either overhead or on the sides of the mirror are best. This removes shadowing on the face which makes applying makeup much easier and gives definition when applying lines. Combining both wall sconces and recess lights within the vanity area solves both the shadow and task concerns. Putting on makeup and doing your hair is much easier when combining the two.

Always use multiple switches and dimmers for lighting. This permits a vast array of possibilities for everyone who uses the bathroom. Everyone has different needs and the value of doing this cannot be over stressed.

An LED receptacle type photocell nightlight is perfect in the water closet. It’s ideal when using the facility at night without having to turn on the bedroom lights – blinding you and waking your partner.

For LED lighting, the color temperature and lumens are very important. Temperature does not refer to degrees. Rather, it refers to the color – reddish to blue sky. Lumens refer to the amount of visible light or brightness. Compared to incandescent bulbs, LED lighting uses 70-90% less energy, saves an enormous amount of money over their life span, last up to 25 times longer (23 years or more), and helps to protect the environment.

Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest reef in the world and only Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is larger. The reef barrier just off the coast of the Central American country of Belize is a wonderful and beautiful site to see.

One of the most popular activities to do while at Belize’s Barrier Reef for locals and tourist alike is: spear fishing! If you never catch anything while spear fishing it is still fun and exciting and the local people always say, “You can’t get fish any fresher.”

One activity you should not expect to do while in Belize is surfing. The reef barrier just off the Belizean cost, naturally breaks down waves before they reach the shore.

The Belize Barrier Reef alone brings over one-hundred-million US Dollars to the country every single year. Belize has tens of thousands of tourist visit each year just to experience this magnificent reef; one of Belize’s prized treasures.

Unfortunately two major natural disasters threatened to completely destroy the Belize Barrier Reef. In November of 1998 Hurricane Mitch directly hit the Barrier Reef ripping up hundreds of years worth of coral growth. Since corals are animals and not plants they can not take root else where. Just after Hurricane Mitch, El Nino brought warmer then usual waters to the reef and literally cooked it to death. All the dead reef on the bottom of the ocean floor is known to the local Belizean people as, ‘The Standing Dead.’ In that fish still like the coral reef whether it is dead or alive, there has been no impact to the livelihood of local people, since, for many, the reef is their main source of food.

Over 10 years after Hurricane Mitch, Belize as a country, is recovering. Though the Belize Barrier Reef is not fully restored to its’ former glory, it is well on its’ way and is still a must see world attraction! ~Anthony Benjamin~

Advantages Of Using Battery Powered Christmas Lights

Battery powered Christmas lights have become the most popular choice for holiday decorating in the last few years, and for good reason. Consumers see the many benefits to using them. The most common ones used today are LEDs. These come in two styles, traditional electrical Christmas lights (incandescent bulbs) and battery powered Christmas lights. Battery powered Christmas lights give a bright white light, and they produce a better color than standard bulbs. They use much less energy, and last much longer than standard lights. They use 90-98% less electricity than incandescents, and they will last 16 times longer.

The most common battery powered Christmas lights are the string of lights, which can be all white or multi colored. However, they are available in many other shapes and styles and can be used for indoor decorating or outdoors. These LEDs run on various types of batteries, depending on their size and how many lights there are on the string. Most of these run on AA, 3A, C or D batteries.

One tip is to consider using rechargeable batteries to save even more money. These LEDs come in many different forms, shapes, sizes and colors. Make sure when buying them that you are aware of what type of use they are designed for.

The outdoor versions are more durable and weather proof. You do not want to use indoor lights outside. The strings vary in length. However, another advantage to the battery powered Christmas lights is the fact that you can combine many more strings together to create whatever length is necessary. Traditional strings are limited to usually just three strands. Anything more becomes a fire risk. Most battery powered Christmas lights strings are used for decorating the Christmas tree, wreaths and other indoor uses.

Outdoor string battery LEDs can be used to decorate your homes exterior, landscaping and the yard, and because you can combine several strings you should have no problem covering everything you want. Best of all, since battery LEDs do not require any cords, you don’t have to run miles of extension cords to an outlet. No cords to trip over, become disconnected, and no major drain on the electricity.

Battery powered Christmas lights are easier to use since they don’t require an outlet. You can set them up anywhere you please, and there is no need to hide power cords out of sight. No need to worry about someone tripping over an extension cord running along the floor. No unsightly tangles of power cords.

They are ideal for hanging wreaths. Again, you will have no cords running out of the wreath to an outlet. The most popular use of battery LEDs is the Christmas tree. They make it easy to set up the tree because you do not have to position your tree so that it is close to an outlet. These LEDs also do not burn hot, and do not plug into the wall, eliminating a fire and safety hazard.

You can purchase battery powered Christmas lights that are fireproof. These will not get hot and pose a threat to catching your tree on fire. Battery lights last much longer than standard incandescents, are more durable, safer, and cost much less to use. This is why more and more consumers are choosing to use these lights for holiday decorating.

Eco-Friendly Wallpaper

More wallpaper is being woven from natural materials as the industry adapts to customer demands for sustainability. Basement Construction in Clay Soils

If you plan basement construction in an area that has clay in the soil, you need to take precautions to avoid structural damage to your home. So here are a couple tips to consider before you start basement construction in clay soils.

Before you start basement construction you need to know what type of soil you are building on. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has soil information on most of the United States. Soil testing can also be done so you will know what you are working with. Another important step is to make sure the ground is compacted. Failing to compact the ground properly can also lead to trouble in the future.

Expansive clay soils, such as bentonite and montmorillonite, can cause structural damage to basements and home foundations when proper precautions aren’t taken during construction. When deciding to build a basement in an area that has clay soil you need keep in mind the nature of the soil that you plan to build on. Clay holds moisture and as the seasons change the amount of moisture in the soil also changes.

If you build on clay when it is holding large amounts of moisture, you can have your basement sink as the moisture content of the soil decreases. If you build while the moisture content is low, your basement may be pushed up when the moisture content increases. This can end up causing structural cracks. There are several ways to deal with the seasonal changes in the moisture content in clay when you are constructing a basement.

Before putting in the basement, you need to be building on stable ground. With clay in particular, it is important to make sure you have the ground compacted properly so you do not end up with the ground shifting under the weight of your home. It is possible to treat the soil with a lime mixture to increase stability and control swelling. This is done by removing a layer of the soil and adding several trenches under the area you want to construct your basement or foundation. Once you have the trenches in place you fill them with a lime mixture. This treatment adds about a month on the time you are going to need for construction.

Basements that are built in clay soil need to be able to breathe or move up and down slightly with the ground water in the soil. Concrete floors are not attached to the concrete foundation so that this movement doesn’t cause structural damage. To allow for this movement, all internal walls in the basement need to be “floating walls” or raised walls. Floating walls are suspended from the first floor and have a gap between the wall and the concrete floor slab. When you build in some areas you are actually required to use floating walls in basement construction. When you obtain your building permit you need to find out of this is a requirement for your area.

When basement construction includes plumbing, a reverse of this floating wall process is required. The floating walls are attached to the floor to create a solid base and the space is at the top of the wall in these cases. Expansion joints and flex lines are used for basement plumbing when working in clay soil to allow for the natural movement with ground moisture changes. Space must be left for pipes to reduce the risk of pipe breakage.
